Sprint Cup Series on ABC from Loudon
The track is wet, there are no lights and ABC wants NASCAR off the air by 6PM Eastern Time. Welcome to the first race in The Chase for 2008.
It will be Allen Bestwick and his Infield Studio crew of Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty who will be setting the table for viewers. NASCAR Countdown will be on-the-air at 1PM. Certainly, the weather and The Chase should dominate this program.
Coverage is scheduled to shift to the race at 2PM, but if weather is going to delay the program ESPN may choose to simply continue with Bestwick hosting the telecast from the Infield. Bestwick is a veteran who has hosted multi-hour rain fill programming on ESPN with great success. He opens a lot of topics up for discussion and invites many drivers and personalities to the Infield Studio for interviews.
If and when the race begins, it will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree calling the action. This team has been together all season calling the Nationwide Series races for ESPN and the seven months of experience has hopefully prepared them for the high-profile pressure of The Chase.
Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Tim Brewer will be along in the Tech Center. It should be interesting to see if ABC has SportsCenter updates on other sports inserted into the race.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 298 of 298Get ready for the post race interview of Denny. Any bets if he throws his CC under the bus, again?
Right on, Jo.
What's the weird fetish they have with all the spotters talking at the same time? And can't they cut from it when the field is crashing?
not a fan of "full throttle."
heard dj/petree's "oh!" ahead of them turning off the full throttle to focus on the wreck. could be a red flag.
hope kenseth's ok
5, 17, 38, 45. Let's hope ESPN chooses to interview more than just Matt Kenseth from that group of drivers that just crashed out.
How did we get to see a wreck in real time? Unscripted TV, gotta love it.
well its red flag, so we'll see lots of Commercials. Hopefully we get the field reset, and updates on drivers.
I'm not holding my breath.
PRN already doing interviews Mears into garage car up for work.
To say something nice, Very good replay of accident & explanation of how it happened.
Big sigh of relief they had that replay. No one had a clue what was going on.
Just in from the beach, red the comments and realized nothing has changed (color me not surprised). Well at least they got the monster moment right, what a mess. Not sure how Clint got the good hands driver seems to me he was part of the problem
new - he got the Good hands cuz he was the closest chaser around!
Junior= "Chuck Norris could run the apron 5 wide"
To the poster on the previous page and extra post race coverage. So much for that.
JD, let's pretend for a moment that the race goes beyond 3/6pm due to the red flag. You had written before that they have to show green to checker flags per the contract. What happens then?
@ Jo, quit posting before I get a chance to publish. I have to add on. You're killing me, as always.
Jo but of course should have thought of that, guess the sea air has got me confused
JD
Why on earth are they interviewing CC when the drivers are available?!
PRN has had interviews w/drivers.
Fuel Milage vs driver interviews. DUH
no new just out of practice LOL you have been in real world today ;)
Jo nope
The coverage is within the window to finish on ABC even if it runs a little bit long. Post-race should be interesting.
We're now on yellow.
Post race what's that, JD you mean VL right.
JD or anyone
Is post race for the top 2 or 3 a mandatory part of the contract w/#$%^/Abc?
or can they move it around to different channels?

guess not . . .
Leave it to DJ to slip in a Hornaday mention. Nicely done.
jo, only the winner on TV. However, the first, second and third place drivers must go to the Infield Media Center for a press conference.
well, Dj actually managed to say something about Hornaday. It occured to me that as much as I would like DJ and Andy to make a public comment about the smarmey journalism, one, obviously they really can't, but two when would they? But DJ at least found a way to say something I'm glad.
J.D.,
I was watching a series of cautions and a race broke out!

Well, you can't characterize that as a "hindsight observation". Immediately interviewing Kenseth and filling the rest of the red flag time with Chase crew chief interiews and videos. WHAT A JOKE!
Correct me if I'm wrong because I missed small portions of the broadcast but I don't recall seeing Jamie McMurray or Joe Nemechek being interviewed by ESPN either.
5 non-Chasers crashed out and were never interviewed. One Chaser crashed out (in the same incident as 3 of those other 5) and was immediately interviewed within a matter of minutes.
Coincidence? I think not.
@ Strick, all Chasers all the time. How long have you been watching? lol

Dot you're too fast today.
Everyone knows "odd wads" don't rate interviews. Grrr... I hate the absence of interviews & the drivers were available PRN caught a couple.
@ Strick, just caught the "hindsight" comment in your post. You're killing me too. My funeral is after the race.
JD will the complete post race conference be available somewhere?
Does Jimmy not go against the best of the best every week?
Jo, thanks for confirming those other drivers were available for interviews as well. I just can't imagine being Mike Massaro there having to say "Excuse me David, pardon me Casey, Chad can you move aside so I can interview the Chaser that was involved in that crash?"
I'm not saying it's Massaro's fault by any means. I'm sure he's only allowed to do what the production truck tells him to. Clearly it's not in the script to interview a non-Chaser for any reason at all.... even under a red flag when absolutely nothing else is going on.
ESPNews, I think.
Shorter Shannon on the 99 - they're about 2 laps short on fuel. See, just cut 10 seconds to spend on the next driver.
No pit stops? And they're talking about not making it all the way to the end? Is this in the script?
wow I could be wrong, but I believe this is the first time the motorsports calendar include CTS and Speed. is this somehow allowed on ABC but not on ESPN? weird
Let's see if ESPN interviews A.J. Allmendinger after that crash, or better yet if they follow-up on the top 35 in owner's points situation after the chckered flag. My guess would be 'no' and both fronts but I'm willing to be surprised.
Doc isn't annoying me so much to day, but I can't figure out why/
hey! they mentioned the trucks! And Seed! Wow.

dj and petree are jumping in whenever it would be a normal time for PxP to speak up. so, we're actaully hearing PxP from the color guys in the booth.
you know, I think DJ just hit the nail on the head in saying the top 11 are all chasers. so yeah of course TV focus will be on the chasers if they're taking up the top 11!?!? I see this as obvious television, and don't get the complaints about too much focus on these drivers
Doesn't anyone in the truck get it?
The top 35 need to stay in top 35 to be guaranteed starts next year!
Since the question earlier had to do with NEXT YEARS chase - why not recap the top 35! DUH!?!
KuB and Truex are running in the top ten. They are invisible to %#(*.
It does seem like Punch is on the mic much less today
Anon 5:23
Yes, if all you are interested in IS the chase, and the only drivers that you follow are in this group. Not all fans fall into this and so it is the responsablility of the entity covering the race to cover all of it not just the parts that satisfy good tv.
hey! whaddya' know? there's some RACIN' going on out there today!
Got to love Punch talking about Bowyer being so good in practice - we wouldn't know about that since ESPN "covered" it without ever showing any cars on the track.
Doc's lookin' out the window. YES!
@bevo
You are so right on that one!
Maybe if they showed the cars having practice we could agree with Doc
Wreck, caution, commercial.
There's less than 15 laps left! You can't stick around to let us know what the situation is after the cuation???
Sorry to get in the way of your commercials ESPN.
I'm glad DJ acknowledged Hornaday ...
Was surprised to see Bodine on NN this morning ...
@ bevo, Ditto.
Four wrenches in the top 10.
Where did this come from??????
Guys you are at the freakin TRACK its your job to tell ME!!!!!!!!!!
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was at the track earlier ... Not sure if he's still there ...
Did JP say "white flag" the 00, or did I miss hear?
I am watching hot pass, but have they had a good hands move of the race? Usually the move of the race is shown half way through the race, but I digress. Anyway, Denny or Jeff should get the award for avoiding that wreck.
Dr. Punch's call of what could very well be the winning lead change:
(monotone) "Where did that come from?"
Nothing more. Yikes.
JD - Do you know who had the broadcast rights to the Champ Atlantic series this year?? And if someone is going to show today's race from New Jersey ??
Come on JP! Last 10 laps, lead's changing. Call the action, not where everyone stands in the championship!
If the Bif pulls this off JR is gonna be SOOOOO happy!
Come on... call the race, don't pontificate
Way to go, Biff.
nice closing shot! thanks for that one, guys.
@ 8, I thought the same thing. Great minds....
Congratulations Da Biff :)
Biff was PRN's in-race reporter for today
Showing almost all crossing the finish line. Baby steps....
Victory Lane should be fun. John Roberts has been picking Biffle every race for a long time to win.
As much as I am a 48 fan, great job Biff. JD who's on TWIN this week?
espn / abc showed cars crossing the finish line!! ok good job on that one.
Tony just told new spotter "good job"
spotter "can I come back next week"
Tony "we'll see I suppose so" you could tell they were joking - think it'll be a "story"?
can someone please send tapes of other announcers calling the end of a race to JP? Please?
did you see the signboard that said "please take drink"....too funny.
SPEED confirms Greg Biffle will be on TWIN at 8PM on Monday.
That should be a blast!
She said "Thank the fans" first. heh
Did Jimmy just hold a towel over his Gatorade?

I can send a link would that help?
Its for replays, I'll send him my password too ;) that way its free. LOL I doubt improvement is in budget.
Congrats to Da Biff
Did I hear JP say Greg Fumble when talking about the Red Sox? I know I did.
Biffle told PRN that he's gonna be on TWIN tomorrow ...
Carl Edwards..."the Vitamin water even tastes good right now..."
Ummm Carl, how are we supposed to take that? Does it not normally taste good? Way to take care of the sponsor.
Biff is on TWIN he just told PRN. So he can talk w/ Mike about race!
Just heard Greg interviewed on PRN & he's gonna be on Fast Talk tomorrow nite also!
This fake drinking out of the bottles and cans is really getting out of hand
Does Denny Hamlin ever quit blaming things on his crew and NASCAR?
Isn't it nice to get a little post race and not rush off the air. Why can't they take five ten minutes at the end of the show like this every week and make the fans happy?
Boyd
Nope its Dennys M.O.
Just before they started the interview with Biffle, you could see a woman behind the reporter facing Biffle and she had a wipe board with some things written on it. I got the impression that it was a PR person and they had the "talking points" all written out for Biffle to say.
Its bad enough that most of the drivers take the fake drink of what ever crap they are being sponsored and that they can't answer a question like a normal person, but have to mention every sponsor anytime they say something.
The fact of seeing that the person is there to make sure the driver stays on script during the winner's interview just pushes me over the edge. Can't just be natural and normal, they have to be perfect robots. No wonder the sport is losing fans.
How many Chasers go to the banquet? I don't remember from last year. Is it all 12?
12 only 10 were on stage
diane-
See JD's post @ 5:46
No surprise that ESPN wrapped up the day with no interviews with a driver outside the Chase. Can't blame it on "Chasers taking all the top spots" when the 6th and 7th place finishers (non-Chasers) are blown off in favor of 9th place finisher Denny Hamlin and crew chief for Chaser Kyle Busch.
Also, as expected, no follow-up on the top 35 in owner's points battle before leaving the air.
Just a terrible day of coverage all around.
Thanks Bevo, I didn't see J.D.'s comment. I tried to read the sign, but he must have a better resolution tv than I do.
No interview with KyB but there is his CC. Now we know why he isn't championship material.
Agreed about Denny (Diva) Hamlin, too.
Thanks Jo. That's what I thought. Makes no sense imo. Twelve chasers, ten acknowledged.
Dot - its NA$CAR LOL why would anything make sense ?
It would be actions detrimental to stock car racing...
@ Jo, so is the race coverage.
Kudos to ABC for showing the rest of the field as they crossed the finish line! Keep up the good work!
There is a new post up for your comments on the Sprint Cup Series telecast on ABC from Loudon.
Thanks,
JD
Thanks everybody for stopping by!
I know that Tim Brewer is knowledgeable but I wish he'd either cut or paint his nails.
Oh Dot you are so on the $$$ today!
