Biffle Would Have Spun Stewart At Talladega

Greg Biffle had every single reason in the world to be cranky. Coming from the back to the front at Talladega with a powerful teammate pushing him through the field, Biffle wound-up watching the race finish instead of participating in it.

Host Steve Byrnes introduced Biffle and his fellow panelist Michael Waltrip. It was Monday night at 8PM and time for This Week in NASCAR on SPEED. Last week on the program Biffle sat with Chad Knaus and engaged in a serious and technical discussion of racing the COT. Tonight, Mikey was back and things would be different.

Byrnes waded into the brief segment at the top of the show where both drivers discuss their Sundays. Waltrip and Biffle were both caught-up in the same wreck, so the focus was on that incident.

"It's hard to really criticize somebody for trying to help you," said Biffle. "He (Edwards) did make a mistake and I don't know what else we can say about it." Biffle took the high road in explaining how easy it is to get turned in a corner while bump-drafting.

It was at this point that Byrnes raised the issue of the finish. Waltrip held the NASCAR line that Regan Smith went below the yellow line and the pass was not allowed. It was then when Byrnes turned to Biffle and a whole lot of emotion came out.

"I feel like Regan got robbed," said Biffle. He explained that Smith had gone to the high side first and gotten blocked by Tony Stewart. When Smith swerved to the low side and got a fender under Stewart, Biffle felt that Stewart had clearly forced Smith below the line. Biffle had strong words for NASCAR's ultimate decision.

"What he (Smith) needed to do was wreck Tony in front of the entire field," said Biffle. "Stay there and turn him (Stewart) sideways. Make him go flipping through the grass on his roof. That is the message they (NASCAR) are sending."

Byrnes let Biffle continue even as Waltrip tried to chime-in to no avail. Biffle was on a roll and the best was yet to come. "If I'm in that situation, I'm going to wreck him," he continued. "If NASCAR's not going to do what they say they are going to do by penalizing a guy for forcing (a driver) below the yellow line." Strong words from a Chaser and a Sprint Cup veteran.

Waltrip tried to be the peacemaker, but again agreed with NASCAR. Biffle asked Waltrip what he felt about someone being forced below the line on the final lap. Waltrip called for things to be more subjective on the last lap but agreed that Smith could have caused a big crash.

"I felt that NASCAR made that rule so we wouldn't have that wreck," said Biffle. His point was that Smith avoided the wreck by running under the line and believing that NASCAR would penalize Stewart for forcing him down there. This was the final strong statement from Biffle on the issue.

Just ten minutes of this show and TV viewers could already see how much this series has grown since it began from scratch in February. Byrnes let Biffle talk, Waltrip chimed-in with his opinions and no one minced words on what had become a tough topic in the sport.

TDP readers battled long and hard to get this show's format switched, and were rewarded in the middle of the season. Unfortunately, The Chase has changed all that. Just as Biffle and Waltrip were all warmed-up and ready for the highlights, fans had to meet one of The Chase drivers up-close-and-personal.

It was apparently a new driver who no one had ever heard of before. I think his name was Dale Earnhardt Jr. This feature was again two segments long and caused the panelists to sit on their hands while the momentum was sucked out of the show. Last week, the Chase feature was on Greg Biffle. He was actually sitting on the set and being introduced to himself.

The NASCAR Media Group has absolutely no TV shows on-the-air about The Chase. Nothing on ESPN, SPEED, TNT, or Fox. The failure of NASCAR's own TV company to get additional programming like The Chase is On, NASCAR Confidential or a Chase highlights show placed on the NASCAR TV partners speaks volumes about the priorities of those networks.

Byrnes jumped-in and tried to bring the show back to life with the Talladega highlights. Tires were an issue, but Waltrip was quick to defend Goodyear and basically said those drivers probably ran over something. Waltrip had his owner's hat on and was in full Goodyear defense.

The discussion about the DEI teammates not pulling out and passing Stewart brought up an interesting point. It was the opinion of the veteran panelists that the DEI guys could not figure out how to slow down to let a gap develop and then "make a run" at Stewart. Going slower might have ultimately meant winning the race.

In discussing the recent test session at Charlotte, Waltrip passed along the info that his team learned some things at Charlotte they have used at other tracks. In Waltrip's opinion, it was really a COT Chase test. Biffle agreed as did many others who had called for more COT in-season tests.

Humpy Wheeler's opinion piece was a monologue on the evolution of the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Wheeler talked about some of the things that he and Bruton Smith brought to the Speedway and motorsports in general. Lighting the track for night racing was very important when it happened. Wheeler's point was that the real attraction of LMS was never knowing what was going to happen or who was going to win. Somethings never change.

This episode of TWIN contained some good discussions during the review portions, another misplaced Chaser feature and a good preview of the night race at Charlotte. Along the way Greg Biffle finally put his foot down and let his emotions show on an issue he felt strongly about. It is a shame that TWIN will not add a third panelist during the Chase, because the only way this show could have been better is if Chad Knaus was on the panel and in the conversations.

  1. love Greg being so honest.

HATE the Chase segment being two segment

I love Jr but if TWIN MUST do this, DO IT LATER IN THE SHOW.

TO FORCE this at the beginning is back to the early flip flop show...different variation on a theme.

LET THE BOY's talke while revved up.

  2. I agree 100% with Greg Biffle. I wish I hadn't missed the show, that would have been nice to see firsthand.

  4. Another great show... except for that chase segment.... do it on one of the Nascar live sections overr the weekend, do it on trackside...anywhere but in the middle of the TWIN.... Its a HUGE waste of time...I'd much rather see the boys talk....
Was nice to see Greg fired up about something... don't see that often... and Mikey.... was Mikey...you either love him or hate him... I happen to REALLY enjoy him... loved the Six degrees of Michael Waltrip blog the other day... guess when you are in the top 10 in starts made in Nascar you have lots of connections.... Just think how terrible those weeks will be when they are trying to squeeze two chase segments into one show.... since they have twelve drivers in 10 weeks, might as well give the boys the night off... that would make me sad...

  5. Enjoyed the show, and Biffs comments. As most of you have stated Steve has so many segments he has to get to,it really butchers up the show. I watched the show for 10 years, and all the changes.
JD, do you know if they still tape this at 11AM? I like Steve, but don't know if he has time, or has not seen the comments by Nascar's Jim Hunter, or the Goodyear guy. I know the drivers may not watch all the post race shows, but thats where the comments were made about the finish, and the tires.
Mikey kept saying he did not think RS could see the checkerd flag, and Hunter said it did not matter, even on the last lap. He also said it did not appear that he was forced down in their opinion. Goodyear said, it appeared they were running to high air pressure in the tires.
My point is, since we had no postrace from ESPN, Steve needed to bring up these things during the show. Maybe he knows if its not in NASCARS favor, Mikey will not listen, and get on his on agenda.

  6. Ha, I started a discussion on thehotpass.com today about the same thing. Experience won the race for Tony. He know Smith would Blink. I asserted that if the 7,29 or 42 were behind we Paul Menard may have won his first race.

Thanks for your feed. You're soon to be famous on THP

  7. Great show tonight. Biffle was as gracious to Carl as he could be, but you could tell he was ticked off. That's the most forceful I've seen Greg on this show, even shutting down MW several times (which is tough to do.)

Me? I think that baloney about tire pressures was bogus. After seeing what happened in practice, do you think any of the drivers would take a chance like that?

I think Ray Evernham's explanation of smaller tires made a lot of sense. He's the expert.

Oh, and Jr's segment was actually pretty interesting with TJ, just misplaced as JD said.

  8. I appreciated Biffle's candor last night. I like Mikey, but he came across as being politically correct. The Junior segments definetly made the show choppy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. As long as that huckster "Mikey" is allowed on this show it will never reach its full potential. He kisses NASCAR's rear and they return the favor (ala the coverup on the substance in his Toyota at Daytona when he first appeared as a team owner.)

  10. The finish of the Talledega race is a non issue . A driver cannot improve his position by passing below the yellow line . The reason he is below the yellow line has nothing to do with him deciding to go ahead and make the pass . The rule has been in place for years . If Smith wasn't aware of the rule , whos fault is that . Smith made the wrong decision at the end . He should have gone to the outside where his team mate would have pushed him to the front .

Could Biffle be any bigger moron ? " I'd wreck him " says Biffle in his best hayseed drawl . Wrecking other drivers to get in MASCARS face ? Now that sounds like a good idea . And as Stewart is the only driver in the history of NASCAR to try to block a competitor on the last lap i can certainly understand Biffles' outrage . Since he's rarely close enough to the front to see how a last lap strategy is played out , i guess he might be confused about the details .

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow, anon, way to call out Biffle for not being near the front of a race...he just WON two straight races and finished third before Talladega! C'mon!

It's exactly like Biffle and others have said; if the rule allows a driver to block someone below the line to gain an unfair advantage and the blocked driver just has to "accept" it, then the next time it happens the driver will just have to wreck the leader and see what happens if they have any chance of winning.

    ReplyDelete

That other well-known hayseed, Jeff Gordon, said exactly the same thing on Wind Tunnel Sunday night.

  14. I am glad to see Biffel coming into his own and it take a lot ot shut Mikey I am a know it all up and I for one and glad that he did it.
I am one of those who cannot stand to hear Michael open his mouth. He is not the authroity that he thinks he is and I wouild loved to have seen Chad Knauss in the middle of that one too and I ahve to agree that the thing about too much tire pressure is a load of crap.

  15. I am now a Biffle fan. He was right on all counts. Biffle for President.

As usual, Waltrip was just a "tool" for NASCAR. He might as well be on ISC's board of directors.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like seeing Greg Biffle this way. He was right, RS did everything right in that situation. NASCAR goofed up when they allowed the truck series drivers to go below the yellow line back in Daytona 2007 and not let the Cup cars do the same at Dega this past weekend. It robbed the fans of an actual finish that would have been one for the ages.

As for Michael Waltrip, he has sold his soul to NASCAR obviously. Has he ever disagreed with them? NASCAR and Goodyear could never possibly be wrong. *rolls eyes*

    ReplyDelete
  17. Seems like the only people that don't see a conflict here are Stewart fans.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I thought it was a great discussion between Greg and Michael, which likely wouldn't have been anywhere near as good if Michael hadn't taken a somewhat different view of things than Greg. I don't particularly like the way Nascar handled things on Sunday since there seemed to be confusion within Nascar about what the rule actually was but the fact is that like it or not Nascar does have rules regarding going below the yellow line that they enforced on Sunday. Just because Michael says things that fans don't like hearing doesn't mean that he doesn't know what he's talking about, after all he's a been racing Cup for nearly 25 years and he's an owner besides. He has the right to his own opinions and to defend Nascar if he so choses - I think it's a good thing particularly when there's controversies like this that there's someone who is willing to explain what Nascar's thinking might be so all sides are presented.

  19. What is wrong with having somoone who agrees with NASCAR on the show?

I know it is popular to bash NASCAR these days, but not everyone feels that way.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just once I want to hear Waltrip say NASCAR was wrong! As it is now, he comes off as a suck up

    ReplyDelete
  21. There was no confusion whatsoever on the part of NASCAR . The race was awarded to Stewart . The very second that the nose of Smiths car edged in front of Stewart , the race was over for Smith . The only confusion about this is from the fans . And the fact that Johnson says the drivers thought that move might be legal based on something that might possibly have been said by an announcer on the truck race !!! What !!!! There is a rule book Jimmy . Every NASCAR driver has one . TV announcers don't make the rules .

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just once I want to hear Waltrip say NASCAR was wrong! As it is now, he comes off as a suck up

So you want him to change what he believes to be true just to suit you?

    I hope he doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  23. And the fact that Johnson says the drivers thought that move might be legal based on something that might possibly have been said by an announcer on the truck race !!! What !!!! There is a rule book Jimmy .
Actually, he was quoting NASCAR official Ramsey Poston, who, explaining the lack of a penalty in that truck race, said, "When the drivers can see the checkered flag, you can get all you can get."

That's hardly the opinion of an "announcer."

    ReplyDelete
  24. I might be guessing here but it seems all of these Mikey bashers have the ability to compete at the cup level therefore their opinions are to be taken seriously. The conversations/debates on TWIN are what make this show extremely interesting & if any of the panelists were to always agree with each other or always agree/disagree with whatever ruling NASCAR determines then this blog would not exist since the show would probably be cancelled.

Wondering what the show's ratings would be without MW ??

    ReplyDelete
  25. Last week without MW was a pleasure to watch. This week MW goes off again to totally support NASCAR, seems to get old, and I for one am tired of his PC bull%$# TWIN needs to rotate a few more people in to add other ideas and views

    ReplyDelete
  26. Of course Biffle and Johnson don't think that Stewart should have won. They are both competing against Stewart in the Chase and have a vested interest in Stewart not winning the race.

On Wind Tunnel, Jeff Gordon even stated that the rule was clear: you can not advance your position if you race below the yellow line.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is what Jeff Hammond had to say about the finish:

"The way NASCAR called the end of the race on Sunday should have been the way it was called. Regardless of what Mr. Regan Smith thinks, the rule was not designed that way.

Stewart did not do anything to warrant him to be forced down below the yellow line. Sure, he threw a block on him, but he eased up off the line a little bit and gave him the room.

The way I saw it was the right call by NASCAR. The only thing I regret about it was Regan thinking he had the right-away, giving up a second-place finish by doing so. He went below the line and stayed down there. He hung his hopes totally on his belief that Stewart forced him down there. He clearly was not beside Stewart when he went below the yellow line."

    ReplyDelete
  28. The only way Waltrip could come off poorly in this case is if Biffle agreed with him. Then there would be no argument and just a discussion that agrees with Nascar.

Waltrip agreed with the call made by Nascar. Biffle didn't agree with it. Stewart agrees with Nascar and Waltrip, while Regan Smith agrees with Biffle and he lost.

This isn't like the Brickyard where everything could be aimed at Nascar. Defending that is one thing.

But in this case, since Biffle disagreed with Waltrip, it made for a great show. At least the first part of it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The Mike/Biff dynamic was terrific television. Biffle's passion won me over, and Mikey's take on the other side of the issue, one that Biffle continued to pick at, kept us glued to the TV. When the bit about Junior's spotter came on, I headed to the kitchen to finish the dishes and my beloved went back to work on a project. We couldn't believe they'd cut off such a powerful, honest discussion in midstream.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anon at 10:45am: That opinion isn't strong. Johnson should actually be happier with this result because Smith fell to 18th and Johnson gained a spot and 5 points on Biffle and Edwards.

I don't think many are worried about the extra 15 points Stewart got to get back to within 200-something out of the top spot.

  32. To all of the Mikey bashers,

As I have stated before, I remember reading several books and watched as many historical shows on Nascar's beginning and on more than one occasion big name drivers were brought into the hauler or the France's office and told that Nascar can go on without you but you need Nascar more than we need you. Going on that logic, Mikey is in that bridge/gap that remembers that time period but also is in the new time period.

I hope that the above makes sense.

I love MW but do think that Greg learned how to stand his ground.

I really wish that the powers that be would let the boys just talk and discuss/debate.

  36. It's very simple. Apparently the "forced down" rule is stated to keep in the back pocket just in case JR uses the yellow line at Talladega (as was the ruling in 2003 or 2004 Aarons 499, cant remember the year). Otherwise, you are not allowed to pass under the yellow line under any circumstance.

If you ask me, they should either just say DO NOT PASS UNDER THE YELLOW OR YOU WILL BE BLACK FLAGGED....and end it there. Or, if they keep also stating in Drivers Meetings - IF YOU FORCE SOMEONE BELOW THE YELLOW LINE YOU WILL BE BLACK FLAGGED ALSO, then ENFORCE THE RULE.

Regan Smith was forced below the yellow. It was obvious. He went high, Tony blocked high. He went low, Tony took him to the apron. Regan used the apron as he had the momentum, and had two choices: "Use the apron and race clean to the stripe" or "Wreck us both and take out how knows many more in the field".

The yellow line rule was created for Driver Safety. HOW does making your drivers believe that you have to WRECK endorse DRIVER SAFETY? Answer, IT DOESN'T.

  38. JUST ONCE I'd like to hear Mikey disagree with NASCAR or Goodyear, but I doubt that will ever happen.

The Biff truly impressed me last night. Way to stick up for what you believe, and BTW I agree with him.

While Junior is my favorite driver, I must admit the segments were out of place, but it was cool finding out how he met his spotter.

Also, wasn't there a truck race last Saturday? You never would have known by watching TWIN.

  39. I also agree with Biffle, an old timer like "STEWART" would have held his line and wrecked whom ever was in front of him. As for "mikey" him on the show is a placement by NA$CAR. He was always just Darrell's little brother till he started driving for the most dominate team on Superspeedway tracks (DEI) has never won on any other track and never will. So I agree with all those that think he ditracts from the show.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ive always felt that the Biff has been the most stand up guy in nascar! He would be the kind of friend you would want in any tough situation!! The Biff stood up for Kenseth when Edwards came after him with a closed fist! No body else wanted to talk about it!!The Bottom Line here is that everyone involved (Except Greg Biffle)are afraid of both (Nascar) and (Tony Stewart)!!! Notice how Greg did not throw Edwards under the bus for spining him!He sees things for what they are..As a fellow Washington State native,I am proud of the Biff!! Lesley..Everett,Wa

    ReplyDelete
  41. I too am proud of "The Biff" for standing up and saying what was on his mind. But, remember what happens to those who state their minds, they're called to the NA$CAR carpet and given the gag order.

You don't hear any of the drivers putting down the COT anymore, do you?

    ReplyDelete
  42. About time someone spoke up about the finish! Way to go Greg! Greg speaks his mind and has a respectable opinion as a modern race winner.

(I think he was the only one on TV Monday that represented the true voice of the fans.)

I get very annoyed with Waltrip and Spencer on SPEED, as both seem to support NASCAR in every single decision and put on this "act" that NASCAR is so powerful and can do no wrong.

  44. This NA$CAR decision makes future races more dangerous. Next time a racer is forced below the yellow line on the last lap, they won't go and a hugh wreck will unfold. If you get punished for dripping below the yellow line regardless of the reason, logic tells me that the forced driver will hold their ground and what happens, happens.

    ReplyDelete

    Found in a 10-01-08 draft of NASCAR's 2009 Rulebook:
"If a Chase contender is in the first five positions at the end of any race, and especially if in the lead, any judgment call will go in their favor."
Evidently they just wanted to try it out ONE MORE TIME before they approved publishing it ...

If he's unable to give honest opinions, even if it goes against Nascar, and then back those opinions up with facts, then maybe it's time to bring someone on who's not shaking in their boots over the thought of criticizing Nascar. At least Biffle has the guts to express his opinions without fear of retribution. I've defended Mikey before, but his schtick is getting old.

  66. If you want to hear the truth about the races & how a good portion of the fans feels ...

Listen carefully to Biffle and Schrader ... Burton does it too ... But, these guys sometimes talk in code ...

And I've been saying this for years ...

Mikey's right to defend Goodyear ... since the ARCA race on Friday had problems with their Hoosier tires as every caution was caused by a tire problem ... The Trucks only had 2 tire problems ...

The real questions should be: What happened to NO blocking?? What happened to black flagging a driver if he forced another one below the yellow line??

NASCAR's only consistency has been their inconsistency when it comes to enforcing the rules and handing out penalties ...

The yellow line rule has been fuzzy at least 3 times since Feb 07 ... And ALL three times, it has benefitted toyota ...

Biff & Jeffy are right ... Nascar has forced the drivers to wreck people IF they don't want to be forced below the yellow line ...

Just wait til Speedweeks and the Daytona 500 ... It's gonna be U-G-L-Y ...

TWIN needs to go back to the 90 minute show format ... That way they can focus on all 3 series as well as all of the extra junk ... And throw in a "hot seat" guest or two that's on-set as opposed to pre-taped interviews from the shops ...

  67. Let me see? What other sport (If you want to call It that)Decides what the outcome should be!!!If you said the WWF you would be are winner!!! The only reason Nascar gave tony the victory was simple!!They didnt want to have to deal with him!!!Why are other drivers and the like agreeing with nascar??They also dont want to deal with him..(with the acception of the Biff)Drivers are sending a message to both Nascar and Tony Stewart That they are indeed afaid of both of them!! Its all very very sad

  68. I wish I could have seen Biffle lay it out on National Television. I've always been a fan of this guy, both on the track and how he conducts himself in interviews. He's always been a straight-up racer who's never afraid to speak his mind. I'm glad he finally broke through and won a race recently.

Also, is anyone actually surprised that Michael Waltrip chose the "politically correct" route and defended NASCAR? I've seen plenty of Monday-Night broadcasts with Waltrip on the panel and he sides with NASCAR on pretty much every controversial call. Almost to the point of being a "Yes -Man" for NASCAR. So it comes as no surprise to me. Personally I was not able to see the race finish, so I can't comment as to whether the call by NASCAR was correct or not.

  69. TDP headlined:

I write: I would spin my mother, grandmother, great aunt or Earnhardt, Jr. to win at Talledega.
So would Jimmy Spencer and you gotta love him for that. In fact, the first big league NASCAR race I went to was the Mountain Dew 200 in Hickory where Jimmy Spencer spun Dale Jarrett to win. I thought then, oh, so that's how it's done. I can do that. And I would.
So that makes me one with Teh Biff, huh!
