Sprint Cup Series From Kansas On ABC Sports
All the ingredients are in place for NASCAR this Sunday. Nice weather, good storylines and many Chasers starting from the back of the pack. The challenge for the ESPN on ABC crew is to translate that into a dynamic TV presentation.
Setting the table at 1PM Eastern Time will be Allen Bestwick and the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. Joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty, Bestwick will have plenty of good content for this hour.
Bestwick has made this pre-race show a solid program through the use of all four ESPN pit reporters and Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree upstairs in the booth. Last week, Bestwick welcomed drivers into the Infield Pit Studio and let Wallace and Daugherty interview them directly.
Wallace continues to voice his opinions on a regular basis. Love him or hate him, Wallace has added a spice to the program that it needed. Daugherty has been trying to escape his catch phrases and cheerleading, but it is a struggle. His opinions are solid when he allows himself to step outside the cheerleader role and offer his personal perspective as a fan.
During this pre-race show, watch for which pit reporters are paired with which drivers. As you may know from previous columns, pit reporters are assigned drivers in advance and stay with them all the way through the post-race show. Who has who should be interesting.
Bestwick will transition to Dr. Jerry Punch for the call of the race at 2PM. This is a great track for TV coverage with outstanding sound and pictures. Punch has the task of trying to keep viewers informed on two very distinct topics. The actual flow of the race vs. the location of The Chasers during the event.
Jarrett and Petree have not been shy about stepping-in and adding to the content of what is traditionally the play-by-play role. Both have contributed from their own driver and crew chief/owner perspectives to all of the Sprint Cup races since coverage shifted to the ESPN/ABC TV package.
Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center with his own challenge. NASCAR fans have been watching the sport since February and do not need another introduction to terms like loose and tight and lug nuts. Since ESPN put Draft Track on the shelf, Brewer is going to be on-the-spot for adding information that TV viewers can use.
Between engine woes and on-track incidents, drivers who fall out of the race will not be in the best of moods where TV interviews are concerned. The challenge for the ESPN on ABC crew is to get these interviews and when a driver turns-down an opportunity, make sure to tell the TV viewers that fact.
When the race is in-progress, look for the triple splits on the pit stops, the double video boxes during Tech Center segments and how ESPN uses the team radio chatter. Drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. were outspoken on NASCAR Now earlier in the week about ESPN's use of team radios in a sensationalized manner.
This might be exactly the race that ESPN and NASCAR ordered. Good pictures, solid racing and lots of stories to finally get the fans involved in The Chase this season.

Who is Tony Ruzutti? That is a new one on me.
ReplyDeleteTony Rizutti is a co-host of Dale Earnhardt Jr's XM Radio show. Beyond that, I don't know much about him.
ReplyDeleteSorry, bad fingers :)
ReplyDeleteHe's done a few HP races this year, good insight.
ReplyDeleteTrying to do this on a BlackBerry right now
MRN reporting J Gordon is sick, Brad K on standby
ReplyDeleteTony Rizutti is also a co-host of Michael Waltrip Outloud on XM Radio. He has done PR stuff as well as some media. You check him out at www.tonyrizutti.com. His bio is there.
ReplyDeleteDoes that help, JD?
For those of you wanting "Stick with the Biff" t shirts seen on "Raceday" they are available at 3mracing.com or gregbiffle.com.
ReplyDeletedid anybody watch this lifelock show? i didn't know it was on. was it good?
ReplyDelete6:00PM: ESPNEWS - Interviews with top three drivers, winning crew chief and owner. From the Infield Media Center in Kansas once the race is over.
ReplyDeleteI wish. This description isn't accurate, hasn't been accurate for quite some time, and I don't think your readers should be directed to something each week that isn't being shown.
We haven't gotten an explanation about why it isn't being shown, either.
im seeing puerto rican parade on wpvi 6 abc out of philly. no race :(
ReplyDeleteWhy is it, 12 minutes into the "countdown", they have to have the pit reporters waste 5 minutes doing promos about what they are going to be talking about later?
ReplyDeleteBill H
Roush was a good get though huh!
ReplyDeleteAnd also on these pit reporters. There is no "noise" on the tracks, can't they take off the big head phones while talking so they don't look like idiots. Jamie Little talking to Greg Biffle was a good example.
ReplyDeleteBill H
Yes I know the producer tells them what to say in the head phones, but were smaller ones when there is no reason for the noise cancellation.
Sound is awful from Brewer today, not that I listen mind you, but sounds like a bad mic or something.
ReplyDeleteBill H
I wan't my 'Stick with the Biff' tee shirt! Not at GregBiffle.com or 3mraging.com as of now, so don't know where the anon got the info.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking Tony Rizutti is Phil Riszzuto from the money store.
Bill H - yes I thought that was strange doing promos of upcoming spots. Jack's interview was great though but why isn't anyone saying what the pressure was in JPM's shocks? If they have I haven't heard it and poor TB stumbled over quite a few words and it's just the beginning of the day.
ReplyDeleteI don't care how many times I see that Tylenol commercial with Kevin; I bust out laughing when he says 'how bout tryin a new girlfriend?' SO Kevin Harvick
ReplyDelete@ri88girl,
ReplyDeleteI thought that too. Thanks to the others for clearing that up.

watch it show up on SPEED, just like Digger on FOX
And thanks to Jack for mentioning Paul Newman and his fondness for racing. Allen was just talking about the casino addition that has been approved for the racetrack but it was just announced that Hard Rock Casino has filed for bankruptcy that would be interesting to delve into that story. They are replaying stories too that were run earlier in the day.

ReplyDeleteWhat's the Money Store? Phil Rizzuto played for the Yankees
ReplyDeleteYes, Phil Rizzuto is a Hall Of Famer retired Yankees baseball player. I remember my grandfather talking about him!
ReplyDeleteWpvi in philly is not showing nascar countdown they have a parade on.
ReplyDeletelacboi - are the mummers strutting their stuff? I don't like DJ's purple tie with the brown suit either.

ReplyDeleteThanks JD, that ANON was a little too sensitive to Bill's legitimate opinion.
ReplyDeleteYou can always tell when the season is winding down, tempers get tight all over the place.
ReplyDeleteSo far, Rusty and Brad are having a very good time in the pre-race as is Allen.
Seems like even the drivers are kind of burned-out. Kyle Busch was a tad less than enthusiastic.

Well, we get a lot of TV guys on this page, so when you are offering an opinion on the TV stuff, just make it an opinion and everything will be just fine!
ReplyDeletelacboi,

JD
anon 1:00PM,
ReplyDeleteI am purposefully leaving that up and promoting it to let ESPNEWS know that we are watching.
I have been trading emails with that bunch and they are in the same situation as the other ESPN networks...too much stuff for one channel.
I want to make sure that they know at 6PM there will be a NASCAR group turning to them for the live coverage they have been giving us all season long. Thanks for the comment.
JD
@ Daly Planet Editor
ReplyDeleteSwitched to race coverage @ 2pm
Thanks for dropping me the note, that would bave been big if they did not.
ReplyDeleteJD
JD, thanks for the deletion. Yes, as someone has said - the drivers seem tired or like poor Jeff Gordon, under the weather too. Anthem is too slow.
ReplyDeleteWell today should be interesting - hope its better than yesterday. Bad coverage usually gets us good coverage next time I hope the patten holds true. Who dresses the announcers? DJ 's tie w/brown suit?
ReplyDeleteDamn that's how you say the command haha.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the pre-race.. Allen makes the hour go by fast.
I am the anon who posted the stick with the biff info - that was what the graphic on Raceday said. I am sure by mid week they will be for sale.
ReplyDeleteLike I said in the column, this will be a great race to get things back on track and build momentum for Talladega.
ReplyDeleteAnon 2:11PM,
ReplyDeleteNo problem. I have an email into the RaceDay folks. When they tell me, I will post it.
JD
Just able to tune in between Computer issues (don't download Vista service pack1 if you want your McAfee to still work) and the Parade I'm having a great day so far. Hopefully it's all up from here
ReplyDeleteBevo, thanks for the heads up on announcers on Hotpass. I guess I get to listen to LarryMac today. Also I second the vote for the command. Clearly one of the top ten ever !!
ReplyDeleteI loved Shannon's decision to point out that non-Chasers have won this race 3 of the last 4 years. I'm glad the production truck didn't veto that report :)
ReplyDeletethey've mentioned that stat all weekend in practice and qual i think.
ReplyDeleteBowyer passed before the Green. Duh

ReplyDelete'I am the anon who posted the stick with the biff info - that was what the graphic on Raceday said. I am sure by mid week they will be for sale.'
Didn't mean to sound snappy, I'm just disappointed!
Oh, good, now Punch has memorized the drivers' names, so he can say, "Earnhardt, Gordon, Allmendinger" when they're on his monitor instead of just listing their car numbers!
ReplyDelete@ Rich, I was wondering what happened to Clint. Had to freeze the race, roommate on an errand. I have to read what's going on and look @ NASCAR.com at the leaderboard. Here comes roommate now, yea!!
ReplyDeleteNice pictures and good sound. Now the challenge is to tell the story.
ReplyDeleteHey maybe we'll have a pass today for the lead. Here comes Kenseth on Johnson's bumper...
ReplyDeletelet's send it to commercial 13 laps into the race (about 8 minutes in) and we just won't show the pass for the lead.
First 13 laps on Hotpass 798 with Larry Mac has been super. Bye Bye ESPU
ReplyDeleteI would rather they get the breaks out of the way now than with 25 laps to go. Imagine if they had gone to break last week during all that good racing!!!!
ReplyDeleteor they could be like any other sport and not go to beark in important situations at all
ReplyDeleteOk, just got in missed the drop of the green flag but should be here mostly, while doing some other stuff.
ReplyDeleteRigirl, I SO agree about the Tylenol commercial..even though it's over done, it cracks me up with Happy's expression:)
I am going to read a lot here today as I do other things. I can't just FOCUS on the races these days between ESPN junk and "the girls".
Sexist sophia :)
Larry Mac tries to cover the whole race not just his assigned driver (29). His knowledge of Sprint cup is phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteI would rather they get the breaks out of the way now than with 25 laps to go.
ReplyDeleteSadly, they may well do that anyway!
Just hearing the 18 car is blowing up.
ReplyDeleteWaltrip is passing Chase contenders like they're standing still, but I guess they won't mention that unless he wrecks one, huh?
ReplyDeleteShrub says the engine sounds sour
ReplyDeleteDo you guys know that Hotpass has side by side race coverage during commercials? Neat
ReplyDeleteon KB's HotPass channel right now...engine does not sound right as he accelerates
ReplyDelete@ Rich, rub it in, lol.
ReplyDeleteCan I just say I love the way the infield grass is mowed. If I had a lawn, it would look like that.
KB says "tell the guys if they wreck to take me with them"
ReplyDelete'Up to Speed' is only updating the Chase drivers. You've got to be kidding me with this.
ReplyDeleteIs this honestly an up-to-speed with JUST the chase drivers?
ReplyDeleteNew drinking game: Take a shot every time Shannon starts a sentence with "Yeah..."
ReplyDeleteYou won't last long!
@Alex--The Money Store *used* to be a mortgage company based in Sacramento, CA. We did sub-prime Home Improvement loans, we were bought out by First Union (now Wachovia) and after FU bought us, they decided to shut down the mortgage division and now TMS is HomEq doing servicing for the old TMS portfolio, Wachovia's and other companies. Phil Rizutto was our spokesman for years before Jim Palmer came onboard. TMS was family owned for over 30 years but they saw back in 98/99 that they needed a bigger "checkbook" to survive so sold it to FU which later was bought by Wachovia. I worked for them for about 8 years before moving on...I miss those bonuses :(.
ReplyDelete@JD--Thanks for the clarification on why you keep listing the media center...very frustrating when you expect it and if they get to it, it's the same interview from VL we saw an hour ago :(
maybe plug wire on 18
ReplyDeleteKB has diagnosed his problem as possibly being down 2 cylinders. This info from Hotpass not ESPN.
ReplyDeleteDot, I love the pattern of the infield grass too I meant to mention that earlier. And they aren't mentioning many non-chase drivers today either.
ReplyDeletevickers up from 9th to 3rd. mears from 10-th to 6th. TRUEX takes the lead.
ReplyDeleteand barely any if not absolutely NO mentions of these drivers.
ahhhh keep it here with bestwick.
WHATS UP WITH THAT? is brad not paying attention?
oh sure! rub it in rich! :p
ReplyDeleteI guess ESPN still doesn't get it at all--people are NOT watching this race to see the Chase drivers unless they're already a fan of one of them.
ReplyDeleteI'd bet there are, in total, a lot more people watching non-chase drivers.
18 just got lapped
ReplyDeleteGuess there are only 12 cars on the track oh yea and Truex
ReplyDeletebrad just saw kyle busch getting lapped and he said "what's up with that?"
ReplyDeletenot even paying attention until this part of the broadcast, eh?
stricklinfan82 said...

i second that surprise. i just got in, turned on the race and thought i'd timed it well and would actually get a thru the field recap. instead, i get a chaser update. has there been a true thru the field yet today?
(and i just have to say this: way to go, phillies! woo hoo! ok, i'm finished now: back to the race . . .)
Can you imagine the call if a non-Chase driver wins?
ReplyDelete"And Matt Kenseth takes second at Kansas!"
I feel bad for Kylie...winning everything from the gate to not being able to catch a break
ReplyDeleteRed good thing you stopped watching Prerace, you would have gotten the Puerto Rican parade
ReplyDeleteLarry Mac on HotPass 798 is following the race not only Harvick,he,s giving alot of info about alot of drivers, and Brad Keselowski on 796 a good touch. What a difference between HotPass and most of the ESPN coverage IMO.
ReplyDelete24 doing pretty good for being "sick"
ReplyDeleteKyle was shaking his car back and forth going INTO turn 3, which led to Brad's comment. Maybe there's a better way to put it, but I think "what's up with that" is justified.
ReplyDeletevickers may pass kenseth and 1-2 will be truex and vickers. will espn even show the leaders the rest of the race if that stayed like that?
ReplyDeleteanonymous said...

now THAT'S funny right there! and oh so very close to being true, i fear.
Rich said, "Do you guys know that Hotpass has side by side race coverage during commercials? Neat"
ReplyDeleteThat is where I go during commercials...switch to in car audio and ignore the commercials
If Truex keeps leading, DJ's going to have to do one of his, "We haven't talked much about ___ today" reports about him!
ReplyDeleteLucky they took that shot of pit road, or Doc wouldn't have had any idea there was a jam-up involving the 99 car.
ReplyDeletelove to see a replay of the 99 issue
ReplyDeleteI may fall out of my chair! They just showed MW's entire pit stop!
ReplyDeleteDid someone from this board commandeer the production truck?
Boy, those replays can really make you look bad if you don't know what's happening on the track eh?
ReplyDeleteNow that was something, OK now reset the field please
ReplyDeletenice replays. love the low angle
ReplyDeleteYIKES! That could have been uglier with Cousin Carl & Brian
ReplyDeleteAnonymous said...

ReplyDeleteGood pitstops this race is moving along fast. Poor Carl, driver's spotters or crew chiefs not paying attention.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pit road penalties - I'm so mad the 21 was speeding, that's too bad.
ReplyDeleteKBs HotPass channel reports that Kyle says everything is OK with the car now.
ReplyDeleteSo instead of resetting the field or talking about vickers and dinger (6 & 7) we get Lagono who's lapped already. WTH

Perfectly said. So much promise after a decent Dover broadcast and two straight solid Nationwide broadcasts that didn't focus solely on the points contenders. Unfortunately we're seeing a New Hampshire repeat where only the Chasers matter.
NASCAR 101 in the middle of the chase...just send them to Amazon and tell them to buy the book.
ReplyDeleteRight on Haus20
ReplyDeleteahhhh. now punch is told he has to explain how the chase points works. sure hope the theoretical "casual fan" appreciated that information.
ReplyDeletei certainly would like to hear about THE RACE and not the minute by minute status of the chasers. only 2chaser are in the top 10 and we don't hear about the other 8 drivers . . .
and how about setting the ENTIER field?
Now, now, I'm sure that ABC will explain the rules of football during the MNF broadcast tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteRed, sorry but that is not in the script
ReplyDelete"What do you need to do to win this race (or chase)?", is the most over asked question in motorsports
ReplyDeleteLet's see if the next through the field is just The Chase guys again.
ReplyDeleteThat was a mind blower.
JD
boy, you'd think the #48 is leading the race today, not the #17.
ReplyDeleteand now we'er back to the #18 and we STILL haven't gone thru the field.
"Keep talking about the 18 until we can figure out what caused it!"
ReplyDeleteHa. Waiting for reset after green flag stops and all ESPN can muster is a NASCAR for Dummies explanation of why Greg Biffle isn't leading the points and this strange concept of "bonus points". ("Daddy, how many points is a touchdown worth?") Now pre-taped junk from Jimmie Johnson.
ReplyDeleteAll NASCAR fans are in desperate need of an ESPN buyout right now.
78, 77, & 7 2 laps down does anyone know why. Now it's all about Kyle and there is a yellow for some reason?????
ReplyDeleteThis focus on the chase is just way too much.
ReplyDeleteESPN does NOT get it..my screen keeps going black a couple seconds..back on now.
I think i am bored and I bet KB was faking us out..who knows.
WHy such a HUGE IN CAR CAM for KYLE???? OVER green flag..put hiim in the smaller box. ????????????????
The wreck wasn't on the screen so they don't talk about it!
ReplyDeleteSorry, that was Re; the caution.
ReplyDeleteMy race feed keeps flashing to black! But the sound and ABC logo stay put. Whats going on??? Watching via KGTV HD in San Diego.
ReplyDeleteno need to actually show the caution or the racing, espn. just keep the cameras and analysis on kyle busch back in 34th and a lap down. real good coverage.
ReplyDelete(and i apologize for the typos today: a bandaid on my index finger is throwing me off. a coupla more typos and i'm going to rip it off and hope i don't bleed on the keyboard too badly.)
ReplyDeleteALL KYLE all the time.
ReplyDeleteWho cares. I am so disappointed with this ENTIRE ESPN Booth guys.
Guess they'll tell us Clint is lucky dog but then prob the last one of the day inless it's KB. And Look pitstops and the field was never reset after the last round of green flag runs.
ReplyDeleteThree cars collide on pit road, but they haven't noticed yet..
ReplyDeletemine flashed black also.
ReplyDeletedid the booth not even know there was caution?
ReplyDeleteJamie, you should have said that it's a much needed caution to bunch up the field per Nascar's request!
ReplyDeletered
ReplyDeletehope the finger is ok..funny how much fingers can hurt..especailly since the tip has so many nerve endings...it is a hindrance for typing.
Happy commercial :)
JD, I think there is some confusing. You keep expecting the "in the chase" segment, which is a form of "through the field" to include all driver. But the fact is, it is only a chase segment. I don't see how you can put non chase drivers in a chase driver segment. I mean, if you want a segment for non-chase drivers then say so, but again, I dont see why you should put these non-chase drivers in the chase segment. What way you?
ReplyDeleteWe were talking about the challenge of picking which story to tell during the race.
ReplyDeleteThat certainly has been the case today. All this hopping around has not really let any story be fully told.
Really need a full field recap after the restart.
JD
If they aren't looking out the window while they call the race, and I can see action on the screen that they don't, what the &^%$ are the guys in the booth watching?
ReplyDeleteconfusion*
ReplyDelete17 missed a lugnut and had to come back in
ReplyDeleteAh, someone told them about the pit-road contact. Good.
ReplyDeletewe would like to know how EVERY driver is doing! not just chase drivers. how do you pass the guys who are racing in the top 10 to show drivers 34th, a lap down, etc?
ReplyDeletePulling The Chase drivers out and just updating them is tough to take.
ReplyDeleteAs one poster put it best, fans have not changed loyalty simply because their driver is not in The Chase.
Why eliminate the entire field except for 12 drivers when you recap? If you noticed, there has not been another recap of any kind.
The biggest issue for ESPN is handling the Chasers vs. describing the actual race.
JD
there is so much that espn has missed and this isn't a hard track to cover. cant wait for talladega!
ReplyDeleteCasey leading dissed by JP for an update on the 31, this is a mess today
ReplyDeleteMy God are the guys in the booth BLINDFOLDED!! Cripes, if it wasn't for the crappy OVER USE of bumper cams, gopher cams and in car cams, and LACK OF FIELD FINISHING, it "ALMOST" makes you miss FOX. least their crew would tell us what was GOING ON ON THE TRACK a little beter
ReplyDeleteOksay, two sentences about Casey leading. Now, get back to talking about the 18 car!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the guys in the booth and pit reporters don't realize there's other cars out there besides the chasers.
ReplyDeleteanon 3:07: you raise a good question and i won't answer for jd but what I want is a true "thru the field": i want to know where all the drivers on the lead lap are and any RACING stories that might be involved. recappping the chasers is part of that bigger picture but we rarely, if ever, get a true "thru the field" after a caution. that used to be a standard practice and it's just not happening on espn's coverage.
ReplyDelete(and oh yeah! the #5 is LEADING the race and we didn't really hear about it . . . we're back to talking about the #18 instead. sorry, mears, you are not in the script this week. please roll over for a chaser.)
Carl Edwdards must feel like a pingpong ball on pit road. Already 2 incidents.
ReplyDelete@anon 2:51--Oh I know! I was in shock that they showed Mikey and his stop!
ReplyDeleteI hope your finger feels better red :(
JD, is there a different production truck for ESPN's Nationwide coverage than there is for their Cup coverage all of a sudden?
ReplyDeleteESPN's Cup practice coverage on Friday was junk but you said their Nationwide practice coverage the same day was great. The last two Nationwide races have done a very good job of focusing on non-points contenders and interviewing them when they fell out of the race. Today though only the Chasers matter, even in the 'Up to Speed' segment.
What gives?
camera choices after this caution are nice.
ReplyDeletedifferent producer stricklinfan.
ReplyDeleteABC only talking about Chasers ...
ReplyDeleteOnly car a lap down that they seem to be able to see is Kylie ...
sophia and gymmie: i have great faith in the ability of my mac book to withstand some bleeding on the keys! thanks.
ReplyDeleteman, there was a gret toss to doc about how to help an ailing driver during a race and he gives us a racing cliche instead. even when they tap into his specific knowledge base, he gives us . . . nothing.
what was with punch emphasizing HENNNNNNDRICK motorsports before commercial. his famous 'how about casey mears' before break too.
ReplyDeleteLots of non-chasers in the 10 - 15the spots but we won't see or hear about it! I don't like that 30 minute ab commercial either.
ReplyDeleteWho does ESPN think likes this coverage? Are they reading some board I've never heard of where fans actually enjoy this coverage?
ReplyDeleteOr is their attitude, "You just don't know what's best, and we do, so deal with it?"
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAHHHH a little AB PXP even 3 minutes was fantastic
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that Brad recognized the driveshaft piece on the track. Good call.
ReplyDeleteMaybe all the folks in Bristol, CT email ESPN with their appreciation of fine broadcasting of the Nascar races. Thanks Allen for telling us that the #18 car is back on the lead lap!!!!
ReplyDeleteBrad's taking what Rusty says and then tries to expand on it ... It doesn't work ...
ReplyDeleteBrad would NOT have know what that piece of metal was on pit road ...
Kyle Petty got the call to bring out the caution to benefit Weed.
ReplyDeleteOh no Bootie a driveshaft, that's a problem, how did that happen.
ReplyDeleteJD and others
ReplyDeleteWHY CAN"T they split the chase races? Run the 12 in one race and the others in a separate race?
Folks keep asking me that since ALL THEY hear about in the media is "the chase guys"
The other guys are being ignored anyway. Since so many HATE THE OVER FOCUS on the chase, I bet many fans would watch the OTHER!

ReplyDeleteI doubt it. I sure wouldn't.
Sophia, that's not goigng to happen.
ReplyDeleteIt's part of the deal of racing. NASCAR can't help it if the TV people are so short-sighted in their coverage.
@ Anon, it's a joke, son.
ReplyDeleteJD do you know why they would change the music for JJ's commercial. It's growing on me but the initial one was perfect.
ReplyDelete"it's a joke"

ReplyDeletedifferent producer stricklinfan.
September 28, 2008 3:13 PM
Oh, wow. Maybe I'm the only person here that didn't know that but I thought the production trucks were the exact same for both series. I was ready to let them off the hook and assume the difference in coverage philosophy could be explained by some kind of edict from "above".
I won't blame you if you choose not to speculate on this subject, but do you suppose this huge difference between the coverage of the different series is as simple as this one man/woman alone or is there still a "bigger picture" involved here?
@ Anon, it's a joke, son.
ReplyDeleteBesides, when NASCAR wants a caution, they just find a gum wrapper on the track and call it "debris."
"or is there still a "bigger picture" involved here?"
ReplyDeleteIt's never just one person with productions this big. There is a group of people that sits down around a table before the next race and ponders and decides what will go into the coverage.
I won't blame you if you choose not to speculate on this subject, but do you suppose this huge difference between the coverage of the different series is as simple as this one man/woman alone or is there still a "bigger picture" involved here?
ReplyDeleteI have experience in this field, and I'll call it "one man/one woman alone." It's the Executive Producer's vision, carried out by the show producer.
@ Anon 3:24, so true.
ReplyDelete"they just find a gum wrapper on the track and call it "debris." "
ReplyDelete....sigh
And do ya'll notice that Sliced Bread has not been mentioned yet?
ReplyDeletethat #2 car is scary loose -- just danced against the wall again. wonder how long before it goes "crash"?
ReplyDeleteWasn't Riggs running 12th when he had the problem that put him out?
ReplyDeleteI would think maybe that would be worth an interview.
stricklinfan, everything is the same including the truck and facilities. Just a different person producing. As one poster said, same management as well.
JD
Logano, Junior, Stewart....nothing.
ReplyDeleteVicky D said...
ReplyDeleteAnd do ya'll notice that Sliced Bread has not been mentioned yet?
Yes he was and he was already lapped but he still got the mention instead of non chasers in the top 10
RESET THE FIELD PLEASE
ReplyDelete"Reutimann having a good run...oops, got to go to a break. can't talk about him."
ReplyDeleteI sure do find it strange to be using bumper music to break when the track is hot under green flag racing.
ReplyDeleteUsually, we see this under caution. The music choices are also quite...interesting.
JD
I imagine it's humbling for Logano to be in the back for a change. If he's won everything he's been in, this should be a sobering experience.
ReplyDeleteReut having a good run, JP are you paying attention he's 30th and trying very hard to keep himself from getting lapped AGAIN.
ReplyDeleteThis is a mess today, even the chasers being talked about are so random. If they would just reset the field through at least 20th (although I would prefer all lead lap cars) and then the notables.
There we go..they finlly mentioned Logano. When he wrecked.
ReplyDeleteSliced Bread is Toast again
ReplyDeleteThanks JD and you 'anons' with knowledge of the behind-the-scenes workings of a NASCAR production truck. I always appreciate having as much information at my disposal as possible when it comes to things I can't see with my own two eyes.

ReplyDeleteGood for Reut for staying on the lead lap. Let's see they are actually showing Casey Mears in the pits. WOW.
ReplyDelete@ 3Bud,
ReplyDeleteDitto from Dot.
JD do you know about Technical Directing? I have a question about that. What is the TD using to bring in and out those animated Lower thirds? Chyron or something else?
ReplyDeleteIf Tony's car won't get out of your way in the pits, just kick it!
ReplyDeleteDo you think JP saw the guy kick the car in the door? Only DJ and Andy were laughing about it.
ReplyDeleteTry me on the TD question.
JP looking out the window, good for you

ReplyDeleteRemember a couple of years ago when Brian Vickers was on This Week In Winston Cup (I think that was the name) Mikey was making fun of him running over a crew member. He's been in the way a couple of times today. Poor Matt.
ReplyDeleteThe Goodhands move of the race is absolutely a waste of time.
ReplyDelete@karen--I've been thinking the same. After the poster mentioned the "issues" he had with Da Biff in a N'wide race where Toast was "upset" having to be with the "riff raff"...he's now getting a taste of it. All his life he's had his daddy pay the bills, access to the best of the best...now he's getting a taste of what it's like to bring up the rear week in and week out.
ReplyDelete@anon 3:41--I know I had to *giggle* at that kicking the car! At least the teams didn't throw down!

yep. that's half of the equation: getting it on camera real time would have been the whole package.
and can i just say that the #17 should have been the "good hands" awardee?

ReplyDeleteA switcher! Hahaha.
Does anyone who is just watching the ESPN on ABC telecast know who is where?
ReplyDeleteHey look the good hands award at lap 124 at least they listened about something anyway
