In-Progress From Auto Club Speedway: Sprint Cup Series On Fox

The second race of the season for the NASCAR on Fox TV crew comes along from the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

Interesting to note is that there is a thirty minute overlap between the SPEED RaceDay show and the pre-race programming from the Hollywood Hotel on Fox. RaceDay airs from 3:30 to 5:30PM, while Fox takes to the air at 5PM for an hour pre-race show.

Chris Myers will start the Fox coverage by hosting Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond from the infield. Waltrip will present an interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. talking about the accident with Brian Vickers at Daytona.

Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Waltrip will call the action. Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda will cover pit road and the medical center.

Fox presented the Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday and featured Digger throughout the telecast. Expect Digger to play a major role during this California race, the event closest to the Fox Sports headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Once again, Digger will be featured in a cartoon episode during the pre-race show.

This is a long and grinding race that is often won on fuel mileage. When there is an incident, it is often spectacular and potentially dangerous. Watch for the manner in which the TV team handles this type of accident.

One developing story is that five cars have moved to the back of the pack including the two that tangled in Daytona, Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments during the race. Just click the comments button to post and refresh your screen often. This is a family-friendly website, no foul language or hateful speech please. Comments may be moderated before they are posted. A full column about the race will be posted shortly after it is over.

Thanks again and happy posting.

  1. I think the broadcast team could do many of us a great favor if they have a loud horn or siren go off with about 20 laps to go. That way, we can wake up and see the end of the race.

  2. looks like dw scored the "big interview" with dale but here's my quandry: do i suffer thru what is sure to be a digger-fest just to watch that 5 minute interview? or do i just watch it online from the 7,529 places that will post it tonight?

and i'm tired of spencer yelling at us. jimmy? that thing attached to your head is a microphone and it picks up your voice JUST FINE without you having to shout, ok bud? thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  3. God help us all this race will bore the heck out of us all

    ReplyDelete
  4. Well, I lasted through about 4 seconds of that. Lucy Lugnuts? I turned off the tv and will read the paper until the race begins. Guess I'm just too old school for this nonsense.

Also, Sophia, I want your cookie receipe.

  6. @anon 4:42--LOL! I slept a bit too late...my "30 minutes" turned into "an hour" so I'll probably be wide awake

I hope the boyz paid attention to the Kylie Shows yesterday and if it does turn into a snorefest try to keep us into the race. They have the Oscars and The Amazing Race as competition in a few hours. I'm not into the Oscars but TAR will be recording on the other tuner.

  7. Why would FOX & SPEED overlap their shows? I really want to see the JR and DW interview so I changed the channel. I'll be mad if they show it after Raceday is over.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Notice how they mountain shot in the Hollywood hotel instead of the usual grandstand shot due to terrible attendence

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sorry, running a little late....howdy all.

    ReplyDelete
  10. A race is going to break out at a Gavin rossdale concert, I guess

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yep JD. Anyone know if these prerace concerts are a weekly event all season, or just coincidence for the first two races?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lol at Scott Speed with all the ladies

    ReplyDelete
  13. Alex, no clue. They were not in the Fox PR updates.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was still on Speed do wish they wouldn't overlap although the first thing I saw was Myers so I'm glad I did stay on Speed!

    ReplyDelete
  15. welllll...back to raceday till its over.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hopefully FOX gets all their fluff out of the way while we can still watch Raceday on SPEED.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm rocking the PIP and RaceDay is wiping them up right now.

    ReplyDelete
  18. david hill strikes again: lots of racing stories to discuss and we get the pre-race concert, filler video packages and reggie jackson.
gee, now a piece on drew blickensderfer. sigh. and hammond doing a cat in the hat piece.

guess nascar isn't about racing after all: silly me. cue the rat . . . uh, sorry . . . cue the "gopher."

"now it's time for digger." i'm outta here. i don't know if i'll even bother turing it back on today.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Fox and RaceDay reporters covering the same drivers with the same interviews at the same time live.

    Interesting....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes!!!! Digger and friends!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. So Raceday has Hermie talking to Marcos Ambrose about the Aussie fires and charities while Digger is on Fox.

Not too sure this overlap was a good idea...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why is digger driving the car of yesterday?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just switched back to SPEED. Lucky me, they were interviewing Marcos. Really FOX, a Digger video?

    ReplyDelete
  24. So I fell on that grenade and watched the whole cartoon. It is what it is, not completely terrible, but it still has no place on a race broadcast.

Do they still show kids cartoons on saturday mornings? It makes more sense to put the cartoon there instead of the race.

    ReplyDelete
  25. JD,
I don't have PIP, but were the reporters just doing 2 interviews with each driver one after another on each channel, or were they simulcasting the same interview on FOX/SPEED ?

    ReplyDelete
  26. NP JD! We're just glad that we can come here and chat!

Yes I have NRD on and recording the Fox stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sure would be nice if RaceDay ran right up to the start of all the Sprint Cup races.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Alex,

They were over each others shoulders. The Fox guys were putting the interviews on the hard drive for later playback.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wonder how the drivers (well some of the more famous ones) feel about the race beginning and ending a couple of hours later than usual tonight.

For the past few years, Jeff Gordon has been invited to the Vanity Fair post-Oscars party (which is the biggest celebrity party), and last year Jimmie Johnson finally managed an invitation too (i'm sure Jeff put in a good word for him LOL). This year, there's really no way for them to get cleaned up and over there in time - unless they helicopter over or something, I guess.

Then again, I'm sure if either one of them wins today they won't care! And now that I think about it, Jeff has often criticized the somewhat dangerous glare they get in their faces at the beginning of the race in the past; maybe that will be minimized with the later start?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Forgot Fox was already under way but Hermie's interviews are super. I wonder if they have a sellout??? And I sure hope this doesn't turn into a Busch lovefest. JD - thanks for keeping with us!

    ReplyDelete
  31. What in the blazes is FOX trying to hurt my brain with this DIGGER ... "stuff"?

Soooo, why do I have this CaddyShack feel when Digger comes around?

I drives me to the Sci-Fi Channel and sometimes, I don't come back until race time!

Is DIGGER really that popular, or is FOX just forcing gopher down our throats?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bru,

You can look back through the older post for "Meet the real Digger" that will help to talk about what is going on this season.

Bottom line, it's all about the money.

    JD

    ReplyDelete
  33. JD,
FOX probably wouldn't want to have Raceday go until the start of the race. Just imagine how the ratings would tank for the FOX prerace show with competition for the whole time show.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Is there anywhere to catch the race online? Both my TV's stopped working last wednesday. They can not pick up any channels. This sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. NP JD! We're just glad that we can come here and chat!

Yes I have NRD on and recording the Fox stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  36. The TV networks are not big fans of live online sports unless they are getting paid. NASCAR.com will have all the info about online content.

    ReplyDelete
  37. To expand on my last comment:

The ratings would probably dip on FOX with two prerace shows, but I think we would all like to see it, as competition is a good thing.

While FOX has many segments I like, the "fluff" often outweighs the substance. And while SPEED's Raceday isn't as flashy as FOX, nor is it perfect, I feel it's more consistent on content from start to finish.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @alex: agreed. the reason i rarely watch pre-race is b/c i have no patience for the bells and whistles and fluff. in fact, the only reason i even have the tv on at this moment is to catch the dw-dale interview and then i'm off to dinner.

as i said: i may turn it back on later. maybe not.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That would be so nice JD! I miss the Wendy & Hermie talking to the drivers up to the last minute.

(hope this is OK to post JD)

anon 5:37 try justin.tv they've been streaming everything. There's a racing link and then under there is a link to the NA$CAR stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  40. OK, now I'm mad. I should've known better.

    ReplyDelete
  41. could they get a closer shot on dale's face? is that intended to show us that he's being honest or something? for heaven's sake: they should've pulled that camera wayyyy back there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @dot--whatcha mad about?

@red-LOL! I was thinking the same! I don't need to know that much about the dental work of my driver nor do I need to know if he has any buggers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Red,
It's about honestly, and that we all need to know whether or not he shaved this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @alex: OK, that made me laugh right flat out loud and woke the dog up!
    see ya'll later, gang!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Howdy folks! Great to have a race day forum back, Thank you JD!

Have to agree that Myers is the weak link in the pre-race show.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ Gymmie, the JR/DW interview came on after Raceday was over. I tuned in to Prerace not to miss it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sounds like I need to watch Raceday that I DVR'd and now that I'm FF through the Fox stuff I will be caught up very soon (I did watch the cartoon :) I know, I know but I couldn't help it).

    ReplyDelete
  48. to Nan: My choc chip cookie recipe is the Toll house except leave OUT one 1/2 cup of the flour, add 1/2 cup coconut and 1/2 cup oatmeal (Old fashioned is my fave)walnuts leave out if you don't like. make a small batch for first tray, they will spread out a bit more and keep an eye out for browning. (I stir flour before measure but do not sift) If they spread out too much add couple TBL flour (Flour varies from batch to batch depending on age thus moisture content)

Now to the show: Watched Race Day off and on and found it humorous but was surprised to hear spencer used bad language but i did hear him say A$$ at one point. Thought it funny making fun of Hermie S on box to make taller.

did not know Fox and SPEED overlapped shows. BUMMER.*Edit after reading comments no bummer* but I MISS RD going up to RACE and Wendy's strolling interviews.**sigh** Digger more important.

interview close up with Jr WRONG CAMERA. he is running off the screen with top of his head on close ups?? are they cropping the center of tape to make it fit 16:9??? Looks like it.. Our HD tv looks same as no HD SPEED channel on TW yet.

Anyway, hope the recipe is ok JD. sorry for digression but it's part of sharing food for racin!!

Jr sounding a little more like his old man as far as interviews..no excuses...yea, I know he does not have the talent but jr is who HE is.

P.S. Nan, one last tip use UNSWEETENED coconut as sweetened kind has stuff added and will affect TEXTURE of cookies and make too sweet. I use half real butter and half/real Crisco for fat.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'll be posting my family's old recipe for fried gopher, keep checking back.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Dot--OIC :(...yes I can definitely understand that frustration :(

@Sophia--everything was set on the DVR and I didn't realize until earlier today that there was a 30 minute overlap. I have a dual recorder DVR <3 so it can record both but yes for those without had to do the back and forth or miss one. But sounds like due to Digger and some concerts NRD was the best best for all.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm liking those cookie may have to try it this week. Almost caught up now.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Is there a chance of rain or is it just overcast?

    ReplyDelete
  53. @ Anon 6:05, Way too funny.

Welcome to TDP Comedy & Cookies Tour.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Quite surprised we did not see "House" interviewed since he is on a Fox series and the grand marshal.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Very nice anthem :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. JD, Just overcast. Looks the same in LV. Meyers did mention a slight chance of rain nearby.

    JD, they showed Digger instead.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Right Sophia I said to my DH (who is here reading some silly book and probably has no idea Nascar is even on) Jr is just like his father - it could have been Dale talking

  58. For your infomation -
This is the 2nd Sprint Cub Series race for 2009. This race is the Auto Club 500, at the 2 mile D-shaped Oval from the Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California. It is Cloudy, the temperature is 65° F., 18° C. Humidity 56% and the Winds are calm. Forecast for the race is cloudy. This track is about 46 miles (50 minutes) East of Los Angeles, California. It is now 6:10 pm at the track. Sunset was at 5:41pm, pst.

Last year this race was on Monday, February 25th, 2008 due to a rain delay and was called the Auto Club 500. Qualifying was rained out so there was no pole winner. The Winner of last years race was - Carl Edwards followed by Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Martin Truex Jr., Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman, this made up the top 10. Race ran 3 hours, 46 minutes with 12 cautions for 44 laps.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Chris said there was a slight chance of rain but they think it won't be near the track...

    ReplyDelete
  60. JD, they'll save the house interview to do during green flag racing.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Overcast. There's a 14% chance of rain... I don't think it's an issue.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anon 6:11, Are you the 6:05 anon too? Out yourself, you are too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I wonder if FOX has a "roadkill" animation for when there's a spin in the turns.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh so that's why he was there, I saw some of the cast of Heroes too. Guess it's movie stars at the awards not TV stars, they are evidently at the track. Guess they neded to give away more tickets to get some butts in the seats. Liked the JR interview, despite the close up, and the BV follow up.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It was sprinkling at the track when te drivers got in their cars, but it's stopped now, according to another place I moniter.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Tough weekend to get the big stars to the track. They are kind of busy. Remember Pam Anderson one season? That was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I thought it was a good interview with JR. Glad I'm not the only one not interested in counting his facial pores! Thought it was interesting when he said and I'm paraphrasing, something to the effect that the younger drivers don't understand his popularity when they don't see the preformance to match. That thought must be hard to have, and harder to express. Don't see him saying that kind of thing to say...Jamie Little

    ReplyDelete
  68. Couple of blog posts elsewhere I've seen have said only 10 percent chance of rain...

But in checking the weather website, the chance of rain increases to 25 percent chance of rain around 3:45 PM (6:45 ET). Then the chance of rain goes down to basically zero by 4 PM. So maybe a little drizzle here and there in a little while. Hopefully light rain and fast moving, because that's a big track to dry.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @ri88girl,

If only that same question had began with "How do you feel..."

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks for the weather info. Hate that hazy look for a race.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If it rains, at least we have precedence for Nascar willing to stick it out 8 hours from now.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Did FOX use Krista on pit road last year?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Big difference between these pit reporters and the ESPN firesuits.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Little disappointed they didnt do grid intros like they did at Daytona.

Glad to be back for another season with this crazy cast of characters.

Look at the 24 and 48 to be the cars to beat, 18 may be up there, 17, 83 and 26 being quiet contenders.

Not very happy about teasing the Dale Jr interview with raceday still running, know some people prolly switched for the sole reason of seeing that.

Not talking about what is probably a relatively small crowd, should be interesting indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Gee, I tried hard to get all the information right on my post and I got the time wrong.
It was 3:10 at the track when I posted.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Evidently there is a "guest driver" in the pace car and the guys can't get a true pit road speed. Drivers = not happy. Wonder who the guest driver is? Did anyone one say I FF through the rest to get to the start

    ReplyDelete
  77. Seperated at birth - Matt Yokum and Digger???
Am I the only one to see that?

    ReplyDelete
  78. ri88, yes Krista was on the Fox package last season.

    ReplyDelete
  79. JD thanks for allowing the recipe. Your site aims to please.

The Gopher recipe STRAIGHT out of grannies kitchen on Beverly Hillbillies...Grits, biscuits and Gopher gravy! :-)

And yes JD, I remember Pamela Anderson and her shirt..or was that at the All-Stars...I thought if she took a deep breath...well, never mind, family site!

Compared to Digger, the 6 seconds of BBB by DW, minutiae gripe!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Nice.. My local FOX station is running Atlanta Motor Speedway ads for the race in a few weeks, which are on top of the FOX graphics. On Lap 2 I got to see the view of "#9-Kasey Ka".

    ReplyDelete
  81. @nrf--yup! I saw the Heroes folks! I was like "lets talk to them!"

@ri88girl--yup. We *finally* got rid of Jeanne Z and got Krista a year or so ago :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. JD what do you think of the new graphic on the digger cam? Instead of an animated act with noises, its just a static image without its own sound. Seems like a better idea too me. What say you?

    ReplyDelete
  83. To anon 5:37

    Listen to MRN free.

    ReplyDelete
  85. weather moving in?

repeats of last year im thinking

    ReplyDelete
  86. recognize Angie's NFL husband up on the flag stand??

    ReplyDelete
  87. I like Yokum, it's not meant to be a dis. I just saw it with that really close camera shot of him.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @bevo--my YumYum looks like a gopher?

    ReplyDelete
  89. the Digger GRAPHIC is TOO BIG imo.

just saying'..oh I think they will still use the silly moving one..until it shows up during a SERIOUS crash,

    ReplyDelete
  90. NP, but links don't post in comments so I usually try to put them in the posts. Just email me if you want to put in a link.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes, JD. Giants fan here. It's Jason Sehorn.

    JohnInVa

    ReplyDelete
  92. JD Nope I don't watch no stinkin football, although I did know she was married to one. She was having fun and that's nice to see. Maybe Gillian actually found stars who wanted to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  93. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  94. As for the weather, there is just some sub tropical moisture moving in to the north aloft, its not even an organized weather system. It only contains light sprinkles and most of it is not reaching the ground since the surface is still low in humidity. I dont expect rain to effect today's race at all.

    ReplyDelete
  95. We have a winner. Another guy with a wife taller than him...sorry Jeff.

    ReplyDelete
  96. We have a winner. Another guy with a wife taller than him...sorry Jeff.

JD ?? Must have missed it

    ReplyDelete
  97. Gymmie-

    Just an observation :)
I like Matt - he did a great job hosting Stewart's show on Sirius.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Thanks BruS, perhaps they want to rethink that practice

    ReplyDelete
  99. Poor Ryan :(...he's had something go wrong every race so far :(

    ReplyDelete
  100. nrf,

Angie Harmon is married to a former NFL player.

Jeff Gordon's wife is taller than him. Both Angie and Ms. Gordon are former models.

    ReplyDelete
  101. This is the second week with a car having a transponder problem.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Also, any showers that we might see today are developing as the clouds move up against the mountains. Hence the showers are not moving in, but just developing in one area making it harder to predict where and when they will occur.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thanks, Angie is still in the flag stand she really must be having fun. Guess she's not that buttoned up lawyer she played on TV

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm never going to be a "digger" fan. But as I have said in previous posts, the animations don't bother me in concept as long as they are not in the way of the action "tuchdown robot" or whatever the Fox NFL thing is called would be a decent example.

So far, we're seeing a LOT of digger today, more than
I woule like. But we're seeing a better version as far as I'm concerned. Non animated graphic during the racing shots, more use of him during the "bumper" promos coming back from commercial, etc.

If they keep going in this direction, we could reach a "okay, I'll stop complaining" point. Just keep it out of the racing, stop with the same animated graphic every time, and stop making the announcers fake-laugh every time they go to the digger-cam. Fox is getting started in that direction today in my opinion.

Not ever going to love it, but it's getting better...slightly.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Wow, this is not a very good situation for TV. Just enough rain to keep things under caution.

    ReplyDelete
  106. if the 48hrs of Fontana happens again...do y'all think King B might reconcider killing this race. Some one on here made the great suggestion that we just do a second Vages race instead. Not that I want to sit through the tourture, if we get rid of this race it would be worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. wouldn't you like to be the guy who was supposed to screw the wing endplate on? Going to meet Tony up close and personal after this race.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I thought it didn't rain in southern california. This is southern right, I am somewhat geographically challenged. So will the race be over before the 11:00 news, this is not looking good

    ReplyDelete
  109. "big drops" per the 24 channel, getting the covers out on pit road. Is this the 08 24 hrs of fontana all over again?? Also of interesting, Gordon just said "bigger crowd here than I thought they were going to have", to which letarte responded "yeah it is impressive today given the weather.

    ReplyDelete
  110. how would you like to be the guy that chose the wing for that team to use? that is if the issue is the wing...

    ReplyDelete
  111. JD I think she was standing on a box or something so she/prob any flagman can reach over the fence and wave away

    ReplyDelete
  112. @bevo--good thing...I was hoping I wouldn't have to come over and go Billy Blanks on ya :p

I hope the rest of the race goes better for Ryan

    ReplyDelete
  113. If they have to do the digger nonsense, I prefer the fixed image in the screen. At least it doesn't make noise.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Since we have the time to look stuff up Jason Seahorn is 6'2" and his wife Angie Harmon is 5'10".

    ReplyDelete
  115. Guess Angie's not leaving anytime soon *giggle*

    ReplyDelete
  116. nrf-

It has rained off and on in SoCal for a month. NHRA had a nightmare with the WinterNationals last week

    ReplyDelete
  117. She is in the flagstand longer than DW last season!

    ReplyDelete
  118. please....the 24 hours at fontana CANNOT happen this year again...THIS IS NOT A STORM. just a passing area of extra moisture.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Thanks Nan, is Jeff's wife that tall too?

    ReplyDelete
  120. JD kind of OT

the oldtimers race this spring...anyone going to televise it on payper view or something?

    ReplyDelete
  121. "track was looking good, now it's coming down hard" - J. Gordon

wow, tough spot again for nascar, red flag it, or keep wasting laps under caution, they can't catch a break when it comes to mother nature, who must not be a Brian France fan, lol

    ReplyDelete
  122. No free scanner channels on NASCAR dot com this year. Cheapskates.

    ReplyDelete
  123. ri88girl,
I hope it's on TV somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Good NAPA commercial. Still love the Ron Capps and his "funny car" ones.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Ingrid is only listed at 5'9", but Jeff is tiny. He lies about his height on offical stuff (claims either 5'7" or 5'8") , but I would be suprised if he is even 5'6".

    ReplyDelete
  126. I was hoping NASCAR.COM was going to offer online video this season since Hot Pass was gone.

    ReplyDelete
  127. JJ and Chad were considering a nap, but they have noticed Angie in the flag stand, Chad is cracking up and JJ was too nice to bring it up until Chad said something and.... it's starting to rain again.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Actually Hot Pass is still on DirectTV except they don't have the dedicated announcer. We are listening to Jr's radio.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I wonder if Brian is at ANY race besides Daytona, Michigan and Homestead

    ReplyDelete
  130. Vicky, isn't Hot Pass this year just some in-car cameras?

    ReplyDelete
  131. We are either going to get a red flag or a wreck, way wet in 1 and 2

    ReplyDelete
  132. jet dryers back out. track isnt wet according to MRN it just comes and goes repeatedly which is aggrivating everyone

    ReplyDelete
  133. I appreciate DirecTV offering the HotPass channels but it's just one in-car camera with the national feed in another box. Still have to listen to the regular broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I never had HOT PASS but when cable did the pay thing and you could choose the driver I thought it was great and well worth the money. If a switch to Direct TV wasn't such a pain I'd do it if they just gave us incar, I would rather howerver pay to listen to the FOX crew somewhere once BSPN takes over.

    ReplyDelete
  135. One thing FOX is doing right is showing as many commercials as they can right now, gets them out of the way for the end of the race!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Looking at the radar map on weather.com

More rain heading that way in 30 minutes or so.

    ReplyDelete
  137. bevo,
Dont trust the radar in this situation. this kind of weather formation does not show up on radar well. It will tell you rain is somewhere where its not, and wont show rain where there is some.

    ReplyDelete
  138. @bevo--yup I like the "funny car" commercials too

Will they let her stay up there for the whole race if she chooses?

  139. J.D.,

    DirecTV HotPass

    795 - Kasey Kahne
    796 - Kevin Harvick
    797 - Dale Jr.
    798 - Carl Edwards

The network audio is about 20% too loud and overpowers the scanner channel.

  140. So, now reality hits. Only 30 laps of 250 and its already 7PM eastern.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I don't know...the radar I looked at a while ago showed rain between 3:30 and 3:45 and that's what we got. So the radar must know something...

    ReplyDelete
  142. Verizon wireless Speed shot interesting

    ReplyDelete
  143. the radar has showed rain over Fontana consistently for about 2 hours....that has NOT been what we got. its on and off on the ground

    ReplyDelete
  144. J.D.,

The only good thing about rain on the track is it might mean the big-shots in Hollywood might be getting wet on the red carpet.

  145. One hour until my family switches to "The Amazing Race". We'll be back at 9.

    ReplyDelete
  146. do you guys remember that Mike Calinoff was the player in the E:60 story about the supposedly bogus racing training program for kids?

Now he won Daytona spotting for Kenseth.

    ReplyDelete
  147. again, this is NOT a storm that is moving in. Just moisture and showers. On and off is all we will get. Not continuous rain like last year.

    ReplyDelete
  148. JD,
The TV window goes to 10pm, 7pm west. In Atlanta they've scheduled local news 10-11 and a House rerun 11-12. If it's not finished in 3 hours, in the past FOX usually pre-empts the local news here with a race overrun. I don't think we'll miss any action, but it still reflects poorly on the "start the races later and later" argument.

    ReplyDelete
  149. well, that was an interesting Ask.com commercial.

    ReplyDelete
  150. JD never made the connection, wonder what happen to all those racers

    ReplyDelete
  151. Now that ASK.com commercial was funny right there..

    ReplyDelete
  152. This thing could have been over by now and avoided the rain.

As for gopher recipes, well, I've got a good one for armadillo. hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  153. Thanks for the 87 update, I was just about to post he was on pit road and we had no info.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Let's hope that the fans are taking tomorrw off from work/school. FOX is going to lose viewers later when the Oscars start. Why would NASCAR/ISC sabotage their own race?

    ReplyDelete
  155. more rain, of course JJ wants a caution so he doesn't have to pit under green but.....

    Yep, pure sillyness.
What does this race take us right to, late local news? Woohoo.

  157. JD,

Not only that but Calinoff now has a weekly segment on Sirius Speedway ;)

    ReplyDelete
  158. OMG! glad I took a nap!

    ReplyDelete
  159. More rain. I never expected this . . . . I thought the race started so late to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Another yellow for rain, hopefully they will not rerun the cartoon but if it goes red I bet we will see it again

  163. More rain and Toast running 40th. He did have a good run yesterday.

Let's exchange recipes during the delay.

    ReplyDelete
  164. The Oscars?? Seriously? Who here cares about THAT and actually would watch THAT over live racing action?

    ReplyDelete
  165. As a west coaster i MISS early start times. Can roll out of bed, see the race and have the rest of the day to do whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  166. more rain...ZZZZzzzz

I am about reading to pop in a Gilmore Girls DVD..this is getting old.

    GREAT START TIME NASCAR...sigh...

Wasn't it last year Brian France said it was gonna be about the fans again. Ha. Bologna. It will always be about Frances pockets..certainly not what's best for the sport. I would think ATTENDANCE would be better if earlier start times..and if races were in communities where they were WANTED.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Did that windshield explanation really call for safety glasses? He looked kinda goofy with those.

    ReplyDelete
  168. The thing I am thinking about is the Victory Lane show scheduled for 10PM.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Who knew Kyle Busch had a brother that raced too?

    Yes, I'm joking!

  174. its about getting people to your site. much like the go daddy commercials

  177. Hollywood is worried tonight will be the most boring show EVER. No big stars wanting to show and powers that be in FLOP SWEAT at what to do...movies are all dreck...so i would rather watch a race...but wonder how this will affect the ratings...who the heck watches all those boring award shows??

Is this how NASCAR gets celebs on their way to the awards...just curious why this date in CALIF is chosen.

Then again any date in LA area.

    Green again..bipolar weather.

  178. Anon 7:13PM,

drop me an email at editor@thedalyplanet.tv for a chat about that.

We do not tell others what to do here or how to feel. That last sentence did not get it.

Got a problem, just drop me a line. I am customer service oriented!

  179. I just have to tell my Reggie Jackson story. When I lived in Florida we went to a Yankees spring training game in Ft. Lauderdale, and Reggie dropped 2 fly balls in 3 innings. And that year he drove a Rolls Royce to the games. What a show off.

    ReplyDelete
  180. "The only good thing about rain on the track is it might mean the big-shots in Hollywood might be getting wet on the red carpet."

Nah, we're watching the red carpet stuff a little during the delay and it's not raining there (yet). Cloudy, though. They are pretty far from Fontana.

"FOX is going to lose viewers later when the Oscars start. Why would NASCAR/ISC sabotage their own race?"

The Oscars have been losing massive amounts of viewers for about five years now. FOX probably decided that this was the year to hit them hard and go completely head to head with them, to see if a race could take a chunk of their viewers.

But as you said, they may lose their gamble because of the rain. I always thought they'd lose their gamble because many East Coast folks like to get bed early on Sunday nights for work the next day, Oscars, NASCAR, or not.

"The Oscars?? Seriously? Who here cares about THAT and actually would watch THAT over live racing action?"

NASCAR's audience is 40 percent female. Oscar's audience is something like 60 percent female. It will overlap, just like NASCAR lost some viewers during the Olympics.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Man, got to give it to the guys...they are flying out there.

  182. "I always thought they'd lose their gamble because many East Coast folks like to get bed early on Sunday nights for work the next day, Oscars, NASCAR, or not."

I don't agree with that argument. Sunday Night Football on NBC does fine going until 11:30 PM eastern.

    ReplyDelete
  183. They changed the second Cali race date for this season. I wonder if they will change this date for 2010?

    ReplyDelete
  184. Gee, I have no clue to the Oscars, not a movie guy.
