In-Progress At Daytona: Bud Shootout On Fox Sports

The veteran NASCAR on Fox team returns Saturday night to cover the Bud Shootout at 8PM Eastern Time. Finally, NASCAR racing action returns live to prime time TV.

Mike Joy continues to anchor the Fox Sports coverage, joined by Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds in the booth. On pit road will be Krista Voda, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Dick Berggren. Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond will also be along for the ride in the Hollywood Hotel.

With the race profile heightened because of the practice accidents and the Kurt Busch vs. Tony Stewart feud, this pre-season special will be a big draw for TV viewers.

SPEED has provided a full day of live coverage from Daytona, including Cup practice and the ARCA race. This included the NASCAR on Fox crew calling the practice session, and it was clear that they were confident and prepared for this evening's race.

As racing returns, fans will once again be watching for several TV production issues. Last season, the NASCAR on Fox Director chose to only show the winning car cross the finish line. Despite the roar of the fans, this practice continued throughout the entire package. It should be interesting to see what the production team chooses to show the viewers at home on the final lap.

Fans also had their fill of the "Fox 3-D" animated replays, which often showed-up to only state the obvious. This system from Sportvision uses GPS to duplicate in an animated fashion the locations of the cars on the track and then creates a replay effect. Even with the limited field in the Shootout, this effect was used last season with less than stellar results. Perhaps, we will see the updated version Saturday night.

This page will serve to host your comments about the Bud Shootout on Fox Sports. To add your opinion, simply click on the COMMENTS below and follow the easy instructions. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

  1. Well, NASCAR can't say that ESPN.com isn't giving the shootout it's full attention. The Shootout coverage takes up the top left part of the home page with a big headline, picture and several stories.

Then again, it was this way last year around Daytona but the NASCAR coverage on the main page lessened as the months went on.

The main headline on the home page is a David Newton story saying several "sources" confirm that Stewart did hit Busch last night, which ended the meeting and made the meeting today necessary.

  5. Rats, I forgot we would be forced to hear 'singing'....wonder who will butcher, I mean sing the Anthem?

    Yawn.

Least these guys aren't horrible or offensive.

yay, FOX went to commercial during song.

    THANK YOU !!

  6. Even though I do not have HD I still swear you can see the difference in picture quality sometimes...I have TW cable but have noticed this when room mate watches Football games as well.

Last night SPEED looked great but they do not have SPEED HD on TW in my area anyhow...read they are behind in paperwork in many areas which must frustrate those of you with HD tvs.

  7. Anthem isn't awful and acapella is hard to do. I like it when they show the driver by the car. Looks like Tony has a girlfriend and where's Buffy Waltrip

  10. Liked having Harvick at the cutaway car it helped me understand what they were trying to say altough I'm getting a little tired of hearing "bump stop"

  11. Tony's old gf showing up completely explains the wreck last night & his attitude on Thursday ...

He really needs to get rid of her permanently ... instead of this on-again / off-again junk ... She always looks like she'd rather stick needles in her eyes than be at the races ...

Music is a big part of pre-race at most of the races...showing it brings viewers " to the track" what would you rather have.."talking heads" ?

  13. Hey Sophia, why did Tony and Tara break up. It seems that he always has these on again off again relationships.

  14. Whoa!!

The camera's eye does not like Larry Mac's shirt ...

Dig that fancy lightshow on his collar ... LOL

  15. for those not in the know you can google the Tony and Tara stuff..but indeed...Tony has been rude and cranky all week..and the alleged fight in the hauler???

    Odd.

i am confused about the COT, folks? I thought the COT was so they had less cars per team and did not need short track car or Superspeedway cars.

now, they are talking about tweaking all the wrecked cars for the "superspeedway"...did I miss something about the COT? They have been speaking about this all day...

    I am confused.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No Chad, it' just a 2 hr time frame on tv for this race and i am surprised at all the pre race stuff..that was all.

I am well aware that music is part of the HOLLYWOODIZATION.

    if that's a word, lol

    ReplyDelete
  17. They change the front geometry, gears, that sort of stuff. The chassis stays the same.

    ReplyDelete
  18. SophiaZ123, they do have less cars. some have brought their martinsville cars to Daytona. but the cars still have to be slightly tweaked for each track. if they did not, what would be need the garage for?

  19. Skeet

Please google the story as I mentioned...Tony has not mentioned her in a kind manner over the past few months..it's complicated and I want to stay on topic per JD's blog rules.

Still, this explains his moodieness and you are correct he has on/off relationships.... but I think he is starting off the season in horrible mood.

I hope he gets it together.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Its so nice to hear the voices and see the faces of FOX. They are keeping it exciting and doing a great job already.

  24. It's JR, they actually cheer louder when he is in the lead but I'm sure the volume knob in the truck got turned too

because the crowd makes for good sound when jr leads?

SophiaZ123, I saw the glitches on the HD feed. it could have been something as simple as wind moving the satellite dish at daytona.

  26. 1st miss of a wreck...showing replay...right to commercial

    ReplyDelete
  27. Can someone explain to me the logic of going to commercial right after a wreck?

    ReplyDelete

What's the deal with cueing the crowd nes only for JR????

Yeah, both ESPN and FOX do that. Cause you know everyone in the crowd is a Jr. fan and so when he takes the lead it's explosive. That annoys me so much.

  29. A commercial was needed, producers get angry if they don't get commercials in on time. I guarantee they will show a replay when we get back.

    ReplyDelete
  30. TOOOOOO Many commercials

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great coverage so far. I like the new ticker, I can read this one (no HD here yet). Good explainations of what is going on. OBTH Trackpass still has the "Chase" stuff on and it is all screwed up, not even by last years points and Race Trax doesn't have the new numbers (JR is blank) and if you click on a driver who changed his number it's still the old number.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks for the glitch explanation on HD feed...even though I have old fashioned tv.

But I gotta say, I LOVE NIGHT RACING! The cars look beautiful to me.

But I can't get used to Jr's changes on the car...will take a bit.

I like the black added to the 20 Home Depot car, too.

But I can't get used to Kasey in the Bud car but that red looks good on camera as always.

and say what you will about SPEED and Fox and too much sillieness, I LOVE HEARING guys in the booth that are enjoyiing themselves AND each other.

    What a difference. :)

  36. I still hate the new hollywood hotel. I liked the old one better where there was an actual window behind the crew and the studio was raised.

Thats one thing ESPN is better with is the design of the infield studio.

If a glitch comes from the source, daytona in this case, you will see it on the regular feed AND the HD feed.

  38. I can read this ticker easier than the one for ARCA..i watched that on another TV but could not make out the fonts, numbers or anything.

This one on FOX is easy to see in oncle glance. at least the names.

Course this tv is bigger than the one I watched earlier. :)

Man, I hope they can get Elliotts car off the track?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Changing the camera angle on the Hollywood hotel "windows" was a little disconcerting, hopefully they won't keep doing that. It appears there is no camera shot of the 21 hitting the wall, not a tread I hope

    ReplyDelete
  40. Still no replay of the wreck!!!!
    What is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is surprising that this situation with Bill Elliots car has not happend before.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Fox most likely explained the SAFER wall because there are new people watching the race ... because of all the PR from last night ...

Sophia - The squirrelly tv issues most likely caused by solar flares/storms ... esp since I've noticed it on other channels/networks in the past few days ... Expect it for up to a week ...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Still no replay of the wreck!!!!
    What is going on.

It appears they didn't have a camera angle showing the wreck since Bill was running way behind the pack all by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like to see a camera shot or explainatin of how they are actually going to move the car. Now would be ok for that 3d thing they used last year but just for this bizzare ocurrance

They do not have a replay. the car was alone and no cameras were following the car. they did show one camera angle that showed the car right before the crash and you could hear the crash on that angle.

  46. yes, it's disappointing all this problem with the new COT..sheesh...

and the bad camera work like last night...not starting off so swift.

I know there is nothing going on at the track TONIGHT but honestly, NASCAR really needs to think about side by side commercials..i am ready to go out to the kitchen and fix a late dinner at this rate.

Course, I have a TV out there, LOL.

  47. Cool craftsman commercial. Big thunderstorm here, pray the power doesn't go out, I'll be angrier than Stewert and Busch

    ReplyDelete
  48. Harvick is doing a great job! Wish he would stay the whole race!

    ReplyDelete
  49. The way I look at it is perhaps they are trying to get as many commercials in during this first 20 laps segment and 10 minute break so they can show limited commercials in the last 50 lap segment.

We will have to wait and see.

I don't see what you mean...
The crash was missed because he was all alone and crashed in a spot that even the fixed cameras could not see. the only solution would be to add more cameras, but I believe they already have 70+ cameras there.

  56. The guys in the booth direct the camera as they see something to watch, I don't remember that happening with ESPN. Boy my multi-tasking skills are rusty (kind of like Mikey and his pit stop), I can't keep track of in-car and TV at the same time.

It is the same sponsor as the ones actually on the cars.

Whoever had the thunder storm, hope you are still with us! that is nerve wracking.

I know. those are the primary sponsors, but if you saw the cars closely, Claritin is somewhere on the 99 and Direct tv somewhere on the 07. they are smaller than the primary sponsors of course. look closely at the car itself the next time they show the in car camera.

Get used to it. Same tight camera shots, missed wrecks, showing replays during green flag action, not breaking back from commercial for wrecks ... a network that shall not be named gets flammed for that type of stuff, others get a free pass.

No. It is the SPONSORS not NASCAR. NASCAR has no problem with it. it is the sponsors, who after years of FULL SCREEN adds, do not want to go side-by-side.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Fox needs to get rid of Chris Myers, DW, and show more than one car cross the finish line. I believe there were still 18 0r 20 cars racing at the end but we got to see Junior cross the line and then followed him and showed his pits.

  84. Did Fox just show JR crossing the line and no one else. I'm on call for work and guess when they called. That's right at the end of the race.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I've always read and heard it is NASCAR against the side by side as well.

As far as showing all the cars finish the race? I was too busy screaming "YES" and sent a quick email to my brother *huge Jr fan* and did not see all the cars cross the line.

JD's article said it showed them..I am embarrassed I missed that since I kvetched about the ARCA race...but I also need to look up where everybody finished.

I root for MANY drivers (have shirts of B labonte, Stewart, Scrader and Jr) but was just to thrilled to see Jrs drought end.
