Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Daytona (6:30PM - TNT)

Here we go with TNT's biggest race of the year. Daytona under the lights starts with a one-hour pre-race Countdown to Green show.

Lindsay Czarniak will host with Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds alongside on the TNT "infield rig." The big feature is one on the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. Folks who have seen it say that it really does a lot to put his contributions to the sport in a very human perspective. The live interview on the set is Tony Stewart. Wally's World will be back with a track description.

Upstairs to call the race will be Adam Alexander, Wally Dallenbach Jr. and Petty. On pit road are Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider, Matty Yocum and Phil Parsons.

This is the Wide Open coverage that TNT has been tweaking for years. It features commercials in a video box while the racing continues on the screen. In return, there are some added sponsor logos and animation elements. It works, but some folks really hate it because of the differences.

TNT will once again offer RaceBuddy. Jim Noble is the RaceBuddy pit road reporter and he has been doing a great job with interviews and updates. This online free application features multiple cameras and a social media stream for chat.

3D TV is on the way and TNT will originate two streams of 3D content for this race. DirecTV, NASCAR.com and several major cable TV providers will offer this content free of charge. The only drawback is that viewers must have a 3D capable computer monitor or TV. Of course, you have to wear the glasses!

This post will offer you an opportunity to offer comments on the TNT coverage. To add your comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by.

Is it just me, or is there not much info coming thru about what's happening on track? I feel rather lost already.

MikeC said...

Looks like each wide open sponsor is getting a 10-lap segment.

The Loose Wheel said...

Kyle Busch holding his own alone in front of leaders. They are not catching him

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bevo,

He has a ton of things to do with this Wide Open coverage.

I had hoped Adam would crank it up a bit more, but not tonight so far.

OSBORNK said...

Sally, I'm not learning much from the bobble heads either.

Anonymous said...

not sure why we are pickin on david tonight, but i appreciate his info, so far he's been the most accurate.. how people can complain about a commercial graphic in the corner vice having a commercial fill the whole screen is just amazing

MikeC said...

This is one of those races where you don't need a lot of PXP because the action will do the talking for you. I feel Alexander's doing an ample job.

Anonymous said...

I keep forgetting to switch to RB because the TV camera shots are so good. I can follow the race....what a concept!

Makiki
Honolulu

The Loose Wheel said...

Bevo I agree. Missing Shaheen. I felt he was the best piece they had for that role.

Adam is a good reporter.

Decent flow on SD, doesn't appear as smushed as I expected

OSBORNK said...

I think TNT is doing a good job of showing the action on the track during commercials without the commercials blocking what is happening.

The Loose Wheel said...

87 off

The Loose Wheel said...

Matt covered that 48 stop perfectly. Phil looks even worse now.

longtimeracefan said...

Re: Makiki @ 10:04

Agree, really good coverage on TNT tonight.

Anonymous said...

You guys complaining about the commercials are crazy - this is TONS better than going away for full-screen commercials for mulitiple laps at a time.

red said...

ok, i really appreciated seeing the pit crew names and positions on that stop by the 48. wish every team could get that once each race.

Anonymous said...

i got the 65" hd and 27" sd on at the sametime and they are doing a great job with that camera with the commercial box on and not covering the cars, how does the camera guy know how far that box comes up that he can do that?

bevo said...

I get that he has a lot to handle tonight but so far this season I'm getting a Jerry Punch vibe from him.

red said...

from dinger's wife via twitter:
"right front is either blistering or starting to shred from what I see. Did 4 tires and fuel"

Daly Planet Editor said...

Some folks have said they altered the HD format a bit and elmininated the graphics at the bottom almost entirely.

One guy has RaceBuddy plugged into his widescreen TV so he has two telecasts going of the same race.

GinaV24 said...

OK, so it's not just me that thinks the actual race coverage as in PXP is pretty poor?

now they are talking about the 18 and 48 together which is fine, but up till now they haven't done much -- don't like Phil Parsons on pit road at all.

Anonymous said...

I've watched on 52 In HD & 33 SD. Race looks good in both formats to me. Beats the heck out of full sreens adds?
Graphics cut off a bit on the 4:3 though..

red said...

and she updates on dinger: " oth right tires were corded."

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, I am told it does not overlap, but the video is full and the graphic at the bottom extends below the end of the live video as it is framed.

Does that make sense??

brad said...

don't remember drivers making single car stops at restrictor plate races before.

Vicky D said...

Disappointed with RB as only the top 22 are showing on leaderboard. And mosaic is locked up and I can only watch battle.

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 10:08 - I would guess the production truck provides crosshairs or box corners for the camera guys to know what part of the shot is being seen by the viewer.

red said...

brad: agreed in re: single car pit stops at daytona. but then again, i don't remember tires going to cord so quickly which seems to be the reason we're seeing these 1-car stops.

GinaV24 said...

David, I miss Ralph in the booth, too! I can't say I like Adam in this role - he just doesn't do it for me.

The Loose Wheel said...

Good job by NASCAR letting all the stops cycle before throwing caution

Anonymous said...

good move they held that caution for "non serious debris" until everyone had finished green flag stops

red said...

this is such a different daytona pit-stop event. i'm more used to having teammates come in together and leave together to keep the draft.

granted, the tires are forcing some teams' hands but still, it's odd.

red said...

The Loose Wheel said...

18 is discussing changing the studs on the left rear so they can have fast stops late

Anonymous said...

I miss Ralph in the booth, too. Fit in with chemistry of Kyle & Wally after Weber left...nothing against AA...

Anonymous said...

jd, you know sometimes when you watch hd and there are black bars on the top and bottom because its widescreen, is that what they have done and basically shifted the picture up and the graphic at the bottom is two bars wide? therefore no picture is being lost?

The Loose Wheel said...

JD was there any word asto why they selected Alexander? I can't recall. Just giving him a shot or did Ralph get offered the gig and decline?

He was the much more seasoned PxP guy in my eyes from all the stuff he does on SPEED

Anonymous said...

Why dont directors show the debris?

GinaV24 said...

David - I agree, why screw up the race flow for non-serious debris.

Red -- I know it is weird - maybe the bigger plate will allow them to not need to pit in tandem.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David,

Every network wants "their guy." FOX has Mike Joy and ESPN has Marty Reid.

TNT chose Adam as "their guy." Ralph was not an issue in the decision. As you may know, Ralph does another major motorsports event series on SPEED.

The Loose Wheel said...

The debris was off the 46 when he shredded the right front.

Again great call by NASCAR holding off to let things cycle. I'm impressed. Almost halfway...

red said...

anon @10:22: not trying to be sarcastic here really but no need to show debris this last time since it was pretty evident when we saw yeley's exploded tire flopping as he came down pit road.

curiously, tires may become a big issue at daytona tonight.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 10:20PM,

That is almost the same. TNT basically squeezes the video into a parameter and then inserts the graphic to perfectly fit the HD screen ratio.

red said...

ginav24: it's just so strange. since forever, team pitting has been a gigantic part of the strategy here. i can't quite get used to it yet.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thanks. I guess it makes sense, but at the same time Ralph doing that series gives him better qualifications to be in that role over a veteran pit reporter.

I was telling a guy at work several months back when TNT announced it he got excited because he thought I was talking about Rick Allen. he really enjoys Rick and this would have been a great gig for him. Imagine Allen, Petty and Dallenbach. Now THAT would be an energetic booth!

Anonymous said...

that is why every nascar race should be wide open or split screen commercials

The Loose Wheel said...

I agree with annon. If the ratings reflect a huge difference, I would love to see it happen

GinaV24 said...

I know, Red, it sure is odd. Its nice to see them able to run without having to be right on top of one another, too, but I know I wasn't expecting this either.

Dinger tried to put that car in a hole that didn't exist.

OSBORNK said...

I prefer wide open to split screen because the racing is shown in normal size rather than shrunk down. Much easier to see when there is an incident.

GinaV24 said...

NASCAR needs to figure out how to do the split screen thing for all the races. It makes for a much more enjoyable broadcast to watch. the other way of 3 minutes of racing with 5 minutes of commercials just doesn't cut it these days -- people just use their recorders and FF anyway.

MikeC said...

They must not have sold all their inventory for this as they're running promos for their own programming.

Anonymous said...

not sure it will have significant effect on the ratings for most races (people just don't want to invest that much time), but it sure makes it great for those of us who watch each week..plus i would argue the companies are getting more for their money, i actually do see their stuff and hear it, where normally i walk out of the room when the block of commercials come on

The Loose Wheel said...

What I really like is this information section that is very reminiscent of the "Old ESPN" where you got information without the booth having to mention it. Stating the leader and wave around cars as well as free pass is a neat bonus.

Very good balance with all the graphic elements minus the leader one and split screen one

Daly Planet Editor said...

Mike, told it was the regular commercial inventory piece by piece just like we would see in a regular format. So, the promo's stayed!

GinaV24 said...

Adam can sure read a good promo!

Daly Planet Editor said...

David,

All three Sprint Cup networks have rejected the notion of a social media rep in the booth to provide that type of content.

Instead, they hand the Twitter phone to the PR guys who offer nothing but obvious race comments.

TV networks just don't get social media yet...

OSBORNK said...

Hamblin has been the most impressive driver tonight so far. He sorta sneaked up on everyone.

GinaV24 said...

LOL and a new position in the world is created - a social media rep -- I only use twitter to follow race stuff. otherwise I don't care what people are doing in their "normal" lives. I'm living mine.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, I was not referring to Twitter but rather the bottom graphic bar of the screen they have been using for various info. Coming out of caution to green they showed that information as well as just now the points as they ran. And they DIDNT talk about it! just show it and keep calling the race. I personally like seeing points as they run but I know people hate HEARING about it. It makes for good balance I feel.

You get your nuggets without taking away from action on the track.

MikeC said...

I've absolutely enjoyed TNT's coverage this season. If I had to pick a negative it would be Marty Snider always finishing his reports by saying "isn't that right, Kyle & Wally?" or something to that effect.

Anonymous said...

boy are they missing the racing..jj just about hit kb and they are talking crap

The Loose Wheel said...

good thing i recognize the symbol because you can't read the Victory Junction decal on Jamie's roof cam!

GinaV24 said...

Anon, I saw that too and wondered why the booth didn't mention it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I agree, it's way too low key for me. Adam needs to crank it up and he just can't. Having Jerry Punch flashbacks.

Anonymous said...

can you imagine bestwicks call when jj squeezed him, he would have interrupted larry macs irrelevant analysis at the time.

longtimeracefan said...

RaceBuddy audio (ATT DSL) still a half second ahead of TNT (Comcast) here in Bloomington, Indiana.

bevo said...

Great camera work, informative graphics. Could use more info from the pit reporters.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dale Jr in 30th. No comments from booth?

GinaV24 said...

Yeah, and those flashbacks are NOT good ones. Boy you are so right, Allen would have been all over it, so would Marty Reid. Adam and the rest are just doing this la, la, la coverage deal.

brad said...

@David: Jr is running behind the 5 so maybe it is by design.

GinaV24 said...

they are past halfway - and its almost 11 p.m. east coast time, they need to pick it up and impress me more or I'm gonna go to bed and watch the end tomorrow.

Sally said...

Concentrating on the front of the field, with occasional reference to 'the other' cars farther back. When they don't keep track, that's when we get the, "Where did he come from?"

Daly Planet Editor said...

Getting grief from the media at the track. Apparently, while TNT was in the commercial, AJ and the King got into in in the pits.

Wonder if TNT will follow that up?

Anonymous said...

jr can't ride up high, said his head was bouncing like a ping pong ball and couldn't see too well..they can't find the right adjustment, going to try a rubber in right rear..

GinaV24 said...

hey, Red, they did the pit crew summary again. It is a nice touch. A lot better than the bobblehead camera thing they use on the crewman. That view makes me sooooo sick.

Sally said...

And those things are what keep things interesting...not yet another twist to the crapshoot format!

brad said...

JD. They probably sent Phil to cover it! sounds like a good story from what i see on twitter.

GinaV24 said...

Wow, well, would it be a conflict of interest for Kyle if they do?

I wonder if Richard is tired of the dinger tearing up equipment every race?

The Loose Wheel said...

Well judging from what I heard about why AJ got fired from Red Bull, follow-up on that situation would be very nice!!!

Course maybe this will prove just how little Richard has to do with day-to-day operations at RPM...

red said...

ok, gluck says this on twitter:

"At the sight of AJ video, the whole media center went, "OH!!!" Looked like Petty was trying to console him but AJ wanted none of it."

brad said...

HOLY CRAP !!!!!! Kyle is gonna be pissed at JPM!

longtimeracefan said...

That was not cool with the 18 and the 42.

Anonymous said...

Is it me, or are the side by side commercials sometimes 5 minutes apart? We get a long span without commercials, then they get crammed together for a while.

Adam hasn't really impressed me at all. He reports, reads promos, one dimentional, and has no range...sounds familiar.

Phil as a pit reporter is still a complete joke.

Sally said...

That was a 'racin' deal'. Kyle came up a lot more than the 42 came down. Kyle has done that a lot this weekend.

The Loose Wheel said...

Man. Kyle wasted no time getting out of it. amazing how light these cars are even on the straights.

I'm going to go cry now.

The Loose Wheel said...

42 reporting rain

triple splits look good here on SD

MikeC said...

MRN reported the situation between Allmendinger and the King. They said Allmendinger and Loomis are in the trailer talking things over.

Anonymous said...

clearly kb came right, he thought he was clear and wasn't..not sure if he thought jpm should have lifted but not sure he has any right to be ticked

red said...

guess the local network just grabbed hold of the top of the hour 'cause i have full screen commercials right now on comcast.

MikeC said...

Kyle might be more ticked at his spotter. Hard saying.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Mike, one reporter just told me it was a physical confrontation.

That should be interesting....

Anonymous said...

i'm picturing it has the king trying to calm down aj, and he pushes him away..did not want to be consoled..or calmed down..

MikeC said...

Yes, that's how MRN reported it as well, JD. And when I say trailer, I'm talking about the team's trailer, and not the NASCAR trailer, per se.

brad said...

it was 100% a racing deal. however, with Kyle it is never a racin deal unless he is doing the wrecking otherwise someone else did something stupid to take him out. Nice interview Kyle real mature ther buddy!

Anonymous said...

why would they not show the replay from the front first, that was stupid

red said...

man, shaheen just is NOT letting young mr busch get away with his snarky answers tonight. as a result, we finally get a solid answer.
good for shaheen!

GinaV24 said...

Kyle is being so sarcastic at first, good for Ralph to try and get a follow up. Good explanation of the draft from Kyle.

GinaV24 said...

Red, you and I are sharing a brain wave tonight!

The draft does weird things, sucks for Kyle not much else to say.

I also agree horrible job cuing up that first angle of the replay

brad said...

for all pit reporters on all networks ..... that is how to interview Kyle Busch. please take notes and apply in the future

GinaV24 said...

Yep, Kudos to Ralph!

Anonymous said...

Hopoe you feel better.

Anonymous said...

GinaV24 said...

@Anon, LOL -- that is a standing bet my brother and I have

Man oh man, the 5 was loose

Sally said...

Holy Cow!!!! What a save!

GinaV24 said...

@Sally, for sure! and no one else panicked and wrecked the field. Oooh, I spoke too soon

Charlie said...

No reason to show a car pitting in full screen under green. Now we know why.

MikeC said...

I think we just figured out why Adam has been so subdued for the majority of this broadcast. 3 cars get together and Adam gets excited to say "it's the big one!" I think he's just been laying low waiting for the big one to occur.

Sally said...

And our PXP man called the Ragan incident 'The Big One' before it happened.

The Loose Wheel said...

Drivers being told to save fuel, close to making it if it runs regular disatance

GinaV24 said...

@MikeC -- LOL - so he's saving up his excitement? You could be right -- he could do better than this, I'm not impressed.

red said...

hey jd? so i'm getting full screen commercials here on comcast on philly again. isn't wide-open supposed to be for the entire race?
got to tnt show commercials, now a local furniture one. feels like the locals took over again to get THEIR commercials shown.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ralph is REALLY doing great work tonight in interviews

GinaV24 said...

40 laps to go, geez its late.

Anonymous said...

I agree! Great job Ralph! Yes Jamie and Phil would have backed down (well they wouldn't have asked REAL questions to begin with) but Ralph hung in there and kept pushing for a REAL answer.

Martin Vincent said...

@red - Wide Open is not for the entire race, there are still conventional breaks once in a while.

GinaV24 said...

@Red, I think they are doing fullsize commercials during cautions -- I have fios in the philly area and I'm getting the same thing. Only using the split coverage during green flag racing

Anonymous said...

full screen = local commercial breaks

Martin Vincent said...

Allmendinger is back on track.

MikeC said...

Yes, you'll get full screen commercial breaks when TNT sends it to the local cable companies for their breaks.

Anonymous said...

jr up to 18th, yellow saved him along with the wave around rule!

GinaV24 said...

any update on the AJ/Richard Petty deal? Since TNT hasn't mentioned it.

red said...

thanks to all for the clarification. i think i might have known that around 7 tonight but now? uhhh, not so much recall remains.

Anonymous said...

kyle petty just twittered he knew nothing about it, never heard about it.. where's the pit reporters

red said...

GinaV24: someone asked kyle about it on twitter & he had no idea what they were talking about. i suspect the booth doesn't know anything about it.

GinaV24 said...

so now we get public service announcements from the drivers about the good year tires? Geez, that's lame

red said...

and from jenna fryer on twitter:
"Robbie Loomis on Dinger v King: ``I always say the car owner shouldn't talk to the driver anytime after the race, especially after an accident. I think Richard's been here so many times, he's been through this stuff and he was just trying to get him to loosen up and let the boys do their stuff on fixing the car and get back out there. Anytime you talk to somebody at the wrong time, it always causes discussion that needs to be worked out. That's all that happened.'"

MikeC said...

The thing between AJ and the King is most likely something the booth would know nothing about. That's the pit people's duty. What MRN has is a pit reporter who doesn't report on any pit stops....the guy's job is solely to report on cars out of the race....so, he happened to be in the right place at the right time to see the incident, as did some other reporters. Evidently TNT didn't have anyone see it.

GinaV24 said...

thanks for the updates, folks, I appreciate it. the booth probably doesn't know then, but there are pit reporters down there - of course they probably sent Phil or Jaime and both are a waste of breath.

GinaV24 said...

OK, put the racing in the BIG screen and the in car in the small one.

MikeC said...

Adam is so much wanting to call the big one. Sees the #26 go around and he says "there it is!"

Anonymous said...

mikec might have to play it back, they were just talking about if the race went green albeit highly unlikely and then the yellow comes out, that might have been what he was referring to..

MikeC said...

I think this is the point in the race where cautions breed cautions. It's up to Adam to bring it on home!

Anonymous said...

someone's going to end up in the middle get loose and take out a few cars.. come on 77

Martin Vincent said...

Are there a lot of Goodyear ads I'm not seeing here in Canada? I keep hearing screeching tires and look for something going wrong on the track, but I think it's that Goodyear blimp doing a burnout.

GinaV24 said...

this is when it all gets crazy and scary

GinaV24 said...

Martin Vincent said...

@Gina - Sorry, into the 77, but cutting off the 2 in the process, I guess.

Daly Planet Editor said...

What would you like me to post?

I am watching TNT and RaceBuddy, chatting here, on Facebook and Twitter and talking on the phone.

All I need is 3D and my night will be complete.

Good coverage of the wreck, but Adam is out of gas and being a pit reporter. He don't get it.

The Loose Wheel said...

Looked like 9 hit 2, 2 hit 31, 31 hit 77

The blimp or any aerial platform is contractually obligated for the length of the TV telecast.

Helicopters simply land and refuel. The blimp can fly for many hours.

Anonymous said...

jd where's the blimp? is it down, that would have had to be the best view of it

GinaV24 said...

yep, so far, Adam has been a real waste as a PXP guy. The pictures have been good, I'm enjoying what I'm seeing, but the booth and most of the pit reporters have been useless.
