Sprint Cup Series From Kansas On ABC Sports
All the ingredients are in place for NASCAR this Sunday. Nice weather, good storylines and many Chasers starting from the back of the pack. The challenge for the ESPN on ABC crew is to translate that into a dynamic TV presentation.
Setting the table at 1PM Eastern Time will be Allen Bestwick and the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. Joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty, Bestwick will have plenty of good content for this hour.
Bestwick has made this pre-race show a solid program through the use of all four ESPN pit reporters and Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree upstairs in the booth. Last week, Bestwick welcomed drivers into the Infield Pit Studio and let Wallace and Daugherty interview them directly.
Wallace continues to voice his opinions on a regular basis. Love him or hate him, Wallace has added a spice to the program that it needed. Daugherty has been trying to escape his catch phrases and cheerleading, but it is a struggle. His opinions are solid when he allows himself to step outside the cheerleader role and offer his personal perspective as a fan.
During this pre-race show, watch for which pit reporters are paired with which drivers. As you may know from previous columns, pit reporters are assigned drivers in advance and stay with them all the way through the post-race show. Who has who should be interesting.
Bestwick will transition to Dr. Jerry Punch for the call of the race at 2PM. This is a great track for TV coverage with outstanding sound and pictures. Punch has the task of trying to keep viewers informed on two very distinct topics. The actual flow of the race vs. the location of The Chasers during the event.
Jarrett and Petree have not been shy about stepping-in and adding to the content of what is traditionally the play-by-play role. Both have contributed from their own driver and crew chief/owner perspectives to all of the Sprint Cup races since coverage shifted to the ESPN/ABC TV package.
Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center with his own challenge. NASCAR fans have been watching the sport since February and do not need another introduction to terms like loose and tight and lug nuts. Since ESPN put Draft Track on the shelf, Brewer is going to be on-the-spot for adding information that TV viewers can use.
Between engine woes and on-track incidents, drivers who fall out of the race will not be in the best of moods where TV interviews are concerned. The challenge for the ESPN on ABC crew is to get these interviews and when a driver turns-down an opportunity, make sure to tell the TV viewers that fact.
When the race is in-progress, look for the triple splits on the pit stops, the double video boxes during Tech Center segments and how ESPN uses the team radio chatter. Drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. were outspoken on NASCAR Now earlier in the week about ESPN's use of team radios in a sensationalized manner.
This might be exactly the race that ESPN and NASCAR ordered. Good pictures, solid racing and lots of stories to finally get the fans involved in The Chase this season.

The Goodhands move of the race is absolutely a waste of time.
I agree--if you're goin to "award" these things before you see how the race plays out, they're meaningless.
"A switcher! Hahaha."
WOW......lame.
chase contenders at this point in the race is a useless stat -- lose it. it only has validity once the checkers are thrown, period.
JD, I haven't a clue where anyone other than a Chaser is running.
"A switcher! Hahaha."
WOW......lame.
But true.
JD Just watching the telecast your kidding right
Oh DJ "sail" it must be contagious
"But true."
That it is. but it is not what I meant originally.
I don't necessarily mind the "where they stand now", but it should be something discussed closer to 50 or 25 to go since so much changes during the course of the race.
At least we have not seen Draft Tracker or Aerosmith....
I'm so annoyed I have the tv on mute listening to a lecture online..and have missed the bumper music..just checking here to see what I missed.
Not much. :(
thanks for the site

Every time I see "points now", I want to throw something at the set.
I will give the Director a $1 bill next week if he keeps from callign for the Draft Tracker.
why do they bother calling the race? stewart goes sliding through teh grass and the announcers sound like they are at a funeral. that might be the least exciting wreck i have ever seen. and it was vickers and stewart who just had an incident on pit road.
man! Tony can't buy a break today :(
Mr. Vickers is asking for trouble.
If anyone can go to Larry Mac on HotPass 798 he really is pretty good @ PxP and Wendy Venturini as great in the pits , they are keeping us up on a lot. Plus seem to really enjoy it too.
83 and 20 still having problems
JD, have you worked in a TV control room?
that wasn't "bump drafting," guys: that was a deliberate "tap" to get someone out of the way.
nice lawn mowing there, tony.
"guess who? the 83 of vickers." huh?? tony moved UP on the 83, who was against the WALL, doc! c'mon. if anything, tony was giving vickers a healthy tap to show his "displeasure" with pit road etiquette not being observed.
What was Tony thinking? It looked intentional.
JD,
No, the entire field is just one big cluster f**k. That's why Pit Command is necessary must have.
For a gozillion years. I still have headset hair twenty years later.
SO will they tell us who pitted and who didn't?
So, what we are all saying is that we need a big field reset to get a clue about who is where and not just The Chasers. Let's see if that happens.
JD, do you mind telling us what you did in said control room? Just curious.

Ok, that's funny, jd! made me laugh right out loud 'cause it's something our daughters complain about and they only use the small headsets.

We used to call the lightweight ones with the earpiece and the clear tube "NASA headsets." but those never seemed durable enoguh to hold up to TV use. I guess we were just clumsy.

After so many years, you still HAVE hair?

Disney really needs to change the font they use in the ticker ...
Even standing in front of the tv, I can't read the names til they're almost OFF the left side ...
These booth guys are going to have it easy shortly. Almost all the chasers are up front now - well they'll still go back for KB.
Oh TRL that just wasn't kind, but it was Funny, and with the mess of this race I can use a laugh
Really need a reset.....like really.....
Disney really needs to change the font they use in the ticker ...
"Disney" doesn't make those decisions. That's ESPN.
I really hate that "IF the race ended now" stuff. Not just the chase, but any race, even the F1 crew on Speed is guilty of that.
I predict that Tony as an owner/driver will self distruct next year. He can do one or the other, but not both rolls at once.
how weird...my volume went out for a second...
oops, pushed the wrong button in the audio room going to break.
Still no field reset, I'm screaming here
Punch was talking - we lost the sound. It was the most sense he made all day!
trl,
Too funny.
...and that had that momemt of "which button was it"? panic..

hehehe
Thanks JD I wondered what the audio issue was, they are just not having a good day all around
If those there women keep crashing as a result of their Kasey stalking, how in the world do they get a "safe dirving bonus"?
There were getting ready for break and cut-off the audio for a moment before adding the bumper music...another reason I like nat sound going to break.
trl,
OMG a Chris Myers flashback. Think he is watching today?
I see the poor coverage has resulted in the return of TDP comedy tour
Lap 149 of 267 and Brad says, "we're coming up on the half way point." Is anyone paying attention to the race?
JD last off season you had some NASCAR personel answer questions .Your career in the broadcast booth maybe something you could do this year ,unless you did and I missed it .I think that would be pretty neat. Just a thought.
JD said,
"OMG"
wow...jd says OMG? I thought that was a young person thing.
JD, Myers is in the play-by-play booth for Vikings-Titans as we speak.
@jo--LOL!
And to think I've been quiet. Trying to follow the race. It really shouldn't be this difficult.
it is just me or has this broadcast just lost its way? there's no sense of cohesion or clarity, just lots of disjointed comments and discussions that aren't reflecting what's (theoretically) happening on the track.
Lap 149 of 267 and Brad says, "we're coming up on the half way point." Is anyone paying attention to the race?
Yes.
WE are.
"Your career in the broadcast booth...."
I thought JD was in the control room and not the booth. Im confused now...
Haus20 - does anyone in the booth know simple math?????
here's the reset

soooo glad you caught that as well. i'm no math whiz which is why it had me going "huh???" for a few beats after which i was thinking maybe i didn't hear it.
and to answer the question about paying attention: sure doesn't feel like it from here.
Isn't this a complete "all driver" through the field on right now? and no one noticed? I guess you didnt want it that badly.
Math is obliviots( oblivious idiots) strong suit. 149 is not half of 267.
10th through 21st?
What the heck is THAT?
Did they get bored, or what?
Anon @ 4:00 PM - I know it's not Disney per se ... But, it's still the parent company of espn ... So, technically it IS Disney making the decisions ...
Same with Time-Warner with TNT ... and News Corp with SPEED & FOX ...
I blame the parent companies for all of the problems ...
well at least ESPN realizes that there are other cars in the race besides the chasers.
oh we noticed. only by now we know what's going on because we've switched to MRN and Fox RaceTrax by now.
The "coverage" today could have been better done by kids on the "Take your Kid to work day"! espn/abc should be embarrassed, but they probably think they are doing well.
Sorry I meant Control Room
better watch out for the biff in this last 100 laps
You guys are giving this math thing too much thought. He could have thought for a second that the race was 300 laps. making lap 150, indeed, half-way. Its a common mistake. I don't always remember how many laps are in every race.
I blame the parent companies for all of the problems ...
Problem is, the parent company doesn't make production decisions like what font to use.

here's the reset
ok, but not really: cars 10 thru 20 and only coming at lap 150+. only time all day we've heard beyond the top 10 and no, i don't count "keeping track of the chasers" as a reset.
(and i have now taken the bandaid off for good and resorted to having a beer or two in the hopes that i won't notice typos -- or anything else, for that matter!)
Ugh! on "last man standing" bumper ...
They've missed some hard racing whilst away on commercial ...
I don't always remember how many laps are in every race.
But unlike you, he is getting paid a good amount of money to know how many laps are in the race he's covering.
How many more videos / pre-taped junk can ESPN possibly use under green? How about televising the race?
" The "coverage" today could have been better done by kids on the "Take your Kid to work day"!"
I think some would take offense to that.
Caution should be coming up anytime. TS & Weed last on the lead lap. Oops, TS a lap down.

yep, i do and, as noted: going 10 thru 20 is NOT a "thru the field" by my definition. sure would like to have, oh, 1-20 with a minimum of "comments" from the pit reporters. mrn manages it on a regular basis so we know it can be done.
does anyone just watch espn and not multitask during a race? just wonderin'.
"Last man standing"? The race isn't over yet!

I'm trying to keep my mind off my sore back with hot packs and cold beers. LOL
It may be a "common" mistake, but there have been way too many "common" mistakes made throughout the year and a half of ESPN's so called coverage.
" The "coverage" today could have been better done by kids on the "Take your Kid to work day"!"

I think that was the point.
I hope they think about continuing the field rundown out of this break.
3bud, maybe I will do that this wee on Tues or Weds. Not that interesting but lots of sports stuff.

You are right - I apologize to all the KIDS I may have offended!
No he is not. He is getting paid to talk about a race, not to remember a few numbers; that's the statisticians job.
Are you actually arguing that the one of the guys in the booth should not have to know how many laps are in the race they're covering?
Congrats, ESPN has a job waiting for you!
I started multi-tasking last year with TNT and haven't stopped, just added more things, now hav a minimum of 3 screens up and 4 when RB is with us
I have tried to watch espn only but the race is boring zzzzzzz
"does anyone just watch espn and not multitask during a race? just wonderin'."
I do that most of the time.
Does anyone doing computer scoring know how many cars are actually out of the race?
"Anon
You are right - I apologize to all the KIDS I may have offended!"
oh how nice of you...(light sarcasm...lol)
just scott riggs, although it shows him 32 laps down and he still might be in.
JD all 43 cars on track 66 32 laps down
nevermind riggs is still running laps
Not Multi task during a race?????
What is this you speak of? I know of no such thing! During #$%% part of "coverage" I multi task harder!
Thanks for that info. That would be another good reason to keep the rundown going. Lots of cars on the track.
Lots of untold stories today.
JD, I,ll be looking forward to it.
daly planet editor said...

riggs is 30+ laps down but i don't believe he's "officially" been declared "out" just yet.
whoops: riggs just came back and dj says no one is out of the race: all 43 on track. that may speak to the durability of this freak of nature car!
"Congrats, ESPN has a job waiting for you!"
Thanks! I accept ESPN's offer.
I always enjoy it when they open a driver's mike and then the guys in the booth completely ignore the comment he made.
Wow, Elliott Sadler in 9th...
It's just about halfway through the race, and all the cars are still out on the racetrack! LOL - making fun of BD's math.
KB is now a lap down and mathmatically out of the Chase
JD, I too will be looking forward to an insight into your career.
did we ever hear whose tire got loose on that last pit stop? saw a crewman retrieve it but couldn't tell who it was.
Anon 4:20PM,
They can only handle it when it is recorded and played back. I caught that one too, was a good one.
Just drop me an email or google "insider racing news john daly"
Not all that exciting but there ya go.
hey!!! djc's back! woo hoo!
JD,
I believe all cars on still on the track. Although Scott Riggs is 43rd and 30 laps down, they are still logging laps.

redbull car the 84 I think
After pitstops have been completed we'll be ready for a Nascar debris caution to bunch up the field again.

wonder what the new storyline will be next week without the #18 being the story?

JD, was checking in to read through the posts, and Chris Myers actually did PBP for the Vikings/Titans game on FOX today. It wasn't available in my area, so I couldn't tell you how many times he kidded because he cared.
isn't the kyle thing dependant on how he finishes. i.e. if there is a big crash!?!
It wasn't available in my area, so I couldn't tell you how many times he kidded because he cared.
I thought he saved that schtick just for us.
tough day for gibbs racing
you could be right about Kyles finish, what I passed on was from Larry Mac.
JGR is falling apart at the wrong time - Tonys day is toast!
is what brewer's saying possible: that the splitter broke on the #20 car not b/c of his ride thru the grass but b/c a crew member stood on the splitter on an earlier stop?
It is absolutely amazing to see Myers on The Tennis Channel or other Fox Sports shows.
I don't know how many of you remember him from his ESPN interview show.
He is smart and funny and well-informed on stick-and-ball sports. His Tennis Channel show is great.
Watching his do his "act" on the NASCAR on Fox broadcasts is just tough to take.
JD
Tony did this to himself. Too bad for his team.
oops, watching him...

larry "the calculator" mac? i'm going with his numbers crunching, no matter wat happens the rest of this race!
hey espn guys? anyone want to tackle the math here?
@ Jo, no Valium needed. Just tape the race and watch it again before you go to bed. I only stay awake because I'm here.
20 is 6 laps off
yup red its possible if it was cracked by the crewmans weight
bono's pretty funny: "shut up and drive! we'll fix the thing!"
anyone know how Mikey is now a lap down after these stops?
He was already in trouble after banging the wall on the lap before he pitted.
jo @ 4:36: i didn't see that happen, did anyone? just asking b/c i stepped away to get (another) beer so i figured i may have missed it.
@dot LOL I stay awake by "speaking" to the 3456 crew. I help them, I fire them - nothing works! LOL
anon 437 thanks, he seemed to be doing ok and then the bottom fell out and I didn't know why
The Truex radio call was edited for time and was WAY out of context. He had been doing more complaining than describing his problem. Bono finally had ehough.
@red
I think it happened when the crews got in way on pit stop, it has gotten worse last 45 laps or so
the romp in the grass didn't help it
Do the disney employees think that maybe some of the crew chiefs and drivers might be sabotaging the radio communications ... because they know the media is listening in ??
Dj's going off on Bono awfully hard, considering he has no idea how much whining Turex might have been doing BEFORE he started listening!
how did the #17 get back to 9th? i'm so confused . . .
Do the disney employees think that maybe some of the crew chiefs and drivers might be sabotaging the radio communications ... because they know the media is listening in ??
What's this fascination with referring to Disney in regards to this race? We all know Disney owns ABC, so you're not telling us something secret or anything.
MRN says all 43 starters are still running ...
Has espn told us that??
anon 4:41, i think maybe if there are problems you always look to the top and Disney is it
It sure has been interesting to see how ESPN has made an issue out of selected team radio conversations.
Sometimes, it seems to have no real purpose.
anon 4:39: yep, just like a fan, doncha' think? espn only played what they felt was able to fit into their time allotment there and so bono sounds like an idiot.
but it's nice to hear dj's take on it -- and did anyone catch dr punch say "ice cubes for mr jarrett"? see, there's the problem doc: we don't want dj to "cool down."
yup, DJ mentioned it right after I asked.
Junior's using lots of bad words on the radio. Gee, maybe ESPN will report that again this week.

LOL maybe all RH "counseling" has come undone & he is back to Jr.
Will someone ask Shannon what a "lubber" is ??
lubber wow I thought Mikey could make up words!

Does anyone who is just watching the ESPN on ABC telecast know who is where?
September 28, 2008 3:46 PM
Nope! The only think I can tell you is they are in Kansas. It's Carl's home track since he lives about 125 miles away and it is Clint's home track because he is from Emporia, KS. I know this because that is about the only thing ESPN has talked about.
@jo: i surely hope so! a calm dale is not an "up on the wheel, racing mad" dale. i'm just surprised to hear it took him this long into the race b/c i understand he "prepared" tony jr for it earlier -- over a sway bar issue.
and so now we're going to come bcak with a tick over 40 laps to go: think a 1-20 thru the field is in order?
I wonder if JGR will put Toast into the 20 if Tony becomes mathamatically ineligable to win the championship, perhaps that's the plan. Then TOny can start driving the 66 or 70
So, this should be the stretch run where the real action happens.
red - loose wheel belonged to the troublemaker ... err, Vickers ...
I gotta get my dad to pick me up one of those fancy Camping World CTS diecasts tomorrow when he stops at Camping World ...
I still wonder "where" Camping World (aka Affinity Group) "found" all of this money to be doing all of the sponsorship gigs they've picked up in the last couple of years ...
More Truex/Bono:
MT: Sorry about spouting off. If I'm mad, you should be too.
Bono: I'm mad too. I went to the porta John for a drink. Stained my teeth and I don't feel better.
I nearly fell off the sofa!
Now a "Where the Chasers Will Restart Graphic"? ESPN is clearly getting across their message that only 12 drivers matter to them. What a colossal disappointment after so much promise at Dover and in the last two Nationwide races.

Thru the field? omg we are such optimists! We can only dream
great save by Hornish
one thing that's great about this espn broadcast. it's 5-6 seconds faster than MRN, so when there is a wreck and the dull tones of punch if/when he talks don't do the race justice, MRN comes through with an exciting call that can get you right back into the excitement of the race.
No, talking about the real action on the track.

@JD--I wasn't fond of Chris Meyers at first...but then I saw him in his other elements and started liking him better. I don't get the Tennis Channel so I haven't seen any of those shows. I loved the Sears Point 2K3 race where Happy & Jr. went into the Hotel and made fun of Meyers & Hammond! Too funny!

If there is any real action we will never know unless-
- it involves a top4 in the chase
or
- it involves a fave of the crew
& we are not in commercial or green flag graphics coverage
re: Chris Myers. I do get tennis channel. Same face, different personality.
It took a VERY long time for them to notice had Truex had a problem.
He went backwards really fast on the restart, but apparently they weren't looking. As usual.
no more talking heads during green flag racing!
OK why more pretaped junk during GREEN FLAG racing its the last 35 laps!!!! Show the RACE on the track!!
The broadcast crew stopped looking out the window so they missed Truex's problem right away.
I just turned on the tv for the last 30 laps and am paying attention..judging by Strickfan and other comments, I have missed NOTHING.
I know it's a moot point but I HATE the splitter and the wing on the COT. SPlitter has ruined a few races..as has the massive wing blind spot.
Shees
Jerry just aks questions and makes comments when he should be calling the action.
Something happened to Martin Truex (non-Chaser) on the restart. Andy even chimed in for a moment that there was a problem with the 1 car.... but the production truck never broke stride and stuck with the "Full Throttle" grabage for an extra lap before finally giving a very brief report on Truex. More pre-taped junk now under green. WOW.
is 30 laps remaining in the race the time to discuss what can be done to make the cot more competitive NEXT YEAR!?!
i despair . . .
it's the last 30 laps and we're talking about how to change the car for 2009... What.... How about resetting the field so we know who has a chance to advance or something
"before I retire I'm going to put paul into the wall". That's a long time to sit on a grudge there junior....
>30 laps is not the time to talk about next year! ITS commercial TIME!!! wth?!?
Anonymous said...

No, they were looking, but they had there own "agenda."
And now we are at commercial, your're kidding right.
In the heyday of NBC coverage, they weren't afraid to throw out anything, even commercials, to get to the action on the track.
Contrast that with today's coverage, where "full throttle" scanners playing are more important than showing a car that contended for the lead braking a shifter.
watching the network feed in the upper right corner of Hotpass and see more pretaped bs during the last green flag laps. They just are so hung up on pre-scripted show instead of the show on the track.
Why cant we get at home what the fans at the track get....just racin'
Truex was laying way back on the restart ... and the car behind him, was laying back on him ...
I guess they forgot Truex had problems on the previous restart ...
They should've aimed the cameras on the 6 and 83 all day as that's where most of the action has been ...
Next week is going to be a disaster ... They better find some more cameras ... and better people (like cannibalize the IRL peeps)

Jr is patient - LOL & when it happens he'll deny it was on purpose. Gotta love Jr.
I've lost audio at least twice anyone else having problems?
nice touch to interview Truex.
Dang, I thought we were going to get through the whole race without
"driving his guts out."
*sigh*
