The Nationwide Series Limps Home
Luckily, the media still have two Sprint Cup stars to interview when it comes to the Nationwide Series. The TV networks still like to mention young Brad Keselowski, but when it comes to "big time TV" the stars are Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer.
The fundamentally wrong things with this racing series continue to be fundamentally wrong. The TV ratings again reflect the fact that the Nationwide Series has absolutely no identity of its own. Without the Sprint Cup cross-overs, the perception is that there is no excitement.
Well, this goes against everything that is fundamentally good with the series when it races far away from the Sprint Cup locations and gets to showcase itself. The stand-alone Nationwide Series races finally get back to the fun competition and qualifying that the series desperately needs.
ESPN handles the races, but SPEED often handles the practice and qualifying sessions like this weekend at Homestead. Incredibly, ESPN immediately drops the mention of the televised sessions from the ESPN2 NASCAR Now program if they are not ESPN-produced.
This week, even though it was the final racing weekend of the season, none of the Nationwide Series Friday and Saturday practice and qualifying sessions were promoted on NASCAR Now. Meanwhile, SPEED promotes all of the ESPN2 and ABC coverage of the sport regardless of the series or network.
Without a viable TV partner who will put NASCAR ahead of the network's own special interests, the Nationwide Series will continue to flounder. ESPN originates no Nationwide Series weekly or monthly TV shows. The largest percentage of pre-race interviews are with Sprint Cup Series cross-over drivers. Once college football begins, the Nationwide Series becomes an afterthought. It has been made clear once again this season that the Nationwide Series on ESPN2 is just not working.
Once again it will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree who will call the action from Homestead. Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center.
It will be Allen Bestwick that leads-off the Nationwide telecast at 4PM Eastern Time with NASCAR Countdown. Bestwick will be joined by his regular team of Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. This week Ray Evernham will also join the infield panel.
Many of the races have been quite enjoyable on ESPN2, as the pressure and formality of the ESPN Sprint Cup broadcasts seems to be set aside. The announcers are clearly without the "Sunday pressure" of the big races and the mood is much lighter.
Great pictures come from Homestead, especially with no grandstands anywhere but the frontstretch. The HD in-car cameras are gorgeous and the banking of the track should make for some great side-by-side pictures. While the audio is not spectacular from this venue, the races off pit road should be fun to both watch and hear.
This is the track that has the jet ski's in the infield, farm land all around and absolutely no shade for the fans to be found. One interesting feature of the original track that remains is the "Le Mans" style pit road balconies that reflect the original design of the facility for sports car and motorcycle racing. TV viewers should also be able to see the interior road course layout.

Looks like the football game is dragging over into Cup Happy Hour. On the plus side, I'm watching ESPN2 anyway, since I'm a Michigan fan, and have a recording set for Classic in case the first part of practice is bumped.
ReplyDeleteWow programming at espn2 is as usual - football runs late.
ReplyDeleteHey, I have an idea: Why don't they move the football game to ESPN Classic?
ReplyDeleteAfter all, that's good enough for NASCAR fans.
Good one Anon
ReplyDeleteWhy don't we try showing the cars on the track instead of 3 guys, spake, & Mike. Nice people I'm sure but since practice started 15 mins ago why not get us up to speed? ( pun intended) Not junk.
ReplyDeleteWhy was I hoping for better today?
One of the great things about the Truck race and championship is that both the race and the champ were Truck racers not Truckwackers.
ReplyDeleteSwitch over to Busch and what do you get, just Cup guys with their Cup teams dominating the Nationwide guys. Not interesting.
Yup I really hope a N'wide regular wins not a Claim jumper.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be too boring.
Wow, what a terrible location for the Infield Studio.
ReplyDeleteEvernham??? Then I'm off to do laundry and grocery shop. I'll check with the Fox leaderboard to see how Ambrose does, but I won't watch.
ReplyDeleteWho's keeping count of "points as they run"?
ReplyDeleteThat is a bad place for the studio.
They did mention the trucks, now that it's over.
nan,
ReplyDeleteGet ready, you are going to see a lot more of him next season.
You might have to take up tennis.
JD
JD you mentioned ESPN does not mention NASCAR programing that they do not show, and SPEED mentions all programing, easy SPEED cares about the sport, the fans, the drivers and all involved ESPN cares about ESPN.
ReplyDelete3bud,
ReplyDeleteIts all about the management, not the announcers on that topic.
I beat them up regularly, but I do not sign those paychecks.
JD
How sad is it that College football has a better written contract than NASCAR. They can bleed over into Cup HH and HH is shown late. Do you think it's because of the betting on football games? That's my thought.
ReplyDeleteI'm bailing on the pre-race, it's useless. Flip over to football until the green flag drops
ReplyDeleteJr going for the ESad look.
ReplyDeletebevo!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to miss the music videos and the obvious questions!
Last change to be bored to tears!
Just a thought - all this pre race hype basically 45 mins if green flag is at 4:45. Isn't it odd we got more real info from Speeds "little" 30 min pre race show?
ReplyDeletejo,
ReplyDeleteAnother reason it would make some sense to put Jerry downstairs and get AB in the booth.
Let Jerry do what he does best...report and anchor.
JD, I figured it is a management thing ,they show over and over just how little they care and what NASCAR actually means to them. I imagine when it comes to promoting anything the announcers can only say what they have been told to say.
ReplyDeleteThe studio location is pretty bad. Too bad thats where Nascar put them.
ReplyDeleteGeez, Tim, if your "expertise" is limited to telling us that the the wheels need all five lug nuts before the driver leaves the pits, maybe you need a new assignment.

Maybe its NA$CAR$ revenge for lousy coverage.
JD I respectfully beg to differ with you one 1 little point. The Cup race tomorrow is our last chance to be bored to tears for the season.
I think its 90 days till Daytona & Fox!
How sad is it that College football has a better written contract than NASCAR. They can bleed over into Cup HH and HH is shown late. Do you think it's because of the betting on football games? That's my thought.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so.
I think this is the year we learned that NASCAR didn't negotiate a very good TV contract with ABC/ESPN, because it left out "little" things like start time guarantees, live coverage of practices, and guarantee that all races would be carried live in their entiety on the network specified.
These are all things the NFL, for example, knows to include in the TV contract.
Question is, did NASCAR just not think of these things, or did it cave when ABC said, "No" to them?
@nan--yup...unless they change it and make it to where only a FT N'wide driver can win it, I don't know if we'll ever have a true N'wide driver win. Heck, even missing what 5 races Kylie is killing the N'wide drivers points wise due to his wins and finishes. The only FT N'wide only drivers ahead of him are Brad in 3rd and Mike Bliss in 5th. Kylie going into the race is in 6th, 343 behind Brad, 115 behind Bliss and 296 ahead of the next FT N'wide driver Mike Wallace who is 8th.
ReplyDelete@dot--I was thinking the same about Jr's beard there...someones ready for vay cay *giggle*. I remember back in 2K3 DW showed up on a Trackside during the second half. He joked how it took him the whole time (between his last Trackside that season until his appearance) to grow his beard and Jr. just a few days. Jr. was clean shaven on Sunday and then a few days later had a full grown beard.
Good one JD!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately football isn't much better right now, Florida 21 S Carolina 0 end of the 1st quarter :)
It's going to be the Clint & Carl show today. NW only drivers? What NW only drivers?

Yup It seems like its gonna be all Clint & Carl all race, no matter what. I really hope Brad K or any other Nwide regular wins today.
I'm glad this will be the last time (this year) I hear Rusty say - he's driving his brains out. JD, I agree fully with your assessment of the series - there are former champs sitting at home while we have too many cup guys in the race. And besides BK, the full time drivers hardly get any notice and I bet today's race will be the same. Too bad. Looking forward to the Grand Am 24 Hours Rolex race from Daytona next year. That's good racin'! And I wonder if TB will be in the tech center next year too.
ReplyDeleteBevo,
ReplyDeleteHere in South Florida, that is not so bad.
It's gonna be interesting to see how hot the track is. I wish we had that technology like they do on Fox and TNT.
The track temp is going to be key to this whole deal as the afternoon goes on.
JD
That was a real good command, those old V8'sounded real good in surround sound.
ReplyDeleteVicky,
ReplyDeleteNASCAR hit a homerun when they bought the Grand-Am Series.
They have a lot of PO'ed former IRL guys and some former "NASCAR rookies" who are going to be in the line-up next season.
Can you imagine Paul Tracy, Kyle Petty and guys like Scott Pruett mixing it up all season long?
The good news is the entire series is going to be live on SPEED in 2009.
JD
Just as long as the Gators stay behind the Horns :)
ReplyDeleteBTW anyone notice that the url for FoxTrax is still busch??
JD,
ReplyDeleteJust got back from the grocery store and can see the big plumes of smoke in the distance as Southern California is on fire again. My good hopes for those people.
As to Evernham and ESPN next year, I am fully ready to give up watching those races. I've been a motorsport fan for many, many years and have seen F1, Cart, Champcar, A1GP, Nascar and GrandAm races live. I only really started watching a lot of Nascar 3 years ago with the entry of Ambrose and Montoya. While I am still a fan of those men, I will watch the highlights on Speed or the inter-net and save myself many hours of TV watching. None of those sponsors will see my eyes because I will not watch a telecast with Evernham.
As for tennis, the year end championship is going on right now, so I will watch that instead.
Besides JD you know that the best part about Nascar is your website and I can still read that ;)
How lame does it look that the guy in second trying to pull off a miracle to win the Sprint Cup title is also looking for the same thing in the minor league/Nationwide series.
ReplyDeleteReally takes the steam out of things going into this one.
Does ESPN have to make Carl Edwards the in-car camera for both the Saturday AND Sunday races?
ReplyDeleteDo you guysreally think ESPN is that bad? I guess I dont sit and watch the races to find what is wrong. I watch to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but these announcers AND I MEAN ALL THREE must have not watched the truck race last night. When you watch a race at Homestead you know how the top and bottom work, and these guys thought Edwards was going to lead because he was "even" with Logano in a turn.
ReplyDeleteUgh - they got one lap in and sent it to a pit reporter.
ReplyDeleteNice play-by-play. Imagine that in any other sport.
What's the equivalent? After the first down run in football? After the first batter in baseball? After the first basket in Bbball? Awful.
Good decision to dump out on the in-car with the sun blasting in
ReplyDeleteTodd Bodine, a start-and-park? Say it ain't so!
ReplyDeleteUmm - anon at 4:50pm - I'd like to watch to enjoy, but unfortunately ESPN does not allow that at all.
ReplyDeleteHow ANYONE could enjoy this coverage is beyond me.
8 laps - LETS GO TO COMMERCIAL!!!
WHAT?????
Glad someone at least enjoys the coverage out there I guess.
Do you guysreally think ESPN is that bad? I guess I dont sit and watch the races to find what is wrong. I watch to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteTough to enjoy when Doc is so bad and the shot we get is ferquently of a car's bumper.
BTW. Watched Talladega Nights the other day and even that showed how much better FOX is with their coverage than the drivel we keep getting with ESPN. It's less than 10 laps in a proving to be a Bowyer-Edwards joke....with most of the coverage focused on Edwards if you didn't notice...the one who will LOSE to Bowyer!
ReplyDeleteTodd Bodine is in a Phil Parsons car, it's good to have friends in high places
ReplyDeletebumper cam, in-car cam with Edwards, commercials.
ReplyDeleteWash, repeat, rinse
Is there a driver on the track who isn't a "young man" to Punch?
ReplyDeleteKeep an eye on that ticker to see who is off...
ReplyDeletePunch is like DW. When they get tired, they get emotional and start to use catch phrases.
ReplyDeleteEven Mark Martin was a "young man from Batesville, Arkansas."
Did I mention this was the last race of the season?
Ugh - they got one lap in and sent it to a pit reporter.
ReplyDeleteNice play-by-play. Imagine that in any other sport.
What's the equivalent? After the first down run in football? After the first batter in baseball? After the first basket in Bbball? Awful.
How can you guys whine about them only covering the leaders, and then compare them to any other sport? Do you think your almighty fox will talk about all the teams that aren't contending for the BCS title this January?
6 off at lap 22.....that will get your attention.
ReplyDeleteBurton out front. Where's the Kim cam?
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that the in-race reporter seems to always be the same couple of racers all the time? Is it enough of a nuisance to the teams that just a few guys will agree to participate?
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:01PM,
ReplyDeleteNASCAR spoken here please...thanks!
afternoon everybody,
ReplyDeletenot sure how long I will last for this race..the focus on Carl and Clint is annoying...and as somebody said, the second guy in CUP trying to win the NW series....it does take the steam out of things....after the WONDERFUL storyline in the truck race, that was NO SCRIPTED nor hammered home to us, it's tough to take ESPN after SPEED.
I did not watch any pre race or stuff on ESPN today.
Hope a NW guy wins the race.
JD re: Grand Am series. There's owner/driver from Houston, Tracy Krohn, who we watch and want his two teams to do well, along enjoying watching the series so much. And he's close to 55 but still having a ball driving.
ReplyDeleteHow can you guys whine about them only covering the leaders, and then compare them to any other sport? Do you think your almighty fox will talk about all the teams that aren't contending for the BCS title this January?
ReplyDeleteNo, but they won't all be in the game, either. That's the difference. Anyone can win this race today, not just the top two or there in points.
The two sports are different, asnd that is what ESPN just won't recognize.
I normally just set here and refresh to read everything as I watch the race. But I have to say something....Please, Please, don't switch to the Kim cam....
ReplyDeleteMy god the BCS will show the games of the teams being shown on their network. Regardless of it's Hawaii getting blown out by Georgia, the top two teams playing, or whoever else is in the games they show.
ReplyDeleteESPN, they have 43 drivers in their race coverage and show about 4 of them. The Top 2 and Edwards and Bowyer.
This isn't a sport where there is head-to-head matchups. Once you get that, you'll maybe post differently.
Or maybe not post on a Nascar TV site if you're not a fan.
I have to believe that owners will eventually force nascar to franchises. To have 6 cars go off and take the money away from the others is ridiculous. This economy could be what forces the franchising
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that the in-race reporter seems to always be the same couple of racers all the time? Is it enough of a nuisance to the teams that just a few guys will agree to participate?
ReplyDeleteHave you heard these drivers speak? It's hard to find someone who can put a sentence together with out a piddle dang filter so the audience can understand.

ReplyDeleteEnough with the points updates. Let's watch the WHOLE race I mean even a car in the 15th position.
ReplyDeleteJust ignore them.
ReplyDeleteIts pretty sad in this sport when guys can go from the "majors" and step down in the "minors". Doesnt leave much of a chance for new guys to come in.
ReplyDeleteGuys, the more you play the more the trolls love it. Relax and enjoy the race, the world is full of all kinds of people.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe ESPN just showed Edwards making a pass for the lead. Are the going to show him driving good all day. I want to see the action in the back of the pack. I think there was a pass for 34 place and we missed it. This sucks. All ESPN is showing is the action up front.
ReplyDeleteI didn't join the race until green flag. Can anyone tell me if Bobby Hamilton Jr has a sponsor on the hood? A few races ago, he was funding the team out of his pocket. Would be nice to mention, to see if he has plans for next year.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, JB will be on a NASCAR teleconference early next week so I will get to ask him some questions.
ReplyDeleteThey were not able to get him for TWIN this Monday.

ReplyDeleteBummer JD I would have loved for JB to be on TWIN is he on NN instead?
ReplyDeleteNN is just Ray and Rusty with AB.
ReplyDeleteNo clue why there is not a third.
You can show Edwards making a pass. Yes that is good coverage. But showing him ttetering between 3rd and 4th and back to 3rd isn't important when he's racing by himself when they could be showing a bunch of other drivers and how they are faring.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Johnny Benson won't be on TWIN. We'll probably see and hear a lot of Michael then. I guess the reason ESPN isn't showing 15th spot is because it's not a cup guy. I haven't seen much of Jr. either today.
ReplyDeleteJD it's end of season they are all running away from racing as fast as they can. For a week or 2 anyway.
ReplyDeleteI was responding to an earlier post, and I would love if they eliminated drivers as they are out of contention..... Where can I make that suggestion to Nascar?
ReplyDeleteIt's been made, oh, only about a million times. This is how NASCAR wants the races.
They might be lucky to have 50,000 in the stands today
ReplyDeletewe may be 100 laps in (halfway) with 10 or less on the lead lap.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't look good for ESPN's hope for a miracle win for Edwards tomorrow if there are absolutely NO WRECKS at Homestead.
I think I'm the only one watching this race to see who wins the championship
ReplyDeleteAnybody watching the computer stats? How many are out?
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame that Johnny B. won't be on TWIN. I remember when he finally had his Trophy Day on IWC.
ReplyDeleteUhhh I wanna see who wins the championship.
ReplyDeleteAnd also the race. Just call it. We can all figure out who will win without showing two cars in close-ups racing by themselves around Homestead.
When you watch the Truck race last night and see how it's done - this is the opposite of that.
6 cars out right now
ReplyDeleteJD - 6 cars out
ReplyDeleteJD same 6 out maybe 7
ReplyDeletepit crew guy sounds awesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteOoh now because they are tied for 30 seconds Punch breaks out how Edwards has the tiebreaker.
ReplyDeleteHe knows that, but now who is in the 66 or the 47 or the 25 or the ....
Nice helmet camera on the pit crew. I love that stuff.

ReplyDeleteCaution.
ReplyDeleteWonder why that pit cam cannot be done live? Have we seen that this season? Those guys have been great.
ReplyDeleteWe all owe a tip of the hat to good old DJ Copp. He really put those guys on the map this season.
commercial= caution
ReplyDeleteHow do they get the microphone on the pit crew guys? Is that his radio? or do they have one of those dish microphones like football?
ReplyDeleteCautions out!
ReplyDeleteok..I think I am SO DONE with ESPN.
ReplyDeleteWhat good is side by side IN CAR CAMS looking at the drivers filling the tv screen.
sigh.
We are going to put up Christmas ornaments, get out the train and fix dinner...might keep on ESPN just for "NOISE" factor...truly not worth investing one's time in.
Sad.

ReplyDeleteESPN. Nope.
Anyone else having problems with FoxTrax?
ReplyDeleteAnnett is the 03, fyi.
ReplyDeleteESPN probably had Nascar throw the caution so they could get a commercial in. I heard Disney advertising is down 30%.
ReplyDeleteHow about a little better list of who pitted and please reset the field after the restart
ReplyDeleteYay lets visit with the in-car reporter and not tell us who pitted. Awful.
ReplyDeleteWho pitted? Are they off now and could steal this? What's Bowyer doing?
Nope. All about Edwards. Keep doing it ESPN.
Repeat the process tomorrow.
JD,What I say? What I say?

ReplyDeletereset the field guys....

why don't they go down to Tim Brewher more?!?!

ReplyDelete3bud, no problems.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we'll hear about Bobby Hamilton Jr's sponsor situation - hey anybody at ESPN know about that?????? And glad Dave Burns voice is back. I think Shannon has read the book too.
ReplyDeleteTime wasted watching Edwards remove tape could have been used for pit information and run down
ReplyDeleteNo update of the field. Just the 1st and 10th place drivers.
ReplyDeleteWhat else is happening no one knows.

ReplyDeleteGonna make for some nice pics when it gets a little darker.

ReplyDeleteESPN is a joke in all aspects of this coverage.
1 more day.

What do you meant 9.1. I am listening in surround, is that the same? It's sounds awesome.
I'll have some more info next week about those issues. TV ad revenue, Ray E and some schedule changes.
ReplyDeleteI have no hope for tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least 5 to many voices on this show. Have we had a segment that we heard PxP?
I'm to full of facts; I just want someone to call the action on the track.
And to top it off FULL THROTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why does anyone think Petree is good? When they go into turns he has no clue who has the advantage. The car on the high side will push ahead but almost everyone knows the care on the bottom has a huge advantage.
ReplyDeleteYet he got excited that another car inched ahead of Bowyer for 3 seconds before he easily passed him back.

12 folks on one broadcast was a topic. Should be fun tomorrow when everyone wants to talk.
Fox trax is way behind & I'm having a ton of trouble here
ReplyDeleteJD you commented on how they could make Full Throttle a little better a while back , I think they heard that. That was a pretty good combination of chatter not so cluttered I guess is what I mean. Engines and Scanner chatter.
ReplyDeleteDot - the 4 wide must have been an accident because they wouldn't normally have shown that. Good racing towards the back that we'll never see.
ReplyDeleteNice triples. Just need a field reset.
ReplyDeletejojaye-
ReplyDeleteSame here, been having trouble with it since lap 30 or so
Good luck ESPN. Top 2 are in 7th and 10th. Will you actually call the top five drivers now?

ReplyDeleteThey are going to talk about limiting it during the off-season.
The problem is grouping the cars. Can't put the top ten together quickly enough to get just them because it changes all the time.
It's a nice feature, just needs to be smaller...

ReplyDelete2fast,
ReplyDeleteThe audio mix at a race is amazing.
Since video and audio travel at different speeds, the mics for the speed shots actually have to be located seperately.
The radio scanner audio is used, nat sound is available on every in-car camera and the other sources inside the truck are endless.
It winds-up looking like a big noodle of wires, but the mix is always great. This season has been outstanding for the audio guys.

ReplyDeleteThe NASCAR Media Group from Charlotte sets-up and maintains the TV compound for all the top tier races.
This lets the various TV networks bring their own people and trucks to split off the audio and video they want to make their shows.
That is why one track can pound out SPEED one minute and then ESPN2 and then TNT back to back.
The audio guys are usually selected by both NMG and the network partners.
Good question.

That is why one track can pound out SPEED one minute and then ESPN2 and then TNT back to back.
The audio guys are usually selected by both NMG and the network partners.
Good question.
Thanks JD. IF you see them, tell them it sounds great..!!!
My buddy who is at the race said there were a lot of people walking around the pits with Mazda shirts on. Are they going to enter?
ReplyDeleteSome of the posters are a little pissy today. The trolls have been busy too. JD, I hope you have someone making the sandwiches today.

ReplyDeleteGuys, if you are new here we are just watching the race and talking TV.
ReplyDeleteWe are all adults and sometimes we get kids who stop by to harrass and play. It's just life.
I will handle the trolls and I appreciate your patience.
We will be in a forum mode for next season without these issues.
Thanks,
JD
JD,
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the technical aspects of ESPN are great but they lack for a better term "soul" for the race. It's like when you see a technically proficient young musician playing the blues. Yes he's got all the chops but he doesn't have the life experience that comes out in his playing that gives it that extra kick and feeling.
2fast,
ReplyDeleteWhat you say in these comments will be read by them. That is the entire point of this blog and what we do.
I keep the ANON function open so TV, NASCAR and team folks can leave comments on topics.
The only way it works is with their help.
JD
Bevo, excellent analogy
ReplyDeleteWhy no helicopter shots yet? JD? Are you at the track?

ReplyDeletebevo,
ReplyDeleteSometimes, one crew chief change can turn a team and a season around.
I hope ESPN swaps AB and the Doctor during the off-season.
The results could be fantastic.

ReplyDelete2fast,
ReplyDeleteThere have been lots of aerial shots in this broadcast.
I am not at the track, but thanks for asking.

ReplyDeleteWe haven't seen the moon yet, guess ESPN will show that shortly. As I said in a previous post - I don't like these points updates.
