Sprint Cup Series on ABC from Loudon
The track is wet, there are no lights and ABC wants NASCAR off the air by 6PM Eastern Time. Welcome to the first race in The Chase for 2008.
It will be Allen Bestwick and his Infield Studio crew of Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty who will be setting the table for viewers. NASCAR Countdown will be on-the-air at 1PM. Certainly, the weather and The Chase should dominate this program.
Coverage is scheduled to shift to the race at 2PM, but if weather is going to delay the program ESPN may choose to simply continue with Bestwick hosting the telecast from the Infield. Bestwick is a veteran who has hosted multi-hour rain fill programming on ESPN with great success. He opens a lot of topics up for discussion and invites many drivers and personalities to the Infield Studio for interviews.
If and when the race begins, it will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree calling the action. This team has been together all season calling the Nationwide Series races for ESPN and the seven months of experience has hopefully prepared them for the high-profile pressure of The Chase.
Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Tim Brewer will be along in the Tech Center. It should be interesting to see if ABC has SportsCenter updates on other sports inserted into the race.
This post will serve to host your TV-related comments about the ABC coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Loudon. Why does ABC want the race off at 6pm ET? "This Week" is on @ 6pm, then paid programming is on after that until 7:30pm. Seems to me that they have some wiggle room.
ReplyDeleteOn the west coast they seem to have a good hour and a half after the scheduled end of the race of local stuff before they bump into the local news.
ReplyDeletedot,
ReplyDeleteThat is just in your local area. The sports window ends at 6PM. Those other programs belong to other ABC departments. This is very different from cable TV where everything is controlled from one point.
The network has affiliates around the country who take "feeds" from the network during specific time periods.
Here in South Florida, we have the ABC World News at 6PM and they the local station news at 6:30PM. Both those programs want to be on the air as scheduled. It should be interesting.
geez,
It does not work like that. This is a national program with a TV contract for national TV. You cannot and ABC will not send a portion of the country away. That is why TV guys talk in Eastern Time because that is usually where the problems happen first.

Thanks JD I thought it was always ET because thats the earliest time zone in continental US - missed the & thats where timing problems start.
Here we go!
ReplyDeleteHey Bevo, thanks for the tip on who the announcers are going to be on Hotpass. After how ESPU handled the Hornaday affair I for one intend to watch Hotpass today. I think radio would be a good alternative also. But who can resist watching Scrubs race as described by Wendy
ReplyDeleterich-
ReplyDeleteGlad to oblige. BTW radio is PRN today
JD, I just watched my DVRed NASCAR Performance. It was very interesting, Chad and Booty grilled Pemberton;)
ReplyDeleteIt could be interesting for those of us in the midwest watching via DirecTV or DISH. It is pouring here halfway between Indy and Chicago (IKE leftovers). Many could possibly experience "rain fade." I just got my signal back a few minutes ago...I was at church this morning so I have no idea how long it had been out.
ReplyDeleteBoth NASCAR Performance and Tradin' Paint were OK.
ReplyDeleteI wish SPEED had promoted NASCAR Performance with Robin Pemberton as the guest a lot more. I had hoped they would use some of it on RaceDay.
Let me say one thing, Robin Pemberton on TWIN on a Monday would be great with Knaus and Waltrip. Hope SPEED and NMG considers it.
BTW - track drying nicely at present I am told.
JD
Really don't like how RaceDay ends an hour before the race, wish they would go back to being up right up till the race. Anyone know why they did that? Did Nascar make them stop competing with others?
ReplyDeleteBill H
Bill...that would be yes. All the shows from the SPEED Stage on the weekends from the tracks are produced by the NASCAR Media Group. That is NASCAR's TV company.
ReplyDeleteThis year, RaceDay is not going to overlap with the other NASCAR TV partners pre-race shows. It really put the whammy on RaceDay.
JD
Wow its really #$%^ on abc - the dang ticker on the bottom is here
ReplyDeletePRN interviewed Ryan Newman & now Bill Elliott. TV muted till green flag- looked over and saw Stew/Zip video being shown again.
ReplyDeleteWow, Jr and Smoke talking to the reporters. NASCARs iron fist again?
ReplyDeleteDOT,
ReplyDeleteOr Stewart and Earnhardt realized that they over-reacted to ESPN's responsibility to cover the issues of the race, and they need that publicity and TV time.
Should be interesting to see if they switch to Punch and company at 2PM. We really don't know what the updated track schedule is right now.

Let's pray they don't.

More likely than not. Just like the post race if they finish 1 2 or 3 they must be with media for a set amount of time. Since NA$CAR herded them in NYC all week I bet they were told to make nice - if its not in a contract somewhere or a rule in the book no one gets to see!
Affiliates can lose revenue when NASCAR wipes out their local programming time between the end of the NASCAR window, and the start of ABC primetime.
ReplyDeleteJD,
ReplyDeleteIf the race is still going on after 3pm/6pm, will they move it to another channel? If so, which one?
dot,
ReplyDeleteIf you could answer that one, you would have a long and rich history in TV sports.
All you can do is wave the green and let it fly.
?? "o, canada"? very nicely done, don't get me wrong and i know new hampshire is close to canada but, ummmm, just perplexing, i guess.
ReplyDeleteand another GREAT job by diamond rio!
Wonder why they sung the Canadian anthem? The race is in the USA. They dont sing the mexican anthem in Texas.
ReplyDeleteDiamond Rio should always do the Anthem. When they do it, I never mute the TV.
ReplyDeleteLots of Canadian fans there. They do the same thing at MIS.
ReplyDeletewow, AB on the toss to punch, "Jerry Punch ready to, I assume" sounded very sarcastic and bitter? anyone else catch the toss?
ReplyDeleteThanks JD.
ReplyDeleteLet the Chase coverage only begin.
'nice shotgun'? is that supposed to be a football reference?
ReplyDeleteInteresting Anon 2:10, I missed that
ReplyDeleteThere are many Canadian fans that cross the border to come to the New Hamshire race. Bob Bahre always respected them by performing both anthems. Nice to see Bruton carry that along.
ReplyDeleteSince this is a Chase race, all I would ask today is if we could try to focus on the TV coverage. This is a fast and relatively short race that may be ended by rain.
It should be very interesting to see which storylines ESPN follows, especially with the field starting on points. Thanks.
JD
Junior just asked Mr.H how he was talking to him from the couch. Reply- "I'm here, you aren't that lucky.."
ReplyDeleteThe bottom ticker disappeared. I would think they'll have it to prevent people from flipping to Fox or CBS.
ReplyDeleteIt felt to me like ESPN was swiping at Jr and Tony in the questions and topics that were being discussed. It also felt way too pointed that they were trotted out in that little 'we're all ok' interviews right off the top.
ReplyDeleteI agree that AB's toss to the booth was odd and I wasn't sure how to interpert it.
Rick Hendrick is here today and Jr didn't know he was coming. Wonder why.
ReplyDeleteNow giving BIG pep talk. What up?
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this race will go better than the Jags/Bills game. Blargh! Between them and my Gamecocks, I'm getting quite disillusioned with football.
ReplyDeleteI think that Kyle Busch is probably going to pull off a win today, but I'd love to see Junior or Smoke get victory.
Well, we should just get rid of the eastern time zone ... since they're the ones always causing the problems with the schedules & tv broadcasts ... LOL

nothing really. earnhardt jr responds well to having hendrick there and in his ear. hendrick is likely talking to his oither drivers as well -- sign of an involved owner.
(promise that'll be my last non-coverage oriented comment, jd -- altho' i think you'd have more success herding cats. i'm just sayin' . . .)
@Anon 222
ReplyDeletedo we get to pick our new time zone???
jo, i think that would be dangerously close to being in "your own private idaho . . ."
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be fast and furios when the green flag drops. The field might be racing to halfway and this is a Chase race.
ReplyDeleteShould be watching for how ABC inserts Brewer and the infield gang. Also, how they track Logano's progress from the back of the pack.
JD
red u ain't supposed to tell LOL
ReplyDeleteshhhhh
who's looking at radar? what can we expect?
ReplyDeleteDid Hot Pass or the radio say how long the delay will be?
ReplyDeletefew more laps per PRN
ReplyDeleteWay too much attention has been focused on Logano ...
ReplyDeleteI already don't like him ...
The coverage of Logano is like your mom trying to force feed you peas & brussel sprouts ... LOL
great line: "he was wrecked and just didn't know it."
ReplyDeletenice job catching that replay.
Comp caution still at lap 35?
ReplyDeleteThat seemed like a fast commercial break
ReplyDeletei generally don't enjoy watching the #18 but petree and dj are doing a great job explaining what we're seeing and, given that he's almost wrecked several times already, it was a good idea to stay with him.
ReplyDeleteAND an intelligent use of the tech center.
I enjoy seeing Kyle Busch struggle, but do they have to keep the camera on him for 15-20 straight laps without showing anyone else?
ReplyDeleteNice use of Brewer and split-screen.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like KyBs luck bank has just been taken over by the FDIC, to use a DW analogy.
ReplyDeleteor how about not showing stewart pass bowyer for second while they camera zooms in on the 18 the whole time. then goes from showing the 18 to a replay of the 18 that they showed the first time.
ReplyDeletei'm beginning to worry that i might not get to see any racing even if it does go green. our abc channel on dishnetwork out. just have a big red screen with, "sorry...no need to call...we are aware...temp unavailable." it's been like this since about 2 hrs ago when the elec went off for a sec. all other channels are ok.
ReplyDeletewell that took a while. lol
ReplyDeletegood one Dot
ReplyDeleteJoLo is about to be lapped.
ReplyDeleteWell thats worth the media hype - poor kid
now an update of the 41st place driver...Logano. They don't talk about about 24 other drivers all season and then he gets TV time in his first race as a backmarker.
ReplyDeleteanyone have a weather radar update?
ReplyDeleteFirst time JoLo's ever been lapped in his life, I bet.
ReplyDeleteNote to HotPass - we aren't casual fans, no need to tell us what a sway bar does
ReplyDeleteChaser, Chaser, Chaser, Chaser, Chaser, non-Chaser only because he almost wrecked while in camera view of the Chaser being focused on at the time, Chaser, Chaser, Logano, Chaser, Chaser.....
ReplyDeleteThe execution of the script seems to be in full effect.
That whole Kyle pit thing went right over Jamie's head.
ReplyDelete@ ri88girl, thanks. I got another one. The Lord must be with the Ike victims today and has no time to pray for KyB to win/run well.
ReplyDelete@Anon 2:46, I agree about Sliced Bread. Can we call him toast today?
I'm sorry but these bimbo pitbabes have GOT to go!!Yabbering about how this was KyBu 1st ever Chase race...geez, he's been in the Chase before! Research, it's a concept-look into it.
ReplyDeleteok, so newman obviously took 2 tires. did they give us anyone else's strategy? sorta important on this track, doncha think . . .?
ReplyDeleteWell the script is being read well. Chasers,90% airtime JoLo 5%, field 5%
ReplyDeletethis is the breakdown of race "coverage" and jam as many comm'ls. as possible. And no I don't believe its front loading them.
#18 lapped!!
so was it a bolt? or did the bar break? Did I miss it?
ReplyDeleteSo.....what happened to Kyle's car?
ReplyDeleteDP, I agree especially since they had just played a radio transmission stating what they were going to do.
ReplyDeleteIts a secret! PitBabes can't figure it out.
ReplyDeletePunch we'd like to know what happened for sure too! Wanna tell us?????
Andy told TB "I wasn't ready to throw a guy under the bus" WOWSERS!!!
ReplyDeleteWendy - bolt broken on sway bar.
ReplyDelete20 and 11 car chiefs talking to them about it
It would be much better to find out what the problem was and then illustrate it with the Tech Center. It only makes Brewer look bad to constantly demonstrate guesses as to what happened.
ReplyDeleteNice of DJ to correct Punch and tell us that Kyle is only 1 lap down, not two.
50 laps in and the storylines are all over the place.
ReplyDeleteNo follow-up on Kyle with his crew chief. Jamie got lost.
No clue on the top ten or what the teams found on the comp caution.
On air snarky, correcting PxP guy on air
ReplyDeleteWhat a day.
Think it'll come to punches being thrown in booth? & we'll miss it for comm'ls!
Left side hind joint broke - Steve Addington
ReplyDeletePRN was saying it was the bolt on the sway bar ...
ReplyDeleteBut, they also say that 18 is consistenly the slowest car on the track ...
add to your list, jd:
ReplyDeleteno thru the field yet
no comment about who took what during the caution
and, i believe, NO mention of a single driver who isn't in the chase -- altho' they showed the #28 but never mentioned kvapil by name.
JD
ReplyDeleteplease add to your list wide angle multi car shots are fewer & fewer
This is alreayd beyond ridiculous. The only time a non-Chaser was focused on was when David Gilliland almost crashed. DJ even set the director up perfectly by mentioning Kurt Busch running in the top 5 and the director completely blew him off! UNBELIEVABLE.
ReplyDeleteMy, this booth is tense!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletetop 15 has 5 or 6 non-chasers -- including montoya! -- and yet, no word from the booth about that.
ReplyDeletelead change then as he goes to promo Doc comes alive. What a mess. I love the action on the track those tight shots of the nose of JJ's car really showed action!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd COMMERCIALS. Thank heavens for PRN or I'd never know I was watching a race
PRN says Sylvania extended race sponsorship til 2012
ReplyDeleteCorrection... the only time a non-Chaser or non-Joey Logano was focused on was when Gilliland almost crashed. I think the production truck sent a message loud and clear to DJ and the fans at home by ignoring Jarrett's mention of Kurt Busch: "The race coverage will follow our script no matter what!" Can't get any more blatant and disrespectful than that.
ReplyDeleteanyone know if we're racing the rain?
ReplyDeleteand now, an "up to speed with your chase drivers" and yet, no run thru the entire field.
someone is DETERMINED to stay on script . . .
With the IRL season over ...
ReplyDeleteWHY doesn't Disney move some of their on-air talent to NASCAR and get rid of the two blonde girls in the pits ??
Uh, excuse me Anon 3:06, I don't remember saying anything about the pit reporters. Only earlier did I mention that Jr & Smoke talked to them. Clarify.
ReplyDeleteUp To Speed featuring ONLY the Chase drivers. This is a complete debacle!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteok, i'll admit i am no fan of the #18 but this comment has nothing to do with that:
ReplyDeletehe almost wrecked yet again and almost clipped the #31, one of the valued chasers. why no black flag?
Backmarker #18 in position 43. OOPS they had to mention a back of the pack car - what about ALL the other cars???
ReplyDeleteJamie: "5 times in NASCAR history all 43 cars have finished on the lead lap."
ReplyDeleteAll I have to say is WOW.
If my driver wasn't in the chase, I would not be paying near as much attention to these races, I certainly would not want to be watching 3 cars run in circles all day.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder NASCAR teams are experiencing sponsorship problems. It has become a $20 millon gamble. If you are fortunate enough to sponsor a team in the top 20, you will get your money's worth. If you sponsor teams below that, you have just made the worst marketing deal in your company's history.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDelete@ Jo, thanks for having my back. Can someone tell me where I posted comments about the pit reporters? I thought my Lord comment might get me in trouble, though.
ReplyDeleteAnother wreck during comm'l.
again, not af an of the 18 but ya know what? if nascar had pulled him off the track, that whole mess might not have happened. that car is evil.
ReplyDeletethe booth had no idea of what just happened when they came back from commercial. a close up of kyle busch with damage. then they show mcmurray and they assume he had damage and was in it. then the camera randomly shows david ragan who had extensive damage too.
ReplyDeleteno excitement. they try to figure it out as they go. and it was at commercial as well.
give this up ESPN. busch isn't the only one you should show.
Just like last year the time interval is replaced by "if the race ended now here are the points".What trash.

JD
Oh, no the 18 wrecked!
ReplyDeleteNow our script is 1/6 th of way wasted.
What will we cover now!
now an in-car of kyle busch during the wreck. the question is...will they continue to show him even if he is in the garage and not on the track? how will that deviate from their script?
ReplyDeletePRN wasn't exactly sure either what happened ... other than the 18 finally wrecking ...
ReplyDeleteand more commercials.
ReplyDeleteJD this is awful just awful.
Even by my low expectations for this "network"
Is Doug Rice anchoring the PRN coverage?
ReplyDelete@ JD, my back thanks you too.
ReplyDeleteDot, Im guessing cuz im not going to scroll up to look but maybe it was the 'bimbo' word? didn't you use it in an earlier comment. Not my idea of what ever the anon was complaining about but to each his own.
ReplyDeletea pass for the lead really should NOT be shown from a side camera: it calls for an overhead shot!
ReplyDeleteIt really is time for a full field rundown.
ReplyDeleteBoy that Gordon thing was an insight, eh?
ReplyDelete/sarcasm
one thing i've noticed is that when they do some sort of "thru the field," they talk too much about what they already covered in pre-race or earlier in the week (by their own admission) and so can't get deeper in the field than 7-10 spots.
ReplyDeletemaybe if they would stick to talking about what's happening on the track/in the pits, they could get deeper into the field.
Racing all over the track and we watch pre-taped comments from a Chaser running single-file. I'd sure like to hear from Jamie McMurray if he's behind the wall (can't tell since the scoring crawl has Chase standings on it instead of intervals). If David Ragan had made the Chase the cameras still wouldn't have left him. Instead we're left with zero information on him since he barely missed last week.

I think so - some of them are at the new drag strip.
Its hard to focus I got TV on low, PRN on radio , PitCommand, and blogging. Sounds like Doug, hasn't done the name thing in a while
Not sure who is leading the PRN gig today ...
ReplyDeleteBut, Disney sure came out of the commercial break FAST when Kyle wrecked ...
Mark Garrow and Doug on PRN
ReplyDeleteHis voice sounds ... weird ...
@ri88girl, I did look. It was pammh just below my post.
ReplyDeleteThe one good thing about KyB running in the back is that the other drivers will get some TV time.
JD ITS definitely Doug & Mark on PRN with Jim Noble.
ReplyDeleteRed, unfortunately, if the pit reporters couldn't use their pre-race notes, they would sound just like Dr. P in their through the field reports...
ReplyDelete"and there is the 88 car he is in first and behind him is the 48 car of Jimmie Johnson, he is in second, Shannon."
that would be all they had
red-
ReplyDeleteThat's what I mentioned last week. They waste time with what happened during the week, before the race, etc...
Doing a rundown just give information about the race, what is going on now.
Obviously the script called for throwing a bone to a few non-Chasers at lap 100 before returning to the "All Chasers and Logano, All the Time" format. Maybe we'll be "blessed" and the script will call for another brief non-Chaser shout-out at lap 200.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Speed was great yesterday and they didn't have to spend one cent on pre-recorded fluff clips.

Oh good its not just me thinking that
Well I'll try and throw a positive comment out there..
ReplyDeleteI like the new addition (?) to the ticker with the "Since restart" stats, who's moved up the most and dropped the most.
of all the problems i have with ESPN, here is one of the biggest...
ReplyDeleteJeff Gordon is making his way from 15th towards the top 10 and makes a pass on Kahne, then Harvick, and is setting his sights on Kenseth.
What we see is Kyle Busch getting lapped again by Dale Jr.
They don't show racing. They don't show passes. They focus on the drama. It's sad and it makes watching a race on TV less enjoyable.
I get excited over a pass that I see on FoxTrax instead.
DJ was saying something nice about Tony & #$%^ lost sound LOL
ReplyDeleteAnd they go to commercial while never mentioning Jimmie Johnson was reeling Jr. in. They even showed the 48 getting to about 4 car lengths back as they go to commercial.
ReplyDeleteWe will come back and see the 88 and the 48 in a heated battle for the lead and they will act like it's a surprise.
Meanwhile, and it might be just us fans, but I would think that Jeff Gordon passing Harvick and Kenseth would be worthy of showing, especially now that the Chase has begun. We missed that too!
Just a guess on the PRN thing but this is their first time at New Hampshire so they might not be used to the setup.
ReplyDeleteJo - Mark Garrow sounds fine ... Noble's voice sounds a little high ... But, Doug's voice sounds kinda altered ... Sorta loose ...
ReplyDeletePRN is definitely sounding "different" than MRN ...
FYI, the Kyle Busch channel is now the Stewart channel on HotPass
ReplyDeletehey jd? do you happen to know how they choose who to use for that "pit cam"? just curious about how the decision is made and why, once that person is introduced, we see very little from him.
ReplyDeleteBTW the Busch channel has switched to Stewart
ReplyDeleteJr had a tuff time getting past R Gordon, JJ up close on his back end & in comml. now no #$%^ for 30 sec!
ReplyDeleteDoc comes back w/ no enthusiasm
How many times can we hear them use the term "GUYS" ??
ReplyDeleteIt's annoying and even awkward when one of the Pit Chicks throws it back to the booth and Punch say's "Thanks Guys ".
Back to you GUYS
Thanks GUYS
GUYS look at this
Thats right GUYS
ETC......
And finally, so far this has been Pit Reporter overkill. This may be ESPN's way of getting away from Punch on the air.... they give most of the air time to the Pit people.
thats all....
BACK TO YOU GUYS !!
hey! starting at fifteenth spot for a thru the field! well all right then!
ReplyDeletehaus-
ReplyDeleteBeat me to it :)
Guess the don't have an in-car camera for Stewart
Thank you for the updates on these guys.
ReplyDeleteAm I hearing things? They're going thru the field with the odd wads?
ReplyDeleteThanks ESPN for the thru the field.
ReplyDeleteIt never ceases to amaze me that ESPN can get it right, like this latest through the field, but with in the same race can give us otherwise sh**ty coverage. Another example of the two face of ESPN coverage that JD was talking about. It truly is a wonderment.
ReplyDeleteThe officials are looking for debris in turn 2. Will we hear about this on the air?
ReplyDeleteYes, update from 15th to 28th.. I think they deserve a little more credit today..
ReplyDeleteI pull a sophia and go make brownies and come back to a through-the-field. Nice.
ReplyDeleteThe odd wads?? Love it! I'm shocked & pleased they went thru the field. But they still aren't showing any passing...(
ReplyDeleteMatt, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
ReplyDeleteOK graphics & sound about the 2009 chase!!!? During the 1st race of this years chase PUH LEEZ
ReplyDelete@haus20 LOL
ReplyDeletePRN needs to get a better mic for that one reporter that's out in one of the turns ... It sounds like he's got a mouth full of marbles in a wind storm ...
ReplyDeleteso, my signal's been freezing for a second every now and again -- stuttering; comcast outside philly.
ReplyDeleteanyone else having any issues?

ReplyDeleteNice job on the field recap. Amazing how many other stories are going-on in the field.
ReplyDeleteAnon 3:51PM, drop me an email when you get a chance.
ReplyDeleteWell you don't see other networks start a rundown from 15th. It shows that they're at least trying to make the effort.
ReplyDeletered - If you've got a cable box, you should try to do a power cycle on it ... turn it off & unplug it ... wait a minute or two ... then plug it back in & turn it back on ...
ReplyDeleteanon 3:54 -- copy that. thanks.
ReplyDeleteif they actually showed racing between spots 10-30 we wouldn't have to worry about field rundowns anyways.
ReplyDeletewe shouldn't be "surprised" when they tell us how a car is doing 150 laps into a race.
Smoke is really going to be smoked. Let's hear that radio convo now.
ReplyDeletePRN's analogies are cracking me up ...
ReplyDeleteThe speeding penalty for the 20 was "castor oil going down the gullet" .. .
Maybe Disney should pick of the PRN guys ...
and as soon as we get through pit stops and ESPN has a chance to reorganize and reset the field...commercial.
ReplyDeletei'll use other means to figure out what's happening in the race.
they are begging people to switch to NFL games in the final 2:00.
Dot, no response from smoke until after he completed the pass through, then he simply said, "sorry guys."
ReplyDeletematt,
ReplyDeleteSPEED did a truck race two weeks ago and started every full field rundown from 11th place.
They wanted to highlight the guys who were probably not going to be seen racing.
Since that time, we have seen ESPN do the same thing and experiment with where to start the rundown.
The problem was, if they started with 11th they could not get all the lead laps cars in quickly enough.
Moving the field recap back to 15th was a nice touch and exposed a lot of stories for the fans. It really worked.
JD
Thanks Haus. Sounds like he took my advice and kept radio talk to a minimum.

ReplyDeleteand as soon as we get through pit stops and ESPN has a chance to reorganize and reset the field...commercial."
agreed. this is exactly what puzzles me so much: the "natural" moment to reset the field and it never happens. i know commercials are important but so is figuring out who's where during the race!
Great coverage. One step forward and two back for showing the REPLAY of the lead change.
ReplyDeletesince Jeffy is forth in line for the lap back does this mean we will find out who the lucky dog is each time until he gets it?
ReplyDeleteI would like ESPN to concider the adding the race for the top 35 to be added to the 'script' as we head for Homestead.
my...we get about 8 laps and then more commercials and we still don't have any idea of who is where on the track other than the Top 4.
ReplyDeleteSeems like Punch is talking less in this race when I switch over to the ABC audio
ReplyDeleteri88, do you mean tony?
ReplyDeleteHaus...yes...and i don't know what happened to that last paragraph sorry all.
ReplyDeleteJD,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the correction.. I guess I was focusing on the Cup networks and forgot Speed did that.
i like the way dj starts an anecdote, stops to comment on what he's seeing on the screen and then picks his story right back up. very smoothly done.
ReplyDeleteSomeone said earlier that they thought the director was having the pit reporters talk more to fill for Doc, and I agree. I also agree that it didn't work, but I think it is better when Doc doesn't TRY to do the PXP and just adds in when it feels comfortable. When he talks less he is actually adding more IMO.
ReplyDeleteok, i really have no idea what that whole last piece on the #88 car and eury jr and hendrick on the box accomplished. maybe if they'd dropped some audio in or something? standing alone as it did just seemed . . . like a stretch.
ReplyDeletethey couldn't, Jr called the car a POS
ReplyDeleteThe best line in the race came from one of the PRN guys a little earlier ...
ReplyDelete"Kyle Busch just a little old lady in the left lane for Dale Earnhardt Jr"
These video packages are really really annoying
ReplyDeleteJunior was wearing the outfit he had on in NYC for media day on Wednesday. As Andy said, "I guess they did not catch up with him in the garage."
ReplyDeleteif this race keeps pace, looks like ABC could have 30-45 mins of post race fill, will be interesting to see how they handle it
ReplyDeleteWhat pressure on Jr. JP? He's out from under stepmom.

ReplyDeletethey couldn't, Jr called the car a POS
no surprise there!
so my question remains: why set the whole thing up if you weren't going to deliver a payoff? it just sorta fizzled out into nothing.
WHY? Why do they go to commercial right as the 48 gets on the bumper of the 16 for the race lead. That could be the pass for the win with 90 laps left!
ReplyDeleteAnd Doc gets excited for an OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS TV show promo to go to break without mentioning there could be a fight for the lead coming up.
I know they need commercials, but no other sport would go to break during important parts of a game.
Hey, no mention of Toast. Just because he's running in the back...And, back to comm'l we go. Hey, it's Toast & Smoke.
ReplyDeleteABC came out of that commercial FAST
ReplyDeleteRed,
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing, and I assume they had intended to use Tony Jr's respons which was the 'cheerleading' part of Doc's set up until they realized they couldn't because of Jr.
JD,
ReplyDeleteDoes TV have 'hard spots' like radio, or is more fluid?
In radio you have 'hard spots' at the to and bottom of the hour, 2 minutes either way.
boyd - tv does have "hard breaks" ... But, it seems like they vary depending on what network you're on ...

love it! you would think by now they'd know NOT to set anything up when it comes to dale's language during the race!
JD, I'll take Boyd's question. Yes, they do. Only they're called Tech Center and pre recorded driver interviews. And full screen graphics.
ReplyDeleteThanks anon 4:30
ReplyDeletehave we seen the pit cam guy yet today? since they're talking about brake dust, seems it would have been a good idea to set up to use his camera.
ReplyDeleteFuuny, JP referring to brakes. Thought he was talking about breaks, as in comm'ls.
ReplyDeleteJoe N got the call. Smoke back on the lead lap.
ReplyDeleteDot, we knew it was a tech center, JP wasn't excited.

Well I doubt we'll hear much about Lucky Dog now.
