I did not watch live, and my tape cut off at 9 p.m., so I'll never know if KABC did the same thing.
*In the "football game" on CBS that Musburger referenced, Kentucky upset LSU (then the #1 college football team in the country) in triple-overtime.
*ESPN and ESPN2 did air in-progress updates on Saturday night on their respective "bottom lines," and there was also cut-ins on ESPNEWS. Two incidents. First Gordon bumps Junior out of the way. They will be teammates next year but what does Rusty Wallace say? Actually I can't remember exact words. I kinda ignore most of what he says but it was to the effect of that he thinks there will be retaliation. This went on for a while even though it is now known that Junior apologized for the incident. And this wasn't even the worst.

During last extended yellow ESPN goes to the infield studio (which by the way is not always in the infield- at New Hampshire it was on the outside of the track on the backstretch but I digress.

You have Gordon leading and Kurt Busch second. You have evidence of the owner talking to Busch telling him to be smart - no wrecks and telling him that Gordon will let him go if he has a run.

But of course Brad "Voice of the Fan" Dougherty has to bring the whole race broadcast down to the level of Professional Wrestling- kind of a smack down of NASCAR. He believes that Busch will take out Gordon, has nothing to lose, is leaving the team anyway etc etc yadayadaya.

Kenny Wallace on Victory Lane ripped that comment big time and I applaud Kenny for bringing ESPN to task.

These two comments are why the ESPN broadcasting team are rookies with little current experience (with exceptions noted in a second), are being unprofessional in their brodcasts and should be replaced or reassigned. Of course exceptions are Bestwick and Burns who have countless years in NASCAR broadcasting.

What the hell can Brian France be thinking if and when he hears a NASCAR broadcaster tell the listeners that one car is going to take out another car.

I was somewhat disgusted by the whole broadcast on Saturday night.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2080132098367510832.post-80253333524234540902007-10-14T19:28:00.000-04:002007-10-14T19:28:00.000-04:00Did the pit reporters go have dinner during the ra...Did the pit reporters go have dinner during the race? Seems there were no pit road reports until I believe Steve LeTart was interviewed by Jamie Be-Little. She asked some stupid question like do you think you can make it to the end (basically saying your driver has crashed every race here you stupid crew chief but I digress) - point is can't the ESPN pit reporters ask intelligent questions. Seems like booth guys especially Jerry want to do pit reporters job of interpreting what the drivers are thinking instead of getting interviews. ABest has been discussed as him being the designated hitter this year and Dave Burns has been muzzled. Mike Massaro asks stupid questions and Jamie Be-Little has no clue.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2080132098367510832.post-47852082101232914142007-10-14T16:05:00.000-04:002007-10-14T16:05:00.000-04:00JD I didn't see the race live until lap 90 or so b...JD I didn't see the race live until lap 90 or so but did eventually watch the entire race this morning. Thankfully I could skip the commercials. I had issue with a few things although I thought some of the camera angles were better. Less zoom on a single car so I could get a better understanding of were they were on the track and in relation to other cars. Some of my issues were the booth appeared to take sides and blasted JG when he bumped Junior and the brought it up several times. Not once did anyone try to explain JG's side or possible reason other than JG just tried to dump him. Isn't the booth suppose to be nonbias? No interview or follow up with John Andretti who wrecked pretty hard. Why was Ward Burton out, what happened to Elliot Sadler? These drives all have fans who what to know what happened to them and nothing was ever said. Poor explaination of why JJ went from 9th to 19th to 14th- picked that up from his incar. It seems several of the Hendrick cars had trouble on that same restart- you would hav thought that was a story that should have been mentioned and possibly followed up on. I'll have to watch Victory Lane for post race interviews and those stories. Just some thoughts hope it helpsNewracefanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16324764517098771035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2080132098367510832.post-22024932504713619282007-10-14T10:48:00.000-04:002007-10-14T10:48:00.000-04:00I didn't mean to imply that network coverage is th...I didn't mean to imply that network coverage is the only reason ratings are down. There are many other reasons that factor into lower ratings. I'm just saying that network coverage and availability of other non-network outlets to watch/listen to the race contribute to lower ratings.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2080132098367510832.post-47164212851222160782007-10-14T10:42:00.000-04:002007-10-14T10:42:00.000-04:00I agree with some of you. It's really frustrating when I know more and can more effectively communicate what is happening from my living room than the crew can do from the booth. This is really the first time I have felt like this - even the TNT/NBC crew never made me feel this way! (I actually like Wally - and I think every Nascar broadcast should be required to use Yocum!)

Thank goodness for Hotpass! That is keeping me watching, but the downside is that I have to flip around to hear what is going on with other drivers. If my driver isn't covered that week, then I flip to the channel closest to where he is racing so I am able to see his car while the excellent commentators are covering the driver he is racing against. It's working pretty well, but it's a very interactive viewing process and I have to stay on top of it - which makes it difficult to do other things while watching the race and I usually lose the whole afternoon.

I think they need to consider an overhaul of the ESPN crew over the offseason. My vote would be Bestwick, Jarrett and Petree in the booth (even using Brad as a back-up) and Punch, Massaro, Burns and Little or Spake on pit road. Rusty and Brad could take care of the infield studio with support from the rest of the team.

No wonder ratings are down. Everyone is resorting to Hotpass, Sirius (or other MRN/PRN radio coverage), or the internet. It doesn't surprise me at all!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2080132098367510832.post-31522208245556191382007-10-14T10:16:00.000-04:002007-10-14T10:16:00.000-04:00Wanna know why we don't get good postrace coverage...Wanna know why we don't get good postrace coverage from these people?

From David Poole's column:
Feinberg is already thinking about how the race will end, both on the track and on the air. If the race ends early, that leaves more time for the top finishers to be interviewed. But viewership typically peaks as the race ends, then falls off dramatically. The more time there is after the checkered flag, the more that drop in viewership can pull down the overall average rating.

“Then the headline in the paper is about the rating being down,” Feinberg says. “You try to do what’s best for the fans, but there is a balance you have to strike.”

And that's why we get screwed. I didn't get any feedback on that from the commentary. I was also wondering if there was a clear shot of the action leading to Matt Kenseth's accident with Andretti? Also, could you tell me how Ryan Newman felt about his blown tire when he was in the lead with 3 laps to go. Obviously a huge disappointment to him and about half the fans in NASCAR who always pull for a guy to win who hasn't won in a while.
I am wondering why, when Tony Stewart played bumper cars with not one, but two other drivers, there was NO COMMENTARY from either of the other drivers crew chiefs, or drivers, nor any comment on the status of those cars. Additionally, Bobby Labonte was trapped in the Pits behind Stewart who had to wait for Kahne to back up. Again, a majority of NASCAR fans are pulling for 'Ol #43 to win just one more....didn't anyone tell you guys that? Where was the reaction to that issue?
For crying out loud, there was a 3 car accident on pit road and it was treated like another 'crazy day" in NASCAR. That was a big issue. We saw hopes and dreams going up in smoke (no pun intended..you do get the possible pun, don't you)? The Booth heard Linda Ronstadt.
What happened in the Post Race?
