In-Progress At Charlotte: NEXTEL Cup Series On ABC

Saturday night at 7PM Eastern Time, ABC carries the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series from Lowe's Motor Speedway. There will be a thirty minute edition of NASCAR Countdown at 7PM, and the race coverage will begin at 7:30PM.

The shortened Countdown show is due to live coverage on ABC of a national college football game which will begin at 3:30PM. The game is scheduled to end at 6:30PM and transition into a thirty minute scoreboard show. That show will collapse down to 7PM for NASCAR coverage should the game run long.

Brent Musburger is busy with college football, so there will be no "show host" for this telecast. Suzy Kolber will anchor NASCAR Countdown and remain in the Infield Studio along with Brad Daugherty. There is no word on if Dale Jarrett will join the Infield team after not qualifying for this event.

Update: Musburger must have made his plane. He is on-hand at the racetrack and there is no Dale Jarrett in the Infield Studio.

In the announce booth will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree. Reporting from pit road will be Allen Bestwick, Mike Massaro, Jamie Little and Dave Burns. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center.

This is a big event for the ESPN on ABC production and announcing crew, who have not been having the kind of success they envisioned when they began their Chase coverage. If Jarrett is added to the crew, the on-air dynamic could be very interesting.

This page will host your comments about tonight's NASCAR programming on ABC. You may add your opinion before, during, or after the coverage. Please read the rules for posting, which are located on the right side of the main page. Your comments should be about the ABC coverage, the personalities, or the opinions being expressed in the forum.

To add your comment, simply click on the COMMENTS button below, and follow the simple instructions. There is nothing to join, and you are not required to leave your email address. Thank you for taking the time to stop-by and leave your opinion at The Daly Planet.

Did anyone else notice the technical problems during the replay of the crash? they were show the on board cam and for some reason they cut to another angle in the middle of the replay. they then cut back to the on board.

Anonymous said...

What happened to Andretta, Kenseth & Waltrip? We haven't seen any replay on it! It's definitely NOT Matt's year!

Anonymous said...

reference morse code - interesting statement from the "guys" in the booth. Where did they read that comment? hmmmmm

Jerry goes out "ESPN on ABC?" Do they read this board. interesting.

Anonymous said...

Did I hear Jerry right? Did he say that Andretti had a good run last week at Talladega?

Anonymous said...

Rusty favors the duece? no way! Did you hear him earlier in this race mention "the MILLER LITE car number 2"
he'd probably mispronounce Bud or Coors if he really had to mention the other sponcers, which he never does, as they probably don't have ad buys for Rusty's commentary.

I wonder if ESPN is giving NASCAR updates coming out of commercial during the football games on ESPN and ESPN2 tonight.

October 13, 2007 10:14 PM

I think she meant he started the chase in 5th place.

Anonymous said...

I appreciate ESPN cutting away from pit exit to see a close up of the 26 and then the 48.

stricklinfan82 said...

Wrong. He only had 1 win before the Chase started so he definitely wasn't seeded 5th.

Sophia said...

PRN guys say WALTRIP is listed as the LEADER of the race..but they do not know how this is possible....does NASCAR check their own boards at the track

Anonymous said...

Why are we in the Tech Center when the top 10 has drivers who havent seen all night long? I'd like to know how they got up there. Maybe it's just me...

Labbie said...

Vince, unfortunately I'm not smokin' anyhting. If I was, it might make this broadcast tolerable. ;)

Sophia said...

Ok...NOW PRN says Waltrip is 26th?

I am going back to the TV..these guys goof off more than MRN

stricklinfan82 said...

He pitted before pit road was open so when everyone made their stops legally he got in the front of the field. He won't officially be scored as the leader though when NASCAR reviews the race before posting the official results since he was under penalty when he took the lead.

Anonymous said...

Well we never saw the replay here in Houston. We have very special local channels that break away for local updates! Some folks are cleaning up a park so we got to see that instead!

Anonymous said...

---When they finally showed ONE replay of what happened to Elliott Sadler during the commercial break, the camera was so far away from the 19 that you couldn't tell what happened.

That made me mad. Elliott is a very popular guy and his fans deserve better. News to ESPN: some of the most popular drivers (based on the current MPD list)other than Jr. also aren't in the chase. That includes Sadler, Kahne, and Waltrip. Plus DJ, but he's not in the race. (Waltrip just crashed)

The fans of all the drivers, and not just the MPD ones, deserve better explanations than they're getting.

Thought the coil binding animation was interesting and informative for a change.

stricklinfan82 said...

Watching on Hotpass Tony Stewart seems to have finally gotten his car properly repaired because he's finally passing cars instead of running by himiself behind the pack. I figured those of you that only have ABC to watch the race would appreciate the update.

Sophia said...

WHY ARE THEY INTERVIEWING KYLE?? ANd got rid of that stupid crawl.

Where the hell is Labonte...these PRN guys are NO MRN.

Something about these guys annoy me.

MSN ROCKS. I am going to try the tv full time for a bit. Geez

Anonymous said...

yes and why did Andy show the coil binding update instead of Tim.

Anonymous said...

How did Johnson end up in 17th? Phone rang and I missed pit stops - did ABC get it covered either?

Anonymous said...

did the pit road reporters go home? I can't remember the last pit report.

stricklinfan82 said...

Something strange has been going on with ABC's feed. When both ABC and Hotpass are on commercial there is only like a 3 second delay but when the race comes back on there's like a 15 second delay (ABC is behind). Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

Anonymous said...

most popular drivers, I think

Anonymous said...

Today's race is a great example of why a broadcast needs a strong play-by-play man. So many strategies, but Jerry and the gang just can't keep them all straight for us.

Labbie said...

Makes sense, thanks.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, MPD = Most Popular Driver. The yearly internet fan poll that Junior wins every year (four years counting) that the sponsors use in part to justify his high-dollar sponsorship - even though he doesn't have a championship.

Gordon is ususally second and Kahne is usually third when the final results are in next month.

---The current list of top-ten drivers, in no particular order, includes Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Dale Jarrett, Jimmie Johnson, Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip.

Anonymous said...

I think your right, they are watching this blog. They just starting talking about strategies!!!!

Sophia said...

I had to turn off the radio...with the muted tv, the PRN guys being great one moment, and getting on my nerves the next, and reading here..you guys are MORE INFORMATIVE. SOMETHING had to give.

StrickFan, thanks for the waltrip explanation how he was listed the LEADER.

I heard that Zippy said keep Tony's car in the pits until they fixed it right no matter how long it took..

So, now I am back to the tv and this place. My house mate watches NASCAR sometimes to humor me..and none of my in real life friends watch races and think I have lost me mind with my NASCAR SEASON addiction.

:-)

Ok...more google earth shots and speak of Calamity Corner.

Oh, anybody know why that bump3 guy is NO LONGER on you tube? I could not find his links yesterday. JD mentioned him in an article and I have watched some of his criticisms.

Thanks for all who give info here on the site.

NASCAR FAN, sorry about your local station breaking in....they do that here but THANKFULLY I have two ABC affiliatese.

back to the race...I hope Pit road stays good the rest of the night. JJ spins!!!

Sophia said...

Ok we miss the green start ALMOST because of CHAD KNAUSE and JJ in the pits??!?!?!

When I heard those engines revving, I was getting NERVOUS.

Who cares....I must admit, Chad was smooth on the radio after jimmie spun, and said in detail, immediately what to fix on the car...in a calm manner. Gotta admit, that was impressive.

But don't make us ALMOST miss the RESTART over a pit came, ok?

I think this TV crew can get so passionate about what is going on that they forget about the rest of the race.

stricklinfan82 said...

Imagine that. The first time a Chaser falls out of the race ESPN finds a way to send a reporter to interview him in the garage area. What an amazing coincidence!

More proof that if you aren't in the Chase or named Dale Jr. you don't matter to ESPN.

Vince said...

Hey a pit reporter actually interviewing a driver that got wrecked! Of course it was AB doing the interviewing with Matt Kenseth. He's probably the only reporter the drivers will talk to.

Sophia, regarding Bump3:

I had posted that link in another forum. I just went and found it and got the dreaded
"This video has been removed due to terms of use violation."

I'll bet ESPN made them take it down because of how bad it made them look.

stricklinfan82 said...

Yeah watching on Hotpass Tony has made an incredible recovery. He couldn't keep up with the pack for the longest time after the pit road crash and now he's 13th. How can ESPN miss that story, especially when it involves a Chaser? Amazing.

Sophia said...

Boy, do they even MENTION LABONTE??? He is in the top 10.

I mean really....I LOVE jr but I wish they would LEAVE THE GUY ALONE.

It's a wonder they haven't updated us to see if Jr's car is still chattering like Morse Code.

Well, is it??

:-)

I think the morse code in Jr's car is saying "Leave me alone"

Anonymous said...

I think the number of comments is related to the frustration level. We are all getting more and more frustrated with ESPN/ABC and NASCAR's lack of concern for the TV viewers.

Karen said...

Looks like trash to me on the 07, yeah.

stricklinfan82 said...

Tony Raines is still on the lead lap. Do you think he's planning out what he's gonna tell Rusty the first time ESPN calls down to their "In-Race Reporter?" LOL.

Sophia said...

Thanks Rick, for the bump3 update.

I could not remember his name but had him marked as a fave (and I HAVE no faves at you tube!!) I enjoyed his videos but wondered when ESPN would get fed up.

Haus14 said...

Anonymous said...

How bad can the broadcast be? I only have to have my 60" HDTV on to watch, the Radio to PRN to hear what I'm watching, The computer with leaderboard to let me know where my drivers at, and this board to help me understand my frustration.
I've been watching NA$CAR since 1979 on Wide world of sports and this season has been a struggle to stay interested in the race.

I absolutely do not know what I did during commercials before I discovered this blog. Just love it.

Anonymous said...

I have noticed an ongoing trend here. A lot of the people here are just complaining or insulting the crew.

Don't get me wrong I am not a ESPN apologist. I just want more constructive criticism.

Anonymous said...

Anyone notice that now that Jr is no longer in the top 10, we haven't heard a thing about him? If that doesn't prove ESPN is a "front-runner only" network, I don't know what does.

Sophia said...

HELLO!!! Isn't that a pink car that went down pit road before McMurray or did I hallucinate that a moment ago?? No word from ESPU

stricklinfan82 said...

On Hotpass they didn't go to commercial with ABC on the Tony Stewart channel so I could listen to the booth guys talk to each other. They actually had intelligent discussions and observations like "the 2 car is the fastest car out there", "the 8 car has fallen way back", and "the 48 is still one of the fastest cars after that crash".

It's just a shame that stuff like that doesn't make it on the air for whatever reason.

stricklinfan82 said...

And after interrupting the race to show the drawing live, they are now running a crawl across the screen showing the winning powerball numbers again. You've got to be kidding me with this!

Karen, glad you found this site...it does help with frustration..and I think most gripes are constructive!!

Wow...all those commercials all night and they can't give us the last few laps commercial free??? I think we deserve better....they did a that a couple times...and it was fantastic.

Look, I just want to see constructive criticism. Why am i getting shot down for that?

stricklinfan82 said...

What they do is put the video of the drawing over top of the race, taking up about the upper-right 2/3 of the screen. It would be the equivalent of taping a huge piece of paper to the upper right corner of my screen screen. I can see to the left and underneath it, but that basically does no good. During college football games and such they do a "picture in picture" type deal but on NASCAR they just throw the drawing on top of the race.

Sophia said...

Noticed they FINALLY mentioned Labonte.

I love it when they say "we haven't heard much of so and so tonight"

stricklinfan82 said...

Another example of commercial chatter in the ESPN booth. They are noting the top 10 run of Dave Blaney and pointing out how much that will help the top 35 in owner's points battle. Why doesn't this stuff make it to the air?

stricklinfan82 said...

Again, "through the field" only follows the Chase drivers.

1.) Gordon
2.) Bowyer
3.) Busch
4.) Newman - not in Chase, SKIP OVER
5.) Hamlin
6.) J. Burton
7.) B. Labonte - not in Chase, SKIP OVER
8.) Edwards
9.) Blaney - not in Chase, SKIP OVER
10.) Johnson

This is not right.

Anonymous said...

And I work for CAT so it would be nice to hear them talk a little bit about Blaney! C'mon ABC.

stricklinfan82 said...

The announcers were talking about Blaney amongst themselves during the break. I don't understand why they don't bother to mention it on the air, especially now that they are giving a shout-out to A.J. Allmendinger.

Here's the thing... its not called though the field. its called IN THE CHASE. there is the reason they don't cover others during a segment called IN THE CHASE.
I agree they should cover others ...but not in a segment about the chase.

I thought I heard these guys NEVER talked during the commercials in the booth...nice to hear otherwise and I agree...why is the BEST conversation not being said on ABC/ESPN?

To show you my mindset? I was hoping EVERY CHASE RACE would be WON by a non chaser!! :-)

I said it last night and I will say it again..I LOVE RACING UNDER THE LIGHTS!

The cars look great, the paint schemes look great.

It's all great at night. Bad coverage and all.

And this site to vent, kvetch and praise on things.

p.s. I am super bummed for Schrader not being in the 21 car...he will not be happy.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED to LAbonte's car???

That sucks...I know it's a rule but it's a bad one.

Somebody just yelled go home somebody by 11's pit.

Gordon acts like last night was dirty...Remember they never took MUCH TIME to clean up in between all the wrecks. That was most curious.

If it's about SAFETY, why didn't they red flag the BUSCH race, too??

Confused.

Red flag.. local news was supposed to start at 8:30 PDT... it looks like they wont interrupt the broadcast. maybe because the weekend anchor is a dale Jr. fan.

the 66

stricklinfan82 said...

I'm thinking a lot of cars might come in for tires since there are only 19 cars on the lead lap (taking away Hamlin who will have to start at the tail end of the longest line even if he can fix his problems). ESPN would be well served to discuss potential strategy. Instead, since Jeff's staying out nothing else matters. Recap recap recap, chase chase chase. Nothing else matters. On Hotpass it sounds like Tony's going to pit from 12th so a lot of cars in front and behind him might follow. Thank goodness for Hotpass!

Labbie said...

Rusty just said there were 4 guys with a legitimate chance to win and then mentioned Burton in 5th.

Sophia said...

the really bad thing AGAIN about tonight...running overtime and will we get ANY INFORMATION after the race???It ain't primetime.

Will that make a diff?

Anonymous said...

Hamlin's crew looked like they didn't want to get up from underneath the car during the red flag. I'm surprised the officials weren't a little more forceful and fast in getting them away from the car. It looked like one guy sat up but then started looking under the car again, like he felt like he could look at it as long as he didn't work on it.

Anyway, pointless red flag yakking allowed us to change over and watch Bon Jovi singing on Saturday Night Live, so all is well. Now we're back to the race.

I think we should see at least a 10 minute post race show.

No, all the channels just went blank except for Kevin Harvick's.

Sophia said...

Well this TOTALLY STINKS...go off the air right away?

HOpe you are HAPPY NASCAR..no publicity for your PRIME TIME CHASE cars, sponsors...not to mention fans

CRAPOLA. No speed until tomorrow night.

Vince said...

Wow, they gave us what, two whole interviews after the race. How nice of them..........sigh.

Sofia, Nascar Leaderboard had Bobby finishing 12th.

Later everybody. It's been fun.

Well I gave ESPN a shot tonight. Back to HotPass for the rest of the season.

NoCal.... It is either Comcast or local ABC who... right at 9pm.... on the money goes tosome freakin' game show....bang.... IT is bad enough we have to deal with the idiots at the network level.... but jees.... we gotta fight the locals as well?

Anonymous said...

there are INFOMERCIALS on my local station!!! this would have been a perfect time for SPEED to air victory lane.

stricklinfan82 said...

Well now the Hotpass channels came back on. Just in time to catch the very end of Gordon's interview and the "thanks for watching Hotpass" messages on the other channels. What a night, LOL.

Anonymous said...

No post race run-down. No interviews that round out the story... no Victory Lane tonight. This really sucks! Give me back my Fox and God help me... TNT... They at least saty with something after the race.

Anonymous said...

JD, why would ABC rush off the air? there is no important programing that ABC needed to get to. Is this the effect of local affiliates complaining? If so, this problem needs to be addressed immediately.

Vince

Thanks for telling me where Labonte finished! Gotta give my two black and whites their snack (cats) so they will stop staring at me.

Then check online to see how Jr and my other favorites did.

I hope NASCAR is HAPPY with this DREADFUL TREATMENT by ABC. Gosh.

Would be nice to have alloted 10 minutes.

Sorry for those of you who's stations cut out.

Been fun.

Bevo, nice to see you pop in and come out of your shell, lol.

I think HELEN KELLER could broadcast the game better with more details than these guys.

MEOW HISS!!

P.S. Glad to see somebody else missing TNT!

You know ESPN ABC is bad when you MISS TNT!

But I STILL LOVED, LOVED their Pepsi 400 limited interruption coverage!!

does anyone have ESPN NEWS? Is there post race coverage on that channel?

Anonymous said...

I enjoyed ESPN/ABC TOTALLY ignoring Johnson running out of fuel on the restart. And Ryan Newman's crash. As decent as last night's Busch coverage was, tonight's Cup coverage was that awful.

Anonymous said...

did espn say why jimmie went from 6th to 14th?

Anonymous said...

Finally a great broadcast. Yup! I had friends over and the talking in the room was load enough to drowned out the audio on the tv. It was great.
When will ESPN learn the two post race interviews does not cut it? Waltrip finished 10th after his spin for one of his best races of the year so that means he will be all over ESPN next week. Oh wait, He has his show on SPEED so ESPN will not talk to him at all. Poor Sports!

Labbie said...

Johnson came into the pits after Newman's crash, he actually made up a couple of positions to get to 14th.

has anyone seen ESPN news?

No coverage. Just a blip in the corner of the screen saying JG won.

I didn't have any problem with Hotpass. I watched the #20 channel until Larry Mac and Wendy signed off.

I came into tonight with high hopes after ESPN's solid Busch Series effort on Friday night but they let us down big time yet again.

- multiple missed restarts

- ZERO coverage of drivers not in the Chase and not named Dale Jr. Tons of drivers made unscheduled pit stops and only Chase driver Kevin Harvick was documented on the air (twice). Several non-Chasers fell out of the race or went behind the wall. ESPN never mentioned any of them unless they crashed and never interviewed anyone. That of course changed when Chaser Matt Kenseth went behind the wall. He was almost instantly interviewed. Hell, Ryan Newman WAS LEADING THE RACE with 3 laps to go when he crashed and none of ESPN's cameras were even watching him. Again I repeat, the leader (a non-Chaser) crashed with 3 laps to go and none of the cameras were watching THE LEADER at the time. Are you kidding me?

- I hate the "Through the field" that only follows Chase drivers. It is very insulting to document the days of all the Chasers while skipping all the non-Chasers, even when they were running in the top 5.

- Brent Musburger and Suzy Kolber... sigh

I guess we'll have to wait yet another week for ESPN's Cup race coverage to catch up to the quality of their Busch races (that sounds silly to even say that but it's true)

Turned to ESPN News immediately after the race; their breaking news box has both the Kentucky-LSU game and Jeff Gordon winning in the box.

About a minute after that, they showed the footage of Gordon crossing the finish line and replayed his entire Jamie Little interview. No highlights (I assume they haven't packaged those).

Then they showed the top 8 (why eight?) on one side of a graphic and the finish of six of seven "notables" like Earnhardt Jr and Montoya on the other side. Then they went on to summarize playoff baseball, Red Sox I believe, that is still going on.

NASCAR Now tonight at 1:30 AM ET.

Anonymous said...

NASCAR Now is airing, supposdely live, at 1:30 AM tonight. But there is a football game on ESPN2 that was supposed to end at 12:15 that has 10 more minutes of regulation. So it has already pushed 20 minutes into Baseball Tonight, scheduled for 12:15-1:30. I don't know how if NN will be delayed or BT will be cut short.

In Charlotte, the ABC station is supposed to have its own 30 minutes post race show, but it was supposed to air at midnight, so I do not know if they will still air it or not after the news. Probably so.

Anonymous said...

is the post race show also online?

Sophia said...

Wow..so many comments...I hope that proves JD will benefit from a stand alone message board to end the scrolling and Russian word veri deal!

I learned MORE about the post race stuff after coming back from unloading the dishwasher and feeding the cats. NORMALLY I would not watch Nascar NOW but am a chronic insomniac. After i watch an old dvd of THAT GIRL, I will check ESPN to 'see' if they are talking about the race.

Now off to check the final race lineup.

Thanks again, JD. SOME GREAT fellow posters here and more discovering all the time.

I guess we wont be seeing NASCAR Now until late in the night. ESPN2 wants to air ESPN news until the end of the baseball game on FOX. Then they will air the full edition baseball tonight. BTW the baseball game on FOX may not end soon.

ESPN News had decent race highlights, but they only had one interview in the media center with the winning driver, crew chief, and owner.

The anchor said Jimmie fell way back in the standings. Why would he say that when Jimmie did not move one position in the standings!!!

Highlights on sports center on ESPN, but they only had the winner interview also.

I don't see it on the website, though possibly they might put clips up later? I don't know if they'll consider it important enough or not.

http://www.wsoctv.com/index.html

I missed the beginning of the show, but they had an interview with Jeff Gordon and brief interviews with Bowyer, Kyle busch, Edwards, Newman (I felt sorry for Newman, he said he was just going for it because he hadn't won a race in so long).

The show was mostly features, there was a reporter in JJ Yeley's pit tonight reporting on his crew. There was also an interesting piece on ABC Sports and how they put the race broadcast together. I can't recall all the stats put out in the report but something like 17,000 feet of cable used at a track like Charlotte, whatever that means.

The executive producer said they have more manpower on races than any other sporting event out there. It was 200 people working tonight's race. Andy Petree and the guy who installs the in car cameras were also interviewed.

The Oklahoma City ABC station showed local news during the Countdown. Like LA, we went from news to the start command. We didn't get a full countdown last week either.

I listened to the radio for the last part of the race -- couldn't take ESPN/ABC anymore! I can't believe they don't even take time to show us the full finishing order. How long would that take?? Thank goodness for PRN -- at least I got post-race interviews. It's a long wait for Victory Lane tomorrow night.

(BTW...I love reading this site. Thanks to John and the rest of you. Somehow it helps to know I'm not the only one frustrated by the coverage this year.)

Anonymous said...

why doesn't SPEED or ESPN have those interviews right after the race? That's sad that a local station beats ESPN in post race coverage.

Also, it looks like we wont see NASCAR Now until 3am.

Sophia said...

Where is NN? 1.30AM and they are braggin on a special ESPN HOUR NEWS on ESPN2? Bait and switch again...

and no NASCAR.

Hope TPTB at NASCAR are happy.

This shoddy coverage is killing this sport.

A friend of mine who watches football says whenver ESPN shows clips of NASCAR, they smug talking heads always appear to be making fun of NASCAR.

I saw this one months ago so it must still be true.

EDIT

Just saw the updated posts about NN..thanks.

Well they can brag ALL THEY WANT about what it takes to cover a NASCAR race...David Poole wrote about it on NASCAR.com. There were articles LAST season about this.

Funny thing is..ESPN is WORSE THAN EVERYBODY...But especially for the CUP races????

In JD's Q&A I finally ask him

WHY is the Busch coverage better than the Cup?

I say ESPN is NOT inventing the wheel...just rolling along. They like to make themselves sound SO SPECIAL.

ESPN NEWS on ESPN2 showing highlights with Rusty...lasted about 15 seconds.

Woop tee do.

They usually have VL even on Saturday nights but if something such as a live show is on they don't show it. I don't see anything on the schedule so I'm not sure why we didn't get VL tonight. And they *used* to have a Saturday edition of Speed News but canceled it and it often stayed live for Saturday night events. I remember when FOX first took over, we'd often be told to go to SPEED in a few minutes for more post-race coverage. They'd interrupt whatever was on and we'd see additional interviews and some of the media interviews. Plus a recap for the boyz. I also recall either last year or the year before they did that a few times gave us an extended post-race via SPEED because of a baseball or something else coming up.

I left this with ABC this evening: "I was wondering if you could tell me how John Andretti was after his accident. I didn't get any feedback on that from the commentary. I was also wondering if there was a clear shot of the action leading to Matt Kenseth's accident with Andretti? Also, could you tell me how Ryan Newman felt about his blown tire when he was in the lead with 3 laps to go. Obviously a huge disappointment to him and about half the fans in NASCAR who always pull for a guy to win who hasn't won in a while.
I am wondering why, when Tony Stewart played bumper cars with not one, but two other drivers, there was NO COMMENTARY from either of the other drivers crew chiefs, or drivers, nor any comment on the status of those cars. Additionally, Bobby Labonte was trapped in the Pits behind Stewart who had to wait for Kahne to back up. Again, a majority of NASCAR fans are pulling for 'Ol #43 to win just one more....didn't anyone tell you guys that? Where was the reaction to that issue?
For crying out loud, there was a 3 car accident on pit road and it was treated like another 'crazy day" in NASCAR. That was a big issue. We saw hopes and dreams going up in smoke (no pun intended..you do get the possible pun, don't you)? The Booth heard Linda Ronstadt.
What happened in the Post Race? Did everyone just pack up and go home?
Here is the bottom line: your coverage is ruining the experience for me."

With ABC/ESPN coverage, I find myself asking for answers to questions that never come. It is just no fun to watch.

NASCAR Now is finally on the air. 1 hour and 15 minutes after it was scheduled to air. Also, no one said when the show was going to air after it was delayed. I caught it now by accident.

Anonymous said...

Without PRN, I'd have missed several key developments.

ESPN/ABC should be embarrassed about that fact, but my guess is, they don't care.

Anonymous said...

Wanna know why we don't get good postrace coverage from these people?

From David Poole's column:
Feinberg is already thinking about how the race will end, both on the track and on the air. If the race ends early, that leaves more time for the top finishers to be interviewed. But viewership typically peaks as the race ends, then falls off dramatically. The more time there is after the checkered flag, the more that drop in viewership can pull down the overall average rating.

“Then the headline in the paper is about the rating being down,” Feinberg says. “You try to do what’s best for the fans, but there is a balance you have to strike.”

And that's why we get screwed. I guess FOX doesn't worry about this, nor did NBC.

I agree with some of you. I've been a long time Nascar fan and this coverage is really making me re-think my commitment to watching every weekend. It's really frustrating when I know more and can more effectively communicate what is happening from my living room than the crew can do from the booth. This is really the first time I have felt like this - even the TNT/NBC crew never made me feel this way! (I actually like Wally - and I think every Nascar broadcast should be required to use Yocum!)

Thank goodness for Hotpass! That is keeping me watching, but the downside is that I have to flip around to hear what is going on with other drivers. If my driver isn't covered that week, then I flip to the channel closest to where he is racing so I am able to see his car while the excellent commentators are covering the driver he is racing against. It's working pretty well, but it's a very interactive viewing process and I have to stay on top of it - which makes it difficult to do other things while watching the race and I usually lose the whole afternoon.

I think they need to consider an overhaul of the ESPN crew over the offseason. My vote would be Bestwick, Jarrett and Petree in the booth (even using Brad as a back-up) and Punch, Massaro, Burns and Little or Spake on pit road. Rusty and Brad could take care of the infield studio with support from the rest of the team.

No wonder ratings are down. Everyone is resorting to Hotpass, Sirius (or other MRN/PRN radio coverage), or the internet. It doesn't surprise me at all!

Anonymous said...

I didn't mean to imply that network coverage is the only reason ratings are down. There are many other reasons that factor into lower ratings. I'm just saying that network coverage and availability of other non-network outlets to watch/listen to the race contribute to lower ratings.

JD I didn't see the race live until lap 90 or so but did eventually watch the entire race this morning. Thankfully I could skip the commercials. I had issue with a few things although I thought some of the camera angles were better. Less zoom on a single car so I could get a better understanding of were they were on the track and in relation to other cars. Some of my issues were the booth appeared to take sides and blasted JG when he bumped Junior and the brought it up several times. Not once did anyone try to explain JG's side or possible reason other than JG just tried to dump him. Isn't the booth suppose to be nonbias? No interview or follow up with John Andretti who wrecked pretty hard. Why was Ward Burton out, what happened to Elliot Sadler? These drives all have fans who what to know what happened to them and nothing was ever said. Poor explaination of why JJ went from 9th to 19th to 14th- picked that up from his incar. It seems several of the Hendrick cars had trouble on that same restart- you would hav thought that was a story that should have been mentioned and possibly followed up on. I'll have to watch Victory Lane for post race interviews and those stories. Just some thoughts hope it helps

Did the pit reporters go have dinner during the race? Seems there were no pit road reports until I believe Steve LeTart was interviewed by Jamie Be-Little. She asked some stupid question like do you think you can make it to the end (basically saying your driver has crashed every race here you stupid crew chief but I digress) - point is can't the ESPN pit reporters ask intelligent questions. Seems like booth guys especially Jerry want to do pit reporters job of interpreting what the drivers are thinking instead of getting interviews. ABest has been discussed as him being the designated hitter this year and Dave Burns has been muzzled. Mike Massaro asks stupid questions and Jamie Be-Little has no clue.

I have given this some thought and this morning listening to WFAN (Boomer Esiason) wondering if when Patriots play the Colts (sorry kind of a Jerry Punch football analogy-bear with me a bit) in three weeks will the Colts take out Brady or Pats take out Manning.

Now lets revisit Saturdays Cup race. Two incidents. First Gordon bumps Junior out of the way. They will be teammates next year but what does Rusty Wallace say? Actually I can't remember exact words. I kinda ignore most of what he says but it was to the effect of that he thinks there will be retaliation. This went on for a while even though it is now known that Junior apologized for the incident. And this wasn't even the worst.

During last extended yellow ESPN goes to the infield studio (which by the way is not always in the infield- at New Hampshire it was on the outside of the track on the backstretch but I digress.

You have Gordon leading and Kurt Busch second. You have evidence of the owner talking to Busch telling him to be smart - no wrecks and telling him that Gordon will let him go if he has a run.

But of course Brad "Voice of the Fan" Dougherty has to bring the whole race broadcast down to the level of Professional Wrestling- kind of a smack down of NASCAR. He believes that Busch will take out Gordon, has nothing to lose, is leaving the team anyway etc etc yadayadaya.

Kenny Wallace on Victory Lane ripped that comment big time and I applaud Kenny for bringing ESPN to task.

These two comments are why the ESPN broadcasting team are rookies with little current experience (with exceptions noted in a second), are being unprofessional in their brodcasts and should be replaced or reassigned. Of course exceptions are Bestwick and Burns who have countless years in NASCAR broadcasting.

What the hell can Brian France be thinking if and when he hears a NASCAR broadcaster tell the listeners that one car is going to take out another car.

I was somewhat disgusted by the whole broadcast on Saturday night.

Some comments and responses:
*The station referred to that switched to the game show was KGO, and the program was probably Jeopardy! KABC also aired Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune after the race, and also Oprah. I did not watch live, and my tape cut off at 9 p.m., so I'll never know if KABC did the same thing.
*In the "football game" on CBS that Musburger referenced, Kentucky upset LSU (then the #1 college football team in the country) in triple-overtime.
*ESPN and ESPN2 did air in-progress updates on Saturday night on their respective "bottom lines," and there was also cut-ins on ESPNEWS. (I know since I was in a bar with lots of TVs.)
