In-Progress From Bristol: Sprint Cup Series Race on ESPN
Things are getting serious this time of the year for both the teams and the TV networks. The ESPN coverage is on the verge of shifting over to the ABC Broadcast Network for The Chase and Saturday night in Bristol should be a good test of the TV crew.
Allen Bestwick will host the hour-long NASCAR Countdown show at 7PM from ESPN's Infield Pit Studio. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. This newly-paved track has resulted in some very different racing and that should be the main topic of conversation.
It will be Dr. Jerry Punch calling the play-by-play action from the announce booth in the race tower with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside for analysis. Down on pit road will be Dave Burns, Shannon Spake, Jamie Little and Mike Massaro.
This crew is coming off a Nationwide race that was so fast and so furious that no one really got a handle on the action until it was almost over. Incidents were missed in commercial, the championship fight took precedence over the racing action and the lack of frequent caution periods made the commercials seem incredibly intrusive. Basically, it was a tough night for the TV gang.
It should be interesting to see if ESPN stripped-down the broadcast to deal with the sixteen second laps and the two-wide racing under green that will probably dominate the night. Almost all the production elements from the SportsCenter updates to the Tech Center explanations and the replaying of the driver audio simply did not fit into the tight time constraints that this race mandates.
ESPN tried to force pre-recorded "soundbites" with the drivers into the telecast. Also, pre-produced "bumpers" of drivers walking-up and looking into the camera before commercial break were used while the race was under green. The results were disastrous. Lap-after-lap of green flag racing was missed.
Sometimes, the network would return from commercial, do a recap of what was missed and then go right back to another commercial break. As a viewer, it was maddening.
On Wednesday night, SPEED aired the Craftsman Truck Series race from this very track. The action was intense and the racing was outstanding. Viewers saw SPEED take a stripped-down approach that put the focus of the telecast on the track and nowhere else. Pit reporters were heard and not seen, all the teams were covered and the commercials were inserted right after a pass was completed. It worked.
There are a lot of forces at work on the ESPN coverage that makes shrinking the telecast very hard. ESPN has ten announcers, a Tech Center, an Infield Pit Studio, SportsCenter updates, a bottom line constant sports crawl and a lot of promos to do.
Even the short Nationwide Series race was so fast that it ended almost forty-five minutes early. If the Sprint Cup Series decides to run side-by-side and fight it out in the pits for position, it could be one of the shortest races in Bristol history.

I completely agree with the 9 bullet-points you listed last night. To make it an even 10 I've added one more to the bottom of the list. If they meet all or most of these objectives I will be the first to stand up and applaud them for making the necessary adjustments after last night's mess.
If Tony Reali was here he would be holding up a card with big "0.5" on it and I would be screaming "Under!" though. ESPN, I offer you the challenge to prove me wrong.
-Dropping the in-action SC updates.
-Dropping the video bumpers into the commercials.
-Using a wide shot to show the entire track for perspective.
-Keeping the race as the priority and The Chase as the background story.
-Limiting the infield pit reporter to audio inserts only.
-No Tech Center updates under green.
-No played-back features or driver soundbites under green.
-No triple pit splits because the overall action of pit road is more important on this one track.
-Two video boxes for replays so the live action does not stop on the screen.
- Interview a driver lower than 15th in points (the realistic Chase bubble cut-off point) when he falls out of the race (red flag 'filler time' doesn't count).
Your crazy if you think they can do everything you want done under caution....and we are not even talking about commercials!!! even cautions are short at Bristol.
Will be watching this race in the morning. I don't have high hopes for this coverage. Not after the mess they made of the NW coverage.
Why are cautions short at Bristol?
Anyone got the weather forecast?
Will this be the night ESPN changes the crawl so the "chasers" are in yellow? How exciting that will be! As we watch which also ran staggers into or out of the top 12.If it would stop at that fine, but it will not.I predict the race will again be secondary to this chase garbage.
Partly cloudy 70's no rain

last week Mich 27 laps 2mile
Bristol last year 61 laps .5miles
54 miles(Mich) VS 16 miles(Bristol)
Havent wasted my time all year watching ESPN's countdown, just turned it on, has it always started like it is the WWE (WWF for the old school)?
Bill H
I'm hoping its better, not optimistic. I'll set the second computer up for the radio broadcast since the leftovers of Faye are messing up local reception.
strick I love the Tony Reali & under! Too funny. I looked over while typing and laughed.
Hopefully the bottom ticker will be gone tonight, and cRusty is kept to a minimum. And the word "cat" can go too.
Along with several other repetitious phrases that are beaten to death.
If not TV goes to mute or off.
Have my fingers crossed and working on the toes that we have a better called race than Friday, I really don't want to give up the scanner for the radio
The UPS crew guy behind Reut sipping a coke is just too funny. Do crew members get chug points too?
Anon, you going to play this game all night long?
Cautions at Bristol often result in red flags...like last night.
The key issue on the table for tonight is lap times.
Should be interesting.
nrf,
I just got an email about that this week. Coke is working on the background players and you will be seeing others doing the same thing a lot more.

Paint sold at Lowes - really good stuff like Behr at Home Depot
It's a brand of paint.
Valspar is a paint and coating company. Best known for clear poly coatings
Funny about the crew member with the coke in the background. I saw the same thing during an interview yesterday. I remember laughing at the time. Looks like a trend.
HotPass Lineup
HARVICK
Darrell Waltrip
Jeff Hammond
EARNHARDT JR
Rick Allen
Phil Parsons
EDWARDS
Randy Pemberton
Hermie Sadler
KENSETH
Larry McReynolds
Wendy Venturini
I love that ESPN did not use JP and copany to v/o the last highlight package. Had to go to the radio guys to bring the level up.
@nrf--yes I noticed that last night as well when Mr. Petree was chatting with Jerry Baxter :). A crew member came in camera shot drinking his Coca Cola :)
Thanks for the Valspar info. They sent me an email and I had not heard of them before.
Good point on the radio calls of the race. First noticed that on TWIN and now even on the ESPN v/o's.
25 minutes into the broadcast and I hear the "b" word - bubbleboy!
bevo,
I find it amazing that DW was at the track and we did not see him on Raceday.
JD I'm surprised he didn't sub for ES on Trackside, must not have gotten there until today
JD,
I found that odd too but that's what they have for the lineup.
BTW notice the only audio clip of Punch they've used all day is Edwards flipping?
Well, its nice to see a full house for once.
I really hope the guys decided to change things around a bit and take a whack at doing things a bit different tonight.
Thanks for the Hot Pass info.
Seems like The Chase is the main story line.
Two different vesions of the starting grid. One on the Infield Pit studio crawl and one on the ESPN Bottom Line at the same time.
oops...versions
not to be too hard on Jamie Little, but doesn't every race performance affect your chance to make the chase?
We are three races away from the Chase, so I think the Bubble discussion is VERY important, especially since it is very close between 7th and 13th
Well, you may be hearing that all night long. Get ready.
Is that a bad thing... NASCAR is the one who added this to the Sport. It is like any other sport when we get close to the playoffs.
Why do they ask every driver - hows your car tonight?
Whats he gonna say ? It junk?
Can't win, awful.
How silly
All the other sports talk about is the number of Games back, playoff scenarios, who is in, who is out, etc.
If you guys remember, this was a tough thing for ESPN last season as they had to ease into The Chase talk and move away from the race talk.
Striking that balance tonight should be one element to watch on the TV side.
I wonder if we'll see any of the drivers that are NOT in the top 13 in championship points during the race tonight. I think the shot of Bill Elliott and Kenny Schrader will be the only time we'll see them tonight and certainly they will not be mentioned either.
Jo - It is a "Pre Race" Show, I think that is the most important question. And most drivers are honest about their car. "Well it wasn't very good in practice, so we will see in the race" etc.
I hope the guys keep the energy up tonight. I've been noticing that a lot of the highlight calls used lately on both speed and espn have been from mrn...
Do you guys remember the rain delay on ESPN at Bristol where the fans started doing the wave and NASCAR timing and scoring started to count the laps on the scoreboard?
RC was clocking the lap times on a stopwatch and told the ESPN pit reporter (might have been Punch) the crowd was a little loose in turn 3.
Hahaha JD I remember that.
Good luck to everyone watching the race tonight. I just got a radio so it will be pictures only for me on the TV
"that boy ain't right" heh.
Be nice to see Schrader one time...
Got email saying they are not going to talk to Tony...we shall see...
Daly Planet Editor said...
Be nice to see Schrader one time...
you did it was on Raceday, don't count on it anywhere else
As in Tony won't talk to them or they are hoping it will blow over if they avoid him for a while
I didn't hear a lot of confidence in Gordon's voice..
nrf,
No clue on that one. Probably for the best. What if he wins tonight...
there's your valspar commercial (a nice Minnesota company:)
Matt he looked pretty smiley to me, you know that sneeky smile like he knows something we don't. Hopefully it's he has a great car.
What a crowd it must take 2 hours to walk to those seat at the top
Maybe you're right nrf.. I've never been a real fan of his, but it'd be nice to see him win again.
Haha great anthem tonight.
That anthem rocked!
--KarenB
Great National Anthem. Neat looking outfits to.
Those kids did a lot better than some of the adults have done previously and they even remembered the words.
I love the MRO kids! I've always loved looking at drivers watching their kids...especially Bobby watching as a proud Daddy!
Always the best anthem all year.
nrf, having climbed to row 66, it's not quite 2 hours, but it does leave you breathless. LOL
Hmmm, no bottom ticker. I haven't seen it tonight.
weird. normally the trackpass doesn't include the hotpass commentary but today it does.
TRL I started getting tickets a Dover that let you use the elevator to the second level. 8 steps up further and I can see almost everyting everything. Not to mention restroom with limited line and food close by.
They hyped up the wave on ESPN and then went to commercial right before it happened...
Well I guess they're time-delaying it by a minute or two.
very chilly in the old 88 tonight. Rick Allen asked TJ about the blow up with Jr last week and he was not convincing. His coms check to Jr got a frosty yup.
Chad was impressed with the wave. Finally figured out what he was talking about after Alex let me know they were tape delaying it for TV
they showed us the wave...I'm shocked!! and delighted!
I'll be watching Harvick's channel for the most part tonight - DW and Hammond
Yes I'd be shocked if ESPN remembers Schrader or Awesome Bill tonight :(
Have PRN on and ESPN for pictures. Will be nice to hear about the 30 other drivers out there tonight :)
Bevo want to bet DW calls him "rookie"
"Welcome to the Show" got me fired up. Loved the opening and the kids were darling.
I would like to see Tony in the top 3 just to force the issue...winning would definitely create an interesting situation.
Flashcubes again tonight.
Awesome flashcube display! And AP's discription of pit road was great.
Well...not sure how long I will last....music gig got cancelled...weather is hot and muggy no storms around...but FM PRN is very staticy.sp? wah...
I swear Punch got more excited over the wave than he has the last 5 races!!
I will channel surf, photo edit and check this place to see what is going on.
:)
Feeling queasy and not sure I can take camera work and ESPeeN aggravation.
:)
Green and Yellow colors on the race ticker... Ahh I remember this from last year. Christmas in August!
I like it though!
I need me a boogety boogety boogety
DW on HotPass did his boogity deal again. Him and Jeff are so excited tonight.
Blackflag for Jr already
How did TV not know this about Jr?
funniest moment on qualifying the other day was Elliott saying he didn't feel so old cause Schrader was there...love those guys!
good grief, Junior in trouble already....at least the cameras had this one...
So, lets see how they track Jr. coming through the pack.
It took 12 laps to know Jr didn't start correctly????
What was he thinkin'
How did TV not know? They mentioned it prior to Jr. taking the penalty, and showed what he did on replay. What else could they do?
nrf -
good one!
Erik, you watching the same race?
Vile Kyle jumps the restarts race after race, but let's call out Jr....geez.
Erik, did you see the NASCAR Confidential episode where they showed race control?
pammh, that's a restart not the intial start of a race
Its Biffle with Waltrip on TWIN this Monday.
the high shots are good, but can't they widen them out so we can see more cars?
Why doesn't ESPN use split screen? When they do the camera's are on a car and a crew chief. No racing.
Yeah I did. I will rewind it on my DVR, but I could swear that TV mentioned the black flag prior to Jr's trip down pit road.
I'm not sure on what lap handed down the decision. PRN may have beat TV to it by a lap or two.
Lots of side by side camera there-
why were we looking at Jeff's car like that? so dumb!
ummm-close up of a 1/4 panel is NOT a good view! grrr..
KB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Punch is incredible. Edwards bangs into Montoya a bunch of times and Punch doesn't even notice
sophia--did you try the PRN link on the NASCAR homepage? I *think* it's free...it didn't ask me to sign in and I'm not logged in on the site.
i so wish i had hot pass to hear dw and hammond
Doc is trying and DJ seems to be getting more used to jumping in to the pxp
DW doing pretty good so far but you can tell he misses having someone to bounce stuff off of in the booth
At least we're hearing more about guys not in the Chase.. I'm pretty surprised but grateful.
I love how a guy who started 5 and is now in 7th is "coming"
Interesting that they haven't mentioned the biggest mover yet. Think Tony is being blacklisted tonight?
I was noticing the same thing...Hamlin, Boyer and Stewart all started outside of the top 20 and are running 11, 12 & 13...i was going to wait until they made it into the top 10 to start complaining
Do we know why Kyle Petty is 6 laps down and Sterling is 4?
kudos to the infield team
i have never been more annoyed by a graphic than I was just then....
gymmie
Nope, thanks but PRN is PAY ONLY at NASCAR.com
have to sign up for 14 day pass.
no thanks.
nrf, to be honest, I've been listening to PRN & I didn't hear why from them either.
Sterling is 4 laps down because of the contact with Jimmie.. which I'm pretty mad about because I'm a big Sterling fan.
Not many different drivers mentioned yet. And no mention of Tony - punishment espn style?
Wow a caution is out and they caught it & no bottom ticker Those are good things
Now why are they still using big graphics during green flag?
Note to truck 43 drivers - mention them all!!!!
The race is the story, not the chase every minute
Like that Andy Petree nailed that one immediately. I bet he will follow up on that.
Petree flies under the radar, but he knows his short track stuff.
Punch is going to be out of luck if he keeps saying this is going to be a slugfest. Looks just like great racing.
sophia-I'm gonna do something JD doesn't like-here's an internet FREE link to radio...
http://www.warpradio.com/player/player.asp?listenerID=&login=&page=stream&id=13946&ver=9&br=IE&os=win
matt,
Thanks for the Sterling update, I was wondering about that.
pammmmmmmmmm,
As Sgt. Schultz would say:
I SEE NOTHING!
thanks, jd! you seeing nothing means i hear everything!
i guess that since there is a scoring ticker on top, the booth is exempt from doing a field reset
;)
jr drivin like his daddy

'bout time!
Jr is driving like a wild man
*giggles* at JD ;)
From what I can see, Pennzoil has paid some serious $$ to someone for the "hood cam" for Harvick! That is NO view also..Geez, poor Sadler-pass thru penalty too.
Our first behind-the wall report!
boooooooo
Green flag run and we have Truex crew fixing the car on one side and Brewer on the other. WTH
That green flag tech report wasn't pretty either.
i guess i should put my last post into context...side x side of truex car and tech center during green flag racing ---booooo
Video bumper. Oh, the cruelty!
WOw top 15 guess that's better the the usual 5-10
Still too many commercial breaks, compared to the other networks. We just had five minutes of racing between breaks. And if I have to look at one more second of Kyle Busch's ugly mug up close, someone is going to get hurt.
Anyone have a theory why we had the Bottom Line on the race all night last night on ESPN and tonight we have only updates?

Try a tylenol!
Showing the 11 for 3 laps should be punishable by death!!!!!!! or any car, for that matter!
they have proven they understand the format of through the field, and the exicution is ok, but week on Shannon. Maybe after commercial they could do another fifteen
Just zoom in on the car number for 5 laps. That'll make good tv.
i am about speechless regarding the amount of commercials
jd, no real team sports to update from Beijing?
that would be w e a k.
Just missed the last 50 laps, thunderstorm built up right over us and lost power.
Cool thing they're doing on HotPass - under the ticker info about other cars status.
"The 38's changing lanes like I change underwear"
Did I hear Kyle right?
Anymore whining, or are you all set right now?
Sorry guys I get fired up easily :x
Liked the speed at the line graphic no wonder no one is passing anybody, except maybe the leader lapping people. At least that's what it looks like on TV anyway
99 and 24 had a great battle going
so, since we're running 17-18 seconds laps and the #31 is blocking pit road and the clean-up will take a LONGGGG time, i'm heading to the kitchen for a beer or two. maybe they'll throw a red to save us some laps.
Here comes the whining. Go for it folks!
Have we heard a lucky dog recipient named tonight?
JD, I believe it is because last night's race was ESPN2 which has 24/7 ticker, tonight is on ESPN, hence only the usual 18/58 updates, could be wrong though
big crash!! TS started that for sure-glad they showed it.
They did a nice recap of the top 15 before this with the pit reporters.
Let's see what they do during the caution flag.
pt-no idea...listening to PRN, but I would guess not.
Whatttt.. a Dave Blaney update?? ESPN is really trying to win me over tonight.
Hey, they tried a triple and pulled it off. That is hard at Bristol.
Are one of the bubble boys driving the #22 because it looked like they showed Dave Blaney on camera!?!
A lot of 2 tires taken
And I hate this Old Spice commercial. I wonder who got the lucky dog during this yellow. Will we ever find out? Great nighttime shot of the track.
prn interviewing burton. "any idea what happened out there, jeff?" "yeah, i got run over!" burton blames nemechek -- at least for thier part of the wreck.
wonder if we'll hear from burton after the commercial break on espn?
Just a heads-up, I have a column coming about the Planters, Old Spice and Go Daddy commercials.
Tasteless, creepy and just plain wrong. What happened to Mikey selling auto parts?
The shift from drivers back to actors has certainly been interesting this season.
Lucky dog 2 I think
I'll never eat another cashew as long as I live!
Old Spice commercial creeps me out, too.
84 back on track
jd the new napa commercial with mikey and ron capps is priceless.
The worst tv spots presume we believe the drivers wear their firesuits 24/7/365. Or perhaps Madison Avenue believes they do.
Carnage baby.. here we go it's starting to get exciting haha.
aaaand that's bristol.
The war of attrition is on. Maybe the field will pare itself down enough the booth can keep up.
Wow! That race was painful for so many!
DANG. Not been paying much attention (Too nauseated to watch) but hasn't the coverage been better...I hope.
Big mess 55 in it too, I wonder if we'll ever see him or anyone else's damage that is still running
Watch out for vapor lock, had that problem during the truck race
Did you see Jr slide through that carnage?
Sophia said...
(Too nauseated to watch) but hasn't the coverage been better...I hope.
Yes, it is much better than last night. Did we offend them enough last night to make some difference?
junior is giving instruction to bill elliot on how to fix his car;)
Now that Casey has a new job he's decided to throw his spotter under the bus.
This has hugh implications for the top 35, especially if the 55 id trashed not only the chase
Big shot for Robby... Rear ended then a first hand view of Kahne's rear axle. That would make for an interesting in-car camera
I can't believe Casey trashed his spotter like that.
bevo said...

So that was ESPN'S problem in the booth last night...vapor lock!
Thanks, JD...I those are my 3 worst as well...i certainly change the channel when any of those commercials come on NO MATTER what I am watching.
Nice job Elliott and Reut to get by with minimal damage.
5 wasn't hooked by the 55 the 5 hit the 55, big difference
I am bummed so many in the wreck..poor Mikey...HORRIBLE SPOTTER by Mears! Geez...that guy needs to sweep floors for a while and get an eye exam.
oh, I DID just catch the BLANEY SITING when I turned up the volume on the tv earlier!! :)
It is a little early to proclaim THE monstor moment of the race is it not?
okay, they are interviewing guys after the wreck, that gets a thumbs-up, if nothing else!!
Show the 55 will you is it drivable??
Somebody got the infield medical center memo. They are following up with everyone tonight. Great job.
JD, so far it's a much better broadcast than last night's race. Maybe ESPN folks read this blog!
Woo driver updates.. nice job.
Guess we will be hearing that one on Monday at 8PM.
Nice Bowyer! :)
Thanks Clint.. I was starting to forget why I didn't like you, but you just reminded me.
This just re-inforces my opinoin of Boyer...winer and baby
vicky! Maybe...ouch! With all the email grief I get, you know it.
Last season they were giving me grief during the race, not they wait till after.
At least no one got fired....lol.
JD
i guess i am not alone
That does it. ESPN has no business playing a radio transmission from Bowyer calling out another driver's sponsor like that.
Absolutely classless and ridiculous.
I'm not MW fan, but how can a supposedly reputable network pull a bushleague stunt like that.
On with MRN or PRN or whatever is on this week. I'm done.
Was it really necessary to air that comment by Bowyer. Trying to stir the pot or what.
They changed the music for the Kobalt tools commercial
wow! bowyer just trashed mikey BIG TIME! interesting audio and i appreciate hearing it but . . . i gotta wonder about putting that out there, especially when it's clear it wasn't the 55's fault.
that had to be a tough call to make.
(and i'm not hating this coverage so far)
(that's called "damning with faint praise" lest anyone think otherwise!)
Three cautions, who have the lucky dogs been to this point in the race? No sponsor, ok, who have the 'recipients' been?
This wreck is something else...I just had to start sipping some cola...this is depressiing for so many guys.
OUCH!! Clint Bowyer was kind of rough on Mikey wasn't he?? Clint has no clue what happened....sometimes, I know they say things on the radio...but I wish ESPN would pick and choose a little better....but what am I saying???
This is ESPU..pepe lepew.
Oh, thanks Pammmmmmmmmmmh for the warp link...gonna try it.
Thanks Sgt. JD for not noticing. :)
I am happy the coverage has been better even though I have been doing other stuff and not even taping. Who needs a tape when you have this place and highlights!
Off to try warp.
