In-Progress At Richmond: Sprint Cup Series On Fox
Update: Here we go again! The Major League Baseball game on Fox is now overlapping the pre-race show. The green flag is at 7:45PM Eastern Time. The East Coast and West Coast (portions) are seeing the Mets vs. Diamondbacks game. Other areas in the Central time zone are seeing the NASCAR pre-race. This is called regional broadcasting and Fox is finishing the Mets game on the stations that started it.
The Sprint Cup Series is under the lights at the Richmond International Raceway for what should be an interesting night of TV coverage.
Chris Myers will start the evening off for Fox from the Hollywood Hotel with a forty-five minute pre-race show at 7PM Eastern Time. Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond will be alongside.
Mike Joy will anchor the race coverage, with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds in the booth. Down on pit road will be Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda.
The dynamics of this short "bull ring" are very different than Talladega, and proved to be trouble for the ESPN crew on Friday night. It was tough to keep-up with all the action on the track, and several replays of accidents were not available.
This is a "tension" race. The first couple runs are about feeling out the track, the car and the tire wear. Then, the jockeying for position begins and the end result is often hot tempers and bent cars. It should be interesting to watch the NASCAR on Fox crew make this transition after the Talladega race of team tactics and drafting.
Fox has calmed down on the "Digger" cam and instead emphasized the in-car cameras at Talladega throughout the event. It should be interesting to see what TV approach they take in Richmond, where laps of under 22 seconds should make it tough to use the "TV toys" available unless the race is under caution.
Update: I have been reminded that a live baseball game on Fox started at 3:30PM. With the pre-race show starting at 7PM, this allows the normal amount of time for the game. Should things go into extra innings or rain delay the game, Fox will once again find itself shifting baseball to FX or collapsing the NASCAR pre-race show.

three quick pre-race notes:
ReplyDeletedear fox, based on the appalling job last week at talladega, i will not be watching your pre-race show. i will wait to read the comments of my fellow posters here on the daly planet to make a week by week decision on your efforts. i am only one fan, i understand, but you need to work to regain me as a viewer of your pre-race.
also, b/c i may not be able to be online tonight during the race -- hey TV Guy! good luck tonight: short track, lots of action, beating and banging! hope you're kept very busy with replays!
and jd: thanks once again for everything you do to keep us part of an informed, intelligent, humorous site! i would seriously hate for you to do anything to change that! i come here daily for the lack of drama and the smart conversation. thanks!
Red please. this is about the coverage of todays race, if you chose not to watch it, dont post here. I enjoyed the race last week, but that is enough of last week. lets move on.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we have 3 regional baseball games on Fox this afternoon preceding race coverage. 1 is over, another has a 6-run difference and should be over by 6:45. The 3rd of the 3 games (Mets/Arizona) is a close 1-run game. If that game stays at that, it should also be over by 7:00p.m. Eastern.
ReplyDeleteHas FOX taken the 3rd game (Mets/Arizona) nationally, if the second game you mentioned ended already? I would hate to be in a region stuck with the (Mets/Arizona)game and have everyone else get live racing coverage.
ReplyDeleteIt appears they're going to keep Mets/Arizona regional. If the game stays 5-4 with Arizona leading, they won't miss 7p.m. by much.
ReplyDeleteSo that means my religion will miss a national "must carry" show? that is contractually unacceptable. It should either air a little bit later nationally or not at all until it can be national. I believe that is in the NASCAR TV contract.
ReplyDelete"So that means my religion will miss...."
ReplyDeletesorry, bad spell check mistake. I meant my "region" and not "religion".
Here in South Florida, with seven minutes to go until NASCAR, I have the Mets game in the 8th inning with no one out.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone in a different area of the country have their baseball game done already?
We are trying to find out if everyone is watching the same Mets game.
JD
Mets 4 Arizona 6....it does not look like it will go overtime, but in the bottom of the 8th with one out, it is getting way too close to 7:00.
ReplyDeleteJD, I believe FOX will finish all baseball coverage before going to NASCAR nationally. if the other 2 games end before the end of the (Mets/Arizona) game, I think FOX will switch stations to that game, then when it is all over, we will see NASCAR.
ReplyDeleteAgain I dont think it is possible to have the pre-race show shown regionally, if some of us are still watching the (Mets/Arizona), due to contractual obligations.
FOX out of Dallas was carrying the Cubs game --- it's over.
ReplyDeletethe FOX station in San Diego is showing the Mets/Diamondbacks game.
ReplyDeleteTexasRaceLady, what is FOX showing now in your area? did they switch to the mets/diamondbacks game?
ReplyDeleteChi St. Louis game listed as over in Ohio...commercials on now at 6.59 JD.
ReplyDeletePre race coming on now.
4:00 in San Diego, 7:00 eastern and FOX is still showing the mets/diamondbacks baseball game. Are others getting race coverage?
ReplyDelete"NASCAR will follow baseball on Fox."
ReplyDeleteThis is the word from Fox with only one out in the 8th inning.
JD
Fox outside Philly we have Mets BB here too
ReplyDeleteSophiaZ123, are you sure? pre-race programing is on now?
ReplyDeleteI DO NOT believe FOX would carry a national must Carry, regionally.
Anon your "religion" comment cracked me up...I figured you meant region but to some of us NASCAR is almost like a religion...with no disrespect to the real deal, of course. :)
ReplyDeleteTHRILLED game off here in time.
Please confirm for us if any part of the US is getting the pre-race show?
ReplyDeleteIf you could include your station and city location it would be great.
Thanks, JD
Anon 6:59
ReplyDeleteI have the FOX pre-race right now.
Does anyone have actually pre-race coverage?!?!
ReplyDeleteFOX out of NYC is still showing the mets arizona game, but fox out of LA is showing the pre-race now. This is why I pay for both the east and west coast broadcast channels on directv
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
anon
ReplyDeleteYes, both FOX affiliates from 2 cities have pre race.
Where are you that you are missing it? Bummer...but they are only talking to Ky B...sigh
JD, I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!
ReplyDeleteHow can FOX have the pre-race only regionally?? This is not right...
OK, so Texas is getting the pre-race show in the Central time zone.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you folks on the West Coast getting?
East Coast is still in the Mets game which is only in the 8th inning.
JD
WXIX based out of Cincinnati and WRGT based out of Dayton both have pre race show, JD
ReplyDeleteXETV in San Diego is still showing the mets/diamondbacks game.
ReplyDeleteFox in southern Michigan has the prerace show.
ReplyDeleteBill,
ReplyDeleteSo West feed of Fox is NASCAR and the East feed is baseball.
Is there a Central time zone feed?
JD
D-Backs 10 Mets 4 2 outs bottom of the 8th in Connecticut @ 7:05 PM
ReplyDeleteHere in Phoenix, at 5 minutes after, they are of course showing the Diamondbacks game. Thankfully they just scored a boatload of points (10-4 now), so at least overtime is highly unlikely. But still, with at least another half inning to go, it could be another half hour or so before it's over. One of the reasons I HATE baseball. It can be such a boring, slow moving affair.
ReplyDeleteJD, how could I be in san diego and not get Pre-race, but LA is getting it??
ReplyDeleteThat is why I was curious, we know the East Coast is for the Mets, but you would think with the Diamondbacks that the Pacific Fox stations would have the game as well.
ReplyDeleteKeep telling us where it is on please.
JD
JD, the west feed is NOT NASCAR, as I have said, either stations are separating the feeds and it is not by time zone, or san diego is the only one still getting the baseball game.
ReplyDeleteAnon...LA Fox station is showing the race?
ReplyDeleteChicago WFLD is pre-race show.
ReplyDeleteJD, San Diego is not showing the race, another poster on here was in NYC and said they can pick up the LA feed via DirecTV, they said LA is getting the race, but I dont know how well you can trust the west coast feed from direcTV
ReplyDelete4:09 PM in Phoenix, FOX affiliate KSAZ has the baseball game.
ReplyDeleteWho knows where our feed comes from here in Bermuda but I assume its Fox Rochester (New York?). However I'm sick sick sick of this garbage put all Nascar on Speed - end of story.
ReplyDeleteAlbuquerque is still on basball.
ReplyDeleteBill was just saying that was what was on the feed. The stations that started the Mets game are finishing it. This is going to be another close one.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wish Fox had put the pre-race show on FX or made it available on another cable TV source.
JD
Did we have this much troubles with BB last year. This is getting really old.
ReplyDeleteJD, have you read my previous posts? San Diego in California ON THE WEST coast, is not getting race coverage. I dont know for sure about LA.
ReplyDeleteMy DTV east coast feed is showing basball and the west coast feed (which should be LA) is showing pre-race.
ReplyDeleteOne thing to notice when the Mets game is over and the rest of the stations join the NASCAR program is how smooth the "join" is and what Myers and the Hollywood Hotel chooses to recap.
ReplyDeleteJD
I've never wished for a double play so hard in my entire life
ReplyDeleteI have the official coverage list, if anyone is still interested, thanks to HD Sports Guide:
ReplyDeleteThe whole list can be found here
"MARKETS INCLUDE: Albuquerque, Buffalo, Denver, Fort Myers, Hartford, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, West Palm Beach"
Anon 7:11,
ReplyDeleteYes, and thanks for the info.
JD
"MARKETS INCLUDE: Albuquerque, Buffalo, Denver, Fort Myers, Hartford, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, West Palm Beach"
ReplyDeleteso JD, it is not by time zone, but by markets....
I am still infuriated that they didnt put the pre-race else where for those that couldnt see it...
Game over!! lets see how the make the switch..
here we go
ReplyDeleteI'm sure local affiliates with the baseball game will still have local adjacent spots to run before race coverage.....so it'll be interesting what they'll do in regards to a re-join.
ReplyDeleteSan Diego is in a LOCAL comercoal break...why are they doing that when they have NASCAR programing to get to??
ReplyDeleteAt 15 after in Phoenix, they went straight to commercial, probably allowing the pre-race crew time to set for new viewers
ReplyDeleteMike you are right I've got commercials here. JD as far as smooth goes anything will be better than the last time
ReplyDeletestill in a local break....why is it so long??
ReplyDeleteOk local commercial done now I have commercials that are prob being seen everywhere. Come on already
ReplyDeleteNice job by the baseball announcers to keep promo'ing the NASCAR race.
ReplyDeleteThanks to all of you for keeping us informed of what was going on during this overlap. TV sure is interesting.
Well, the join here in South Florida was bad. Myers and company were just talking and never acknowledged my station joining.
Anyone else have a different thing happen to them?
JD
By the way, just to go back to the Phoenix race...
ReplyDeleteApparently since there was a small portion of the country (ONLY the Denver and Phoenix markets) not seeing the Red Sox game, do you know if people saw the pre-race go down normally for those markets, or what was the case?
Now they are just repeating commercials I just saw...whats going on? watching XETV San Diego
ReplyDeleteThey just cut right into mid-sentence at 18 after here in Phoenix after over 3 minutes of commercials.
ReplyDeleteSmooth join here in Phila area but straight back into commercials AGAIN at 720
ReplyDeleteThose with commercials had it done right. Those commercials were a certain length to provide a clean re-join. Those that didn't have local spots ended up with the awkward re-join.
ReplyDeleteHORRIBLE break in to NASCAR Coverage...it went strait from a local commercial to Chris M. mid sentence.... XETV San Diego
ReplyDeleteWNYW-TV New York just joined Fox Sports national at the race for a brief 30 seconds (enough for Myers to welcome viewers), this after several minutes of ads.
ReplyDeleteI assume the ads I am now seeing are from the national feed.
Well, that was certainly an experience to share. That was a tough switch, and when Myers finally welcomes Mets viewers the show went right away to break.
ReplyDeleteWhat other games were on other than the Mets vs. Diamondbacks?
JD
The reason you're seeing commercials again is because they held them off until the people with the Mets/Arizona game joined the broadcast. They didn't want those affiliates joining in the middle of a network break.
ReplyDeleteMike are you in broadcasting?
ReplyDeleteMets-Dbacks was the only game of the 3 Fox had that ran long. Both Cubs-Cards, and Angels-Orioles were over with well before 7p.m.
ReplyDeleteI am Ohio on East Coast time but of course due to region, had the St. louis-Chi game. Glad it was not rain delayed or anything.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry for those of you that got gypped.
JD I don't remember this being such a huge issue last year on Fox? Maybe you can get some feedback why this is such a problem...Time change of races?
Anon at 7:24,
ReplyDeleteI was involved in radio (have 15 years of experience). Was a programming/sports director for a station that's an MRN/PRN affiliate, and did other play by play events. So I have a little experience with formatics and so forth.
The main reason they had to go to break is because the recievers that Fox uses for the local stations had to be re-tuned to a different channel. You do not want to re-tune a receiver when it is on the air as it does not look good.
ReplyDeleteJD-
ReplyDeleteInteresting thing here. Local Fox (DFW) had the whole pre-race. However my national feed on DirecTV HotPass had the Arizona game at the same time.
Here in Charlotte, the pre-race started at 7:00pm so I am glad that I did not have to deal with baseball.
ReplyDeleteJD, I think what happened here today is a big problem.
ReplyDeleteIsnt it not allowed by the contract to have NASCAR programing only aired regionally?
The West coast feed on Directv out of LA had the orioles & angels game - must have gotten over in time cause they had the prerace on at 7pm.
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
bill h-
ReplyDeleteSo I guess the national feed on HotPass is regional too. Interesting.
bevo, I think that mean the baseball game was actually national, but FOX allowed some stations to air pre-race if their game was done.
ReplyDeleteBTW anybody know what happened to Fox Trax on the Fox site?
ReplyDeleteWOW! Impressive camera work of the Blue Angels. Thanks Fox.
ReplyDeleteimo all anthems for NASCAR should be mandated instrumentals. great rendition and I loved seeing so much of the jets. Sometimes it's just a quick glimpse.
:)
FOX trax is still there, but now you just have to click on race trax before you find the link to FOX trax which will be somewhere on that page.
ReplyDeleteThis is just the perils of having Saturday night races. Other stuff is going on right before it.
ReplyDeleteThe pre-race shows are becoming the built in overrun buffer for the earlier live event.
I really enjoy The Hit List. Who would have thought the JJ is a head banger and likes Metallica.
ReplyDeleteQuick note, BEST FLY BY EVER!
ReplyDelete(I might be a bit bias my son is a crewman on the #4!!! )
Kyle your not bias I was thinking the same thing. Great anthem too
ReplyDeleteIf anyone watched the derby today you would have thought Fox was in charge. No finish was seen except the winner. Then off to the drama and emotion.Horse races are never shown this way.Yet this one was.I now think all sports will be broadcast the Fox Nascar way.If not now soon. The twits that broadcast this stuff serve only one god.Emotion.
ReplyDeleteI have Dish Network, live in North GA, and the feed is horrible. Pure yellow screen most of the time with some audio and then a Fox screen comes up with an ID tag stating some techincal stuff. Are there any other Dish network subscribers having this problem? I have missed most of the pre race. HELP!!!

HotPass (794) is the actual race broadcast 790 - 793 are the drivers. Instead of tuning to the local Fox (4 in my case) I use 794 to dee the national feed. Bill h was seeing the pre-race on his 794 but mine still had the baseball game. My local Fox also had the pre-race.
Dang this is sounding convoluted :)

Don't think you b/c of what happened right after the finish that that's why they didn't show more of it? Seems Eight Belles' incident happened when she was pulling up.

That means one to go...what wrong with that? Even ESPN does that.
I haven't noticed postions switching live as the ticker goes across the screen before now. Is that new?
ReplyDeleteThey are taking a step forward, the positions are updating at the line.
ReplyDeleteI would HOPE the tragedy of the derby is why the camera just showed the winner.
ReplyDeleteTHAT would be an acceptable one and only FOX DIRECTOR CAMERA moment...or producer (can't keep straight!)
The Fly by tonight was the best ever.
Wow, Fox is actually using a live ticker tonight. Finally!
ReplyDeleteOMG Erik!! You are right!! that is new. it seems FOX has switched to a new scoring system that shows positions as they change, much closer to live than before. I am so proud of FOX.
ReplyDeleteThink someone is reading this live?
ReplyDelete:))
JD
Mike Joy just mentioned the changes to the ticker on the air.
ReplyDeleteMike Joy - Good people ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike!

ReplyDeleteWow, Fox is actually using a live ticker tonight. Finally!
Stricklinfan, where are you?
Mike Joy just mentioned the ticker change. FOX has switched to Real-time GPS scoring, the only problem is now it is unofficial and prone to mistakes. Hope this works outs. Which would you rather have?
ReplyDeleteCool sunset shot!!!
ReplyDeleteIF ONLY the same camera decisions come on the last lap. I am still shocked we got to see so much of the jets. Cool beans.
I will run to the kitchen and make brownies and share virtual brownies with all. :)
Mike Fox addressing the live scoring..the switching is kind of dizzying...I like ESPN just change the names better but it's nice to see Fox getting more updates.
Mike Fox is the best. I don't see how anybody can NOT like that guy. Red cars look good under the lights on my tv. WOW!
OOps@ Meant Mike Joy.
ReplyDeleteFox is a politician. CRIPES, forgive me.
Sophia writes 100 times
Mike Joy. Mike Joy. Mike Joy.
No problem with baseball here in ATL, but we are having a great deal of signal trouble on the HD feed.
ReplyDeleteThat was cool --- us talking about the new ticker, then getting it mentioned. :-)
ReplyDeletesophia, you make the brownies, I'll make an Apricot Nectar cake.
JD, this place rocks ! !
It is a bit distracting seeing it happen when you're focus is elsewhere, though that is the point, alerting the viewer to a position change.
ReplyDeleteJust may take getting used to.
Fox's method of changing the ticker might actually be better since the changes are more noticeable, and it clears up some of the confusion you might have on TNT/ESPN when the names just "snap" into place without animation. I remember sometimes thinking with that system, "Wait, what just happened?"
ReplyDeleteHm....FOX changes the graphics on the ticker...that is a sign, usually changes in TV come at once. here is my thinking. FOX did not show the line for long, like all of you wanted, because they didn't have a drop down ticker with live scoring at the finish, not because fox hates you or anything else....what did they just add?? Live scoring!!...... I think we will see a change in today's finish.
ReplyDeleteNow if we just get the leaderboard option back for HotPass...
ReplyDeleteGreat move by the Fox Director not cutting the Digger cam into the laps. Makes a big difference.
ReplyDeleteJD
Erik
ReplyDeleteI agree 100 per cent the 'switching of positions is distracting' and over kill imo. Just click the difference or race drivers. Please don't FOX FANCY it up with extra swirly movments..enough movement and space on the screen.
Wow, Erik...it may be the first time we totally agreed on something. :)
TRL, A N cake...sounds like a cake for a Goddess. lol
Yes I like seeing the straight scoring...not making me get vertigo, please nice, Fox.
@ anon 8:08:
ReplyDeleteI really don't know if that will make a difference. For years, networks would show the line at the finish before live scoring existed; besides, they really don't need live scoring for the dropdown; they could just use the scoring as the cars cross the line.
Anybody here have TW with the NAVIGATOR/upgrade (which is really a downgrade?) Happened this week and it's horrible guide and slow lag times for tv channels. I heard some DVR's were messed up.
ReplyDeleteThen I found out DVR for me would only be 5.00 more a month...after a headache CHANGE by TW...sigh..just wondered if any of you TW fans had the new Mystro/NAVIGATOR nonsense since so many love DVRs.
SophiaZ123, I like the new graphics. It does not take up extra space as you said in your post. The animation fits in the same space as the old ticker.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I do not think it is distracting, I had too look hard at the ticker to even notice it, when I am watching the race picture, I dont notice it at all.
Same old lame 4-box pit stop graphic.
ReplyDeleteI also like the new ticker, the change lets me know there is some passing somewhere which is always good to see
ReplyDeleteugh...that KK commercial is embarrassing. That dancing is just cheesy to me and I like Kasey.
ReplyDeletetoo much digger cam on the crank it up...MORE wide angles.
ReplyDeleteSophiaZ123, you CANT hear anything on crank it it from the wide angles!!!! that is the point of crank it up!!!
ReplyDeleteIs is the paint jobs or the lights...all the cars look spectacular on my tv and I don't even have HD?
ReplyDeleteanon 8.25?
ReplyDeletereally, the camera affects the sound? My bad. ;-0
point taken.
I would hate to see what this position-changing ticker would look like at Talladega or Daytona... those are two places where this animation wouldn't work.
ReplyDeleteSophiaZ123, yes the camera that is on the air corresponds with the mic that you hear. when you see an in car shot, you here that car's engine. when you see one of those, speed cars-passing-by shots, you hear the cars as the pass by that camera and that camera mic.
ReplyDeleteI hate that AT&T commerical where that car looks so real I think there's a car on the track wrecking! I think the scroll is working great.
ReplyDeleteBravo --- no missed restart!
ReplyDeleteWeird watching the Stewart channel and not having him talk much. Wonder if he's sick or something ;)
ReplyDeleteOOPS... he hit his front tire changer pitting.
anon
ReplyDeleteI knew that about individual car sounds and cameras. I just did not THINK with my earlier comment.
Still I like to hear the cars (at bigger tracks) when the camera is behind them. At Daytona or Dega a couple years back, SOMEBODY caught the sound just perfect and sounded like jets!
Just like if you are walking down a street, a car sounds louder after it passes you what with the air molecules changing and all.
I can't get over the vivid colors tonight. I wonder if they have saturation tweaked.
Boo, Juan just wrecked. Rats!
How did that happen with Tony's crew member? Lucky he isn't really hurt.
ReplyDeleteBummer.
This is exactly what Fox needs right now, a burst of good racing.
ReplyDeleteAnother bravo -- didn't miss the restart.
ReplyDeleteSorenson short-pitted so Tony had to dive bomb in. Not really his fault, just one of those things.
ReplyDeleteThought it was the tire changer, wasn't. Jack guy, Jason Lee.
I am surprised Fox didn't create a new Digger graphic pushing a name forward and pulling a name back during a pass on their fancy new ticker.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think of the new ticker now that you have seen it for a while?
ReplyDeleteJD
I like it, JD. :-)
ReplyDeleteI also like the ticker
ReplyDeleteUpdated information in real time is always good, though I'm not completely sold on the implementation. Though, I've been able to tune it out when I'm not interested.
ReplyDeleteNot so sure about this under green flag racing. I like Mike, but this should appear out of commercial.
ReplyDeleteJD
no split screen with Helton?
ReplyDeleteI like the ticker.
ReplyDeleteIs this a greed flag interview? well I wont bash it because it is for a good cause.
There we go, double video boxes...nice choice.
ReplyDeleteJD
Hmmmm...we now have split screen.
ReplyDeleteTHANKS FOX@!
JD, I agree with Erik on the ticker.
interesting to hear NASCAR delayed the race 5 minutes. Hmmm, who knew?
I posted as you did about covering the green flag racing JD. Glad they changed it but it took a few laps.
"Is this a greed flag interview?"
ReplyDeletesorry, I honestly meant "greeN" flag.
LMAO
ReplyDeleteAnon I like your typo better!!!
:-0
Somebody coloring their hair :)
ReplyDeleteROTFLMAO
ReplyDeletebevo, I asked my hubby is he had a squirrel on his head. Looked funny.
Bevo
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you made the hair comment. I was going to do so but thought it might be taken wrong from a female type. Then again, certain hair can turn auburn/orangish when in the sun a lot. Maybe it's just sun kissed.
:-)
I'm watching off my dvr, I'm behind, but that line delivered by chris meyers in the pre race "Virgina one of the original 13 colonies, Dick Bergman one of the original 13 people" was out loud funny !!!
ReplyDeleteI wish we got more of Mike Helton on the pre-race shows and perhaps during the race on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteHe really puts a very good face on the sport and he has such a wealth of racing knowledge and experience.
It certainly is amazing that Brian France has become a non-person on these telecasts. Never seen, never heard.
JD
Funny the sun doesn't seem to do anything to the mustache ;)
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteBack to the racing stuff. JD, the ticker has changed on HotPass too.
ReplyDeletemissed re-start..
ReplyDeleteThey were even back and missed cause Chris was doing advertising.
mercy....
I agree about Brian France being much less visible, but I think he's still working behind the scenes. He's the one who just appointed the committee to study drug testing, a few weeks after Hunter and Helton said there were no problems with the drug policy. I'm not sure if France commented at the time or not, but H/H were adamant that the drug policy was fine. Now they've completely changed their tune. I don't think that came out of thin air, I think that came from France.
ReplyDeleteI don't think France did the drug policy study because he wanted to, but the good thing about France is he is insecure enough about NASCAR's PR in the public/corporate America compared to other sports that he will do something for good PR if he deems it necessary. Hunter and Helton don't care about or seem to really comprehend how NASCAR is seen in the public eye (they are more "our way is our way"), and that's why France is needed, like him or not. I do think it's sad he has withdrawn from the race fan's view.
There will be a column up tomorrow about Jim Hunter's comment about the drug testing. That one is incredible. Since Sunday is an off-day there will be a couple of things to comment on.
ReplyDeleteJD
@anon 6:50/6:52--LOL! I was wondering what religion you were there for a minute!
ReplyDeleteJD, I'm with you about Mike Helton. He really puts a human face on NASCAR. He's like your favorite person that you can tell anything, and you know he'll listen.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteI also agree about Helton
ReplyDelete@JD--yes I love when Mr. Helton drops by! (except for that one time a few years ago when he confused us with his explanation after a Busch incident at the Rock.) I love when they used to have the "hot seat" on IWC and he'd stop by! He was always a great guest! And never would tell the boyz exactly how much he made :P
ReplyDeleteCrud! Many good cars torn up :(
Wow that was intense, just switched over to Burton's channel when that happened
ReplyDeletethe booth completely missed all those big hits!!! glad the director caught it. is that on part of the track that the booth cant see as they are usually focused on the track?
ReplyDeleteWhat happened!! i was talking to room mate and all heck broke loose. Inside wall crash, and it looked like the big one. That 10 car got hit too many times..
ReplyDeleteNow those replay moments are when Digger comes in handy.
ReplyDeletePoor Patrick! Nice to hear real sounds.
THANKS FOX.
what an ugly wreak. a bunch of drivers are out.
ReplyDeleteFinally!!! A good use of Digger.
ReplyDeleteGood video and super sounds.
I knew there was a reason for that cussid creature.
Really helps when you're a HotPass driver. Burton's crew has a close-up of the car on their monitor figuring out what needs to be done when he comes in.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletetired of the Digger promotions.
ReplyDeleteHonestly !!! Oh, please..it just 'evolved'
No Darrel, Digger is not calling DW store for a new shirt, he needs some new britches.
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone cares, Flyers just scored. 5-4 with 2 minutes left.
ReplyDeleteThe column that contains the Hunter comment is about NASCAR Now and the information they provided on-the-air for viewers.
ReplyDeleteJD
As usual, just drop me an email with non-topic issues. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJD
I am shocked how many crashe on a short track race? Dang.
ReplyDeleteOk, I am tired of the KB...I don't care if he is the hot driver.
i want to know if he talked to Steve Wallace anymore :-)
awesome shot at the end of the steve interview with denny's crew chief. I like that crane/jib shot as it lifted above the pit box and we got an over head look at what goes on in there. I also like the shot they are using right now to interview Kyle, it is head on right into the windshield.
ReplyDeleteGood angles tonight.
Chad Knaus and Michael Waltrip will once again be with Steve Byrnes on TWIN Monday on SPEED.
ReplyDeleteJD
I want to hear how Carpentier is doing? Isn't he in the 10 car? this red flag would be a good time for follow ups...can't believe they are all still in the care center or what?
ReplyDeleteGoodness...
oops...they heard me before I even posted, JD!!
Nice to hear from Patrick!! Glad he likes the seat.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Patrick, also. That was a hard hit. Hope they talk to the others involved.

ReplyDeletei want to know if he talked to Steve Wallace anymore :-)
Sophia, they interviewed Kyle during the ride around at driver intro's and Kyle pretty much explained everything then.
{hopefully you recorded it) hope this helps
anyone have an answer to my question about the booth? could they not see that part of the track during that crash? they didn't seem to notice that impact until they saw the replay...
ReplyDeleteHate to hear the news about "Suitcase" Jake Elder.
ReplyDeleteSending prayers for a recovery.
Stewart's channel saying something about rain headed their way.
ReplyDeleteit looks like this race will be long over when the rain gets there.
ReplyDeleteJust checked the radar. Rain, but not heavy is in the area.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, the race will get done.
it seems now that the storm is speeding up. mike just said its about an hour to an hour and 1/2 off right now....
ReplyDeleteThis is reminding me of the May 2003 Richmond scenario where the race suddenly got called with just a few laps to go when a sudden storm system moved in. That was the first Richmond race I ever saw.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the radar in motion, it looks like the rain should be there within 70-90 minutes or so, so it could be there before the end of the race. However, the forecast is calling for widely scattered rain and thunderstorms, so it may break up (it's a big band or rain) or miss the track entirely.
ReplyDeleteAnother yellow
ReplyDeleteI like the new "real time" ticker they're using tonight. It's easier to see the drivers than the other ones were and the "movement" as someone passes or loses ground doesn't bother me at all.
ReplyDeleteWe have been watching that as they change the modes and it goes through race situations.
ReplyDeleteIt is tough to take at first, and then it kind of settles down. It certainly does help not to have another lower third crawl at the same time.
JD
"It certainly does help not to have another lower third crawl at the same time."
ReplyDeletewhat are you talking about JD??? what lower ticker are you seeing???
I like the new UPPER ticker and it does not distract me at all. Also I think the movement is better, as you can see who is moving where. The one ESPN uses just flashes to a position, and I have to say "what just happened???" with the FOX one, I know what happened
i think too much stuff on the screen. W/o that ticker, the race view would be cleaner. Miss the old day sometimes.
ReplyDeleteyou would rather FOX not use the ticker??? WHY?? it has revolutionized the way sports are covered on TV. I can get all the information I want from one ticker on the same screen as the race. It was won countless awards and congratulations. I don't know why anyone would want to get rid of it!!

ReplyDeleteUm, Anon I believe I said it helps NOT to have a lower third ticker.
ReplyDeleteCalm down my friend, we talk about the ESPN Networks who mandate a lower third for their racing and other sports all the time.
Friday night, as both SPEED and ESPN Classic aired the Nationwide race, fans could clearly see the difference.
JD
I don't like tickers anyway. I can't keep up. Thank goodness for leaderboard, trackpass, fox trax, etc. I can't watch a ticker and the race at the same time anyway.
ReplyDeleteJD, I know what you said. but you said it after talking about the FOX broadcast, implying the FOX broadcast had a ticker and you thought it would help if they drop it. hope that helps!
