Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series In Charlotte (5PM - FOX)
The second half of the motorsports doubleheader is next with the Sprint Cup Series racing in Charlotte. This is the last race for the NASCAR on FOX team.
Chris Myers will start the coverage from the Hollywood Hotel. Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond will be alongside. It is a one-hour version of the pre-race show. This has been one of the parts of the FOX coverage that has struggled. So often, the real stories of the race are not told and the hype, promo and sponsor agendas are put before the NASCAR news.
It should be interesting to see what content FOX chooses to include today. There are NASCAR stories like the Gibbs team feud, the Memorial Day festivities involving the military and the FOX agendas of promoting other sports programming.
Mike Joy will end his TV run with this telecast, but Darrell Waltrip will join SPEED's RaceDay show and Larry McReynolds will move to the infield for the TNT races. Waltrip will fill-in for Kyle Petty over the next six events.
FOX has the strongest team of pit reporters. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Dick Berggren and Matt Yocum have been once again underused this season. Instead of being a big part of the overall telecast, Waltrip and McReynolds have again been featured.
If the FOX director begins this telecast with tight shots of one or two cars, the viewers will head for the exits. 600 miles needs a presentation that makes sense for five hours. That is not random shots of cars while the announcers play catch-up.
No one knows what will unfold in Charlotte between potential weather issues, feuding teammates and COT's with aero issues. The role of TV is to tell the stories as they unfold and let the TV viewers experience the race as if they are at the track.
Good luck to all of the NASCAR on FOX team with their final telecast of the season.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 450 Newer› Newest»MV, Vince and I aren't talking about the edges, we are talking about the wasted empty space in the center of the screen that is filled with useless graphic emptiness. It drives me nuts how much space they waste. HD or SD it doesn't matter. I am a SD viewer and I still think they waste a TON of space.
I'm surprised Conway is keeping up the pace. At this rate, he'll only be 6 laps down at the checkered.
If I had a nickel for every time they showed more than three cars, for more than three seconds, I'd have almost a dollar.
Yeley still in. Montoya took longer because they broke the transmission
There not showing the race. They come up with a story about a car, the camera goes to that car, then another idea and they go to that car.
They should show the racing and talk about that.
I think part of the reason for the delay is because of the SportVision popup bubbles that do the place, speed etc, and another part is the satellite transmission from the track to the network, and then from the network to your local station. If you have Cable, Satellite or Fios, you have to add time for their processing as well. If you have a DVR in line, that will sometimes add a bit of a delay as well as you are actually watching off the hard drive, regardless of whether or not you are recording the show.
@David - You mean at the bottom of the screen? I guess they have to keep picture ratio to at least what SD would be, otherwise they'd be showing picture boxes that are square. If they used the full width of the HD picture, they could probably fill the whole screen vertically.
The new oversized TV's that are in development are going to be HD, but will allow you to put a computer, PIP or any other video stream on the same screen and resize it.
That way, you can have FOX, MRN radio, Twitter and TDP on the same screen.
MV, the split between Kyle Busch and the pit stops is what I am referring to. There was a good 20-25% of the screen wasted with idle worthless graphics
This may be the end of Yeley's run, he was getting pulled back into his pit stall.
OsbornK -- boy wouldn't that be just a wonderful change? Tell us the story of what the camera is showing? Or just the story of the race.
A whole bunch of picture in picture.
That is all I need.
I think they do the different size boxes to try and draw your eye to a place, but still give you the option of watching the other box.
Yeley still on track MV 3 laps down
I am okay with having them be different sizes, but what ever happened to running a main image full screen then having a box pop up with whatever PIP you want? Or even for green flag stops and overview of pit road with a triple split showing 2 stops and the leader would work too...
JD, that sounds like fun. I'd be able to do it all on the same screen instead of having to use the computer and the TV -- the daly planet on TV would be great.
The FOX affiliate in the Dallas market decided to stop showing this race in HD. Yuck.
well I am seriously hoping that the 24 car gets better during the night hours because they have not been setting the world on fire so far today. Ugh.
Geez, how many movie promo's are we going to get tonight? New drinking game. See a movie promo, take a shot. You'll be blasted by the end of the race! If ya make it that far.
The idea is to combine computer, radio, telephone and TV onto one screen that could be controlled easily.
Sounds good.
Vince, I have a half a bottle of Crown Royal to go....I accept your challenge! lol
You know you are old when you remember the other A-team.
Watch it JD!!
Doesn't the weather channel in HD show more information on the side panel. If you have a SD you don't even know that other box is there.
Jimmie feels he only hit with right rear tire, he is very upset with D-Ham too
How about if you remember the original A-Team but never watched it??
@anonymous 7:54 - Think it has to do with the pop-up storms we're having. Pretty good cell over Cedar Hill.
DW says the 48 isn't happy with the 11? Really well the 11 should actually be the one that's mad. Hamlin did his best to avoid him.
And I don't normally defend Hamlin.
@Charlie - Speed shows stats in the "margins" during Race Hub. SD viewers don't even know it's there.
I just can't watch this race anymore. The Dallas Fox station doesn't care about NASCAR fans. They wouldn't refuse to show a NFL game in HD.
18 livid.
Chad sarcasticly calm
I won't be sad if somebody other than the 18 or 48 wins tonight.
Well I guess I have to admit to being "odl" since I remember the original A-Team. Probably won't bother with the movie since the remakes hardly ever live up to my expectations -- Miami Vice was awful!
2 tires for the 24 cuz they are awful on 4! My fingers are crossed for good things to happen.
Shrub's mad. Guess we won't be seeing any post race interviews with him. But as late as this race is liable to run, we might not see any post race interviews anyway.
I've had U-verse drop the race in hd but had the sd channel working... call in and they will fix it... use the online chat support and they will just tell you to call Fox!
FOX just totally wrong on the last two sequences.
JJ and Denny never made contact. JJ not unhappy with Denny. Hamlin has nothing to do with it.
Totally missed the action on pit road. Mike Joy just caught the tail end.
Larry and DW now just babbling.
JD, I am on Jimmie's radio he was unhappy with Denny after the caution came out. He told his spotter to tell Denny to back off he just got loose.
geez, DW, can it, will you please. Clowns in the booth.
It's truly a shame David Ragan isn't having a better run tonight with a captive holiday audience for such a big race.
His story of overcoming persecution and ridicule for being a driver with an alternative lifestyle is a story more should know about.
Kudos to UPS for giving him a chance!
JD, Mike Joy is still talking about JJ & DH getting together and they never touched each other.
I just love when DW does his "clowns to the left of me jokers to the right" thing.
I will really miss FOX.
48 and 11 never touched, but the 48 was unhappy with how close Denny got. Something the 11 did upset Jimmie
Jimmie always has to have someone to blame. Didn't look to me like Hamlin was dogging him too close on the track.
Poor baby, is someone racing the 48 again?
71 on pit road unscheduled stop. 46 still out there
Does Chip get the $20 million if he does the double?
Vicky - I don't know what view the booth is watching cuz i sure didn't see any contact between those 2 cars. Sounds like the booth is trying to make something out of nothing. I thought it was TNT that knows DRAMA.
David,
The entire sequence was wrong. They suggested JJ was going after Denny for wrecking him.
Not even in the same zipcode.
Wouldn't it be nice if the booth was accurate in its analysis? Darn shame that we TV viewers can't depend on them.
Hey guys i think the reasons the walls are yellow is because it is the 50th anniversary of charlotte motor speedway
Yeah I don't know how FOX played it up because on that sequence I was listening to radios. Just saying Jimmie was upset with Denny right after the caution flew. Not sure if there was a hand gesture there or what that we missed but no Jimmie was not going after Denny at all.
That might make sense. Thanks.
salts, that was last year. This is year 51 for CMS
JD, the camera shot after the 48 hit the wall and Hamlin went through the grass kind of looked like they might be going to hit one another, but since it didn't happen, I don't know why they keep talking about it.
i meant anniversary, not year. They are two different things
Anon 8:10- Excuse me!
Not watching (as usual). But keeping track online while I do other stuff. 'Cause I refuse to sit through the irritating commentary to NOT hear 'bout David.
it's not that a remake can never work (critics loved the Battlestar TV remake...) But it's just so rare--you loved the characters/actors as you remembered them, and it's never the same. And yeah, I'm old enough to have watched the A Team, fool.
DW just starts going on before he's even had a chance to find out what really happened. On the other hand, Dr Dick going up to congratulate Chip was nice.
Gina, I've been watching DWho since 'cough'....the late 70's. It's always hard getting used to the new one, but the writing usually holds it together.
ah ok. I thought that was last year because the walls were gold rater than yellow. This is the 51st running of this race, I know that much for sure.
Who knows, my theory is they were being cheap lol
If they are going to show this many commercials, I wish they were at least the NAPA know how commercials since they are fantastic.
This broadcast is like a bad David Lynch movie.
It makes absolutely no sense.
Kyle is imploding.
debris yellow, timed well for the 11, 18, 48 and 88.
Kyle asks for another bag of ice, going to make adjustments he complains he is tight and they have a slight rub on the right side still
Jr, KB and JJ about to go a lap down and suddenly there is a "debris" caution. Who would have thunk it.
@David - They're not going to show this phantom debris, are they?
The mandatory mystery debris caution to keep Hamlin, JJ and JR from going a lap down.
Martin, hard to show what only NA$CAR can see.
Ok, lights are starting to come on. Time for some good wide restart shots. And I mean wide.
@OSBORNK - At least, sometimes they send a clean-up truck and a track crew guy guy pretends to pick up something.
LOL, GlenC, I tried watching it back in the 70's (I was only a child -- LOL) but could never quite get "hooked". When Tennant came into the role, I started watching it again and really enjoyed it. You are right, the writing is what makes me watch - and yes, the battlestar galactica series was pretty good, although they lost me after a couple of years when it got too "weird".
I don't usually see a movie if its based on a book I read either.
Denny was already lapped but it saved him from losing the lucky dog.
Hats off to the 46 for still running out there. Good to see them making an effort!
Well, everyone has seemed to be so afraid to actually RACE the 48, that he's forgotten how to actually race i traffic with guys who might want to win. Put on your big boy pants Jimmie and suck it up.
Well, the anon poster who likes fox and dw got his/her wish for a NAPA know how commercial...
I'm sitting here drinking a lynchburg lemonade. Maybe it will make the broadcast appear better.
They totally glossed over that mystery debris.
Not a frying pan or anything? Would anyone who was watching a race think there would be a frying pan under the car? Geez they are making the race fans out to be so stupid.
sounds like the cars are driving through an overpass. audio is not great tonight
dang it, I like the sound but I can't tell anything from that camera angle
@David - I gotta agree, the #46 is doing a good job of attempting to go the distance.
the network can't be worried about nascar not giving them a new contract..highest bidder will win, are the announcers afraid that nascar will tell the network they won't allow them to announce in the future? Its obvious that was a bogus caution, and not a word said
18 complaining about being loose off. Saying he cannot do anything.
Boy that "Crank it up" did not sound good on my home theater system. Tinny and hollow sounding.
Darcie - you are a woman after my own heart! All that tiptoeing around the 48 has finally ended.
Whoever badmouthed David Ragan must be feeling foolish, he's running GREAT but still a long way to go! :)
Not feeling the broadcast, but what else is new.
Kevin Conway sick in his car but toughing it out. McDriver standing by.
JD and give up all that track position?!
I hope Conway can make it. Some things are just for pride.
Hey everyone! Hi Gina! Hope everyone is having a great time tonight. Solid race so far
anyone know any updates about the fans at Indy that was insane
So David Ragan finally gets some positive coverage from Larry Mac, and DW immediately shoots it down saying "of course you can move up if other people have problems".
Come on, DW. Please give him some credit for his driving skills. I had no idea DW was such a homophobe.
Come on David! Move up to the front. Make The Community proud! We love you!
No mention of the splitter brace breaking off?
Why did they cut away from cleaning the grill in real time but had time to show the replay.
Jon,
Minor injury to two fans. Conway has broken leg. Nothing more except a hole in the catch fence.
If that had happened during the race it would have been halted for over an hour (estimated) for fence repair.
Hi, Jonathan! How are things?
Yea, wasn't that splitter brace broken off right there?
Oh and about the grandstands tonight, they seem much more packed than last year. Check out youtube and type in nascar crank it up 2009, find the coca cola 600 and you can see there were much more sections of empty seats than today. the digger cam shows it best last year you could see all the colors of the seats that looks like flags, this year same shot and you see people in the seats. so just my take
Anon 8:47- I don't usually respond to trolls, but stop it!
Sorry everyone, but no one makes fun of my driver that way without me saying something!
So I wonder if Kurt is relieved that he won't have to race his brother for the win tonight?
I don't think that was a splitter brace. It looked like a clear plastic drink straw to me.
When they showed the shot of the 11 before it looks like the splitter brace was broken - I don't know about the 18's damage but considering how they hit on pit road, it could have broken the brace.
I don't think the splitter brace broke because I thought that too but looked at it again and it was still there...
@JD - The center splitter brace was still intact after the cleanup, that must have been part of the debris that came off and looked like a brace.
I'm awake. Been up since GP2 race before the F1 race 5AM CDT. Might have dozed between laps 180-220.
Kyle was okay with his splitter brace, their issue was the tow on the car which they seem to have fixed. He is running decent times but has no track position neither does the 48.
the 11 has massive problems
I wouldn't volunteer if I were @McDriver. Its gotta stink in Conway's car. Eeewww!
@JD - I think we're all assuming you're talking about Dale Jr.'s splitter brace. Right?
that sounds great,Jonathan. Its been a nice weekend so far. I'm enjoying the nice weather and just doing stuff around the house.
I watched some of the 500.
single car shots, need to break out the wide shots and aerials.
good to hear them going through some of the field though
Johnson made up a bunch of ground early but the handle has really gone away, last car on lead lap.
Here come green flag stops
David, if they did wide shots we might actually see the race and why would they want to let the TV audience enjoy it.
go Ragan!!!
So your showing two cars racing each other and when you go to cover a pit stop you put the leader all by himself in the other box?
Makes sense
so do they throw a caution to save the 48 from going a lap down? Or let the green flags cycle through?
Any bets?
Plenty of names we haven't heard at all tonight. Heaven forbid we do a rundown.
Kisses to Kyle from DW.
David, it's impossible to watch seriously. Single car shots, missed action, bad graphics. DW and Larry Mac just talking and talking.
How I wish Mike Joy would call the action and take control of the telecast.
DW -- finally the 48 wrecks. Wow, what an awful thing to say.
The camera did not even go with the spinning car. Amazing.
JD, I agree. But I think that was one of those fixed in place cameras.
DW takes Jimmie for the championship, now he is starting to backpedal some...
Huge hit. Good replays there. Little tasteless to jump right to an incar looking square at the driver while he is still wrecking though
The pics of the Indy crash are up at IndyStar.com
Think that was a robo-cam with an operator away from the cam itself.
David, I agree. Why not wait until they are sure the driver is OK before going to that view? They used to be more sensitive than that.
Jr back on the lead lap...when did that happen?
Any info on who got a wave around? Lucky Dog? Anything useful?
Kenseth - "Didn't think he could beat me to the line"
Sally, useful information is an oxymoron when it comes to Fox.
Just a note on DW "finally". It was more as a Jimmie has been fighting the car and finally lost.
Much like I have posted in the past. If you aren't fully watching and investing 100% attention its not as painful.
No info. Just BS and chatter. Nothing useful for fans. Just a chat with no one telling them to get back to the race.
These used to by my fav three announcers.
Did Mike Joy just say the indy 500 was the greatest spectacle in racing?
Hmmm, bet that Nascar won't like that.
The cars look great under the lights. The yellow walls, not so much. Ugh.
Kyle saying car is pushing.
Oh look, Mike Joy reporting Bruton is offering 20 mill. That report is inaccurate, just Bruton being Bruton stealing others' thunder.
I miss the indy 500 coverage, this looks like a 2 year olds work, just awful and DW is just full of incorrect information tonigt....
Kyle had a save also....doesn't know how he saved it.
Points leader on pit road with an unscheduled stop!
JD, that used to be the case for me, too, but now every race broadcast is just an ordeal to get through in the hope that even a blind squirrel might be able to find a nut of useful info or camera work.
Believe me, I am multi-tasking -- if not I'd go insane. I have to say thank goodness for the computer which lets me find out what is going on.
Dick Berggren as Jamie Little.
29 had vibration, crew said it was not the lefts
Ouch JD! That was cruel!
Jimbacca, you could be right. Maybe I misinterpreted DW' comment. It just sounded funny.
Harvick pitted in the 290's and that sets up twin 55-lap runs and he can finish this race in one stop. Other drivers still need two stops.
If there's a safety car he'll take the wave-around.
caution for robbie gordon's hitting the wall.
55 laps may be asking too much for fuel. First run everyone was stopped by lap 50
why cant get the camera men to position ther shots with the ticker at the top in mind. why do they have to show just empty pavement in the bottom third of the screen AARRGGG!!!
anon -- why ask why? Because somebody is a blind idiot calling the camera shots.
It's NOT Brutons idea. Indycar talked to him about it and he took it and brought it to the press.
Anon 9:25PM,
Welcome to our nightmare. No one listens and nothing is fixed with FOX.
"Tough" said David Hill when we objected to Digger.
I would bet good money that we haven't had more than 3 minutes total of information from the pit reporters
Bevo, 3 minutes of real information would be a bloody miracle.
Yep Jim....Bruton being Bruton. It's not even a done deal yet because IMS has to agree to it first and I am guessing they are posting a good portion of that since they brainstormed it.
Heeeeeere's Jimmie! He's back.
The 48 is back on track 33 laps down
It's really annoying when the booth talks about a problem on the track and it takes the cameras forever to find it.
Yeah it is dark in Charlotte because its 9:30 pm. it's dark there around 8:45. I am in Phoenix too, still got a bunch more daylight
Anon 9:300 is not familiar with the concept of time zones, I'm afraid.
It's pitch dark in this part of the world. I think big brother may not be through racing with his little brother.
East coast is dark now. Different time zone from Phoenix.
if kyle can race for the lead I would be amazed. He is extremely unhappy with the car because they are battling push and have since the wreck
JD- maybe the camera didn't pan with the spinning car because it was a locked off speed shot. It was in a straightaway. Aren't most of those locked off?
I am trying to see it again. The speedshots are usually outside, where it would be very dangerous.
Ever seen those Robo-cams? They have a remote operator and the camera is the only thing in the line of fire.
sunset in Upper Michigan is at 9:40pm eastern time.
Did I miss something or was Byrnes not wearing a Fox Sports shirt?
Some Hawaiian print kind of deal.
Let the KB love fest begin.
Thanks for your replies about the light. I just read the wiki on time zones and now I understand. You learn something new every day I guess.
DW really is pumping himself up tonight. I think he is disparetly trying to get himself in the Hall Of Fame next year.
I thought pit reporters had to wear firesuits down there or am I just really tired and confused?
LOL. Anyways, Kyle saying he is where he is thanks to his exit, car is still tight. Doesn't know when the pace will slow up enough for the outside to work. Still feels pace is too quick for it.
They don't have to, TNT and ESPN ones do. Something the pit directer mandated for ESPN years and years ago after seeing a crew guy or someone get burned in a pit road fire.
FOX just doesn't take that approach.
RaceView Crash #3
200 miles too long. Fans are leaving the stands at the track.
la la la, kyle, la, la, la
@David- Thanks for the info. It was just one of those things that all of a sudden hit me. Never noticed before that Fox doesn't do that. Thought it was a NASCAR regulation.
I was kind of wishing it was 700 miles. It's starting to get good - and the broadcast booth is really heatin up as well!
@David - I think it was Jerry Punch that came awfully close to getting burns as a result of a refueling incident.
So after all that talk about the paper and junk on Kenseth's front end they did not follow up when he ran behind the slower Biffle car. Teammate, maybe a coordinated move.
Nice to have you back. Yep, that booth is cooking! Missed wrecks, passes for the lead, no recaps of the field, no info at all on restarts...Emmy Award winning.
JD, I felt that way last week at the All-Star race - the segments felt too long. I can't imagine trying to sit through this race.
I get why the 600 is the length it is, but I'm happy to be at home listening to it on the radio and watching what Fox shows me on TV.
And the October race can get really really cold as the night wears on.
Kenseth had his CC let Biff know on their private channel that he was going to come up on his bumper . . . but you're right about the lack of follow-up
From a 2008 ESPN story:
"When ESPN started covering NASCAR races in 1981, pit reporters wore street clothes. That changed in the mid-1980s when a fire erupted in Richard Petty's pits during a pit stop at Atlanta. Dr. Jerry Punch was covering the pit stop and was wearing an ABC Sports blazer (the race was on ABC). Jerry helped pat down the fire on Petty's gas man, but in the process, one of the sleeves on his blazer melted, the ABC flag on his microphone melted and his eyebrows and moustache were singed. Punch said Jeff Mason, who was the coordinating producer, decided on the spot that pit reporters would wear firesuits."
Bevo, I wish they would for the TV people. They get awfully close in the line of fire at times no pun intended.
Thanks MV.
I know someone spoke on that before couldn't remember who it was.
Missed the pass for the lead by the way
ink! Nice to see ya.
McMurray: "WOOHOOO!!!!"
the race is heating up becaus its getting near the end. If it was 700 miles, we'd just have to wait longer for them to get on with it.
Thanks JD - I've always been around but more of just a follower
Did they mention the #7-Gordon is in the garage? They came back from commercial to hear themselves speak, tell us what we missed (not that they would've shown it on the screen), now more commercials.
If you follow Twitter...you can tell how much you are missing by watching Fox.
McMurray is looking good right now . . . X's and O's guys.
thanks for the info on why the ESPN folks and on Jerry Punch. I'm surprised that NASCAR lets them in the pit area without protective gear. Poor safety practice.
basically all the races are too long for this generation of TV. There used to be only 4 or 5 channels, we had to watch wide world of sports on saturday, there were no other options. Guess what, today, a lot of options and over 3 hours is stretching it, nevermind 5 hours...
as usual..DW is full of it. Jamie Mac was running Busch/NW series for Rusty his first year at Roush and it didn't help him there... What it is is better cars and working out his communications with Bono.
Gina, that is a good point.
@RyanMcGeeESPN - Kurt Busch, Jamie Mac, Jeff Burton running 1-2-3. Their former teammate Kenseth runs 4th. Jack Roush reaches for Tums.
5 hours is a vast overstatement. We will actually end at about the 4 hour 10 minute mark today. I don't complain about the distance of many races, only California and Pocono. the rest are fine by me.
NASCAR does mandate close toed shoes and pants when in the garage area as well as pit road, if you've noticed not every crew chief wears a firesuit, much like Kevin Kidd for Joey Logano in NW as well as others.
LOL on that Roush remark. Great point!
Saying Tony Stewart hit a Biffle pit crew member. Calling for medic to the #16 pit.
No mention on TV.
Yeah it looked like Smoke's rear end slid out as he peeled out of his pit and clipped a tire carrier at Biffle's right rear.
Ink, that is priceless.
JD -- here's the replay FINALLY. Those guys who go over the wall are really brave.
Thank you.....
@David
If I remember correctly (and it's been years since I have had a pit credential) the explanation for that was the possibility of chemical exposure -- I wore blue jeans and in retrospect it would not help much in a fire.
