Sprint Cup Series on ABC Sports From Dover

The chaos of Dover is about to unleash itself on the 43 teams in the Sprint Cup Series. That is the known. The unknown is how that chaos will be handled by the ESPN on ABC production team.

Just as Dover calls for the drivers to be "up on the wheel" all the time, the track also calls for the TV announcers and crew to be "alert and focused" for the entire event. Which will be the bigger challenge is yet to be seen.

It will be Allen Bestwick anchoring the pre-race coverage from the Infield Pit Studio. If there was ever a track that sends Brad Daugherty completely over the edge, Dover is it. Look for the cheerleading volume to be set on high. Rusty Wallace rounds-out the infield panel and he has a great perspective on this track. Look for the Producer to try and use Wallace during the race for observations and questions to Andy Petree and Tim Brewer.

Petree will be with his broadcast partner Dale Jarrett and the face of ESPN's NASCAR coverage, Jerry Punch. This trio hosted the Nationwide Series race on Saturday and Punch struggled to even remember the names of the drivers in the cars. Often, it was Jarrett or Petree who called the action on the track or alerted Punch to a caution flag. This on-air dynamic will be key to watch as the 400 laps slowly tick away.

The pit road at Dover is completely inadequate. The four ESPN pit reporters are going to have to put in a little extra effort all day long where pit stops are concerned. Things happen quickly and there were both pit crew injuries and a pit road accident during the Nationwide race.

Unfortunately, all 200 laps of the Saturday race clicked away without ESPN being able to offer even one full-field rundown. While the ticker on the screen may carry the position of the cars and even some minimal data, only the pit reporters can fill-in the fans on the stories behind the positions on the track of the teams. Keep an eye on how often a rundown is offered, and what positions the network chooses to update.

There are two bridges over the Dover track and it is important to note how hard the Director has to work to eliminate them from the TV coverage. While they will be seen on replays and aerial shots, the ability of the cameraman to frame the shot just under the bridge on each and every lap makes for smooth coverage for the viewers at home.

Dover also lends itself to "speed shots" on the front stretch and from track level. Mixing these into the coverage helps the Director to convey to the fans the real feeling of speed as the hundreds of laps wind-down. The "speed shot" is where a small lipstick size camera is mounted in a fixed position and the cars speed by close to the lens.

Replays under green have been an issue at Dover for years. Choosing to replay a pit road incident or even a pass on the track while the race is green means flirting with disaster. Showing the replay full-screen is the big risk, but by using two video boxes on the screen and keeping the "line cut" of the race visible the Director can always switch quickly to the live box in the event of an accident.

On Saturday, pit reporter Shannon Spake moved to the Infield Medical Center and attempted to interview the drivers involved in incidents on the track. This is a crucial issue for the fans. In last week's race, ESPN was only interested in interviewing drivers if they were involved in The Chase. Anyone outside of the top 12 was suddenly not important.

What the network forgot was that NASCAR fans keep their drivers all season, and in many cases for a lifetime. Simply because that driver did not make The Chase does not change the loyalty of the fans. With all the incidents at Dover, watching to see who ESPN chooses to interview could be a big tip about the network's coverage philosophy over the final Sprint Cup events.

In the old days, the TV crew used to call this race "The 24 Hours of Dover" because of the multiple caution flags and the grinding 400 laps. Perhaps, the dynamic of The Chase will lead to more conservative racing and long green flag runs.

NASCAR Countdown hits the air at 1PM and race coverage begins at 2PM. You should be able to find both programs on your local ABC television station.

Once again, Jamie proves she does NOT know a darn thing about the inner workings of an engine ...

"at this point, it doesn't matter." OK, i am now officially finished with young mr busch. he had PLENTY of time to cool off and to be so dismissive of all the hard work his team is doing on his behalf right now is, for me, unforgiveable. i understand speaking "off the cuff" but that is NOT what we just saw. shameful.

gymmie: delete that screen shot: he no longer deserves my sympathy or understanding.

Anonymous said...

red - Kyle was even more dismissive in his MRN interview ...

Heck, even before the last two races ... He's been dismissive of himself and how he implodes during the Chase ...

Anonymous said...

red- I'm sure the air base has restricted airspace, which probably complicates timing the fly over. Oh, and GO Steelers.

Anonymous said...

So, if the 11 is leaking oil / grease out of his rear end ...

Why haven't they black flagged him??

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is typically the time when ESPN has struggled to define itself. Should be interesting to see how they close this one out.

Anonymous said...

Ok, huge brain fart here, but didn't KB drive for Hendrick last year? So if the exact same thing happened last year does this make it gradge wide conspericay against him?

Vicky D said...

When they were having the flyover at Minute Maid Park for the season opener, the jets flew over our house lots and lots of time to just get the timing and formation right. It didn't happen - there are so many variables with that.

"So, if the 11 is leaking oil / grease out of his rear end ...

yep. inquiring minds want to know. guess chaser leaked oil is significantly safer than non-chaser leaked oil . . .

richard in nc: it is certainly restricted space but only going in, not coming out. i just think it gets mis-timed somehow. seriously: i've been there 6 times and it's never been during the anthem.

and i was a steelers fan during the great years so i'm right there with ya'! (but truex's helmet is STILL awesome!)

Anonymous said...

caution flag should fly soon - JJ needs it.

Anonymous said...

and here we are at lap 235+ and still no thru the field. again, why am i not surprised?
the wheels are coming off this bus pretty fast . . .

Commercial during green flag stops, guess no one important was going to pit soon. I wonder if they will even try to reset the field after all this

Vicky D said...

Anon at 4:39 if you are a fan of a chaser then there's not a problem! If not, you can't even find out if the pit stalls have been changed to accommodate the Labonte & Schraders cars.

Anonymous said...

hey! who knew they had a camera on truex's feet ala boris said at a road course today? wonder if they could have utilized that camera earlier or anything . . . ?

Anonymous said...

It seems to me the longer the race has gone , the coverage has gone downhill.

Jamie has no clue 2 tires only then 2 more for the left are in the picture, so she announces left tires too. Why is she there?

Long solo shots of cars on pit road - is there no one racing during that green?

AB please take over now, no one is doing real PbP

Anonymous said...

Np red--it's truly a shame that he still hasn't learned. Yes it's one thing 30 seconds out of the car but he had plenty of time to calm down and collect his thoughts.

ri88girl--the good Doc does that every race it seems :(.

Anonymous said...

and bestwick jumps in to add "watching ambrose and raines bump right now . . ." and then immediately pick up again to continue fuel mileage discussion -- THAT'S a professional PxP example right there.

Anonymous said...

Vicki - I'm not even sure IF the guys at MRN have said anything about Bobby & Schrader's pit stall issues ...

Anonymous said...

that was neat to see red! I can't recall other than the road courses with Boris that we've seen that.

Anonymous said...

hey jd? i think i asked this before but i don't remember an answer: at dover, where do they place that camera that just gave us that "gopher cam" angle against the outside wall?

Newracefan said...

Just ocurred to me if the 18 is just OFF and not OUT they can't move to his pit stall, when did he go from being OFF to OUT.

Anonymous said...

what just happened to the audio feed?

Daly Planet Editor said...

One hundred laps to go. Time for the big scene set and entire race recap.

Anonymous said...

Now that the 18 is out of the race, the 43 crew has the option to move to the open pit stall are make the 96 move. It wouldbe nice if ESPN would let us know who moved!

Daly Planet Editor said...

its a lipstick cam attached to the wall.

Lucky debris caution for JJ this time.

It's like there is someone in his ear telling him what to talk about so there is a lag time

Anonymous said...

Luckily, we haven't seen that uber creepy Best Western commercial with the drafting kids and Mikey/Reuti ... That one scares me ...

Anonymous said...

When there is a caution, especially for a wreck or someone with damage, why is it that Punch and Co. take a somber tone as if there is sadness and no excitement to it.

Wouldn't it be better to go the opposite route to get the audience's attention?

Newracefan said...

Reut still on pit road something is wrong, and now he's been lapped.

They interviewed crew chiefs for 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The issue with the 2nd place car? Not in the chase.

That's dumb.

Anonymous said...

GREAT answer from the #17 crew chief:
"do you guys have anything for those guys in front of you?"
"yep: we have matt in the car!"
i'm liking that.

Anonymous said...

Suggestion: Talk to the second-place car's crew chief!

Oh wait. It's Mark Martin; he's not a Chaser. If he should pull off a win, are they even going to bother interviewing him in Victory Lane?

Anonymous said...

@anon 5:24--we've been asking that question for 2 years now...no answer and no change.

Vicky D said...

Brotherflounder - that's why I don't like the chase. Too much emphasis on those drivers and nothing (or barely nothing) on the others.

Tracy D said...

Newracefan: Reutimann pitted outside his stall - they held him a lap.
Listening on MRN, back and forth with TV commentary.
Poor Reutimann.

stricklinfan82 said...

And the interview problem is not limited to non-Chase drivers. It also includes non-Chase crew chiefs.

Why can't Punch call the race between Kenseth and Edwards? Instead he gives us random facts about Kenseth's history while he gets to the bumper of Edwards and looks to make a move.

It's not play by play at all.

Not the first time that's happened either. Remember earlier when they were 3-wide for the lead? Silence, then stats on the number of leaders and lead changes.

He doesn't know how. If he did know how to do play by play, he wuold have been doing it the last two years.

Anonymous said...

And Mr. Kenseth says "hello Mr. Edwards"

Anonymous said...

Again! As Kenseth makes the pass on Edwards, they send it to Jamie Little for a pit report? What is that?

Anonymous said...

WHAT!?! why do you switch to an in-car and away from the shot that made sense there??? you know, the one where we could see BOTH cars as they battle for the lead.
i am disgusted.

Just let AB, Rusty, DJ, and Andy do the PXP.

All in all, nice coverage by ESPN...mentioned most of the drivers on the track at least once...followed the entire field coming across the line...are having some good post-race interviews.

Oh, yeah...my man Chad and Mikey on TWIN Monday!

I have been wondering. Did Clint Bowyer get mentioned today. I'm sure I missed it, I did step away a few times.

JD I noticed especially in the race today that the role of Jerry Punch has bene downgrade greatly. The people who do the most talking are DJ, and Andy. Allen even will call some of the action when they send it to the pit studio. Do you think this is a sign that ESPN is aware there is a problem with Jerry Punch? I hope the next step is they show Jerry the door and put him on pit road.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 6:23PM,

Maybe TWIN will get a last minute substitution and have Biffle on the show tomorrow ... instead of Chad ... or in addition to Chad & Mikey ...

Nah, that would never happen ... We are NOT that lucky ...

Listened to MRN's broadcast today as I was on the road.

Man, if the ESPN guys knew half as much as the MRN guys do about what's happening on the track, the TV show would be a LOT better.

WOW 320 posts.

I missed being here again..last week no power for a couple of days, this week stomach flu and I just now had the energy to pickup the laptop and use it while in my jammies (they look like what the boys wear on TWIN)

Enjoy reading what I missed..I was so sick i could not look at tv much but 'listened' with eyes close. did catch the last hour though. great finish.

I also appreciated the camera work. Last night catching the bridges in the line of cameras so much was a bit annoying.

JD,
After Sunday's Countdown show I have decided that I would like to see AB gone, the old thing about one bad apple spoiling the whole barrel.
Mike Massaro or Marty Smith could easily and well replace him and they don't come with AB's "baggage" of his own personal agenda, repeatedly giving ESPN a black-eye.
I don't know why you don't like JP, and I do feel that it is personal, but I feel that he is not as manipulative and controlling as AB and thus way ahead of him. That JP feels his role is that of facilitator to ease the way for others to have their say and not try to bring them to his own preconceived goal, to keep himself in the background. I am sure that that is not always easy to do.
AB will never be a Steve Byrnes.
Marybeth
PS Once again I have worked long and hard to leave a lot of "hot-button" words and phrases out of this. : )

Daly Planet Editor said...

Marybeth,

What are you talking about? Your comment makes no sense to me at all.

AB worked his way up to the Infield from pit reporter and is doing a fine job in that role.

What personal baggage are you talking about?

I don't like Punch's work because he never seems to know what's happening on the track and frequently just stops talking when things get busy. He also uses cliches and garbage phrases over and over, and frequently just lists each car as it shows up no the TV. That's not PBP.

Compare that to any of Bestwick's race calls on on YouTube and you'll see the difference.
