In-Progress In Charlotte: "RaceDay" And Sprint Cup Race
SPEED kicks-off the live NASCAR programming with a two hour RaceDay at 3PM Eastern Time. That will be lead into the NASCAR on Fox coverage of the Coke 600 from the Lowe's Motor Speedway.
John Roberts will host RaceDay, which this season has been a big success for SPEED. A double digit increase in TV ratings has been primarily driven by the diversity of content within this show.
Both Kenny Wallace and Jimmy Spencer have fully embraced their roles on this program and understand that their opinions carry a lot of weight with the fans. It is up to the production staff to keep these two in check, and this year that has been done with great success. The "panelists" have been clicking with the fans.
This week, defending race winner Casey Mears will be a guest along with Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne. The show will look at drivers who had their first NASCAR win in Charlotte. It will also review the opening of the new facility at the Victory Junction Camp sponsored by Kurt Busch. Finally, Roberts and company will preview how things are shaping up for the "Chase for the Championship."
Following the Kurt Busch theme, Wendy Venturini will offer her regular "Real Deal" feature profiling Kurt Busch. This season, he certainly has been the forgotten brother and his appearances in the top ten have been sparse.
Rutledge Wood will be reporting from the premier of the new NASCAR '09 video game from EA Sports. Wood is continuing to try and define his role on SPEED with appearances as both a credible reporter and a source of amusement.
Jimmie Johnson will also take TV viewers for a tour of Hendrick Motorsports, which is located right down the road from LMS next to the Concord Airport. Ryan Newman will also appear in a feature on this program and will be driving go-karts. As we said earlier, there is something for everyone on RaceDay.
The full NASCAR on Fox crew takes over at 5PM for the Coke 600. Chris Myers will host the show from the Hollywood Hotel with Jeff Hammond alongside. It will be Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds upstairs in the announce booth. Down on pit road will be Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda.
There are only two races left in the Fox portion of the Sprint Cup TV package. After this, the team moves to Dover and then is done. There should be a heightened sense of urgency and a concentrated effort to put everything into this telecast as the season begins to wrap-up for Joy and company.
After the race, Victory Lane on SPEED will be on-the-air at 11PM, but it might be wise to put an extra hour of time on the VCR or the DVR. With live racing, you just never know.
This post will serve to host your comments about RaceDay, the Sprint Cup race on Fox and Victory Lane. To add your opinion, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. Thank you for taking the time to stop by.
Rutledge Wood's major skill in doing his job appears to be the fact that nothing he says or does embarrasses him.
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame. He's not funny and adds nothing to the show.
I used to think it was "cool" that on raceday they had an audience, now it is getting pathetic. They have raised the stage so we dont continously see beer swigging guys without shirts waving their beers as if it was some trophy and now everyone has their signs on poles so they can waive it behind the guys talking. I see 2 or 3 white boards so they can write new messages, wonder if someone is renting the space out to others who didn't have the foresight to bring a pole?
ReplyDeleteAlso, what is up with the white earplugs that the panel are using? It looks like they have a ear full of spider webs. Is it cotton so they don't hear the people behind them?
BillWebz
I know most are watching /blogging Indy but I liked the discussion about the Denny/Brad incident yesterday. I usually do not agree with Jimmy but he got it right today. The funny part was the video clip of Denny and Brad from post race interviews; they were sitting next to each other (there was a chair in between) the entire time Denny complained about Brad. Brad handled it pretty well.
ReplyDeleteI have been switching back and forth during commercials to the Indy and I just don't get it, why do all the Cup drivers feel they have to wear sunglasses during interviews? Are they going for the "cool" look? if so, the big head phones kill the effect.
ReplyDeleteDoes the inetrviewer bring along sponsored glasses for them to wear (or are the drivers required to wear them due to sponsor duties)? "Rayban, the official sponser of Matt Kenseths Eye Protection".
BillWebz
I had to search youtube this morning for video of the "fight" from last night, nascar.com didn't have it online.
ReplyDeleteDenny came off like a baby last night, it reminds me of what JG (my favorite) said a few years ago over the radio which made it on TV "Don't he know who I am?" when he was trying to get around a slow car... Denny came off the same way last night.
BillWebz
Bill with the exception of Jeff Burton (he has eye senstivity issues) I think the drivers that wear glasses have personal sevices agreements with the sunglasses company.
ReplyDeleteHey I was right, guy with White board wrote on it
ReplyDelete"For Sale $10"
BillWebz
JD - got a tech question about tonights CC600. Do the broadcasters have to change equipment when going from day to night? Or do they have any special equipment that they have to use at night versus day (ie cameras)?
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
SPEED should be ashamed of themselves. Why did they sign off by saying stay tuned for a Formula 1 replay? They should not even attempt to steal viewers from NASCAR.
ReplyDeleteI missed that part about the Formula 1, but am curious to see how long it will take on Fox prerace before they mention the Indy
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
WOW this is interesting. on ABC is a NASCAR program hosted by Rusty. this is competing with the FOX pre-race show.
ReplyDeleteThis ABC program seems very interesting.
ReplyDeleteBill,
ReplyDeleteJust like your 35mm still camera, the engineers change the iris as the sun goes down and eventually wind-up with a new setting for the Musco lighting at the track.
In TV, it is called "shading" because it has to be done immediately when shade comes over a football or baseball field. The Director will say "shade camera 3" so it gets adjusted before they use it on the air.
JD
JD, I dont have a paid program...I have something called "Identity of a racing champion presented by Lifelock". It seems very interesting. Kind of like that ABC summer series last year and with the same style as those NMG programs. You arnt seeing this? I am on KGTV in San Diego
ReplyDeleteThis Program seems VERY interesting. I CANT believe you are not seeing it JD!!
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteThanks JD - It always seems the colors are more vibrant at night, I thought they would use special equipment to achieve that.
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
Formula 1 on the Prerace now, and Indy mentioned at 9 minutes in - didn't take long. Mentioned it before even mentioning the Truck race from yesterday.
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
I have Identity of a Racing Champion as well. "The mystique of NASCAR drivers is examined, with behind-the-scenes footbage; race highlights and interviews.
ReplyDeleteI think that Fox / Speed should coordinate the pre-race to have Speed provide pre-race coverage up until the half hour before opening ceremonies.
ReplyDeleteJust my opinion

---Gee, anonymous. why wouldn't speed want to promote its network?
Is the hollywood hotel located where it appears to be in the infield when looking through the "blue screen" windows or is it outside the track?
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
The Hollywood Hotel and the ESPN Tech Center both travel to the tracks. This week, the HH is located right where it was shown behind pit road.
ReplyDeleteThe Tech Center is located either in the infield or near the TV compound depending on the size of the track.
Guys, that lifelock program is the one I am talking about. Created especially for this post-Indy timeslot.
JD
The hollywood hotel is in the infield. the "windows" behind the anchors are not real. they of kind of like a TV behind the anchor.
ReplyDeleteIt is certainly nice to see an emphasis on Memorial day at the charlotte race versus the focus on all things Indy that I witnessed this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteOk don't have the guy do the pledge unless he actually knows it. Pipers made up for it however. I just hate that people mess up the pledge, for goodness sakes its 31 words.
ReplyDeleteDid I miss the Chris Meyers hit list this week? Or did they just not do it?
Why didn't the military do the anthem?? ouch. They should have.
ReplyDelete@anon 3:45--I happen to like Rutledge and I think he has his funny parts. I do agree w/JD in that he needs to find that perfect balance. For when they're using him as a reporter that he's taken seriously.
ReplyDelete@bill h--moola...they're sponsoring the drivers. Drivers don't do much unless they're getting paid for it. Even their "perfectly" time drink swigs get them points with their refreshment sponsors.
Any mention so far of Kenny Schrader driving a Richard Childress car tonight?
ReplyDeleteanyone having audio problems? I am using COX in san diego
ReplyDeleteFox needs to fix their ticker. Its all screwed up now. The #66 started in the back, but fox showed him in the top 20. The time behind the leader was correct, though.
ReplyDeletewow, this is going to be a long night.
ReplyDeleteWow companies are getting good when the viewers don't know there watching an infomercial! "Lifelock"
ReplyDeleteIt's also not worth it.
How fast will 1/2 the field be lapped?
ReplyDeleteSo am I the only one watching the F1 race? Singe file racing YAWN
ReplyDeleteWhen Steve Byrnes introduced Humpy Wheeler, I couldn't put my finger on what was different about Steve. All of a sudden it hit me that he has dyed his hair. Must have done it himself because it is way bad.
ReplyDeleteCarl Edwards started 30th.... he's on the move.... into the top 15.
ReplyDeleteWish we'd hear more about those further back.
Thanks for the 99 report.
ReplyDeleteHe's fast tonight !!
After watching 3 hours of Indy...it sure seems like lots of TV spots so far in this broadcast!
ReplyDeleteBoring race? There are already more lead changes. We aren't even close to halfway. Can;t judge a race yet.

Where did you get boring from?
From Kyle At 6:35

He has to be being sarcastic since this is a NASCAR thread.

lap 132 of 400 is the Winner
We miss Biffle almost losing it?
ReplyDeleteGood explanation of the problem with the DEJr pit stop.
ReplyDeletewow .... Mark Martin is NEXT to be lapped.
ReplyDeletewhew...not even halfway.
ReplyDeleteJD said ...
ReplyDeletewhew...not even halfway.
Last night's race was 10 times more exciting. The Indy 500 was way, way more exciting. They need to do something to this car.
2nd place car tags the wall and the BEST shot for replay is from the BLIMP ????
ReplyDeletecome on FOX !!
Wow, kind of like the old days in NASCAR... how long before most of the field is down three laps?
ReplyDelete(just joking... I hope)
Mark Martin will get the FREE PASS.
ReplyDeleteBut DW says he has a broken header...
report from the 8 pit would be nice to explain that issue.
Whoa! That was scary with Brian's tire! I hope no one was hit!
ReplyDeleteHow long till we see that tire on Ebay?
ReplyDeleteWow poor BV he was having a great run.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I think the race is exciting. This isnt a Talladega or Daytona.
ReplyDeleteReal nice, fox. A tire goes flying into a camper and it takes five minutes to comment about whether anyone is hurt.
ReplyDeleteCan the fan keep the tire? I would think the team would want to look at it to help figure out what happened
ReplyDeleteNice to see the FOX people using the "2 box" / split screen a little more under green flag and it paid off for the Vickers crash.
ReplyDeleteThanks FOX.... good job
Ritchie. FOX doesnt have people in the infield. They don't know until they get word from the Speedway is anyone is injured.
ReplyDeleteAhhh! They are driving the tire back!
ReplyDelete@anon 7:50--what are you "huh?"ing?
ReplyDeleteNRF--looks like the security took the tire, but I do hope they get to keep it as well.
nrf,
ReplyDeleteYou can bet they will get something from the team, but the tire is going to go back and be checked out to see what went wrong.
If I was Vicker's team PR rep I would be putting together a goody bag right now.
At some tracks, such as Michigan - the infield fans are protected by a "real" catch fence that stands 15 feet tall and is built with heavy duty fencing and cables.
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone is OK !!
anon- my point was that they could have at least acted concerned. Which they didn't for quite a while.
ReplyDeleteGymmie - I agree, if a tire comes crashing into your camper, you should get to keep it. Plus an autograph to boot.
I'm still miffed at DW's comment about Mark Martin having, what he called, "a broken header".
ReplyDelete#8 is now running in the top 15.
Was the broken header TRUE ??
He's runnin pretty good IF that header is broken.

Thing that concerns me is DW's comment about carbon monoxide getting to Mark and how he couldn't drive with that happening.
I just realized that Wind Tunnel will be coming on SPEED soon. Dave Despain will get a "non NASCAR" night.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he and a lot of racing elitists happy about that.
Karen -
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. DW commented that Mark would not be able to deal with the carbon monoxide from that broken header.
Maybe with the current helmet / breathing system they use these days, it might not be a big issue.
But it doesnt look like we're going to get any kind of update/ mention or report on the Mark Martin issue.
Vickers said they were putting together stuff for the people who had the tire land in their laps.
ReplyDeleteAs corny as FOX's coverage is sometimes, I'm a bit surprised they didnt take a camera to the infield to interview the Tent Camper people that got hit by the Vickers tire.
ReplyDelete@ritchie--Yes, it's rare he doesn't have NA$CAR overload...even when the boyz are "off" it still seems to dominate.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! look at the large crowd!
ReplyDeleteWow, Junior looks fast. This might be the night he pulls out a win. I hope it comes down to him and Kyle.
ReplyDeleteLarry Mac is stepping over DW's comments a lot tonight, although he's usually right. Enjoying the race broadcast. Being an employee of CAT I'm hoping for a Dave Blaney win.
ReplyDeleteWow did Darrell Jinx Junior or what!
ReplyDeleteCorrection, Junior was fast...
ReplyDeleteGeez, just when The Anti-Christ was having electrical problems, Junior hits the wall to put the squadoosh on the win.
ReplyDeleteWhat's this? 75 in a row? And they still act like he's the only car on the track?
ReplyDeleteSCREW JUNIOR. GIVE SOMEONE ELSE THE COVERAGE THEY DESERVE.
I'm so freaking sick of a guy who never wins hijacking the broadcasts.
How could JJ Yeley not see Junior in the wall? Somebody needs to give him a clear visor.
ReplyDeleteWho was that we heard yelling in the background when Junior crashed? It wasnt Darrell. Sounded like someone without a mic.
ReplyDeleteI did think its a matter of Yeley couldnt see, but he had a car directly below him.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Mike Joy is eating and talking at the same time.
ReplyDelete"Sometimes we stretch that just a tad." What did DW mean?
ReplyDeleteThat "restart" camera that is located on pit road is a TERRIBLE choice for restarts.
ReplyDeleteWe need to see the entire field when they are coming for the green flag.
You know those TV guys have to be tired.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Mike Joy is eating and talking at the same time.
ReplyDeleteSounded like that to me too
"he's not dog meat"? "dog meat"? man, there's a real southern expression for you.
ReplyDeleteand now dw admits that he's a kyle busch fan. uhhh, i think we all knew that already, dw.
I think DW got it wrong. Didn't Erik Darnell win the Gong Show the year David Ragan was a contestant? Danny O'Quinn was in the same group.
ReplyDeleteTracy, I can barely remember, but didn't they have more than one Gong Show?
ReplyDeleteThese FOX producers must take naps during the race.
ReplyDeleteOn this day when we honor those men and women who serve our country...there hasnt been ANYTHING said about the ARMY car and Mark Martin.
I know i've commented a few times about the #8 car tonight, and NOW Martin is running in the 8th spot.
LAZY PRODUCING !!
Something tells me that the only people who find "Digger" humorous are the guys in the booth.
ReplyDeleteI would like to hear from Yeley if he is out of the race. How did he not avoid Jr?
ReplyDeleteWow, Sam Hornish is in the top ten.
ReplyDeleteMan that's one butt-ugly car Jr has on the right side
ReplyDeleteRitchie, Todd Kleuver won the year before on the Gong show.
ReplyDeleteI remember thinking, when I heard Danny O'Quinn was getting a Roush Busch ride, and that David Ragan was going to get the 6 car, that it didn't do Erik Darnell much good to win the Gong Show.
interesting: "nascar. how bad have you got it?" commercial just now . . . in spanish.
ReplyDeleteanother thing in a series that makes you go "hmmm."
Well....there is something new.
ReplyDeleteWow way to listen to the audio before air Fox.... Chad Kanus just said the F word on live national TV through no fault of his own.
ReplyDelete"Go ahead and bring it in before you F... up everyone else's night"
That is a major major screw up by the production team.
kyle-
ReplyDeleteThought I was hearing things. Glad to know I'm ok.
hey kyle. i thought i heard that but then again, i was watching his lips at the same time. still -- curious.
ReplyDeleteBTW Kenseth is running the fastest times right now, might want to keep an eye on him.
ReplyDeleteGreen Flag stops NEED split screen.
ReplyDeleteWhat was with the Brady bunch restart cam????????????
ReplyDeleteI missed the F bomb. was feeding the cats and checking my tape on WT in my room...then I missed JJ talking about his car blew up.
If you know who wins AGAIN I am sticking with the IRL the rest of the season.
Love that Bud ad with the troops in the airport terminal.
ReplyDeleteWOW...would love a certain long shot to WIN.
ReplyDelete:)
never mind...not gonna happen...sheesh
ReplyDeleteWhy wasn't there a wide show to see Tony hit the wall??
ReplyDeleteGood Lord is the director asleep?
ReplyDeleteReally tired of DW identifying with Busch . . . does everyone remember what a pain in the a** DW was back in the 80's when he drove the Tide car? Whoopee . . . DW is reliving his past in a present driver. Go back to Franklin, TN DW and sell your Hondas . . .
ReplyDeleteYAY!!
ReplyDeleteKasey won...but no drop down of winners..still good to see the cars crossing the line.
YAY! KASEY...the ALL STAR boosted his confidence.
Heck of a final 10 laps, shame we didn't get to see half of it.
ReplyDeleteTired Kasey lookin for the checkered flag.
ReplyDelete:)
showing the field crossing the finish line was great! good going Kasey!
ReplyDeleteWow what a fantastic finish, wish the "director" would have let us see it at home.
ReplyDeleteWith the tracker so screwed up who knows who finished where. At least with a decent wide shot we would have been able to guess.
I can't believe how much we missed on the final laps???
ReplyDeleteWE DON"T NEED BUMPER/CAR CAMS or TIGHT SHOTS.
It's wide shots...Crimeny.
They have plenty of time so hopefully we'll get lots of post race including top 35.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot going on during the last ten laps. I think fox did a good job keeping everything straight during that span.
ReplyDeleteGood job by the director on the finish. All the action was hard to cover but it was done well.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial break immediatley after the checkered flag should be pushed back AFTER pit road / victory lane.
ReplyDeleteBy running this LONG commercial break the network loses ALL of the RAW emotion following a race.
This should really be given some thought. Making the winning driver sit in the car for 3-5 minutes WAITING FOR TV is just wrong.
Kyle
ReplyDeleteAMEN about the wide shot.
I am so SICK of no WIDE SHOTS on longer tracks???? We miss so much...and I don't mean the GOOGLE EARTH SHOTS either...USELESS.
It's basic car race production 101 ain't it? Show about 8-10 cars in a shot..there was NO REASON to miss Stewart hitting the wall.
And DON"T GET ME STARTED on lap 61 restart with that quad BRADY BUNCH CAM GARBAGE.
Nice to see KK smile.
Ken Mich great point about commercials
ReplyDeleteWhat the He LL was with that ending? Why no showing the rundown of the final results? Why no showing of the cars at the finish line? What do we have to say to Fox to get them to understand? We don't need to see Kasey taking off his helmet. We don't need to see the pit crew celebrating (we see enough of that in other shows and any post race show). And, while I'm hacked off, what's with those insipid "Sprint Girls" who have to stick their faces in every shot with the winner at every race?
ReplyDeleteWOW...Jr is such a trooper!!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't someone open Kasey's beer for him before handing it to him?
ReplyDeleteHe won the race for crying out loud.
During the last four laps Dale Junior had what looked like black tape (but more solid)waving from the right back bumper. So the director cuts away from that shot? Nobody in the booth says a word?
ReplyDeleteDarbar
ReplyDeleteAmen to your rant. I just got back online and am all fired up.
Only one more week of FOX thank goodness.
I will miss Larry Mac and Mike Joy but not the shoddy cam work on the final few laps (Director had to be eating some Cheetos or something to miss Stewarts late crash)
Remind me when TNT is here what I said about Fox.
I have a swiss cheese brain about racing broadcasts.
:-)
Thank you Fox for remembering the top 35 this week. I'll have to replay the finish to figure out what they actually showed us.
ReplyDeletesophiaz123, remind me how bad TNT is again when I start complaining about ESPN after 8 more races :)
ReplyDeleteSophia, I think it's going to get worse with TNT. Believe it or not, we may be wishing for FOX in the next few weeks. I remember how terrible TNT was with last year's coverage. Yuck. But these directors and production heads just never listen or learn.
ReplyDeleteCure for TNT? HotPass!
ReplyDeleteI am convinced that the replacement for Bill Weber should be Sophia.
ReplyDeleteThis was a good broadcast. To those who say we didnt see the finish. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!! we saw the finish. Also, WE DID SEE A FINAL RUNDOWN OF POINTS AND FINISHING ORDER!!! what broadcast were you watching!!
ReplyDeletealso, I dont know about sophia as a replacement...she might just complain to the director the whole race..... :P
"(Director had to be eating some Cheetos or something to miss Stewarts late crash)"
ReplyDeleteSophia the director did everything possible. You dont know what happened in the truck. You have no right to say those things. They were rolling video at the time which meant the director need to find a camera with the wreak and the bring the show out of video. that takes a few seconds and by then the crash was over. That was good directing under the circumstances.
I really like Kasey Kahne, but he really doesn't show much emotion. I wonder if he can ever be a true NASCAR superstar (which NASCAR would like him to be ) because it's so hard for him to show emotion. Whenever a driver comes over to him while he's being interviewed and tries to joke around, like Sadler did tonight in Victory Lane, he acts very, very, awkward instead of laughing and getting in on the joke. He was kind of acting like "What are you doing here?" to Sadler. It makes the whole thing awkward. Just like when he's on Trackside - painful. It's OK to laugh sometimes, Kasey!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he won though. Good to see the naysayers who said he didn't deserve to be in the race last week have to eat their words.
Anon, Don't be so sensitive about the Cheetos comment. LIGHTEN UP..it's been a long day of racing for some of us traveling the world from our homes. :)
ReplyDeleteActually I have a great, quick sense of humor in my live face to face human life but it transfers not to a message board..gotta see the tongue in cheek, gleam in eye...or sometimes, foot in mouth!!...comedy is about timing and vocal inflection.
Kyle I hear you about TNT as well.
I had to go get some gatorade to drink and ended up doing a quick vacuum in the LR.
I could watch the monitor and be better than Bill "Mr. Drama death march to the winner"..the way he brings up the plane crash everytime Jimmie Johnson wins.
And I am nice to handicapped people when nobody is looking and do not make fun of them.
I also do not have a hick accent and speak with decent grammar.
Better than I type.
I got a kick out of reading the comments but knew I would suffer racing intoxication with tv overload.
Good grief I just remembered...VL at 11pm for those with SPEED.
I did miss Race Day but did not tape it as I would be up all night taping and watching stuff.
My room mate is still looking for the F1 Bob Varsha rant where Varsha yelled about the in car cam. Anybody know what lap that was on? LOL
Anon, some reporter in a chat recently said Kasey Kahne was one the worst interviews in NASCAR. The question was the drivers the reporter least liked to interview. He did say he was a very nice person and very likeable, but that Kasey isn't much on talking or saying anything interesting in interviews other than reciting his sponsors. He said you know what he's going to say before he says it.
ReplyDeleteI think KK is just not comfortable with the PR stuff which is ok....not all can be polished and easy in front of the camera...it would be nice if he could relax but maybe he does not like cameras and mics in his face.
ReplyDeleteHe seems like a sweet young man from what I have seen but, I know what you mean about him not being comfortable.
It's why many drivers stay in regional or lower series (Trucks) so they don't have to come off as polished speech makers or at least, at ease in front of the tvland people.
Dang didn't know we "Don't have the right" to complain about tv coverage. Just little old peon consumers who determine ratings that in turn determine advertising rates that in turn pay the salaries of people who work in tv.
ReplyDeleteWow.
Bevo
ReplyDeleteI also coulda sworn this was a blog to write our comments/opinions about racing coverage?
Didn't yew?
Guess weez the dumb ones.
;-)
By the way JD.
thanks for a FANTASTIC DOUBLE DIP for the blog!! I totally enjoyed the Indy Race!! and chatting here off and on all day.
I know it was extra work for you but I and others appreciated it!
Major thank you to the production truck for not ignoring everyone but the winner on the last lap. This situation was a combination of Phoenix, where Johnson had a huge lead in a fuel mileage race, and Martinsville where cars were running out of gas and racing for position all over the place on the final lap. On both of those prior races we saw the winner and the winner alone and never saw anyone else running out of gas or racing for positions to the line during the live broadcast. On this day however they showed the extra commitment to showing Carl run out of gas and catching the rest of the pack crossing the line, so I'm very thankful for the change.
ReplyDeleteThey gave us a couple second tease that they were gonna show the 18-16 battle for 2nd split-screened with Kahne taking the checkered flag before switching to an all winner and flagman zoom shot so that was a slight bummer but like I said I'm still thankful that we got what we got.
I could nitpick minor things to death but there were no major glaring issues in my mind. I haven't read any other comments yet but if anyone happened to bring up this issue, I'm not angry about Fox missing Stewart blowing a tire live. These races aren't scripted so it's impossible for the director to have supernatural powers and know where to have the live shot focused so everything is caught live. This was hardly Talladega last fall when ESPN inexplicably missed a last lap lead change.
I'm glad to know that our input matters and that changes in philosophy have been made. Thanks Fox for a very enjoyable 5 1/2 hours of coverage! I've been among the harshest critics of you guys when I felt mistakes were being made but I do like to think I'm the first one to jump in line and praise you all when things go well.
Somewhere I hope TNT is still filling up their notebook of 10 months worth of NASCAR race broadcast notes and Daly Planet comments....
Thanks to those of you who dropped by for the Coke 600 and also to those who have been here for the Indy to Charlotte doubleheader.
ReplyDeleteThis was another first for this site with more to come. Without your help, we could not have come this far in such a relatively short time.
Have a great Memorial Day.
JD
Jenna Fryer is at it again:
ReplyDelete"CONCORD, N.C. -- Tony Stewart suffered his second heartbreaking defeat of the season Sunday night when a flat tire late in the Coca-Cola 600 handed Kasey Kahne the victory in NASCAR's longest race of the year."
She then goes on to write six more paragraphs about Stewart and Zippadelli before mentioning the race winner again.
If she can't write, then maybe she needs to go TV full time - and hire someone to do the writing for her, since many of the TV folks do their own writing.
Anon
ReplyDeleteI don't read much of Jenna's stuff. What is your point about her column?
I read it and it sounds like she made Tony look really angry he wrecked late (understandable) as he kicked cabinets inside a trailer.
Then she went on about many drivers and mentioned Kahnes win.
Is it that she mentioned KK so little? I found the column and read it in it's context and am just trying to figure out your "she's at it again" comment.
Again, I don't know much about her except she seems to be a polarizing writer.
Yes, it's the second week in the row where she has downgraded Kahne's win. Last week her original article which came out Saturday night was so one-sided (saying Kahne shouldn't have been in the race, and he was in it because his fans think he's cute) that the next morning the top section had been rewritten. Obviously she hasn't learned.
ReplyDeleteDavid Poole also brought up Tony was leading the race, but he did it middle way through the story, and Kahne and Francis gave Stewart credit rnning a good race in Poole's story. But Poole led the story with the actual news - that Kahne won - and made it the story focus. For some reason, Fryer seems unwilling to do that.
She made it seem like Stewart not winning was the upset of the season or something. I wonder if she and Kasey have had a run in of some sort.
Now nascar.com, which is running her story, changed their headline to match her story. A little while ago, it said "Kasey Kahne wins two weeks in a row, ends drought." Now it says "Right place, right time: Stewart's late slip hands Kahne Coca Cola win." She made the story mostly about Stewart, not Kahne and now, so has nascar.com.
It's sad because her story is the first story used everywhere - on Nascar.com, yahoo.com, and ESPN.com until the other writers file their stories.
David Poole's story was called: "Kahne Backs Up All Star Win with Another on Sunday." which to me is a fairer headline than Fryer's.
Add to above post: not that Fryer or Poole is writing the actual story headlines, but the writers of those headlines write them based on what's at the top of the story they see. Poole's story was mainly about Kahne, so the headline reflects that. Fryer's was about Stewart first, Kahne way down several paragraphs so that's what the headlines note.

ReplyDeleteI am not quite sure where you are going with that one, but I will let it stay.
Fryer is a print reporter who writes for the AP and they sell her stories to the other media outlets.
Is this a follow-up on her Tradin' Paint show?
JD
Yes, there has been discussion here all week in two columns about Fryer's merit and positives and negatives as a reporter in anticipation of her Trading Paint appearance yesterday. Many people posted negative comments about her -her writing is what affects how people view her on Trading Paint, not just her appearances on the show. People know her from her writing. So I was just noting that she seems to be letting some bias show through again.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why some will never like her Trading Paint appearances.
I got ya, and agree that she has certainly become more of a columnist in my kind of style than a straight-up reporter for the AP.

Have you ever seen anyone as uncomfortable as Kasey while (attemtping) to open and drink a beer?
ReplyDeleteThe execs at Bud have to be frustrated that he couldn't get the can under control in victory lane.
Kahne trying to drink a beer looked like me trying to text without my reading glasses. I can get it done, but its ugly.

SOPHIA- I hope you understood my comment last night about you replacing Weber was meant as a compliment. I really enjoy your posts.
