Post-Race Comments: ESPNEWS, SportsCenter, Victory Lane, SPEED Report, Wind Tunnel

Due to popular demand, we are going to create this post so fans can continue to talk about the TV coverage after the Sprint Cup race from Bristol, TN on Fox Sports.

ESPNEWS does live press conference coverage from the Infield Media Center. The SPEED Report comes along on SPEED at 7PM, and then is followed by Victory Lane and Wind Tunnel.

These shows offer a wide variety of ways that fans can get additional information and interviews after the actual race is over.

This page will serve to host your comments about the post-race TV programs and coverage of the Bristol day race. To add your comments, please click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the directions.

Thanks again for dropping by, if this post is popular we will begin to offer a post-race comment area after every Sprint Cup race.

  1. Do we know when ESPNNews will start or is it just a crap shoot

  2. ESPNEWS cannot go on the air with anything live from Bristol, TN until the Fox Broadcast is over.

ESPNEWS just teased the fact that they will be live at 6PM and that Rusty Wallace was already in the ESPNEWS studio and waiting to go on the air.

    This should be interesting.

  4. Thanks JD... good info.

Makes sense since FOX is still on air.

  5. I'm glad they saved Dale Jarrett's interview until the end. Give a great champion the last word.

    Enjoyable telecast today.

    ReplyDelete
  6. they also teased that they would hear from Tony Stewart...while watching the Stewart channel it looked as if Stewart told Massaro he didn't want to talk...maybe he was just saying wait a little while. We shall see.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He probably just wanted to hash it out with Harvick before going on TV saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, now we know where Ryan Burr has been.

    ReplyDelete
  9. so far so good...they didn't have any "experts" in studio last week. just two anchors...big improvement already

    ReplyDelete
  10. it is kind of funny because shortly after turning down Massaro, Tony did an interview with Steve Byrnes that was tape delayed for the Fox broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Guess Rusty didn't pay close attention to the 48 he had a tire go down, lost 2 laps and finished 18th instead of the top 10.

    ReplyDelete
  12. oops spoke to soon Rusty did notice, my bad

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love him or hate him, Rusty is a very different person from last season. This is the kind of thing ESPN really needed from him.

ESPNEWS has created a destination for post-race NASCAR coverage.

  14. JD, are you going to do a column about how bad the Fox coverage of Bristol was today? Since this is for the post-race comments, I don't want to post my opinion here unless you aren't going to do a separate column?

Can someone please tell me why a reporter would ask such an obviously stupid question of Tony Stewart? How do you feel? Zazoo pits!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love this ESPNEWS coverage. Its the first time I have been able to watch it. I really gotta compliment all of ESPN for stepping up this year for NASCAR coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks for providing the info on what happened to the 48 -- that's one of the things that Fox didn't cover either.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Major kudos to ESPNEWS for this fantastic post-race analysis and post-race news conference coverage, especially being right up against the breaking news of the NCAA brackets being revealed. Thank you very much ESPN!

    ReplyDelete
  18. JD I agree...ESPN News is now the place to be after the race...it will be interesting to see if SPEED decides to make Victory Lane Live to compete with this new coverage. I know that they have given their reasons as to why they don't now, but with ESPN actually giving them competition maybe they will change their mind.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't want VL to be live and compete I want to watch both and not have to rely on DVR

    ReplyDelete
  20. To defend Byrnes, he can't hear what another interview has said. He has to depend on the pit spotter and pit producers to tell him something like what Harvick said. Plus he could have been on tape and the Harvick interview hadn't been done.

not to go off on a tangent but between show selection and the RUINIZATION of Monday nights race review with the horrid TWIN show,

I no longer think SPEED cares what is best for the fan or NASCAR.

Who would have thought I would be defending ESPN so much after my blistering comments last year?

Well SPEED has been a pain to watch all day yesterday with "audio glitches, picture freezes"
I hope we can get thru SPEED Rpt, VL and WT without MORE issues.
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. did they break up the coverage last week?

    ReplyDelete
  23. They are going back to NASCAR. Please keep in mind the Rockets just won their 22nd game in a row, the brackets have just been released and Tiger just won his fifth straight. A lot of stuff going on today, just not NASCAR.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Never mind, I found the blog for the TV coverage and posted my thoughts over there.

  25. newracefan,

ESPNEWS last week got caught in a commercial and then a basketball highlight package when the next live driver came on the raw feed, which is what they use.

There is no time coordination, so they recorded it on a hard drive and ran it TiVo style the first opportunity they could.

If NASCAR Media Group can simply get in sync with ESPNEWS, they can have the third, second and first place drivers on live national TV right after the race. How sweet would that be for the rest of the year?

    JD

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hopefully we get to see Harvick and Bower

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for letting us know they're doing this! While not as "in depth" I remember back in 2K2 after several races especially if they were up against the TV window, FOX would have us go over to SPEED and they'd show us the media center interviews and the do a final "wrap up". So that was always nice :). They'd wrap up the network coverage and tell us to head over in a few minutes and they'd interrupt whatever was on SPEED at the time and have an "extended" post-race. I've always wished they'd find a way to continue this.

But it's nice that ESPNN has started doing this, I hope they continue to do this! I'll have to send them an email :)

And that it would sir! That it would :D

  29. I know Tiger is next but are Ryan and Rusty coming back? I am enjoying this and would welcome more

    ReplyDelete
  30. If they can not coordinate with ESPN news how about playing on Monday after replay of VL and before TWIN

    ReplyDelete

    March 16, 2008 6:05 PM

Byrnes should have waited too, because that wasn't much of an interview. Tony was still too steamed to talk. Byrnes seemed nervous to even talk to him, but I must give him credit for properly gauging tony's mood and letting him go after two questions.

What I really want to see is a post race interview with Jamie McMurray. When has a Roush driver ever fallen out of the points? I just read the live thread and people there are right, McMurray really did seem to invite it, (karma wise), with his snippy attitude towards being asked about the top 35 on NASCAR Now this week. Normally I would feel a little sorry for him, but not after that.

  33. Ryan Burr even brought up the ramifications of the top 35 rule on ESPNEWS and asked Rusty to explain what that meant. This is certainly much more in-depth coverage than I ever expected on a network that is more catered to the "average sports fan". Great job guys, I LOVE being able to turn on ESPNEWS when Fox signs off to hear more about the race I just watched.

It's always a let-down to me when there's 2 or 3 hours of pre-race coverage every week on a wide variety of networks, yet when the checkered flag falls we often get a rushed close to the broadcast with a quick interview or two and then get left without any NASCAR on any TV network for the next several hours.

Thanks ESPN, I continue to be amazed on how ESPN has redeemed themselves after last year's total debacle.

  34. anon 6:52 your first statement is true but your second is not. John supervises this blog very well and he can't help it if some of the posters on here consider themselves self appointed, look for only the bad, professional critics. There will never be the perfect race broadcast and granted some are better than others. What I look for is multiple posters having the same grievence, than I think there is cause for concern.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rusty is nothing if not a competitor. It would not surprise me that the criticism last year prompted him to really bear down this year and maybe even practice. His improvement has really been most impressive this year.

    ReplyDelete
  36. ESPNnews coverage was excellent, would have loved to hear from Harvick and Boyer but evidently this is a busy sports news day so I'm ok. Batchief I agree, some of us are more critical than others (heck we don't even agree with each other sometimes). I am watching Speed Report now and excellent coverage as usual. I know some do not like Bob D. but I think he does an excellent job, but still no interview with Boyer, he was part of the top 3 what's that about

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dilner making specific comments how odd it is for Jamie Mac being OUT of top 35!!

    Jamie, meet Karma! :-o

ok..I'll stop but I hope NASCAR NOW brings this up!

I am another amazed at how I went from a critic of Rusty's in the booth last year to ENJOYING him on ESPN this year.

Sometimes it's all about finding the right fit. I am glad he found it and seems to play well with others now with the other talking heads.:)

I SAW an interview with Bowyer I think on Fox...THAT is where I was reminded (as well as bloggers there) that Harvick will be waxing Stewart tomorrow after Harvick ran tony into the wall!! so he got some time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I saw Clint on Fox too but should also be on Speed Report but it looks like they are going back to more from Bristol so there is still hope. Clint just cracks me up I may have to add him to the drivers I root for.

    ReplyDelete
  39. As Sophia said, they did interview Bowyer on Fox. As she said he talked about the waxing of Tony tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks Speed Report. Speaking of waxing Smoke I would love to hear the audio of that, not to mention Harvick covering for Smoke on the radio, esp after today. That should be interesting

    ReplyDelete
  41. They divide driver interviews between SPEED report and Victory Lane. I'd think it's more likely that Clint is on VL.

Where is Kahne? I think he was the only top 8 driver not interviewed on FOX.

  42. JD, ESPNEWS CANNOT be a destination for post-race. Not everyone has it. I need to upgrade to an expensive package to get it.

  43. okay, just a tiny pick on the British guy. He said MTJ spun in the Cup Lite race w/NO help!! umm..it was discussed a number of times that the 6 hit him. Just have to pt this out..besides that, so go, so far.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ~blush~ ummm..so far, so good! really need an edit here, JD!!

  45. Constructive criticism:
I'm sorry, but these Daly Planet blog posts today (this one and the Raceday thread) are turning into chat rooms. People, no one reading your posts after the fact -like tonight or tomorrow when TV personnel who might be interested in checking out the comments - can even figure out what many of you are trying to say if you post a vague sentence or two every five - ten minutes instead of posting a complete thought of what you are seeing on TV.

It can be a sentence or two, but please, make it make sense to someone other than yourself. Not just whatever comes into your head at the moment that someone not watching can't understand.

    Thanks.

  47. I have SPEED on basic cable. I need an expensive package to see ESPNEWS.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think more have Speed than ESPNnews but have no clue of percentages. I will admit that if I didn't have Speed I prob would not be the Nascar fan I am and would get more done around the house too ;)
PS anon 751 what happens is that so many of us post at the same time what would have been the next post turns out to be 5 posts down and somewhat confusing, not to mention veri errors delaying the post

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow big news at the end is Bob implying that if 40, 21 and 01 don't get back into the top 35 they will go away totally or just lose sponsers. To be honest I was expecting some of this (teams closing down) but not till 2009

That is why you should quote what you are referring or responding to. Even if you made it "bold" instead of quotes, that would work too.

  51. When I lived in another state, I had SPEED as part of my expanded basic cable with Comcast. When I moved to WV, all of a sudden it's in a "sports package" that's $8 a month only if you have digital cable. I figure ESPN News is up in that group as well. Wouldn't know, since I have no plans on giving the cable company any more money -- have to give it to the oil companies to keep from freezing and get to work.

    ReplyDelete
  52. well if the 40 loses ( I think that is Dario) I wish he'd go back to OW. I will miss him in that series!!!
Hate to see the 21 team lose sponsors but they have struggled for years.

Least they can NOT blame this on Schrader.

Well, now we know where Ryan Burr has been.

    March 16, 2008 6:02 PM

Ryan Burr had studio college b-ball duties late this week. I'd guess he'd have those through first part of April?

Count me in on the Jamie McMurray "karma". What's even more ironic is that Marty Smith asked Hornish Friday about swapping points with Busch again if he didn't make top 35. Hornish said no he wasn't going to do that again, he'd go out and qualify and do his best to make the races.

And there stands Hornish in top 35 while the unconcerned Jamie is out.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Karma is a wonderful thing and sometime fun to watch. Between his recent attitude and Larry Carter (crew chief) leaving MWR in lurch last season. Hopefully they'll wake up and get back t being the people they use to be. Jamie can be a great guy so I a not sure what is going on.

Now back to TV Victory Lane, great show happening here

  55. I didn't catch the post race on ESPN News. Call me stupid, ignorant or lazy, but if my Directv guide doesnt tell me that the show is about Nascar, I dont bother changing to it.

I dont watch enough of ESPN to know and/or care what their shows are about. Multiple years of the same World poker tour shows, billiards and spelling bees have taught me never to investigate what a show is about on ESPN.

If this is going to be regular feature after every race on ESPNNews, I wish they would have it listed in the guide so I would know.

    BillWebz

    ReplyDelete
  56. ESPNEWS does not have NASCAR features Shows. They put the NASCAR news and information in their news program which airs just about 24/7, called ESPNEWS. They do this with just about every sport.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Bill little tough to list in the guide when you don't know the exact time the race is going to end

    ReplyDelete
  58. The preview of Nascar Confidential looks like something I want to watch. I always loved those behind the scenes shows

    ReplyDelete
  59. Bill little tough to list in the guide when you don't know the exact time the race is going to end

Actually they do know when it is going to end, weather permitting, weeks ahead of time, to within a 1/2 hour or so. They can easily list in the guide "Nascar post race news conference" instead of just Generic Sports news. If the conference doesnt happen run a ticker at the bottom telling those who switch to it why. They do it with other sports, football, basketball, baseball etc, list the post game wrapup show in the guide, even if there is a chance that a game goes overtime.

    BillWebz

On a slightly different topic, JD you have any information why they are not producing the shows on nascar.com anymore, the prerace, postrace etc?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bill,

As you can see from my lack of NASCAR.com info this season, I am not very happy with the Turner Interactive folks.

No one responded to my request for regular NASCAR information updates and my question about their iTV personalities.

So, no NASCAR.com iTV reviews or columns this season. Kind of a shame.

    JD

    ReplyDelete
  61. Like many other fans, I was also glad to see D.J. get the coverage he received this weekend. It would be nice if they treated all retiring drivers in the same manner.

    ReplyDelete
  62. JD, ESPNEWS CANNOT be a destination for post-race. Not everyone has it. I need to upgrade to an expensive package to get it.

    Same with SPEED Channel.

There is nothing wrong with specialty channels being on a different tier than others. If you want the content enough, you pay for it. Simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I guess I feel sorry for those of you with cable who can't get Speed or "news" without going up a tier...you should really check out Dish or DirecTV...

    ReplyDelete
  64. True. I get all these on DISH with no problem.
