Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Pocono (12PM ESPN2 - 1PM ESPN)

It's an overcast summer day in Pocono with a good chance of rain. The Sprint Cup Series has some fireworks at the last race here, so today should be interesting in many different ways.

There is golf on ESPN this morning, so ESPN2 will host the NASCAR Countdown show at 12PM ET. Allen Bestwick has Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace alongside. This will also be the location that provides the "rain fill" should weather come along.

Marty Reid will call the race with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the TV booth. On pit road are Dr. Jerry Punch, Mike Massaro, Dave Burns and Jamie Little. Vince Welch is recovering from a Thursday car accident back in Indy.

Pocono is a huge three turn track that has been a source of controversy for years. Safety issues at the track and the lack of the kind of racing that fans have come to expect from other tracks makes it tough for TV.

A short truck race on Saturday with several restarts showed that the track can be exciting, but if the Sprint Cup guys get strung-out and long green flag runs are the order of the day this one is sometimes tough to watch.

Long camera shots down the frontstretch and low angle shots from the infield as the cars go between turns one and two make for good pictures. The pit road is wide and straight which makes for easy coverage of both green and caution flag pitstops.

Last week, ESPN cut away from the finish and focused the cameras on the winner, his pit crew and crew chief. Hopefully, Pocono will bring a decision to show all the lead lap cars race to the finish line for fans of those teams and drivers.

This post will serve to host TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

I swear, Pocono has worse wrecks than even the plate tracks.

bozo said...

IF you are going to give them 2 races, at least make them put safer barriers everywhere on the track

rich said...

Wow, what camera work

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's mind boggling that they have no idea what happened to Sadler.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

It is possible this race may be over b/c there could be rain falling

Sally said...

I'm glad we have JP on pit road. I know he'll be at the infield care center to check on Elliot. Horrible wreck.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yes, worst camera work ever. There has to be an on board towards the rear that shows what happened to Sadler

Anonymous said...

I hope we get updates on both the drivers. That was stone evil hit.

Why no safer barriers???

cp43 said...

Someday can we have the tracks install protection BEFORE we hurt the drivers anymore??!!

Dammit, Pocono this is 2 races in a row. I don't care if it does cost a million dollars! Put In Your Safer Protection NOW!!!

rich said...

Man, I think that is the hardest hit I have seen in a long time. No Safer barrier, just all Armco barrier and dirt. I hope Elliot is OK

Sally said...

I'm having flashbacks of Jeff Gordon and Schrader into the wall hard there...Steve Park tumbling thru the infield...too many others to name.

Chris from NY said...

Well said, Rich. ESPN just showed us the most horrendous camera work known to man, demonstrating what happens when you use too many tight shots. Where's TNT when you need them?

When a car completely hits a steel wall, LOSES ITS ENGINE, and its driver comes out seemingly injured, but very little of it's on camera, something is terribly wrong.

GinaV24 said...

oh my dear heaven, that was terrible to see

Ken-Michigan said...

85 cameras at this race and they havent found a camera with a replay ?

If they DO have a replay....taking a LONG TIME to find it.

and why isnt this clean up crew kickin it in high gear to clean it up..... COME ON !

Darcie said...

The "I'm sorry" by jj doest cut it, IMHO. Stupid move on the 48's part

The Loose Wheel said...

SAFERS are a tens of millions of dollars worth of improvements.

Hope Elliott is okay

The Loose Wheel said...

Rain has washed out a turn btw

GinaV24 said...

Sally, I was having that, too. I was on teh phone with my brother. when they wreck at pocono, they wreck big. I hope Elliott is OK

Sally said...

I doubt we will see a reply of Elliot until they know how he is. They tend to do that. Thanks goodness.

Anonymous said...

they missed the sadler wreck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Why the HELL was there a 90 degree corner for ANYBODY to hit?

All that money for solar energy but no SAFERS all around and the horrid corner Elliott hit.

Prayers to him

WHY No camera shot.

Such d*** TIGHT SHOTS ON Kurt...NOTHING on ELliott except a tiny corner glimpse??

GinaV24 said...

I don't think I've ever seen an engine ripped out of a car.

Anonymous said...

200 cameras at the track and they miss the hardest wreck in years!!

bobbydjr said...

I sure hope Elliot's ok!

To bad ESPN had all their cameras focused on Kurt's crash. I guess we'll never see how bad his crash was.

GinaV24 said...

Good news that Elliott is being released. I hope that he gets checked out by better doctors when he gets away from teh track.

oldnewenglander said...

Didn't they do away with straightaway grass at Talladega almost 20 years ago after Rusty tumbled end-over-end?

Darcie said...

Of course it was intentional, you ESPN idiots. Sure he didn't mean for it to happen..........BS. You were bumping on purpose jerk wad

Sally said...

I loved Kurt's interview. That God Elliot is OK. They need Dr. JP there, though.

Anonymous said...

Disgusting Disgusting Disgusting! How do u miss that wreck!!!!!

Charlie said...

Now we will see tons of commercials.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 4:59 - well said very well said

GinaV24 said...

I know this is personal for me cuz I want the 24 to win, but with the red flag because of the accidents and the rain, could NASCAR please call this race?

PammH said...

What they showed of the crappy shot they have was enough for me..:(

Anonymous said...

That camera angle wasn't perfect, but they found something!

The engine being ripped out of the 19 might have been the best thing that could have happened because it absorbed the impact. But still . . . doesn't IMS have safer-barriers along the inside in a similar spot?

bozo said...

think the drivers can complain about the race track? is that okay since it isn't nascar?

The Loose Wheel said...

Talladega still had the grass as soon as 2005. They only got rid of all of it after the re-pave. They did pave over the exit of 2 though a long long time ago

jennifer6973 said...

That area of the track has been dangerous since 1992 when Darrell Waltrip crashed Davey Allison and he barrel rolled 11 times.

bobbydjr said...

GinaV24, I've seen engines knocked out in wrecks before. But that's the problem. I've seen it happen. This time ESPN had every camera at the track focused on Kurt and nobody got Elliot's wreck. They blew it!

GinaV24 said...

walking away in good spirits? Really? I think he's just really really lucky, but good spirits is NOT what that man was looking like

Sally said...

There is no excuse in this day and age for Armco and berms of dirt. See the dirt blow out of the opposite side of the armco with the impact? Horrible.

Anonymous said...

Rusty is the worst shill, why did he not ask where the he77 the safer barriers are!!!!!!!

GinaV24 said...

OK, Brad, well you are actually making sense. Why is that wall out there?

Jimbacca said...

Good job with Zooming all cameras on the first spinning car. Really helps show if anything else happens.

Awesome job ESPN. Keep up that great ZOOMING so we can see one car.

Here I was watching the race with somewhat decent camera work then you go and totally pull amateur hour. Is there some magical button that zooms ALL cameras in on one thing? Zoom in from the Aerial. Really??

What the 'heck' having that kind of angle and that complete lack of safety on the inside of the track? ISC get freebies?

adamtw1010 said...

Any chance we could get a NASCAR.com Trackpass Raceview look?

brad said...

Now that Elliot is OK, how in the world do you miss that wreck? atleast an overhead shot or something. It is rediculous that there is no angle of that. piss poor camera work !

Anonymous said...

Pocono should lose both of their races for next season because of this. No reason why this track should get another race.

Anonymous said...

Shut your mouth Rusty and show us the wreck!!

Chris from NY said...

The last, closer shot was also horrible, but at least it was enough to see that impact. I'm glad Elliott's feeling a bit better.

If the rain doesn't end this race, the darkness will (no lights, middle of nowhere).

Anonymous said...

Yes Brad!! Piss Poor... Piss Poor

The Loose Wheel said...

Pocono is not owned by ISC. It is an independent track

Charlie said...

Thanks Tim. Engines are bolted to the frame.

oldnewenglander said...

Hey ESPN tape library in Bristol. . . listen to Jennifer.

You had 1992 Miller Genuine Draft 500 on Speedworld. (The clips of Davey's accident are on Youtube.)

Davey didn't hit that 90-degree ARMCO only because he flew OVER it.

GinaV24 said...

Robbie and Sally, yeah I don't like seeing a crash like that at all. I stood in my living room a few years ago waiting to see if my driver climbed out of his car alive when he lost his brakes and hit the wall on the driver's side.

I was happy that he was OK, but really pissed at the fact that there were a ton of people cheering his wreck.

I Never cheer a wreck. Its a persons life at stake, even if they aren't MY favorite.

Rusty is an idiot.

Anonymous said...

Gee Tim - thanks. I never knew what a Hans Device was.

rich said...

Rusty really showed his butt there, asking about what Tim just showed.

cp43 said...

Not ESPN cameramen's fault. The whole front wheel came off Kurt's car and was shedding parts everywhere. Was the obvious thing to be following.
I bet that's the first major wreck missed on any network in many many years and yet they still got the main contact.

The question is why was the wall like that? NASCAR must fine the track owners for the horrendously dangerous situation. I don't care if it cost TENS of millions of dollars to put in the SAFER barrier. The track owners can't cost us another Dale, Sr.

Anonymous said...

How about an apology Alen? "Sorry we missed the wreck folks but we r espn and we suck".

Anonymous said...

Yes - Pocono is owned by the Matioli family but you can bet their allegience is with ISC and the France's NOT Bruton and his money. (should they choose to sell or give up a date)

Anonymous said...

WOW engines are bolted to the frame & the chassis makes it safer for the driver. Tires are rubber...

Why is TB smiling?
and
Brad is making sense...

slander q. libel said...

Apparently, Rusty is a graduate of the DeeDubbayoo School of Weather Reporting...

Ken-Michigan said...

" Have At It Boys " !!

GinaV24 said...

Jimbacca, I'm with you.

And yes, the cars are safer, does that mean that the tracks shouldn't be doing everything they can to make the track safe, too? Pocono is antiquated and has a lot of stupid stuff like that.

The Loose Wheel said...

Speaking of that, Doc Mattioli was on SIRIUS Friday and said he has no plans to ever sell the track, but is considering giving up a date after 2013 when the current TV contract expires

Nan S said...

Sadler needs to send a Thank You card to the guy who invented the HANS device.

The tennis match has started, in case anyone is interested :)

Anonymous said...

There goes Pocono's profits. They are gonna have to fix several areas before 2011.

Jimbacca said...

My Error on track ownership.

Why is the track getting a free ride on upgrades? New tracks have to bend over backwards and then some to get any kind of date but older tracks can drag on with safety upgrades.

bozo said...

bottom line is pocono could have put in the safer barriers when vegas did after someone hit their inside wall. Nascar should have required it at every track instead of worrying about what twitters a driver is putting out.

Martin Vincent said...

The only way we're going to see Elliott's wreck is going to be from the photographers' point of view or if a fan got an amateur video of it and sends it in.

cp43 said...

Raceview replay shows Sadler in a tight pack of 6-8 cars coming down the straight. 43 tagged him in the back as everybody slowed up. Elliot dove straight left across the track with no warning. Probably hardly slowed up.

Anonymous said...

Doc Matioli is a very loyal France family person. IF he gives up a date it goes to ISC.

He's up there in years and has done well and has been good for the sport. It does look like he needs to spiff up the place though.

Martin Vincent said...

Oh, and I was wondering why ESPN gave that weird replay of the wreck shifted to the left... SD viewers would have completely missed what us HD viewers saw in the right corner of the shot.

Once again NASCAR will be reactive as opposed to proactive in regards to safety.

Anonymous said...

2 words... we're sorry.

Ken-Michigan said...

Sure, the race track should absorb part of the blame for that inside barrier.

But, after all these years, the sanctioning body should ultimately have the final say on whether any given race track is "safe to race".

Hasn't anyone ever noticed this odd situation with that inside barrier ?

Didnt Steve Park's accident several years ago teach the track and NASCAR about the potential danger on that Long Pond straight?

Finally, ESPN camera crew blew this one. Where was the tower cam pointed outside of turn one exit at the time of Sadler spinning to the inside ....I'd love to know.

Anonymous said...

ESPN should at the very least address the fact thst they missed the wreck of the century.

Jimbacca said...

Ricky Craven on NASCAR Now tonight at midnight. That might be interesting.

Mary said...

Carl just asked whats next on espn and no-one knew - Bob said is this a quiz - he said no but if its important that might make a difference as to whether the race continued!

Sally said...

I still love that they give so much credit to the COT being so much safer...and barely mention the HANS. If the 2, I think the HANS has done more to keep drivers alive. especially after seeing Kez's roof fold up like a card table at Atlanta.

The Loose Wheel said...

Juan and Pattie had a disagreement. Juan thought 2 tires, Pattie called for 4

Anonymous said...

Poor LeTarte - hopefully this one will work out for him.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sally, the bigger car was a huge help for Kez at Atlanta. Not sure how much the HANS would have helped since it limits your movement. If you have a larger distance to collapse the roof, that helps alot.

longtimeracefan said...

Whoa, Mama Mia, there will be a least two more cautions with all these midpack cars taking no tires on that stop. Plus they will probably take out some of the front runners in the process.

GinaV24 said...

Sounds like I need to set my DVR for NASCAR Now or will i wake up with tennis on teh recording?

GinaV24 said...

Sally, the Hans and the carbon fibre seats!

brad said...

If it doesn't go back green you may need to hide all sharp objects from the Jeff and Steve.

GinaV24 said...

I'm not sure if I can stand to watch all this

cp43 said...

They should just keep running under caution unless green is possible. Don't come in to a red flag unless the sky unloads.
Still could be a GWC.

I might be a minor comment, but I sure like DJ's tie.

brad said...

too much honesty by DJ so Nascar pulled the plug! kidding but this broadcast has been screwed from the early stages.

oldnewenglander said...

Someone get the SportsCenter gang ready in Bristol in case they lose the uplink again.

Question,
What was the deal with the trap decals mentioned earlier?
I missed it.

MikeC said...

It would probably take 30 minutes to finish these remaining laps. ESPN has baseball at 8p.m. and ESPN2 has the X-games.

cp43 said...

Yeah the signal dropout was in or coming into Bristol. The logo bug overlay in the lower right stayed up & clean. Local systems were showing what they were being fed.

Also could have been a switcher in the truck since it went to black w/o any signal breakup.

MikeC said...

I think this last outburst of rain is probably going to finish up the day.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not happy with AB today. He has been a NASCAR PR guy and that is not his role.

Ken-Michigan said...

Great chance to talk with Elliott Sadler during this rain delay in the pit studio.... where is he ?

Anonymous said...

Without the wave around, when there are 14 cars on the lead lap & this senario happens, the guy deserves the win for staying in the top 15 and lead lap all day.

With wave around, when you ride around in the twenties and get free lap passes from NASCAR & end up in this position, the past x laps were pretty useless.

They have personally called all kinds of folks from PR people to track operators trying to sling this BS.

NASCAR is going to ruin itself. You can't control the message in today's world. We all know that.

Just be honest and let people judge for themselves.

If Nascar fined drivers and kept it a secret, I wonder if there might be other people that have been fined and were not being told about it.

In conclusion, let this be a lesson to the director that loves the zoom in feature of every camera. When you zoom in to a single car, especially during an accident, you miss the perspective and the residual actions.

Otherwise, the excitement in the booth was good. I was pleased overall with the broadcast.
