Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Charlotte (7PM - ABC)
This is one of the biggest races of the Chase. Lowe's Motor Speedway is the home track for almost every Sprint Cup Series team. It's a night race under the lights and in primetime on ABC.
Allen Bestwick starts the night with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show at 7PM. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Handling the interviews are Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.
The pre-race show is thirty minutes and then the NASCAR on ESPN team takes the air. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will handle the live action.
Last night, ESPN started the night off with a great pre-race show for the Nationwide Series race. Bestwick handed the race off to announcer Marty Reid and the action began on a great note. The first thirty minutes consisted of wideshots of racing, aerial views of the speedway and interviews with drivers out of the race.
Then, ESPN turned the page and started down the road fans know all too well. Extremely tight shots of one or two cars. Recorded soundbites played back during the live race under the green flag. Bizarre oldies music blaring while the announcers threw to commercial. It was the same bad dream again for NASCAR fans.
Marty Reid and Dale Jarrett repeatedly told the producer and director that there was "three wide action further back in the pack." It did not matter. Stories like Mike Bliss and Dave Blaney carving their way through the field were poorly covered.
It was all Sprint Cup drivers all the time. It has been that way since Daytona with the exception of the short-track race this summer from Indy.
On this Saturday night it should be interesting to see if ESPN learns from the Friday night struggles or just repeats the same TV production pattern. One thing is for sure, we will all learn the answer to that together.

Jeez, my driver is so bad even Jr. passed him.
--KarenB
what other feed does Hot Pass us when mrn is off. right now some low pitched voice guy is talking never heard him before
What's up with the Harvick speeding penalty? Did you radio and computer guys get it??
OHH trackpass - not hotpass
Let's see...the car out front in the clean air runs away from the field. How unique.
Twitter had the penalty
Sprinkles at the track, as per Carl's spotter.
--KarenB
JJ water on windshield, just what we need
@JD- Gotcha :) Guess they forgot that old B-school saw about not letting your money get mad
24 says it is raining
Thank goodness for Andy.
Had to love Junior Johnson on
Track Side or one of those shows.
He started talking about the very
""" UN USUAL Race cars that be built back in the day...***
We were on the floor :)He pretty
much said what we all know anyway .. NOBODY WAS GONNA CATCH HIM - cuiz they didnt know what to
look for hee hee !
Imagine those folks out running
smokey bear baak in the day !
Well thanks for reading ..let me
turn off the tv .. I have had more
than enough of theeeeeeeee
worst team in history.
Buenos Noches
Gonna be a long night, folks.
only found out about the Harvick speeding penalty on twitter
ok, decided to make an attempt to watch coverage with open mind. But it is so painful to know how much we miss during a caution that is happening and no update from the booth when they come back from break. i just think if a small mention to update is given to fans it would be a big help in this abc coverage
Wow! A radar!
I forgot about the race and I missed the first 13 laps. Duh! Jerry Punch sounds extremely monotone as usual.
Rain..again?
I can't get anyting on Nascar.com to load...tried 2 browsers. oh well :(
Jonathan thats what Ive been talking about - I believe its the track PA when PRN (or MRN in other tracks) in in a break but this guy is annoying.
I hope you guys brought coffee, it is going to be a very long night.
Triple splits???
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head. When JPM's audio is quiet, we can hear the radio broadcast and they are fantastic.
sally speaking of that, I was thinking since Nascar did everything right w the Nationwide COT that they didnt do w the COT in Sprint Cup why dosent Nascar swap cars next year. No Bumpstops, No wing we get a racing spoiler, better all around and from what the racers who raced this new car they love it compared to the cot. and Mustang, wouldnt that bring back alot of fans if we get the muscle cars in sprint cup. dosent make sense to me
Just checked the Intellicast radar and this shouldn't last long. There's another cell behind this one and a third that's dissipating a bit farther out. They're all small and should be gone within 15 minutes or so.
Brad K. speeding, see if they mention it.
Hey, any start and park cars tonight? Where is MV or buschseries61?
No coffee for me - looks like a Bloody Mary Evening for me... Willie has the mornings :)
I'm not bothering with trackpass, racepass or whatever you call it. I'm here, Twitter and N.com leaderboard only.
No coffee here, only budweiser and michelob and its saturday night whos thinking of sleep not me! :) on secound thought I may need a cup of joe later on! Thank DP
Good lawd. I'm having some serious laptop speed issues. I think I'll take this rain caution as an opportunity to restart. Been having resource problems since last week's MS (XP)update.
Maybe the rain will help keep them bunched up for the evening to help the racing.
Just like all the other COT races, they'll get in line until the last 20 laps and then the rcing will be good to the end.
@ bevo, I'm on my over. Not too spicy please.
Jonathan - $$$. In this economy, Cup teams do not want to build new cars. Where would the old COT cars go?
I do agree the new Nationwide COT looks and sounds much better than the Cup COT. We can only dream...
jonathan, I will keep TDP readers up to date on the Danica story.
I believe the N'wide COT and the high profile races have her attention and the Go Daddy money.
Regardless of personal feelings or doubts about her racing ability, her presence might really help the series.
The sponsor count on the N'wide and Truck side is at critical mass right now.
#25 car also got a panelty.
Oh boy, you guys are going to be snoozong by 11!!
best sight ive seen all day, terry leads a lap
DirecTV has the race top 10 on their Scoreguide along with the other scores
And have they said what happened to Carl Edwards he's down to 39th.
JD - Nemechek should be the only S&P for the night. The #71 has a sponsor, the #66, #36, & #37 missed the race.
If the race ended now I could be asleep by 11PM Eastern
They won't swap the COT's because that means that nascar would have to admit they made a huge mistake with the car to begin with. The classic case of an elephant being a mouse designed by committee.
for once a song to break that applies. who will stop the rain, by ccr. thanks abc
No mention that their in race reporter Marcos has engine problems. Who will be the next victim to replace him?
Once again, if you're not in the chase, you're not in the race.
@Dot- Love it spicy :) Got this stuff called Red Eye - best mix ever
Punch plains lacks excitement
You guys like this double box with live racing??
TV and PRN are together; MRN has been ahead.
It might be OK if you knew who they were talking about. AP starts to mention a car, and they promptly switch to another car?
Fox Trax not working, had to switch to Nascar Leaderboard
Nemechek only S&P so far.
Carl's car was so incredibly loose he couldn't drive it. And he likes a loose car.
--KarenB
No I don't care for the 2 boxes when they are racing. Pick one and then Zoom out a bit.
The sound of the cars is draining out the booth. It doesn't really matter since they don't tell us much anyway.
back in 2004 when AB did pxp he HAD EXCITEMENT in his broadcasts but alas JP will not get replaced.
If only Punch can complain about his hotel room.
Well JD it's better than a tight shot on one car
@JD Don't mind it. Lets me pick what I want to watch. I wish it filled the whole HD screen.
Where's the garage interview with Sammy & his team ?!!?
Nope-HATE the 2 sxs boxes! It's awful. Actually showing some racing! Only w/chase guys tho.
I want WIDER shots. Period.
Less in car junk. Since u asked
SPLIT screen still does NOT show perspective. Hello
@Busch- no audio like that for me on either DirecTV SD or OTA HD. Might need to check your audio settings
JD- I'll take double video boxes over tight shots, bumper cams, roof cams, helmet cams, Full Throttle, and full screen video pieces.
Next Year, Lowes Should paint the walls PINK!!!
Wow..JP gets excited talking about optimus prime & megatron
PRN's camera work is a lot better that ESPN's. What's that-they don't have cameras? Well, their race call is better than ESPN's camera work! There, that's better.
I'm OK with the 2 boxes but there is too much dead space. Make them bigger and lose all the other crap.
He also loves to throw to commercial and read promos...
ARRRRGH. The first "if the race ended now..."
old cup cars go to nationwide. i know this will never happen but, we would have a somewhat more true stock car in sprint cup and we would have better racing in the series that should have better racing. just my 2 cents thanks guys. and i think we would see better ratings and more attendance w muscle cars. mustang, maybe camaro, challenger... sounds interesting
wth, the director was so quick to direct the cameras back on the front of the pack when JP started talking about AJ,Stremme and sadler
bevo - Thanks for your help! Had to adjust the audio settings.
@rich I just tried Fox trax and it is working for me.
Is Sergio Leone directing again tonight?
Sophia--sorry it's not working for you :(.
JennaFryer and MartySmith are making fun of the ESPN crew i think lol.
Marty 17's stronger'n ocean cable in the top groove.
Jenna Well, new leader. 48 SAILED by 17.
A BADH...If he is directing, can we get the Morricone soundtrack with the racing?
LOL! @Dead Horse! Totally agree!
Not Leone. David Lynch!
Can't even get my Firefox online. Says it's crashed.
Morricone going to commercial?
@ Bill - LOL! They are going to get in trouble now...
Maybe we can all start whistling the theme to 'The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly"...which pretty well describes this race so far.
Bill Jenna is making fun of ESPN crew.
@Busch- glad it worked, happens to me all of the time. I think gremlins or gnomes sneak in and change the settings when I'm gone. I know it's not my dog - he's more interested in the laptop :)
@ Sally
What was the good? :-)
--KarenB
hamlin takes lead
Mine too, @Karen.
Junior ur to 30th?
If we have to tolerate directors not familiar with motor racing, how about Sam Peckinpah?
Ummm, 'up'?
Quentin Tarantino?
I have been missing Race
Buddy like a long-lost friend...
Beating, yes! Peckinpah it is.
Karen
The newest Firefox KEPT crashing for me so I went back to older version (read on some message boards FF is losing favor as it crashes so much) I use a PC but many say same thing.
FINALLY PRN from NASCAR.com is working for me..the talking is different place from PSK...I hope it's not as behind...can't tell yet
:)
I had to turn off AdBlocker or I guess I clicked on the wrong thing..one thing asked me to SIGN UP..maybe that was the Trackpass I guess
Any word on how Rootie is feeling?
bevo - Jenna is beside herself that Jimmie's near the front ... He's her personal favorite ...
But Peckinpah has lot of action in his movies...tho it does tend to be in slow motion!
I am sailing to the fridge for another adult beverage while we go to another commercial under green.
If the race were to end now, I would be angry and stay in the kitchen for the rest of the evening.
I think Alfred Hitchcock is directing this ..PSYCHO
as in HOW they make the camera directing decisions!
&
VERTIGO from the helmet cams
;-D
KarenB - Try ORCA or Flock ... They're on the same base as Firefox ... And much more stable ...
The new Speedtv.com boards don't like all of the Firefox versions ...
I guess that Transformers check cleared....
Beating - good one and that's a terrific idea. I'm going to sail into the dining room to pour myself an adult beverage.
I'm sailing to the kitchen for a bottle of White Zin.
Will have to pretend it's an Irish Coffee. :)
Yes Sally, I was thinking of the slo-mo, LOL.
Sophia, im starting to have browser troubles with Vista here. intermittent browser usage. Some calling it a glitch in Vista, some calling it a virus, I cant figure the dang thing out =/
Denny digging, as is Mears.
I get the feeling we're going to hear about him back in the #1 next year...
Triple screen?!?! Really?!?! You have got to be kidding me!
I pulled the cork on the wine bottle a long time ago.
Montoya fastest car on track
When you use Firefox and go to Nascar.com you have to take adblock off so you can see all the boxes and buttons.
@ dear Sophia, didn't he direct Rear Window too? That's another view we get from BSPN.
I am on PRN audio now and I fear switching to ABC audio. Is Punch comatose yet?
I'll take the title of another Hitch movie "Rope" and use it to bind and gag the ESPN director.
PRN guys having a nice visit w/Eddie Gossage at the moment-off to ck my Farm on FB for a min. That should tell ya something..
these guys are flying and sailing...what is this? an air & water show?
@Charlie my FoxTrax is still not working
David
I had to get a new laptop several months ago but lucked out and got an XP AND a matte screen. I really fought going to Vista
(I need to take pic of old laptop..held together with C Clamp and ductape from broken hinge..and has no fan as motherboard was bad for two years -need to keep freezer brick under it. Takes 3-19 attempts to hook up to Internet...long story) Looks hillbilly but ONCE it's on, still works like a dream for most things I needed a laptop for.
My room mate has the new VISTA & shiny reflective screen. Tough on the eyes and Vista is slow..but he uses FFox.
He also directed - "Wrong Man"
racing and we are watching pit stops. Did they not learn from yesterday?
Again, full screen pit stops under green. Absolutely embarrassing.
Hitchcock experts abound!
Good interview with Gossage on radio.
my Vista KILLS my old XP. But 3 gigs of memory to my old 512.
I reworked it where I booted with hard connection unplugged, loaded browsers then connected back to internet, worked like a charm. go figure.
Alan Gustaffson making this car better for Tony Stewart? What? Did I hear that correctly?
Did ESPN show Waltrip's Jackman getting hit by the 83 car?
you see, green flag stops. racing on the track. and what do i get full screen pit stops. if there is some racing on track i missed it. one of the few times i do not mind a double box on my screen.
One camera on one car and one pit crew makes for a Heluva Good HD video portrait, but is no good for telling the story of the race. We do want to tell the story of the race, don't we guys?
Wait 10 - 15 minutes and they might mention problems on pit road...or injuries.
Mears made up a TON of ground on that round of stops
Attention Vince Welch: Alan G is Mark Martin's crew cheif, NOT Tony Stewart.
6p01, thanks for that. I didn't put the newest version of Firefox on to begin with and haven't been updating that old version. Nice to have some alternative browsers.
Karen, not KarenB.
Okay, going back to baseball in the interim...
Medical going to the 55 pit. Let's see if we get the update of what we missed even with full screen pit stops.
Why can't they show the pit stops in split screen? We don't need to see them one at a time. If something happens, they can rerun it. They have no problem doing that for cautions.
I understand Mr. Hitchcock has nothing else to do, so he could be at Lowes filling in for EESPN. I believe that's called an upgrade. No, that wasn't a Mr. H cameo - that was Bruton.
Are we getting close to 'competition caution' time?
@Richard... Thought so.
On HP those guys that are on when PRN isn't - one of them is Sean Pagano - the former protegee of Steve Byrnes on the old Nascar Now on FSN.
@ Dot
Yes Rear Window works...Rope
Also the
MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH...that's what I will call Mike Wells.
We need his CAMERA DIRECTION..but he knows too much and thus can't be used for BalognaSPN
I wonder how ESPN will handle the 55 pit injury. Will they pull another 'just moments ago' or tell the truth 15 minutes have passed.
doesn't competition caution mean a driver we want on the lead lap is the lucky dog?
You guys scanning find out what the injury was in the 55 pit?
It seems they have a JJ and Montoya lovefest regardless of where they are running.
Jr is a lap down
83 supposedly hit the 55 jackman. Knee injury, could not walk
And another top 10 in football goes boom (Va Tech)
MRN said he finished pit stop but was carted off..
Not sure if it was the 55 or 29 now...getting conflicting reports and missed the start of MRN's report on it.
sailing, bottom feeder, we are a water sport.
Anyone playing the "Sailing" drinking game... time for another one.
@ David....aha! There are lots of cars in danger of going a lap down very soon. Stinks up 'the show'.
Caution during comml?
@charlie... Harvick called himself a bottom feeder at last year's Oxford 250.
I thought it was 55 guy hit according to Jeff Gluck? Hope he is ok
Caution out!
caution is out
Actually it's PRN
NOT MRN
but who's counting. . .
Sally, to be honest I hate competition and debris cautions. Id rather see a "dull" race run caution free then a manufactured race by a bunch of bogus cautions for nothing on the track.
I find this exciting, spinner. Caution
According to Gluck jackman for Mikey was hit on pit road by 83 car.
TA DA!!!!!
HA, KB spun!!
Has anyone else tried to flip to the race during the normal c0mmercial times that regular TV uses?? Some how everytime the race is in commercial too!! How can a live even have the same scheduled commercialS!!!!
Sam get in the 18 car?
I agree, David. But this is the NEW Nascar! 'racertainment'.
Sorry, confirmed #55 jackman. I had a couple people say 29..guess they're pitted next to each other.
Yes, PRN tonight...lol. I never can keep it straight..just know it usually sounds better than TV..
Well this is an improvement for pit stops.
Wait - never mind...
You have the feeling that the ESPN guys are looking forward to going home right about now?
What a let down in the TV energy.
yeah! robby gordon got a mention. back on lead lap, YES!
jp thanks for letting us know
@sally... NASCAR has been all about the "show" for at least a decade now. It's not unique to them. Regional series often concentrate on that too. It can work... sometimes.
Is this the caution where the 55 jackman gets hurt?
Hotpass is using some Sprint video tonight. Nice.
Sally, that makes me sad hearing that comment. The sport wasnt founded for the fans, it was founded for the racers to have a safer sanctioned orderly place to race without getting in trouble with the law or with outlaw races. Then the $$ rolled in and the entertainment became more valued then the race.
I can sit there and watch laptimes all day and find it fascinating. That last run before stops watching JPM just slice into Denny's lead was impressive. Then watching Denny walk away after stops was fun too. Kahne was turning the fastest laps on that last run, Denny 2nd fastest on track. Shockingly Allmendinger had some fast laps too.
Kyle spinning out is a shocker, ran out of talent I guess.
Bent that splitter pretty bad its going to kill them. Wonder if ABC will discuss that?
Bevo, I could not believe they blew not only the caution flag pitstops but the green flag as well.
It just boggles the mind how SPEED, TNT and Fox can get the fundamentals right but a huge media company like ESPN is so far off the track....
Is Beak really in 15th? That's a racer.
@J Fellenbaum- rule of thumb : if the track name is _ Motor Speedway it's PRN. All others MRN except Indy. And all Truck races are MRN.
LOL Dot!
I wouldn't put it past them...
BTW, I initially made a typo in your name. I called you "Sot". Sorry. :-)
--KarenB
@ Tripp...it's always been about the show, but such obvious manipulation is the new 'standard'. Things like the top 35 rule, the lucky dog and now the 'wave around' are all ways to make 'the show' better.
Why does ESPN setup the triple Spilt screen for Caution, and then cut away to full screen of 48 team finishing their stop, even though they were part of the triple pit screens?
Makes no FREAKIN sense? Just stay in the triple pits until they are all moving and then go to the end pit road shot w/ the position gained/lost graphic.
David - Probrably not. Kyle is not a chaser and is no longer important to them since he is out of the top 5.
geez everytime I refresh, lots of tweets...I mean comments here.
Feels like 600 comments already :)
if it weren't for this entertaining blog, I would be watching DVD of Curb ur Enthusiasm, so I could get to my Mad Men season 1...from library
Restart..got tv sound on for a bit
88 off the pace...I am so depressed..transmission.
Who put the curse on Jr
:(
Can't believe he drives for Hendrick with the obtuse issues they have
Poor Jr fans. He just can't catch a break.
88's got issues
88 to pit road, unscheduled stop
video of Jr going slow with Audio of Junior saying he needs a transmision, THE BOOTH IGNORED IT!
88 won't stay in 4th gear
88 can't keep the car in 4th gear.
#88 on pit road...to the garage. Any of the pit reporters listening to the radio? Shannon? Jamie? Dave? Vince?
JPM on scanner: This is f-ing horrible!
WHY DO I WATCH THIS said...
video of Jr going slow with Audio of Junior saying he needs a transmision, THE BOOTH IGNORED IT!
October 17, 2009 9:13 PM
Simple -- he's not a Chaser. Didn't you know that only Chasers are running this race? ;)
@JD- Totally agree. I really feel sorry for all of the technical folks who have done this stuff for years and are masters of their craft. It must suck the life out of them being led by morons.
Like Schrader always says, the race isn't over yet!
the audio and video was on the ESPN broadcast where he said he needed a transimission, the production truck finally caught something, yet the booth ignored it completely, just so sad
JPM got hit in the right rear by Jeff Gordon during the restart.
Just realized that is no Junior channel on HotPass tonight.
Is Junior Nation going to protest this?
Rusty saving the day about the 42....it is SAD that the booth is silent
-sigh-
That Montoya replay was useless. It didn't show the contact that damaged the rear fender. If you are going to replay something under green flag racing, use the right replay.
Looks like they finally found it and interupted the race again.
Every ESPN analyst was wrong on that replay....every single one.
ok it was jeff gordon starting out slow that caused all the banging.
Thanks Charlie. Loved Brad saying the problem was running into the car in front when it's the rear fender that's the problem. great insight, Brad!
Anyone hear if Jr. is out, or are they fixing the tranny?
