Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Pocono On TNT
There were over five hours of pre-race programming on ESPN2, SPEED and TNT. Now, it is time to race at Pocono. Bill Weber, Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach take center stage for the next six races.
TNT is throwing a ton or resources at these broadcasts. In addition to Larry McReynolds holding court in the infield with his trendy stage and cutway car, TNT is once again offering RaceBuddy.
This season, the Internet application will have new features. They include PRN's Jim Noble as a designated online reporter, embedded messaging from sources like Twitter and text messages directly to RaceBuddy users from pit road about the teams.
On the TV side, ESPN's original NASCAR Director Mike Wells returns this season for all six races. His directing style is evident right from the start of the first race. Wells uses wideshots and follows the best racing on the track regardless of where it is happening.
Petty has changed the tone of these telecasts with his good sense of humor and his ability to poke fun at himself. Down on pit road, local TV station sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak surfaces for these six races with her enthusiasm and nose for news. Veterans Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider and Matt Yocum round-out the pit reporter corps.
Weber has come a very long way since his NBC days and seemed to gel with Petty right from the start. He hosts a thirty minute pre-race show and then calls the race in his new role. Since fans have not seen him on NASCAR TV since last season, Weber is the wild card in this mix.
This post will serve to host your comments about the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Pocono. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.
Thanks for taking some time out of your weekend to stop by The Daly Planet.

No! Bunny is not my nickname, lol.
Yes, I called somebody a 'maroon' last week and got the whole Bugs Bunny chat going. it just fit the sentence for a pun, kind sorta but not exactly.
Wasn't Bunny the nik of a girlfriend on Sargent Carter's girlfriend on "Gomer Pyle"? Some old show had that name.
We still don't know what brought out the caution, do we?
Dot, I think Nascar didn't put the cone back out because they haven't had a yellow since Dexter Bean knocked it out of the way.
Looks like Jimmie Johnson is going to get the same penalty Kurt Busch got at Watkins Glen a few years ago. The red light came on as he was just about to cross pit entrance.
Chad not happy, Jimmie was already commited to pitting.
Blogger counter is off. Second page says 601-401 ?
The far camera on the triple split is in the wrong position and blocked by the stupid graphic.
@ dear Sophia, yes, Sgt Carter. Our ages are showing again.
Was that Chad Chad Chad who said pit pit pit?
@ VickyD, but cars could still pit before a yellow. Makes no sense.
hmm..now it says 401-406
i know it said 601 a minute ago

Some days, chicken --some days, feathers.
Burger King is just plain creepy these days.
@Sophia - No offense, but I think "Gomer Pyle" was before my time. Plus, I grew up in Quebec and I doubt "Gomer Pyle" was ever translated to French. "Gilligan's Island" was though. :)
@dot: i don't think officials are permitted to cross pit road during green flag runs. oddly enough, that's all we'd had until this last caution. cone is placed now, tho'.
Chad said pit pit pit but Jimmie was already planning to pit and prob would have gotten in trouble for violating the commitment cone (missing or not). They evidently were 2 seconds too late
Okay beat the double restart to death.
Thanks, red.
Penalty cars start behind EVERYONE now...so that makes being flawless that much more important
Have they told us what the yellow was for?
Martin
No offense taken. I one takes offense, the dogs get out of the yard.
J/k. Have 4 cats but strictly indoors.
Punday Sunday.
Look at those trees move as the cars blow by!
Wow! These restarts have totally changed the sport. Did I say wow?
Dot, yes the cars can still make pitstops without the cone, it would be too dangerous for a Nascar official to place the cone during actual racing. Like the time that Ambrose's team member went chasing after the tire that got away. Much safer without the cone til they could place it back when there's a yellow.
LOL @ Kyle Petty
and there's the answer that we all wanted about cause of the caution.
no need to apologize, kyle: we were all there with you!
Kyle reading this blog? Asked what the caution was for?
Or tweetin'.
Invisible debris again. Not faulting TNT. Bless KP for asking.
Wow that was a professional way to go to break.
Don't like the sudden break after the first on-track skirmish of the day (with Stremme)
Insert Side-by-Side comments here.
noooo. don't go to commercial with the 12 suddenly off the pace up high!
He has RaceBuddy open, so that gives him Twitter and email. I think he is redefining the role of analyst right now.
Caution. Looks like Stremme got in the wall.
Like the way Kyle got us the answer about what the yellow was for.
There's your first example of unintended consequences of the wave-around rule. The 7, 20, 42, and 55 didn't get "trapped" by that caution... they were legitimately lapped on the track and stole laps with the wave around rule. I'm not sure why the 6, 98, 82, and every other lapped car didn't do the same thing. They just passed on a chance to get a free lap. Bet that won't happen next time, all 12 or so lapped cars will steal laps having seen what just happened there. Ridiculous.
Tony says his car is plowing. hmmm

the tv landscape has certainly changed, hasn't it now?
pit buddy chat not being used as much as i thought it would be, last comment 15 minutes ago, thought it would give more updates from the drivers chats with crew chief
Tony asking if it's gonna rain on RB..said it looks black off turn two. CC said it's further away and doesn't think so.
@bozo: they appear to be using it only during cautions.
Strickin, At a Bristol or even a Texas, those cars would have HAD to stay out. This is such a long racetrack that they could pull it off. Its like Larry Mac says, this place is like a road course, just no right turns
No triple split. Botched commercial. TNT seems lost.
@ bozo, pit buddy showed comment about Ryan's car about a minute ago. #7 cylinder.
SLFan, that works here because you can do a stop and still stay on the lead lap it won't work alot of places because you'll just get relapped when you pit
@ bozo,
I agree about the PitBuddy chat. It'd be a lot more useful if they actually used it.
Still a little mad about going to break after Stremme hit the wall. I know they were probably getting the countdown til break but heck NBC would break away from a commercial for an on-track incident.
I think it's pretty damn cool Kyle was taking pics and putting them up on Twitter. Never seen something like that before.
@stricklinfan82 - That's just what I was thinking, if the track is big enough to not lose a lap under green (like Pocono and road courses), everybody can gain a lap, even cars that are 2 or 3 or more laps down. We could have had 14 Lucky Dogs on this caution, even Denny Hamlin could have gained one of his 22 laps back.
Hi all, from somewhere between RDU and PHX. Just want you to know how cool TNT technology is. I'm watching the race via RaceBuddy from my SouthWest flight. Its killing me that I dont have earphones, but this is soooooo cool.
:D
Jack, I think they had to be slaved to a commercial count that was in-progress. TNT does not use those goofy bumpers, so probably they had to go. No reason to otherwise, they have shown that in years past.
Hopefully TNT is still shaking the bugs out. I still like their coverage over FOX/BSPN.
@ Dr Track Girl, I was thinking about you and RB. Glad you can see the race.
track girl...your coming to phoenix?
heytrack girl! you have taken TDP to new heights --- literally!
Junior makes yet another pitroad mistake? What a shock.
Jr did similar to JJ in pit road.
Good follow up from TNT.
Nice Google earth shot with trees.
Ryan Newman too fast AGAIN??? sigh
I love Kyle's asking Bill questions!!! Good TV.
Phat, that is why I encourage every NASCAR fan to take a second and sign-up for Twitter.
Follow @TheDalyPlanet, @kylepetty, @RutledgeWood and @NASCAR_TNT.
Google "Twitter motorsports" for a full list of drivers, tracks and teams who are on Twitter.
JD
Thanks to KP, we are getting more info from pit stops.
wow...cars moving all around in the back.
I feel something brewing..hope not
Talking about AJ showing something else, wake up director
the incar is tony but the radio we are hearing is not tony's car...
Now back to AJ, they're lost. And Kyle is producing.
Dot...
Bean is still on the track. Impressive even though he is 3 laps down.
Marcos hits Reut. Yikes.
what's out ...I heard somebody say on scanner as they went to break
anon@4:32: can't agree -- but then again, i suspect that's not your point anyway? tnt isn't fox, they're doing a far better job than fox and you're working really hard to find flaws in tnt's coverage today. were you as vocal about fox?
TDP - I've had a Twitter acct for a while, I just wasn't expecting that kind of tweet commitment from Kyle lol
Tony said bad wedge (sounds like Tony Stewart to ME for whomever said it's NOT Tony)
@Dot - I agree, I don't know how big the LiveWire Energy sponsorship is for Dexter Bean, but he's giving it a great effort.
Radio was JJ "Gotta horse now"
JD, going back tow what you said about the commercial countdowns. Anything is better than those dumb bumpers before commercials on FOX and ESPN. I think we know what Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards look like. Just show us the top 5 and a live aerial shot before break or something. Which is just what TNT is doing today. The long green run took a lot out of them I think, but they're putting together a great broadcast today. I'm very impressed and pleased with it.
@david on my way back from NC to Ca. But having my race and my board in the air is beyond awesome!
Also, Kyle Petty says that Larry Mac has a Twitter too, but I didn't catch the @
I know! TDP in the Sky!
hey track girl? how'd the dissertation defense go?
OK, which of you guys have how many S&P cars are off right now?
don't feed the trolls
This isn't really related to the coverage, but what happened to the 24? He restarted like 7th or 8th I believe.
the spotter keeps saying he has cars around him...tony doesn't have cars around him as far as i can see, unless we are missing a lot of action up front..
Track girl
You have INTERNET on planes in the air?? Wow, didn't know they allowed that. Do you pay extra?
Can't be good for navigational system is it?
The track is weeping on the front straight near pit out between the pavement seams. You can see the cars kick up the water as they go by. And it was the source of the water at the start of the race which we saw on the 11 onboard. The guys asked about it and never got an answer.
@JD - S&P were 09, 66, 87, 71 and 36.
believe it is junior's radio on in car on rb
Lost sound on Pit command :(
They're putting rain hoods on the cameras.
Ah track girl, i was curious because I live in phoenix. Get to go to the airport for work here in about 2 hours so this pace better pick up some lol.
The 09, 87, 36, 64, and 71 are out...those are your S&P cars
gotcha on the Tony Channel...I just thought a minute ago are we hearing two drivers?
Sometimes it sounds like Tony and sometimes it does not. While ago it did and sometimes it does.
Hmmm..curious
When he was getting a drink with helmet up a bit ago I LOOKED like Tony was communicating.
Just as I post it comes back, I think I have wayyyyyy too much stuff going on here ;)
KuB got a geyser.
@JD - Although Marlin could have been a legitimate effort and they had a real breakdown, the Miccosukee sponsorship is on the car and that usually means they're not a S&P.
Seems like the PitBuddy is saying more and more since we said we weren't hearing much out of him/them/whoever it is.
Not sure what this is worth, but I live about 45 minutes from the track. It's drizzling here.
@red it went great! They said that I do in fact, know a lot about the history of stock car racing and its tracks! yay!
@Sophia Southwest has it free..and as for navigation, well. If I can see my race... :D Seriously. This is so cool to be able to catch the race. Super love letters going out to TNT and SW when I get home.
can it be that tnt has someone monitoring JD's blog?
i believe you are right, hearing both tony and junior..think maybe tony is so quiet they figure put someone else on
I see water spots on Tony's camera now onrb.and he's not saying anything about it...
That was just wrong I had TV sound down, looked up as 34 hits the wall thought it was live
Ooops 24 but you all knew that
Looking at radar, there are showers in the area.
Nracefan
I DID the same thing on Jeff Gordon's wreck.
now I hear numbers sometimes on TS car...just now 22..afew minutes ago 44.
something funky with sound. more voices
A few hiccups here and there but otherwise a great effort by TNT so far.
another change from fox: tnt notices that rain is possible.
as for the weeper on the front stretch from the beginning of the race: i saw that as well, anon@4:39. i don't recall long pond having weepers? cali, yes; pocono, no. so what's up?
good to hear Trackgirl!
Glad you can enjoy the race several thousand feet above us lol
Camera guy have Parkinson's for 31 pit stop?
Remember a few years ago Red when they cancelled qualifying because of weepers in turn 3?
They do happen here, Ive seen splashes here and there down the front stretch, doesnt seem to be causing any major issues though
@Track Girl- Internet and free peanuts : what more could you want? :)
Radar is showing some light rain coming from the northwest moving towards the southeast. It looks like we might see a rain shower the the closing laps of this race
Now the RB TS was Tony's pit stop but off synch with video.
Now it's not making sense again.
Something flukey...need to iron out..can Tony listen to other radios? is that what I am hearing?
How great to only hear about Kyle Busch during a routine pit stop! That's got to be the biggest change from FOX!
trackgirl
That's pretty cool from miles high in the sky you watchin' racin' and chattin' on TDP
:)
reports debris in turn 2
and rain too.
@david: oh, yeah, i had forgotten that. when it happened on the first lap, they explained it away as being the last moist spots that the jet dryers were handling. but at the point that anon commented, we were 90 minutes + into the race.
so, weepers? or something else?
and mikey needs to remember how to get on pit road without spinning. monday night should be interesting: wish schrader was there to kid mikey about it!
We've had more information from the pit reporters today than the entire season on Fox. Absolutely amazing the difference.
Guys,
Weepers in turn 3 caused qualifying in June 2003 to be canceled.
Wow! We are getting so much information and follow-up from all the TNT crew. TNT is taking FOX and ESPN to school. (Unfortunately, FOX/ESPN seem to want to be dropouts.)
Makiki
Hawaii
Do you guys think that perhaps RB is using the Driver Scan feature from Trackpass Scanner? I have been listening to drivers on the scanner with RB muted, so I can't be sure, but the person who said they were hearing the numbers could be hearing the person calling out the car numbers for the different scanners???
nothing anyone wants to hear before a race especially after the fontana debacle last year is weepers...
@ SrRaceFan,
Not only that, but not a lot of Junior sightings today, either. This proves FOX's coverage is nothing more than a gimmick and a popularity contest. I think I'm more mad at them now after seeing about 3/4 of a TNT race.
Have to agree with you, Jack, and I used to be a big FOX fan. Not anymore - especially after the actions during the last two seasons.
Hey Red it's the White Trash River Country commercial, I am so glad that's local I would be so ashamed if all the planteers saw that
Bevo, hitting that Army logo on RB was very cool.
And sorry to hear Scarlett's husband was grand marshal.
@ SrRaceFan,
I love the talent. The guys in the booth are great, but DW's biases are just getting too much. Mike and Larry are true professionals, unfortunately they're nothing more than puppets for David Hill to advertise cartoons with. But whatever, if that's what sells.
I agree with you all though about the pit reporters. Lots of good information from them today. And also, the transitions between them are very solid and there is a lot of understanding between everyone.
Just hope this rain on the way is only a brief shower. The weather here (near Scranton, PA) has gotten very overcast and drizzly.
TNT is doing a great job covering this race. I normally hate watching a pocono race on tv but these guys are making it more entertaining. True professionals in the booth. FOX and ESPN take some lessons from these guys!!!!
Good idea about the brakes, awful execution, not having video for the guy you are actually talking about.
A bit of a stretch.
@nrf: too funny: great minds running in the same gutter! i actually cringed and thought "thank god that's a local!" soooo embarassing.
Nice explaination of the 55 brake issue on pit stops from Kyle
Will be interesting to see the stats for today's coverage - race minutes vs commercial minutes. I bet TNT is showing waaaay more racing than FOX did.
Anon,
I think it was the best thing they had. Kind of a shock considering they have a camera on RB just for pit road. You'd think they'd have it span the entire pit road, but whatever. I believe that was Bowyer who Waltrip spun in front of. Kind of ironic, and made me chuckle.
This is essentially the NBC team from past years--they were the best back then (until their final year, 2004, I think, when they just gave up.)
SrRaceFan
Even if the commercials are high in number, in between them we are getting great camera work and information? so really, seeing more of the racing and less SPONSORED in car junk/graphics/video clutter. :)
@JD, do you know about how much wally and kyle get paid for these 6 weeks?
Anon 5:02,
Actually,
ESPN Director
Fox Producer
They're not just focusing on one driver and making it seem like the outcome of the race revolves around that driver. This has been great coverage.....they go back through the field and look for a battle.
@ Anon, 5:02,
Do you or does JD know if Mike Wells was the director of NBC back then? I never heard of him until last year when he completely turned TNT's coverage around. And it looks like his charm is working again so far.
@ MikeC,
I think a perfect example of this was the through the field they did that went from 21st to 30th. 30TH! We couldn't even get FOX to show the top 10 in a through the field, as they were too busy with that cartoon.
@Dr Track girl--WOW! I didn't realize SW was free! I shoulda researched more but that's fine my flight next month is only 3 hours both ways (direct flight) so it's not that much of a biggie! Plus looking at the flights even if I were able to rebook it's still cheaper to go the airline I chose.
@Sophia--yes my page is wacky too!
RB showing the debris on one of their cameras.
Wells did do NBC
@Jack - Wells used to be the ESPN producer.
Love that AFLAC comml.
Uh, TNT, you're missing pit stops.
24 says he has raindrops and is staying out
Dot, I even kinda miss Kasey Kahne with the gals Allstate commercials too.
wow! that is a GREAT overhead shot of the pit boxes!
Oh, good, TNT came back from commercial. Apparently, the 24 stayed out there.
TNT missing pit stops isn't too critical since we can see some of them on RB. No complaints here.
@ VickyD, I bet he doesn't. lol
wow, I don't get this, first the coke 600, now this, why in the world do people pit with it raining under yellow?!?!
i've been in the stands at pocono when it's been raining on the backstretch and sunny coming out of turn three into the frontstretch. weird.
Did they show those pit stops on tape delay?
Mike Wells was the original NASCAR on ESPN producer when guys like me were out there. Terry Lingner was the producer, he now does the IRL package for Versus.
Neil Goldberg followed Lingner, Neil is now at ESPN as the Sr. Producer. Pam Miller was the pit producer, she is now at Fox in the same role.
Mike did work the NBC package and he certainly has been a good influence at TNT.
Small world in sports TV land.
This is Pocono. They can say no rain in the forecast, but one of the 2 Pocono races (usually the June one) will have precipitation issues.
I would like a pina colada right now too.
JD,
Thanks a bunch for the explanation. I heard the names of Goldberg and Miller before. It is a small world for sure.
Let's see how long NASCAR makes JG wait if they throw the red flag for rain.
Ok, had to do some things and missed a few minutes..is this caution from the rain?
who is leading? had to take care of furry loved one in da house.
Weber: "It's gonna be a long six weeks." HA! Nice to see the guys in the booth having fun.
oops, meant to say Mike was the Director. Cannot blame that one on my laptop, just on multitasking.
One-armed paper hangers have nothing on me right now.
At least going to commercial Weber said "hopefully" we'll get to racing. FOX would tell you to stay glued to your seat for a stirring conclusion for the Coca-Co---- David Reutimann has won the Coca-Cola 600.
@Sophia - Caution for debris, extended due to rain. Gordon did not pit and is leading; apparently he's trying for a second rain win here.
ok many 'voices' on TS in car cam on RB! :)
@Jack - The only thing worse than watching the delay on TV was standing under the grandstands, waiting an hour and a half for them to call the thing like we all knew they were going to do.
24 came in
Hey hot, your boy is the LD.
Looks like the lapped cars that didn't take the chance to steal a lap last time learned their lesson. Lots of cars waiting for the wave-around rule this time. If not for the 24 staying out every other lapped car would have done the same thing. Sigh, this wave-around rule sure is a shame.
As we watch it rain at 5:15 local time at a track with no lights is anyone else wishing this race started at a more reasonable time? NASCAR and the TV networks keep getting what they ask for with these late start times....
24 is pitting now. Letarte says it will be his last pit stop--race strategy in play.
JD,
That's quite all right. I actually don't know what the difference is on those two positions, so no need to worry. :)
Is it possible for Wells to be the exclusive director for all NASCAR TV? Just a thought.
Andrew Thank you.
Harvick's voice on the in car audio.
they have random scan on i think
@ Andrew,
I can only imagine. My first Cup race was the June 2000 Pocono 500. It was a complete washout while my father had me sit in the grandstand. It was not very fun. Dodging raindrops beneath the grandstand (at least at Pocono the rain sneaks through the grandstand).
drivers confused on RB on TS in car cam.
MANY folks chattering. weird. don't recognize who is what.
lol i like this convo the 29 team is having
@strick - Well, this is the summer and we therefore have at least another two hours of sunshine. We'll be fine.
somebody asking Billy something is in front straighaway on track?
Sophia, that is the #29 Shell team. You can hear the references to Gil being Gil Martin. That is Gil, the spotter and Harvick all talking, maybe a 4th voice too
ok, weber? please stop calling it "double file shoot-out style restart" ok? it's a double file restart, period.
Yep, with the 24 pitting late it looks like every single lapped car in the field stole a lap that time. Be proud NASCAR, be proud.
Stricklin, sounds like you share my sentiment on the DFR process.
I think its a gimmick plain and simple to be honest.
I think the cautions will be longer anyway now....with getting all these cars lined up correctly with double-file.
LOL, poor Happy
I was confused on DFR but the lap issues they initially tried to explain CONFUSED me yet annoyed me.
now I am getting why. Should not be able to 'steal laps'.
I think double-file is the right idea.....but there's certainly some tinkering they need to do with it to fine-tune it.
Hi all, just got in. It's looking good so far on TNT. Everyone's getting faster on the track? Cool.
David,
I love the double-file restarts... the wave-around rule is a complete joke though. I've been bringing up this unintended consequence on this blog for years, every time DW has pushed for this wave-around rule during a Fox broadcast.
Giving one free pass every yellow cheapens the competition, in my view. Giving 5, 10, or 20 free passes under every yellow in which the leaders pit is a complete farce, in my opinion.
Its not that NASCAR intended that, its because this track is so big and the laps go by so slow that you can pit under green and not lose a lap, so it gives off the appearance of stealing a lap. They still have to hope a quick caution comes out or they can maintain their distance ahead of the leader.
Harvick is LOSING it on the radio with the crew
f-bombs are flying on the incar audio
Pocono is a unique situation for the DFR. Give it time.
@Sophia - I've had same issue with aidio of car cam. Not Tony talking , just got Jeff & Dale bleed/feed of audio. Its been very weird all day & my only complaint about RB. They need to fix audio, Tonys voice ain't that high or twangy LOL
Anyone know who the f-bombs are from? Harvick?
DFR = manufactured passing in my eyes. Gives off an appearance of more passing without curing issues of why there is less passing on long green runs.
Wave around, didn't know they were doing that until yesterday so that surprises me. But do you want those guys ahead of the leader and behind the pace car at the same time too?
Yes it is Harvick on racebuddy unloading on the team.
Are those WhopperJr commercials a little weird?
I agree.... instead of waving around....just have the lap down cars fall to the back where they belong.
Okay, Burger King officially has the creepiest ads in history.
@ Tracy, Yes they do. Notice where the woman touches the burger. Ick.
Not sure what all the harping about DFR is about... it is Saturday Night racing.... I worked on a Pacific Region NASCAR team back in the early 90's and this is how it worked....
Mike_C, if they just fall back behind the leaders, then they wouldn't actually complete all the laps. Passing them ahead keeps the lap count intact.
RaceBuddy needs to add car numbers to whoever they are following 'incar'
Yes the DFR ALONE is good but the wave around penalty is ludicrous. no wonder the drivers kept asking questions in the meeting..they were confused.
And some folks hate the lucky dog! Arf arf! woof woof.
p.s. agree about the CREEPY BK commercials. Makes me want to AVOID them and they are very close by. Perverse they are to me.
The lap down cars DO go behind the leaders with this system.
I still prefer these Whopper Jr. commercials over the Sir Mix-a-Lot/SpongeBob/Big Butts music video commercial any day.
So...they're still lapped cars correct?
I am certainly enjoying the double file restarts and the resulting discussion. This is just what NASCAR needed right now.
Combined with the painless TNT coverage, this has been fun to watch.
Did I really say that?
I finally had to turn off the "TS" camera.
All those voices....and trying to figure out who was who was tripping me out. DIZZY.
glad others noticed it. I just listened intermittently.
Mistress Mandy looks like Nancy Sinatra to me. How many times do we have to see that today?
I think this whole wave-around deal will be much more different at tracks shorter than 2.5 miles. It'll definitely hurt them more than help them at shorter tracks (say 1.5 or shorter).
And "Mistress Mandy" in black leather with a whip isn't helping my enjoyment of the race, either.
Dot, I thought the same about where the woman puts her hand on burger boy. Total ick factor.
Sophia, it was Tony's in car with Harvick's crew.
no other voices/teams to be heard
