Sprint Cup Series From Fontana, CA on ESPN (7 PM)

Last week in Bristol the NASCAR on ESPN gang had a very bad Nationwide Series telecast and rallied to have a great Sprint Cup show. This week in Fontana, the Nationwide race and paint drying were running head-to-head until the last fifteen laps. Hopefully, with so many storylines in-progress for the Cup teams the network will once again get itself organized for a good race telecast.

This week Allen Bestwick gets his full hour for NASCAR Countdown. Story selection should be interesting as this is the time of the year when "the race" vs. "The Chase" becomes a tough struggle for the TV crews. Here at Fontana and next week in Richmond making The Chase is going to be said countless times by countless reporters.

Bestwick will have both Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty alongside in the Infield Pit Center. There is absolutely no doubt that Rusty Wallace misses the ability to step-up and do some ESPN races as an analyst. Earlier this year, Rusty did both selected Sprint Cup and Nationwide races while Dale Jarrett was on vacation.

Now that the final seventeen race stretch has come to ESPN/ABC, Wallace is stuck in the infield trying patiently do deal with the cheerleading of Daugherty. One gets the feeling that Rusty has finally begun to understand what he gave up when ESPN made the change in the off-season.

Tim Brewer had a tough Saturday in the Tech Center and it seems that he is often put on the air before he has the time to sort-out the real issue that he should be addressing. Andy Petree seems to be continually disagreeing with Brewer, even after Brewer has held-up and pointed to all kinds of car parts. This should be something to keep an eye on during the Sunday telecast.

The key component once again for this entire three hour telecast is going to be the ability of Dr. Jerry Punch to keep the excitement level high. Punch failed miserably in the Nationwide race and both Jarrett and Petree jumped-in time-and-time again to describe the action while Punch was silent.

Only two races until The Chase begins on ESPN and this is the critical time to keep the excitement high and build the momentum for the sport as it heads-into the final ten races of the season. This responsibility falls squarely to Punch.

ESPN will use the regular pit reporting crew of Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Mike Massaro and Dave Burns. Last week this crew worked hard and had both good and bad moments. Saturday night in the Nationwide Series race, this crew of four tried several times to get through a full-field recap but once again never completed the rundown. It is going to be very important to rundown the full field several times during the Sprint Cup race.

Something really wrong with the 19, long pit stop again. Anyone know why?

Anonymous said...

Even if they don't do every single car, how about mentioning brief but important notes about cars outside of the Top 20. Small stuff like how Kurt Busch is doing to try and get back on the lead lap, how Waltrip keeps leading a lap for the Top 35 points battle and to prevent any others from doing it on caution stops, or how/why guys like Reed Sorenson or Regan Smith are struggling towards the back of the pack.

They just don't find important stuff about the entire field important.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Think it is fair to say that during the ESPN coverage most fans are pushed to use the computer for additional info and the radio for excitement?

Dot said...

Why not do a run down backwards and start w/42....once in a while.

Jessica said...

JD- that would be a very fair assessment.

Anonymous said...

hell, jd, forget excitement! i'm just trying to get basic race information! that's why i have to multitask.

Anonymous said...

JD, you are soooo right about Hot Pass. I'm loving this. They just showed what could have been potential disaster for Jr, when the left rear tire started rolling out of the pit box. You heard the spotter saying, "TIRE, TIRE, TIRE, GET THE TIRE". They caught it before it rolled out of the pit,and before Jr left the pit box. Really cool.

What was I thinking always watching ESPN???? Dumb blond moment.

It's so cool to hear Brad K talking from a driver's perspective and letting everyone know how tough it is to drive with the setting sun.

Dot said...

Bubble alert aborted when Jr skimmedd the wall. Oh boy TB in the big box. A great big box.

Anonymous said...

I will mention that I do use other methods to follow the race when TNT and Fox are around. And those networks aren't perfect, plus commercials force me to do this if I want as many details as possible.

However, ESPN does nothing to at least try to cause me not to do this. TNT struggled and added RaceBuddy. Fox mentions as many cars and things as possible and i give them credit for having FoxTrax via their web site.

ESPN does nothing to help us viewers who are fans of the entire sport and want to know everything possible about each driver and team.

They ignore any drivers outside the Top 15 or 20. They frequently take the racing off the screen for video packages, Tech Center reports, etc. and just don't seem to care about what we viewers think.

Thank you to DJ for filling us in on the Lucky Dog situation on the last yellow. I would still like to see Dr. Punch adopt the Mike Joy and Bill Weber approach of instantly identifying the Lucky Dog when the yellow first flies, so we're not solely dependent on an analyst occasionally jumping in and filling in that blank a few laps after the ensuing restart.

bevo said...

As much as I like DJ and AP the really glaring hole is someone who knows race strategy.

Newracefan said...

Bevo, that would be Larry Mac and he is already the busiest man in Nascar TV

Dot said...

Anon 9:34, I so agree with you.

My guy is Marcos. If not for the ticker, you wouldn't know he was there. Yeah, I know he's in the back, but still there none the less.

The idea of TB in a great big box is so pleasant - not on my tv - in a distant field, w/draftrax. In a field far far away

bevo said...

The only problem with HP tonight is they did too good of a job choosing the drivers, all in the top 12 so far. It really helps when they're spread out more so you can get more coverage of the whole field

Anonymous said...

Kenseth just said he's actually blinded by the sun on the backstretch. That can't be good.

Vicky D said...

This race is not on a radio station in Houston tonight, so we're stuck with DirectTV. And does anyone else have this problem, we have to turn up the volume during the broadcst, but when the commercials come on, they blow us out of the room.

I bet it's killing the script that there are "white name drivers" running in the top ten.

Jo,

stricklinfan82 said...

Plenty of yellow flags but ESPN sticks to waiting for green flag racing for those ridiculous Sportscenter Updates. Again, that same information is available on the 18/58 updates on this channel, the ESPN2 crawl, the ESPN Classic crawl, and the ESPNEWS network. No need to interrupt the race for this stuff, if we really want to know that stuff we would have no problem finding it without leaving the ESPN Family of networks.

On my tv I usually have the volume in the 40's - 50's (out of 100) but the national feed I have to turn it up in the 80's. You can imagine how loud the commercials blast, have to have a quick trigger finger on the volume control

Slightly off topic here, and probably a stupid question, but why does Ganassi Racing call itself Ganassi Racing WITH Felix Sabates? Every other team with co-owners are called Roush Fenway, Gillette Evernham, etc. Why don't they just call themselves Ganassi/Sabates Racing?

Instead of looking for side-by-side racing on the track ESPN is resorting to face-cams, pre-taped comments, and Jimmie Johnson running around by himself. Very disappointing approach in my opinion.

The wall cam that was used to illustrate cars getting sideways didn't lie, there are lots of cars out there running close and side-by-side.

here's the thing, jd. we just aren't getting any sense of the various strategies that are taking place around the track, the housekeeping details of what went on in the pits or re-setting the field just aren't being done and it seems we're getting a whole lot of "stuff" on the chase drivers. to me, this is all stuff that a solid PxP guy would handle.

i don't hear punch calling the race at all and dj and petree are trying but the overview is missing big time.

(by the way: the #1 car had loose lugnuts on the left front. did espn followup on that and i missed it? i just picked it up elsewhere.)

Vicky D said...

Bevo, those Aggies really had some issues with those lights!

"I hope the TV networks come down hard on this speedway for the light issues. That is ridiculously dangerous and completely unacceptable."

networks, hell! nascar needs to be all over them on this. i say no one from the speedway leaves the track tonight until every single light fixture is checked. way too dangerous.

Nice plug for Direct TV coverage of the hurricane via a local affiliate.

WOW. Sunset just got more gorgeous!!

JD, you asked are we not getting the bigger picture? More like one of those giant box with a jigsaw puzzle picture.

ESPN is always missing a lot of pieces thus info never complete. :(

One can return a puzzle but we can't get back the hours we lose trying to watch this race.

I was happy to hear Jr got in the chase.

Ugh...more full throttle bs.

IT's really starting to not be funny.

its a testiment to just how much more wind these COT's blow up when they go by in a bunch.

"does the pope . . . ?"

No, he goes to the Chevron station like everyone else.

As I said yesterday the track GM might want to freshen up her resume for Tuesday morning, the only reason it wouldn't be tomorrow is because it's a holiday

Even on restarts these shots aren't very wide and are, seemingly, used for artistic value with that slow zooming effect. Ugh.

Anonymous said...

What exactly is that garbled audio mess supposed to do?

No one can understand it, why bother?

Anonymous said...

WHY WOULD they show a full screen replay when they are in some heated green flag racing for the race lead!?!?!?!1

Ahhhh ESPN WHY?

stricklinfan82 said...

I still fail to see the value of opening 43 spotters' mics at the same time to hear a nonstop sequence of "Clear Clear Clear Car Clear Car Low Car High Clear Clear Car High Low Clear Good Job Clear Car Low Two Wide Three Wide Clear".

I have no sense of the individual stragaies of the teams, I don't know from lap to lap who has accomplished a pass or gone to the pits unless I read it here or can devine it from the ticker.

The race as a whole has no continuety and I am just not able to get involved because I am so busy trying to find information on what I see accidently as ESPN shows me what they want to talk about.

I am rapidly losing my desire to watch NASCAR when it requiers this much work to make it worthwhile. I would like to just enjoy the race a I can't. Maybe next year.

i nominate this anon for the TDP Comedy Tour!

as for the full throttle nonsense: here's an idea for you espn guys. how about you just let us hear the sounds of the cars as they get to speed? just like at a race? wouldn't THAT be fun?

Tell em AB!!!!!

Is it me or has ESPN forgotten about TS the last 2 races?

If I didn't know that KyB was on a different team, I'd swear he was in the 48.

Tipping the bottle, RW - I'll tell you what...

vicky d-

Yep :)

darbar-

It's owned by ISC... in other words the France's. But they have absolutely no connection to NASCAR :)

I think we may have just seen the point where Allen Bestwick could not take it anymore and just stuffed JP live on the air....that was interesting.

Bet they are talking about it during this commercial break.

Anonymous said...

Another comml. -- another caution.
Place your bets & fill those shot glasses.

Anonymous said...

jd, it almost felt as if everyone except AB is ready to call it a night! either that or they're all suffering from a short-term memory loss b/c bristol wasn't that long ago!

has brad d gone home for the night?

Newracefan said...

AB you are the man, just pick up that ball and run, we've got your back

Maybe the race broadcast is better on Sprint's Samsung Instinct.

Strick, you forgot one. "Still there".

Loved the Pope joke.

I agree Red, anon can join. Just needs a name.

Nope. Testament to bad management. Attention to details is the mark of good management.

They go from the excitement of Bestwick's voice to the somber death-like tone of Punch.

Another thing I hate on the screen is that they use YELLOW to show drivers that are on the bubble. Whenever I look at the screen I see that and think it's for a caution. Why couldn't they have picked a different color?

dj didn't get the stewart memo....

Robby & Tony both got a mention, attempting to fill larger glass.
Get ready....

Anonymous said...

hey! they remembered tony's racing tonight! wow. wonder if there was a round of espresso served during the break?

HOLY COW! DJ just said the word "strategy"!

Blue would be nice - Blue boys like the museum painting

Sauter lasted longer than I thought. And my boy Marcos running 27th. Patrick running 20th. I'm submitting a time card to ESPN since I have to mention these odd wad drivers.

Are the track crews going around the track tightening up the lights?

Anonymous said...

Dot
can we expense the liquor to them too?

Anonymous said...

Didn't Jr's crew adjust BOTH rear wweight jack screws that pitstop? Do they think they are that far off with their weight distribution?
