What a weekend this has been for ESPN where NASCAR is concerned. Practice coverage on Friday consisted of lots of talking and very little content. Saturday's qualifying was the victim of a live college baseball game running long, so lots of the cars were dropped from the coverage so ESPN2 could hit live golf on time at 5PM.
Now, the NASCAR on ESPN team has to re-group and get things back together for a live race from Nashville. This is one of those unique concrete tracks that is very different from the traditional NASCAR surfaces that this series sees regularly.
Allen Bestwick will lead Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty on the air at 7PM with the pre-race show from the Infield Pit Studio. Tim Brewer will also be on-hand from the Tech Garage.
Once the pre-race is over, Wallace will be going up to the booth and joining Dr. Jerry Punch and Andy Petree to call the race. Dale Jarrett has the weekend off. Down on pit road will be Dave Burns, Shannon Spake and Jamie Little.
Both Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch are down from Pocono for this race. Look for the normal struggles of the Nationwide regulars to keep up with the big boys. A consistent story on these stand-alone weekends will be how many teams start the race and then pull directly into the garage before the first pit stop for fuel.
Although the fuel is free, the tires are not. Teams at the back of the pack who have no intention of actually racing are going to save every dollar possible. TDP will be keeping track of the start and park teams in our live blog.
The track is easy to cover for TV, makes great pictures with the light surface and offers good racing. This part of the coverage should be fun to watch.

That was the most shocking thing I have seen watching NASCAR.

When you feed the ego and constantly pump someone up as a god. Giving constant false comparisons to great drivers. Covering the whole race as he being the race and the rest are just extras on the set. He can say, act, do whatever he like. He's at the point of the stars that think they can do whatever, ask for whatever, and get away with it.
Is anyone really surprised anymore? Plus with all the hate. It gets to the point of funny. I'm sure we've all had someone that disliked us to the point where it makes yourself just laugh whenever they are negative to you. Only thing is Kyle's someone is a few million fans.
I switched over to VS at the checkered because once I heard 'everyone gets a piece' nothing good was going on after that.
Don't think it sells tickets. Pumping someone up to circus freak levels is not a way to sell tickets. At least they covered Brendan.
But I bet Shrub's PR person has had a cow.
JD- does he try to duck interviews tomorrow, or man up and apologize at every opportunity?
Maybe someone who knows Sam Bass' reputation will put Kyle in the wall tomorrow.
Then everyone can "get a piece" of his car!
I'm not buying any apologies from him - there's nothing he can say that will take away my disgust at his actions. Being that this is a family site, I can't say what I really feel, but am sure my feelings are shared by everyone who loves racing as much as I do.

he was sharing with the crew, the crew guys seemed okay with it, they were the winning team after all and once he took the checkered flag it was the team's property...
im sure the folks at gibson, nashville ss, and sam bass himself are probably quite irked and upset over it but this is not blasphemy or worthy of a suspension or ANY kind of sanction.
brad keslowski can chuck his trophy to the crew in talladega and luckily someone caught it...had they not what would you guys be saying then?
im sure in hindsight kyle will be wishing he did that off camera and probably off the track property.
i was shocked he did it, but im not up in arms over it. its different thats for sure. i wouldnt have done that if i was in his shoes then again if he thought like me he probably wouldnt be the youngest driver in NW series history to 25 career wins, and 51 wins overall in NASCAR's top 3 divisions.
im not saying what he did was totally justified, but i wasnt mortified over it either is all im trying to say to answer JD's question if everyone shared his sentiment

If he apologizes, it better be a full-fledged one. Not one of these, "IF anyone was offended by my actions, I'm sorry" apologies where it's only directed at people who were offended by what happened.

Do you think Kyle would have pulled this stunt if Coach Gibbs were at the track? I don't think so! It was disrespectful to his owner as well as to the artist, the sponsor, the track, and the series. And I hope the media give him holy hell over it.
Why would Sam be cool with this? Unless it wasn't the real one. The spin will be it was a replica and the real one is just fine.
That's probably what'll happen when all is said and done. It'll be put out there that Kyle got everyone's ok before the race....that way NASCAR doesn't have to deal with it. By the time the story settles down, we'll probably be told it was Sam Bass' idea.
Well, we will know more tomorrow for sure. The fact that no one on the ESPN team reacted to this and just let him get away with it is disgusting. Period.

I have had an acoustic guitar for YEARS (can't play much now due to arthritis but I digress :( )It's an Alvarez. I just found out 8 years ago it was handmade by Yairi himself (has signature and number inside!)
I thought that was just a model number but a professional musician enlightened me. I would not want somebody to BREAK THAT. How can somebody who worked on something agree to have this done..Unless he was prepared for it and compensated for it.

Just because it's a guitar doesn't mean it's not a work of art. Just like a Monet painting or a sculpture by Rodin, I think the creator wouldn't be very happy with it being smashed on the ground and just about ruined.
Why would Ratcliff (CC) get one? Aren't there 2 made? One for the owner and one for the driver.

Childish, immature, vile, disrespectful, stupid, any other word you can throw to support the Anti-Kyle movement may be justified or whatever, fact is this: He won the race, it is HIS trophy and the TEAM's trophy. Everyone will go home with a piece and treasure it that belonged to that team. For me that is what is important looking at this as a RACER mentality. Not from a politically correct media spin, present the good image type of view.
In the press it was stupid. But honestly, I can't say any guy other then the guys on a championship team, who all go a piece of a trophy from ANY race. Thats something that will be special to them.
People who have raced and been to the track im sure will have different views on this but those guys on his team have something to remember this race by which I think in that respect, the spirit of what he tried to do, NOT the action of what he did, was a neat gesture. unfortunatly in true Kyle Busch fashion, it backfired. They were better off going back to the shop, breaking out the band saw and going that route...to which none of you would have heard a peep and it would have been the coolest thing for each and every person on that #18 Nationwide team.
Remember, Kyle may be dominating, but alot of this is the effort of that team putting flawless stops and flawless race cars on the track.
This is a lost battle or war in the media but anyone who expects NASCAR to react...they won't. At least not publicly nor should they in my eyes.
Now with that, that is how i view it. If I was a member on that team. unfortunately, thats how I view alot of these things because thats where Id like to be at some point in life...it was stupid for it to happen in the eyes of a camera but the thought to me was pretty cool.
I guess thats what im trying to defend...the thought of what he was trying to do. not the action of smashing it. Im sure there will be tons of talk and interviews about it tomorrow and for the rest of the week.
And that's the problem when PR starts to put out a fuse....so many different stories start coming out.
The clock comparisons don't maqke any sense. There is a long history of musicians smashing guitars and other instruments at the end of shows (for my thoughts on that google John Hiatt and Perfectly Good Guitar) but I'm unfamiliar with any history of clock smashing. I don't really like what he did, but but given what Hendrix, Townsend, Bonham, and many other musical greats did to instrumentso n a regular basis I'd have to give a shoulder shrug rather than the "Oh my God, he just killed ababy" reaction that it is getting.
Vicki, saying "just about being ruined" is an understatement. There's no way to fix it now. And you are absolutely right about how artists feel about their creations. I'm still livid - and it will probably last into tomorrow where I will boo as loudly as possible whenever I see or hear Kyle!

Sam, I would imagine, due to fires and various mishaps that CAN occur and have with trophy's, IE Ernie Irvan's house burning down years ago with all his racing trophies inside, has a template available and the trophy either has or can, or will be replicated.

Rock stars smash work horse guitars. (1) kyle bush is not a rock star no matter what he tells himself in the mirror every morning and (2) this particular guitar was meant as a work of art with many many man hours going into it.
If Kyle wants to act like a rock star, let's give him a chicken and he can do his rock star rendition with that!

ROCK STAR Kyle AIN't and for the record, I always thought that was lame when musicians did that, too. SO WHAT if they could afford it.

Kyle could've discreetly taken this to the shop and cut it up in small pieces for ALL to share the trophy. Frankly I wish if that had happened I did not hear about it..but this "IN YOUR FACE WWE" effort.. color me CANT STAND VYLE even moreso.
Sharing the guitar would mean crew members who play would take it home and bring it back for the next guy to play it.

We need to flood the sponsor with complaints so that they'll know this wasn't accepted by most of the fans.

RACER meaning as a crew guy who just busted 60 hours of his week working on that race car for JGR, spending that time away from family and busting my tail to make sure that car went out there and dominated like it did, to get a piece of what is a special trophy has to mean something to the guys on the crew. Anyone can give their trophy to a single individual or buy a bunch of replicas, but taking the genuine artifact and breaking it so everyone has something to remember that race by? thats intense. and for the crew guys, i think it actually means alot to them.
maybe someone should interview some of the guys on that team and ask THEIR thoughts about it at some point since we wont hear the end of how Kyle should have NEVER EVER done that.

I'm not thinking about the crew - I'm thinking about the creator! You know, the person who spent all those hours creating that trophy, only to see it smashed in an instant. No time for pictures with the winner, no compliments from the race winner on how special that trophy was. Just take the darned thing and smash it.

You obviously don't get that, but I think most adults will understand why doing so is immature and stupid.
It's a matter of sportsmanship.....a team wins the World Series, they don't smash the trophy....someone wins the French Open tomorrow, they don't smash the trophy....the Lombardi trophy doesn't get smashed. Yet, to the casual observer, NASCAR has some redneck driver smashing the trophy he won. Right up there with the MTV Awards and WWE wrestling, when a champion throws his belt into a garbage can.

@David--why does it matter *what* the crew guys thought. If they thought it was cool so should we? I don't think so! They're going to do the PR spin and support their driver. Even if they were personally sickened by it they're not going to say so, at least publicly. You're fighting a losing battle here. 99% of this blog is sickened by the actions taken tonight and regardless of what you say nothing is going to change. We've read the spin that Twitterverse has put out there and we're not buying it.

Respect is a word that is viewed differently by younger people than older folks.
Many of us who have been around racing for a long time remember other drivers and how incredibly special this trophy was to them.
Those of you who are younger have a different perspective and that is normal. Maybe it was cool to do, maybe it was not a big deal, maybe they talked about it in advance...
We have different views on this site from all kinds of folks. The driver who won this trophy last season kept it in his hands on the plane ride home even when he fell asleep.
Just another moment in NASCAR history that we will be talking about for a long time.

This is not a hate Kyle matter for me. I have no artistic talent whatsoever. But I know and appreciate something beautiful that another artist works hard to create. What I saw tonight was the wanton destruction of something beautiful, from both a musical and a visual viewpoint.

I wonder if the JGR twitter page is blown up. You no longer can see others tweets to them just their responses. Poor Bryan he's going to be busy sorting through them all!
What this shows me is that Kyle has no respect for the Series he competes in. It doesn't matter what race he wins, what the trophy is, what the points are, his only interest is how many wins he can add to his "legend." That's a fine way to be in Cup (or whatever your primary series is), but not the Nationwide series, where 42 other drivers would treasure that trophy and that win.
I said that would be my last comment, but I found something! This is from the AP....

I mean I see both sides JD. But at the end of the day if some of the "rumors" are accurate that Sam Bass and others knew of what could have happened, then I don't see what the uproar is all about. Everyone is wanting to speak for all the parties involved, myself included Im sure, but no one really knows how anyone really feels about it except for how they feel.
I hope Sam makes a statement and I hope its the truth. If people really are that rubbed the wrong way on Kyle inside the sport, I would hope they would take it upon themselves to take a stance, Sam Bass is a very respected person and if he is upset about this, everyone will know it. Vice Versa is true. It doesnt justify or shouldnt make this okay, because like anything, nothing is for everyone. For me its a shrug off because I dont buy for a minute that it was the only guitar there, or in existence for that event. So one of a kind stretches things when people call it that.
Still, senseless act that probably should have been more thought through by Kyle, I'll give EVERYONE that point. But I dont consider it a mortal sin in my book. Just my 2 cents about it.

This has nothing to do with "hating Kyle Busch", he is a very talented race car driver, perhaps the most talented driver in the three touring classes at the moment.
However, his actions harm racing. NASCAR racing specifically and stock car racing generally.
Some younger people may see this as "cool" but the reaction of adults generally is revulsion.
The nation is departing from civility. Only a civil population can remain free and self governed. This is also true of a sport. A sport where 200 MPH cars and lack of self control and civility will bring and end to something many of us care a great deal about.
Mr. Busch doubtlessly has issues that drive such aberrant behavior. Most of us hope he can be saved from himself before he harms himself, others or the sport. He is a fabulous talent, a prodigy, but at this point racing would be better of without him.

Anti or Pro is not relevant to the current conversion. This is more about actions and how they are viewed. Those who dislike kyle may racket up their view a few levels because of it. Many of the people upset tonight do not appear to be anti shrub, just sickened by the notion of a highly regarded trophy was ruined.

@ Mr D - According to Nascar.com, the first one was awarded in 2002, so I wouldn't say there is a terribly long tradition of anything with these trophys. I never used "tradition" to describe musicians (mis)treatment of their instruments anyway.
At the end of the day, a trophy is an object. This one was cooler than most, and I'd love to have a Les Paul custom painted or otherwise, but Kyle won and it is his to do with as he pleases. I really doubt he lost any fans tonight.

I guess this is a reminder to us that he is 24 yrs old....it's just he acts like he's 10. I just don't think a 24 yr old who acts like he's 10 will ever win a title at the Cup level.
I am not 'hating on Kyle', but I am hating his actions. And Sam Bass, bless his talented soul, has made his business in the NASCAR world, having his gallery right across the street from Lowe's Motor Speedway. I am not saying he is a cop-out, but PERHAPS he knows what what boat to rock.
For me its a shrug off because I dont buy for a minute that it was the only guitar there, or in existence for that event. So one of a kind stretches things when people call it that.

Now if SDDD would have smashed JP in Victory Lane for bad race calling, the comments would have been way different. We'd all be SDDD fans.

Personally, I thought that was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and I'm both a fan of Sam Bass and not a fan of Kyle Busch. I've been wanting someone to do that for years.
If you use a google (blogger) log in just go to sign in and forgot password. Just did that when I remembered I had a google.
The other openid ones 'should' have a forgot password option.
I, for one, am not going to come on here and complain about Kyle Busch's latest stunt, because if I did that I would be giving Kyle exactly what he wants - attention.
In my opinion the best way to handle a child that's acting up just for the sake of getting attention is to ignore him. As long as the entire grandstand is booing him, as long as TV-themed blog entries have subtitles like "Come Comment on Kyle Busch's Actions", as long as the fans on the Internet are calling him names, as long as every TV personality not named Darrell Waltrip is criticizing him on the air, as long as his press conference soundbites are all over NASCAR TV during the week, and as long as the TV cameras are fixated on him storming to the garage area after finishing 25th we're playing right into his hands and giving him what he wants.
From this point forward I'm just going to resist the temptation to bash him on the 'net, I'm going to quietly root against him when I'm watching on TV, and I'm going to sit in silence when I'm in the grandstands and he walks/drives by, and I hope others will choose to start doing the same.
Stricklin, if I ever do something significant in my life, please write my book...
@dot, that wasn't David hiding behind an anon. I was the poster who has a tag but can't remember the password. My whole point was this was supposed to be about television coverage but has degenerated into any other forum you would find about nascar "this is how he should do it, this is how they should do it, my favorite is better, yours sucks" in a personal way, nothing to do with the coverage other than the fact that they let you see him do it on camera.

I have the feeling that whether you thought what Kyle did was cool is based on your age. My guess is the 20-somethings and younger will think it's cool, but those of us older will think what he did was immature.
I would love to know what Joe Gibbs thinks about this. Personally, what he did was totally stupid and a kick in the teeth to the race organizers, the makers of Gibson guitars and to Sam Bass. Mr Bass is too high class to say anything, but I know, as an artist myself, if someone destroyed any of my works, I'd be massively upset.
Something needs to be done to Kyle, and soon. The "he's just young" defense doesn't work anymore. He's not young and he needs to be taken to the woodshed and given a little lesson. While I'm not a Joey Logano fan, that young man has more class and maturity in his pinky at age 19 than KB has in his entire body. Low class and stupid are KB's calling card.
On topic though, VERY disappointed ESPN didnt do a better job covering the NW regulars. Its hard when you focus your pre-race and hype up the regulars, then blow them off for the only 2 Cup guys in the field. Morgan Shepherd had a great run going but was only mentioned twice. once on track and once after he ran out of fuel. Kenny Wallace, mentioned a tad bit more but his story wasn't followed up on very well after running out. That was a major hole I saw tonight. When something happened to someone running up front it was like they fell off the face of the Earth. Not a peep was heard from them ever again.
Rough night to cover a one sided, not thrilling type race, but JP made it worse on us all as was stated before. Jamie Little, I had hoped would develop in her role, sadly I fear that will not happen. Shannon has potential, but I fear Jamie's continued struggles put Shannon on an equally hot seat as well when you consider the options they could have patrolling that pit road.
Glad they got Brendan, but should have gotten a word from Marc Davis as well.
Missed the Wimmer fire...just wow to that.
Lots of holes that need to be filled if Kentucky will even be close to watchable.

Did not like today's coverage of the race - and am still po'd at the qualifying snafu. Am hoping it's not the way the rest of the season will go, but then I remember last year and ESPN let me down then too. Time to start writing letters again!
David, don't mention "holes" please - reminds me of Digger and I'm oh so happy to be rid of that character! Would set a trap for him if I thought it would work!

I presume the trophy goes to the driver and, if so, KB had every right to do whatever he wanted with the trophy, but to me his actions seem immature and disrespectful, just like flouncing off when the race doesn't go his way - and destroying a one of a kind item seems very wasteful to me. I wonder how much he could have raised by auctioning the guitar off for some worthy charity. The perfect revenge is that he will most probably remember his actions far longer than anyone else - and in the future when he walks past his trophies he'll always know one is missing or not genuine. But, if he's real lucky, tonight's indiscretion will be the worst mistake he ever makes.

That's the whole problem. No coverage of the NW regulars. It's all CUP drivers (all two of them this week) all the time. This is just wrong. I don't have a favorite NW driver but I hate that none of them get any coverage from the booth. That is unless they crash, run out of gas, etc. And why isn't Darnell in the 6 car every week? How is he supposed to get better if he has to share the ride with a CUP driver?
As I posted earlier, Little has to go. She is bad. I cringe when I see her. If I were a driver I would run the second I saw her.
No wonder there are so many naked cars in the NW series. I know I wouldn't pay not to be mentioned. This is a serious problem NASCAR really needs to address. A rule change is in order. No running for a Championship unless you happen to own and drive the car a la Kevin Harvick.
And, to mention SDDD again, his shenanigans are going to turn off even more fans of NW racing. I'm surprised BSPN doesn't call it Kyle Busch and NW Series. Did you notice when the girl basketball game comml was on it was Jane Doe and the X team? Back in the day, the two Supremes were relegated to back up singers when their name changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes. Same thing.
I wish too that we would have seen the Wimmer fire. How did they not show that?

OK I'm back & just got caught up. Well it seems Tony Stewart was right ( according to my Hubby, a Jr fan) NASCAR is just like the WWE - Kyle smashed the guitar like Jared used to do. At least thats who he thinks smashed his guitars every so often ( we are old so its hard to remember junk now)
For you younger folks on the blog, the art of being gracious or polite is what you saw & have heard from Sam Bass tonight. It is a civility thats almost gone now.
As far as hating Kyle, no - just really quite fed up with every one under 40 claiming "I'm young, I'll grow up someday" Peter Pan nonsense!
Kyle is a professional racer. Kyle is/was a pitchman for products/charities/himself.
Respect/ reputations/ credibility takes time to earn & only a moment to tear down.
Kyles is in tatters.
And no sunglasses on 1/2 way apology will suffice. I have lost all respect for him, Joe Gibbs Racing, & if they do nothing NASCAR.
This was unacceptable,period.
