Your Comments On The All-Star Race From Charlotte
Update: There is no TV Police post as this was not a full-length race. We welcome your comments on the SPEED coverage of the evening of racing on this post. Thank you.
It's a big night for SPEED as the network produces the All-Star race from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Kyle Busch won the truck series race Friday night and is clearly the story of the evening.
Detractors say SPEED is not the network to expose new fans to the sport. Nothing could be further from the truth. Week in and week out SPEED is the NASCAR network, doing the heavy lifting that the other NASCAR TV partners cannot handle.
Mike Joy is going to call the race. Folks thought that perhaps Rick Allen was going to get a shot after all his hard work on the truck series package on SPEED. This is not a FOX production, but SPEED executives kept Mike Joy in the lead role.
The debate on who is joining Joy in the booth began to rage from the moment SPEED announced it was again going to use Darrell and Micheal Waltrip. Larry McReynolds is filling-in for Kenny Wallace and working on the RaceDay and Victory Lane programs. Wallace is racing in Iowa.
Having two drivers in the booth loses the crew chief perspective, but SPEED likes the feedback it got from the earlier appearance of the two Waltrips on a Nationwide Series telecast. So, it's going to be all Waltrip all night long.
SPEED has a tough task because the All-Star race is always a mess. Rules change, tempers flare and the racing is very different from a longer Sprint Cup Series race. The night consists of two races and it is often the case that the earlier qualifying race is more interesting than the feature.
Look for a hyped-up production with more bells and whistles than normal. In the past, things have been a little over the top but this has been a solid production year for SPEED as the network continues to mature on the air.
Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are the pit reporters. This trio can deal with anything and brings exactly the type of experience needed for this one-off race. Byrnes is another name that has been discussed in terms of an eventual successor in the FOX TV booth. Krista Voda hosts the pre-race show.
Don't forget that NASCAR.com has a free RaceBuddy for this event. More camera angles and in-car cameras should be a perfect addition for this race.

Anon 9:20 no idea who Miller is?have to look him up
I'm not surprised to see Dale Jr. get the fan vote. IMO, a NASCAR All-Star Race without Dale Jr. is like French Fries without ketchup.
I can only imagine people have grown impatient and have decided to tune this out. This is the longest time they've gone between the 2 races. It used to only be an hour...that alone was long enough.
JD, I totally agree. They've gone from an exciting end of a race to Hype-fest. It's as if the first heat never happened. You watch, they'll screw this up big time.
Don't think a break like this would work on ABC or FOX.
Just got back from watching the NBA Go MAVS. Did I miss anything?
Okay, THAT'S an anthem.
Gymmie Corey had a penalty on pitroad and is trying to come through the field! Great anthem!
At the end of the anthem they should of had some drone or helicopter turn it's lights on and just be there.
Scare the heck out of everyone.
Sorry if I'm late on this, but why is JJ in the 5 car?
Time to prime the Waltrips and pull the starter cable.
Kiteman, it's to hype the 5% discount if you use a Lowe's credit card. Mark is in the 25, another traditional Hendrick number
Wait, I thought that discount was for JJ only. Now I'm confused...
If you went ABC or Fox it would have to go as follows:
8p.m. Start of broadcast
8:05p.m. Command to start engines for Showdown
8:15p.m. Green flag of Showdown
9:00p.m. End of Showdown
9:10p.m. Driver Intros
9:20p.m. Opening Ceremonies
9:27p.m. Command to Start Engines
9:35p.m. Green Flag of All-Star Race
Ya know, they always talk about getting a younger audience attracted to NASCAR, my 9 year old just went to bed.
Good God, get a clue !!
NASCAR's head is right next to Jimmie Johnson's "horseshoe"....yep.
Test
Why has this race not started yet? Whats worse than DW in the broadcast booth? Brother Michael with him.. Looks like I'm going to bed early..
Sorry for the test. I was having a problem signing in.
Geesh I'm really tired of Hammond & McReynolds with this thing!
That touch screen needs to join Draft Tracker and reversing the field.
Told by the Sprint Vision guys that the racing was supposed to start at 9:15PM.
They are behind schedule and TV is not happy.
The amount of time before the race is just excruciating. I've lost all momentum and interest.
It's degrading that they have to resort to cheap hyping that someone's going to crazy out on the track. Why not just say there will be intense racing? It's like the girl who really has everything wearing a short skirt to get attention. Trust me, I have nothing against short skirts. We may get the Green before 10:00 pm. It'll be close. Just think, the pre race stuff started SIX HOURS ago.
Ken - my 8-year-old daughter is asleep on the couch. My wife left to go watch something else in another room long ago. Anyone other than a die hard fan is long gone from this broadcast.
Anon 9:29.
Ladies? OK whatever? (JD said chicks).
NO Chicks, OK? Chicks are under 25 or even less!
If "Ladies" like his "whatever it is" (that Hambone head has), and his complete lack of communication skills, fine!
He can be very happy to attract the older crowd! NOT chicks as JD said!
So am I right? And he is deranged?
Seriously - it's almost 10pm Charlotte! Who in the world planned this thing? What a joke.
I thought Hammond twitted that they had problems with the Tv screen that was used for introductions and had to fix it and that is why things were behind.
Just finished watching the Winston Open/Showdown whatever its called now. FOX tried to fool us with the SPEED logo, but evidence shows this was a FOX style broadcast. Incidents missed, follow the leader instead of the battles, and a quick cut away from the finish. Not going to bother with the all star race.
The two Waltrips in the booth taught me a lot. It taught me how much more tolerable Michael is compared to his brother. Darrell has become the senile grandparent that nobody wants to talk to at a family party. Michael contributed, Darrell filled time with his typical senseless BS. If a new Waltrip is joining FOX in 2012, let him replace the old one.
It could be worse; I could have spent money to be one of those poor goobers sitting on their thumbs in the stands. It's good for beer sales, I guess.
Entire Bud Shootouts have been run in less time than there is between these two races. It doesn't take this long to turn around between Twin 125 qualifiers; it shouldn't take this long between these two.
By the time they take green, it'll go down as 90 minutes of down time.
twitted = tweeted
Gee got to get with it.
They are finally starting this thing???????????
Let's hope this race is a good one.
Great - they brought over the FOX music that drowns out the pit reporters. I think I might be out on this one...
Losing fans to DVR tonight. This is ridiculous to start the main event @ 10:00 pm. Why? Does research tell them this?
Charlie,
No you are right, anything Hambone head does IS Twitted! ;)
With less cars it should help the Fox camera bunch but I doubt it.
This is a Fox race on SPEED. Just that they don't want to deal with format on Fox.
We don't usually get a Boogity on SPEED!
The Kyle Busch love fest begins!!!
Ya know, speaking of the Shootout, it doesn't award any points either but you never hear it described as an opportunity to get even or take the gloves off.
Anybody else see that beer can on the track on lap 4?
DW's dog joke is greeted by .... silence in the booth.
Palmetto,
I saw the beer can!
Good eye Sir!
Darrell D.A.'s mouth needs some of that bearbond.
Kind of get the feeling that Mikey and Mike have bonded and DW is out to lunch?
Where is that guy that was going to put D Dub out of my misery?
In car cams, tight shots.
Sure isn't like the truck race last night.
Geez, if the they wanted a female in the booth.....how about Krista instead of Michael. Just saying.
You know Byrnes, Hammond and Petty have been working practice and stuff for SPEED.
Those three guys are good together.
What is the over/under on useless camera angles?
DW made a remark in the first race about how well Penske cars run in May. Both Dodges are in the last two positions.
If the 2 doesn't have brakes, why don't we have a camera on it to see what happens?
Is this a NO commercials race?
It should be after all of the crapola we had to wait through to get here!
Okay, now both Dodges are in the pits.
Under green they show a replay in full screen of a person wiping off debris on the front grill of a car.
Why?
Were under green.
Kurt Busch might just get himself fired before this season is over. Dude is out of control on the scanner.
There is room for Kurt in the booth.
It may not be all car JD. Kurt couldn't even do a burnout in the competition before the race. And it was presented by his sponsor.
JD, that's better than his brother being out of control on pit road!
JD,
Is there something you don't like about Kurt? :)
So do you know where your driver is and why. This IS an All Star Race and they should be talking about everyone in this race, not just the leaders.
Mikey, Brad didn't pass Biff; Biff let him go. No sense in fighting with someone five laps down who can't beat you.
No, never heard him get crazy like this.
Charlie, leave well enough alone. I'm scared DW will talk about Matt K. and jinx him.
There's only 21 cars in this race, can't Speed show us all of them at some point?
Mike Joy is trying but the guys have another agenda.
Kudos to Speed showing the first 50 laps commercial free. That's about the only good thing in this first segment.
From reporter Jeff Gluck SBNation:
Addington asking Kurt Busch for feedback on adjustments, but Kurt says "I really don't care. I want it backed in the fence."
Will this break last 90 minutes too?
WHY, WHY must DW comment on every topic mentioned? Seems Mikey finally got the memo but DW can only do "my ego, my ego, my ego".
What two/three folks at FOX/SPEED are the only ones anywhere who worship at the DW shrine?
Makiki
Honolulu
Poor Steve Addington...he's had to survive both Busch brothers. Man's a glutton for punishment.
Kurt is NOT one of my favorite drivers. He's a ferocious competitor, but has a violent temper. It's common knowledge that Team Penske has some serious problems with their front end geometry. Their top technical guy just quit to go to Harvard. Big problems are no excuse for Kurt to go 'postal'.
Kyle starts 6th. I'm waiting to hear a "Here comes Kyle!"
I don't know, Makiki, but this coverage is AWFUL! Someone IDOLIZES DW, but why?
Sally,
If Steve was not well taken care of by RP he would have left long ago!
He must like the RP organization at some level.
Heh, the guy streaming the feed I'm watching likes to flip channels during commercials. I see History channel still has nothing on worth watching. It used to be such an awesome channel, too...
The dirt cam should not be used during restarts.
or ever.
I tried an experiment tonight. I muted the TV and listened to the Showdown on MRN. Now I wonder why I haven't done that sooner. Even with the radio being 5-6 seconds ahead of TV, it was very enjoyable and exciting.
It is a shame Nascar accepts this as a good telecast.
and they want them to renew.
@Jim:
No Waltards, relevant PxP, plus Ned Jarrett. It's all good.
Jim, folks use the DVR to sync with the radio and love it.
Team owners do not need to be media in any shape, form or fashion. No one will ever convince me that a Waltard can be unbiased.
See - they don't learn. Dirt cam again for no reason at all.
I'll have a column on that topic this week. Keep an eye out for it.
At this track the first two laps of a restart are when things are crazy.
Zooming out and watching the whole field for these few laps would be better then a dirt cam.
Charlie, blimp coverage on the restarts would be even better. I don't know why it isn't used more.
They just can't change. Just two cars at a time, missing all the racing and the wrecks.
Just cannot change.
Perfect example of why the booth is worthless. They mention the 5 took two, but didn't even bother to question why he didn't take four since he had plenty of time to.
Before the race is done, DW will have picked about 10 different drivers to win.
Remember that feeling from last night of knowing what was going on and how the race was developing?
Good job of missing the spin while concentrating on a car not far behind it. Maybe the camera crews need to strengthen their forearms so they can snap the cameras around a bit faster.
I had to rewind and check it. From the time that Joy first called the spin, through the trailing tire smoke in the LIVE shot, it was three full seconds until we saw Smith's car. Wow...
Nice reflexes on the camera crew. Car billowing smoke just ahead of the shot, and it takes freaking forever to find it!
Sigh.
What's up with all the bizarre camera angles? And the bizarre babbling in the booth? We never see anything live. It's all instant replay. WTF has happened to our favorite sport? Maybe this is why Kurt Busch sounded so despondant on the radio. Kurt has a TV in his car.
It's about time DW sang again. I hope realizes how much the fans love it!
The booth is really settling in to this one now.
It's the FOX boys. Doesn't it look familiar?
I wonder how it is for a spectator trying to see the cars on the backstretch with that big honkin' screen glaring?
The guy directing the shots probably didn't know that smoke met something was wrong. Just like not zooming out on restarts.
They just don't think it's that important.
It's time for the Emmy-award winning "Crank it Up!" I'm surprised the graphic doesn't include Digger holding the trophy :)
Quit showing worthless replays during green flag racing! Can't they get anything right?
Come on DW - you should have sang that line!
This is the poorest excuse for a race broadcast I have seen this year. I don't have a clue what has happened to get us to this point and I don't hold out much hope of seeing much of the remainder of this race.
I don't know how much longer I can stand all this excitement. I may have to give up before they limp to the finish of this marathon. This is as long as the 600!
I was just about to say, wait until next week!
This is really bad! I love going to races and trying to keep track of who is where and why.... But now I don't have to go there, I can be just as lost at home for free! LOL Idiots!
Give me the Speed Tv Truck crew for the last 10 laps.
How long until TNT takes over?
Mikey has been far better tonight then Durrl. DW just says the dumbest things. There's no hope for him.
I know they have tried and tried to adjust the format of this thing to make it interesting, but it really is just a waste of time. The segments don't make any sense at all and really serve no purpose.
They ought to just run a 150 mile race. It's confusing to the viewers, and it causes the broadcast to just be a mess.
Next week?? Geez, I'll probably mow the lawn twice during the 600!
No, DW, I did NOT notice Jeff Gordon dropping back since the last pit stops, BECAUSE FOX DID NOT SHOW IT ON MY TV! But you wouldn't know that because you think this all happens only to entertain YOU! For crying out loud DW, do you EVER watch tapes of your God-awful performances?
At least the 600 doesn't have 90 minutes of nothing in the middle. I wonder if the break between races will exceed the total running time of tonight's two races combined.
That's it, darn it. I am NOT subjecting myself to this pointless exercise again next year. Million, schmillion; does anybody think these guys wouldn't drive just as hard if the only thing on the line was a can of peanuts?
We heard all the hype before the race about how drivers would be getting into one another during this event. We haven't heard much of that lately.
It's hard to generate excitement in a broadcast where everyone knows that the first 90 laps are nothing more than killing time for the final 10 laps. Now, let's just pray that DW doesn't talk all over Joy at the finish.
Anon @ 11:00, the segments serve to artificially bunch up the field since All-Stars, being the best in the biz, aren't normally going to generate a bunch of cautions.
"Can't they get anything right?"
As long as they do the opposite of everything the Cult of John Daly demands, they'll be fine.
Let's hope we can see ALL the cars take the checkered LIVE, in REAL TIME...not instant replay...LIVE! Do you know what THAT is, FOX?
That's awesome, I got a cult! Bow down and send me money!!
Probably not going to work.
Nothing but tight shots and in-car cameras even during the 10 minute break!
This is just so mind numbingly stupid I can't remember why I ever watched nascar, and I even defended racing to idiots that liked hollywood movies.
Huh,?
This does seem mind numbingly like hollywood!
You know your all-star race is flawed, when the booth doesn't even know the rules of what the heck is going on. Earlier in the race, they we're talking about pitting now for they can stay out later. Then they talk all this pit strategy. Now some finally informs them that "uh guys, they all have to come back in for 4 tires". Nobody has a clue, including Nascar.
Check is in the mail JD.
Just don't let it go to your head and start predicting the end of the world.
At least they somewhat acknowledged the on-air confusion before the break about the mandatory 4-tire stop with 10 left.
Once again, this whole thing is so confusing the announcers don't even know the rules. How are the fans supposed to follow along?
You want to make this sucker exciting? Run three 15- to 17-car 25-lap heat races, seeded by current driver points. The top four or five from each advance to a 50-lap finale.
This final gimmicky pit stop just disrupts the flow and momentum.
Carl,
Finally! An online revenue stream!
Why do fans even bother voting in Jr? It's obvious he doesn't want to be there as he's a total non-factor. As a matter of fact, he basically said he'd prefer not to race so he could sit home and drink beer. That interview was in The Sporting News.
Believe Jr. has a certain kind of fan base.
JD, I don't have any donations, but I can put you in touch with the Nigerian Minister of Defense :-)
Does anyone in the US gave a rat's behind about Man U and Barcelona?
This has not been a must see race for me. Boring race due to horrid cam work so tuned out..the break is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to long.
The screaming, the cheering, the pomp & circumstance....um, too much.
I'm moping I couldn't get to major twitter party with Cincy Importor..but to hope to make the RollerGirls in a few weeks but I digress (note, none of these chicks look like Raquel Welch in Kansas City bomber, but still fun I hear & you can take cameras w zoom lens to the meets or whatever they call them in Roller Derby.)
I'm almost asleep from this race & ff on DVR so I could come into my room. This hub bub started at 7pm?
Did I hear right that Race Day was THREE HOURS. Mama Mia.
I've truly lost my appetite for this sport I used to love.
Curious if TNT will still have decent camera work so I will enjoy my racers ...but I DO MISS knowing my drivers car colors in one glance or even two.
On another note, many reporters snarking about lousy tv coverage as they are watching via tv :)
So they get some of our frustrations.
After Kyle B interview, am I the only one who thought he smiled after pretending he didn't know if he could win?
p.s. Also hope Trevor Bayne gets a dx & gets well. Sad he's been all over and nobody can tell him what is wrong.
@Palmetto:
Sounds legit.
How many freaking pace laps are they going to run before letting them change tires? The time milking tonight is ridiculous.
No wonder they bury this one on SPEED. No network would put up with this insanity.
@Palmetto: I was just thinking the exact same thing. This event needs heats, transfers, short segments and the final 12 cars going 20 laps for a million. That would be amazing drama.
With all my spam, I win the Nigerian lotto about twice a day!
Just need the $250 for the shipping fee.
Anon @11:14 - Uh, yes.
I like trolltard.
Of course Jr has a fan base, but when will they realize his heart isn't in racing, but in all his other businesses, such as Hammerhead Productions.
Does anyone understand the rules of this final stop? I'm too tired to figure out what they're supposed to be doing.
Let's face it, this race hasn't been interesting since the year Jeff Burton stole a segment with a brilliant pit stall selection.
I see JD's back to deleting comments. Nothing like pumping an open discussion for everyone and then deleting everyone who knows youre FOS.
Time to see the hype they've been building up come to fruition. 10 laps to go.
Zoom out
@anon 11:18
LOL U MAD?
We don't call people names because we are adults. Simple rules.
This is a 10lap dash?? They're all strung out.
"Reuty Tooty, fresh and fruity!" There are no words.
Nascar should've waived that restart off and tried it again.. That was horrible.
Reutimann has as much of a shot as I do.
Weird how they strung out. Think that is a COT thing or tires?
Weeks of hype and imagine that - the leader on a 1.5 mile track gets out to a 3-4 second lead.
NASCAR is so broken it's not even funny.
This is boring. If they're trying to make us think this is a sprint to win, they're full of it.
It's a COT thing. That car bites.
Kind of looked like an aero thing. It really is all about track position this season.
Congrats, Carl. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz for the race.
Wow, what did he do to his car?? Geez
To those of you going to sleep, thanks for hanging in there with us tonight. I know it was a Looooong show.
We are live blogging the Nationwide Series race from Iowa tomorrow afternoon.
Allen Bestwick, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree.
Screwed up grass slide to end a screwed up event.
Thanks, JD. Have a good Nationwide race.
JD, if we're all adults here, why have your blogs looked like they've been written by a petulant child who's pouting because he's been bumped out of an industry thats passed him by?
Oh and look at that, they showed the full field finish. What is JD going to write about tomorrow? I'm sure they didn't stay on the S/F line long enough to show the cleanup trucks coming in after the race.
Good night all. Thanks for the company for the race.
The Theme song from Flipper? LMAO....weird.
but honestly, this should've ended at 10pm...NOT 11.30..only scheduled until 11pm amidst all the madness, minutia & moneyMAKINGinCarCams!
They were still trying to hype the race in the last 2 laps, saying that Kyle was closing in on Edwards. Surely didn't look like it to me.
Carl nearly flipping the car in the grass was the highlight of the night. What a disappointing evening. I'm sure there will be some who will clamor for the All-Star Race to move to different tracks, but the HOF activities pretty much commit this event to Charlotte.
Hey, I didn't know that was you Jerry! Why didn't you just get a nick and join the conversation?
Jim, I was just checking the replay. He almost rolled that thing!
Of course, 52 weeks from now we'll be hearing "the gloves will be coming off tonight" and saying the All-Star race has always been exciting, with clips of the pass in the grass and DW "saying Rusty can choke on the money" he won. Things took place at least 20 years ago!
OK, 1:30 Countdown and 2PM race from Iowa tomorrow!
Have a great night folks.
Boy, I'm going to have to 'reflect' on this one over a few beers. Not much changed. Same problems in the booth and production truck. What offends me most is the cheesy hyping of the race as a wreck-fest.
Fox did their usual job covering... 2 cars at a time, horrible track shots, miss any real action until a replay and still employ Darryl Waltrip to call races. My grandmother could have done a better job, and she never watched a race. Can't wait for TNT to begin, split screen coverage and much better race views
I can't comment on the broadcast because I didn't watch it. When I saw there were going to be two Waltrips in the booth, I made other plans.
I read all of the comments at TDP after the race was over. Thanks to all who commented. You confirmed that I made the right decision.
Geeze.....Talk about lead in your pencil and nobody to write home over. What a complete and utter let down that was. All the hype & hoopla over nothing, expecting decent coverage comparable to last night. My wife was asleep before the second segment and I made more trips to the fridge than I can remember in a longtime. The length of the gap between the Showdown and the All Star race was way too long. Driver intro's were way over done and hokie. Glad I had the day off and didn't use vac time just to watch it. That was just plain awful.
The build up, hoopla and manufactured excitement of this made for TV event reminds me a lot of another made for TV event we suffered through years ago. They both had a big build up and a disappointing end.
I remember when Geraldo opened Al Capone's vault and found nothing.
Presented without comment:
"I'd put some psychological stuff in the papers, but it wouldn't do any good 'cause Dale and his boys can't read." -Darrell Waltrip
I hope todays race from Iowa will be better than last night! I can't believe how late the race ended, and it wasn't even raining yesterday!
jd i would like to see you try and produce a race, that would be a sight to see, you'd still complain about it
Cult follower here :-).
Although, may withdraw my membership. "JR has certain kind of fans"???? You may have insulted a few of your cult people!
How do you east coast people do this. We are in Texas, on way to Indy500, and have an hour on you guys and were going nuts!
Way too long and tooooooooo late! Thank God for the DVR.
Too mucy foolish hype. 3 hour Race Day. Didn't watch. Trying to avoid overload!
Ok, something is definitely not right with DW. He does seem like he is just babbling. Maybe they told him to get hyped up, so he is talking fast which makes him mumble and mispronounce words.
Ps...JD, because we are traveling I didn't get your memo to make really really positive comments about the truck race. Which by the way was outstanding! But of course it was in time so I could add negative comments on the All Star race. See above.
Your humble and loyal zombie.
Happy to step into the chair anytime! You know what it would look like? A Camping World Truck Series race on SPEED.
No phony hype, no psycho announcers with their own agenda, no tight shots of single cars or in-car cams.
Search "bill of rights" on my blog and read what I think a NASCAR telecast should do. It should simply be the eyes of the fans not at the track. Period.
PSs..Palmetto said:
"You want to make this sucker exciting? Run three 15- to 17-car 25-lap heat races, seeded by current driver points. The top four or five from each advance to a 50-lap finale".
Great idea! Now that I would watch live....if real SPEED production crew televised it!
Di, it's an interesting mix.
1 - Fans of his father who carry the tradition on with Junior.
2 - Female fans who gravitate to him for many reasons, including what he has been through in life and his family/sister.
3 - Kids who only know him from TV ads and iRacing.
It's a fascinating fan base!
Not add a discordant note, but I decided to gust go with the flow on Friday and Saturday; not read the racing media or the critics or the Planet. I just decided to watch, and, you know what? I actually enjoyed myself. Really.
Maybe there IS something to what my grandmother said: "If you wouldn't watch the news so much you would feel better."
But that's just me. :)
PS: IMO The elephant in the room at the race was the FR-9. I cannot recall one mention of it directly, but it was a key variable.
I actually thought Mikey did a better job of analying the race than DW did. I don't know if it was because the announcers were sitting outside or if because Mikey was in the booth, but DW was extra hyper and was just plain goofy most of the night.
I know this is late, and has probably been said multiple times, but I was horrified that Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond were relegated to some sort of weird social media world. NOT the proper roles for them.
The race was terrible as usual! And the hukster Waltrips made it impossible to view with the volume on. Although I can't blame everything on the two idiot Waltrips as the racing is soooo bad!
