Here we go with eight hours of live NASCAR on SPEED.
RaceDay is first at 4PM for three hours. The All-Star races are next at 7PM and then
Victory Lane wraps it all up at 11PM ET.
This post will serve to host your comments as we watch SPEED deal with both the weather and a live Sprint Cup Series non-points race.
Geez, stupid intro. "Only track deemed worthy of hosting the all star race" The hometown track for all the teams is more like it.
ReplyDeleteNot perhaps the best of starts...but three hours to go.
ReplyDeleteman, the hype is too much already. I thought that opening would neva end! :) THREE HOURS? Once my hair is dry, a quick errand is in order.
ReplyDeleteNow sure what to think of the weather either. Could be a long night or non existant race.
Well I'm still catching up from earlier. That plus being on call I may never catch up that said Raceday usually has so many commercials and those fluff pieces it may not be a problem.
ReplyDeleteRain in Concord - check
ReplyDeleteRain in Indy - check
Rain in Arlington (Rangers) - check
Rain in San Antonio (golf) - check
This is shaping up to be a not so great sports day
I just have a hard time with Kenny doing all this yelling.
ReplyDeleteMarty Smith says the rain fell hard, then the sun came out and there is more rain on the way for later. Could get interesting.
ReplyDeleteRadar looks like another small blast on the way.
ReplyDelete@Paul- I think you're just picking up Kenny on the radar
ReplyDeleteHas anyone on SPEED mentioned the rain yet?
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the radar from a regional view, it looks like it could rain on and off all night long.
ReplyDeleteLet it get it out of it's system this weekend. I'll be at the race next weekend and don't want to see any rain for the 600!
ReplyDeleteSteve L.

Bevo, looks great in Baltimore at the Preakness.
Looks like rain to me to for this evening. Rain all day tomorrow. I am guessing this race will be run on Monday.
ReplyDeleteBut you never know.
Thanks Karen, the race totally slipped my mind :)
ReplyDeleteSPEED Alert... Kenny just mentioned the Mayfield suspension, he said he was "kicked out of the sport" and basically said he was caught on illegal drugs...good reporting kenny..tow that Nascar line. Kenny where did YOU get your info from, since no one else has it yet.... I just want to know the truth here.
ReplyDeleteDang! Was in the laundry room and only partially heard the quick Kenny blurb on Jeremy. Not sure what to think
ReplyDeleteAlso, yes, Kenny take a deep breath and please stop YELLING. Mercy. he is going to be worn out before VL!
and why does he go on like that about Montoya? Is there some inside joke I don't know?...it's not like he was anywhere close to Schumacher in F1.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know when the burnout thing is going to happen?
ReplyDeleteBob Pockrass on Twitter:
ReplyDelete"A plane flying above track says Free Jeremy!"
OK, who hired the plane?
Welp, that's an interesting little tidbit..a plane?? Wow..
ReplyDeleteAnd did Kenny screw up & misspeak or what? Yikes!
New's from the track somejust twittered that there is a Plane flying over track with a banner that say's FREE JEREMY!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCOOL....
If the showdown qualifying is rained out next year, maybe then can use practice times to determine the starting order instead of the qualifying order.
ReplyDeleteThose guys who are in the back have very little chance to pass 20 or 30 cars in the 40 laps that are going to be run. Especially since caution laps count. At least if they used the best practice laps there would be some sense of the fastest cars getting the best starting spots.
I'm not sure they're prepared for doing a 3-hour show. They're doing quite a bit of fluff material.
ReplyDeleteJust for info. when they show the track wide shot where you can see the press box to the left the camera is looking North. The bad weather is coming from the West, Southwest.
ReplyDelete@Karen--I believe it starts about 6:20
ReplyDeleteBurnout deal is suppose to be on this long prerace segment.
ReplyDelete@haus20--that would be a great idea! They always say "so and so 'won' practice" why not line 'em up that way :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! FREE JEREMY! FREE JEREMY! That's got to be great.
I agree haus20. Or they could have qualified this morning. It really stinks for guys like Vickers who had an excellent chance at transferring and now are stuck in the back of the pack for a shootout.
ReplyDeleteThis is kind of like it was last season. Lots of talking heads and very little content.
ReplyDeleteThey're definitely doing their best to keep the cameras pointed down towards the ground, and not towards the sky.
ReplyDeleteMan, that Ask.com ad creeps me out!
ReplyDeleteNothing says love like a marriage proposal on NASCAR Raceday!
ReplyDeleteIf any one is interested, weather.com has a great radar that you can put into motion as well as see the actual track and surrounding area in relation to where the rain is located. The last shower looked as if it broke up just west of the concord area. Don't worry, there are plenty more on the way.
ReplyDeleteI hope my cell phone battery doesn't die during the middle of the drivers meeting. Streaming video really eats up my battery life.
ReplyDeleteKaren...Marty Smith just tweeted burnout in 30 mnutes
ReplyDeleteIs the track in Charlotte or Concord?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletethe track is in Concord
ReplyDeleteAnd raining in Houston, but we only have the strawberry festival and that will still go on today.
ReplyDeletewow, JD, u r running a tight ship today.
ReplyDeleteSeems like JR, Kenny and Jimmy are kind of running out of gas.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite moments was that guy proposing at a basketball game and the girl turning and running out of the arena :)
ReplyDeletehaus,
ReplyDeleteLive and let live my friend. They could have been MIT grads from Mass. who like NASCAR.
Ya feeling me?
If anyone is interested Stanton Barrett is practicing now for the Indy 500. John Andretti is looking good and they just showed Jason Leffler on pitroad.
ReplyDeleteI should just add to my previous post, Jason Leffler was walking around pit road. He's not going to drive.
ReplyDeleteI think Jimmy Spenser needs a beer run fast.. he is fading.....
ReplyDeleteI recently got VS in HD. The Lingner Group guys are doing a great job with the IRL.
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting to see how the ESPN crew does with Indy.
I understand they have Brent M. coming back.
David Poole would not be happy with Tony showing off his "manfeet"
ReplyDeleteGot to give Rutledge the nod on the KC interview. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteDoes Miss Sprint Cup's hair look different?
ReplyDeleteErik,
ReplyDeleteDid you listen to the drivers meeting?
this show is struggling a bit. they have the artist on and he's mic'd up ready to talk and all he does is stand there and we see the painting for 10 secs and off they go. ??????????
ReplyDeleteIts ongoing, going over the specifics of the race format, now.
ReplyDeleteJohn Andretti q'd 29th just now. How many are going to be in the field?
ReplyDeleteboth races can be rain shortened after halfway
ReplyDeleteJD,
ReplyDeleteregarding Brent M. at Indy for ABC, thank goodness ESPN/ABC doesn't have the Daytona 500, that would be ugly
JD said...
ReplyDeleteI understand they have Brent M. coming back.
What a buzzkill you are.
Looking at the radar, the areas of precipitation appear to be filling in. Be interesting to see what it looks like in another 90 minutes, right before green flag for the showdown.
ReplyDeleteEach "slice" of the TV contract has one feature element.
ReplyDeleteFox paid for the Daytona 500 and got the rest of the races. TNT gets the summer Daytona night race and has to deal with the other 5 summer events.
ESPN/ABC paid top dollar for the Chase and got the Nationwide Series and a daily NASCAR news show in the deal.
ESPN also handles the international TV distribution of NASCAR races.
ESPN changed a lot of things, but poor Jerry Punch trapped in that play by play role is still tough to watch. Such a nice guy.
at least if there is one thing we can count on it would be wendy's feature being good. she seems always so comfortable with the drivers and they with her. funny stewart's flipflops
ReplyDeletesprinkling on raceday now
ReplyDeleteLOL Wendy " a little drizzle here but I think the rains' behind us" as we hear thunder/increasing winds in the background...
ReplyDeleteAbout to get interesting on live TV.
ReplyDeleteNot too much more info in the drivers meeting, than what you can get from Jayski. They have the invocation, and anthems down to the minute.
ReplyDeleteAlso, going over the differences. You can work on cars under the red flag. Double-file restarts, the 2nd place car can not jump the leader at a restart...
Is the Victory challenge live? Marty said it was coming up in 30 minutes and that was over an hour ago.
ReplyDelete33 make the race at indy.
ReplyDeleteWhats the scheduled green flag for the Open? (I know, its the "showdown" but its always been/will be the Open to me lol)
Should be able to tell by the cloud cover if it's tape-delayed or not. After this gets finished, I wouldn't doubt they'll struggle to wind up the show.
ReplyDeleteGreen flag for the Open is at 7:30p.m. Eastern.
ReplyDeleteStanton Barrett just miss Q'g by a hair. Has to do it again tomorrow on Bump Day.
ReplyDeleteWhoooooooooo
ReplyDeleteJD: Raceday today should only be 2 hours, and the window between the top of the hour and the green flag should not be 30 minutes. 2 hours of pre-race is long enough. It is NO shock these guys are running out of gas, 3.5 hours of content PLUS what you have to do between the open and the race is just alot to ask from anyone without some sense of repetition
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteExpanding the franchise has never been a good idea. This is an example of that.
@Karen- I imagine that brought a smile to Tony Stewart's face :)
ReplyDeleteThis challenge doesn't seem to be too organized. LOL
ReplyDeleteDavid, SportsCenter might be the best example of that. Unwatchable these days.
ReplyDeleteIve never minded a 3 hour raceday but quite honestly when you get that PLUS a separate "pre-race" with more of the same it just gets annoying too fast. I liked what ESPN used to do when they had NASCAR2Day which was the pre-race then it went straight into opening ceremonies
ReplyDeleteMike, last year it was equally as um.....organized.
ReplyDeleteBurnout contest = horrible.
ReplyDeletePoor DW only got 39
ReplyDeleteYes I remember last year being a mess too JD :(
Biff will win, or Harvick
ReplyDeleteThe judges even look clueless as to what they're supposed to do.
ReplyDeleteHAHA Harvick is great
ReplyDeleteThey really do Mike!
ReplyDeleteyeah the judges are lost. you'd think for the months they had to prepare that this wouldn't look totally thrown together like it does.
ReplyDeleteat least we had a legends race or something like that to see last year lol
Radar actually looks pretty decent, any big storms are well off to the south or west
ReplyDeleteRachel Alexandra wins the Preakness first filly to win it in 84 years. Mine That Bird comes in 2nd.
ReplyDeleteKylie's breaking the track!
ReplyDeleteThe fans, its all about the fans.
ReplyDeleteGetting tired of hearing that.
Is there a list anywhere showing the names of the celebrity riders?
ReplyDeleteBevo said ...
ReplyDelete"Rachel Alexandra wins the Preakness first filly to win it in 84 years. Mine That Bird comes in 2nd."
Super Filly indeed. Although if it had been a quarter mile longer, Mine That Bird might have pulled it off.
just turned the dvr on for race day - switched to NBC to see the repaly
ReplyDeletemine that bird was still impressive
ReplyDeleteJust seen on nascar.com race buddy is back for the all star. Their link doesnt work but here it is fixed:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nascar.com/multimedia/webcast/allstar/index.html?sc_cid=asbuddy15
Bill H
I was switching back and forth from Indy qualifying to Speed but when that burnout competition started I couldn't watch - it was too painful. Missed the Preakness as storm washed out the satellite.
ReplyDeleteDavid said...
ReplyDeleteBurnout contest = horrible.
Or rather unwatchable.
Not the stupidest thing I have ever seen on TV, but dang near.
That was thirty minutes of my life I will not get back and that seemed like an eternity, what a waste. And Speed did an awful job with that, I am sure there was a list somewhere that said who the passengers were. that was "One Hot Mess" at the track known for "One Hot Night"
ReplyDeleteburnout thing. no good. speed people probably thought it was great. might be ok live. but structure not there for tv. judges did look clueless.
ReplyDeleteBill H, thanks for the link.
ReplyDeletejust signed on as the burnout started. the coverage was good and kevin did well. tv did ok covering it. liked what the biff had to say. but the hype was not all as built up to be
ReplyDeleteWhat time does the showdown actually go green? Three hours of RaceDay.....please don't tell me SPEED has another 30 minutes of pre-race from 7-7:30?
ReplyDeleteIs Rick Flair on drugs? Love the guy and WHOOOOOOOOO!, but he seemed detatched from the whole deal.
ReplyDeleteShowdown takes the green at 7:30p.m. Eastern.
ReplyDeleteJD,
ReplyDeleteInteresting situation on Fox today. Angels-Rangers game started 1 and 1/2 hours late. It was the late national game along with Mets-Giants. When the Rangers game started the markets that were to get it besides DFW and LA stayed with the other game. Fox says they don't want to mess up their prime time schedule. Needless to say there are some upset viewers in the Texas area and Southern Cal.
Glad this isn't a Fox race tonight :)
So another 30 minutes of pre-race....This thing is so drawnnnnnn out.
ReplyDeleteThink SPEED can make us just as crazy about Wrecked as they did last year?
ReplyDeleteWhen I say 7:30, that's the earliest the green flag will fly for the Showdown....might be later if there's any opening ceremonies involved.
ReplyDeleteAccording to JR, the racing might have gotten better for tonight but the pre-race is way too long.
ReplyDeleteHow does Speed mispell one of the competitors names? Kasey Kahen???
ReplyDeletec'mon guys
S&P starting 2nd in the showdown, this will be rather interesting
ReplyDeleteShelmerdine and Long to the back. How smart are they?
ReplyDeleteThree hours down, five to go.
ReplyDelete@ Karen, how funny would it be if they both transfer?
ReplyDeleteJD,
ReplyDeleteJust another reason I do not watch prereace very often. Just too long.
for me one down and five to go. maybe.
That's what I would like the Hollywood Hotel to look like next season on Fox.
ReplyDeletehmm, start moved up to weather, radar looks good
ReplyDeleteJD, how long till krista replaces myers on FOX?
wow nice timing there JD lol
ReplyDeleteYou know my idea, Voda in the Hotel and Wendy to pit road.
ReplyDeleteNothing against Chris, it is just time for him to move on.
JD your blog to Fox's ears
ReplyDeleteditto on the krista / chris. what a difference
ReplyDeleteWhy can't FOX move Krista into the infield studio permanently? The lame jokes and idiotic acts are gone. Wendy Venturini could take over for Krista on pitroad & problem solved.
ReplyDeleteKrista does a very good job and is extremely comfortable on camera, but she has NO fashion sense. Last night it was a Star Trek outfit and tonight it looks like she is wearing a Snuggie!
ReplyDeleteAnon at 7:08 that's the same thing I thought. I liked her outfit last night tho.
ReplyDeleteKaren, they had to due to a wrecked car and engine change. It wasnt their choice.
ReplyDeleteIm referring to the 66 tho starting 2nd.
Yall know what the Fox response to that idea would be don't you?
ReplyDeleteTOUGH
VOTE FOR DINGER!!!!
ReplyDeletewell I like having Krista on, couldn't help but notice the math gaffe (3,6,9) powers of 3, uh, wouldn't that be multiples of 3? powers would be 3, 9, 27, etc...
ReplyDeletesorry this math major will shut up now :p
It's just a shame that despite the Showdown being an exhibition race with double-file restarts, a competition caution at halfway, work allowed on the cars under a red flag, and a starting lineup made by a random drawing that they're still applying the 'normal rules' sending Kirk and Carl to the back for the start. It sure would have been to see them get a chance to be in the spotlight, even if it would only be for a lap or two.
ReplyDeleteIt should also be interesting to see what the normal start-and-park group has in store tonight. Can't exactly use the 'can't afford tires' defense in a 40-lap race.
As for the burnout contest, I agree with the thoughts of many others that it might be time to come up with a different type of skills contest next year.
Ugh....leave it to SPEED to take two commercial breaks within the first 10 minutes. Can we just get to the race!?
ReplyDeleteThat would be as opposed to middle aged white guys in long sleeved oxfords?
ReplyDeleteThe entire on-air fashion look on SPEED from the white winter jackets to the horrible disco shirts is a mess.
It is even made worse when the drivers are all in their snazzy polo shirts alongside the on-air talent.
They really need to get a clue in this area.
Montoya not in the top five? He better race his way in then.
ReplyDeleteSign of the times? Clothing affecting viewers?
ReplyDelete...sending Kirk and Carl to the back for the start, that is EXACTLY what Nascar wants to have happen. They cannot have those two headline the front row.
ReplyDeleteI think they're advancing the commercial breaks in pre-race to get the Showdown started as early as possible.
ReplyDeletehey gang! just checking in -- will join up once we actually get racing!
ReplyDelete@jd and bill h in re: race buddy: using the link provided and i get the home page but nothing else. is there a preview feature i'm not seeing?
@nrf: hoping you'll make it tonight: i found out this morning that ursinus WAS having graduation today as well as GMC. lonnnggggg day for this camper!
I just got a revised green flag time emailed to me of 7:45PM. Could that be true?
ReplyDeleteKirk actually admitted he was worried about starting on tthe front row. It is no secret he and Carl are underfunded and alot slower than most teams. They would have been moving road blocks on the track.
ReplyDeleteok, i have to get this snarky comment in and then it's off to dinner:
ReplyDeletein re: God bless america -- he ain't no kate smith.
Could I be the national anthem picker guy for next season please?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking we'll be getting the Showdown green flag right at 7:30
ReplyDeleteOK, I rest my case on the shirts!
ReplyDeleteShowdown green flag will be at the bottom of the hour. not a doubt in my mind. 7:35 at the latest.
ReplyDeleteWow, just be able to start the race?! Really lowering the standards for being an all-star aren't we?
Still cool seeing Kirk and Carl on the front row though.
ReplyDeletethose blue shirts are bright!
ReplyDeleteCarl Edwards is the "suprise" pit reporter? Wasn't he the special pit reporter last year too? It's not really much of a suprise.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is only one Kate Smith, was a hugh Flyers fan back then, cut school for those parades. Thanks for the concern Red I missed the traffic
ReplyDeleteAnymore I think the Showdown race is more exciting than the main event is. If there's a group that let's it all hang out, it's these Showdown cars.
ReplyDeleteMike, what do you think of the break before the final 10 lap segment? I think thats a mistake. It should be after segment 2 because I'd love to see strategy be a factor in the final 10 since with this car, on this track, clean air means so much we may only see action on the restart in the big show and it be a dull finish...
ReplyDeleteI also think Carl did this before. I like the blue shirts but then my Speed isn't in HD so that might be the difference
ReplyDeleteDavid, I think it probably scared the bejesus out of them.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous said...
ReplyDeleteCarl Edwards is the "suprise" pit reporter? Wasn't he the special pit reporter last year too? It's not really much of a suprise.Especially when Wendy interviewed him and talked about it on Race Day
Does anyone else have a buzzing noise on their TV's from the audio on Speed? I'm getting a buzzing sound when the mics from the announcers are on the air, but not any time else. When they just went to the command to start your engines, the buzzing stopped.
ReplyDeleteThe Showdown will be the exciting race. These guys will have to go like a bat out of hell.
ReplyDeleteFinally live but had to blow off the last 25 minutes of Raceday. Oh well
ReplyDeleteThe rained stopped awhile ago, but no we have a thunder/lightening storm coming through and it's fading our satellite again. Hope it doesn't wait for the green flag to completely go off!
ReplyDelete@darbar- Yep I'm getting it too. DirecTV SD
ReplyDelete@JD--there's a very SHORT list of who should be allowed to sing it and if they're going to keep it instrumental the Horny Frogs and Military should do it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bevo. At least I know I'm not blowing out my surround sound

and, may i add, tight?
NWS just updated- charlotte for T-storms mainly after midnight, we may successfully dodge weather for the third weak in a row
ReplyDeleteYAY we get to chat with Marcos!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be a kick in the pants if JJ won the race?
ReplyDeleteBest pre-race show ever. No Myers and very short!
ReplyDeleteBTW, no Digger cartoon!!!
ReplyDeleteEverything working OK for those of you watching the All-Star Buddy?
ReplyDeleteWhy are there 2 different groups of cars??
ReplyDeleteJD I just went to Race Buddy and it says it doesn't start until 9pm
ReplyDeleteDot's going to be happy!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnybody getting anything on Buddy? Box says 7 ET but the pop-up says 9 ET
ReplyDeleteIt really doesn't seem fair when SPEED helps certain drivers campaign for votes. Just like they did with Kenny Wallace a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteJD, from what I can tell, AB is only going to be used during the big show.
ReplyDeleteI believe all star buddy starts at 9pm.
ReplyDeleteBevo I'm getting the same even with the link that was posted earlier.

just logged on using bill h's link: what i have is the home page w/the 4 drivers and mosaic options but nothing else. can't click anything open right now. what am i not doing? am using safari as always.
JD I think RB will only be on the All Star Race as they only have 4 choices TS, KB, JG & Jr and a mosiac for all four.
ReplyDeleteok, never mind. the 9pm start of race buddy makes sense -- thought maybe i was missing something that said 7 or 7:30 pm.
ReplyDeleteBlaney will probably race like crazy in this Showdown so he can S&P in the main event and collect a check.
ReplyDeleterb not working. just as red says.
ReplyDeleteSo, it starts at 9PM? Thanks, I wish the Turner guys had told me that.
ReplyDeletePammH there are two groups of cars going around the track because the pace cars goes the speed that is set for pit road and if they had one group just going around the cars near the end of the pack would not get a good reading on the speed, so they break it up into two groups.
ReplyDeleteIf you notice next time this is done at every track and race.
Yeah I wonder if we'll have any S&P'ers.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you with TrackPass, has anyone else noticed that the "Launch" buttons are grayed out on the TrackPass page? I had to enter PitCommand and Scanner from the NASCAR.com front page. Is it just my browsers?
ReplyDelete--KarenB
Jenna Fryer on Twitter:
ReplyDelete"Shana Mayfield is at the track. She was at the car. Took a few questions, but only related to the team."
It doesn't help when one part of the site says 7pm and the other says 9pm
ReplyDeleteWhere is Dot?
ReplyDeleteYup it looks like the RB thingie starts with the main event
Carl long fist S&P
ReplyDeleteKaren I have been using the front page of Nascar.com all season, I remember having problems earlier in the year and never went back once I found that link
ReplyDeleteSilly comments by Cousin Carl
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've had a problem. Thanks, NRF.
ReplyDelete--KarenB
nrf, I also go to the link provided for TNT's Race Buddy. I think it was Gina24 that provided that for us. Not sure.
ReplyDeleteFull screen replay. uurrgghhhh.....
ReplyDeletePoor Vickers.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm gonna hurl if an admitted start-and-park car makes it to the big show.
--KarenB
JD,
ReplyDeleteGuess it's safe to assume that this isn't the Speed Truck production crew but the Fox Cup gang behind the scenes?
really disjointed coverage so far
ReplyDeleteThey need to red flag this or more than half the race will be under yellow.
ReplyDeleteIs that Tony or Joey in the 20?
ReplyDeleteI agree, NRF. It's not fair to the guys with decent cars way at the back who have to work their way through the field due to the weird starting line-up.
ReplyDelete--KarenB
Joey. Tony drives the 14
ReplyDeletebevo,
ReplyDeleteIt's a hybrid. Hence the mess.
Where is hotaru-raganbaby, Ragan's No. 1 fan?
ReplyDelete
