Horse Racing Instead of "NASCAR Now"
This will be a post to discuss the live draw for post positions in the Kentucky Derby that was supposed to end at 6PM.
NASCAR Now was scheduled in that timeslot and the live Derby draw is still on the air at 6:20PM.
Your comments are welcome below as we all watch this on-air issue continue. I have not seen an explanation on the lower third information panel. ESPN is in SportsCenter, and ESPN Classic is in soccer.
Update #1: ESPN2 just ran a promo for SportsCenter at 6:20PM that talked about the show that began at 6PM, so it looks like the Derby show is being "time-shifted." They also used a lower third graphic to say NASCAR Now was coming up next.
Update #2: For those of you just coming home to review the VCR or the DVR for NASCAR Now, you actually have the draw for the Kentucky Derby. NASCAR Now was pushed back to 6:30PM, which loses a lot of viewers who normally record the show.

JD: ESPN2 ran a "Next: NASCAR Now" in the bottom ticker a few minutes before 6 p.m. but most people probably missed it if they tuned in at 6. They then panned to a UPS stock car at the Derby draw site and Dale Jarrett was sitting on the set with the other men (whoever they are) and they asked Dale a couple of questions before going back to the draw. UPS must be the sponsor.
ReplyDeleteThe 7 PM bowling event is live, so the NBA special at 6:30 may not be shown.
That certainly is a strange approach to this issue. Did the soccer run long?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the reason that NASCAR Now was thirty minutes late?
JD
I don't know if the soccer ran long - but it was live and that's probably what happened. Kentucky Derby draw was also supposed to be live, so those events likely took priority over NASCAR Now and the NBA show. Inconvenient but understandable - on ESPN live programming always takes priority over taped programming. They've been showing live soccer on Wednesday afternoon the past couple of weeks. I thought NASCAR Now was going to run late last week, but the game ended just in time.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing because of the 7 PM live bowling event, they decided to cancel the NBA special and move NASCAR Now to 6:30 because otherwise one of those shows would have to be joined in progress.
They were taking their time with the Derby draw, there was no rushing to get off the air, so they probably made a pretty early decision to skip the NBA show and move NASCAR Now.
Well I'll watch what I recorded to see DJ. I happened to just get home and there was a shot of Reut's car and then I got confused. I am catching NN live but if I had gotten home when I expected I would have totally missed it. Is the draw for the Kentucky Derby a big deal? I don't follow horse racing, I realize the race is so I guess the draw is like qualifying but I had no idea.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the replay will be on at the correct time for those who weren't home to catch it or adjust the recording time.
ReplyDeleteI've always found it best to do a manual record if I watch NN, adding 30 minutes on the record time. I add even more time if I read something here and decide to record the replay. I've found out the hard way that sometimes the replay runs up to an hour to 90 minutes late and sometimes they don't show it at all.
ReplyDeleteYes, the post position draw for the Kentucky Derby is equal to the 125 Duels for the Daytona 500. The Derby is the first of the triple crown races and it is a very big deal here in KY. Glad to see UPS sponsoring and giving DJ a TV spot at the draw. The horse to beat is The Brown, ironic uh?
ReplyDeleteThere is a new post up about the Wednesday NASCAR Now program. There were some interesting announcements, so take a look.

Yes, the Chelsea - Liverpool game had a 30 minute overtime.
ReplyDeleteFunny - George Gillett, main owner of GEM, co owns the Liverpool team and is now trying to sell his share. The Liverpool fans and British media *hate* him now. (Ugly American messing up their football teams!) The local police warned him and the other co-owner to stay away from the game last week for their own safety. Maybe he'll get some extra cash to put into GEM out of the sale. And maybe he'll show up at some races.
ReplyDeleteAlso funny is his Liverpool partner, who Gillett is fighting with and no longer gets along with, may buy into RCR. The British fans and media hate him, too. (Ugly American #2 Tom Hicks) Hope they don't bring their grudge match to NASCAR if Hicks buys in.
Anon 6:27,
ReplyDeleteThe favorite in the Derby, Big Brown, is sponsored by UPS. Dale Jarrett was up there with David Reutimann and Michael Waltrip for an appearance.
I was out, but I can still record the late replay. Since the soccer ran long, that and the horse race draw take priority (no matter how indifferent I am to horse racing). Plus, at least I get bonus coverage with DJ there at the draw. No harm, no foul.
ReplyDeletesonic,
ReplyDeleteTell that to the vast majority of viewers of NASCAR Now who record the show on a VCR or DVR.
This is the problem and it is one that is going to have to be solved by ESPN pretty soon. There are lots of programs on the network that get affected by this situation.
Eventually, we all know the solution is to make this entire show available online for replay even in a limited window.

I was a faithful watcher of RPM2nite, and I do not recall it being rescheduled because of live events running long. Nascar Now was not worth my time last year, and I did not watch it. This year's NN is much improved, and I will watch it regularly. However, I do not record programs and will not chase it all over the ESPN channels and all over the clock to find it. If ESPN cannot find a reliable way to present it on a scheduled time and channel, they will lose me as a viewer.

If I hadn't been reading this blog at 11:59 p.m., I would have missed NN totally. Watching now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update.
John, there's still the midnight replay. Which, indeed, I'm watching nearly-live (a rarity for me, with how much use my DVR gets). I would think that anyone who's a big enough NASCAR fan to actually record NASCAR Now would at least know that there's a late replay, so that if something like this happens they can stay up for it or record it instead. This has happened before, and it'll happen again, and not just with NASCAR. I don't see how it's that big of a deal. It's just the nature of sports. They're unpredictable, and the schedules aren't always going to work out.
