In-Progress At Daytona: Friday On SPEED

Here we go with the big Friday of NASCAR coverage on SPEED. This will lead-up to the Nationwide Series race on ESPN2 starting at 7PM Eastern Time with a one hour edition of NASCAR Countdown with Allen Bestwick.

Steve Byrnes will kick-off SPEED's coverage at Noon with a thirty minute edition of NASCAR Live. John Roberts and Bob Dillner will be reporting from the garage area with interviews.

The same crew will come back at 12:230PM to host Go or Go Home. This should be an interesting program with the car count situation and the weather issues the speedway has been experiencing.

After a long break, SPEED returns with Sprint Cup Series qualifying at 4PM. Steve Byrnes will head the crew in the announce booth with Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond alongside. Down on pit road and in the garage will be Lindsay Czarniak and Matt Yocum reporting.

The network finishes the NASCAR day with Trackside at 11PM. Byrnes, McReynolds, Hammond and Elliott Sadler are the regular panelists. The two featured guests are Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman. This show is scheduled at 11PM to air after the ESPN2 Nationwide Series race.

  2. Red with Nascar Live on a noon we should at least get some of it

  3. hey nrf! that's what i was thinking as well but was wondering if espn news might cover it live? (of course, now my plans for today have all shifted so it's a moot point for me right now . . .)

  4. The TV guys are scrambling to make those arrangements. I would suggest keeping an eye on both SPEED and ESPNEWS.

This is going to be a crazy Friday for all kinds of news.

Whole lot going on today I am used to multi tasking on Cup raceday, today I got both DVRs going for all the news. Hendrick is media savy to the max so I doubt the timing is accidental.

  6. NL saying they will cover the Hendrick announcement

  7. I guess the Mark Martin story is kind of a big deal, maybe not since it wasn't a surprise.

Either way, I thought the purpose of the Go or Go Home show was to actually talk about the GOGH cars. They've already wasted half the show on Hendrick stuff.

The lack of focus on the GOGH drivers has been a continuing problem on this show. Too often, it's just more RaceDay or Live with a different title.

It's a shame, because these guys deserve coverage.

  9. just an fyi: this is the second time nol has lost the press conference. error screen just indicates a general error.

  10. Another disappointing Go or Go Home show. Yeah I also found it interesting that they bailed on the press conference early to go to Go or Go Home.... and then spent the first several minutes of Go or Go Home having Bob Dillner talk about the Mark Martin announcement. If they wanted to talk about the Martin announcement I'd much rather hear the press conference and not Dillner giving his thoughts about it.

And then at one point John Roberts even said straight up "let's not talk about the pressure of qualifying and have some fun talking to Reed Sorenson about cooking hot dogs". Huh? What's the name of this show again?

Just like I said with NASCAR Now when they ignored the truck series and aired Indycar and Sportscar highlights instead, either rename the show or follow the format that the name implies. Showing non-NASCAR series highlights on a show called "NASCAR Now" is a head-scratcher, as is ignoring the go-or-go-homers not named A.J. Allmendinger and instead focusing on Mark Martin and Reed Sorenson on a show called Go-or-Go-Home.

  11. They could have started the half hour with Allmendinger and JJ Yeley, then talked to Sterling Marlin about what he's been doing in and out of racing lately, then to Terry Labonte about how he's enjoying the 45 car for 6 weeks, or talk to Carpantier about if he has another pole-winning car. They could have even talked to the 66/70 about how they're doing without a crew chief (I think they're still on 6 week suspension?).

But what do I know, I'm not a TV Producer.

  12. I wonder if the drivers were not around since GOGH was at 12:30 and qualifying isn't until 4. They obviously set it up with AJ ahead of time perhaps that didn't work or wasn't thought about for some others.

  14. The go-homers are now down to a couple of cars. If it keeps going like it has been, pretty soon everyone who shows up will get to race. After that, we'll have field fillers encouraged by NA$CAR so they won't have short fields.

  15. Anon 1:19PM,

If you would like to return and offer your opinion of those issues, I would invite you to do so.

We do not tell others what to do on this blog, we offer our views and then debate the issues.

    Thanks,

    JD

  16. @stricklinfan--but AJ has a cute puppy ;o). But yes I agree on how odd it is that they may mention a GOGHer or two but it essentially is an extended NA$CAR Live!

  17. Well Speed is back for Cup Quals. Again I'm having to use FOX trax since Speed is 3 drivers behind and out of order. Guess they learned it from ESPN last year.

  18. SPEED is behind because they're trying to show everyone's qualifying attempt. You should hear the screaming around here when they miss someone to show commercials. I'm cool with them making sure everyone gets coverage by getting out of sync with reality. I'm also keeping up with TrackPass, so I get the best of both worlds. :-)

  19. It should be a good study in contrast between SPEED time-shifting to show all cars and ESPN staying live and missing a lot.

Oh ok,thanks that I understand - I don't mind the behind part so much. The out of order is what gets me.
Since all the drivers have to make qual runs their fans should get a chance to see them.

I prefer the time-shifting style. I like to watch the drivers qualify. I'd be pretty cranky if they didn't show my driver because they needed to get in a commercial break.

SPEED is not "out of order." They run the cars in the order the cars appear on the track. But drivers frequently qualify out of their announced order.

    That got my attention, too.

If you don't want to talk about qualifying, then don't do a show about it.

Please scroll up - its not out of order qual - its time shift so all drivers get shown I'm using FoxTrax and pit command on NASCAR & Speed IS showing out of order.

At least allo the drivers are getting shown - last year espn showed out of order & skipped the "lesser" drivers and just mentioned where they qualed

  25. I like Speed doing the time-shifting.

BTW the first showing of the Prelude follows qualifying. Interesting that they're putting it up against the NW race.

  26. I agree Bevo - I got it taping so I can watch it early in morning.
Gonna watch race & trackside (maybe)

  27. On the topic of cars being out of order. If a car is not ready to qualify when it is their time then they have 5 minutes to be ready to qualify before NASCAR says no go and doesn't allow them to qualify. In this instance if the 55 wasn't ready then NASCAR allows the next car in line to qualify so people aren't sitting around doing nothing waiting on the car. So yes they were out of order but this is the way qualifying works. It is NOT speed's fault that the cars didn't go in the order on FOXtrax but it is the way qualifying is set up.

  28. Nice info however Speed was timeshifting & showing them out of order. On Fox Trax & NASCAR.com the drivers had already made their qual. prolly during commercials - rather than not show them at all ala espn they added them in later . I sat and watched it happen a few times 2 commercial break worth before I commented on it. All the drivers got shown which is cool for fans

Thanks. I am well aware of how this is done.

The cars are in the proper order. They are just delayed.

Nothing. SPEED showed the cars in the order they went onto the tarck.

  34. Wow, what a difference a couple hours and a different network make. The TNT production on Speed of Cup qualifying was a tremendous breath of fresh air after ESPN's disaster of Nationwide qualifying just hours before.

Simply put, TNT/Speed kept the focus ON THE TRACK. Like the Fox production truck before them, the TNT truck "somehow" accomplished the Herculian task of managing to produce a qualifying show without covering up the cars on the track qualifying with countless full-screen video packages, full-screen interviews, full-screen NASCAR history lessons via pictures, and multiple full-screen displays of the motorsports lineup on the network for the rest of the weekend.

On top of the Speed cameras actually staying focused ON THE TRACK, we got to see everyone's qualifying runs in their entirety with the Tivo style format. A+++ TNT/Speed.

It's quite a shame that ESPN and their "innovative" approach to deciding that on-track action should take a back-seat to fancy graphics and videos won't just leave qualifying and practice sessions to the professionals at Speed Channel. Maybe Santa Claus will bring us that gift this December so we won't have to deal with ESPN's practice/qualifying mess again in 2009.
