Race On Hold Due To Rain: Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From LMS On Fox
7PM - The race is on hold due to rain and Fox has returned to regular programming. TDP will update you on the progress of drying the track.
This is a huge telecast for the NASCAR on Fox gang. There is only one more race for this TV team after today. It has been a very long season for Fox filled with all kinds of issues both on and off the track.
At 5PM it will be Chris Myers leading Fox onto the air from the Hollywood Hotel. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. These two will have an hour to fill before the green flag comes at 6:05PM. That may be delayed even further if the pesky rain showers that have been falling on LMS all day continue.
Mike Joy is the leader of the Fox team and he should be in all his glory at LMS. Larry McReynolds and Waltrip will join him in the booth for the call of this very long race. Down on pit road will be Steve Byrnes, Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda.
This race has a ton of great story lines and there will be plenty to talk about even if the rain delays the start. From Mark Martin and his resurgence to the success of Tony Stewart the on-track stories are good. Away from the track, Jeremy Mayfield's drug suspension and the Tuesday driver meeting called by NASCAR are certainly interesting.
Look for Digger to make his presence known as Fox only has two more race days to sell merchandise. How much of the animation and graphics will be used should be interesting to watch. No word on whether another cartoon will be inserted in the pre-race show.
Fox continues to struggle in the pits and has used all different kinds of triple and quad splits. LMS pit road is straight, so we may see the old quad box back again. At least the graphics for the race off have been good recently.
One new wrinkle in the Fox coverage has been side-by-side video boxes at the finish. One shows the winner slowing down while the other shows a wideshot of the rest of the field finishing. It was an improvement over not showing any car but the winner finishing the race, but does not work very well. Both ESPN and SPEED simply use a wideshot and let the lead lap cars or trucks race to the stripe.
No doubt Kyle Busch will be on Waltrip's mind at this track. It should be fun to listen to the commentary as things sort-out on the track. Busch is often spectacular at this track, but this race is the longest on the circuit.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by on this holiday weekend.
Why was the start moved back to 6 p.m.?
ReplyDeleteWeather radar looks horrible. I don't see them racing tonight. And with a 60% chance of rain all day on Monday and Tuesday as well, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up running this on the next off-weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt was originally listed as 5:45PM. Now it is posted as 6PM. No clue.

ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the 6pm start is for track-drying?? considering I gather it's been drizzling/showering throughout the day
ReplyDeleteNo clue on the wetness yet. Anyone have an update from the track?
ReplyDeletehmm based on raceday track looked wet, but they have people/stages on front straight instead of jet dryers?!?
ReplyDeletefrom a purely selfish perspective, i am hoping for a delayed start tonight. i have to travel to the in-laws this evening which is about two hrs away. if the delay continues, i will get to seen the end of the race.
ReplyDeleteAccording to CNN weather, mostly cloudy as of 1:30ish (4:30ish) to you on the right.
ReplyDeleteRight now they are doing the military demonstration so there are people on the frontstretch. But I would have the dryers on the backstretch so that all we hae to dry is the frontstretch.
ReplyDeletetoo bad they can't just fly the helicopters around the track a few times to dry it.
ReplyDeleteOn again off again showers all day at LMS. Per Carl Edwards' facebook page which was given to me by a friend lol.
ReplyDeleteIts been raining though all day which is what I heard from folks that live out there

ReplyDeleteI really dislike the intro music. Sounds totally out of place IMO.

ReplyDeleteStill trying to confirm if the start time is being pushed back.
ReplyDeletea lot of empty stands for 1 hour out, looks like people think it may take longer than a year
ReplyDeletedigger is on, i am changing the channel
ReplyDeleteAnother Digger rerun.
ReplyDeletelonger than an hour
ReplyDeletecould be a good race to tivo
Thunderstorms training through here (about 25 miles sw of the track), heading Northeast. Exect a lot of delays. I suspect they held the Shawn Johnson feature to use as rain filler tonight. They'll need it. Weather radar: http://www.weather.com/outlook/events/sports/map/interactive/USNC0299?from=36hr_topnav_sports
ReplyDeleteFrom Jeff Gluck, it appears that this is from the drivers' meetingL
ReplyDelete5:48 pm national anthem; 5:54 engines fired
JD Did you see any of Raceday, Ken Squire did a great piece about Memorial Day and so forth and then Jimmy asked him what he waould say to Nascar at the meeting on Tues and Kenny asked him about Helio winning at Indy, WHAT. Did you guys even watch his piece, Ken handled it well I would have slapped them

ReplyDeleteHad one question answered, always wondered how early they taped some of those bumpers. JJ with shaved head, guess not so far in advance
ReplyDeleteNRF,
ReplyDeleteI caught that too even saw JR look at kenny with a puzzled look as if to say "where the heck are you going with this?"
One can only wonder how many of the curious casual sports fans that switched over to Fox after watching the end of the Indy 500 just rolled their eyes at the cartoon, said something like 'Are You Serious?', and went channel surfing elsewhere, never come to back to Fox the rest of the night.
ReplyDeleteNot exactly the best way to build interest in the upcoming event and keep the casual fans tuned in, in my personal opinion anyway.
Green/yellow #2 of the weekend
ReplyDeleteNrf, I really think Jimmy wants to speak his mind on the meeting. Just don't know where he will have a chance to do that.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping he might be the special guest on TWIN. Instead, it will be Marcos Ambrose.
NRF,
ReplyDeleteI saw that too including JR shoot kenny a look as if to say "where are you going with that?"
Boy they've been talking up this Toyota Camry Hybrid pace car all weekend haven't they? Wonder how much they paid for that.
ReplyDeleteLove that trophy!
ReplyDeleteI want to win it!
NASCAR has this whole going green thing in progress.
ReplyDeleteTough to find one of those rear wheel drive Camrys at the dealership.
Just watched the Indy 500 and was impressed all the way through by the professionalism till the end and then I put on FOX and saw the Digger cartoon, DW, Meyers, and HEY Hammond, the worst broadcaster in any sport on TV. This clown act FOX gives us needs to be changed and very soon.Hopefully they will see this approach is turning off way too many viewers and retool for next year. I do not look forward to writing this type of comment but my enjoyment is determined by the race coverage and this is brutal.
ReplyDelete@ JD, and one with a carb.
ReplyDeleteJD its been tough trying to find a rear wheel drive Monte Carlo, Impala SS, Taurus, Fusion or Intrepid for a long time...
ReplyDeletetwitter Nascar green flag 603
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:24PM,
ReplyDeleteWaltrip and Hammond have been on SPEED this week covering practice and qualifying.
Watching them on SPEED is totally different. It's like night and day.
That is the only thing that bugs me about all this, it's an act.
Anon, 5:24,
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%. ABC/ESPN's coverage was darn good I thought, with very professional individuals calling a great race that at times came hard to announce since the whole field was single file. The only thing I didn't like was the overload of the GoDaddy.com commercials and the camera work at the checkered flag. Those are SMALL, minute problems compared to FOX's coverage of the races this year. For a sport that has more fans and viewers, you'd think it would be the other way around. If they want to improve their broadcasts for next year, just compare tonight's Digger-filled comedy fest with ABC/ESPN's professional coverage of the Indy 500.
Fox seems to be ignoring the weather entirely, Chris Myers says they're going to "roll this thing on time,... at the moment"!
ReplyDeleteMichael Strahan....how did I miss that?
ReplyDeleteIf it rains we get to watch a reply of the Monaco Grand Prix on Speed. (Please don't mention the winner!)
ReplyDeleteI love Johnson's paint scheme
ReplyDeleteI see green all over the southeast on weather.com. Rain doesn't even seem like a factor on Fox. What is going on?
ReplyDeleteRemember when Humpy re-inacted the invasion of Grenada and when they blew up a fake building it broke windows in the hospitality suites?
ReplyDeleteI sure do miss that guy.
JD - yeah, my 10 year old Camry is front wheel drive. Hubby drives a camaro because he wanted a rear-wheel drive car but that thing is so uncomfortable to sit in for more than 2 minutes. I'm not too high on these hybrids here in Houston especially.
ReplyDeleteThey just interviewed JR, and man is that guy completely sapped of confidence or what?
ReplyDeleteLOL. Humpy. Always a character.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see him on tv maybe with his own show or something. ISC would be wise to use his services at places that need draws like Fontana, Michigan, and some others
"We discuss the state of the sport every week" Yet no discussion of Mayfield or Long. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteI tried to push for that Humpy interview show on SPEED but it never happened.
ReplyDeleteStory in the media about his treatment at LMS earlier this weekend.
Link or anything to it?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Official's Radio, pre-race will go on as planned. After the anthem, they will push the cars out of the garage.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNah, that would just stir things up. Check Google under news.
ReplyDeleteThanks Robyn!
ReplyDeleteAnyone seen cars on the grid?
ReplyDeleteAs best as I can tell, rain in about 30 minutes.
ReplyDeleteoh dear the bugler is not doing well..
ReplyDeleteAt Indy they had a pre-recorded track for Taps -- the bugler didnt even move his fingers. Maybe they should have done that for the 600, as the horn player just botched the notes on the tribute.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm wondering how much of this is "hold the audience" taking place.
ReplyDeleteNot to be unAmerican, but not a good anthem.
ReplyDeletewe need a new plane cue guy...
ReplyDeleteno sound for the ATHEM TODAY? wow bummer move at beginning
ReplyDeleteyea, sorry to say that Taps was rough
Looks like someone at JHE forgot the audio. Timing of the jets off too. Of all places for that to happen.
ReplyDeletei know you may not believe this, but the high humidity very well may have been the problem for the bugler
ReplyDeleteanon - the bugler was playing a trumpet. when you play taps on a trumpet instead of a bugle you don't move your fingers
ReplyDeleteNow on hold for start command...
ReplyDeleteThat track just hasn't been the same since Bruton axed Humpy.
ReplyDeleteI sure would like to hope Humpy has been talking to the folks in Daytona. Maybe they would listen to him just to spite Bruton.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletebugles don't have valves like a trumpet, hence you don't move your fingers to play taps because you can't on an actual bugle
ReplyDeletehaus, I was thinking the same thing about the humidity and the bugle.
ReplyDeleteHaving tootled a bugle in the drill team eons ago, I well remember the difficulty on the hot, humid September nights at the football games.
When he used to jump stuff the drivers would come and watch.
ReplyDeleteThe School bus was a crowd fav!
54 minutes into the pre-race is the first talk about weather
ReplyDeleteNepotism - it's not just NASCAR :)
ReplyDeleteMeyers sure was tip-toeing with his comments talking about the weather and the cars being lined up.
ReplyDeleteSounds like more rain is hitting the track in a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteMike will give us the scoop.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking Larry Mac's jacket
ReplyDeleteCould have been a real bugle at Indy. Trumpets have keys real bugles don't.
ReplyDeleteFrank in Sebring,
booth guys looking snazzy tonight!
ReplyDeleteThey're pushing the cars out to the starting grid. Generators are not allowed out. They will fire the engines 7 minutes after the last car is pushed out.
ReplyDeleteI miss Humpy too :(
ReplyDeletebooth guys looking snazzy tonight!
ReplyDelete"Dark clouds in the distance" as they show black clouds right over the track :)
ReplyDeleteJust how close is the rain? Why all the time wasting? Throw the yellow/green flag.
ReplyDeleteRain is less than 2 mi south of the speedway right now. Just talked to a friend on Mallard Creek Church rd and she says it's raining there now.
ReplyDeleteOk I guess it's a BUGLE you don't move your fingers? I missed that.
ReplyDeleteI saw a cornet, move your fingers.. and sliding trumpet and trombone (Folks think sliding trumpet is a baby trombone) The latter two you slide the distance for the sound of course.
Last night's cajun/dixieland had an original member from Louisiana with his cajun push button accordion and fiddle. so we heard 3 fiddles at times and fabulous 'cordion, but I digress. :)
I forgive bugle for the humidity issue...if indeed that was it
WOW clouds look low and dark behind Mikey just now!!
I thought they were suppose to fire engines??
What's the deal?
@ Robyn, are you at the track?
ReplyDeleteOh by the way...jet dryers are on the frontstretch and dark clouds are over their heads. But don't worry, we are ready to go racing!
ReplyDeleteChaos.
Can't be very close to green flag, still got a lot of fans down in the pits
ReplyDeletenot close to anything - drivers are not even in their cars
ReplyDeleteLook at the clouds behind Krista!
ReplyDeleteLots of Joey Logano fluff.
ReplyDeleteRain is imminent, looking to be starting to pass over the track on the radar
ReplyDeleteLook. Hammond jumped on my wagon
ReplyDeletePRN booth says they can see rain about 1/4 mile from Speedway, and that a full wet would require about 1.5 to 1 3/4 hours to dry track.
ReplyDeleteGreat.
ReplyDeleteIf it downpours we'll be in a 2 plus hour delay. Took over 2 after ESPN took the air yesterday and that was after some half hour of drying efforts already in progress.
ReplyDeleteGonna race to halfway I think. Front stretch looks soaked. Here we go! Forget Meyers we got our update!
Chris Myers says it is raining "a little" there...as the umbrellas and car covers come out.
ReplyDeleteWe can see the people running all over the place and literally hear the rain. Who is Chris trying to lie to?
2.5 hours before engines are even fired if it stops now is my best guess.
ReplyDeleteWell, Fox can't ignore it now, it's pouring hard now... But Chris Myers says it's dry where he is. Maybe that's the problem, he can't see outside and if it's not raining on his head, it's not raining period. :)
ReplyDeleteit's raining it's pouring...the old man is snoring
ReplyDelete:sigh:
should be interesting to see if we are going to see the All-Star race recap program as standby programming.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this isn't going to get started on time guys!
ReplyDeletePockgrass just twittered spotters OFF the roof due to heavy rain. This is going to an even longer day that I though. Sigh
ReplyDeleteUm, they've lost the track.....
ReplyDeleteLooks like the Hotel has a leak
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't look so good..
ReplyDeleteJo, they never had the track.
ReplyDelete=p
Guess its a good time to play some video games for a few. Cya guys in a bit.
So, we are looking at 8PM at the earliest as a start for one of the longest races in the sport. Whew...
ReplyDeleteThe Hotel has a hot air leak, it's coming from Myers' and Hammond's heads!
ReplyDelete@ bevo, I saw that drop too.
ReplyDeleteAt what radar was Chris Myers looking? "it looked like we had some openings here..."
ReplyDeleteOne positive thing here: thanks to the miracle of HD, I can see the rain drops clear as a bell. Btw, great shot of the rain moving down the back stretch.
ReplyDelete-D
I ordered pizza. That is my plan.
ReplyDeleteCarl's product placement gimmick was the best one I have seen in years. Besides, ducks like water.
ReplyDeleteI will check back in later...on my way to the in-laws now.
ReplyDeleteThe background tvs in the Hollywood Hotel look horrible with the magnified rain drops.
ReplyDeleteBrewers - Twins on ESPN tonight :)
ReplyDeleteAlso available on ESPN360
I just had one JD.
ReplyDeleteAt least we have vets like Krista and Dick and Matt to get great interviews while we wait..
I like the one that had the real window option. This version makes it tough sometimes.
ReplyDeleteGymmie I don't expect that Dick Berggren is sleeping quite yet (oh no I sound like Myers...)
ReplyDeleteGreat question by Dick I thought.
ReplyDeleteLatest update from the track is 8:30PM for possible start.
ReplyDeleteGive everyone in the stands a Shamwow, the track will be dry in minutes.
ReplyDeleteBill H
GREAT breakdown by Joy!!
ReplyDeleteNice 'spanation of the Carl Long situation by Mike Joy. Great work.
ReplyDelete-D
Whew! Tell it Mike Joy!
ReplyDeleteIm with Larry Mac!
ReplyDeleteNASCAR did their job, its the Stock Car Commission's job to overturn or reduce this.
YAY DW. I hope smarter brains prevail on the appeal.
ReplyDeleteIt was funny to see everyone run to stay dry. "Take cover!"
ReplyDeletecatching up again...
ReplyDeleteI had a friend with a trumpet... I couldn't even make a sound come out of it try as I might...I always cut these guys slack; you're also doing it in front of thousands of people.
Too bad they messed up the audio on the anthem. And I loved the bagpipes!
Speaking of weather & racing...the other morning Jim Cantore said it looked like rain for Charlotte and something about 'we hope it holds out for you Humpy...' I guess Jim doesn't know Humpy's gone. Made me sad to think of it.
Fix the COT and start the races earlier.
ReplyDeleteThis is what we have waited for from this crew all season long!
ReplyDeleteNow we get it because of rain? Can't these guys put two and two together?
myers isnt even listening to waltrip - in middle of him talking you hear him say "how many trucks do they have here?"
ReplyDeleteYeah JD. Maybe this rain is a blessing in disguise. This is the SPEED attitude right here. The FOX script has been tossed
ReplyDeleteThis segment with the broadcast booth and Hollywood Hotel talking seriously about NASCAR-related issues is what I've been looking for from Fox for the longest time, it's just a shame that it takes a rain delay to get it and it's not a normal part of the Fox pre-race shows to begin with.
ReplyDeleteIf it gets to be too late for the start, I will have divided attention... Orlando Magic are playing the Cavs tonight.
ReplyDeletewow. Some really interesting honest dialogue.
ReplyDeleteMaybe some changes will finally be made for the better.
JD-
ReplyDeleteCare for some Colony Grill..down the road from Harbor and GES?

Well, if we gotta go through hours of rain, imho, I'm glad we have Fox. I was sittin' here thinking, "who would I rather listen to for 2 or more hours of fill", the good doctor, or Chris Myers?
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to share that thought.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletePRN has gone into their typical post-race show as a time filler. I never get to listen to it.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand Top Gear... my parents watch it and I find it annoying.
ReplyDeleteDang Chris is NOT even listening to the answer to the question he asked the booth? Asking "how many trucks are here"
ReplyDeleteToo bad. the booth was speaking what the FANS had been thinking.
We need a GIANT SPONGE right now....to absorb moisture
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteActually I think Dr. P could do a better rain fill than play-by-play, assuming the control booth would let him go.
ReplyDeleteMike, thanks for the memories. Been a long time since the Speedvision days!
ReplyDelete@Glenn- that's the choice???
ReplyDeleteI'll take a root canal.
Fox wasnt on for three hours pre race but it may seem like that.
ReplyDeleteI was enjoying the best Indy500 I'd seen ever!! :)
I hope they go back to the booth and let those guys talk about other NASCAR topics. That was great!
ReplyDeletewell I look at it this way, now I get my triple-header of racing without having to get up at 7:30 (Monaco replay is on speed now)
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIf you believe weather.com and their moving graphic weather, another big rain cell is on its way.
ReplyDeleteI know how to get around Orlando, does that count?
ReplyDelete@Sonic--LOL!
ReplyDeleteGlad they spoke about Germy and Carl. Why I understand the penalty for Carl (as much as I disagree with it) I do hope the appeals board has some sense and lowers it and reinstates his hard card so he can do his job.
Agreed glad to have the Fox boyz and girlz for the rain delay! They all have relationships with the drivers and they have fun chatting/joking around. Unlike BSPN where they know a dumb question is about to come or be asked how they "feel"
If NASCAR wants to go GREEN, how about shortening some of these races?? they did that in the 70's during gas crisis.
ReplyDeleteMight be a good thing to do now, too.
Just sayin'
Dang bevo, I didn't realize I had a choice:)
ReplyDeleteThat was good discussion about the things going on in the sport.
We can use more of that.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI suspect Myers was told to quash the honest talk.
ReplyDelete@ dear Sophia, they really didn't shorten the races. They just didn't count some of the laps that were run.
ReplyDeleteThree words : Thompson's Water Seal
ReplyDeleteYou guys have the broadcast? It's off the air for me, with a pretty pink screen nonetheless. Must be a local problem.
ReplyDeleteThe Fox pit folks just seem to get so much more out of the drivers. Not 1 driver looks nervous about the question coming.

ReplyDeleteIf ESPN classic were smart, they'd rerun the Indy 500 starting at 7 PM. They'd fit nicely into the rain delay here.

ReplyDelete@Jack in PA--I have 3 rooms on Justin (2 on mute only 1 actually playing) feeding from 3 different states (CO, NY AND VT) and they're all up and going
ReplyDeleteTakes all kinds to make a world.
ReplyDeleteCan you guys keep me abreast as to times they're mentioning and if it's raining? My FOX affiliate is off the air at the moment... keeping my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteTractors going back on the track.
ReplyDeleteGymmie,
ReplyDeleteI'm in Northeast PA and my affiliate's been out for about a half hour or so. Checked a couple other people who have different providers and their's is out too.
@DOT - sorry, I checked out for a bit.
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm not at the track. Just listening to the Official's Radio from Track Pass. But now the regular OR person is in the other chat room I'm in, so I've been slacking.
I want to see them slide through the grass. I love seeing that.
ReplyDeleteSirius 113 will have the Officials radio if the race ever starts.
ReplyDelete@ Robyn, I was wondering how you were getting the inside info. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOT but Vitor Meira admitted to Methodist Hospital with fractured L1 and L2 vertebrae. Back brace, non-operative management. Twitter
ReplyDelete@Jack--must be a PA thing :(. Hope it comes back...
ReplyDelete@JD--agreed...it does take all kinds :(
Hope this is OK to post here JD just saw this tweet update on Vitor and I know a lot of folks watched Indy and may not go back to the Indy thread (unless comments are cut off already). If not I understand :)
ReplyDeleteIndyTalk Vitor Meira admitted to Methodist Hospital with fractured L1 and L2 vertebrae. Back brace, non-operative management. #indy500
Jack SE PA is OK, sorry but at this rate none of us may see a race tonight
ReplyDeleteThanks, I was looking for an update on Vitor. Nasty crash he had.
ReplyDeleteWell, John coulda run the double if he wanted to lol
ReplyDeleteNow what do you want to do?
ReplyDeleteYou gotta give big credit to Chris Myers. For all the knocking of his jokey demeanor, he is really showing why he is one of the top pros in the business tonight. It is really hard to vamp and direct the show from his chair in a rain situation like this, and he is doing a masterful job in a very difficult position for any broadcaster. He's kept the show moving and it never felt like it was flying by the seat of its pants, as it surely was back in the booth. All credit to Myers.
ReplyDeleteim switching to F1 on speed thank you
ReplyDeleteWhy are they lying to us on Fox?? CM just talked about an "hour" delay!! Claire B. Lang is saying on Sirius that she's hearing we won't start before 9pm. From what I can see from the weather map, about the time they get the track dryed, they are gonna get dumped on again.
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible for Vitor, this was after his car caught fire on pit road, too! I believe he was the runner up last year? It could always be worse, however.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Dad - Now that is a nice family, race related show to have on during a rain delay.
ReplyDeleteRadio is going off the air until 8PM. I accidentally found a way to stream it just now, hehe.
ReplyDeleteThey are lying on FOX because if everyone turns off their TV now it will be a disaster for them. Even with the rain delay, they still are logging the ratings, and it is their job to keep people tuned in as long as possible, even if they end up calling the race off in 2 hours.
ReplyDelete
