In-Progress At Chicagoland: Final Sprint Cup Race On TNT
Here we go, it is the last TNT race for the season and several members of the TV cast will be moving on to other TV projects.
Bill Weber and Wally Dallenbach are going to continue the CORR off-road racing TV package they are working on this season for NBC Sports. Kyle Petty will continue on Tradin' Paint, the media/talk show on SPEED each racing weekend.
Lindsay Czarniak goes back to her full-time job as a local TV station sports reporter in the Washington DC area. Matt Yocum continues to be the Producer of Tony Stewart's radio show on Sirius.
Ralph Shaheen and Marty Snider are both off to do other TV things for several networks in non-NASCAR sports. Snider is going to Beijing for the Olympics on NBC and will also be a pit reporter on the CORR off-road package. Shaheen continues on the AMA Supercross Series coverage.
TNT this season has been better than 2007 and the wonderful pictures have led the way. Working with Fox Producer Barry Landis, former ESPN NASCAR Director Mike Wells has shown the power of covering the race effectively by always showing groups of cars on the track. His persistence in helping TV viewers keep the same perspective as the fans at the track has not gone unnoticed.
This broader scope has allowed Landis and the announcers in the booth to always have a feel for the racing action. Wells is not shy in moving back into the field if that is where the racing is going on. The same could not be said for Fox, which has a philosophy of focusing on the leaders and the high-profile drivers.
The "wide open" TNT coverage at Daytona showed viewers that races could be run with limited full-screen commercials and showed advertisers that fans will stay during a commercial break if the race can still be seen. Hopefully, that message got through.
The star of TNT this season has been Kyle Petty. Everyone else has just become his supporting cast. In much the same way that Dale Jarrett can dominate a telecast on ESPN, Petty is the centerpiece of TNT and the person around whom all conversation revolves. It has truly been his breakout year as a TV analyst.
In this final race, it should be interesting to see if the Sprint Cup cars follow the example of the Nationwide Series and spread-out to race the track. Long green flag runs put the pressure on the pit crews and ultimately the crew chiefs to make the right calls in the pits. It also puts the pit reporters on the spot.
The lights at Chicago are great for TV and hopefully that will allow Wells and his veteran crew to make outstanding pictures as they deliver their final telecast of the season.

I certainly hope there is more side by side racing tonight than last night. No races are boring, but the NW race was close to it. The cars look great under the lights and the drivers seem to love the grooves in the track.
ReplyDeleteWill have RB going and this blog, plus the TV. That's it for me. Here's hoping for a fantastic night.
JD, love the blue backdrop. Thought my cpr was screwed up there for a minute.
Sorry Karen,
ReplyDeleteJust trying to give The King his due.
JD
Another night race that I will have to watch the next day.
ReplyDeleteHave a great race, everyone! I will read your comments after I watch the race in the morning.
Were they rotating the stage in the middle of the interview with Tony and Joe Gibbs?
ReplyDeleteErik,
ReplyDeleteYes. they always do that at the beginning of the on stage interview. You haven't been watching closely I take it.
The original idea was to provide a panorama during the long pre-race show, but over the season they found the outside weather did not cooperate. Lighting and wind often affected the panelists.
ReplyDeleteJD
Pink outfit is hard to take.
ReplyDeleteHeck I'd rather watch 2 hours of Buddy Baker then this pre race show!
ReplyDeleteThat was a great piece on Buddy Baker!

ReplyDeleteSorry Karen,
Just trying to give The King his due.
I'm such an egghead. Didn't put two and two together. I like it a lot though.
TNTs coverage has been good because of Kyle P. Though, I do like Wally. Bill, not so much.
ReplyDeleteJD,
I hope you honor the King for a while. I like the blue.
Thanks for the blue comments, thinking about keeping it for a while. Should be a good race.
ReplyDeleteJD
There is bad weather in area.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if its close by the track? I lost my bookmarks - so I can't find the one someone suggested last week. Weather in background on TNT looks like it might rain there. Thanks.
Yes JD please keep the blue.
ReplyDeleteHopefully like Lisa I'll get to watch the race tomorrow if Bertha doesn't knock our power out (sigh)
I am now experiencing pre-race overload!
ReplyDeleteSame show, different people.

Welcome to our world, AMS.
This is why I believe there should be 1 pre race & 1 postrace show.
I leave them on as background noise, watch what interests me & ignore the rest. Otherwise I'm sick of NASCAR before the green flag LOL
If you will allow this JD.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best weather map I have found, from the Weather Channel.
http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/?from=hp_main_maps
Try watching all four and a half hours. NASCAR Now was great this morning, Marty Smith did a great piece on the anniversary of Davey Allison passing in the copter crash at Talladega. Venturini did a great interview with Gibbs, much better than this TNT one.
ReplyDeleteJD
ams,
ReplyDeleteGoogle blog comments still do not host links. Good try though!
Did RaceBuddy launch for anyone yet?
ReplyDeleteThanks AMS
ReplyDeleteok...still at pocono??
ReplyDeleteI can't get RB to open. Anybody else?
Maybe I need the secret agent decoder ring. :)
No I still am getting commercials

I went to the website address a gracious blogger put on here first race and it is going.
Rb isn't opening for me...black blank screen seems the mood for the night but they are 5 minutes late.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about RB but Raceview doesn't want to play again either
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love the blue.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah RB is working for me.
karen can you post the link..I think it worked before here if cut and pasted.:)
ReplyDeleteRain is far to the south. If anything gets near, I'll post again.
ReplyDeleteYes, RB is working fine.. Used the link Alex gave us last month.
ReplyDeletematt,
ReplyDeleteYou have the quad split of cameras up and running right now?
Found it
ReplyDeletehttp://www.tnt.tv/sports/nascar/racebuddy08_live/
Yeah I have the quad split.
ReplyDeleteOne camera is a cool shot of people outside of the track, walking along with them. It feels like you're there.. I love it.
RB is working fine for me.
ReplyDeleteoops. add this after the raceday slash..my computer remembered when I went to type in tnt.
ReplyDeleteTHANKS TO ALEX who did this originally.
racebuddy08_live/
Yes, soph123 thats it.
ReplyDeleteTy Sophiaz
ReplyDeleteOK, thanks I got it. How about the souvenir cam?
ReplyDeleteJD one needs bread crumbs to get around some sites...glad your blog isn't like that.
ReplyDeleteYea, great camera views. EVERYBODY enjoy! Last night. A friend reminded me how much I said I dreaded TNT for 6 races...I said I cleaned the egg off my face and have loved every minute of it...especially the great production and directing of CAMERA WORK..makes it all worthwhile.
Going to be a big switch in two weeks. Just ESPN and lots of SportsCenter updates!
ReplyDeleteAnother bad anthem.
ReplyDeleteWow.....just wow on that effort.
ReplyDeleteSheesh they are mangling this anthem!
ReplyDeleteBillWebz
The "home of the brave" at the end sounded a little anti-climatic. At least he didn't have his backup singers for that part. Glad to see they fixed it though.
ReplyDeleteThe audio was really messed up there during that invocation and anthem. It sounded like the audio was coming from both the speaker/singer's mic as well as the sound system around the track on a delay.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, it sounded like Weber just got choked up there talking about Benny's birthday. RIP Benny. :(
sound was messed up on the anthem but the jets were great camera work!
ReplyDeleteI also thought it sounded like Bill got choked up mentioning Benny. :(
What's up with the DLP car?
ReplyDeleteJust got home and the anthem starts and we had to mute - well by the time hubby mutes it, it was half over AWFUL. You would think Nascar can afford something better. Missed all the pre-race stories, but have RB up and running. Let's go racin' boys.
ReplyDeleteNo no no for an in race reporter.
ReplyDeleteLeave 'em alone.
what?? removing weight?? shazaam
ReplyDeleteok..that black background with the white gray movement is STILL distracting...
ReplyDeleteseems there have been a lot of Lifelock races this season or I am getting confused...maybe NW and another series.
I wish someone would take the 18 out. It might add some drama to the race.
ReplyDeleteAnybody having trouble on RB clicking on a screen...I can view the quad but when i try to click on any box..it goes black and freezes...but the quad view is fine, thank goodness
ReplyDeleteIt looks like TNT is using the "FOX swap" effects for position changes full-time tonight. We saw it sporadically used earlier in the package, but never full-time until now.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I hated TNT at first, I will truly miss Race Buddy. They finally got it together in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYes, Sophia, this is the second LifeLock race; the last one was only four weeks ago at Michigan.
ReplyDeleteHAH Fan cage cam on race buddy while the were cleaning the lens was entertaining.
ReplyDeleteon another note...I can hear the control room on driver audio scanner!:) and somebody is cleaning a camera lens. LOVE THIS RB
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with the viagra commercials during races? First commercial break? I would understand if they're sponsoring a cup car, but it's been years since Mark Martin ran for them.
ReplyDeletealex where you been..thay always have those v commercials..ruined a perfectly good elvis song.
ReplyDeleteMan, I am really gonna miss RB on the commercials.
I second the comment TNT really got it together this year in the bigger picture...pun intended!
sophia, I've been here. In fact, i've been here too much, because that jingle makes me want to throw something at my tv every time.
ReplyDeleteAlex,
ReplyDeleteThe magic blue pill's target demographic is males 25+ Thats the largest audience in NASCAR.
I hear ya on the commercial..sigh.
ReplyDeleteOh and I second Kyle's earlier comment about a certain car.
RB to the rescue again
Wow, it's obvious already that this is going to be a commercialfest tonight.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! 16 screens! Outstanding (if you are used to multi-tasking like I am)!
ReplyDeleteJust paid attention looks like a good crowd from that angle.
ReplyDeletethats different for a pit view
ReplyDeleteA 16 car view during pitstops? Too much info.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, didn't see that coming.. that was pretty cool with so many cameras.
ReplyDeleteI liked that thing. I just would rather a few less cameras at once. But it was nice they still showed a nice shot off pit road. Is this the first time this being used this season for TNT? Are they testing ideas for next year?
ReplyDeleteI should add, that during college football and college basketball season, I often have 5 NCAA games and the Nationwide/Sprint Cup race on, so I am used to having too much information at one time.
ReplyDeleteno, not too much info. it was GREAT!! don't hate, just enjoy it. It can only help and not hurt. I think it was a great idea.
ReplyDelete16? wow. I'm working during the race, so I have to listen to the broadcast more than watch it, but that sounds good. It's enough variety that your favorite driver is probably one of those 16. Did they still show the pit road camera on the side so you can see who gets off first ?
ReplyDeleteYes, they showed the race off pit road. It was excellent.
ReplyDelete9 would have been plenty and also would have been bigger than a postage stamp. And I'm watching on a 46 inch TV.
ReplyDeleteExcellent pit road shots!
ReplyDeleteSigh..why is it the wrong driver is having an early night...
ReplyDeleteThis is turning into another groundhog day?...if this were not TNT's last night I would turn on the IRL race.
THANKFULLY it's being taped in the other room.:)
Ok, his car just flat out died?? man
Under the hood on Burton's car.
ReplyDeletehubby keeps on rewinding and rewinding I'm seeing the same thing over and over I wish I could get ahold of that remote . . . .
ReplyDeleteI wonder if TNT thought that they weren't going to pit for whatever reason.
ReplyDeleteAnd we have our green on green restart pylon, that no one can even read what it says.
ReplyDeleteWeird paint jobs tonight are messing me up. The 12 car looks like the 19's Stanley paint in the long shots. And the 99 looks like the plain white 28 from earlier in the year.
ReplyDeleterick said...
ReplyDelete9 would have been plenty and also would have been bigger than a postage stamp. And I'm watching on a 46 inch TV.
agree: the 16 was overkill for me, especially when there were three views of one car and at least two of another. plus a wide shot that showed . . . no car.
kyle said...

that freaking thing has to die a terrible death. this is not the place for a NHRA starting tower!
and i am so gonna miss racebuddy.
I like how last week they had the leader scroll and other info on the bottom of the screen, leaving the top of the screen for the widescreen HD-style picture.
ReplyDeleteEven if it's not "commercial free", I think they should permanently go to that presentation style. It makes the pictures so much better without the excess clutter.
What was that supposed to be during the Lap 35 caution? Could anybody make any sense out of SIXTEEN different pit camera windows?
ReplyDeleteRB is showing all the cars whereas the TNT broadcast is mainly just showing the top 5 cars.
ReplyDeleteso far it seems the commercial breaks haven't been overwhelming at all...very nice
ReplyDeleteI want to know who the two people are who voted for California as the best night race before the Chase.
ReplyDeleteRB should be all year long. I would pay a 50 cents a race. Audio not worth a darn with the lotto number voice and drivers way in the backround. Camera work is GREAT, though. :)
ReplyDeletewho would vote for california as best race under any circumstances?
ReplyDeleteSophiaZ123,
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a guy calling a Bingo game.
palmetto: lap 35 was a competition caution, planned ahead of time by nascar to check tire wear.
ReplyDeleteto your other point: 16 screens makes it tough to figure out who's doing what but if they choose to do that, i'd rather have seen 16 different cars, not "repeats" on a coupla of them.
Yea, Kyle, I thought some blond broad made that same comment about Bing, here before.
ReplyDeleteoops, that was me. :)
Ca before the Chase. Oy Vey.
Me, I want lights at Dega. I don't ask for much. Ha.
Nice sunlight on that shot going to commercial this time of day on the track, Photographers dream to catch moments in that magic yellow in late day or learly morn.
I DO NOT MISS THOSE DRIVER VIDEOS for bumpers. Ok, I feel better saying that.

The unseen never spotted casual race fan
When I voted, California was up to 15 votes.
ReplyDeletebe nice to see Smoke win one for the team this year.
ReplyDeletesee, that's why i like kyle petty in the booth: he sees that sparking lugnut, thinks it's a cool thing to bring us and then talks about it with enthusiasm.
ReplyDeleteSorry must have missed that one Sophia! I was multi tasking, and that usually leads to problems ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat California vote race are you guys talking about?
in-camera car on racebuddy is the #20 now.
ReplyDeleteCamera shot selections have been great tonight.
ReplyDeleteI have really enjoyed the race so far tonight. The track looks full this week or is it an illusion?
The pit camerawork is cool.
Kyle,
ReplyDeleteIt's the RB poll right now.
Love Kyle P in the booth....gonna miss these guys...sigh
ReplyDelete(sophia fondly remembering TNT in her diary later)
other, Kyle...boy i'll say.
red,
ReplyDeleteI agree. I've been watching nascar for 15 years and I think that's the first time I've heard someone talk about how a lugnut can shoot all the way down pit road. Gotta respect the pit crew guys when they have to deal with that on a semi-regular basis.
am19psu
ReplyDeleteAhhh ok! I have it moved all the way over so I can see the live leader board on nascar.com
I can kinda understand the Richmond vote, but damn BRISTOl is the only way to go.
Unlike other tracks, it appears Chicago has the stands scaled to the fanbase. Not nearly as many seats, though it looks much better when they're completely full.
ReplyDeleteGood explanation of the spin by KP. If the rumors of David Reuitimann to the #45 are true, then I hope ESPN or FOX hires KP to call races for half the season.
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL VIEW of the sunset on RB..upper left corner! WOW.
ReplyDeleteSomebody has a great eye for detail.
Alex,
ReplyDeleteIf that were to happen, who you get rid of? I'm not a DW fan, but I can't see FOX ditching him with as much as they have invested in his brand, and honestly, I think the other three guys (Larry Mac, DJ, and Petree) are all better than him.
Another amazing sunset. Wish I could make it my wallpaper, lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sunset on RB. Wow!!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the camera work on the pit stops w/race buddy
ReplyDeleteSophia,
ReplyDeleteYou could always Ctrl+Print Screen and save it if you really love it.
Amazing sky color, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHey they just said on tv the shot was a screen saver!! LOL Think TNT reads here?
ReplyDeleteyea, they were nice pics of the sunset. an added feature you get.
ReplyDeleteWow, Yellow skies on one side of the track, and purple on the other side. I'm sure there are some professional photographers at the track that can get pictures of the cars and the skies. Maybe we'll see them online in a few days.
ReplyDeleteam19psu,
ReplyDeletenot sure who I would get rid of... maybe Petree? Nothing against AP, but I'm sure a crew of Bestwick, Jarrett, and Petty would be pretty entertaining.
I voted for Richmond I always think it's a great race of course my first choice would be Texas though.
ReplyDeleteThe later sunset with the purple was great.
ReplyDelete31 and 20 close....wow. but the sky is so gorgeous...you could not PLAN a night like this for tv night viewing.
RB's been wonderful.
Oh, no...he's back!!!
great camera shots catching the wiggles as they happen !!
ReplyDeleteThe sunset sure looks nice on Race Buddy. I wish Race Buddy could be around for the rest of the season. Having 4 other camera views (for Free) is a nice addition to the race.
ReplyDeleteNO!! Not Larry over green flag
ReplyDeleteRB
what a waste of green flag??? NO SPLIT screen??
ReplyDeleteSawing a guy in half during a green flag? Funny, but coulda been done during the pre-race.
ReplyDeleteuh-oh, Marc Fein cut in half. This is crazy enough to be worth missing part of the race
ReplyDeleteLarry Mac, I love you, but I am not watching TNT for a magic show, I am watching to see the RACE!!!
ReplyDeleteyou have GOT to be kidding me: dreck under green flag racing! this is not comedy central, guys! give it a rest.
ReplyDeletei am seriously pissed off right now and it would be worse if i had to be watching larry mac embarass himself this way and i didn't have racebuddy!
Why am I watching Larry Mac do magic tricks under green???
ReplyDeleteKP just said no one in the booth cares about Larry's trick. No one at home does either.
WHAT?!? magic tricks over green flag racing!!!
ReplyDeleteKyle had it right NOBODY CARES
That is when you KNOW a race is getting boring.
ReplyDeleteLarry please don't!
ReplyDeleteRB earned it's keep right there...
ReplyDeleteIf it weren't for RB, I would have been pissed. As it was, that was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteam19
ReplyDeleteI am with you!!!
Then again, it's the last night and I bet these guys were keeping an eye on things in the truck and would've broken in if something happened......then again like you, I had on RB :)
Interesting "tech center" bits this weekend. From Brewer's colorful discription of the backend of a car, to a magic trick this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank God for RaceBuddy
ReplyDeletehaha, was that wally singing the viagra song?
ReplyDeleteLOL, think just heard Wally singing Viva, not knowing his audio feed was back live, hilarous!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteA Viagra "Movement that changed the game"
ReplyDeleteare you kidding me?
I can only think of one product to make that a bigger giggle moment.
Things always seem to go bad once a dumb stunt like that one is over.
ReplyDeleteYellow out, pit stops done. Maybe the restart will make for good racing.
JD
That was just a stupid job there; TNT should be at a higher standard than these stupid Fox gimmicks.
ReplyDeletedid they have that big old "pit out" pylon at the end of pit road before and i just never paid attention? i just don't understand why that and the green flag pylon are even necessary.
ReplyDeleteOK it looks like I haven't missed too much got home and all set up just in time to see Larry Mac sawing Marc in half. WHAT? Larry you know better than that. Oh my.
ReplyDeleteI thought Kyle was the musician..so he was singing :)
ReplyDeleteDo you guys think that RaceBuddy is something that NASCAR should think about extending to the Fox and ESPN packages?
ReplyDeleteOK, I love Larry Mac, but come on folks, under green flag racing. Things might be a little dull on the track but they are moving. And then go to commercial. TNT, you've done a pretty good job so far, don't blow it.(lol)
ReplyDeleteAnd our favorite commercial, and who did they catch singing? (probably KP)
If all that wasn't so ridiculos I'd be mad.
spring rubber said...

i agree totally. not saying it has to be intense all the time but that was just silly and unnecessary to me (altho' hearing wally -- or was it kyle? -- singing the viagra theme song was priceless!)
I laughed so hard hearing Wally singing the Viagra song.. especially because I did the same thing earlier in the race, haha.
ReplyDeletehave they said during the last few yellows who has gotten the free pass? If they did I haven't heard it.
ReplyDeleteYou can take the boy away from Fox (LM) but we see you can't take the Fox out of the boy.
ReplyDeleteSophia,
ReplyDeleteEx-lax?
JD,
I thought it was funny, but I guess looking back on it, I would never see that during a stick and ball telecast.

without question! it has erned my respect across these races and i will sorely miss it!
After starting off the final race with a bang --- Benny Parsons and Buddy Baker---
ReplyDeleteit has descended into a dud of the first water.
Larry doing magic tricks. *sigh*
JD Race Buddy is fantastic I wish it avail all the time.
ReplyDeleteYes JD, I do and then I would probably not renew Hot Pass. That is how much I am enjoying it these last 4 races I used it.

Yes YEs YES!!!
RB has been a sanity saver, during commercials and stupid people tricks
RB is great. There is no question it should be added to the FOX and ESPN telecasts next year
ReplyDeletesophiaz said:I thought it was funny, but I guess looking back on it, I would never see that during a stick and ball telecast.
ReplyDeleteexactly. we were under green, for pity's sake, and they pull out a minor league stunt like that? a stunt that has absolutely nothing to do with anything even remotely related to racing? appalling.
Vicky D said...

Yes they have been pretty good about this tonight. I can't tell you who they were due to my feeble memory except that Burton got the last one.
daly planet editor said...
ReplyDeleteDo you guys think that RaceBuddy ...?
Absolutely! But it would cut into their race view subscriptions. So think its unlikely.
am 19
ReplyDeleteYep! That's the product.
I think the video on RB has been AWESOME..scanner, not good. But the camera work tonight has been great and those sunsets DELICIOUS!! How can folks pay for animation when you can have real video. Then again, it's free and I have been impressed except I can't always open it from the nascar.com site.
Alex had to give us the Secret Agent 007 decoder ring site to find it. But it's great.
YIKES! Storm here and lights are dimming...I would hate to lose power or TNT's last night of great cams...and RB.
We have almost a full moon here in Houston (well I guess the rest of the country too), I haven't seen them show the moon yet . . .
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, for RaceBuddy on Fox and ESPN, absolutely.
ReplyDeleteRace Buddy is paid for by the sponsors, and does not affect the pay part of RaceView.
ReplyDeleteNASCAR and Turner are talking about maybe offering it to Fox and ESPN as a service of NASCAR.com so thanks for your answers.
JD

No kidding. Unbelievable.
JD
ReplyDeleteDumb quetion...would it still be FREE to us or you have to sign up for NASCAR's pay service...i have heard bad reviews of if...freezing up and not always working. I will not give $$ or personal info to that site.
i am shocked at how well RB runs (once I found it) considering how many must use it since for now, it's free. Great designer
JD who makes the money off of RaceView? Is it Turner (paying money to NASCAR of course)?
ReplyDeleteIf so then I could see it happening. What money they would loose in revenue on RV they would make up on RB ads.
Weber "Can we stay with the race please?" = priceless
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible. Sawing a man in half? Under green?
ReplyDeleteas good as they were last week, they are more bad this week.
the thing i like about racebuddy:
ReplyDelete1. it has proven reliable, week in and week out.
2. the camera shots are well done and allow me to see further back in the pack than the tv coverage
3. the commercials are generally non-intrusive
4. i love the full screen capability, especially in the "battle" screen
5. i wasn't a fan of the in-car until last week but how many times is a driver change gonna happen? i know it's the "coke zero family of drivers" but i rarely use it.
6. i enjoy watching driver intros and other pre-race activities on racebuddy.
if there's any chance it could continue on, i'd be very grateful.
I notice the pit stops under the lap 177 caution were shown with the more common 'top 3' and a pit road long shot, not that 16-window abomination they tried back on lap 35.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best parts of the TNT broadcast: The "Through the Field" Segment where they run down the Top 10 --- excellent camera work segueing between drivers and great reporting on each car in the Top 10.
ReplyDeleteOne of the worst parts of the TNT broadcast (and probably any racing broadcast of the last five years): only moments later when we have to watch Larry McReynold struggle to do a bad magic trick WHILE UNDER GREEN FLAG.
Ugh, simply awful.
Ditto to red's post on RB
ReplyDeleteAnd it cuts down on commercial break gripes due to it's reliability.
:)
Great gizmo
The Turner guys that run NASCAR.com make the sponsor money for RaceBuddy. Turner did the same type of thing for the NBA playoffs with NBA.com which they also run.
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting to see if it expands for 2009.
Why are the TNT Producer and TNT Director being named in the column? I thought names of directors and producers were off limits as they were in the FOX era just a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteAs far as tonight, it's like the booth guys know this is the last day of school, so they're acting up.
Not that anything on the track is giving them something to talk about but still...
Still an improved telecast overall this year from TNT.
JD, delete this if it isn't relevant to the discussion, but why would all of the cars be loose if the track is cooling? Doesn't that normally tighten up cars?
ReplyDeleteman, cousin carl just smoked 'em coming into the pits!
ReplyDeleteI would assume it's fair game to mention the director and other staff, since the announcing crew mentioned the director's name on-air.
ReplyDeleteand credit where it's due: great camera shots of the splitter on the 99 car! and clear explanations by the booth crew.
ReplyDeleteRed,
ReplyDeleteYour last post reminded me of something I've always wondered.... Who's cousin is Carl? I would bet he has a cousin somewhere, but how did he get the nickname?

edwards is a cousin to kenny schrader -- but i think it's a couple of "removed" sort of relationship. i don't know if schrader gave him the nickname, tho', or if someone else who knew about the relationship tagged edwards with that nickname.
Alex he's Ken Schrader's cousin
ReplyDeletewell, glad the storms went around...my 88 yr old mom called and her power went out with 100 laps to go..nasty storms.
ReplyDeleteCourse, if this book has the same old ending...might not be that big a deal...sigh
Carl is Ken Schrader's cousin.
ReplyDeleteActually, Ken Schrader is Carl's dad's cousin and Ken's wife, Anne, gave him the nickname. He mentioned that on tv today.
ReplyDeleteKen's wife Ann gave him the nik name Cousin, said Carl today...not direct cousin..more like second cousin..they discussed it just today during one of the 12 hour Pre race shows this afternoon. :-)
ReplyDeletecheck out racebuddy on #99's pit stop for the disappeared splitter! awesome!
ReplyDeleteOops Vicky D said it better than I
ReplyDeleteRed, what happened on the 99 pit stop? Can't rewind RB unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI must say if Kyle wins, I am skipping VL this week.
ReplyDeleteShow Carls splitter getting fixed there quick. I never liked that splitter from day one.
Think they will yank more engines tonight if he wins again?
Thanks everyone for the cousin Carl answers. Not sure where I've been the last few years to miss that one!

the middle brace on the splitter broke and b/c it was just scraping on the track, there is a huge hole in the center of the splitter: the middle is just gone all together. i haven't seen that since this cot was introduced. and it was a nose-on, great camera shot!
they've tried using a boatload of bondo to help with the now-missing downforce at the center of the splitter. not sure how long that's gonna last, tho'.
Thanks Sophia. My cousin's kids I call my cousins anyway although none of them are famous. This has been a pretty exciting race I think.

one can certainly hope.
No Sophia, I do not think they will. This broadcast crew are not harping about toyota having an advantage like the crew in the booth last night did. JD may be right, the owner/driver in the booth that is active sometimes comes back to haunt NASCAR TV partners.
