Saturday afternoon at 3PM Eastern Time ESPN2 continues its coverage of the Busch Series.
First up live from Memphis Motorsports Park is a thirty minute version of NASCAR Countdown. Then, at 3:30PM ESPN2 begins the race telecast.
TV veteran Marty Reid will anchor the ESPN2 coverage, with both Randy LaJoie and Rusty Wallace alongside for analysis. On pit road will be Allen Bestwick, Shannon Spake, and Vince Welch. There is no current info on who will host the Countdown show.

Well since this is new to ESPN, I don't see how else you can get away from the problems except learning. We have not seen any rookie technical mistakes, just some problems that i think will pass if ESPN tries to learn the sport and takes an active effort at improving their on air talent.

I hate to send this board down the wrong path because this is supposed to be about TV, but that makes it seem like anyone who likes anything about the ESPN telecast will get shot down and killed for their opinion.

If ESPN Classic doesn't pick up Happy Hour coverage it looks like the best case scenario is a 12:30 AM broadcast on ESPN2 after college football and drag racing.

Also, although I believe there has been too much Carl (especially being a Kenseth fan), he is on the verge of clinching the championship. I guess it makes sense to the casual viewer...but the avid fan already gets it.

The network starts the day with X number of breaks to get in and can fit them in as they please. So... we've had a record number of yellows and have already passed the scheduled off-air time... and they still haven't used up all their commercial breaks?

I did not think that was how it works. It costs more to have a commercial during a race. so if they paid the happy hour price, the sponsors are not going to get in during the race for a discount.
Well we got like 90 minutes of commercial free coverage of the Kansas Cup race when it finished on ESPN2.
They didn't insert the commercials that were supposed to air during their originally scheduled programming so I don't know about the Happy Hour theory.

that was becase the race moved. the commercials were comming out of ABC HQ. since it moved to espn2, they did not have any comercials lined up so you got that free 90 minutes.
Maybe the last 10 laps will be commercial free!
At this rate, I'll take 10 caution free laps over 10 commercial free laps.

This is not a "broadcast.' It's cable/satellite.
I'm not sure about sporting events, but for regular shows and movies, there is a maximum number of commercial minutes they can show during a broadcast. That broadcast can be (for example) a 30 minute sitcom or a 3 hour movie. For a 3 hour movie, they can load all the commercials to the front or back.
TBS is famous for this. They will start a movie and not have any commercials for 30 - 45 minutes and load up the end of the movie with most of the commercials.

Sooo...having looked at the various ESPN schedules, I'm guessing that, assuming the race ends by 4p (7p EDT), Happy Hour could run from 4p-5p PDT on ESPN 3 (Classic). That is the only 60 minute window on the only ESPN outlet NOT airing College Football all day. If not then, I don't see a place/time to put it other than overnight (which would be fine by me).
Hey!...If I click my heels 3 times and say "there's no place like SPEED", do you think Happy Hour might end up on...uh, nevermind...

Yeah, because lots of fans on the east coast are doing to stay up and watch it at 12;30am.
They have done a good job today, but they have done well on other Busch races and still didn't learn anything for the Cup race the next day.
And I wouldn't count on that 12:30 AM start time being set in stone either. The Foorball game will likely run long and everything after it will be delayed as well.
I'll bet ESPN won't be so quick on airing the radios for the rest of the day...I mean...night.

um... it was recorded....ESPN moved the broadcast. I wouldn't expect them to be practicing at 12:30 AM.

I still don't understand why they couldn't have aired Happy Hour live on ESPN Classic this morning though. This isn't 1996, we shouldn't be dealing with tape-delays of any NASCAR programming in 2007.
This coverage IS better than the usual Cup coverage ESPN does.
But tomorrow's race will still have all the problems they always have, including (but not limited to) the 2,713 playing of the Aerosmith video.

On a serious note, re-scheduling Happy Hour is a good sign. It shows that the folks back in Bristol (Connecticut) understand that Happy Hour means more to the serious fan than just something to fill an hour of airtime while we happen to be at the track. Not to mention, making sure it can air in HD instead of "Classic". I understand it's late for the East Coast folks, but with all of their College Football commitments, it appears to have been just about that or nothing.

Boy this will look bad for NASCAR if the new "exclusive home of the Busch Series" bails out immediately after the checkered flag and completely skips not only the normal post-race interviews but also the championship ceremony that very well could happen after this race.

well you saw what happened....the 49 clearly ran down the 66 to cause the crash.
I've been pleasantly surprised today. I'll take Marty any day over Dr. Punch! Of course, Bestwick is my fav, but if we can't have him, I'm happy to take Marty as a 2nd choice.

In reality, they may switch football to ESPN because the college football scoreboard show -not a game- is scheduled to be on. Football begins on ESPN at 7:45.

There is no excuses for what just happened. and I was about to congratulate ESPN for a good broadcast. I must say though, none of this is Marty or Rusty's fault. Someone at ESPN HQ made a stupid decision. I think it is time to issue some pick slips.
In fairness, they dumped out of the Double OT football game just as quickly to get to today's Busch race. It's really a no-win situation when they're up against another live event. If it was like TNT's bailing early to get to a movie, I would be irate. But in this situation, one event or the other is going to get the short end...and it's almost always the event that's just ended.
Regarding the announcing, this is probably the 3rd best "team" I've heard this year behind FOX and SPEED's regular announcers. Marty & Randy even made Rusty sound better...and that's not an easy task! Let's hope Dr. Jerry and Andy were taking notes.
26 cautions is a record for a Busch race at Memphis as last year set the record with 16 cautions ...
In regards to Kyle Petty on "Tradin' Paint" and Jimmy Spencer on "Nascar RaceDay" ... Those guys are paid to say controversial things to get the fans fired up ... It's a ratings ploy ...

Also, I am not a big Rusty fan, but blood is blood, and I think he does deserve some slack IF he is checking on his son when Steve has been involved in a wreck.
The obscene coverage is not ultimately an ESPN issue. It is a NASCAR problem.
Railing against each individual program has become a major waste of time.

In defense of ESPN (yes I wrote those words) they did plan extra time by scheduling the Cup practice after this race. They probably had the expectation the Busch race would go no more than 15 or 20 minutes into Cup race. This wreckfest went way beyond that, to the point it was silly.
Kansas the 9th ranked college football team in the country is playing. Just like we want to see our prerace ceremonies, which I get annoyed about missing, these fans want to see their pregame. And we got our race immediately after the other football game was over, so they were being fair there. Some of those fans probably aren't happy with no postgame.
This was a Busch race with no important ramifications because Carl Edwards did not win the championship. Some might argue all the Busch races have lost their meaning because eventually he will win the championship anyway. While I'm thrilled for Reutimann, fact remains that he has a Cup ride to go back to whether he won or not. It's not like some Busch-only guy won.
Though I wish things were different, I can't blame ESPN for the scheduling priorities. Bottom line, the ratings of this football game will likely at least triple the ratings of the Busch race, and it's important in terms of standings and postseason. That's really all that matters to them in terms of scheduling and audience priorities.
Marty and Randy did a great job today! Randy should def be on the Busch announce team next year. It is amazing how Marty does all the things that Jerry can't do: reset the field, keep up with pit strategy, kep the broadcast moving, keep Rusty on track, make the show fun. Way to go Marty!!
It's ashame that ESPN execs ruined it by running off the air so fast. I understand the race ran right up to off-air time, but ESPN has TWO other networks, including a NEWS network. There's no reason, vene for 5 or 10 min that we couldn't have gotten a winner's interview and replay of the last lap crash. I have a feeling that come Homestead, if that Cup race runs late, we will not see the champion crowned. And frankly, I'd like to see that happen so NASCAR has to react to ESPN.
I don't know, with folks like Steve Burns (love his work) ducks in here to read the fan posts.... I think some are paying attention to what we say in here...

I agree. They could see this coming just as easily as the game that sent the countdown show to Classic...especially given the Championship possibility. Obviously, there are many more football fans than racing fans at ESPN. Hopefully, with the Producing changes I mentioned earlier, NASCAR will get a stronger voice when it comes to these sort of decisions.
Now hold on...again, why cant ESPN send post-race elsewhere? Also the fans of college football can see interviews and analysis tonight on ESPN. we cant do that with NASCAR.
For those who were surprised that ESPN didn't preempt it's horse racing earlier...it was the Breeder's Cup, the year end championship and a very very big deal.
Not to mention the gambling; The city of Las Vegas would have imploded if the race broadcast was not available.
Even if you don't follow other sports closely, it's a good idea to get familar with the "biggies" in their events so there won't be any surprise when ESPN doesn't move a regular NASCAR race for it. I don't follow a lot closely, but I know the basics of the major events. Honestly, it kind of makes us look ignorant when we're so wrapped up in NASCAR that we would demand the Breeder's Cup be moved for a regular season Busch race.

The overall coverage and the call of the race was not bad...it was just the end that got me mad.

well, I am thrilled that Nascar.com is showing video of the interview, but since I'm stuck in the boonies, I'm on dial-up. It does me absolutely NO good & I can't be the only one.
ESPN didn't cause any of those cautions to cause the race to run way over.
There is a huge ratings dropoff right after the checkered flag. Thats why, even under the best of circumstances, there isn't that much time given for post race interviews. It would be more trouble than its worth to move it to classic for the 5-10 minutes worth of interviews.

I'd be curious to see if the following thought process of ESPN producer Rich Feinberg changes, as posted in an article a few weeks ago, seems like they don't want the race to end early enough to have a decent postrace.
"Feinberg is already thinking about how the race will end, both on the track and on the air. If the race ends early, that leaves more time for the top finishers to be interviewed. But viewership typically peaks as the race ends, then falls off dramatically. The more time there is after the checkered flag, the more that drop in viewership can pull down the overall average rating.
“Then the headline in the paper is about the rating being down,” Feinberg says. “You try to do what’s best for the fans, but there is a balance you have to strike.”

I want to clarify I know the booth announcing was much improved (as far as chemistry, not sure about the details since I taped an hour of the race but never bothered to watch it with all the crashes) but there were a lot of comment here today.

There is a huge ratings dropoff right after the checkered flag. Thats why, even under the best of circumstances, there isn't that much time given for post race interviews. It would be more trouble than its worth to move it to classic for the 5-10 minutes worth of interviews.

This time I am only asking for ONE DAMN INTERVIEW. the winner's interview in victor lane. ESPN could have interrupted college football scoreboard for a quick victory lane interview.
Erik, it wasn't too much trouble for NBC to move their post-race coverage to CNBC last year. And if ratings drop so much after the event is over, I hope ABC/ESPN doesn't interview anyone after the NBA championship games, or the Indy 500, or college football or Monday Night football....
Once again ESPN treats NASCAR like professional Wrestling.

For those who were surprised that ESPN didn't preempt it's horse racing earlier...it was the Breeder's Cup, the year end championship and a very very big deal.
Agreed. There was about $20 million+ in prize money on the line. I was appalled to come into this thread and read (upthread) the calls of "TAKE OFF THE HORSE RACE!" Isn't that what we complain about when fans of b-ball and football do that to us? Plus you can't interrupt the Breeder's cup between races. That's the time for analysis and such. People would storm ESPN if they said "Yeah...we're going to switch over to NASCAR right now and will be back in 40 minutes, OK?" Ridiculous.
I appreciated Marty Reid resetting the field at restarts.

NASCAR.com has already put up another copy of VL without Rusty's comments, so they may delete that version.
I still do not understand why post-race interviews could not be recorded and replayed on ESPNNEWS sometime shortly after the end of the race. From my experience ESPNNEWS does not have that much original content that it could not squeeze in 5 or so minutes of post-race interviews. A day or 2 later on NASCAR Now is not the same as the same day as the race.

Then they're saying something else about Steven starting with "He didn't...", but they stop and go to David getting out of his car in VL. The new version posted above this one is 30 seconds shorter and cuts all of that off.
On second listening, it may be Randy who said "I don't believe what they did to Steven.", with Rusty's reply of "Nah that was baloney, man."

A 1 lap warning on a short track does no good when there still are a couple of minutes of commercials to get through.
NASCAR needs to do things how the rest of the sports world works with TV. The network says they'll be back from commercial in 30 seconds. At that point, NASCAR will now when they can throw the green.
I don't understand why NASCAR would expect special treatment.

I don't think NASCAR wants special treatment. I think it is OWED the right to not have restarts missed by ESPN. Not this many were missed by Fox,NBC,and TNT combined as season 1 on ESPN. --janel

Those links didn't work. It might be too long and may have needed to be pasted manually here. The one in the comment at 7:45 did work and I watched it. Rusty was complaining about NASCAR decision with Steven just like the comment at 8:29 said. Likely he and Randy didn't realize the mikes were on.

Its randy and crusty talking about not believing that NASCAR parked Steve..
"HE DIDN'T EVEN HIT the guy".... (I think thats Randy.. Its hard to tell the two apart, they are talking over each other)
No winning driver interview in the first ESPN news clip I saw... (just now as I was typing I saw the 2nd ESPN NEW's clip from the Busch race, no winner interview, WEAK)

About halfway down the page on the right side is the Video Control Room section. The thrid item in that list is the video we are talking about. It is 1:31 in length and is titled "Victory Lane: Reutimann wins". The first itme in the list is also titled the same, but is only 1:01 in length.
They seemed to have a problem with not knowing when they were live or 'on mic' a couple different times during the coverage today. I heard them when they came back from commercial in the pre-race on ESPNC, I heard marty say "are we still on classic?". Its clear Crusty and Randy didn't know they were live either at the end... whooopsy....

but during the interview....they were not live they just ended the broadcast. that is the fault of NASCAR.com for recording when ESPN already signed off.
Enjoyed Marty and Randy. Rusty was much better, he actually asked and respected Randy's opinion! Considering the length of the race, I think they did a great job.
I am also a college football fan, I understand the need for ESPN to cut out early. The last scene was David doing burn-outs, I think it would have taken quite awhile to wait for him to get to the winner's circle. This was an unusual circumstance.
All and all, I would grade the broadcast as a B+.
I don't work at ESPN. I understand the importance of other sports, including the Breeder's Cup. Being from a that hosts the Kentucky Derby, I know how t.v. can take the entire day to broadcast two minutes of action. The Breeder's Cup is many races during the day, such as the Classic. It is just a big day in sports, period. It sometimes happens that way.
I have been critical of ESPN several times in these comments. I am in total agreement with the fans who lament missing qualifying etc.
With the exception of the poor transition to football, I actually think the broadcast was OK. The booth folks got stuck with NASCAR's version of a demolition derby, but they managed to keep the conversation flowing.
Marty Reid did a better job of keeping things on track than the drivers today. I do think he could have ended the program with more grace. I understand the need to switch quickly, but that was way too abrupt.
Good race coverage. Poor pre and post race coverage.
But word on the street is that ESPN realizes they are struggling and a supposedly already getting ready to make some personnel changes both in front and behind the camera for next season.
Can't fault ESPN for listening to the fans.
ESPN could've planned better based on the past two races at Memphis ... 2006 had 16 cautions ... 2005 had 15 cautions ... Though, there was no way to that 2007 would have 25-26 cautions, a red flag, a G/W/C (that sorta ended under yellow - if Kevin's arm could pick up the yellow flag) ...
The real race winner was the Corvette Pace Car ... The real race loser was Kevin Moss's right arm (the official starter/flagman) ...

I thought that the broadcast today was surprisingly decent. Particularly considering the mess that was the race. How do you deal with a situation where the longest green flag run was 19 laps.
The one thing which I thought was troublesome was when Rusty was making excuses for his son, after he was parked for going after the car which had wrecked him under the yellow flag.
I also have heard more than enough about the Edwards run in with Kenseth. I imagine we will see the video a number of times again tomorrow, but isn’t enough enough? Everyone has had plenty of chances to decide whether Edwards’ apology is real, weigh the comments made by Biffle on INC and the article in USA Today, etc etc, if they are interested enough to find out.
Let’s go back to the theory that Earnhardt in/Busch out, Busch in/Yeley out, and Yeley in/Raines out proves that open wheelers are ruining our sport that I read on nascar.com the other day.
word on the street they are going to make changes in front of and behind the scenes?? Ain't we been screaming, whining, kvetching about this for months?

sportscenter just aired highlights of the race but had no mention of the championship race and no interview with the winner or anyone else. maybe they will insert the winner's interview in the 4 AM repeat of the race.

WOW!!! I cant believe ESPN is doing this....after the world series game ends, they will abruptly cut from happy hour to go to a 30 minute edition of baseball tonight. Then after that, happy hour will resume.

the baseball game ended and just as I thought, Mike Massaro was interrupted in mid-sentence. ESPN2 went to black for a second and baseball tonight started. However I must say, ESPN said this was going to happen for about 5 minutes on the ticker. Happy hour will resume at 1:30 AM.
