In-Progress At Charlotte: Nationwide Qualifying And Cup Happy Hour

Immediately after the live NCTS race from Mansfield is over, SPEED goes right back to the Lowe's Motor Speedway. The network will present Nationwide Series qualifying and Sprint Cup final practice.

It will be Mike Joy leading the team for the Nationwide Series qualifying at 3:30PM Eastern Time. Joy will be joined by Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds in the announce booth. Down on pit road will be NASCAR on Fox reporters Dick Berggren and Matt Yocum.

When this session is over, it will be John Roberts filling the time before "happy hour" with a flexible edition of NASCAR Live. Roberts will have TV veteran Randy Pemberton and SPEED announcer Bob Dillner joining him as reporters from the garage area. This program is scheduled to begin at 5:30PM.

The Sprint Cup cars take to the track for the final hour of practice at 6PM. Joy will stay to call the action and bring out most of the NASCAR on Fox crew. Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds will be in the booth and Krista Voda and Matt Yocum will be reporting.

Over at the new Fox infield set, Steve Byrnes and Jeff Hammond will be adding commentary and using the tools like the cut-a-way car to elaborate on race issues. This new "pit box" area has certainly been...interesting.

This post will serve to host your comments about the afternoon of qualifying and practice on SPEED. There will be a new post up at 6PM for the Nationwide Series race on ESPN2. "Knock-out qualifying"

Why do the TV guys insist on repeating these made-up terms that have never caught on with the fans (and never will)?

  2. Holy crap! Must be something in the water there at the track. The announcers are certainly off-calling folks by the wrong names, not knowing qualifying order...geez, be a professional.

  3. nice to see john force at the track!
    two quick notes:
    1. when they were interviewing vickers about the n'wide pole, the beginning camera angle was a bit odd: above and behind vickers so all you could see was his back and the face of the interviewer. got it corrected half way thru the response but definitely curious.
    2. when talking w/cnc haas about the confiscation, the signal crapped out just as he started to explain what, exactly, he was told was wrong with the cars, especially since the passed inspection for qualifying and had been impounded since then. i'm guessing i'll get it all in an article tonight and it was clearly no one's fault. just unfortunate.

oh: and poor dilner! making my throat hurt tonight!

    on to cup practice!

  4. Kind of a rocky start for the crew there.

And "long day's journey into night" really doesn't need to be said for the umptenth time.

  5. Bob Jenkins is actually hosting the Indy 500 parade over on ESPN2.

Talk about flashbacks. He looks great, by the way.

  6. ok, very nice explanation of the cnc haas confiscation and can i just say: i KNOW it's cheating but damn! that was some brilliant maneuvering. mess with the brace beneath the deck lid so that the wing stands up just a little bit more. still fits the egg crate templates, even if just barely. wow. i am (sheepishly) impressed. wonder who dropped the dime on cnc haas . . .?

  7. hey jd? even tho' it's not coverage related, i have a question from another board that maybe you can get answered for us? lowe's was supposed to have SAFER barriers installed along the inside walls in time for this weekend's racing. chapman's hit in n'wide qualifying didn't look like it hit a SAFER wall. can anyone confirm that the inside walls have, in fact, been replaced as promised?

  8. red-

Maybe someone from Joe Gibbs Racing? Kind of a shot across the bow about Stewart :)

  9. red,

Good question. I am going to drop Mike Joy an email and see how he wants to follow-up.

  10. Red I was thinking the same thing thanks for thinking of asking JD. With what heppened with the 66 I'm guessing NP will need a substitute for Bootie for at least 6 weeks. Bummer for that show, it was never quite the same when Chad or Bootie were missing.

On another note I've heard several promos for TWIN but not one that includes the panel members. What's the deal JD do you know? Let's face it they are all in Charlotte this week.

  11. hey nrf! in this post "tony eury jr-is-suspended-but-he's-watching-the-race-from-the-infield-in-his-motocoach" era, is nascar now officially forbidding suspended crew chiefs from entering the track complex? do they actually pull the hard card for the suspension period?
if so, i will really miss bootie a ton! he and chad are terrific on NP!
and i can't take credit for the question myself (altho' seeing him hit that inside wall did make me go "hmmm. thought that was supposed to be replaced?") as i say, a post on another site asked the question. i just thought i'd see if we could get an answer.

  12. Red I don't think they Pull the card but they will prevent you from going anywhere that you need one, they can't stop them from going anywhere that is "public". I am pretty sure Chad might have been in the area for a race or two but he was keeping a really low profile and was not on NP, that's when he welded that coilbound spring.

  15. Hey,

Bootie should be on NASCAR Performance tonight at 10:30PM on SPEED. That should be interesting.

    nrf,

I did not get the Monday TWN line-ups yet, but wait till you hear who is on NASCAR Now...that should be interesting.

  17. About the NP tonight, how interesting depends on when it was taped. Before or after the cars were taken

Now they've gone and done it, I guess with the new spot he does on NN it was only a matter of time. Too bad last week was so good too.

  21. NASCAR Performance for this week was taped last week! I got to watch two tapings of Performance when I was in town for the all-Star race. I asked someone about it and they said because of Speed Street that they were taping the show a week early.
