Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series In Fontana (2PM ET - FOX)

The popular saying is that the season actually starts in Fontana. Daytona is a unique experience, but the Auto Club Speedway is the type of track that teams will be seeing a lot over the course of the year.

For the NASCAR on FOX team, the real TV season may also start in Fontana. Daytona brings with it a level of media hype and expectations that are rarely met. Throwing in a pothole and several hours of red flag conditions did not help matters.

Chris Myers starts the day from the Hollywood Hotel with Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond inside. No clue if the A-Team van made the drive from Daytona to Fontana. This pre-race hour is hit and miss. Myers is sometimes so over the top that it turns into amateur hour. This early in the season, perhaps things will be different.

Waltrip makes the transition to the broadcast booth late in the show to join Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds for the race. Joy is the consummate professional, but found it tough to get a word in last week. A very tired Waltrip simply rambled for hours.

Larry McReynolds continues to supply outstanding information and stats during the races. What he has ended is his independent thinking. Once a tireless advocate for change, McReynolds has decided to stick with facts rather than incur the wrath of NASCAR as he did last season. This has changed the dynamic in the TV booth.

While this trio has fun in the relaxed atmosphere of cable TV while on SPEED, they high-profile NASCAR on FOX telecasts are very different. Aimed at a different audience, they result in more theatrics from Waltrip and more gimmicks from the TV director.

Keep an eye today on the use of in-car cameras. Several times at Daytona, key moments in the race were hidden from the TV viewers because the FOX telecast was showing the in-car view from a roof or a bumper. On this big and wide track, it should be interesting to see if the director chooses to cover more of the action with wideshots.

In Daytona, FOX tried to use a TV effect with four video boxes on caution flag pitstops. The results were not good. It's hard to get all that arranged as cars slip onto pit road and then roll off with different pit strategies. Catching the race off pit road is going to be a priority for this telecast.

FOX has the best pit road reporting team, they just need the opportunity to offer more updated information. There is no RaceBuddy today and no live Tweets from pit road. It will be up to the pit road gang to tell the stories of the teams on this huge track.

Rain is in the area, but folks are optimistic that the race will be run today. This post will host your comments on the NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race Fontana, CA. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

well a commercial every 10 laps is not going to make me stay and watch this race

Sure it is, if nothing else you can just pick apart the broadcast as usual.

As DW said the other day, we've had start and park forever. It is just unfortunate that more people do it now than used to.

But would you rather hundreds more be out of work and unemployed than at least doing some sort of work?

It's easy to say do away with it, but there is more to it than just an easy paycheck.

red said...

wow! so now we're getting B&Ws of ontario speedway in order to avoid showing us the lack of fans in the stands.
and then DW just flat out drops it as fast as possible.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I agree with Anon, hope this track gives away a date. Can't believe they took one away from Darlington to make all this work....

Martin Vincent said...

Nemechek is back on track, probably going to pick up a couple of spots and park again.

Anonymous said...

Yeah John - how does changing the camera views to avoid showing empty stands affect us?

Anonymous said...

Dave Blaney now behind the wall. Prism Motorsports got a nice Daytona paycheck with the #55. They got 2 cars into this race and parked both. It isn't like they are a single car team with no support either. MWR cars and technology. They can buy tires. They just abuse the system.

The #09 parks in Cup to run the #1 in Nationwide. The #87 parks in Cup to run the #87 in Nationwide. Prism takes money and does not give back to the sport.

Kyle Busch loose off

Montoya, too tight

Anonymous said...

I used to think that Nascar should implement a 107% rule similar to what they used to have in F1 to address the backmarkers.

Problem is that now the backmarkers qualify faster than the top teams because of so many impound races.

The Loose Wheel said...

Im with BuschSeries, there are teams that do it for good reason, but some who abuse. PRISM is the abuser. To be fair though that "Good check" from Daytona went to the 55 running all day long which cost well over 100 grand to do.

Haus14 said...

tower is talking about it

GinaV24 said...

thanks, Toby. I appreciate your affirmation. Actually I flip channels back and forth - if they are in commercials, I don't stay

Anonymous said...

It's almost unanimous among fans, competitors, media that this track is held in the lowest esteem among all. The competition stinks, no fan support, no drama.

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon: only 3 impound races anymore. Both Talladega races and the Daytona July race. The rest of the season has no impound rules

Haus14 said...

26 is back in race

red said...

jd, foxtrax back up.

The Loose Wheel said...

There is your bogus competition caution.

I hate this crap.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I'm a reality fan! I believe it is the role of the TV crew to just show us the reality and let us judge.

Nowdays, some TV folks want to "craft the message" as if they are part of the sport.

It makes me nuts. Like Rick Allen not saying that 20 of the 36 trucks in a race started and parked.

Amazing. Same thing with not showing the stands.

GinaV24 said...

there's the caution!

Haus14 said...

and caution is out "debris" in turn 1

GinaV24 said...

David, isn't Richmond still an impound race?

Martin Vincent said...

Are Nemechek and Said going to try to outscore each other?

Anonymous said...

And DW saying NOBODY left Daytona after the pot hole red flags..

Spider said...

JD, be our Myth Buster for this myth or truth.
Does the TV contracts specify a full field for the televised races? If so is there a monetary penalty on NASCAR if there are less than 43 cars?
Maybe that explains the S&P's and NASCAR looking the other way.

Anonymous said...

@David

Good catch. I used impound incorrectly. I was meaning to say about the use of qualifying-only engines, which I believe would drop you to the back of the field.

Scott said...

Yes, this race is saved for the time being.

Sally said...

issed a pass for the lead while at commercial. Guess this is going to be another of those 'race by replay only' ones.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD when did 20 trucks start and park? I think they had about 12 or 13 before but never 20.

I do agree though, just show us the race and the stands and everything, stop trying to dress up the "show"

Anonymous said...

Reality ? Most all the media caves in to NASCAR. David Poole did not and now only Monte Dutton is left. The suits in NASCAR weild a powerful sword with the TV coverage.

Anonymous said...

If start and park had really been around in the late 1990s, DW would have been a perfect candidate for it.

Remember the year he was supposedly sponsored by Speedblock/Builder's Square but they actually never paid him so he had to sell the team to the Tabasco sauce car?

Daniel Christopher Vining said...

Fox missed the caution. ESPN may have broken from commercial for it... maybe not for a simple debris caution though. What do ya think?

Anonymous said...

S&Ps just hurt the teams that actually want to race the full distance, putting all of those jobs in jepoardy.

Lou said...

why can we not come out of commerical to see the yellow and play the commerical later? This is commericial tv and we the viewers, the bottom line pay the bill. the sponsors just redistribute our dollars. duh.

GinaV24 said...

I agree -- this should be reality TV, not PC TV. Just show me what is really happening instead of feeding me selected bites.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 4:03PM,

You sure only Monte Dutton is left?

JD

Anonymous said...

Oops - JD too!!

Anonymous said...

JD - are you still a regular on any Sirius shows?

The Loose Wheel said...

Gina it was until last year. It is no longer an impound race.

Yes, qualifying only engines are expensive though. 60 grand a pop, and require a rebuild after every attempt. It is not more profitable for a S&P to get that unique with their attempt to go fast. The tricks only go so far, PRISM really does have alot of MWR stuff to play with, and odds are when we get to the 600 you will see an MWR sponsor of some sort on the 66 car so they can run all day much like last year.

If these cars had major sponsors though, I would freak out but with blank panels its hard to say...

I remember hearing on SIRIUS before about an owner that had a multi-million dollar sponsor and he would put only 20% into the team, pocketed the rest.

This is an expensive business with cars that run 90,000 per chassis/body, 50 grand for an engine, 2 grand for a set of tires, 10,000 just to fill out an entry blank, 3,000 just for an inspection fee, etc. blank panels = you run out of money fast.

That LAME CRANK IT UP GRAPHIC is makign me dizzy and more annoying than DIGGER? WTH was that junk on the screen for????????????????????????????

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon, remember when Childress and Hendrick put cars in the field late in the year that would drop out 10 laps in? LaJoie, Bonnett, etc. Just so the championship would get sealed up easier

red said...

"check your kill button." ya THINK, dw! you are no longer racing and you need to stop "telling" drivers what they should be doing. did you not see him check his kill button right after they cut oi the in-car?

Anonymous said...

WOW that replay showed all the empty seats !

GinaV24 said...

That's good news, David. My brother and I used to go to Richmond (before it was an impound race), then I got tired of wasting an entire Saturday with NO cars on the track to see the race.

The Loose Wheel said...

Gina, not sure if its one of those "modified" impound races though where it uses the appearance of an impound race but they can adjust the cars after qualifying. I know Atlanta uses that format and I think Chicago is going to use that format this year as well.

Anonymous said...

Wow. The turn 1 grandstands are empty. You could individually count the people in that section.

GinaV24 said...

David, that's a good point. So hard these days to figure out what the deal is with each track. Last year when we went to Richmond we drove down in morning from NJ and only had to kill 1/2 a day. Driving back at night AFTER the race was a real tough haul though.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nope, Sirius apparently has a different agenda...and I was a free interview!

The Loose Wheel said...

Expect to see more tracks run a 2 day format Gina. If it is a NW/Cup double they will probably run it all in 2 days if the schedule allows it since it saves the track operators money being open the extra day.

Shame for Martin

boyd said...

This is kind of painful on TV. Cali friends at track say they have plenty of room to stretch out before the racing starts.

MikeC said...

I remember the one year they used the excuse they sold the race out, but everyone was out visiting the souvenir trailers. LOL....yeah, people are going to spend $50 to $100 a pop on tickets to visit the souvenir trailers instead of watching the race.

Lots of camera time spent on lead car all by itself. Guess there isn't anything else going on. Bot, they changed that camera shot that showed the empty turn 4 stands.

Martin Vincent said...

@David - I think I remember Dave Blaney's paint scheme being one of Ambrose's cars. If I'm not mistaken, it's his Bush's Best Baked Beans from last year.

Also, Aric Almirola's car looks a lot like an old #39 Haas Automation car from Stewart-Haas Racing.

Newracefan said...

Anonymous said...

David - I agree they could be in trouble. I'm confident Kvapil will keep the #34 in the top 35. Conway is not ready for Cup, but he has $. Problem is, once he is out of the top 35 he will have a hard time getting back in. The future of the #38 depends on the top 35 I guess. I could see Gilliland in the #37 if Conway can't get it done.

boyd said...

That kind of pit interview we need more of this y;ear.

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Do you think Danica would have put more butts in the stands for this race? I doubt it.

@Jonathan - Dale Jr. said the Amp Energy Juice was really nothing more than orange juice with a little kick to it. He sounded more interested in what it would taste like with alcohol mixed in.

The Loose Wheel said...

MV, its not even about the top 35. I think it was stated the 38 may not run the full schedule or will start and park at some point if needed. With the 82 running much better, 71 running decent, etc. we know a certain number of folks will fall out. the 38 and 37 being the first 2. Conway has money though. Doubt they will pull him unless they want to lose their $$$. They might shuffle him and TK tho

Haus14 said...

The Loose Wheel said...

Hats off to Bliss for still running, and on the lead lap without anything on those quarterpanels. Would have been perfectly understandable if they started and parked today after a horrible speedweeks. Losing 2 cars, engines, tires, etc. Cost them probably exactly what they made and are probably looking at being in the hole quick if today doesn't go well.

Haus14 said...

Fox Trax still not working correctly...continues to freeze

GinaV24 said...

@MV - maybe conway could use some extenze to help with that problem

Martin Vincent said...

@David - No harm! I thought they said all 3 cars would run full-time. I'm thinking "that sponsor" is financing all 3 cars because Long John Silver's and Taco Bell are Bob Jenkins' own money. I think Gilliland can keep up with Kvapil, but Conway certainly won't.

The Loose Wheel said...

MV, I always wondered why Taco Bell/LJS was on those cars. Kind of a fall after the glory days with Truex in Busch. But looking at those cars, all 3 run the same speed. Conway is the slowest because he is the least experienced but all 3 cars have been lapped today. Only reason Kvapil isnt lapped is because he took a wave around

boyd said...

Thanks for the full field run down. Nice to know when they get stringed out, you can't show all the cars.

Newracefan said...

Still silence on the 48 for Trackpass, this sucks!

Anonymous said...

This track has killed all the Daytona excitement. There has to be a change. The problem is - where would NASCAR move the date to? Kansas Speedway was rumored. But right now it is 32 degrees with light snow in Kansas City. The only reasonable idea I have is Homestead, another ISC track.

Martin Vincent said...

@David - The FRM cars may not be fast, but if they run all day and finish 35th or better, they'll likely stay in the guaranteed spots. As long as start-and-park teams and attrition gives them a 35th place finish, they're in the good.

The Loose Wheel said...

BuschSeries, why not do some shuffling and make Vegas race #2, Phoenix race #3 and move Fontana to a mid April date

i wish the cup race was as exciting as yesterdays race. Is it because theres an xtra 100 laps??

Sophia said...

what I find ludicrous is starting with the DAYTONA and going to "this" track on the west coast.

Insane planning, too much travel for haulers & other track/tv crew workers. I guess to make things easier for those traveling & an itinerary more conducive to lesser travels/ moving stuff would make too much sense.

But the second race really should be closer to the home of the sport in this Yankee's opinion. :)

@Johathan...no, it's because there aren't enough cautions to keep the cars within striking distance of each other. One of the problems with these nice flat, wide tracks. Yawwwwwwn.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, I think it is a factor of this being a different car than the N'wide style. This track nearly always produces a high speed parade. There has actually been more close racing at different times than I expected. Mostly on restarts, but still.

yep, I'm thinking spaghetti.

Haus14 said...

Sally said...

Sophia, I agree! with all the 'concern' about saving the teams money, crisss crossing the country several times a year is never mentioned. Do away with testing instead?

Jonathan said...

Martin Vincent said...

Not even 4 minutes of coverage since the last set of commercials. :(

GinaV24 said...

I, too, have wondered why they don't just take a hard look at the schedule and realign things in a way that makes sense by weather and where the tracks are located. It makes sense to me.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, surprisingly teams have found ways to make the west coast swing work. Vegas being race #3 helps because the teams stay west for both races. SHR hauler driver said on SIRIUS the other day that a 2nd driver drives everything out to California, then after California they go to the old South Point Racing shop, send a 2nd hauler hauling all 4 Vegas cars for Stewart and Newman out with the primary driver and they do the swap out there. It saves having to go back and fourth back and fourth.

It seems bizarre after having Rockingham be the 2nd race for so long but with the way the weather has been all around the east coast and mid west can you really blame NASCAR for scheduling it like this?

#78 on pit road.

jd, media interest does not = fan interest.

media disgustedly commented on how swamped danica's swag wagon was, swarmed her car on pit road, wouldn't leave her alone but . . .
she finishes 31st or somesuch and they get piseed off that she doesn't come out of the hauler to speak with them right away after the race.

can't have it both ways. either she IS the story & her every move needs to be covered and reported upon or she's a rookie in the sport and isn't required to talk to media after the race without it being called a tantrum on her part.

i know which side of that equation i'm on.

I think I have been quite active here, in fact... this audience has been more engaging to me than twitter, which I have promoted heavily. Go figure.

I'll find another avenue to pass along personal links.

Hey GinaV24, just so I'm clear... Are you pulling for J. Gordon?

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Sorry! :(

NBC just started their "miracles on ice" 1980 USA Hockey review.

MRN is now touting the "wonderful" racing at California before the restart. LOL they must have got told to put in a plug!

Daniel Christopher Vining said...

I wonder what it would be like if FOX replaced DW with Mickey?

man them clouds look dark, watching from jrs on board on Hotpass man looks brutal

Sally said...

If they've had the best racing ever at Cali I sure haven't seen in on my TV screen!

Daniel your a strange one lol

Larry - The best racing in California we have seen in some time? Really? A man named Marty Reid said that yesterday, except he was actually telling the truth.

GinaV24 said...

DCV - yep, he's been my guy since he raced sprinters. I take a lot of heat for my choice, but I'm not changing horses now.

Thank you Johnathan!

No prob, it's all good. Just ready for this to be over. Never thought I would say that.

Dan - mickey mouse? LOL

No offense meant earlier but we do get people who sure do sound like Foxer's plants

I'm a Kyle Busch fan myself. Thought McMurray was gonna be the guy to beat today. I think I was wrong in that assumption. Looks like Kyle has a great shot though!

The whole idea of adding a Weather Scout to the telecast was to keep viewers updated on the weather.

So, where is he?

The Loose Wheel said...

I actually think this has been a great California race. Gordon has passed a ton of guys, Biffle too, Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Stewart.

Jonathan said...

GO Jeff pass Jimmie!!!

whoa, those clouds look scary bad -- and not a notice of that from the booth, even w/the camera showing it in the background.
oblivious, much? or just pretending it doesn't exist?

Martin Vincent said...

@Gina - Maybe he meant Mikey Waltrip! He's no better than his brother.

Jonathan said...

Burton and Busch here we go this is getting good

GinaV24 said...

LOL -- oh my bad! I didn't even think about Mikey. No, that would be awful.

Darn, the 24 is going to have to pit and that may screw up this great run.

DC- looks like you are right about KyBu - he's been really strong on restarts and hard to beat when he gets out front

As said last week, 500 miles is too long a race for TV based on todays viewers, especially at this track and maybe at any track.

Martin Vincent said...

@red - Weather looks OK according to Weather Channel's website

The report from the #18 pit, its going to rain when they have to pit. So 20 laps folks
