Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Richmond On Fox
The umbrellas came out around 5:30PM just as the track was beginning to dry from an earlier shower. The weather radar is showing a group of storms over Richmond, but there is a break in the weather after that line.
The NASCAR on Fox team may be facing a very long night of racing and possibly a delay in the event until Monday.
Chris Myers is up first from the Hollywood Hotel at 7PM. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. Look for Talladega aftermath, weather forecasts and a review of the Kyle vs. Junior scenario from last season.
Waltrip moves up and joins Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds if and when the race begins. Joy did monster duty for SPEED on Friday and has to be commended for his performance.
Luckily, Fox has the best crew of pit reporters on TV and hopefully access to the drivers will continue to be available. Slightly before 6PM, NASCAR moved all the cars from the grid to the garage area and put them under cover.
This post will serve to host your comments about the NASCAR on Fox telecast of the Sprint Cup Series on Fox. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.
Thanks for taking some time out of your life to stop by The Daly Planet.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 720 Newer› Newest»With the forecast calling for rain until about Tuesday, one way or another they're getting to halfway tonight.
Listening to the 24s radio feed. Says he can't see his pit sign from the track. lol
Middle of the 9th Inning. The Braves have to bat before FOX can pick up the race.
Does BV get credit for leading the first lap?
Slow... but going.
Haven't really gotten an update on weather conditions, so I don't know if anything's on the way over there.
Yes, vickers gets credit. laps are counting as if it were a normal caution now.
I don't think Speed will dump the race for AMA. The AMA race is from 4/26.
Once they turn them loose, it is going to be a sprint to halfway for sure.
If they go to full green flag within a minute or 2 after the Braves-Astros game gets over, it's obvious of what was going on.
@ Dot,
Yes, BV has led the first 4 laps so far.
Dot Yes leading lap under caution counts, so this should too
are they really drying the track or also waiting for all baseball to be over! ? :)
got my cookie dough mixed up to bake later or in rain delay.
Had a second batch of coffee about 4pm (RARE for me but tired) Now thinking a bad idea so having glass of wine to cut down on rants-er critisms.
= :-0
Surely they aren't going to show "points as of now" under yellow. Glad Astros are ahead too they are having a terrible year!
Ask and they answer. Yes, he does.
Well, things worked out pretty well for both Fox and NASCAR.
Race green at 8PM, SPEED covered the baseball over-run and the weather cleared. Nice deal.
Geesh DW. Nice job changing the subject away from our short tracks to your brother.
(says the Track Girl)
harrumph
Gee after hearing Jeff gordon say he can't see his pit..starting to maybe understand Jr's issues.
.
.
.
maybe.
and I LIKE Jr so am not bustin' on him
GF!!!!!!
Green on SPEED for me.
@Dot--Mike just answered your question...yes he does :). Thanks anon 7:57 I thought that's how it worked but I couldn't remember since we rarely start out this way
Love it over 200 comments before the race has begun...we rule!
SPEED is sticking with the race. the motorcycle race you have to watch out for is at 10EST.
ok..appreciated DW's words after BBB!
:)
In Atlanta SPEED has pre-empted the motorcycle race.
Hanging with NASCAR on SPEED. No crawl or explanation for AMA fans.
We weren't mired in full speed racing, so lots of comms.
Guess the 66 can park it now
Blaney has the worst luck this season..what is the deal.sigh
That's one way to start and park!
awww a start and park wrecked.
Darn! Caution already! Poor Blaney :(
JD, the AMA race on SPEED right now should be a re-run, however I think there is a another race at 10EST.
Start-WRECK-and park (maybe?)
Soph what did DW say I couldn't tell
Karma for the #66. They barely have damage and they are calling Dave to the garage. Pathetic!
Poor AMA fans are clueless right about now...what? NASCAR on Fox?
@ Gymmie, yeah, I wasn't sure either. Thanks to those who answered.
Hey look, it's the king.

HaHaHa same thing I was thinking!
nrf: pit box told blaney to take it to the truck -- already. guess the resources aren't there to attempt to pound it out and fix it.
So much for the "must carry green flag" rule. Though, this is how it should have been done anyway. They learned their lesson from last year.
square butts commercial count...1
Still got baseball here in ATL.
If they switch mid sentence from Speed to Fox I'm gonna be P****.
Wow, we missed the first green flag laps, so much for contracts.
JD,
Is the SPEED simulcast nationwide, or can it be switched back in certain markets that have the race on FOX?
haus20- Keeping track on that, I see.
BBB. Lord, please don't let it rain any more is what DW said.
red- They have the resources, they just lack the effort. This is the same MSRP #90/91 Nationwide team that has parked in every race they ran.
Re: Blaney, at least they can take it back to the shop and S&P next week.
I would asume NW... we've got both channels playing the race... I just checked
SPEED will have the same programing Nationwide since it is not distributed through local stations.
Two outs in the bottom of the 9th in Atlanta - go Astros. Missing the race hopefully we'll see it shortly.
Alex, one feed nationwide. It's cable TV.
NWFan
DW said something about Please don't rain anymore..or somethin' like that. :)
How hard is it to pass 2 rookies? Good grief. SDDD already.
The Braves game is over. Not sure how quickly they will make the switch. After commercials at least.
that is an abomination for race fans in ATL, a complete violation of the NASCAR contract.
@ Alex, let us know if you have about 15 mins of commls like we did.
alex, let us know when they switch so we can watch the SPEED transfer back to reg programming.
Good sign- getting info from the pits tonight
Bevo I was thinking the same thing hopefully it's not a fluke and they keep going further down the field
The braves game ended 13 laps ago and FOX has shown commercials the entire time.
@ Alex, interesting. JD, does this mean fewer later?
alex,
all the local spots they missed in the NASCAR timeslot no doubt.
got to pay the bills!
MRN said Reutiman lost his radio w/spotter - then found a channel & now its gone too -poor Reut

well, that's enough to make you plotz right there!
Once the Braves game ended, I got a good 6-7 minutes of commercials before race coverage.
Fox in Atlanta picked up the race on lap 43 (though baseball ended around lap 25).
The end of the baseball local commercial break ended during the simulcast commercials, and until the commercials were synced up on the two feeds, I got a blue screen with this message:
Attention stations: This is the first local break of the COMBO LOCAL.
Why it takes FOX 20 laps to switch to the original programming is beyond me.
Prediction: very few cars on the lead lap soon.
Note to FOX we can't see the battle between JJ and Kevin if you keep showing the car camera!
I had typed that last comment waiting for commercials to end... It wasn't 6-7 like I said, more like 10 minutes.
SPEED back to original programming.
nice gesture, thanking speed for carrying the race while the baseball games were on.
There ya go, off go the SPEED folks to....what? celebrity race???
SPEED now showing the LB celebrity race.
wow! that's interesting Alex! :(
SPEED dropped in the Celebrity race with no warning Although it was at the same time FOX went to commercial.
Good switch here in ATL
Thanks Alex and Vicky D for keeping us updated on the Atlanta game and the Fox telecast.
Good Job!!
Did the Supercross Lites in Utah get rained out?
I MISSED any warning..speed here in Cincy just promoted Jamie Little winning some car race from last year..so that's coming on now.
JD, like I said, the Motorbike race that was supposed to air now is not very important because its is a re-run. I beleive there is a live motorcycle race at 10EST however.
This is stupid. Between reading 260+ comments here, following Twitter (for the first time), listening to my driver's radio and checking the TrackPass leader board, I haven't watched a complete lap of the race.
Who needs TV? :-)
--KarenB
Alex here in Houston after the game was over also so many commercials about 6/7 minutes as you said. Now more commercials it's hard to catch up what's going on.
JD, motorcycle race was not live.
Wow, does it get any more blatant than that?
here's hoping someone will keep us informed as to what happened with the riggs car . . .
@KarenB
I hear ya about who needs tv?
:)
Engine just died on Riggs car.
anon 8:19PM,
It was listed as an original air in the Supercross series. Do you have other info?
NAPA sponsor a through the filed will you this sucks!
Yeah the live AMA Supercross race isn't until 10, though they have taped coverage of a road race at 9. Right now is a tape delay of last week's, shouldn't be an issue.
aaarrgghhh! isn't this crap what the pre-race is for? i REALLY don't want to be watching green flag racing thru the 55's windshield while drivers talk about how to brake at richmond.
i detest this!
im sorry, 'it'?
Is it just me or does it feel like we're watching commercials with racing in between? And then there was just that napa break thing that apparently required split screens.
@ red, Ditto.
Too many useless in-car shots. Show the racing.
Karen,
Pretty soon you will be able to put your computer window, TV and any other applications on a big-screen and only have one source for info.
Whoever comes up with a good one is going to make millions.
yes, my information is not calling it an original airing.
Bumper cam? Wouldn't an outside shot have given us a better perspective? 77/26.
Fox Where Bumper Cams Are King!
JD,
DirecTV listing shows Speed with a rerun of a bike race
@jane
Yes it's all commercial all the time.
I know NASCAR needs to pay the bill but the PRODUCT PLACEMENT is getting out of hand and FORCING SPLIT SCREENS/in car cams and bumper cams. SHEESH.
Do they sponsor each batter in baseball...or each OUT in baseball. Mercy.
I'll take plate racing at Talladega rather than this snooze-fest at Richmond any day.
can this fan hope for some shots of glowing rotors as the evening gets darker? that's always been one of the best parts of short track night racing.
well there is a difference. You have you bumper cams, and you have your roof cams. I see FOX using the Roof cams more often which I like and think they are tolerable in a positional orientation sense.
Wow 20 or so switches of nothing but roof, incar, and bumper cam shots. Thats just sad.
I guess they really are the king of bumper cams (and digger TM) :)
JD, funny you should mention that. I was thinking that if someone could set up cameras around the track and let us (via computer) choose our own shots anytime we want. If you want to follow your guy, you can. Pit stops? the ones you want.
Nascar needs their own network. Maybe they can show a race rather than commercials between 4 laps of racing.
Dot I believe that is called Racebuddy
And NASCAR WONDERS why RATINGS ARE DOWN?
We never see the race.
Only the "director's cut" of toys HE wants us to see..and that totally STINKS.
Stinks, I tell ya.
word from mrn is riggs has possible "electrical issues."
But Racebuddy only comes with TNT
Why doesn't Fox use the full 16:9 display when they go to their 2-box screen? If people with old TVs can't see everything, too bad, so sad.
Thanks for the info. So, the 10PM race is live and the Utah race was rained out so we get celebrity cars instead of cycles. Hmm...
Does anyone know why Gilliland went behind the wall? The team has never start & parked before.
why do we keep coming back to the race *after* a lead change?
@ Nrf, yes, but WE would have our choice. Not the ones they pick.
nascar.com says raines(#37) is off now as well. still no word from the booth.
red said...

OH is that what they are using this week. I thought this week was 'vibration" and next week was the "electrical issues". Must have wrote it down wrong on my BS calendar.
Anybody have the weather radar up?
Wow -I can't believe under 100 laps & +300 comments. I wish I was working - between MRN & Twitter I got better coverage than tonight with tv. I just fired up old computer w/new HD screen for Fox tracker.
Could they squeeze in 1 more commercial or toy?
the 36 is NOT a start and park team. they are legit
I don't know what is going on tonight. The #71 and #36 are not S&P teams, they have attempted every race they qualifyed for. I'm confused.
Must be the way is Fox is doing it with the sponsored pieces. I notice they do stuff like that constantly during their Saturday afternoon baseball games. Everything has a sponsor.
Jo, you missed the Digger cartoon!
So if NASCAR and it's media partners say that split-screen action during commercials (like the IRL) diverts attention from the commercials doesn't it also mean that showing a cartoon character diverts attention from the product billboards when they come back to the action?
maybe I am multi tasking too much but I see WAY TOO MANY IN CAR CAMS and again. not enough wide shots..and again another IN CAR CAM.
WTH?????????
I know it's a short track.
If was in the Liv Room would turn on MRN...need to go get the boombox and tune it in to LISTEN since
"WATCHING on tv is such an interruption to the racing due to excess commercials and OVERUSE of incar/bumper cams.
Lather, rinse, repeat. same gripe.
Nobody cares.
Certainly not NA$CAR
JD, my DirecTv info says the Utah super cross race first aired on April 26.
Every time I look at the TV they're showing the view though the front window of someone's car! What the heck is up with that?
--KarenB
maybe we need a clarification of what constitutes a S&P. i thought it was the lack of a pit crew but it seems as if that may not be inclusive enough.
oh bloody hell! another split screen with logano and green flag racing.
Brake issues would make a better excuse.
According to the radar i'm seeing, there's a band of showers NW of Richmond, but it seems to have stagnated in movement.
Riggs electrical they say no back up box (other blogs/ sites) I think 71 blew up JJ spotter commented on "smoker" when he went off track
There is rain NW of Richmond near Charlottesville but it doesn't look like its moving anywhere
on the top ticker, they should change the position numbers to red if the car is at least one lap down then we would know who is on the lead lap when they don't put the time behind the leader with it.

LOL I didn't see future roadkill -I surely did not miss him LOL
Nascar.com has #71 Gilliland back on the track 15 laps down.
My definition of a S&P would be a car that has run an average number of laps per race that's less than what the pit-window average has been.

just guessing her but it's likely the booth is discussing some sort of sponsor tie-in and so we're forced to look out thru the windshield of the car carrying that sponsor.

May 2, 2009 8:35 PMGlad it's just not me. I am off to get the radio.
FOX COVERAGE STINKS
Not a race
just one constant commercial with "OCCASSIONAL SHOT OF THE RACIN"
not that they are listening
Thanks for the weather updates.
@ red
That's so bogus. You know we have trouble in TV Land when sponsors dictate race coverage.

Too funny ( sadly true too) Sophia and the comedy tour has begun!!
My neighbor works for the #71 and he said that they had to start and park tonight to make it to Darlington. They didn't even know if they were going to make it to Richmond.
Sophia, decaf time.
Wish they would just talk a bit about the teams running 25th on back.
@ Bozo & Mike 8:37, I agree.
The guys over at NASCAR Insiders were saying that team could not afford the tire bill.
Sometimes, this is a weird sport.
Annon @ 8:40 Did he mention how upset they are over that "sponsor" that fell thru?
A S&P is when a team shows up to the track with the intent to park. They can't/don't buy the amount of tires needed to race.
The reasons to Start & Park - Look at the purse money. You only make a couple thousand more dollars running 400 laps compared to 50. That gives little justification to go broke buying tires and end up as a 5 lap down roadblock. I don't agree with it, but money-wise, it makes sense.
@karenB: i completely agree in re: your bogus comment. it's infuriates me to no end and i have no patience with it at all.
my sole hope is that, when the broadcast teams read our comments, they cringe.
YESSSS!!!! OMG THEY HEARD MY IDEA!!!!
Is JR a lap down? If so, he's the LD.
what was your idea.
Good Job David - can you get them to show the race now? I'm in awe of your powers ;)

It takes quite a few commercials to make up for the billions paid NASCAR to show the races.
May 2, 2009 8:42 PM
No Kidding! It doesn't mean that we have to like it or accept it.
anon 8:42PM,
This blog was started to follow the new NASCAR TV contract. We know the deal. Thanks.
David, you are producer material!
Apparently the ticker says there are 10 cars on the racetrack.
I mentioned at Phoenix that it would be good to show the in lap plus the stop to show who really gained ground coming to the pits as well as who had a good stop
There you go. Racetrax is hard to follow. Jermy got the call.
Poor Jeremy well at least he made the race
Is Fox trying to please us with the Green Flag Pit Stop inset time?
David, how about that?
The 4 box is dead and it worked a lot better.
JJ speeding and someone lost a tire
If you know the deal, then quit whining about the commercials. They are a necessary evil. You expect Fox to take a loss?
48 got a pit road penalty to fast onto pit road per mrn ot Tonys radio I got both going
Yeah the 4 box system doesnt work. Without an overall perspective of pit road, individual stops become pointless.
Sorry been slow to comment, tore the SIRIUS apart again trying to fix it. Having MRN withdrawals
Reuts tire :(
do you think when picking pit stalls that they now are making deals with the early parkers?
Pretty interesting night in TV land so far.
SPEED as the simulcast channel, no 4-video box on pit road and graphics changes.
00 lost the tire, it was that powder coat chrome, and a #00 crew guy went to get it. Bummer for Reuti
Marcos? Dan saw a chrome tire.
bozo,
I was hoping SPEED would address that after qualifying, but they did not.
That has to be an issue.

"A S&P is when a team shows up to the track with the intent to park. They can't/don't buy the amount of tires needed to race."
i get the reason why a team is S&P. but the "traditional definition" seems to be failing us currently. and i don't know how we can determine who has an "intent" to S&P -- unless, as you intimate, they don't arrive with tires or a pit crew.
seems to me that the reality is what mike @8:37 suggests: "a car that has run an average number of laps per race that's less than what the pit-window average has been."
IF nascar was serious about S&P -- altho' they've backed off big time on that -- then they need a consistent definition.
Whew, dodged a bullet.
JJ all over the radio re which lines are are which for commitment and speeding. He is not happy camper
One of my favorites has 2 flat tires so hope nothing happens to Matt that would really ruin my night. Did ok at the horse track though, but computer is so slow tonight.
So, now SPEED is back to motorcycle racing with the correct show. I am lost as to what those guys are doing...
Nice going David! Think you can ask for Scarlett Johansson to spend the weekend with me? :)
Dot you dodged I got hit
bevo, when i have the powers to cure my own women-issues then ill take care of ya. till then we're gonna have to settle for my one home run idea per year...
Sorry, Nrf.
I gotcha Red. If Nascar were serious about the situation, they need to fix the payout system to no longer make parking an option. I doubt they will do anything though.
so if i don't win the pole, i'll pick behind front row joe because i know that stall will be free after 20 laps. has to be someone's strategy
david, interesting to see Fox changing things in the middle of this run.
Remember, the fox producer is also the TNT producer. Will be interesting to see if they carry it over.
bozo, that idea only works if you qualify behind front row joe though since you pick in order of how you qualify
@bozo: yeah, that's been in my thoughts for a while now. maybe i need to start paying more attention to the pit stall selections on jayski.
Do we know what happened to the pole sitter? Did I miss it? BV is 30th.
DOt missed pit road the first time, lost a lap
we need a journalist to do a report on start/park team and what the financial break down is.. do they really make enough at richmond to make it worthwhile..how much?
If you don't make it past the number of laps for two full fuel runs, you shouldn't get any purse money.
I gotta give FOX props for the incredible HD pictures. The cars look like little jewels running around out there under the lights. Very pretty (if I can use that adjective to describe a NASCAR race).
--KarenB
A S&P team doesn't even try to make it to the first round of pit stops. I was at Watkins Glen last year and saw one of the 2 MSRP teams "set up" their pit stall. One pit box and two crew guys not in fire-proof uniforms, which must be the NASCAR-mandated minimum requirement after Joe Ruttman got parked in early '04 for not having a pit crew at Rockingham. They put all their effort into a fast qualifying lap (Terry Cook's starting positions this season as proof) and drop out for bogus reasons after 5 to 20 laps.
JD, I like that they are willing to adjust. Just because the season started, it shouldnt limit the production crew or network to a box that is established in Daytona or California. FOX was good for a long time of adapting to what the fans wanted, over the last few years its been rough but I think progress has been made. Now if they just get rid of the "flagstand" camera and run that shot from across pit road instead I might be a wee bit happier. For some reason that angle just bugs the heck out of me since 50% of the shot is flagman/grandstand.
@bozo - A car magazine (Car & Driver, I think) had an article on MSRP Motorsports a few months ago.
Why did NASCAR drop the S&P issue? For full car count? How unfair to the real Odd Wads.
@red - The S&P teams usually qualify mid-pack, so the good teams generally pick their pit stall before the S&P teams do.
NASCAR never made S&P an issue though. The freelance media did.
NASCAR has not even acknowledged S&P even exists...
well, that was a serious lack on context there, guys! obviously, the producer called for that replay of the 7 slamming into the 1 but there was no explanationas to why it happened. sorta just hung out there.
So DW said Jr would run well tonight, so far midpack is the best they've been. What excuse does he make for them on the Darlington pre-race next week if they can't turn it around tonight?
OK I think the S&P are having their own race, 71 back on track to get in front of all the others and now he's gone again. Sad. Jeremy is back, actually he's only 4 laps behind so he wasn't gone long good for him
