Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Richmond (ABC - 7PM ET)

From the first race in Daytona we have now arrived at the final Sprint Cup Series race before the playoffs begin. This is a huge night for the NASCAR on ESPN production team. The tension in the TV compound, pictured above, is big.

Allen Bestwick will set the tone with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. There is a live college football game on ABC prior to the NASCAR telecast. Hopefully, things will happen as scheduled, but Bestwick is the best at dealing with live sports TV in a NASCAR setting.

This week it will be only Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty joining Bestwick in the Infield Pit Studio. Wallace continues to be outspoken and opinionated, while Daugherty has been put into the role of cheerleader and nothing more. The infield team is always good for a quick shot of enthusiasm during the event, but the three announcers upstairs are the ones really feeling the pressure.

There are going to be a lot of eyes on Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Friday night, Jarrett appeared to be tired during the Nationwide Series race after a long day on the air. It was Petree who stepped up and took the lead during the telecast.

On this night, the atmosphere is going to be electric. Translating that level of excitement to the millions of TV viewers is the challenge for ESPN. Jerry Punch is the person who has been chosen to do just that and it is his third season in the play-by-play position. This telecast needs to work, it's that simple.

Jarrett has been the anchor in the booth for two "Backseat Driver" telecasts of Nationwide Series races that had no play-by-play announcer. While this concept was interesting, it has also resulted in Jarrett becoming unclear on his role. Sometimes, he jumps in and supplies the excitement when Punch has faded. On other races, he waits until he is asked a question to respond. Hopefully, both Petree and Jarrett will step-up and lead the way during this telecast.

On pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. This group is going to be dealing with some emotional drivers and crew chiefs during the race. It should be interesting to watch this dynamic unfold.

On TV, Richmond is a challenge. Cutting cameras to stay ahead of the cars and let them race toward the camera makes all the difference. Getting behind leaves viewers watching cars racing away from them all night long. This is easy to do as the laps grind by. Richmond features great aerial shots, a super low camera on the backstretch and great pictures of glowing brake rotors.

The graphics tonight are either going to be informative or simply drive viewers crazy. Everyone knows the Chase is going to be set by this race, so the ESPN team has the challenge of deciding how many times that is going to be mentioned in the race.

Throw in a little rain delay and some extended caution flags and it could be a very long night.

This post is going to serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Richmond on ABC. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks again for dropping by tonight.

In reality, they have been covering mostly 'chasers' for the past 10 races. Once they get to their mythical 'Race to the chase', no one else matters. I wish the 'other 33' would just park for the last 10 races. They might as well, for all the coverage they get.

ESPN volume on 1. MRN on in the background now.

Martin Vincent said...

@Sally - And there'll be a debris caution every time the leader catches up to the 12th place guy. :)

kbaskins said...

Carl is having some serious problems, maybe transmission *and* voltage.

Drat!

Sally said...

Is anyone as enthralled by this whole crapshoot format as the media is?

Dot said...

Honestly, have we seen any debris? I don't watch every second.

Hey, it's Tim.

Anonymous said...

anybody have an mrn link? I want to mute my TV.

Martin Vincent said...

I don't think they've shown the debris for Tony's lucky dog or for Matt's lucky break.

red said...

OMG! now tech center explains the back-up system in the car. what a waste.
does espn know who their audience is tonight?!? i'm pretty sure there aren't too many yellow-stripers this late into the season!

Sally said...

Red...they are assuming the crapshoot format is SO exciting that lots of people who don't normally watch have tuned in just to see who will make it. Yawn.

MikeC said...

What's with all the silence??? It sounds so awkward

Charlie said...

He takes that spot back away, says JP

Newracefan said...

Anyone else following Brad K on Twitter his PR guy or whoever is hysterical
keselowskiweb Then David Ragan helps Brad into his pit stall. Not the way we normally do it, guys. Is that how UPS usually delivers dude?

Anonymous said...

That's it. I'm out. I am so sick of ESPN coming back to the pit studio instead of the booth. It totally ruins the flow of the coverage.

Sally said...

What's the deal with Jr's car? He's up and down like a yo yo.

Martin Vincent said...

That phantom debris just kept Kenseth from losing any chance to catch up to Vickers and Busch, now he's gaining spots and just points away from bumping one of them out of 12th.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not even halfway folks, how you liking it so far?

red said...

sally: all i can say is: they have reached an incorrect assumption, in my opinion.

Vicky D said...

I see other cars on the track, but I don't hear any info on them.

Seriously considering going to bed and some of my drivers are in the top 5 zzzzzzzzzzz

Unknown said...

this from MRN ...Montoya, usually the fiery one, told his crew to calm down

kbaskins said...

@ JD

It's awful. Punch can't even remember the driver's names any more. He's resorted to using just numbers.

If I wasn't using my computer's speakers to listen to Carl's radio, I'd switch over to the radio broadcast.

Not even halfway folks, how you liking it so far?

not so much, jd, not so much.

feels as if there's absolutely no continuity tonight. part of it is the constant changing of camera angles. every time that happens, i feel as if i ahev to re-adjust my viewing to try and figure out what i'm seeing on the screen. it's exhausting.

i wish we could just have one camera angle for an extended period, like maybe the overhead shot.

(and it's raining AGAIN here. . . sigh.)

MikeC said...

How many "home town track for Hamlin" references have we heard?

Sally said...

Does ESPN seriously not realize how much they dilute the excitement of the race by just covering the chasers? I know they've been crowing about ratings going up the last 3 races, but seriously...is .2% worth bragging about? To me it just sucks the life out of each race.

Anonymous said...

MRN calling side-by-side battle for the lead, ESPN replaying video clip from last night.

JD: ZZZzzzz..... Dr. Jerry Punch can not do play-by-play. All stats, all the time. Car numbers, hometowns, ages, # of wins, # of championships, # of points, # of positions. Gave me a headache.

red said...

MikeC said...
How many "home town track for Hamlin" references have we heard?

i think it's one less than the number of times we've been told mark martin is 50 years old -- but i could be wrong.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Couldn't agree more to all of it...

PammH said...

JD, I'm just about ready to call it a nite. I'm taping, which will suck when I play it back Sun morn, because I will have to listen to the booth. Actually, I won't, cuz prob fast forward thru everything except who got in, cuz they won't call the race...:(

Dot said...

Poor Regan. Hope he gets back out.

Newracefan said...

Poor Regan that car has been a mess today

red said...

and that demonstrates one of the biggest problems w/the broadcast tonight: the 78 car blows up but they just keep talking about the 17 car before FINALLY giving us a replay. still no solid inof as to what happened, just speculation. "might be the brakes going . . . "

if you're not a chaser, you're invisible even when you wreck.

Sophia said...

JD

regarding tweeting while watching and eating Nascar food...Funny!! But seriously, so many of us find that "if the race ended now, the Chase would be abc"...sigh

the MRN guys are talking about the Chase but managing to do it in a way that does not make me wanna scream...so MRN is doing great job.

Dr. T

I must say I am not a fan of the guys in the tv both but like them all as individuals. It's not only excitement in vocals but voice inflection and 'sounding more interesting'. Doesn't do well to talk in monotone but on the other hand, not a fan of the sing songy" either....one needs to find their niche and it would behoove these guys to listen to themselves and take notes.

I'm tempted to turn on the booth since I am blogging here and then ask myself...WHY?

I am sure I will be stuck with the PRN guys enough the next 10 races. :(

TexasRaceLady said...

I bet my friend at the race is seeing a lot more racing than I am.

It sounds so exciting on the radio, then I make the mistake of looking at the TV --- *sigh*

Marcos Ambrose gambles with 2 tires per MRN.

Patrick said...

Hey, I just joined you (after cooking dinner), I hear Mark Martin is 50 and Vickers was in, w/Kyle and Kenseth out before the caution.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pammm, any other PXP guy would have us on the edge of our seats tonight.

Eli Gold, Barney Hall, Dave Moodie, Rick Allen, Mike Joy and even good old Ralph Sheheen.

This is just flat out embarrassing for a professional TV network.

Hope you hang in there for the rest of the season.

The Loose Wheel said...

red, regan never blew up. they had battery trouble earlier and replaced the alternator, then just now the right front blew

Unknown said...

ESPN is pretty much a waste of time ...using MRN audio exclusively now, glancing up when something of interest happens ...go ahead, JD, get your rest ...sweet dreams of wideshots and low backstretch cameras angles that show real racing

MikeC said...

It's obvious since this is the first race on OTA television since Dover in June that they must feel there's novices who haven't watched since then. They're explaining the simplest things....like pit road speed limits and rules, and so forth.

Dot said...

Full throttle is the dumbest gimmick that ESPN has. It is absolutely pointless.

kbaskins said...

Why do they think this is cool?

--KarenB

Vicky D said...

JD, this chase format is sure making these last 6 or so broadcasts very boring for me. Why don't the non-chase drivers deserve a peek or a word or two.

Anonymous said...

MRN - Play-by-play by the turn announcers

ESPN - Full throttle with 30 spotters talking at the same time.

Anonymous said...

I have occasionally walked thru & looked at the TV -it is not even close to what MRN is "showing" me. What a huge waste of resources by the WWL.

Newracefan said...

McDowell in the 36 tweeted he was out because of bad engine vibration evidently wasn't a S&P this week

red said...

@david: yeah, i know he didn't blow up as in his engine blew. but since there was no information about how and why he ended up in the wall, i couldn't think of a way to describe it.
"wadded up" is probably more what i was thinking.

still detest full throttle.

espn needs to "let the race occur naturally" because this is a mess.

Sally said...

Vicky...according to the media, if they want coverage, they need to run up front. (Usually accompanied by a smug look and probably a "Nya nya"). They just think the crapshoot has added a ton of excitement...because we should be thrilled about who, more than 500 points behind the leader, might get lucky and get a champeenship. any of us who disagree are idiots who have no idea what makes exciting racing. I've raead that from many sources who REALLLY know racing.

Anonymous said...

MRN: Martin Truex Jr. passes Jeff Burton for 11th

ESPN: Single car tight shot of Kyle Busch

Sally said...

Oh great...now they want to put everyone in the crapshoot who wins a race. If they keep this up, we may end up bakc with everyone 'eligible. like it used to be.

PammH said...

JD, of course I will hang in the rest of the season, even tho my guy will barely get a mention! Remember, Nascar is the only sport I follow, altho I sure liked the ending of the ftball game that preceded the race!! Just poop out on nite races-I'm old ya know!! I'm true blue if nothing else..:)

DrTeplisky said...

Full Throttle=Tower of Babel. I'd have rather heard nat sound than that. Richmond has a unique pitch when Sprint Cup cars are wide open under green.

Did I just hear DJ float a trial balloon for a tweak to the Chase to put winners of races in?

I can't be listening to the same race that's on TV.

Just not possible.

if your kenseth wouldn't you consider taking 2 tires at some point and if late enough in the race, maybe even gas only, that would be something say with 15 laps to go

That's why I said, since this is the first race on Over-The-Air television, they must feel that there's a large piece of the viewership tonight that hasn't seen a NASCAR race before. They must think some of those Michigan-Notre Dame viewers stuck around.

Fyi, speaking of aging...

did you guys know if you use a towel for a turban on your head to help dry your hair, it's like a mini facelift? Seriously..instant mini forehead lift. Between the wet hair and the wet towel, the weight stays shifted towards the back of your head and lifts the forehead....Next time you wash your hair, try it..works ladies. :)

I wish it were acceptable to wear a towel on my head in public..if I had a better quality webcam, I would show a demonstration in a Bubbletweet. :-)

Ok the drop down graphic on this HD station is so tiny compared to the tv in my room..but I like having radio on the big stereo so I can hear it while doing other things.

Sitting and just trying to watch the tv is just so annoying isn't it. Sad what has happened to this sport.

I am SO GRATEFUL for MRN access during the Cup races.

MRN says the attitude of guys in the chase with nothing to lose but wanting to WIN this race could cause some cautions at this track...I think the race needs to end.

The Loose Wheel said...

red they can.

they are steel pipes and the edges can be sharp.

honestly anything on the side of that car can cut a tire down, looked like stremme's right rear fenderwell caught burton's tire on the edge but that sideskirt or exhaust opening could easily have sliced that tire.

@david: i think i need a further explanation. the exhaust pipes themselves don't extend out of the openings, right? and i thought the openings thru the car body were rounded edges around the exhaust vents. so what sharp edge could the tire have contacted? a valve stem snapping seems more likely to me than the exhaust pipes vent openings causing a tire cut.

where can you pay to get mrn every week? this is my first time streaming online with the TV and it is SO MUCH MORE EXCITING.

The Loose Wheel said...

red, if you hit on the side of the car, the steel exhaust pipe maintains its shape, and would extend out from the body panel that you just hit against something and knocked in. therefore, the exhaust would extent out, while they are rounded, if they havent been sanded down around the edges, the edge around that circle could be fairly sharp, and at the very least, sharp enough to cut a tire down.

red said...

my mrn station is found at www.wnpv1440.com. in fact, the transmitter is about 2 miles from here: it's the local radio station for this community.

that's free live broadcast ...explained here earlier that delay is likely due to uplink/downlink satellite connection ...also check www.motorracingnetwork.com for MRN broadcast affiliates in your area

red said...

@david: copy that. now it makes sense. it was just the way the closed-captioning read combined with the odd angle that brewer forced the tire into at the tech center.

The Loose Wheel said...

whether that is what happened right there with burton is beyond me to guess, it could have been a valve stem or something cut the tire down, just saying that it is possible.

the valve stems on these cars are metal though, not rubber like what is in a passenger car. also they stick in a bit so i really think right there the side panel of the 12 cut his tire right on the sidewall where it meets the tread.

JD -
haven't heard from you lately, did you call it a night? I'm having trouble staying away here ...MRN calling action on the track, while ESPN showing leader ...looking forward to F1 - Varsha, Hobbs, Matchett and Windsor (?) are informative and entertaining

I checked to see if you got the nascar.com online radio broadcast with TrackPass Scanner ($25 per year), but you don't. You have to buy TrackPass PitCommand ($65 per year). Sorry.

MikeC said...

These guys are talking like the race is over....there's still 50 laps to go!

Martin Vincent said...

I thought I saw smoke from Vickers' car. Why are the announcers not saying a thing about that?

Charlie said...

That was fun watching it there for a little bit. They showed racing.
Then it got back to the old way.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nope. Just letting you guys exchange info. We have all developed a lot of knowledge over the last three years to get around the ESPN disaster.

MikeC said...

Vickers' car has been smoking like that for about the last 50 or so laps

The Loose Wheel said...

its the splitter hitting the track MV. watch though, Vickers' car falls off after 20 laps. Happened before too. At this rate they will be battling for 7th when this ends, 77 and 29 will be coming soon too.

@Sophia--no it was tonight he tweeted it after they did the Rusty tribute during GF racing

Sophia said...

Thanks Glen

I seem to be running into problems with outdated music players on these mrn links? I will look at that later..don't like the new real player for reasons when i try to burn music disks...so afraid to download 'new stuff'..sometimes old is better.

but I hear what your saying & will keep that in mind.

a few years ago when MRN was on small AM stations, the racing stuff got bounced for H.S. Football, or basketball games...this FM station only carries country music or the cup races.

NASCAR should make their radio FREE online.

INDYraces give it free and the VIDEO online free...& not some animated thingie..the real cars! :-) Terrific.

tx again for the tip

Martin - I noticed the #24 has also been smoking tonight. That is where the pit reporters should do some investigating, but we got 0.

kbaskins said...

Sarcasm becomes him:

@dustinlong: #NASCAR .... 18 on radio: I'm glad I got my loosest set of tires at the end of the race. Good, good, real good.

Go Vickers! (Sorry, David.)

So JD, what changed? ESPN promoting truck race...

Karen said...

Sophia, don't download the first player. If you don't download, it gives you another option, so that's where I'm listening. Click on listen now over to right.

MikeC said...

Would there really be that much of a swing for Kurt Busch not to make it? Considering how many S&Ps there's been?

Haus14 said...

i agree with anon regarding the tech garage...there is no reason ESPN should be transporting the tech garage to every track. there would be absolutely no difference between having the studio on wheels and having it back in Bristol.well, other than it would be a whole lot cheaper to keep it in Bristol and it would look exactly the same.

Sophia said...

gymmie..oh, ok.

I need to go thru your NASCAR list..you got more contacts and Secret Agent 007 info than anybody I know. ;-)

I need a snack....or something to drink

Dot said...

@ Mike C, I commented about Vickers' car to Dan. He said it's an illusion. He noticed it on other cars too.

Mike said...

I just got the powerball numbers but the race in in a small bix with no sound.

red said...

aww nuts: just lost closed-captioning for some reason.

and, believe it or not, i have the lottery in one window and the other window is the race.

un-freakin'-believeable.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nothing David, the problem was ESPN not promoting the Cup races on Fox and TNT during NASCAR Now and the Nationwide races.

SPEED and ESPN have always had a deal.

Martin Vincent said...

@MikeC - Kurt is only 105 points ahead of Vickers and 38th place is only 5 laps down, it could still happen.

Delco said...

Wow...JR 23rd....Sam Hornish 10th...whodathunkit.

Unknown said...

should we let the planeteers know that Denny Hamlin's 'home track' is really 1/3-mile Southside Speedway and not RIR ...oops, guess I just did, huh

kbaskins said...

@ Sophia

Gymmie is actually 0014, because she's twice as smart as 007 (to quote a Matt Damon movie trailer I saw recently).

Martin Vincent said...

These better be the last commercials, there have been way too many and there are only 35 laps to go.
