Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Charlotte (7PM - ABC)
This is one of the biggest races of the Chase. Lowe's Motor Speedway is the home track for almost every Sprint Cup Series team. It's a night race under the lights and in primetime on ABC.
Allen Bestwick starts the night with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show at 7PM. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Handling the interviews are Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.
The pre-race show is thirty minutes and then the NASCAR on ESPN team takes the air. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will handle the live action.
Last night, ESPN started the night off with a great pre-race show for the Nationwide Series race. Bestwick handed the race off to announcer Marty Reid and the action began on a great note. The first thirty minutes consisted of wideshots of racing, aerial views of the speedway and interviews with drivers out of the race.
Then, ESPN turned the page and started down the road fans know all too well. Extremely tight shots of one or two cars. Recorded soundbites played back during the live race under the green flag. Bizarre oldies music blaring while the announcers threw to commercial. It was the same bad dream again for NASCAR fans.
Marty Reid and Dale Jarrett repeatedly told the producer and director that there was "three wide action further back in the pack." It did not matter. Stories like Mike Bliss and Dave Blaney carving their way through the field were poorly covered.
It was all Sprint Cup drivers all the time. It has been that way since Daytona with the exception of the short-track race this summer from Indy.
On this Saturday night it should be interesting to see if ESPN learns from the Friday night struggles or just repeats the same TV production pattern. One thing is for sure, we will all learn the answer to that together.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 600 of 756 Newer› Newest»But have we heard from any of the pitroad reporters about the crew member yet?
They are replacing the tranny on the 88
I have just about had it with this race coverage. Plenty of other stuff to do, all of it more fun. Night gang.
Sprint Screen on Hotpass during ABC commercial time is far better than anything ESPN has done so far tonight.
42 is interesting to listen to during this...some real chatter on his channel..
More JPM on scanner: "If I hit the fence can I fix it?" Spotter back to him: "No, that might knock it down onto the tire."
JPM about to go a lap down from fender damage
JPM just asked if he should brush the wall with the right rear to help make that fender better.
They said no, it make push in so much it cuts a tire.
Thanks rich.
lol JPM's radio is funny. but they are the slowest thing out there. telling juan when they pit they will fix it better than new
Hope Jr doesn't fall out of the top 35 in points.
@Sally, you're welcome
BSPN mentions Vickers but not hitting the 55 jackman?
R U KIDDING ME? time to turn on PRN again I guess
Just before Gordon passed JPM, this was JPM's spotter: "24 is in your mirror, he's the one that caused all of this."
Who told Jeff & Mark they could change the script on that last restart??
Just wondering - does NASCAR draw the short straw for director and producer assignments at ESPN?
I like the mentality of JPM, willing to scrape the wall to try and fix it! What happened to mikey?
JPM is good on twitter to.
I guess Michael Waltrip is 3 laps down for an unscheduled pit stop. Anyone know?
Time for Jacques Debris to make an appearance. JPM in the lucky dog spot.
Jr on jackstands wonderfull!!! Theres a lot of empty seats tonight that sucks. Go Kasey Kahne!!!!and JP
JPM now worried that he'll go 2 laps down, was told that he'll go 3 laps down if they pit and that they need a caution. JPM replies later to tell his crew to tell him when he's 10 seconds from going another lap down.
Sally, his jackman got hit on pitroad, so he had to wait for him to get back up and finish the stop..we don't know how injured he is from ESPN, but Mikey had to wait on his injured member and lost a lap, plus he had just went a lap down before his stop
Junior's on his way back to the track after transmission replaced.
If problems continue for the #42 and #5, Nascar will have a runaway for tne title very soon.
98 pit stop...good times.........
Oh, Lord help me, a crew-cam during green flag racing.
Pleeeeese make it stop!
They're playing with their toys again. Helmet cam for the pit stop for moving chicane Menard.
You a f,,,, kidding me full screen pit stop for the 98 during green flag. WTH
Must not make joke about Jr and a tranny... must not... :)
Cool, cover a pitstop fullscreen under green, and it is not relevant to the race.
Helmet cam during green flag racing. Someone needs to take their toys so they are forced to cover the race.
Thanks guys. If it weren't for you, I would have no idea what was happening in this race. Didn't realize Mikey had to wait for the poor jackman! Still no mention of it from the booth.
pure foolishness...we see the stinkin' tire change every single race...and every single time it is during green flag racing...does ESPN have something against showing green flag racing? they seem to try their best to do everything in their power to show everything but the race...and here we go with more green flag commercials.
At least helmet cam not a ham like last night's guy.
Bevo too funny
Where is Tony Stewart..it just dawned on me I am NEVER looking at the screen...just realized JPM car is BLUE...wow...there goes JPM tire..>SUCKS!!!!
wow...least he's by Pit road..that was HELPFUL but is he speeding???
That was impressive, JPM!
--KarenB
JPM just before his spin: "I'm going to start running the bottom, I don't care if I wreck"
Bet they penalize JPM for that
Man, this is rough.
Lost laps regardless. That's why Juablo didn't come in earlier.
Need a caution? Be the caution.
Jerry Punch - He would not get the lucky dog because he is not the first car a lap down, not because he brought out the caution.
I'm generally not smart enough to second guess a Cup crew chief, but JPM's just lost the race for him by leaving him out there that long in a wounded race car.
Good Lord!
Triple pits fail. Missed the battle off pit road and a lead change.
why didnt JPM just pit after spin?
tripp, they were going to lose a ton more laps by pitting. they are only 2 down now, green flag stop plus repairs is 5 laps easy.
brian pattie said screw the 24 and company, they &&&&ed it up for them anyways
@Tripp- Try the championship. He can kiss it goodbye now.
JPM didn't pit when he spun on pit road because his team was telling him to just go through on pit road to stay in front of the leader. NASCAR didn't see it that way, and told him to slow down to get behind the pace car.
He didn't clear the commitment cone during his spin? Bad call by Brian Pattie to leave him out. that's a shame.
Anon @ 9:35 - JPM was trying to beat the leader to the line to stay just 1 lap down. JPM didn't make it in time.
bevo, martinsville and talladega are still to go. no one is totally out of it yet i honestly don't think. if your over 100 out after dega, your toast.
JD: Football Choices Kansas/Colorado,SC/Alabama,Missouri/Oklahoma St, Stanford/Arizona, IU/Illnois....can follow the race on Twitter & DP
after pits:
11
24
17
48
9
16
WOAH! That could have been big if an occupied pti was there!
Day late dollar short! Thought I hit submit! Darn shiny distractions :)
It really is amazing that Twitter can reset the field as soon as the pit stops are done but ESPN/ABC can't do so until the green flag comes back out.
I think baboons in the control room would give us better race coverage. LOL
thanks
the montoya penalties mean nothing, they fell 2 laps down since they couldnt maintain caution speed when the caution came out. end of longest line, 2 laps down. tehey can get it back.
@david... That's why I said I'm not smarter than they are. But, a quick stop for some bearer bond and new Mr. Feelgoods could have made him faster for all those laps.
@bevo... probably right.
hey gang! i've read thru the comments while half-watching/listening to the race on tv and i have to say this:
i have NO freakin' idea what is going on.
none whatsoever.
it simply can't be this difficult to broadcast a race. it just can't be.
Sheesh....do they have to compare everything in NASCAR to a football game?
A fired up JPM could be lots of fun to watch. Gordon may want to watch his rearview.
MikeC
yes. Jr is down by 4 TDs.
so basically JPM should have pitted when he spun - been at end of longest line and two laps down - not much different
they messed up
Welcome back Red :)
tripp, it wouldnt have held up. they needed to put a whole new right rear on it which they did. tape would have cost them time and did zero to help the handling.
pattie did the right thing, juan got frustrated and spun out. he was panicking and made a mistake. i back brian pattie 100% here
Red you should have had more adult bev at dinner. Then it wouldn't matter. Oh by the way your driver broke a transmission. Sorry
@sally... do you think they'll show it? Sarcasm is on.
Do you suppose Teresa has a little diecast 88 car that she is systematically removing parts from?
If this race ended now it would be over as we passed half way mark
334 = 167 half way
@david... Someone in Mooresville wants you. (grin) I do see your point.
How man TD's is JPM down?
See, I can ask questions just like our play-by-play man!
Once he blew that tire, he fundamentally should have pitted.
Deal with the penalty or laps down later, but save the remaining three fenders.
sorry, I'm soo lost here, even w/Twitter & PRN. I can't cope w/it anymore. Will be watching some REAL racing Sun @ the Prelude to the Dream on Speed...2 EDT. Awful coverage as usual. Like hearing that JJ blew up on radio tho :)
Think Jr is wondering why he left DEI, at least there they were competitive and just had engines fail...
Looking at how the 42 has run, and what Ganassi has done for DEI's program has made the world of difference there...
Like Rusty told Jamie McMurray on 360 when he was gunning for the #2, the grass isn't always greener on the other side...
Newsflash! Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton are teammates. Thanks Jerry Punch.
David Hoots can be funny, "There's 2 experts there 'Shakin' & 'Shiverin'"
Sally, maybe Teresa is sticking pins in an #88 die cast car!
FINALLY the freaking Sheriff is going to press criminal charges against Jiffy Pop Boy's dad.
It was SO OBVIOUS on LKing when the boy said why he did not come out when parents called his name for 4 hours "cause you guys said it was for the show"!!! Can't believe Sheriff was so slow.
Ok, back to the race...I am trying LISTENING to the tv...but back to the radio. ..
Sophia stop changing channels
stick to topic
Looks like HMS changed some setup stuff in that 88, laptimes have picked up significantly
roflmao
JadeGurss No truth to the rumor Dale Jr. was seen floating from garage area in silvery helium balloon.
Yeah, Sally, and a JR doll that she sticks pins in.
I never realized until they started doing the Cup races this year, how much Jerry Punch uses the same words over and over.
Focus Sophia....focus.....hehe...
@pamm... That's last year's race. I heard Speed wouldn't have this year's.
The good news is that the Knoxville Nat'ls are on Speed at 3AM EDT. TiVo on.
@ David...if Jr. knew that Chip Ganassi would be running DEI instead of Teresa, he might well have stayed. ;-)
Just imagine how different this would be with JP in the infield and AB in the booth.
JJ blew up?? Really.
I had both TV and radio off listening to my cats adnoid problem while he sleeps behind me.
He's had it forever but is asleep against my head behind the recliner.
STILL more entertaining than BSPN's camera work.
Oops Adenoids
hey red, you did not miss anything, i could have had dinner also. we have no idea if there is racing. full screen pit stops, going to commerical immediatley on cautions. the list goes on. audio of broken trans for the 88 caught by the truck and 10 mins later the booth mentions it.
welcome back
Sophia - I had a strong feeling the balloon thing was a hoax. About time they placed charges. My friend's plane couldn't land thanks to the balloon.
hey gymmie! not certain if i'll make it to the end w/you guys but i'm gonna give it a shot!
@nrf: hey you! yeah, i came in just as he started falling back and then went to the garage. i think he'd be a whole lot happier if the car hadn't re-fired and he could get in his own car and drive home, ya know?
as for adult beverages: there just aren't enough in the entire L-dale to help ease the frustration.
back to catch up on twitter and then i'll try to focus on this mess and see if i can figure out what's happening by just watching the tv and not relying on a leaderboard and mrn.
what's the applicable cliche here" " a cockeyed optimist"?
Dang, ESPN must have momentarily taken over Google, I had to sign in again
expect super tight shots next week
Sorry JD
no more popcorn talk, I promise
;-)
OK Red, just keep shoveling. You're bound to find that pony.
Had Jr stayed, whose to say Chip would have been involved though?
The vicious circle of NASCAR...
The balloon thing, I avoided it all like a plauge for the reason.
13 knocked the repair metal off
ESPN News is advertising complete post-race coverage with live press conferences.
Yeah, everyone can see that debris!
@David- Let's see... change crew chiefs multiple times.. ditto pit crews... sponsors... owners... engines... even colors.
I think there might be a common denominator that I'm missing but I can't figure out what it might be ;)
what track is next week?
If the shots get any tighter, our TV's are gonna CHOKE!
oh and I am not changing the tv channels..reading TWITTER
They will have to find another corner panel because that one is to bet up. Do you mean they can run out on to the track and get that part and put it back on JPM's car if it wasn't bet?
Martinsville.
JPM's team not going to fix the fender that fell off, trying to get a wave-around to get back to 1 lap down, and then fight for the lucky dog. JPM isn't really buying it on the radio.
Pattie tells Juan stay out and get the wave around. Juan asks without a QP?! Pattie says right rear tire was going flat and there were multiple issues that run. They did straighten the original before putting the new piece on so they have sold Juan on staying out to wave around for only being a lap down.
This is going to be interesting.
Still no word if they have the stuff to fabricate a new RR QP or not
Denny Hamlin having engine isuues.
'pop and cracklin' sounds
@amol... I wouldn't either.
If Papis knocked the repair off the 42, why didn't they show it? Just askin'.

"ESPN News is advertising complete post-race coverage with live press conferences."
For NASCAR or NCAA Football?
bevo, i am staying away from that one.
Jr can drive but he is a major product of confidence, perhaps more than any other driver in the sport today. His best days were with Pops on the box, Pops doesn't want to be on the box. Jr wants someone like Pops. Tough calls to make.
Wow, Denny that is internal.
#11 to the garage
Yikes.. Pleeeeze. no TB viewer of dropped valve graphic again. we've seen it a dozen times already this year. crap.
Anon 9:51PM,
They dumped the Sunday stuff because ESPNEWS has an NFL review show on Sunday night.
They still do a post-race with coverage on Sat. because the college stuff is on the ESPN networks.
NOOOOOO!!!!!! Not that Tim valve train!!!!!! I hate espn
If ESPN is smart (doubtful), they'll keep a camera on JPM on the restart. He's saying the car is loose even during caution when he got his speed up during the wave-around.
OMG NOOOO can we please just reset the field.
I can see a lot of blue in those stands.
Dropped valve graphic for the hundreth time this year.
Don't care if it's under caution, why in the world did they show that valve animation...again!
That's right BSPN. Rub it in. Another implosion from a Chaser for JGR.
...and instead of a reset we get points as of now. Good lord!
hey lou! i'm wondering if you're regretting waking up for this?!? maybe if you'd stayed asleep, you could have dreamed a far more interesting race broadcast!
@sally: all i know is that it's a pretty big pile but i'm gonna keep trying to . . . ah, hell with it! i concede defeat: there's no pony here; just a big pikle of "stuff."
here we have the broken valve explanation for the 437th time this season and i don't even know who's leading right now!
#11- Hamlin got a valve playing up according to PRN. PRN is my only access to the race as BOTH of our stations down under aren't showing the race at all til tonight :(. Doesn't matter thou cos i betcha i'd be watching a funeral parade hosted by Jerry Punch. Hamlin confirmed now out even as i type. I wish radio was availible EVERY race.
From Foxtrax...Lap 172: Spotter Tab Boyd to Montoya: "You're going to have to drive a little bit different back here ..."
Reut's 11th. He needs to be sick more often.
I'm starting to appreciate the PRN guys' humor. Or maybe I'm desperate.
Why is the ticker showing the standings instead of the race order? Bueller? Bueller?
hate seeing JPM having such a rough night...don't agree with CC calls :-(
So did Jimmie Johnson blow up?
Because TV (and much of the media) think that nothing is as exciting as the chase. They also think that, if they refuse to cover anything but chasers, fans will be forced to love it...just because every other driver will disappear for the final 10 races.
If the race ended now....if Optimus Prime & Megatron start a fight to the death in the empty seats at Lowes...otherwise I think the race will continue.
BeatingADeadHorse...
NASCAR post-race press conferences and interviews on ESPN News after the race.
Hey, isn't Wendy V's hubby the engine tuner for JGR??
Soph JJ and Chad had a little snit. All better now. Not mechanical blow up just an emotional one.
Anon 10:02, will be there.
JD i thought he worked for DEI, or maybe that was a year or two ago..
JD Wendy's hubby on NW and possibly the 20 but definately not the 11
Oops! they accidently showed Brad K! Didn't mention that he's running 14th tho.
34th. Montoya
35th. Vickers
39th. Edwards
40th. Hamlin
Several chasers having a bad night. So, it can happen to any of them. It ain't over until Homestead. Don't give up on any of them (except maybe Vickers) ESPN.
#42 right rear tire smoke
Full screen pit stop for Cousin Carl who's not in contention. Why?
And I wonder how much Speed paid for the sign at the exit of pit lane. You see it in HD. Probably doesn't show up in SD.
Possible debris at the bottom of turn 3 per JPM's scanner, doubt it will get called a caution IMHO.
@newracefan
Aw, man, I wondered why I didn't hear more...just a snit.
tx for the answer :)
Now I'm back in high school, I usually tune out the bumper music but couldn't block that one.
Patrick said...

So Junior is running with the Chasers tonight.
Elaborating on my point a moment ago. Our two stations One HD and FOX Sports aren't showing this race live down here in Australia. Therefore i have no TV coverage full stop. You think ABC is disgraceful, our's is pitiful and yet we have a driver (47-Ambrose) competing and running well. We didn't get Nationwide live either. Not Happy at all.
JD,
Yes Wendy V's husband is a engine tuner for JGR, but think he works on the 20 team.
Hamlin is officially OUT now.
Beating Dead Horse,
Jr's actually still behind them, but it looks like he'll pass the #11 soon.
Tripp - It IS this year's Prelude to the Dream that's on tomorrow on SPEED ...
A first for me. Put the laptop on a chair in the bathroom & listened to the radio broadcast while I enjoyed a bubble bath. Enjoyed the race that way! The word pictures are fabulous.
one of you guys, can you send Jordan a link, just in case he wants to VIEW online.
Jordan, sorry you don't get the race in your country :(
STUPID QUESTION ON ESPN...asking DENNY how it feels to be doing so horribly. IDIOTS.
I had to turn on the tv when I saw DH interviewed...
ESPN is KING/QUEEN of obvious insipid questions
Run the commercials in a side by side format-a pair of commercials at once. Cuts the time in commercial in half:-)
PRN not much better interview.
Where's my MRN guys.
sigh
@6p01...OK. Then the TiVo guide must be wrong. It says its from 2008.
#42 car going to help get the trash off JJ's grill.
JP and DJ are just a mess. Andy is the star and working hard.
This is perhaps the worst Cup race these guys have done in three years.
From showing only the leaders to now following any story, not looking for racing and not updating any stories...it is just sad.
Crockett
That sounds like a GREAT IDEA! will keep that in mind next week.:)
temps climbing on 48 car...debris on grill.
New Leader: the #9 Kahne
Nor Cal, Juan has not said he would yet....
Anyone stumble across an update on that crew guy that got hurt?
JD: What is up with DJ?
Mission accomplished by the 42 on JJ's grill. #9 car wouldn't help--gee, I wonder why.
JD
You really need a cemetary plot picture for your next viewer sound off.
how can ANYBODY believe ESPN is NOT killing the sport between HORRIBLE camera work and blathering on tv with lack of info.
It's very sad
of course that debris would have been easier to see without the ticker on the bottom STUPID
Did TV just pass off the KK pass for the lead as live? FoxTrax had him leading before I saw the pass on TV. That's a bit manky.
Tripp, ESPN does it all the time. They think we're too stupid to know the difference. They don't think we're resourceful enough to find alternative sources of information!
It is hard to believe that Espn has no idea how to show a race.
I've said it before - ESPN needs a race strategist. Do like Jack Arute does on IRL races. Look at pit strategies, lap times etc. and let us know who's doing what and why.
You think Mville might get snowed out next weekend?
@tripp: "manky"? typo of some sort or a word i've never seen/heard?
Another 40 laps or so, we'll be to the point where DJ and Andy will handle the play-by-play amongst themselves and JP will chime in with the occasional statistic. At times tonight, DJ has sounded frustrated....not sure of the reason why, though.
I feel really bad for Dr. Punch. We are going to forget his years of great pit reporting. I can't help but think that Bestwick has pissed someone off in the Disney power chain. All Alan does is perform the way the fans want. Why, oh why isn't AB or Marty Reid NOT in the booth for these Cup races. Any other business would be restructuring their roles on a merit basis. It shouldn't matter that its nearing the end of the season or the middle of the chase. Build your team in the BEST way you can, when you can. NOW!
@Sally... I normally TiVo all the races. Probably why I never knew of the subterfuge.
Color me clueless.
Bevo that man is Larry Mac but he can't do everything.
Pit stops are stopping?
That's a new angle for covering a pit stop. Not good but new nevertheless.
@red... manky means disgusting or gross. I thought it appropriate.
i can't see the tv lap fonts in liv room
what lap are we on out of how many?
Please
Radio reported a bit ago, cars flashing across the start finish line. At least it wasn't "sailing".
sophia,
246 of 334
JD, why hasn't any of the networks tried to broadcast the race in the same way the radio guys do? -putting guys around the track and letting them call the race with the director following their lead with the video. it seems to me that that would lend itself to some exciting broadcast moments.
So what are the chances they reset the field after all these stops. Slim and none is my guess
I must love pain, i am still watching full screen green flag pitstops. ouch.
@ Tripp...Aha! you get to skip all the commercials. Saves you a lot of time.
More helmet cam toys for inconsequential pit stops.
Again with the helmet cam. Is there something magical about that camera that they keep using it? I just don't see it.
@sally... and I can skip the boring racing bits too!
Thanks Patrick.
too lazy to change to bedroom tv which is larger. enjoying recliner with heat on back and kitten on back of chair :)
Curious to know the attendance at the track.
Is is TRUE attendance at this track is usually not good?
Newracefan - they could have done what they did yesterday, do a field run down just before green flag stops. Which then met nothing.
It's like the gopher cam. Some producer somewhere who knows nothing about racing decides that it gives a 'unique' perspective of racing. Too ignorant to realize it is guaranteed to piss off race fans because, like most of the ;perspective' shots, it totally ignores the racing. Focusing on the trivial is their strong point.
@buschseries... I think it's ADD in the truck. Can't stand to use the same cameras showing the same cars all the time. It's not about the racing, it's all about the pretty pictures.
@Jordan
send me an IM and I'll help you.
West Coast Kenny
Alameda, California
@ Tripp...so, you watch the first 5 laps, restarts plus 5 laps, then the fianl 10 laps? All the highlights in 30 minutes or less?
;-o
Don't guess we'll get to hear the radio of Montoya where he's complaining that NASCAR isn't throwing enough fake debris cautions
Brad K up to 11th? With Tony Jr. as cdrew chief? Cool.
Buschseries61
i kinda dig the crew helm cam.
But
#1 The angle of the camera is off. Should be tilted down a bit further so you see what the tire carrier is actually looking at, not 5 inches above that.
#2 It should be on a jack man, or changer, so you see some action.
Possibly on a catch can man, but only show it if hes doing a adjustment.
@sally... Sort of. I'll skip the spots but I'm doing other stuff online or working. I'll look up when I hear something interesting. If I don't hear something interesting in 5 or 10 laps I'll fast forward 50 laps. That's my ADD.
