In-Progress From Darlington: Sprint Cup Series Race On Fox
Major League Baseball is rapidly becoming a sport that goes hand-in-hand with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Once again this Saturday night, Fox will have baseball games in-progress that will lead directly into the Darlington coverage.
The Hollywood Hotel is scheduled to take to the air at 7PM Eastern Time. Last time this baseball situation happened, only some portions of the country saw the complete pre-race show with Jeff Hammond, Darrell Waltrip and host Chris Myers.
Darlington is a touchy subject for veteran NASCAR fans, who want two races returned to this venerable track each season. It should be interesting to see how the Hollywood Hotel handles that issue, or if it is even mentioned.
Mike Joy handled the Cup qualifying and a practice sessions earlier in the week, but Saturday night will be the first time this veteran play-by-play announcer will be seeing Cup cars racing at speed on this new pavement. The dynamic of the competition is almost completely unknown. What was billed as a wreck-fest on Friday night was relatively smooth until fuel pick-up problems caused one big accident.
Joy, Waltrip and Larry McReynolds will have to be prepared for either a memorable race on a fantastic new surface or a Bristol-like single-file parade with passing basically limited to pit road. That will put the pressure on the pit reporters to document the action that may decide the race.
Veterans Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda will be in the very loud trenches and there should be some new challenges. On Friday, it was ESPN's Jamie Little who talked to drivers outside the Infield Care Center and in the garage if they had dropped-out with mechanical problems.
As the Cup evening wears-on, there is a distinct possibility that lots of cars may fall by the wayside. The follow-up in the garage area and documenting the frustration with the new track and the speeds should be an interesting challenge to present. Reality always has a way of being flavored with politics in this sport.
After the race, ESPNEWS will again have live coverage of the press conferences from the Infield Media Center. We remind you of this because once again SPEED will hold the original airing of Victory Lane until Sunday night.

6PM Eastern and all three BB games in 8th inning so unless there are extra innings baseball should be over by pre-race show @ 7PM.
ReplyDeleteMy local game is in the 9th inning. I think everyone should be ok this week for a 7:00 PM start.
ReplyDeleteThe last of the 3 games (Cardinals/Brewers) is tied in the 9th inning, 3-3. It may have to get shifted to FX. Even though the broadcast time is the same as last week, Darlington is actually on an earlier schedule. Opening ceremonies for Darlington are scheduled for 7:20, 15 minutes earlier than Richmond.

ReplyDeletemike,
ReplyDeletePlease tell us if the game runs over into the pre-race for those of us who cannot see it. Thanks.
JD
XETV in San Diego had Cardinals/Brewers game. It is over. So NASCAR should be clear for air in San Diego.
ReplyDeleteSt Louis just takes the lead in the top of the 9th, though the game clearly won't be over before the pre-race starts.
ReplyDeleteThe Milwaukee game is probably going to go over. The Cards just scored two in the top of the 9th, but there's no way the game will be over in time. I really can't stand this.
ReplyDeletewatching St Louis/Milw on internet and it doesnt look so good to be over by top of hour. Even if St Louis takes lead (bases loaded/2 outs top ninth) Milwaukess still has to bat in bottom of ninth

ReplyDelete"XETV in San Diego had Cardinals/Brewers game."
ReplyDeleteSorry, my mistake. XETV actually had the Diamondbacks at Cubs. That game IS over.
They can't go over to FX because the Manchurian Candidate is on. We're going to miss pre-race show. This really stinks.
ReplyDeleteDon't know what Philly area had but it's over and I have the prerace unlike last week
ReplyDeleteFX is not an option for a regional Fox game anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat areas are still watching baseball and what game are you seeing?
ReplyDeleteJD
NASCAR is in fact on the air in San Diego. Am I the only one with live NASCAR coverage?
ReplyDeleteThe stupid Fox 4 affiliate in DFW just interrupted programming just because there is a thunderstorm in Dallas. They had no reason to do so. They'd never do that to the NFL.
ReplyDeleteJD, any idea why Hot Pass cannot show the pre-race activities? They show the Fox broadcast in the corner of the Earnhardt channel, but why don't they show the pre-race?
ReplyDeleteOh Good, two outs !!!
St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers Dan McLaughlin & Bill Schroeder 8%
ReplyDeleteMARKETS INCLUDE: Kansas City, Memphis, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Tulsa
darbar,
ReplyDeleteFox has about thirty million reasons why they cannot show the same content.
JD
Thanks Anon,
ReplyDeleteIs the Brewers game the only one left in progress?
JD
Oh yuck, a double. Prince Fielder is up. If they tie this, we're out of luck.
ReplyDeleteHotpass does show the pre-race. See Channel 799.
ReplyDeleteHotpass does show the pre-race. See Channel 799.
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 7:03 PM,
ReplyDeleteTornadoes are possible. The lives of those in danger is just a bit more important right now.
Game over. Racing, here we come
ReplyDeletesorry for double post - thought I just hit it once!
ReplyDeleteThe other two games finished in time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up on 799. Now if things go over in the future, I'll know where to tune in.

ReplyDeletechip,
ReplyDeleteJust tell us why and use your own words. Saying things "suck" does not get it done in this forum.
I could not agree that this pre-race so far is flat and disjointed.
JD
whats with KB and those stupid sunglasses - other than money - K Petty made a funny comment on Trading paint that wearing those sunglasses is ruining his career - as opposed to wrecking Jr.
ReplyDeleteSo all the Fox MLB games are over now at 7:14PM Eastern time. Thanks for the help.
ReplyDeleteJD
Chip, sorry for the typo: the pre-race IS flat and disjointed today.
@anon 7:03--I SCREAMED when they broke in to tell us absolutely NOTHING! They could have put up a ticker...
ReplyDeletewe know JD - you apologize because you care.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a good pre-race show today. I don't understand.
ReplyDeleteThey are making MORE digger products??? What are they thinking?!
ReplyDeleteOnce you get DW and Hammond talking about real race issues, things change to serious in a hurry.
ReplyDeleteIt sure is hard after watching Hammond and DW on SPEED to watch them do their Fox "act."
JD

Many people are fans of digger. Have you been to a race lately? I see many digger shirts everywhere I look.
digger has a myspace page
ReplyDeleteI wonder where you can buy Digger products.... Oh wait they have a 20 minute pre race commercial for him.
ReplyDeleteLOL, anon 7:29! Thanks for the good laugh! Enjoy the race everyone!
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to buy a Rodenator for Digger...
ReplyDeleteGreen flag about to come out, I expect a good race and good coverage. Everyone enjoy the race.
ReplyDeleteCrud! Tony and Elliott :(
ReplyDeleteI like how the director called up tony's in car cam to get his reaction.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is going to be a long night for the TV gang.
ReplyDeleteCan they keep up w/all the action? So far so good I think,
ReplyDeleteDid Tony really give a 'thumbs up' to Elliott or were they guys kidding???
ReplyDeleteI just finished a cake and got on here. Bummer about Elliott...I taped the last hour of Race Day as the kitchen tv does not have digital.
I hope this race is not a demolition derby but...sheesh.
What was said about the director talking to Tony? I read all the posts first but I feel so OUT OF IT tonight...only caught a few minutes of Fox pre race in between cake mixing noise.
THANKFULLY SW OHIO got the pre race show..this baseball thing is getting annoying.
sophia,
ReplyDeleteYou could not see it, but I believe it was the middle thumb.
"Did Tony really give a 'thumbs up' to Elliott or were they guys kidding???"
ReplyDeleteSophia, That was a sarcastic "thumbs-up"
Also, When I said the director "called up" tony's camera, That means he told the video switcher operator to take Tony's in car camera so we could all see Tony's sarcastic "thumbs up" on our TV screens.
Hope that helps!
It was a thumbs up - just a very sarcastic one!
ReplyDeleteWhat is up with the 11? Have they said why he is at the back of the field?
DW, in the old days the outside car entering the turn backed off and yielded to the innside lane car. Now anybody foolish enough to try passing on the inside entering a turn has to back off or hope they don't have to put a wheel on the now abrupt transition between racing surface and apron which Sadler just admitted. DW still incapable of admitting his advice was outdated.
ReplyDeleteJD, that did not look like the middle thumb to me. It looked like your normal thumb not any bad gesture. Do you think I would complement the director if he did that, JD?
ReplyDeleteGo look at the video again, It did not look like an obscene gesture to me. And they even replayed it! what does that tell you?
JD
ReplyDeleteThanks...I figured that as Tony looked really honked off!! Oh my.
Poor Elliott...he admits a rookie mistake was made by him :(
Did you see that on Hot Pass or the Fox broadcast?
ReplyDeleteThis whole "Wild Thing" thing is getting extremely old.
ReplyDeleteYou don't hear announcers call Dale Jr "Junior"
The shrub wants to be another intimidator and went out of his way to give himself a nickname and a reputation to start it off.
Too young Kyle Busch. sorry.
Anon, thanks for the explanation about the director going to Tony's car...my room mate said it looked like a thumb earlier but with the camera angle and the gloves, tough to tell but I missed it as I was going into the kitchen between tv's
ReplyDeleteBut Tony was mad so OBVIOUSLY he was being sarcastic....

The thumb? or the Elliot interview?
Be specific JD.
@anons 7:28 & 7:29 (not sure if you're the same or not *giggle*)--but yup I LOVE Digger, I think he's cute! And I'm a friend of his on myspace too :). I hear the plush is on low stock but should have more mid-June :)
ReplyDelete@JD--I backed up the DVR and it looked like the thumb to me as well...
Sophia - when a director picks a camera shot he "calls it up" - so it goes out to the broadcast. A tech term.
ReplyDeletegymmie,
ReplyDeleteIt did to me too, but I sure had to go back and take a second look.
JD

ReplyDeleteKyle busch also GAVE HIMSELF the nik name Rowdy.
ReplyDeleteI always thought nicknames were given by those around you...
sorry, that kb is such a narcissist.
This track really deserves a second race. JPM you go boy!
not to get on personal comments, JD but some drivers are just too much ..you know what I am saying?
:-)
anon
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining the tech term.
I like learning about tv behind the scenes stuff on this blog.
TWIN on Monday is Biffle, Schrader, Waltrip and Knaus.
ReplyDeleteGreg Jarrett who now works for MRN radio worked for TNT/NBC two years ago and prior. He was first person I ever heard who gave Kyle Busch the nickname "the shrub" as in small bush. That name I can accept.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the TWIN reminder.
ReplyDeleteI am going to pull the blinds, tape the show and watch it in reverse to see Kenny and Mikey! :)
But don't tell anybody.
Wow...that pit guy on the 11 was busy multitasking... good thing he has long arms.
I like the way the Fox ticker changes better tonight...without all the fancy swooshy animation..anybody notice that just now?
ReplyDeleteIf only the car numbers were easier to read...but Bevo or somebody has addressed that.
"I like the way the Fox ticker changes better tonight...without all the fancy swooshy animation..anybody notice that just now?"
ReplyDeleteIt is the same this week as it was last week Sophia. And I like the animation, It helps determine who went where and not just "flash" into position.
That is exactly what I was looking for. They have been working to change it, and I wondered what they chose for this race.
ReplyDeleteJD
WOW! 'Dobie Gillis' blast from the past commercial.
ReplyDeleteOh, only for Ohio...sorry, showing my age for sure but I wondered what he was doing in a commercial during NASCAR. Local deal.
I like Jr's retro paint scheme.
Has NASCAR ever done a race where EVERYBODY did a retro paint scheme? I think that would look nice..as I love the older paint schemes, myself. That Mountain Dew car looks nice.
On the ticker...maybe it was after teh pit stops, instead of a circular motion..the names simply changed positions....but I shall pay attention...
See,, it just slid a name into place instead of the wider circular motion...Last week it gave me a little vertigo to watc it change...tonight it does not.
JD, what has changed?
ReplyDeleteI did not see a circular motion last week. I saw it last week looking like the same thing you are seeing now.
ReplyDeleteDid we actually see the pass for the lead?
ReplyDeleteumm no - commercial
ReplyDeletecant blame Fox - they don't know when it will happen, sheesh
ReplyDeletenrfan
ReplyDeleteI am glad you asked because I was just wondering WHEN DID BIFFLE pass the shrub??
by the way, thanks for the history on that nik. to whomever mentioned it.
I like the ticker when they change position - one car moves over and they swap positions. Cool
ReplyDeleteguys and girls - FOX did show the pass for the lead - I saw it. After the commercial but they did show it.
ReplyDeleteJust getting ready to say someone with Fox was actually critical about Kyle Busch... but ol' DW came to his defense.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it
Great exchange between Jeff HAmmond Lary Mac and DW about drivers talking and complain on the radio. This is what makes me continue to watch FOX and not switch on the radio.
ReplyDeleteWHy does everyone like to bash on little ol' Kyle? He is just a good driver. face it.
ReplyDeleteyep, I agree bevo. He sucks up to Jr on Trackside, but just can't see that KyBu is playing dirty. Fox is doing a nice job on the pitstops, imo.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain how a wreck occurs on the *active* camera yet the director switches away from it? Isn't anyone actually watching the monitors?
ReplyDeleteThat was a tough pit stop under caution. The 4 box thing just does not work on this track.
ReplyDeleteJD
I don't hate Kyle Busch but I'm tired of the constant gushing especially by DW. I don't know if they have some kind of business dealings or what but it's to the point of being embarrassing.
ReplyDeletespring,
ReplyDeleteThat has been a problem for this group, even on the big speedways. Its weird.
JD
Did Chris Myers get behind Hammond when he was talking about brakes and hold up a sign? What did it say? I missed it.
ReplyDeleteJD
spring, that is my gripe with cameras when SOMETHING happens yet somebody calls for a change.
ReplyDeleteIt happened last season on ESPN a lot.
Bevo, I agree on DW and the KyBu thing....too much.
JD,
ReplyDeleteThe sign said "Hi, Mom!"
For some reason, I actually chuckled and didn't mind to too much, although it did detract my attention a little bit from what Jeff was saying.
I missed the sign, too, JD..I am making a slideshow of chipmunk pics for my mom..and trying to LISTEN to the tv..my MRN radio affiliate lowered power..and I don't want to set myself up to be WATCHING tv at the end of the race....we know what will happen with the camera work :(
ReplyDeleteI know what will happen and can't scream when we know the drill. Not being negative, folks...just realistic.
I hope darlington is full of fans...I like the history of this track.
"....we know what will happen with the camera work :("
ReplyDeleteSophia that did not happen last week. where were you??? Face it, Fox is better now.
what will happen with the camerawork? We wont see the finish? YES WE WILL.
ReplyDeleteWe won't see the burn out - YES WE WILL. Well unless there is a commercial
Will it be any worse than ESPN or TNT? Not likely.
And the comment was NEGATIVE.
ESPN did a great job last night. That was great at the finish.
ReplyDeleteKLLI Dallas/Ft Worth streams MRN/PRN - do a google search KLLI listen live
ReplyDeleteESPN showed how to handle the end of a race last night.
ReplyDeleteWhere did Biffle go?? They left before the crew dropped the jacks for a replay of him slowing down.
ReplyDeleteBevo
ReplyDeleteYep, last night was super ending with great camera work. Truex leading.
ESPN KILLED Fox's finishes all season with what they did last night. I LOVED it could not have been happier. I think they had a better show last night than what we are seeing tonight for sure!
ReplyDeleteBiffle had a vibration...they are mentiong him now. Ugh...transmission fluid problem...leaking? Not good.
ReplyDeleteThat is uncalled for. FOX is having a much better broadcast tonight then ESPN's yesterday.
ReplyDeleteWTH did they NOT split screen HAMMOND during green flag racing? not good.
ReplyDeleteDid we ever really figure out what happened to Biffle?
ReplyDeleteMaybe transmission for The Biff
ReplyDeleteno one knows yet, JD.
ReplyDeleteanon 9:36 PM
ReplyDeleteno harm meant. personal opinion is just that. personal. I thought they did a great job. totally just my opinion.
Boy, I think Biffle was a big story. He got lost in the shuffle like Busch coming back up through the field after the penalty.
ReplyDeleteBiffle should be a good interview.
JD
Looks like we will get that interview sooner than we thought
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletei was hoping for the bif out of that commercial.
ReplyDeleteKind of feels like there is 25 laps to go instead of 125.
ReplyDeleteIs that a problem JD?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteWow! Poor Biffle...tires keep coming loose on his cars....mechanical issues...I hate to see that again.
ReplyDeletedamn, feel bad for biffle.
ReplyDeletepoor Greg, perhaps he is rethinking signing that Roush contract extension
ReplyDeletePit strategy should get REAL interesting.
ReplyDeletedon't forget all those Rouch cars had issues last night. Wonder if it is spilling over to tonight?
ReplyDeleteTWIN should now be very interesting on Monday. Wonder what Biffle will say.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see Junior in the position of having Gordon and Johnson surround him. Who needs a win more than Jr? Jeff...
JD
Listening to radio chatter for the 16. They are loading on to the trailer.
ReplyDeletehaha...love it JD...and we saw how that went in Dega...
ReplyDeleteAnyone hear Jeff Burton just say the most important thing his mother taughth him was to "do unto others as they've done unto you?"
ReplyDeleteI'll bet his mother wants to crawl under a rock, or else she's one tough mama.
I swear Roush is pouring over from yesterday. No way that they can have THAT many issues 2 nights in a row in that many cars.
ReplyDeleteTracy
ReplyDeleteI caught that J Burton comment, lol. I can't believe they didn't re edit that one...the interviewer was NOT listening to let that one slip by...ouch.
So if others screw over you, do them over too?? Don't think so...
Oh my!
I am sure...Bif has NOT signed his new deal....I was guessing his interview was throwing his hat into the free agent pool.
ReplyDeleteThat was why I asked about Biffle before. When one thing goes for a Roush car, lots of times it spells trouble for the other team cars.
ReplyDeleteI guess the pit reporters just could not get an answer. Usually, we see them go get the wheel and show it to us with the rounded openings.
JD
A Dave Blaney sighting!
ReplyDeleteThey really need to get rid of the four screen pit stops...
ReplyDelete...hope that's not being too negative ;)
Very excellent explanation from Hammond!!
ReplyDeleteWhen Hammond was talking about the glue on the lugs, was anyone else audio about 2 seconds behind his lips?
ReplyDeleteno audio problems here.
ReplyDeleteAnd the split screen to go with it
ReplyDeleteWhy does the "illegal lug nuts" spree a couple of years ago go through my mind right now?
ReplyDeleteLoved it!
ReplyDeletebevo - GREAT call
ReplyDeleteIt was AWESOME to see Blaney get some TV time :)
ReplyDelete@Kyle--it wasn't behind for me
AGAIN with Kyle Busch booed. I wish i could boo.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure DW will be scolding everyone who boos Kyle Busch before too long :)

Fox has used the video bumpers of the leading driver going into commercial even under green.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of those?
JD
Anonymous @10:45 PM
ReplyDeleteNOt to continue this, but in JD's defense (not that he needs it) of removing the comment you made.... You were not talking bad about KBush. You were wishing him serious bodily harm.
I will take care of all that stuff in email, but thanks. We normally keep our comments limited to TV and the issues that are affecting the broadcast.
ReplyDeleteThe rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page.
JD
JD what do you mean by video bumper
ReplyDeleteWith the new GPS scoring system, I wonder what they will use for the final lap? Since the crew saw the ESPN finish yesterday and has the same camera, I wonder if we will see the infield camera and the big zoom into the flagman?
ReplyDeleteJD
Totally understand. I'm new to the page. My excitemnt tends to get the best of me! Sorry to all!!!
ReplyDeleteI dont mind the commercial bumps as long as they are kept short. They add emotion to the broadcast.
ReplyDeletenrf,
ReplyDeleteThat is the playback of the leading driver with those "bumpers" that show them seated in that theater setting and they say something like "the drama continues" and then the commercial comes.
Normally, in the past the TV networks did not cover live racing with that kind of stuff. The reason was simple, we see the faces of the drivers on the commercials in the show all the time. It is just a choice.
JD
Can't say I'm a big fan of the video bumpers.
ReplyDeleteThanks JD I actually like the bumpers (I was actually wondering earlier if they taped every driver or just the usual suspects).
ReplyDeleteThere ya go, that was a "bumper" with Kyle. The ones before commercials are called out-bumps and the ones returning from commercial are called in-bumps.
ReplyDeleteIts all about education here at TDP.
JD
That new KB bumper of a "sequel" just now was clever.
ReplyDeleteIf Kyle has problems and Carl wins the race, we'll see Carl cross the finish line, and then the camera will quickly cut to Carl's mom celebrating.
ReplyDeleteJD ABSOLUTELY hate them.
ReplyDeleteAlso think the autism commercial bumper filmed at the same time and also played going to or coming back from commercial annoys me.
Wish they would stick with the tried and true top five head shots/car numbers graphic.
If this race stays green, we will not see may cars cross the finish line.
ReplyDeleteHope we get a caution 10 laps to go, otherwise this finish will have no excitement.
ReplyDeleteIt chews-up some time, but I still think it is weird to see the driver you have been watching race in his car suddenly sitting with popcorn out of his car.
ReplyDeleteI know what they are trying to do, but I am a bit old school. These guys are racing hard, leave the focus on them...ya know?
JD
Yup, here we go for the finish....should be interesting.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree JD on the bumps. And amazing turn if Kyle wins after all those issues!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see all the junk that will get thrown on the track by all the #88 fans when Kyle wins
ReplyDeleteJD, I think the zoom into the flagman angle would work here. they could do that, AND then, take the wide shot. And they wont miss a thing. the field is that spread out.
ReplyDeleteSAy what you want about Kyle Bush, but that kid is having one heck of a year. I think that the announcing crew fawns on him a bit toooooo much, but he does deserve some if not most of the attention he is receiving.
ReplyDeletePersonally I with Steven Wallace would have boxed his ears last week, but meh you know.
Well, well, well....great shot.
ReplyDeletevery nice wide shot!
ReplyDeleteSee sophia?? I told you they were better.
Kyle drives the wheels off of anything with a motor. Kids a baller.
ReplyDeleteGood job on the finish, only because of the HUGE lead gave them enough time to pull it off.
ReplyDeleteIf not for the 6 second lead we wouldn't have seen the rest of the lead lap cross the line.
I don't believe it!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Psyche out goes to the flagman.
ReplyDeleteI am just going "oh well"
Then they showed MORE CARS from IN FRONT of the FINISH LINE!!
Thank you Fox. Big improvement.
Now where are my hedgeclippers.....
*sigh*
some drivers are like gum on your shoe aren't they??
;-)
props to fox. good coveage of the finish.
ReplyDeleteAnyone taking bets on who will wreck kyle at the allstar race next week?
ReplyDeleteAnd how much you want to bet JR wins, just so the media can keep saying he hasn't won a points race in 2 + years :)
Great finish, I saw all my drivers cross the line. Kyle perhaps they used the flagman as filler, think positive it will help you sleep better tonight.
ReplyDeleteGot to hand it to Fox just like I did for ESPN last night - thanks for finally showing the finish of a race.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if this keeps up for both of them or if it was just this track.
Anon 11.11
ReplyDeleteYou are one smart grasshopper.
How did you know the plan for the end?
Never mind...just glad your hunch worked.
HUGE IMPROVEMENT but I was totally immersed in photo editing and half watching this VERY LONG race..but enjoyed it ...well, except for the winner...
I know, i know...he's on a hot streak...yada, yada.
some drivers you like, some you love...some
,
Dry wipe the camera!! there we go
ReplyDeleteWonder what the fans did? We saw that boo played over and over. They couldn't have been glad he won!
ReplyDeletepsst... NASCAR officials - take a real good close look at those lug nuts ;)
ReplyDeleteAnyone just see that?? Awesome directing! They cut away from the interview camera to the high shot of victory lane, so someone could clean the lens and get a clear shot of the kyle interview. good job.
ReplyDeleteBoy, what a night this would be to see the Victory Lane show at midnight Eastern! I wish SPEED would give in....
ReplyDeleteI know JD! We should start a petition right here.
ReplyDeleteI WANT VICTORY LANE on Saturday night for Saturday races!!
It was a good job of directing to go to another shot to get the lens clean and it is what they should do on a regular basis (all networks) when the VL camera gets wet. Unfortunately, it's more often that they conduct the entire interview with a spotted lens. Hopefully tonight's example will stick for the future.
ReplyDeleteJD
ReplyDeleteWhy can't the camera men EVER wipe off the camera when it is soaking wet?
Ok..they switched the cam off Kyle to do it tonight..but someimes, like last night there was only one camera and we looked thru water marks...
I once remember YEARS ago somebody using a rag to dry OFF the lens and laughing but I was THANKFUL.
it may be a no no (to clean a lens with a cloth on tv) but necessary sometimes if NO ALTERNATIVE cam is around.
That's always bugged me and I thought I would ask.
if you see this.

Sophia, I have directed television before. Maybe its just a director's hunch.
OK points and Top 35 please
ReplyDeleteok...i waited until the Jr interview to post my wet lens question but it's annoying when they dont' clean it..isn't it??
ReplyDeleteSophiaZ123,
ReplyDeleteThe TV crews always try to not interrupt the shot even when it is wet. What they did today was great. it was the best way to handle the situation.
what about kyle being booed all over tv...then he wins...and apparently the fans don't react? I don't buy it!
ReplyDeleteHaven't had time to read the other 185 comments so please forgive me if I repeat anything....
ReplyDeleteMajor thank you to Fox for the finish line camera work. Until they prove otherwise I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they only used the winner zoom cam and the flagman because they knew Kyle was way out in front and they had time to do so. Doing the same thing cost us the 8-18 finish for 2nd place at Richmond and the 11-07 last turn crash for 3rd at Texas but that camera work was fantastic in this situation. Like I said I hope this was a judgment call based on the winning margin and we won't see that anymore when 2nd, 3rd, etc. are within a second of the leader on the final lap.
I thought the rest of the broadcast was very good as well. The on-air gang is still top notch, and other than a few minor hiccups from the replay department early in the race (trying to show a replay of the 18 hitting the wall and instead showing nothing and trying to show a lead change between the 18 and 16 and instead replaying Kyle lapping the 40 car) I didn't notice any issues.
An Emmy award winning performance from where I sat. Great job Fox!
sophia -
ReplyDeleteI imagine someone was in a production meeting :)
Anon
ReplyDeletethanks about the clean lens camera. The point is, they (all stations) OFTEN LEAVE the camera a mess!?!?
it's common sense to cut to another cam to clean, then return but not always done.
Like I say some years back (well since I started watching in 2004) SOMEBODY actually took less than 2 seconds to clean the lens, and I enjoyed the winning interview much better.
I forgave the cloth on the lens for a moment..but I am an amateur photographer and that stuff makes me crazy. :)
To anon that used to be a director and had a hunch, I still appreciate your insight.
JD, thanks for a great blog site. Sorry to see you were busy tonight taking care of the place but we all greatly appreciate it.
Soph
Missed a little bit of the post-race show. Did I miss Fox showing the top 35 outcome? Did the #22 get back in and if so who did he knock out?
ReplyDeleteJust a reminder, ESPNEWS is the source for post-race tonight because of the SPEED decision.
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for stopping by, there will be new posts up tomorrow for your comments on Wendy Venturini's primetime special and a look at the big Monday night match-ups on ESPN2 and SPEED
SPEED is Biffle, Waltrip, Schrader and Knaus with Steve Byrnes.
ESPN2 is former Darlington winner Ricky Craven, Mike Massaro and Ray Evernhamd with Allen Bestwick.
