Sprint Cup Series Final Race On ABC From Homestead-Miami Speedway
The NASCAR on ESPN crew is at the end of a seventeen race Sprint Cup Series TV assignment. They began in July with the Brickyard in Indy and now find themselves in South Florida to crown a champion.
While there has been a relatively short string of races on the Cup side, this same ESPN crew has been working the Nationwide Series events since February. The coverage of the Nationwide race on Saturday showed a very tired Dr. Jerry Punch who could not muster even a moment of excitement during the event.
As the final three laps rolled by, it was Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree who once again jumped-in to add a description of what was actually happening on the track. It was Petree who said "two to go" as the cars flashed across the start-finish line. After the excitement of the Craftsman Trucks on Friday, this was tough to take.
That is the Sunday challenge for the NASCAR on ESPN team. Keep the energy and excitement high for this final time as two races unfold in front of the TV viewers. While drivers battle to lead and win the race, Jimmie Johnson will be battling to keep himself in the right position to win his third consecutive championship.
In the Saturday race, the long green flag runs resulted in limited exposure for Allen Bestwick and the Infield Pit Studio crew. Bestwick will start the day with NASCAR Countdown at 3PM with a 45 minute show. If long green flag runs are again the order of the day, his crew may be heard more than seen all race long.
ESPN has again expanded the infield staff by adding Ray Evernham to the mix. That puts him alongside of Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Bestwick has to manage three opinions and personalities in every segment now instead of two.
The pit road reporters were frustrated on Saturday. Only once were they allowed to do a reset of the field and it was much shorter than needed. Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro have lots of information and just needed some time to relay it to the audience.
ESPN has changed the racing philosophy and now interviews drivers who are out of the race even though they are not Chasers. The pit road crew has become more in-tune with speaking directly to the crew chiefs rather than relying on scanner chatter and what they observe to offer facts to the viewers.
Tim Brewer was another participant who could have just taken a nap once the Nationwide Series race started on Saturday. Fast laps and lots of action on this multi-groove track left little time for the Tech Center. Long green flag runs and few engine problems on Sunday may afford Brewer another long rest.
Just as ESPN's SportsCenter has grown from two hosts showing highlights to a seemingly endless crew of talking heads offering opinions, this network philosophy is being reflected in ESPN's NASCAR coverage. This race will have twelve announcers all trying to contribute to a fast-paced live sporting event with no scheduled time-outs or halftime. That equation is perhaps not the best.
Keys to watch will be when and how the Producer integrates the various announcers and the role that the infield plays in the overall program. Which pit reporters have Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards will also be important. Look for just how often ESPN offers "up to speed" segments where the field is reviewed.
On Saturday, ESPN often went to the in-race reporter or inserted a feature instead of resetting the field after a caution flag and pit stops. This left the TV viewers relying on the silently scrolling ticker at the top of the screen for any information on the vast majority of the field. It was fundamentally poor TV producing.
Pay attention to how often Punch resets the field after a caution or a commercial break. This is the final race and there are a wide variety of reasons teams are going to be racing. Driver championship, Top 35, Rookie Points, Manufacturer title and many other issues will all be playing out on the same track at the same time.
Homestead is once again making great pictures and sound. With no grandstands anywhere but the frontstretch, this track has great camera placement and offers fantastic aerial views. Tough to catch for the Director sometimes is the long pit access road. Pit road, however, is great for viewers and the race off is going to be exciting.
The final lap coverage is always tough as so many things are happening at the same time. Race winner vs. Chase winner might be a tough call. After the final lap, NASCAR has a script that the TV network follows in terms of race winner first and Chase winner second. Keep an eye out for how that shakes-out live.

mee toooo!!!! good job DR....
I have the leaderboard up on NASCAR.com because ESPN hasn't given us any kind of a field reset. Why should I think they would do something different than they have since they took over?
Plus, Edwards looks like he's going to lap the field again,
ri88girl,
Kansas is better the Journey. "Dont stop believing...."
10 ONLY that SUCKS
@ andrew, did you peek at the script?
The run of JPM over the last month is pretty impressive. Hopefully before the end of the race they will preview 09 a little bit and talk about teams carrying momentum into next year especially without offseason testing/preseason thunder.
The future of EGR, people. :p
So we got to 10th. What a shocker.
I wish they had a nascar version of guitar hero...that would be cool.
Nice radio on Aric.... ESPN does a great job with the radio's, how do they get that stuff??
dot, I did, and Almirola wasn't supposed to spin until Lap 154.
lap 70, looks like evernham's caution predictor was pretty good
Aric will get an earful by Brian France then.
Wait, i forgot. Mike Helton makes ALL the decisions.
Someone gamble with 2 tires early?

@JD,
All my fantasy teams are Wayward Son Racing.
LOL
Caught the first 50 laps on MRN heading home, amazing how much more information you get about the cars than you do on ESPN.
Interesting, JP's commentary didn't fit the picture. Carl's crew just carried on and JP says "yeah!"
someone needs to update that prescription i think.
Like ya JP...but your a wounded horse right now.
09 on lead lap, stayed out so 48 had clear pit out, he could have pitted with him would have gotten there about the same time 48 would have been leaving. Speed called this wonder if ESPN even noticed.
Infield out of commercial or in-race reporter?
I wanna see the crew cam already!!!
Doc actually called the spin, and he even sounded a tad excited, does he get the feed a few seconds before we do, or was he looking out the window?
I would really rather have a reset than the over the wall come on guys
Why does the changer do commentary?
if the guy worked for me and did that, id fire him. Anyone notice the guys on the really good pit crews never have crew cams?
A tie game ends in the NFL...interesting.
Tie for the a cup championship anyone?

nice job grap....they listened....awesome stuff!!!!
Do we know how Mikey got 2 laps down, and how Chad got one of his back?
I'm lost!
NICE call POLE!!!!
nrf I caught that yesterday on SPEED too.
it was right in front of Doc...he better have seen it. Bet DJ tapped him on the shoulder LOL.
I think Mikey had commitment cone issues, only because I heard spotter say something about 55 and grass but that is a guess, he was running bad before that
Just got home have I missed a really great broadcast so far?

Just got home have I missed a really great broadcast so far?
uhhh, no.
altho', i guess it depends on who your driver is. anyone other than the #99 and you're toast.
well at least they SEEM to be looking for racing
ESPN has focused on the 99 thus far.
Other drivers have a total of about 5 minutes airtime.
Haven't missed much. Carl doing what he has to, but so is JJ
didn't we just come out of commercial or do i imagine those?
@ vicki d, is this you first race on ESPN, lol. No you haven't.
Great moments in broadcasting- Larry Mc pronouncing Keselowski on the JJ channel :)
I think its been a good broadcast considering its a championship run, and 99 is winning the race. They are showing some mid-pack stuff. Im cool with it.
The Ragan kid coming...will he get a mention?
probably not.
Wow, they actually gave him a shoutout.
looks like after a rocky start they are trying to get their feet back under them.
Edwards probably has the dominant car so they are going to have to find racing instead of hoping it finds the camera.
Gee, David Ragan got airtime!
I wonder when they decide to turn the lights on? The ones at LMS take a while to warm-up.
I cringe as I say this, but it seems to me that Brad has been doing a lot more of the rundown drivers positions and strategies talk like a pit reporter or dare I say PXP. They wouldn't concider sending him to school in the off season and trying him in the booth next year? In Nationwide maybe...
countdown to debris caution.....
starting to see alot of single file racing in the top 10 in those rare glimpses of more than 2 cars in a camera shot.
this entire conversation would be great on nascar now, during the race, not so much. what's going on with top 35? rookie points? the actual race?
They are on already JD. you can see the reflections off the 48.
@david--yup...we'll all contribute to the script writing :).
They're just taking us through their stop. As long as they're not swearing or saying something inappropriate when they miss I don't see it as a biggie. It might be a good question if JD has a way of contacting DJC and we can do a Q&A with him. But they might do that mentally or verbally anyway. I do that with my dance and workouts, have the dance moves going through my head as I'm doing the routine.
GREAT! Now y'all have that Wayward Son song stuck in my head :p
again...paint drying
Rookie points are a non-story since Hornish missed the race. Regan Smith can get it with a solid run.
Top 35...still early to discuss as well.
Time for a rundown though.
Thank you JD.
I doubt this is going down to the wire. Really? It's not the truck race.
Battle for 3rd. Commercial break.
Wonder if we'll get a replay?
david,
We have been here all season and we know the NASCAR storylines my friend.
All of our readers can comment on any TV issue in this forum OK?
JD
np sounds, sorry for the hassle.
all that shot does is make me want to push it in already!
44 trying to pass 29 for 3rd and we go to commercial
top 35....it almost like someone is reading this forum;)
David, I heard on the Speed Raceday that the rookie points are voted on by Nascar - it's not just points based on position at the end of the season. They didn't say WHO in Nascar voted, but wanna bet Hornish gets it?
BTW, wanted to say it's been fun being with you all this season during the races. JD, thanks.
Not watching the race, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned that this will be the first time in the history of the sport that not a single ROY driver will score a Top Ten. Sent that lil tidbit to Jayski, but to no avail
Hey JD, no blimp yet..... Is it a sponsorship thing.?
Only cars in the 99's zipcode this late in a run are the 44 and 20.
should be interesting if they bunch up with a caution.
10 or so laps from more green flag stops?
Wouldn't all these lovely conversations about who is going where be better for NN. How about a full field recap & tell us about passing on the track?
I know its happening cuz of Fox trax & MRN!
Tell the story on the track about the race in progress.
sounds,
The wind was howling here earlier, but I really have no clue.
The race is really suffering because the aerial shots from the track are great.
I am going to miss them after dark for sure.
Rookie points are always a mess to determine. I remember back in 2000 when Kenseth and Jr took it to the wire. Jr won more races but Kenseth got the nod.
Phat. Regan won Talladega remember =p
Commercial again?!
What in the world is with this? I guess its prepping for stops?
I find it very interesting that ESPN has not mentioned one word about the 01 and 15 leaving as part of the DEI-Ganassi merger, as it relates to the top 35 in owner's points.
Last year when DEI and Ginn merged NASCAR ruled they could not sell off the #13 car's owner points to get down to the 4-team limit, so those points simply went away and 36th bumped up to 35th.
IF (and yes that's a major if) NASCAR is consistent, the 7, 84, and 47 should all be safe. The only battle left should be whether or not A.J. Allmendinger earns enough points for the 10 to pass the 77 for 37th.
Even if ESPN isn't sure if NASCAR would change their stance on the subject, it's at least worth reporting as part of the discussion.
@ phathead
ROY? not smart enough could you enlighten me? thanks
Does anyone else feel that the commercials are coming much closer together than normal?
Maybe they're cramming them in so we get some no-commercial time at the end.
I know --- I'm wishing on a star. *sigh*
Shannon did a good job talking about Harvick there. That's the kind of information they should provide when they do a rundown, not stuff about what happened during the week with the team or human interest stories.

I mentioned this as the race went green. guess its not important.
Just like most races this year with the COT, it won't get exciting until the final 50 or so laps.
stricklinfan,
I really do think it is too many cooks in the kitchen. The pre-race was a repeat of a lot of the 10AM NASCAR Now content (thanks readers) and really missed a lot of stories. Bestwick seemed almost sad.
In the race, we have heard DJ several times try to get the Producer and Director to go to what he wants to talk about and it has not happened.
As lots of readers have said, this is just lowest common denominator TV right now. It's a shame.
JD
ROY == Rookie of Year
How do they get all those radio's? they can't listen to them all at once>>>
Well aside from Regan :P
I went through all prior ROY candidates since they started giving out the award and there's always been at least 1 Top Ten by a contender.
@trl thanks, brain on pause due to lack of stimulation...oh look its the 99 car!
linal,
They all get recorded and the Associate Producers screen the content and turn it right around for air. It's a nice tool when used right.
JD
texasracelady I noticed the same from early on ,wouldn't that be nice to get them out of the way now so we could focus on the race later.Yeah right, we know better then that.
Gave the crews the extra man
Aha! the culprit has been unmaksed...its the Associate producer!....maybe not
Need a big reset here at halfway.
I want to see the decals on Smoke's car now that they've mentioned it.
Something I like that is done on the radio and unfortunately isn't done on TV is having someone come in the booth as a guest. In this, the final race of the season a Brian France or Mike Helton should drop in and discuss this season in summary and the outlook for 2009. Given the bleak outlook for at least 15 teams heading into speedweeks it would be good to be addressed. Also, not everyone has SPEED so not everyone could hear from Brian this morning (even though not much was said)
Can't the pit reporters give information on more than one driver???
karen,
Wendy showed it up close including the one inside the cockpit if you taped RaceDay.
wow, you could really see how dark it actually is in that pit road stop shot. ...
Karen, if you go to NASCAR.com click on the smoke picture, or find that story and they show a decal representing the Daytona win in a picture inside the story.
Hey all,
Starting on Tuesday of this week we are going to be selecting the "best of" NASCAR TV for 2008.
The topics for this week are listed on the right side of the main page under the TV listings.
Hopefully, this will be fun.
JD
David a guest during a race, please no, we are having enough problems with no PXP after the race a totally different story
david-
I couldn't disagree more about guests in the booth. Put that in the pre or post race, not the race itself.
JD and David,
Thanks. I did tape RaceDay and will check out nascar.com.
@ David - heaven forbid! No guests they do not need another reason to not show the race on the track!!
It just sounds awkward when they come back from commercial with the studio guys
looks like it's getting dark...
Will we see the debris?
No one says they would have to take away from showing the action. Done appropriately, I wouldn't see the problem doing it on occasion. Not every week though.
I imagine since there is no faith ESPN can show a race alone well week in and week out, asking for anything more is a stretch =p
LOL, dot, the prop guy forgot to plant it.
Radio reports, the weather is getting chilly. Jackets are out.
Should indicate track is getting ready for a major transition which means adjustments, comers and goers
JD is there something wrong with the web site? Every 10 minutes i cant make a post. Just letting you know
I really like the three box and long pitroad shot it works well.
Jr taking 2
I'm actually pleasantly surprised JP is talking about non-chase driver Reut even though he's in the top 5 racing order.
More then a feeling, High School it is
Did they ever show the debris?
kenny,
Take a moment and register for a blue Google nick and you will be able to remain in the comments section when it is closed to everyone else. Thanks.
JD
Looks like the 17 is loose, how can they fix that?
@ Andrew, no because there isn't any.

I agree JD. I've beaten the "simpler is better" drum here for 2 years now. As I've said many times, in my opinion Speed's simple approach to covering the Truck Series produces the best race broadcasts. And in my opinion the Fox broadcasts are much better on Monday rainouts when there is no "Hollywood Hotel" and the best Nationwide broadcasts on ESPN have been the ones without the pit studio, fancy video packages, and "scripts".
As I've also said many times I've never quite understood the logic of spending tons of money on these fancy pit studios / spinning sets, Tech Centers, gimmicks like Draft Tracks, and extra talking heads that really aren't necessary.
Annon:
MRN just interviewed Truex and he is reporting the track is actually getting slicker.
An exact adjustment with this new car and a track moving towards a loose characteristic is rough to guess.
if they have a spring rubber in it, they can take one out of the right rear, or perhaps adjust wedge/trackbar.
interesting to see how they reset with guys trying 2 tire stops.
i anticipate a restart accident
dot - What a surprise. Not. Silly NASCAR.
Oh, well, at least the restart should be good.
Is it a camber problem on the 17?
Vickers alot of damage on that left front. no discussing it?
what junior actually said was that he's never had a good two tire stop and that he was F@!*en stupid about them. Not real TV friendly;)
Told ya Vickers had alot of damage...there's what happened.
Vickers, Kvapil, and Kurt Busch got together, it seems? But we only talk about one of them. Rargh.
So, they missed the whole pit road deal?
JD - Thanks for all your hard work this season. Are you seeing delete keys every where you look today? ;)
Yup. When they were talking about the top 35 they went to BV and I saw the left front had donuts on it and the fender was really wrinkled and wondered what had happened. That answered that.
Thats not good when you miss 3 cars getting together right in front of you.
JD--I look forward to the Tuesday column :)
@david--if they could prove they could show us the action *on* the track during the season then I might say "yes" to a guest. But somehow they seem to think showing tight shots of cars doing nothing, bumper cams & full screen driver pre-taped interviews during green flag runs are acceptable.
If they'd get all the cameras off of just Carl, maybe they would catch this stuff in the pits.
The Producer in charge of the pits is not having a good day to say the least
gymmie--I understand. I figured that was the case a few posts ago.
Hard to have faith ESPN could accomplish that when they can't get fundamentals down.
Did they ever recap who did what on stops?
I take everytnng in life as an experience. These two seasons have been one of the best media experiences I have ever had.
To think that this little blog and the readers could become a presence in the NASCAR TV scene is amazing.
Last week Steve Byrnes asked me who stricklinfan was! I told you that what you say is a big deal to lots of TV folks.
JD
Obviously, a camera caught it. They just didn't choose to show it until Kurt hit the wall.
OK reset the field since we have no idea who actually pitted
they miss stuff on pit road, and one of the most annoying thing they do is not follow up when we at home can see a car is slowing on the track, or is doing something else squirelly. If I can see it and ask why so can they sheesh!
No - no recap David - but they got the Crew Chief challenge promo in
What in the world would they do if Carl was to blow his engine and drop out of the race?
We'd probably hear those 'crickets' chirping.
My goodness Allmendinger is having a great run! Would love to know what he's saying.
I don't think JP should be doing promos for upcoming shows - he sounds like he's reading a dictionary.
Looks like Kurt's been to Bristol
88 came back in, address the power steering failure?
Got a Ned Jarrett clip on the Johnson channel... ahh the good old days of coverage :)
I think Dinger is on 2 tires or stayed out. They ran low 20's at the start.
if they did those full screen replays in live action instead of slow motion, it wouldn't be such a deterent.
@david- he figured that he lost all those spots may as well come back and get 4. Once again it takes Foxtrax and scanner to get the whole story.....
@david--:)...didn't mean to overstep there.
@strcklinfan--w00t!
JD,
Byrnes does a great segment with Buddy Baker Thursday nights on Sirius.
I'm jealous of him asking about stricklinfan... does Pemberton ever ask about me??? :)
bevo, those where truly the good old days , coverage and racing.
np gym. i see your guy's point.
Someone got the memo about showing battles!
Byrnes does Late Shift on Thursdays?
They had Rick Benjamin doing it for a long while.
HUSH SHANNON! Trouble?! Where?!
@David 5:51 - from your keyboard to TPTB ears ( & they listen) ;)
Shut her up rule number ONE of pit reporting shut up if there is something on the track unforgivable
Darn poor Marcos, I know it may be a moot point but am really afraid RCR can get their hands on one of the spots because of the engine program affiliation
Someone tried doing their job and calling it. Shannon went on for a good 5-8 seconds after the initial call. Totally unforgivable.
anon 5:56 - bitter much?
Well, this will certainly shake things up in the field. Several 2-tire stops, it looked like.
I thought I heard someone say "trouble" and she just kept talking.
@ texasracelady - You did. Shannon was being silly again.
And we keep talking about TS when obviously someone in the background (DJ, I think) has said trouble. Just when I was gonna compliment them for actually showing some racing back in the pack. Or maybe it wasn't back in the pack. I have no idea where anyone is because they never reset the field!
Dale Dale Dale, we could tell you were watching the track and not your monitor;)
foxtrax on for the lap count but way off for the position had the 48 22nd and he's really 15th. They really need to reset the field now, I'm clueless
NRF. Stricklin fan mentioned it earlier about what happened with DEI and Ginn last year and if NASCAR is consistent, RCR wont be able to.
The organization can only have their hands on 4 cars (except roush) and to sell points they are essentially becoming a part of the team that acquires the points. Therefore Teresa would be listed as the owner on 5 or 6 cars (if they sell both) and NASCAR won't let that fly.
I imagine they will tell them to forefit the points but it may become a moot point because we may go to Daytona without a full field if people don't find sponsorship soon.
Zip just said thank god its the last frickin race of the year I don't believe this. Something went wrong on pit stop I guess.
espn won't tell us
JD - see you are having to use your delete button a lot today too.
bevo,
I think Rutledge asked about you, does that count?
I am a soft touch and I opened the door up to everyone again. Silly me.
@ David & TRL, I agree. Doesn't someone tell the reporters to shut up when someone says trouble? Whose job is that?
I wish the booth would watch the track instead of the monitors.
@newracefan - you need to give racetrax about 60 seconds after pit stops, it takes a while to reset. JJ in p14 now.
i doubt im regular enough to get any fans in the tv world =p
Race is moving at a very fast pace...we'll have quite the post race hopefully
Gee thanks JD :)
david- he does two segments at the end of the show with them, Benjamin is still the co-host
David if they don't have a full field, then what's the point of racing the twin 125's (or whatever it'll be called next year).
Have we heard why Jeff Burton is so far back? What problems is he having? Where is the pit reporter and why aren't they doing their job?
vicky - they'll still run the Gatorade Duel (or Twin 125s/150s as they used to be called); it's how they set the field, after all.
vicky. Whats been the point since they introduced the top 35?
I love Speedweeks. I wish it was a full 2 weeks again.
I wish it meant something.
But my top 35 rant will come another time. if ya wanna talk sometime ill give ya my views on what they should do to get the field sizes back up for next season.
Well, now we hear about him.
JoJaye, did you ever hear why Zippy was so upset? Any explanation from anyone?
When? Today or at Phoenix?
PIR was because of the wreck. Tony got snippy on the radio and Zippy gave it right back to him. Its the relationship driver and crew cheif has sometimes =)
@ TRL, the reporters are doing their jobs. They just wait until someone yells trouble before they talk.
Tracy said...

----
Yup had to restart MRN window - really bad pit stop / lost many positions
Today, David. Jojaye said Zippy was happy this was the last f***in race.
Thanks, Jojaye
David, what I was getting at is if Nascar doesn't have a full field at Daytona, how many people will show up for the twin races. That would be funny, but Nascar would "encourage" teams to show up for it. Grand Am racing is sounding better and better for next year.
Ah. Long season grind. Addington said it the other day on SIRIUS, if your running well you love another race, if you aren't doing so hot you just want it to end.
They've had a bunch of miscues in the chase, its taking its toll a bit. They are calm on the radio now.
=)
Bumper cam on restart?!
Bad call.
@ Tracy - NP -my puters need rest after this fiasco of race "coverage".
twin races set your starting spot, so everyone who wants to run will run. your right though. you'd have a mess of late entries and you will have guys go home but there may only be 30-36 legit cars with the rest just being there for the start and park money.
back to the tv...it'll be a fun discussion later on though
I fell asleep about 70 laps in and just woke up. Is it still the Jimmie and Carl show or are they showing the race?
alex. its gotten better. we are seeing action since carl's had a blazing fast car and jj has just been a 15th place car.
Pit strategy has things jumbled up though.
wah!!! Daddy..I lost internet fora couple hours and have not been watching the race due to going to phone store to replace modem...miss anything??LOL
I heard Kurt B hit the wall on the radio in the car...now I am lost
how much info am i supposed to digest here? ESPN is ticker happy -the allstate ticker with two colors for in the chase, the interval ticker which switches to the 'points as they run' and the race info ticker, the nfl ticker on the bottom and if they talk about a racer, his race stats on top. really espn?!
Thanks David.
Those in-car cameras still bug me. IMO they're only useful to watch if a driver is having trouble keeping his window net up.
CAUTION = ESPN commercial
Caution out. Is it me or have we not seen Christy and Chevy?
Jr. not to happy with Gilliland
Debris?
I had to step away and missed it.
