Live Blogging The Nationwide Series Race From Texas (12PM ET - ESPN2)
This is the weekend where the reality that the season is ending makes itself known. Lots of stories are playing out in a very personal way.
That is certainly true in the Nationwide Series, where sponsors have been hard to find and many teams and drivers that started the season are no longer racing. Now, there are three races remaining and eyes have turned to 2010.
The standard pre-race starts the day with Allen Bestwick, Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty in the ESPN Infield Pit Studio. Then, the fun begins.
ESPN brought in Marty Reid to handle some of the final Nationwide Series races. His happy and exciting presence has been perhaps the only bright spot for the network. A tired Dale Jarrett and a frustrated Andy Petree will be alongside of Reid today.
Last Sunday, Jarrett and Petree found themselves waist-deep in the play-by-play role as Jerry Punch was rendered completely helpless by the single file racing. Petree was the most aggressive, interrupting Punch repeatedly to re-focus the attention to the racing on the track instead of Punch's extended question and answer sessions.
Now Jarrett and Petree will be pushed back into the traditional role of color analyst when they work with Reid. The excitement will be provided, the racing action will be described in full and it will be up to the two analysts to switch back into providing perspective, not a race call. That dynamic should be interesting to watch.
ESPN's Producer and Director seem to be mad at the fans. As one poster said, they seem to be "mailing it in." Since the Nationwide Series has a diverse group of drivers, the stories are always changing. ESPN has kept the cameras squarely on Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards with a smattering of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski.
The stories of the Nationwide regulars are routinely ignored. The reality of the racing on the track is ignored and the focus remains on the Sprint Cup drivers in the field. This has been a source of frustration for Reid, who has several times called out on the air for the TV truck to show the racing.
This race in Texas may continue to show the tension that is clearly in the air between NASCAR and ESPN. After the rare public criticism of ESPN directly by NASCAR, how the TV team reacts will be interesting to see. Jarrett specifically was singled out by NASCAR.
Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Dave Burns are reporting on pit road. This track is fast and the reporters will not probably be seen on camera during the race unless there is a red flag. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Garage. His updates had better be well-timed with accidents and passes happening on the TX track in a flash.
The weather is great and the NASCAR Media Group TV compound has been making great pictures all day long. The overall TV presentation should come down to choices by the Producer and Director.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 284 of 284Wow, NW race here in Phx in an hour and 10 minutes? Thats news to me!
I read that about JoLo's granddaddy wonder why ESPN isn't exploiting it? Maybe they are saving it for tomorrow so one of the bwins can ask a how do you feel question. -P
@ ri88, different opinions. Family's Ok with it. Rather see him in the afterlife rather than MJ.
I love Kevin's sarcasm.
@ ri88, I bet you're right.
Hey, JWT has been behaving himself today.
Six--yuppers...hehehehehehehehe
David--you should :)
I didn't hear about JoLo's grandpa :(
I didn't know that about Joey's grandfather either....condolences to the family. :-(
Long time coming, long illness.
DJ and Andy are making this race too serious, that is why I liked Randy and Rusty. They made it fun and gave each other grief.
Maybe RC gave JWT a lecture about not wrecking if he's going to drive for RCR?
Will they have the 3 Rs in the booth next year for the NW races Sgt Schultz?
Gymmie, if you've ever seen Ride of Their Lives, watch for the Morgan Shepherd clip of him saying "Come here punk!" then going to chase after the guy
These EX commercials HONESTLY should all be rated R. Same with the prescription stuff.
But Dot... he knows nothing!
to be fair that RAB racing stuff...well...SUCKS!
Happy not happy!!!!
Wow. Did he said the F word, more than once?
Wow! Kevin just sounded EXACTLY like Jr there.
apparently 'fricking' passes FCC regs
wonder how long it will be until a driver comes into the pits after a race and gets into a fight...with his OWN pit crew?
it should ri. The networks don't have to air these. Lord knows if I was driving I would have an R or X rated channel with the language at times...
JD, recall when Ricky Rudd owned his own team and fired a couple pit crew guys after the final stop of a Marty-ville or Wikes race? Had a guy when I was going to school tell me that story. KH could do that easily. Why fight? lol
u keep hoping DJ I'm not too sure.
@JD that fight might be today...
If it wasn't for bad luck, Annett wouldn't have any...
I don't blame Harvick for being upset...has to be so upsetting when pit stops worsen things. :(
Just sounding off...like Mikey says that button is your connection to the world.
Steven Wallace....again...what luck
god poor Rusty. Every week he has to put up with this like a good soldier live on tv.
Well, it had to happen. Steve can't go an entire race w/o wrecking. Let's here from Rusty.
Annett must feel like the next Junior. Luck-wise, that is.
Stevie Wallbanger strikes again.
Five Hour Energy pill just ran out.
"hear". Dang desktop.
@ dead horse, you're killing me.
Kez will cause the next wreck. He's been pretty wild on the restarts.
Wouldn't it be fun to have another last lap pass of Kyle? With these pit stops, there may be hope! (Sorry Dave)
Sometimes it's Steves fault, other times not..but he does wreck a lot poor guy.
I hope he is racing because he really WANTS to and not feeling forced due to family history, you know?
We are not done with cautions yet.....IMHO.
Chrissy may prove to be the best racer in the Wallace family.
Maybe Happy will get UNhappy with special K. That would be fun
Who would want to work for Happy after hearing him on his radio?
AND pops throws brad under the bus love it
Gosh ... She said "Crew Chief Pops" ... Wholey Moley!!
WOW! Pops just throw BK under the bus or just painful truth! :)
@Dead Horse, I agree 110% she has her dad's quiet drive not that flashy stuff like Rusty
What did Pops say?
--KarenB
What happens to the fball game if we run late? I already mentioned a short post race. Maybe not one now.
What'd Pops say?
@ KarenB, that Kez is the worst restarter.
Just a short post race Dot...
@karen
Pops said brad if horrible on restarts..and BK claiming sun was in his eyes..can't stay in the right place.
Eh, Pops pointing out fact.
well at least Shrowdy won't have anyone to blame but himself.
@David--yes I have seen it :)
Weed could have my tires on his car and still lead/win the race.
It makes me laugh every time.
Shrub-a-dub-dub....
The more impressive part about this potential 4 in a row is the sheer dominance they have had in the races they've run.
Kyle doing this gets him a bad rap, but its no different than when Mark Martin did this very thing in the 90's
@ David, the difference is that people like Mark Martin.
So its just a double standard.
Wow, Gator's car is junk.
marty has a great way with words. Not areodynamicly sound. love it
Marty is trying, but this team is just not meshing.
You can really see the camber on the front tires with Allgaier's fron end missing. Better than a TB segment!
ZZZzzz zzzzzzzzz
Well David knows I like Weed, so I'm loving this. He's not the only closet Shrubber.
Shrub-a-dub-dub TWO in the tub!!!!!
Mears, helluva drive!!
Townley finishes a race with a car intact!
Dang it again. Congrats David.
can't believe I watched part of this race.
AWKWARD camera work at the finish line??????
That made no sense. We needed to see the lead lap cars finish.
Glad to have Marty, but if they do the same thing with JP tomorrow, whew...
Might just have to go to the NW race next week too!
Buckshot Townley has a ride for next year so he doesn't have to drive over his head now.
Maybe someone at the speedway had a camcorder and will post the complete finish on you tube.
@ dead horse, you are too funny.
Time to take advantage of the nice weather and Rain X my car windows. Hope the race tomorrow isn't quite so dull.
Well tomorrow I can listen on radio..even if it is PRN ..I shall miss my MRN boys and their dulcet tones.
Flipped over from my football game to catch the next football game on ESPN2 expecting postrace and instead caught the last few laps. What the heck was up with that finish line?! I don't think I even figured out who was in the top 10, much less where they finished.
And anyone think they might actually do some postrace? On Classic, maybe?
1 reg in the post-race thus far...
OMG Brad still B****ING about motor?!
They run a danged smaller spacer than you!
Thanks everyone, see you tomorrow afternoon for a pre-race and then live race blog.
Have a great Saturday!
JD
Wow, for eh seats I could do the Truck and NW races at PIR for $23. Dunno what parking runs tho
@ David, they charge for parking? They don't here @ LVMS. You should go anyway. You can be our at race reporter. Even after the fact.
Nice run for Casey :)
but Dot...won't that give David the 'curse'?
@ ri88, I was thinking the same thing. And, I was going to say that maybe he would curse Weed too. But then I find out you like Weed (driver, lol) too. I can't win.
Perfect timing Dish Network has. The victory lane interview starts, the clock clicks 3:30 and I get blacked out football coverage here in Atlanta.
At least it was Kyle, I pretty much got a handle on his interviews.
Pretty good showing by the people at the track for ESPN. This is the first full race I've watched AND listened to in months. The pit reporters did a little better than usual but ALL 4 still need a little work.
Well Charlotte doesn't charge for parking either. I don't believe Daytona does either. But I've heard of tracks that do. Haven't been to PIR since '99
Free parking at PIR btw
Is PIR an ISC track? Maybe that's the difference.
It is now. Thats how they got the 2nd date.
Today was one of those broadcasts that was tough to gauge from since the competition was strung out. Marty did his best at the end but the full B team with the 3 R's is much better than this mix. Seems like the B reporters are too.
@Glenn--THAT'S what happened. I was like OK we've been watching BSPN for the last 4 hours how all of a sudden do we not have access. Crazy has DTV here in TX :)
JD, Love the picture. Thank you.
