Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Pocono (12PM ESPN2 - 1PM ESPN)
It's an overcast summer day in Pocono with a good chance of rain. The Sprint Cup Series has some fireworks at the last race here, so today should be interesting in many different ways.
There is golf on ESPN this morning, so ESPN2 will host the NASCAR Countdown show at 12PM ET. Allen Bestwick has Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace alongside. This will also be the location that provides the "rain fill" should weather come along.
Marty Reid will call the race with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the TV booth. On pit road are Dr. Jerry Punch, Mike Massaro, Dave Burns and Jamie Little. Vince Welch is recovering from a Thursday car accident back in Indy.
Pocono is a huge three turn track that has been a source of controversy for years. Safety issues at the track and the lack of the kind of racing that fans have come to expect from other tracks makes it tough for TV.
A short truck race on Saturday with several restarts showed that the track can be exciting, but if the Sprint Cup guys get strung-out and long green flag runs are the order of the day this one is sometimes tough to watch.
Long camera shots down the frontstretch and low angle shots from the infield as the cars go between turns one and two make for good pictures. The pit road is wide and straight which makes for easy coverage of both green and caution flag pitstops.
Last week, ESPN cut away from the finish and focused the cameras on the winner, his pit crew and crew chief. Hopefully, Pocono will bring a decision to show all the lead lap cars race to the finish line for fans of those teams and drivers.
This post will serve to host TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 388 of 388I swear, Pocono has worse wrecks than even the plate tracks.
IF you are going to give them 2 races, at least make them put safer barriers everywhere on the track
Wow, what camera work
It's mind boggling that they have no idea what happened to Sadler.
It is possible this race may be over b/c there could be rain falling
I'm glad we have JP on pit road. I know he'll be at the infield care center to check on Elliot. Horrible wreck.
Yes, worst camera work ever. There has to be an on board towards the rear that shows what happened to Sadler
I hope we get updates on both the drivers. That was stone evil hit.
Why no safer barriers???
Someday can we have the tracks install protection BEFORE we hurt the drivers anymore??!!
Dammit, Pocono this is 2 races in a row. I don't care if it does cost a million dollars! Put In Your Safer Protection NOW!!!
Man, I think that is the hardest hit I have seen in a long time. No Safer barrier, just all Armco barrier and dirt. I hope Elliot is OK
I'm having flashbacks of Jeff Gordon and Schrader into the wall hard there...Steve Park tumbling thru the infield...too many others to name.
Well said, Rich. ESPN just showed us the most horrendous camera work known to man, demonstrating what happens when you use too many tight shots. Where's TNT when you need them?
When a car completely hits a steel wall, LOSES ITS ENGINE, and its driver comes out seemingly injured, but very little of it's on camera, something is terribly wrong.
oh my dear heaven, that was terrible to see
85 cameras at this race and they havent found a camera with a replay ?
If they DO have a replay....taking a LONG TIME to find it.
and why isnt this clean up crew kickin it in high gear to clean it up..... COME ON !
The "I'm sorry" by jj doest cut it, IMHO. Stupid move on the 48's part
SAFERS are a tens of millions of dollars worth of improvements.
Hope Elliott is okay
Rain has washed out a turn btw
Sally, I was having that, too. I was on teh phone with my brother. when they wreck at pocono, they wreck big. I hope Elliott is OK
I doubt we will see a reply of Elliot until they know how he is. They tend to do that. Thanks goodness.
they missed the sadler wreck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the HELL was there a 90 degree corner for ANYBODY to hit?
All that money for solar energy but no SAFERS all around and the horrid corner Elliott hit.
Prayers to him
WHY No camera shot.
Such d*** TIGHT SHOTS ON Kurt...NOTHING on ELliott except a tiny corner glimpse??
I don't think I've ever seen an engine ripped out of a car.
200 cameras at the track and they miss the hardest wreck in years!!
I sure hope Elliot's ok!
To bad ESPN had all their cameras focused on Kurt's crash. I guess we'll never see how bad his crash was.
Good news that Elliott is being released. I hope that he gets checked out by better doctors when he gets away from teh track.
Didn't they do away with straightaway grass at Talladega almost 20 years ago after Rusty tumbled end-over-end?
Of course it was intentional, you ESPN idiots. Sure he didn't mean for it to happen..........BS. You were bumping on purpose jerk wad
I loved Kurt's interview. That God Elliot is OK. They need Dr. JP there, though.
Disgusting Disgusting Disgusting! How do u miss that wreck!!!!!
Now we will see tons of commercials.
@Anon 4:59 - well said very well said
I know this is personal for me cuz I want the 24 to win, but with the red flag because of the accidents and the rain, could NASCAR please call this race?
What they showed of the crappy shot they have was enough for me..:(
That camera angle wasn't perfect, but they found something!
The engine being ripped out of the 19 might have been the best thing that could have happened because it absorbed the impact. But still . . . doesn't IMS have safer-barriers along the inside in a similar spot?
think the drivers can complain about the race track? is that okay since it isn't nascar?
Talladega still had the grass as soon as 2005. They only got rid of all of it after the re-pave. They did pave over the exit of 2 though a long long time ago
That area of the track has been dangerous since 1992 when Darrell Waltrip crashed Davey Allison and he barrel rolled 11 times.
GinaV24, I've seen engines knocked out in wrecks before. But that's the problem. I've seen it happen. This time ESPN had every camera at the track focused on Kurt and nobody got Elliot's wreck. They blew it!
walking away in good spirits? Really? I think he's just really really lucky, but good spirits is NOT what that man was looking like
There is no excuse in this day and age for Armco and berms of dirt. See the dirt blow out of the opposite side of the armco with the impact? Horrible.
Rusty is the worst shill, why did he not ask where the he77 the safer barriers are!!!!!!!
OK, Brad, well you are actually making sense. Why is that wall out there?
Good job with Zooming all cameras on the first spinning car. Really helps show if anything else happens.
Awesome job ESPN. Keep up that great ZOOMING so we can see one car.
Here I was watching the race with somewhat decent camera work then you go and totally pull amateur hour. Is there some magical button that zooms ALL cameras in on one thing? Zoom in from the Aerial. Really??
What the 'heck' having that kind of angle and that complete lack of safety on the inside of the track? ISC get freebies?
Any chance we could get a NASCAR.com Trackpass Raceview look?
Now that Elliot is OK, how in the world do you miss that wreck? atleast an overhead shot or something. It is rediculous that there is no angle of that. piss poor camera work !
Pocono should lose both of their races for next season because of this. No reason why this track should get another race.
Shut your mouth Rusty and show us the wreck!!
The last, closer shot was also horrible, but at least it was enough to see that impact. I'm glad Elliott's feeling a bit better.
If the rain doesn't end this race, the darkness will (no lights, middle of nowhere).
Yes Brad!! Piss Poor... Piss Poor
Pocono is not owned by ISC. It is an independent track
Thanks Tim. Engines are bolted to the frame.
Hey ESPN tape library in Bristol. . . listen to Jennifer.
You had 1992 Miller Genuine Draft 500 on Speedworld. (The clips of Davey's accident are on Youtube.)
Davey didn't hit that 90-degree ARMCO only because he flew OVER it.
Robbie and Sally, yeah I don't like seeing a crash like that at all. I stood in my living room a few years ago waiting to see if my driver climbed out of his car alive when he lost his brakes and hit the wall on the driver's side.
I was happy that he was OK, but really pissed at the fact that there were a ton of people cheering his wreck.
I Never cheer a wreck. Its a persons life at stake, even if they aren't MY favorite.
Rusty is an idiot.
Gee Tim - thanks. I never knew what a Hans Device was.
Rusty really showed his butt there, asking about what Tim just showed.
Not ESPN cameramen's fault. The whole front wheel came off Kurt's car and was shedding parts everywhere. Was the obvious thing to be following.
I bet that's the first major wreck missed on any network in many many years and yet they still got the main contact.
The question is why was the wall like that? NASCAR must fine the track owners for the horrendously dangerous situation. I don't care if it cost TENS of millions of dollars to put in the SAFER barrier. The track owners can't cost us another Dale, Sr.
How about an apology Alen? "Sorry we missed the wreck folks but we r espn and we suck".
Yes - Pocono is owned by the Matioli family but you can bet their allegience is with ISC and the France's NOT Bruton and his money. (should they choose to sell or give up a date)
WOW engines are bolted to the frame & the chassis makes it safer for the driver. Tires are rubber...
Why is TB smiling?
and
Brad is making sense...
Apparently, Rusty is a graduate of the DeeDubbayoo School of Weather Reporting...
" Have At It Boys " !!
Jimbacca, I'm with you.
And yes, the cars are safer, does that mean that the tracks shouldn't be doing everything they can to make the track safe, too? Pocono is antiquated and has a lot of stupid stuff like that.
Speaking of that, Doc Mattioli was on SIRIUS Friday and said he has no plans to ever sell the track, but is considering giving up a date after 2013 when the current TV contract expires
Sadler needs to send a Thank You card to the guy who invented the HANS device.
The tennis match has started, in case anyone is interested :)
There goes Pocono's profits. They are gonna have to fix several areas before 2011.
My Error on track ownership.
Why is the track getting a free ride on upgrades? New tracks have to bend over backwards and then some to get any kind of date but older tracks can drag on with safety upgrades.
bottom line is pocono could have put in the safer barriers when vegas did after someone hit their inside wall. Nascar should have required it at every track instead of worrying about what twitters a driver is putting out.
The only way we're going to see Elliott's wreck is going to be from the photographers' point of view or if a fan got an amateur video of it and sends it in.
Raceview replay shows Sadler in a tight pack of 6-8 cars coming down the straight. 43 tagged him in the back as everybody slowed up. Elliot dove straight left across the track with no warning. Probably hardly slowed up.
Doc Matioli is a very loyal France family person. IF he gives up a date it goes to ISC.
He's up there in years and has done well and has been good for the sport. It does look like he needs to spiff up the place though.
Oh, and I was wondering why ESPN gave that weird replay of the wreck shifted to the left... SD viewers would have completely missed what us HD viewers saw in the right corner of the shot.
davey allison you tube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pYxb5eJiBU
Once again NASCAR will be reactive as opposed to proactive in regards to safety.
2 words... we're sorry.
Sure, the race track should absorb part of the blame for that inside barrier.
But, after all these years, the sanctioning body should ultimately have the final say on whether any given race track is "safe to race".
Hasn't anyone ever noticed this odd situation with that inside barrier ?
Didnt Steve Park's accident several years ago teach the track and NASCAR about the potential danger on that Long Pond straight?
Finally, ESPN camera crew blew this one. Where was the tower cam pointed outside of turn one exit at the time of Sadler spinning to the inside ....I'd love to know.
ESPN should at the very least address the fact thst they missed the wreck of the century.
http://nascar.speedtv.com/article/cup-pocono-raceway-planning-safety-improvements-for-nascar-events/
Seems that the track already is set on what they will and won't do.
Track worker with lime green T shirt - "soft wall crew" LOL
Imagine the outcry if it was that "evil" Carl Edwards that got into Kurt Busch's back.
Rusty was so enthralled with his
"I and me" stories he paid no
attention to Brewer's presentation,
which was useless because the
camera didn't have a clue where
to view. The booth guys have been
good today but the Rusty and Brad
are babbling.
Ricky Craven on NASCAR Now tonight at midnight. That might be interesting.
Carl just asked whats next on espn and no-one knew - Bob said is this a quiz - he said no but if its important that might make a difference as to whether the race continued!
I still love that they give so much credit to the COT being so much safer...and barely mention the HANS. If the 2, I think the HANS has done more to keep drivers alive. especially after seeing Kez's roof fold up like a card table at Atlanta.
Juan and Pattie had a disagreement. Juan thought 2 tires, Pattie called for 4
Poor LeTarte - hopefully this one will work out for him.
Sally, the bigger car was a huge help for Kez at Atlanta. Not sure how much the HANS would have helped since it limits your movement. If you have a larger distance to collapse the roof, that helps alot.
Whoa, Mama Mia, there will be a least two more cautions with all these midpack cars taking no tires on that stop. Plus they will probably take out some of the front runners in the process.
Sounds like I need to set my DVR for NASCAR Now or will i wake up with tennis on teh recording?
Sally, the Hans and the carbon fibre seats!
Hey, this next wreck could be bigger.
How long will it take to run 30 laps.
Espn talks like 30 laps will be over in a few minutes.
It's gonna get wild here. hope everyone makes it to the end safely.
Yeah, again from my personal point of view, I just hope MY guy isn't in it.
Turmoil on the #42 team !
especially since he has his so-called teammate in the 48 really close by
Sally, it's all of the above. Each of the pieces contributed to Elliot being able to walk out of the hospital. Thanks to all and your deity of choice for him being ok.
I think Brian needs to sit JPM down sometime and explain to him the concept of "radio strategy..."
Slander, actually I have listened to Juan all year long and normally they are pretty good. They have spats just like any team does
If it doesn't go back green you may need to hide all sharp objects from the Jeff and Steve.
I'm not sure if I can stand to watch all this
They should just keep running under caution unless green is possible. Don't come in to a red flag unless the sky unloads.
Still could be a GWC.
brad, someone had better come to my house too! I'm going to cry or cut my wrists if they screwed this up again
Kyle Busch: "If it finishes like this, its bogus."
We're going red
bringing the cars down pit lane
David, for a change, I agree with Kyle
Nice transition from Dale Jarrett to commercial. Good job Espn.
TimeWarner just dropped the broadcast!!!
Did ESPN Bristol just lose the downlink from the truck?
This is all part of the rules . .. and anybody could have pulled that maneuver.
I might be a minor comment, but I sure like DJ's tie.
Telling drivers to stay in cars, going to hit track with the jet dryers and hopefully get back going. Should only be 10 minutes or so.
Lets see how that plan works...
I like Sam, I really do, but with the luck he's been having this year, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he spun under caution and smacked the wall...
WTH!?!? This is entirely inexcusable. ESPN along with anyone associated with this broadcast should be banned from being involved in NASCAR forever.
We lost the race here in Houston - but we got more commercials!
Sorry Time Warner. IMO, they are as bad as ESPN.
Kyle Busch is telling the truth on that one. If Hornish wins the Apocalypse will start 1 hour later.
I like Sam but he'd never live it down if he wins this and is out of a ride in 2011
too much honesty by DJ so Nascar pulled the plug! kidding but this broadcast has been screwed from the early stages.
Someone get the SportsCenter gang ready in Bristol in case they lose the uplink again.
well, its at least 1.5 hrs to dark. Dry the damn track, Gordon might not win it, but I'd rather see them race for it than just declare Hornish the winner
I have DISH, it's not T-W, the network probably just lost the feed. It happens, especially with T-storms all around them.
Brian Pattie making sure Juan is still alive lol
Question,
What was the deal with the trap decals mentioned earlier?
I missed it.
It would probably take 30 minutes to finish these remaining laps. ESPN has baseball at 8p.m. and ESPN2 has the X-games.
Yeah the signal dropout was in or coming into Bristol. The logo bug overlay in the lower right stayed up & clean. Local systems were showing what they were being fed.
Also could have been a switcher in the truck since it went to black w/o any signal breakup.
I think this last outburst of rain is probably going to finish up the day.
Trap decals?
Not happy with AB today. He has been a NASCAR PR guy and that is not his role.
Great chance to talk with Elliott Sadler during this rain delay in the pit studio.... where is he ?
Without the wave around, when there are 14 cars on the lead lap & this senario happens, the guy deserves the win for staying in the top 15 and lead lap all day.
With wave around, when you ride around in the twenties and get free lap passes from NASCAR & end up in this position, the past x laps were pretty useless.
I must remember to email Bestwick for reminding me to not watch SportsCenter.
We're getting ready to go again.
Reports of a huge cell roughly 10 miles out though
Ken, they never followed up on it and never even said who hit him or what really happened.
Imagine covering a race like this and missing the key replay of the event?
@JD-
I expect Ricky Craven will not play that role tonight.
Who's on the "expert panel" on ESPN tomorrow?
Gonna put the cars back on the track again! Sheesh...this has to be frustrating for these drivers! On the track, off the track, on the track, off the track.
ken-michigan if i were elliott, i'd be on the way home with (or to) my family right now. beat the rush and get home to recover.
From what I can tell looking at the weather on the internet, a bigger rain area is heading to the track.
Helton and the gang probably had the same talks with TV as the drivers.
They are finger pointing now that the sports popularity has dwindled and they know not what to do.
As I said earlier, the TV people have hard cards too and may be subject to fines and sanctions.
Hopefully Elliot is back in the hauler working on his third Budweiser. He did his interview. Leave him alone.
We thought the end of the June race was wild....I don't think that's going to be anything compared to what's about to embark in this race!
It's the annual pit reporters show. Jerry Punch, Jamie Little and Dave Burns.
OK, I think I'm going to be sick. I'm not sure if I can watch this.
Racing Fool,
They have personally called all kinds of folks from PR people to track operators trying to sling this BS.
NASCAR is going to ruin itself. You can't control the message in today's world. We all know that.
Just be honest and let people judge for themselves.
If Nascar fined drivers and kept it a secret, I wonder if there might be other people that have been fined and were not being told about it.
Red - at this point it's the story of the day with Sadler.
I bet Sadler's sponsors would disagree with you.
Ken-Michigan, I'm hoping that he went to find some serious medical attention
Good point Charlie,
JD, that is incredible.
I can believe it though as they cannot understand what they have done to the sport.
They also blame the TV folks.
It is sad and too bad.
It also broke me and left me jobless.
It is a trap!
I am glad I got free and only lost my job and not my pride.
Let's just hope no one gets hurt before this ends.
People wonder why NASCAR fans are such conspiracy theorists...its because often times the truth isn't far from the crazy conspiracy!
Yep, there are just too many avenues for information to get out. If NASCAR would simply just concentrate on making the racing good, the rest would take care of itself.
Toss out the rain and red flags and 500 miles is still too much at Pocono.
Have they completely forgotten that the car in the lead always runs faster since it is in clean air? They are acting like Biffle's car suddenly got wonderful, when it is all about the aero crap.
After we endured all day the finish is gonna be a real snoozer.
dare nascar to throw a debris caution
I double dare em !
I sent Jenna Fryer an email asking if she's ever been muzzled by Nascar. After all, she broke the secret fine story. I'll let you know if she responds.
Will Nascar let this go green or will they throw a caution. What does the script say?
The "script" says Biffle - Ford needs a win and Jack Roush is hospitalized.
Good Lord! This race is still going? This is longer than cricket matches.
Yall deserve a medal for enduring this all day.
we wont get a debris caution this week because we are already over the scheduled time for the race.
I love these guys trying to explain why Biff's in the lead. It's the aero, stupid, and not that it's a great car.
Biffle saved all his "push to pass" attempts til the end. Oh wait - that's Indy car.
Darcie- I think Biffle is far enough ahead that the 2nd place car has clean air.
TV ratings will be down on this one. Rain, red flags, 5.5 plus hours.
biffle... where is jack... thats why he won... all about the story
Thrilled for Biffle. He's one of the good guys. "This is for Jack, guys" Nice comment !!!!
This race is already longer than that tennis match yesterday!
Congrats to Da Biff & his fans
Thank heavens its over & all the drivers are alive & will go home tonight.
Atleast they showed the cars crossing the line this week. They did do 1 thing right today.
Nice camera work at the finish.
And there is joy in blue ovalville.
Way to go Biff!!!!
To bad they didn't use that over head shot more. Looked good there showing the victory lap.
WOOHOO!!!!! The 16 has done it!!
ESPN:
THANK YOU for showing the cars cross the finish line!
Makiki
Honolulu
Couldn't they use that same angle at every track?
That was funny. Tony & Carl were arguing about something and Media split 'em up. Radio grabbed Carl & Dr. Jerry grabbed Tony for separate interviews.
Congrats to Da Biff!
If you are about to head out the door, leave us a race wrap-up comment on the Your Turn page.
Just go back to the main page to access that post.
SportsCenter's new NASCAR post-race is scheduled until 7PM.
for some reason, seeing the sprint girl standing there behind Biffle with that vapid smile on her face really annoys me.
Probably because my driver didn't win, I always get grumpy then.
TSN cut to SportsCentre just before Biffle's interview in Victory Lane.
Anon 6:21 and Brad -- you guys are on it!! that's so accurate as to be painful
my wrap is that espn missed the worst wreck in years... that should b enough jonny.
In conclusion, let this be a lesson to the director that loves the zoom in feature of every camera. When you zoom in to a single car, especially during an accident, you miss the perspective and the residual actions.
Otherwise, the excitement in the booth was good. I was pleased overall with the broadcast.
Good coverage of a erratic race. Wonder how many folks said "This is too boring" and turned it off at halfway.
Their loss.
Another nice job from Marty & the crew, bringing us the excitement even with all the long stretches.
Ban Pocono until they get the SAFER barrier ALL the way around the track!!
Thanks for a nice job JD!
