In-Progress At Talladega: Sprint Cup Qualifying On SPEED
Mike Joy will host one of the most unique qualifying sessions that NASCAR fans will see this season.
Talladega is an impound race for the Cup Series, so the teams that are locked into the Top 35 will be qualifying in race trim.
This leaves those outside of the Top 35 to put all their effort into getting in complete qualifying trim. The results are two very different groups of cars on the racetrack. Viewers may well see many of the top speeds set by the "go-or-go home" bunch. One of them may well be on the pole.
Larry McReynolds and Darrell Waltrip will be joining Joy in the booth. Jeff Hammond should also be along, perhaps in the area of the Hollywood Hotel. On pit road will be Hermie Sadler. The other NASCAR on Fox pit reporters are Krista Voda, Steve Byrnes, Dick Berggren and Matt Yocum.
This program will begin at 11AM and is scheduled to continue until 2PM Eastern Time.

Weather could definitely be an issue today, especially with the tight schedule. There's a band of showers cutting across Alabama, that'll most likely hit during the middle portions of the the qualifying order.
ReplyDeleteJD: FOX has changed their pre-show for Sunday. It now begins at 1 PM ET instead of the previously scheduled 1:30 ET. Green flag is scheduled for 2:21 ET. Looks like FOX is doing one of those extralong preshows like the almost 90 minute one from Las Vegas.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm seeing conflicting info about what that change does to RaceDay on SPEED, which was originally scheduled for 11:30 -1:30 ET. The RaceDay time has now changed on some online TV schedules (like Zap2it) to air from 11-1 ET, instead of 11:30 to 1:30. However on my cable schedule and SPEED.com it still says Raceday from 11:30-1:30.
Any idea from your SPEED contacts if the RaceDay time is really changing to 11-1? And if so, is RaceDay contractually forbidden to run at the same time as the FOX broadcast? I think RaceDay made a habit of overlapping the preshows on ABC and TNT by half an hour last year, but not FOX. Thanks.
One other note: Tradin' Paint is only airing one time this weekend, at 11 PM ET tonight. No repeat tomorrow. I think they should air this show at least twice a weekend but they often don't. NASCAR Performance gets two airings, at 10:30 PM and 10:30 AM Sunday.
Anon 11:48AM,
ReplyDeleteI will be putting this information together in a new post shortly and explaining the TV schedules for Sunday.

If you are not going to bother showing an event live, don't show it at all. This taped delayed qualifying is horrible. It screws up the viewer's ability to complement the broadcast with information from other sources, such as NASCAR.com. Whatever moron who decided to show qualifying like this must not know about the internet.
ReplyDeleteShow everything live, or if TV insists on making room for commercial breaks, NASCAR needs to delay the action on the track.
Tape delaying sporting events in this day and age is inexcusible. Pathetic.
If tape delay means we see more cars then that's ok by me. We all realize that commercials need to be put in somewhere so Tivo it is
ReplyDeleteI know this is off topic, JD, but regarding the absence of NASCAR Now yesterday, I believe it was planned that way all along. At the end of Thursday's show, Nicole Manske mentioned that the next episode would be on Sunday morning with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree.
ReplyDeleteJust thought I would point out that it appears this was planned. Strange that the ESPN2 tv schedules weren't updated.

ReplyDeleteThe no Nascar Now on friday had to be decided several days before for Comcast to have it, their TV schedule (which is not always the most up to date) did not have it listed.
ReplyDeleteThe ESPN guys told me it had been cancelled some time ago, which makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI used the wrong source for my listings, which I have since changed.
Thanks,
JD
Great qualifying coverage today. The TiVo style works well with all the TV elements. I don't care if you can't use other online elements, with this format we miss very few drivers AND THAT IS BETTER.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 12:18 PM I AM TALKING TO YOU!!!
If it was live we would miss many more drivers due to commercials and many more people would complain. You want to know who decided to cover qualifying like this? It was the fans.
Speed is only about 2 cars behind. Great lap for AJ Allmendinger. 2nd fastest.
ReplyDeleteFor cryin out loud, SPEED!!!!
ReplyDeleteSchrader makes a bonzai run and you guys don't interview him???? He's one of YOUR GUYS, you nimrods!!!!!!!
You have time for "blah, blah, blah" in the 'hotel' but don't have the smarts, or fan courtesy, or loyalty to Schrader to interview him???
All so you can get to a taped moto cross event????
Here's alittle inside info to your on-air program decision guy......pssstt, you can actually delay the start of a videotaped show and not miss anything....
