In-Progress From Phoenix: Sprint Cup Series on ABC

After hundreds of posts, thousands of comments and millions of page views, this is the next-to-last Sprint Cup Series in-progress race post of 2008 on The Daly Planet.

In terms of NASCAR TV, this has been a very long haul for the ESPN team. While they have gotten most of the publicity from the Sprint Cup Series coverage, the entire ESPN gang has been working the NASCAR circuit since February in Daytona.

Unlike the Fox or TNT production teams who stop by and then leave, ESPN "double-dips" by using Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree on the Nationwide Series for the entire season. Likewise, the ESPN pit reporting team of Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro have been prowling the pits for the past nine months.

It will be 3PM Eastern Time when the new leader of the ESPN team, Allen Bestwick, kicks-off the coverage from the Infield Pit Studio. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. This week, Ray Evernham will also be a member of the infield TV team.

Bestwick has been a workhorse for ESPN this year handling the Nationwide and Sprint Cup infield duties while also developing the brand new one hour NASCAR Now program on Mondays. His frequent flier miles by the end of this season will hopefully earn him a very nice winter vacation.

This weekend the clash in storylines between the racers and The Chasers continues. Mark Martin and Kyle Petty will not be racing in Homestead. Rumors of Joey Logano losing the #20 ride continue. Economic factors are eating at the sport from all sides. Somehow, the Jimmie Johnson vs. Carl Edwards scenario has lost a little luster. The selection of topics for the pre-race show should be a challenge.

Having four voices in the infield studio on a fast track like Phoenix is tough to do, especially when mixed with four pit reporters, three folks in the announce booth and Tim Brewer in the Tech Center. How things sort-out after the green flag falls will be interesting to watch. Any way you slice it, twelve announcers on a NASCAR race is a lot.

Dr. Jerry Punch is two races away from the end of what has seemed to be a very long season. Having Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the booth this season has helped, but it is still tough to watch a veteran reporter and nice guy like Punch struggle in the play-by-play role. It certainly has been a learning year for Jarrett, who has contributed quite a bit of the event coverage this season.

NASCAR Now ran a story Sunday morning on the fact that Spake and Little were on the top ten list of the most beautiful people in NASCAR. The challenge for both these young women is to close-out the season without asking any driver, crew chief or owner "how they feel" about any racing topic. Maybe asking some hardcore racing questions might move them up a notch or two for next year. By the way, Kasey Kahne was number one.

PIR offers the ESPN TV Director a wonderful choice of cameras to transfer the experience of the race to viewers at home. The aerial shots and the jib camera on Rattlesnake Hill will serve to set the tone and provide transition shots for everything from commercial breaks to in-race promos.

There are several low angle cameras on this track, including a robo-cam between turns three and four that moves with the field as they race by. PIR is the perfect track to bring TV viewers down low and get the feel of this short-track style racing at track level.

The audio from PIR on both Friday and Saturday was fantastic. Look for the continuation of an outstanding season from the NASCAR Media Group technical staff where the sounds of racing are concerned. Restarts should be exciting as the cars come up to speed.

Unless an extended caution flag comes out, Bestwick and his infield team will probably be heard and not seen once the race begins. It is tough to insert four announcers on-camera and get their comments on even one topic if the race is continuing in the background under green.

Keep an eye out for non-Chasers who fall out of the race to see if they are interviewed. Look for the pit road reporters being more aggressive and climbing pit boxes to talk to crew chiefs. If a big accident happens, watch for interviews with all drivers as they leave the Infield Medical Center.

No doubt Johnson and Edwards will dominate the telecast, but the stories of the race are there and it is up to ABC to tell them to the viewer. This track needs frequent resets of the field along with information about how drivers moved either forward or backwards in the line-up. With passing at a premium, the race off pit road will be crucial all day long. It should be a fun race to watch and the weather is great.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments on the Sprint Cup Series race from PIR on ABC. To add your opinion, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

JD, The arial shots are from the Goodyear blimp. The in-cars are being received at an antenna above the booth, then sent down to the TV compound between turn 4 and the start-finish line. Again, the only time a heli is used for in-cars is on really big tracks.

November 9, 2008 4:58 PM

You can't talk that way to the wizard behind the curtin.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD you asked the same thing i wondered too about the incar thing. I figured it was always the heli or blimp.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Last time I did PIR, which was the late 1980's, it was a helicopter.

Things always change in TV and cheaper is better. So, new technology might have changed the path.

The Loose Wheel said...

cheaper may be better, but they use HD cameras...ive never been a fan of the new style bumper cams they have now. figure the sponsors wouldnt be happy since it gives them one less place to advertise

Hey JD awhile back weren't you going to do a piece about your days in the production end of things ? Maybe you could in the off season, I think it would be pretty interesting.

Larry Mc has really done a good job transitioning to play-by-play.

Harvicks pitbox has lost power, going to generator power.

Nice directing today.

This seems to be one of the best races I've seen this year.. actual side by side battles throughout the field, and we're able to see a lot of it.

PammH said...

JPM, Harvick & someone else having a heck of a battle back in about 15th, according to the radio.

Daly Planet Editor said...

3bud,

I am going to Daytona on Tues and Weds for Grand-Am testing.

It should be interesting to see what drivers show up to test, especially NASCAR guys who are going to be running the Rolex 24 in Jan.

Old TV stories get boring...lol.

Holy crap. ESPN might realize that actual racing takes place back in the field.

I heard Petree talk about how the JGR cars blow a little blue smoke when they back off the throttle...my question is why hasn't anyone got someone from JGR to speak on the topic?

Anonymous said...

Keep showing Edwards ESPN. That will make your ratings better. Hahaha.

The Loose Wheel said...

well the JGR cars have done that for weeks. It was mentioned during the practice show by ESPN and they did a tech center situation and everything, let me know what Wendy finds out though.

Vicky D said...

Dot sometimes Nascar liveleaderboard locks up and I have to close it down and re-open it. Maybe there's a similar issue today.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, they actually put more than one antenna on the track, but since they went digital, no copters. Trust me. I do see the bias you all talk about, but it seems they are still spreading the wealth a bit.

bevo said...

Wendy says 20 crew "hopes" it's fuel burning off. Emphasis on "hope".

Sophia said...

Newracefan said...

Hey JD Red and I are about 10 miles apart and if we ever go to the same Dover race we may even meet :)

The booth has been much more cohesive in their narrative today. I think that Andy is actually a better pxp than even DJ. It has something to do with the flow of his speech pattern. DJ is to halting, and Doc...is Doc. I notice that DJ and AP are not keying off of what ever name or number Doc mentions to focus their comments. This means they don't get distracted by the insurtion of irrelivent information that takes away form actual calling of the action.

The pit reporters have been very good today as has the direction. The split with the two battles is great.

Ray seems to fit right in, and the only glaring thing seems to be the tech center.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot...im using FOX now.

Leaderboard worked great for me till today.

As for Tony, no issues, someone just saw what i've been seeing all weekend, the car blows smoke out the exhaust when they lift.

Its probably some oil blowing by the rings and being burned...they've probably changed their ring package to make power and its not affecting the power/performance.

LOL MRN just mentioned it mistakingly assuming he is smoking the RR

Sophia said...

thanks bevo for 20 info...

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's not really bias, it is just the struggle to define the storyline for the fans.

Cover the Chase and the non-Chaser fans get mad, cover the race and the top Chaser fans get mad.

This has been one of the most balanced telecasts of the season to this point.

Thanks for the info on the in-cars, I will try to get a pic of those antennas for the site.

We have done pic tours of the TV compound, the ESPN trucks, the ESPN infield pit center and the TNT infield stage.

Sophia said...

bevo said...

20 says pitting in 25 laps (they hope).

Vicky D said...

ri88girl - and the pit reporters have interviewed the guys who have been retired from the race and they aren't even in the chase.

Since david has 20 covered I'll go back to the Harvick channel :)

I have to agree I'm on ABC today and switching back to HotPass when I hear something of interest on the Pitcommand scanner. ABC/ESPN is on it a bit today.DJ and AP doing what seems to be PXP and doing it well.

Anonymous said...

and can i just say i'm really enjoying hearing the actual track sound today?

not sure what's happening here but this broadcast seems better than previous weeks. director and producer seem more on top of everything. i've given up on PxP but i am impressed with petree's analysis of troubles on #12: his ability to see the problem from where he's sitting speaks to his time as a crew chief. that's why we always need a former crew chief in the booth!

rich said...

24 pitting in 12 laps

The Loose Wheel said...

Tony tight. tight all the way through the corner.

They have had a rough last few weeks...its been months since they've had a really good car. kind of a let down for me as a fan =\

Anonymous said...

There are receive sites around the track. No need for heli anymore.

TexasRaceLady said...

Is Hell freezing over?

BobinNev said...

Even Hotpass is on the "Points Now" bandwagon! I can see bringing that up during the last race when it's close. Not early in a race!

stricklinfan82 said...

JD,

After watching Cup practice, qualifying, and the first 95 laps of this race on ESPN I'm left pondering one question....

Did the infamous "different producer" call in sick this weekend, or has something actually changed behind the scenes?

bevo said...

Just looking at the ABC box and flipping to the audio now and then on HotPass it looks like they're doing a better job today covering the rest of the field.

bevo said...

Meant ABC doing a better job.
HotPass great as usual.

Anonymous said...

this has got to be a different crew in the truck, or it's the B team auditioning for next year, and they get the job.

The Loose Wheel said...

20 coming in 2 or 3 more

soundsgood2me said...

BST has a ground based antenna system. There are antenna's at several locations that send the signal back to the truck.

ya' know what the broadcast today reminds me of so far? a race from the beginning of the season! we're not "all chasers, all the time", we're actually seeing mid-pack cars and hearing about other teams.

now if we could just reduce the use of those nasty in-car cameras when two cars are racing for position . . .

whoever's handling today so far is doing a solid job!

Dot said...

Figures we get good coverage at the end of the season.

The true test will be if they reset the field after these stops, now that the field is all scrambled up

Karen said...

Why did Biffle start 43rd? B/c of scraping the wall in Q'ing?

The Loose Wheel said...

I wish ESPN would use the ticker to show a "before pit stop" bar in times like this so you can at least make an educated guess on who did or did not have a good stop

The Loose Wheel said...

Biffle changed the transmission

Newracefan said...

Biff transmission change

Weird thing on Harvick's channel - interviewing the president of Shell. It's the first race he's ever gone to.

Anonymous said...

nrf: agreed! jd: has there been some change in the production truck you can share with us? this is significantly different than previous espn broadcasts!

The Loose Wheel said...

Speed was probably on biff's strategy, they pitted after the red flag so they had a little extra in the tank hoping to catch a caution

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah, his lap times are 7 tenths off the guys around him

TexasRaceLady said...

red, significantly better telecast.

i would love to know who is calling the shots in the race today...it is improved but after an entire season that STANK.

@Dot

I'm a big Marcos fan so I was doing some checking and as they currently are running (I know, that doesn't matter until the end) Speed would vault over R.Gordon for 34th and Marcos would only be about 10 points behind Gordon, having gained about 50 on him so far during the race. If that holds, he could still pass Gordon for 35th at Miami.

bevo said...

I don't understand the philosphy behind the single car shots. Do they think we can not comprehend oral information without a video guide? Is there no other racing on the track? Some type of agreeement between ESPN and sponsors to show a single car shot for x amount of time during the race? What. It's like watching paint dry!

My problem is I'm writing about the race or other related things while it's happening. I'm attached to my laptop.

In fact, I've missed most of the race reading this post and writing about things... who's leading??

So Carl is now 158 points back. If it finishes like that, isn't 158 more than the maximum that can be made up in a race?

If Jimmie clinches today or just needs to start Homestead, I think it would be great if he stops on lap 1 and just does a huge burnout. I'm sure a bunch of people wouldn't like it, but I think a spontaneous burnout would be hilarious.

To keep on topic, I'm impressed with what I've seen from ESPN today. The only thing that bothers me is I hear "Cousin Carl" nearly as often as that horrid Saved by Zero commercial.

Regarding pizza, me 2. I don't normally have it -- quad bypass survivor, 3rd anniversary last weekend -- so when I do, I enjoy myself.

I have been reading my NASCAR Illustrated rather conspicuously on public transit and at Starbucks, using it as bait to see if anyone else was a fan, but I'm fishing in the wrong ponds. J.D., I'll let you know if I try to put together a watching group.

I have wifi too.

The car sounds from the track sound great in my new system. Does anyone know how they get those sounds from the track? Is it from the cameras ?

The $300K for the FCC sponsorship is for multiple races and the head of the FCC is catching some "refuse" for using the money to sponsor a NASCAR vehicle.

Some folks don't realize the $$ value of the coverage that a sponsor can get on the race hood.

KENN: I like that idea! Reading your NASCAR mag conspicuously. LOL.

The longer I sit here, the more ticked off I am that we had to sit through months of terrible coverage when they could have been doing this all along. They're showing they're capable. So what's up with that?

Thanks, nrf.

Re your bs. most of us can hear if a car is off when the incar audio form the car you are riding with goes by. So the drivers, can hear it for sure.

Ditto to your PSPN comment...why torture us with PUTRID coverage all season only to pull a rabbit ouf of a hat NOW???????????

Course, there is always next week. Maybe the entire season director is sick and Mike Wells is filling in (from TNT)

Just because you hear it at home doesn't mean that the driver's can hear it in their car....

2fast,

There are microphones around the track that pic up all the car sounds. The sound crew does a good job over there.

I swear the 22 is dressed up like a retro hooters 7! Good thing I'm going to the opthomologist tomorrow, my eyes have been playing tricks all weekend.

The #22 is being sponsored by Bad Boy Mowers. That will be on the car this week and next.

CAT is gone for the remainder of the year

Sorry about the bad language, took a minute to take a phone call.

Time for Punch and company to bring this home with some excitement!

Anon, I would think it worked the same way as if you are driving down the highway and hear a putt putt coming up beside you, or perhaps a foreign car with a slightly different engin sound. They do have window nets after all.

if jimmie passed gordon high ( i didnt see the pass ) then he should have heard the car. if he passed him low, the exhaust is to the right side of the car so he probably didnt hear gordon. these guys also have earplugs and radios in their ears.

also, inside the car is somewhat loud as well...there is a chance he cant hear gordon's car...but if he passed him high i imagine he did. then again it may be slight enough at speed that he cant tell
