In-Progress At Las Vegas: Sprint Cup Race On Fox

The NASCAR on Fox gang continues their coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from Las Vegas, NV on Sunday at 3:30PM.

Chris Myers, Jeff Hammond and Darrell Waltrip kick-off the coverage from the Hollywood Hotel. The green flag is not scheduled until almost 4:30PM, so there should be a significant amount of pre-race activity.

Mike Joy anchors the Fox coverage, with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds alongside in the announce booth. On pit road Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes, Dick Berggren and Krista Voda will be the reporters. This is a very solid broadcast crew.

Look for Fox to detail the on-going situation with the high winds, and the resulting issues with the COT and problems with grip. During the pit stops, look for Fox to decide to use a video effect that shows four cars or three. With the four car effect, there is no opportunity to see the pit road and the race off.

ESPN worked hard to eliminate their over-use of the bumper cams, and this will be the challenge for Fox on this big track. It is easy to use technology for the sake of using it. It is much harder to stay within the on-going story of the race and keep focused on relaying that "reality" to the fans.

One of the hottest topics on the Internet is the introduction of the Gopher Cam. These multiple track-level cameras are interesting to use on the first couple of laps after a caution, or when the field is bunched-up and running in one big pack.

Cutting the Gopher Cam into the action as the cars are involved in racing has proven to be a tough challenge. The quick perspective change does not really allow for TV viewers to see anything but one car zooming by. While the camera is stationary like a typical "speed shot," the low angle does not offer the same ability to "see the field." As for the Gopher Cam naming contest, you can offer your own comment.

Fox has been conflicted at the finish of the past Cup races. Simply seeing the winner cross the start-finish line and then zooming the same camera into the flagman is ridiculous. Fans of all the drivers want to see their car racing to the line. The fundamental truth is that the race is not over when the winner crosses the line.

It should be an interesting telecast without the hype of Daytona or the weather issues of California. We would like your comments on the NASCAR on Fox presentation of the Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas.

To add your opinion, simply click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are on the right side of the main page. Thank you once again for stopping by The Daly Planet. Enjoy the race.

good directing for those pit stops. nice catch with the tire.

I realize that the last few cautions have been 'minor', but FOX has managed to miss at least three of them.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Good point. That 4-way pit split is still tough for me to deal with. I really liked the triple and the open strip for the pit road camera.

I think TNT calls their pre-race show Countdown to Green. Maybe it was NBC. Regardless, the name makes it crystal clear it is the pre-race show.

I sure hope Cuba Gooding Jr. got a LOT of money for those undie ads.

Did you see Kasey Kahne's new commercial where he's dancing (in the dreams of the Allstate girls, who collected enough money to sponsor his car)? Too bad they are showing the 30 second commercial and not the 60 second commercial which is really great (it's on nascar.com). Maybe the 60 second version will air before the race is over.

He should really be sponsored primarily by Allstate - they do a much better job with his commercials then that stupid one that Bud just produced for him. Bud needs to step it up and soon. To me Kasey is much more connected to Allstate than Bud.

"If there is debris....lets see it."

NASCAR does not always tell FOX where the debris is.

For Ken Schrader fans, just saw a promo on SPEED REPORT with Despain...Ricky Carmichael was supposed to drive for DEI but will drive for SCHRADER instead...Schrader will be on live from SOMEWHERE after the race, to discuss this..so said DD.

I'd still like to see Travis Kvapil and that unsponsored #28 car to get some TV time. He's just cracked the top 15 after getting his lap back earlier.

---

Agreed, and I would like to see more coverage of the uncomfortable issue sponsorship woes. Yates has an unsponsored #28 and Childress is running the juggernaut #21 on Saturdays in an all black scheme.

Did we see the new KK commercial in this race yet?

Anonymous said...

WOW... a NASCAR media group camera man was in the way of a pit stop. JD, what do you think of this? It was not a FOX guy he was from NMG. What could happen to the camera man?

Erik said...

Wow, that is amazing. Need to take the penalty out on the Gopher cam.

Sophia said...

I also liked the triple PIT CAM MUCH better so we can keep perspective on PIT ROAD!

March 2, 2008 7:17 PM

Yes, they've played the 30 second version twice. Today was its debut. At least I think it was 30 it seemed much quicker than that because I was looking for all the rest of it. It doesn't play well chopped up IMO.

Anonymous said...

Hey why doesn't SUNOCO sponsor the 28 then they could legitametly talk about SUNOCO in the booth. Plus that would be fun for Harvick, just a thought

Daly Planet Editor said...

No idea what that guy was shooting, but they always stand clear of the teams. Pit stops are no big deal, they happen all race long. I will track down the story from the NMG guys when they get back to Charlotte. Thank goodness NASCAR made the right decision.

Anonymous said...

JD - is the Dish network presenting sponsorship of NASCAR on Fox just coincidental to News Corp's divestiture of DirecTV?

stricklinfan82 said...

Bravo on mentioning Kvapil and Ragan. Other than missing a couple Lucky Dogs I don't know what else they could have done to make this broadcast any better. Great job so far..... but the question remains, will they close the deal and show more than a handful of cars finish, or will the production truck drop the ball and overshadow an otherwise fantastic 4+ hours of work?

PammH said...

yes, JD-the commercial w/KK was on early in the race.

Joseph D'Antoni said...

re: Vickers--I thought Fox operated the scanners on a delay now, to avoid such drama.

stricklinfan82 said...

This might be a good time for Fox to bring up the significance of the battle to be in the top 35 in owner's points after race 5. Even though DJ is retiring as a driver that #44 car will run the whole schedule and will almost certainly be in the thick of the battle for 35th. Even if it doesn't make it to today's broadcast it should be discussed at Atlanta and should certainly be a major focal point of their coverage at Bristol.

At this rate, we're quickly approaching the end of the allotted broadcast time of 7 PM CT. New primetime shows are scheduled after that. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Since When? They have never done this before except to mention on occasion that Sunoco provides the race fuel, and they only run Goodyear who else are they going to talk about when they talk tiers? This interjection of the word sunoco infront of fuel is a clear plant and is more annoying then anything that comes out of Mikey's mouth just because it is so blatent

You've gotta give FOX credit, Jr's been up front all race and then having been drooling over that fact.

I am fairly new to NASCAR...is this track always as boring as today?

Anonymous said...

I seem remember in the old days they used to say "22 gallons of Unocal 76 racing fuel" during pitstops, Squier even did it with whatever 76 was called in those days, so I don't see the big deal on Sunoco.

Yes, just a coincidence. Fox is now totally out of DirecTV.

the racing here is far more exciting then it was before they reconfigured the track

Relax on the fuel thing. Mike Joy has no say in which products are mentioned or how they are mentioned on the Fox airwaves.

The sales integration of these big broadcasts is done well in advance by another team of folks. There are big lists of things that have to be done in-race other than commercials, and they get checked off all race long.

Mike has not lasted this long not being an up-and-up guy.

H Hotel was horribly placed.

I bed SPEED REPORT runs long..then VL will be shortened for WT :-)

Anonymous said...

Let me be (one of) the first to say it, because it will become a big Silly Season issue on the different TV shows as the season goes on:

Hendrick WILL make a run at Carl Edwards (to replace Mears)this year (he might deny it, but he said he wasn't going after Jr, didn't he?).

Carl's contract is up at the end of the season. Roush fans better hope that Roush doesn't act like he typically does and try to go cheap with Carl (keeping a unusually large part of his merchandise revenue as he typically does with his drivers). Because if he does? Carl is gone. He will have no trouble getting a sponsor at Hendrick.

You heard it here first! ;)

Phathead said...

what is with FOX's fascination of going to an incar shot after a wreck like Jeff Gordon's? That is completely classless in my eyes

Newracefan said...

Well we got a red flag this time

Anonymous said...

Cue up the replay of 24 & 17 at Chicago 2006. Also turn 2

Sophia said...

OMG!!!!! HARD hit for Jeff.

CRIMENY

HORRIBLE on the replay...remiinds me of that wreck in SPARTA a few yeas back but to a lessor degree...OUCH

Anonymous said...

VL will not be shorter. WT will start later.

Anonymous said...

Was there any catch fetch on the interior wall that Jeff hit?

I know his radiator wound up on the track, but did anything keep it from flying out into the infield where fans might be?

stricklinfan82 said...

Soph,

I was thinking the same thing about Jeff Fuller's crash at Kentucky 2 years. I'm glad he's okay. I think they addressed that problem there and hopefully Las Vegas does the same thing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I still think it was tough to take that camera shot of Jeff in-car after the wreck. Hopefully, they were listening to the scanner and heard him talking. Otherwise, that was not really in line with the way networks have done things over the years.

Sophia said...

DW is SO CORRECT...NO EXCUSE to leave the drivers vulnerable at those openings on a hard inside wall. As many wrecks as we have seen SIMILAR to this, it should be a rule to "AT LEAST" have stacks of tires around to help buffer things...they fixed the issue at SPARTA by the next race IIRC.

That was scary.

Too many crashes this weekend.

Newracefan said...

Mike Joy prefaced the replay of the incamera shot by saying JG was ok, in that instance I am ok with it

Anonymous said...

Where are the pit reporters to talk fuel given Biffle's issue

Anonymous said...

fine line between showing the drivers condition after a wreck, and gratuetus voyarism, just because he wasn't knocked out doesn't mean we need to hear how hard he hit

Phathead said...

I didn't mind the replay of the wreck, but the fact they went to an incar shot mere seconds after the wreck is uncalled for. You don't know the condition of the driver, even if he is on the radio.

FOX seems to have a habit of doing this kind of think. Part of me cringes to think that they woulda done the same thing with Earnhardts wreck in the same situation.

I just don't consider that excusable at all.

Anonymous said...

SPEED report says they will dump right into victory lane after the race. Whether they mean after the checkers or after the broadcast ends is anyone's guess. JD?

Daly Planet Editor said...

The replay was fine, but if Fox had taken that first in-car live shot and Jeff was injured or unconscious, it would have been a very bad decision.

Sophia said...

about the in car cam, indeed, hope they HEARD from Gordon..it's too much a voyeur factor...I was still surprised how much they showed the replay of a stunned Reutimann last year..they replayed that a lot.

StFan, I can't remember if they redesigned the SPARTA wall or just added a bunch of tires or BOTH..but something needs to be done about the inside walls not having SAFER barriers.

Hope Jeff is ok.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 8:03PM,

It is big brother Fox, so there should be no problem even if the post-race show is still on the air. That has happened before. Time for the picture in picture again!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Isn't it interesting to see Chris Myers when he is not being all goofy? The guy is actually a veteran TV journalist who has several other shows on other networks where he is very serious and does great interviews.

Newracefan said...

I wonder if the in car shot was previewed first to make sure they saw JG taking off gloves, etc and then showed for all of us to see as a way of confirming he was ok. I had more trouble with the Reutimann shot, I don't think that ever should have made the airwaves

Anonymous said...

This is becoming a weekly issue.

What happens to pit reporters in the final laps of a race ??

Where are they?

Anonymous said...

JD, why would SPEED/FOX compete with themselves on post-race?

Newracefan said...

I don't think Chad is up for talking, he is not a happy man. Nascar Performance should be interesting next week. I wonder if he is going to beon TWIN this week. Cause Mikey won't be too happy either but at least they all made the race and are still in the top 35

Anonymous said...

What an interesting conclusion to this race? who will make it on fuel? who can win? Is the track clean? Who said this race was boring?

Anonymous said...

Hmmm. I was the one who noted on Friday (In "In-Progress at Las Vegas on SPEED) that the promos for NASCAR races on FOX shown during "American Idol" were short (15 seconds), showed no drivers or storylines, and mentioned no sponsors.

They just showed the promo for the Atlanta race. It had the same music and graphics as the other race promos, but actually showed two drivers (Gordon and earnhardt jr.), mentioned a storyline, and had the sponsor name of the race and a Sprint logo on the end.

Interesting. We'll see if the same promo shows up on American Idol this Tues-Wed-Thurs.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, this is a good scenario for Fox.

The rights fees are paid for the race, not the post-race interviews. Fox is OK with it, and was last season. It also happened with TNT and ESPN.

Good broadcast by everyone on the Fox team. It's just a shame that they're in hurry-up, get off the air mode. I'd sure like to hear from David Ragan, Travis Kvapil, Matt Kenseth, and others. I understand that they need to get to the cartoons but maybe some time in the future we can get these networks to set aside a half-hour or hour for a comprehensive post-race show every week.

before we leave tonight's race: when the #20 wrecked today, i asked why the cameras didn't stay with the car until stewart was safely out of the car. that long shot is significantly different than being inside the #24 immediately after such a violent hit.

so my question for the tv guys: how is that decision made? i know it's disturbing for the friends and family members watching at home or in the motorcoach lot to see that -- or worse -- and not be ready for it. as a fan, i don't need an in-car until we're all certain the driver is, in fact, OK! a long shot is what i want until that driver is out of the car and on his way to the ambulance.

could someone fill us in on how the process develops in these sorts of cases? thanks!

Bobby said...

Artie knows very well he was burned after the Reutimann incident at Fontana, so the Fox crew is in touch with each other -- Barry Landis, Pam Miller, the spotters, the radio observers -- before triggering the shot. If he can catch the driver speaking, then the shot is proper. If he sees something suspicious, it's a no. He once said whilst at an NFL game, he was given a message on his cell phone about Elliott Sadler's nasty crash at Talladega (the first one) and after the game was on his phone calling Hermie wanting to know what happened.

One of the Fox "gag" clips is obvious that the crew does look at the track. Darrell is shown with horse racing track announcer's binoculars, and often the booth relays to the truck where to go.

I think the 4-way split on pits reflects on the fact pit stops are becoming a part of the sport and by showing four teams instead of just three, it is a must that more teams means more headaches. The race off pit road graphic could go back to the old form of showing pit clocks.

Bobby said...

Sophia,

The Championship Belt used by Las Vegas reflects on the city being the home of major championship boxing matches. It's similar to the guitar at Nashville, or the grandfather clock at Martinsville.

As for Digger, rain delays are meant to be fun and frolicking. There's no use in an old race film when an impromptu comedy show with the drivers, crew members, and broadcasters as the stars helps fans because they know they are keeping a fun watch on their heroes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bobby,

Thanks for the info on the belt. I was wondering the same thing as Sophia....uh oh! Did I really say that? :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

The reason that ESPN ultimately went to the drop-down graphic that reveals the car number and position as they cross the line is for exactly that reason.

Unless it is a short track, it is hard to tell who is who these days.

Anonymous said...

Also, I could not find NN on the list (can't believe I LOOKED for it..what a difference a year makes!) Of course I got the explanation here. Thank GOODNESS for the Planetheads. :-)

NRFAN

I feel the same way about no Kenny on TWIN. I was most disappointed Kenny was only the last call on WT tunnel. Yes, JD, the SPEED boys have lots of work to do since most of us LOVED THE CHEMISTRY with Mikey and Kenny. The soul of the show..they keep messing things up and the new tweaking is not working so far.

Switching things around might have worked in the old three Stooges movies (there were actually Six stooges with only two originals)
I was always a Marx Brothers fan myself...course, they were still good after Zeppo left (after 5 movies) since we still had Groucho, Harpo and Chico...sigh. On old IWC I thought of Benson as Harpo since he rarely spoke.

It's the PANEL's ONGOING CHEMISTRY SPEED that we once adored. You done messed that up again this year...rotating guests is one thing but a rotating 'panel du jour' well, is a bad idea du jour. >:-o

If TWIN is full of 'pretaped junk' prepare to hear me whine afterwards.

I can hear you folks thinking.

Yes, we DO NEED NN, the late night version.

Besides, AB would make a good late night host..:)

I've been told the oil tank lid was not secured.
The win should not be affected, but the pocketbook will be, I'm sure.
We'll find out on Tuesday, most likely.

And just to add to FOX, thank you for the shot of the cars crossing the finish line. Much appreciated.

And the points will be affected (he's the points leader), as well as what his crew chief will be doing on Sundays for the next six weeks...

"If there is debris....lets see it."

"NASCAR does not always tell FOX where the debris is."

But we should see it when they pick it up!

Regarding Kenny Schrader, didn't I hear that he was riding a motorcycle with Kyle Petty between all of the tracks for the first so many weeks of the season. For that reason, he can't possibly get back to Charlotte for TWIN.

Hey All,

There is a new post up about the weekend TV coverage. There will be posts up tomorrow for NASCAR Now and TWIN. Thanks as always.

Spring, on either RACE DAY or the long FOX PRE RACE (my NASCAR intoxicated brain can't 'member) I do believe somebody (and I think it was DW) mentioned how Kenny had been riding his bike around the country but apparently was feeling tired...and had said something about putting his bike on the truck and flying home.

Now whether that was talk or comes to fruition, don't know.

So if DW said it, I guess that means it was on FOX Pre Race. But yes, somebody mentioned earlier he and Kyle P were riding their bikes to lots of the races.

WOW, what a hard hit by wonder boy, it was very scary. To throw the radiator onto the track. I hope Bruton Smith changes that for next year.

What happens to the pit reporters each week in the final third of the race? They just disappear. Is there a Fox edict that they stand down, so Mike Joy, DW,and Larry McReynolds can say the same thing over and over and over? They don't even go to the Hollywood Hotel much anymore either.

There are so many questions I have as a viewer that seem to go unanswered because they take a union break until post-race interviews. Just my opinion.

I miss the old guys on Monday night. It's boring now.

Actually they do. Race control always tells the flagman "put it out, put it out, debris in turn two", And that's where the network get's it's information.
