Live Blogging The Nationwide Series From Montreal (2PM ET - ESPN2)

There should be an opportunity for a very interesting pre-race show from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal today.

The field for this event normally contains some Canadian drivers, but this year the list is even more international. Familiar names like Max Papis, Patrick Carpentier and Jaques Villeneuve are in the field. Also racing Sunday are Jean Francois Dumoulin, Alex Tagliani and Antonio Perez.

On the American side, Jeffrey Earnhardt is back as is Brad's brother Brian Keselowski. Familiar road course ringers include Boris Said, Ron Fellows and Andy Lally. It should be a challenge for ESPN to get the fans up to speed on the line-up.

Marty Reid will call the play-by-play with Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree alongside. No real indication of why Randy LaJoie is not on the telecast and that is a shame. LaJoie is closely identified with this series and works very well with Wallace and Reid. LaJoie provides the fun with his comments and that will no doubt be missed on this telecast.

Dave Burns is on pit road with Jamie Little and Shannon Spake. Burns will probably be hosting the pre-race show as he has in the past for these stand-alone races. In many ways, having the host roaming pit road is more effective than three men in suits sitting in an infield studio.

This road course has seen its share of TV adventures. From the rain tire debacle to the Robby Gordon vs. Marcos Ambrose slam-fest, the track seems to make for tight tempers whatever the weather.

The challenge for ESPN's crew is to keep the leaders updated while searching for the best racing on the track. Unlike an oval where the director can keep one designated camera on the leaders at all times, a road course requires keeping track of multiple cars while continuing to cut cameras constantly.

The use of in-car cameras has been a huge issue since ESPN took over the Sprint Cup Series. It's almost as if the network has discovered this technology for the first time. In a recent race, the director actually cut to an in-car camera angle in the middle of a high speed crash on a superspeedway. Viewers saw nothing but smoke and blurred images.

In Montreal, the TV team will have a new challenge. The director must first show the cars and establish their position in the race and on the track before cutting in-car or the TV viewers will have no point of reference. This is not Watkins Glen, where familiar turns are easy to identify even from the in-car angle.

The weather is a 30% chance of showers with a high of 70 degrees. Looks like this may be a solid road course race for TV after all. The diversity of the field may lead to some outstanding racing and that is exactly what the Nationwide Series needs right now.

This post will serve to host your comments before, during and after the Montreal race on ESPN2. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by.

  1. I am so excited for this race. ITs been very entertaining the last two years. Hope the coverage is good.

  2. Little early and a bit OT. Did you read on Jayski's that Penske and Andretti, in a IRL meeting, asked that start time for INDY 500 be moved back to 11AM (ET) so NASCAR guys could race? Hope so. We thought this past year was our last, unless something big changed...this would do it!

Word veri: oveniza. Is this where you cook your pizza?!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Diane, it's a TV issue. Should be interesting to see what ESPN has to say about that topic, especially since they do not televise the 600 in Charlotte on the same day.

It's going to take a major player to get that situation sorted out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. @ WCD, I read that too. Made me wonder if Tony George somehow was sabotaging the start time to keep NASCAR drivers out.

Speaking of sabotage, maybe someone in the production truck can do that to the bumper cam shots.

Maybe Randy isn't in Canada because he didn't get a passport in time.

Think Carl will let Marcos lead the first lap?

Before I was going to send this, I read JDs comment. Now I guess BSPN could be the saboteur.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well, it is hard to get two sides together that have nothing in common.

IRL is convinced the later in the day, the bigger the TV ratings. NASCAR still starts on time and they cannot push that back because of the ridiculous race length.

Like I said, this is going to take a mediator who is a heavy hitter and can address both sides.

Want my suggestion? His name is Humpy....

    ReplyDelete
  6. JD...even before Humpy left SMI I have been saying all over the Internet that he or somebody like him is one thing that the ICS has been lacking (the Gene Simmons thing was a total joke). On the other hand, there's a lot more broken with that series and it will need more than a good promoter to fix it...although, IMO, finally getting rid of Tony George was a giant step forward.

I could go on and on about that but it would take us way off topic. I'll just close for now that I am one of the people that deeply believes that all racing series benefit when there is more than one that is strong.

Here's hoping for a great and safe race today at Montréal!

    ReplyDelete
  7. This might be a preview of things to come for the Nationwide Series, especially where a shared weekend with Grand Am is concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  8. They told the IRL that Cup guys being in the race would give them at least one ratings point. If you could get some heavy hitters, probably more. I figured Humpy might have been one of the instigators to start with.

Montreal's a very quaint city. Carl needs to watch those rumble strips today...it was a great Grand am race, anyways. Gaughan was in it too, looked like he had a lot of fun. And there was the obligatory Dempsey sighting...

Good grief, bimbo girls to escort the drivers?

    ReplyDelete
  9. that was a good interview with Fellows. Amazing road course driver. He does a lot to promote karting in Canada too.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Afternoon, all!
    I missed y'all last week.

    JD,
Amen to the Humpy and Burns observations. Burns is a pro that combines humor and knowledge. Very entertaining. I, too, wish that LaJoie would have been in the booth over Rusted. BSPN does realize that he is a past champion, don't they?
Humpy could promote mud wrestling at a convent. IMS should at least utilize him as an advisor.

  11. Patrick, we tried to advocate putting Dave in the Infield Pit Studio and moving AB into the PXP position, but nothing happened.

Dave has a great sense of humor and the same ability to laugh at himself that makes AB so popular.

I think we are going to miss LaJoie on this broadcast. No one to keep Rusty in line.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Agree about Dave but we would miss him on pit road, some days he's the only appropriate voice down there.

    ReplyDelete
  13. and the obligatory poutine shot...still, they're capturing the culture a bit...

    ReplyDelete
  14. the thing about good pit reporters is that you barely notice them if they do their job well. When they screw up, then it sticks out...I was kinda thinking the same, I'd hate to lose him on pit road.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I"m starting to think about a trip to Montreal, they're doing a good job of talking up the city.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Any bets that Carls' Rolex crash will show up on Speed Report several times?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Indy moving up the start time = smart. Though getting Tony to come over is out of the fold now probably due to Tony's Foyt-like figure lol.

Kyle Busch would be an interesting idea to go do the double...

    I'd watch!

Hope Milwaukee gets their stuff together and they go back.

First real coverage I've watched this weekend glad to see the weather looks good!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow, Jayski on TV. He's big time now.

How come Weed hasn't raced at Montreal?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nan,, there's a lot of stuff to do, it's kinda like being in Paris without the travel, lol. And most stuff is printed in French & English (in the bigger cities, they are tourist friendly.)

Boy, they're really giving Dave TV time today.

    ReplyDelete
  20. mmm, poutine.

JD, Burns in the infield studio and Bestwick @ PxP would be an instant success. We've talked in the past about job performance vs. job security. In my business, we need customer feedback and employee suggestions. Does anyone internal to broadcasts (sponsors, on-air talent, production staff, errand boy, etc.) care about the quality?

Nan S, for sure they'll be showing Carl's Sports Car crash. In the opening, during the recap, the Fast 5 and for Wind Tunnel's Eye Candy at a minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dot last year they didn't run a full schedule, and he didn't the year before either. Fairly new race still.

Plus it used to be during Pocono weekend and their focus was Cup.

    Like a streamlined pre-race!

    ReplyDelete
  22. ugh...this guy starting anthem flat! not sure how long I will last with no tv anyway but reading Tweets & here.

    dark clouds there.

Mic is tall for this guy...hard on vocal chords.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dot,
Jayski is hosted by ESPN now. Not sure if they outright own him, but all the "comments" are redirected to ESPN comments.

    ReplyDelete
  24. oh no! He's singing Canadian too!!??

    tone deaf

    ReplyDelete
  25. Apparently there were no auditions for singing the anthemns.

    Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I really love Montreal, fun city in the summertime.

Nan, I thought Shannon missed on the Carl interview.

His right rear tire touched a painted spot on the track and he spun. He could not believe it after it happened.

She never pointed that out or showed the spot which has been a big problem for drivers when the track is wet.

That crash was a big $$$ deal.

    JD

    ReplyDelete
  27. This guy is singing both anthems equally bad...:(

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jay gets a free pop in the prerace and during the week on NN. I sure would like to see ESPNEWS promote that site as well.

He is like the red-headed stepchild.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Equal opportunity for all countries.

ESPN does own Jayski now I'm pretty sure.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am really missing Indycar site. Last night racing FREE online, driver stats and camera options. Very nice.

I like the IMS guys what little I heard of them..and their post race..once I found it.

Be nice if NASCAR gave option for race online w/o the tv announcers..

    I know not gonna happen

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ David, thanks. I just realized that this race is about 2-3 weeks later than before.

@ Patrick, I know Jay and BSPN are related. I just never noticed his headlines on a pre race show.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Happy...Sunday...all!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey Gymmie, you just missed Brent Musburger. College football is coming our way again.

  35. Soph,

That was Mike King and Robbie Buhl last night on IMS Radio, which was the feed for the IndyCar.com feed. Both are great. Lots of excitement and great perspectives. There's a ton of information on the website that is fairly easy to navigate. Turner Interactive and NASCAR could learn a thing or many from them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I wonder if that guy was some French Canadian rock singer...no range, but popular.

They showed Carl's wreck about 10 times on the Grand Am coverage too. I bet Marcos hecklng him was only the tip of the iceburg, but Carl's a good sport (well...most of the time...)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Patrick,

Welcome back! Hope you had fun last weekend.

Last night was first time I used Indysite for race, just caught last half. FABULOUS to offer for free. IRL TRYING to show fans some love and deserve to be seen by more fans. Loved the guys, too. Thanks for info.

    Please rain stay away.

anybody keeping stats on year with most rain outs/delays?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Maybe I am just old school, but two tickers on the screen running at different speed with different info is just too much.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Remember when ESPN only ran that ticker at 28 and 58? I miss that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I guess watching the HD version of ESPN News makes your head spin.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I also miss the old style non-ticker scoring.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Scuba divers on standby? And I thought Lake Lloyd at Daytona was a little close to the track.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Sophia unlike cup @ Watkins Glen this race will run rain or shine

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ DaveOKC, as it has been said before, drivers can find anywhere to crash.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Not a problem when it's the news. I like that network. Ryan Burr has been doing a great job for them.

    ReplyDelete
  46. First time i'll actually SEE a race here. listened to the radio the last 2.

    hope the rain holds off

    ReplyDelete
  47. Max Papis can hear the crew, but they can't hear him, according to Tati

    ReplyDelete
  48. Alright its time to go racing! I saw Kyle Busch win on Friday @ Chicagoland w a great crowd on hand... Now I wanna see what he can do here. i dont think he will be much of a contender but we will see. Hope everyone enjoys a great race!!!!!!

ps Im so glad to see And back

    ReplyDelete
  49. Which ESPN is going to show up today? Hope it's the ORP one.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi guys, back for more! Hope we have a good day.

    ReplyDelete
  51. "... But the good news is, we can squeeze in another break."

    Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Dave, they had divers at the F1 race in Spain too. I'm sure they all hope no one needs them!

    ReplyDelete
  53. What an embarassing anthem performance. I wish Roger Doucet was still alive. He used to sing the anthems at all the sporting events. He even learned European anthems to sing during international hockey events.

The dude who sang today's anthems just sucked. Even we Canadians have "local recording sensations". :-)

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah that Canadian anthem was too much. That would be terrible if it rained for this race like last year's race was a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Those camera shots of Kenny Wallace were painful to watch. It was like the camera man didn't know what his car looked like, so they were as wide as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Whats the status of this race for the future? Didn't they have a change in management or something of that nature earlier in the year?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hope not as well. One thing for sure - it's a unique vantage point for the race.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Somehow they figured out how to make pace laps take 15 minutes...

    ReplyDelete
  59. @ David

Not that I heard of. The track management, city, provincal and federal governments got in a peeing match with the FIA over the F1 Grand Prix last year. They've kissed and made up now.

As far as I know, NASCAR is very happy with this race.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  60. Missed Perez go off course because of an in-car camera. Who would use an in-car camera on lap 1?

    ReplyDelete
  61. tight shots on a road course. ouch.

    some action in 20-something land

    ReplyDelete
  62. do not be surprised w tight shots/in car cams. It's BSPN's MO :(

This really stinks no free online radio to listen to

    ReplyDelete
  63. why do they have the cameras so close to the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Petree has to figure out how to get a word in with this group.

    Speak up Andy!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Jeez, what's with the close shots. Didn't ESPN learn a lesson at the Glen? Sure, for some of them they were trying to show Kryle's damage, but those shots were inducing nausea.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  66. @keselowskiweb via Twitter, "Just a sunday drive around the park..."

    ReplyDelete
  67. Tom Hubert to the garage. any mention? doubtful.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Too bad about Braun. Road courses are his forte.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  69. a non-tight-shot of that 16 could have found smoke/oil trailing it but instead that tight shot was confusing. bummer for collin

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oof, tough break for Colin Braun.

    ReplyDelete
  71. that's fer sure, Rusty....ugh...maybe they need to make him pay every time he says it to break him of that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Max is already up to 20th after starting from the back for unapproved changes, plus the pre-start pit stop to fix radio wiring.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Gotta follow Max then. Thats where the real action is at!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Don't you think someone should be throwing kitty litter on that oil instead of just letting it all leak out? Miss Randy already.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Sophia, Indycar really has spoiled you now! They do a good job online. I guess all the Direct TV people are going there now...

Too bad for Colin, he's a good kid.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @ Sophia

Does the link to MRN on the nascar.com front page not work unless you have TrackPass? I didn't sign in to TrackPass, and it worked for me, but that could just be because my TrackPass password has been cached or something. Give it a try and let me know, please. I've always been curious about that...

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  77. you have to be signed up for it to work.

goes back to n.com having those exclusive online rights again =(

    ReplyDelete
  78. @ KBaskins, if I'm not mistaken, you have to pay for the radio on N.com. So maybe it is tied into Trackpass.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Dang. I was hoping since I didn't log in to TrackPass and it worked that meant it was available to everyone.

    Sorry, Sophia.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  80. Nascar.com has Jeffrey Earnhardt & Brian Keselowski a lap down. What happened?

    ReplyDelete
  81. @JD--Boy!..do..I...have...good..timing...:D...Glad..to..have..missed..that..one..:D...no..Brett..for...me!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Good old Leigh Diffey is losing a lung over the MotoGP on Fox from Indy.

    ReplyDelete
  83. How is Gilles supposed to be pronounced? Is the s silent?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wonder how many are flipping over to the Moto race during commercials

    ReplyDelete
  85. Speaking of copyrights for music for last weeks race real quick:

I just found out this weekend, the band I help promote lost two gigs due to places that can't afford the ASCAP fees or one tiny place that did not know about them.

One place needs to pay $8000.00 ANNUALLY! (fees based on seating capacity of restaurant, number of bands that play)

It's outrageous. I never knew clubs had to pay these. Even to show tv/sports due to themes/bumper music. Even short clips count nowadays as opposed to when you could sample I guess.

The band recorded many songs in public domain but that varies from jurisdiction America vs Europe. (and one band member is from Europe where he will sell CD's to relatives/friends) It's very complicated and a producer told them there are ways around the law to record. But the band did not want to be audited someday and had to pay $900 to cover all rights just to be safe. Songs writ before 1922 were ok..but others, confusing. They did record a couple of original tunes but man, this stuff is very confusing. It's not like they are playing "Current radio tunes"!

The laws since the 90's and CD/DVD digital age i bet added to the complexities.

This copyright stuff is layered deep, so I can only imagine how much it would've cost ESPN to show the race with songs last week, if you play due to the exposure and numbers in audience!

One of the band members wife is an attorney but NOT specialized in music rights but they still chose to do the right thing..even if others skate around the rules. These guys are old enough to know better.

Still $8000 a year REALLY cuts into a struggling mom and pop places profits in these times. :(

    Now back to the race.

    ReplyDelete
  86. @bevo--
    I'm one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I got soooo much email after that IRL race last night it was amazing.

Incredible what good TV can do for a race.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ok, better late than never...it needs to hurry up and rain already

    OT: Eff its cold :|

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes, the "s" is silent in Gilles.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  90. Since I haven't watched Indy racing in quite a while, I find it very difficult to figure out who is in which car. Can't see numbers, and if you're not familiar with sponsors or paint, it's anyone's guess.

    ReplyDelete
  91. kbaskins

have to be member of Track pass to listen on NASCAR.com

I clicked on listen to MRN and up came a register for membership thing. :(

    ReplyDelete
  92. missed the IRL race.

sounds like it was a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Dot, yes. And it's not 'nooooooove', I heard Jacques give the correct pronunciation a few years back.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Marty keeps us up to the minute with the S&P's. I wouldn't think traveling all that way to Montreal there wouldn't be any but there you go.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Oops. Forgot to put up the FoxTrax leaderboard link:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/national/foxTrax

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  96. Why doesn't ESPN show some of Max's in car video to show how he passed all of those cars?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Not the same without Randy LaJoie is it?

    ReplyDelete
  98. @ kbaskins, thanks. Marty keeps adding the s. Not bagging on him. He's done well with Jean Francois...

    ReplyDelete
  99. SalB

so true about IRL cars looking a like. That's why savvy announcers are very important!

Still last nights final laps were AMAZING!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Great IRL race and coverage last night and a great F1 this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Getting ready for the DFR SOS.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Marty, Randy & Rusty worked really well together. Andy just seems like the awkward third person in the booth.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Vicky, its got alot to do with the owners points too about why a S&P would go all the way up there just to S&P

    ReplyDelete
  104. @ Dot

They've been mispronouncing circuit too. Oh well, c'est la vie. :-)

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think Andy is looking around for DJ.

    ReplyDelete
  106. hey, +1 for the followup on Jeffery

    ReplyDelete
  107. off topic, but I notice Ryan McGee is still tweeting despite all the panic...that was funny about the Benny Hill theme.

oh, they're finally getting to Jeffrey Earnhardt...ooh, the S&P word again...

    ReplyDelete
  108. ESPN get rid of the tight shots.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Holy crap, that was some restart!

I wish they weren't so enamoured with the close shots though. I wanna hurl.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  110. So, zooming-out is just a concept this season.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I think the 'Good ol' boys' are making pretty good efforts with the French pronounciations, all things considered.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Wasn't that lead change by design?

    ReplyDelete
  113. glen, they are only tweeting nonsense. All the news is online.

    ReplyDelete
  114. JD- Is the placement of the cameras on this course necessitating the tight shots?

    ReplyDelete
  115. Oops, guess not. Thanks BSPN for making me type out of my rear.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I feel like the mix of tight/wide shots is reversed today.

sadly the incar's might be the most decent wide shots we get today. really narrow course.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Karen, you remind me of something from a years back...we went to see the NASCAR 3d movie, and my friend complained that they didn't show enough in car cam, since it's 3D, and I said 'you know why they didn't...' and he says 'because people will get sick...' Yup. ugh, they're at it again.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Dot, I was thinking the same thing you were until I saw that replay. Figured they had a deal made

    ReplyDelete
  119. @ SalB

Hell, we know how much trouble Rusty has with non-French names, so it doesn't surprise me.

Dave Burns pronounced it correctly. It's nice that he bothered to learn.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  120. At least Marty Reid helps. just bad camera work. they gotta keep the cameras wide.

    ReplyDelete
  121. KarenB, thanks for the FOX link, it's great. I've never been there before. Great info.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Pit road at this track bites. It's incredibly crowded. You should hear the F1 teams whine about it.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  123. so if the news is online, who cares if it's not twittered? I know, we're never gonna agree, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  124. bevo, the camera guys and the Director rehearse how to get around the track and get a rhythm.

The incredible zooming in by the cams is being called for by the director.

since the race began, just like the other ESPN events, the cameras have gotten tighter and tighter.

It makes no sense at all and up to this point I have no perspective on who is where. Really strange.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I bet BSPN is loving this race. Five minutes around the track under caution.

    ReplyDelete
  126. @ SteveL

You're welcome! It's the best online leaderboard. Much more accurate than NASCAR's own leaderboard, which is a sorry state of affairs when you think about it. Unfortunately, they don't run one for the truck races, which is a real shame.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  127. JD, that's really the biggest problem with many of the broadcasts, isn't it? When you have no perspective of where cars are running in relation to each other, it's difficult to get too involved...or even excited about the race.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Is Rusty Deaf? For goodness sake, he never listens to what anyone else says and ends up repeating them more than half the time. I can't believe no one has said something to him about it.

    ReplyDelete
  129. glen, the entire concept of social media is something that you reject, I get it.

Right now, it may be the number one communication topic for sports leagues and TV networks.

ESPN just finished a workshop on that this week.

There are several new services that will come out shortly, but right now Twitter is the most effective direct message delivery service on the planet.

    And it's free...

    ReplyDelete
  130. I always like the old 'drop down' that ESPN used to place cars in the field 5 at a time. they would also show them in colors to let you know if a car had moved up or down a spot or two. Lots of useful info in a short amount of time.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Im with Sal. I even liked it when it was 3 at a time.

Got the running order, top 30 in points as they ran, ROTY standings, etc.

It was really informative and the announcers could talk about the race instead of all the other stuff.

The beauty of TV...if only TV could take a step back to realize that.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I live on Twitter for NASCAR information. Actually, I don't use it for much else. Being on Twitter means I never have to visit the crap websites for nascar.com, speedtv.com, espn.com, etc. I just click on the link to articles that are posted by the reporters. I spend way less time finding motorsports information.

  133. Sal, great observation. Establishing a perspective with a wideshot is done in football, baseball and other sports before the director cuts to a close-up camera.

Without that perspective, all these tight shots and in-cars mean nothing. We have no clue as to what we are seeing.

I get lots of copies of emails fans send to ESPN. To say they are as upset as our little gang would be an understatement.

As I mentioned before, the reason the ratings went up a bit is because Junior got back in the news. ESPN was just a lucky bystander.

I have no idea why this is happening, but if it happens in Atlanta it is going to be rough.

    ReplyDelete
  134. David, I'm glad to know that someone else even remembers it! They also gave intervals bewteen cars, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Exactly what is an in-race reporter suppose to give us that a pit reporter doesn't? Or is that just another gadget to annoy us with like overzoom on a HD camera.
I am not in awe of the camera work or direction of this show.

    ReplyDelete
  136. JD, this is just bad. incredibly tight shots.what the hell is going on.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Ross...it's always something.

    Sorry. Couldn't resist.

    ReplyDelete
  138. She has the nerve to say that Max is ruining her experience without his radio. WHAT ABOUT OURS with your terrible broadcast???

    ReplyDelete
  139. These cars seem to be high off the ground in the front shots. Wonder why. I thought the lower the better for handeling.

    ReplyDelete
  140. They showed us the Carpentier pass, but totally missed Boris Said passing Perez in the same corner just ahead of them.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Yup Sal. I screamed "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TICKER?!" the day FOX coverage came on the air and we got the "scrolling" ticker. Just uses up more space IMO and is half sponsorship half the time now too.

I even remember the ghost top 10 ticker ESPN used to have. When you could see the whole screen.

I think even when the 28, 58 bottom ticker popped up they killed the top 5 dropdown as well to give you the most bang for buck.

    Rough tight shots still.

  142. I'm off to the pool. Will comment later. Have fun.

  143. good replay shots of Patrick's issue

I love twitter for many things but especially racing stuff. NOTHING against Jayski but his new layout still throws me off...and it looks different on three different monitors? one wide screen and two 4:3 so that adds to this dame's confusion. :)
So I use Twitter more often and its' fast.

If Robin Miller were on Twitter, it would be perfect...but he' ain't a fan last I heard.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Dunno what Marty is talking about, didn't see anyone leaving

    ReplyDelete
  147. They are getting lost of time for their ads, aren't they?

    ReplyDelete
  148. The Over The Wall camera is one tight shot. I'll bet the director thinks it too wide. Maybe they can get a camera on the tip of the airgun?

    ReplyDelete
  149. would you guys kind of agree that the wheels are coming off this telecast?

    ReplyDelete
  150. @Patrick - probably not on the tip, but I'm sure they could fit one on the air gun itself. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  151. JD,
Stop with the pathetic excuse of Jr. is the only reason ratings have increased. It makes you seem even more uninformed than you already are.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I'd trade that helmet cam for times on the stops eny day.

    ReplyDelete
  153. @JD, yep the wheels are coming off, but the ALMS race on SPEED isn't much better. Too many incars and tight shots there too.

    ReplyDelete
  154. JD, am done with this NW broadcast. am going to watch the race on speed. Thanks for the blog.

    ROFLMAO!

    Don't...give..them..any..ideas..:p

Nice pun. And, I absolutely agree. I appreciate Marty giving us an update on Tony Ave and a total count on those OFF and OUT.

Speaking of Twitter (StirrupCigars), if Rusty weren't so in the past and got with the program, he would see what the complaints are and might see a path to improvement. Although, the would require some introspective and he probably only wants to hear nice things about himself.

  157. *sigh* Just saw two new godaddy.com ads (Danica in courtroom scene and gambling).

So I guess godaddy is never using the Brad K. or Jr. ads ever again. Both the new ads have women grabbing their shirts in preparation for baring (apparently) baring their breasts.

Unless I knew what godaddy.com was really about, I'd assume it was a site for soft-core porn. I guess godaddy has found their niche.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Marty to Andy - when do you speculate these guys will come down & pit?

Andy: I don't know, I guess they aren't in their window. I could have said that. Larry Mac & FOX pit reporters where are you?

  160. JD

I think the wheels are off each telecast with the messed up Camera work. Just finished eating and see I did not miss much..

It's very sad not having FREE online radio...Greed out of hand with NASCAR partners. :(

I am trying to do other things cause it's jsut not WORTH getting angry anymore.

ESPN REFUSES to change. Killing the racing

    ReplyDelete
  161. Where's Randy???? He would lighten up the broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Wouldn't this long caution be the perfect time to update the running order?

    ReplyDelete
  163. I never noticed Tim's fingernails until JD mentioned it a few weeks ago...thanks for nothing, lol.

I like Jayski's new layout. I think it looks more professional & easier to find things. I rarely go to Nascar.com or ESPN or Speed. If there's breaking news Jay will have it in a reasonable amount of time.

Add my voice to what SalB said--you need perspective, and we're just not getting it. Another thing is a ticker showing interval times.

    ReplyDelete
  164. So I stepped away to play catch with my dog the last 10 minutes and we are STILL under the same caution?

-sigh- this race sounded better on radio the last 2 years

    ReplyDelete
  165. SalB said...

MRN did. You're right. It was the appropriate time for the full order (including S&Ps).

    ReplyDelete
  166. Agree JD, no flow at all. The other thing that puzzles me is Petree recently. He was a real surprise when he started at ESPN and very solid. The past month he has slipped and not been sharp at all.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Total chaos. Where were the pit reporters? We had no idea those cars behind the #32 would come down pit road.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Patrick, Rusty actually does care. I heard him say last year that he heard from the fans and he was *trying* to improve. Still a work in progress, I'd say.

    ReplyDelete
  169. These shots are making me nausaus. Way too much movement and too close.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Arrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh! Stop using the close-up and in-car shots.

    Seriously.

Sorry for the scream, guys. It's driving me crazy. (No pun intended.)

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  171. Man. There is tons of excitement on MRN as Ranger and Edwards were side-by-side fighting for the lead. ESPN: monotone, watch this, somethings happening. whoopee. Are they broadcasting from a church in service?

    ReplyDelete
  172. 19 of 74 laps run in 90 minutes. Not enough speed for me to call it a race.

Boring. I'm gonna switch over to golf to check on their action. I'm sure it's moving faster than this.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Hey Anon 3:57PM, love to have you follow that up with your opinion on that issue.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Appropriate use of an in car camera! Perfect to show what their camera missed.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Random observation:

NASCAR.com's lineup for this race shows 3 #81 cars. Tagliani, McDowell, and Harr all drive #81 Dodges apparently ..

    ReplyDelete
  176. Anyone know who just pitted. I saw the #27 & a few cars behind. Instead of covering pit stops we must get in the commercials.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Man, this close-up thing is crazy. We have basically missed every single thing that has happened in this race.

Not as bad as Erik the K, but getting there...

    ReplyDelete
  178. Perhaps the ratings went up because those fans of the World Series of Poker thought it was on in the race's timeslot. You know how many millions of fans there are of poker on tv y'all...

    ReplyDelete
  179. glenc1,
I'm glad he cares, but sometimes you have to work to seek out the feedback/compliments/complaints. You can't depend solely on those comments that come to you face-to-face.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Would be a good time for a field summary, don't cha think? There's guys out there that they haven't mentioned - they have fans too.

    ReplyDelete
  181. ok...ENUFF

out to water flowers on this cool August day! 71 degrees and make some imitation Chocolate Eclair dessert.

Will read later. Aggravation is too much and griping does zilch. :(

    peace out peeps.

    ReplyDelete
  182. "He is getting some camera time, at least!"

He wouldn't need continual Lucky Dogs to get camera time if ESPN would abandon the script once in awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Any clue why they are running so many laps under caution? No oil down, no extensive cleanup needed, yet they run all these yellow laps? are they trying to wait for rain so they cna call the race early?

    ReplyDelete
  184. ironic the car that flipped was sponsored by Tow Truck in a Box...

    ReplyDelete
  187. Oh, no, not more bad luck for Justin!

    ReplyDelete
  188. Rusty is quiet a lot in this broadcast then he jumps in and screams. Boy, Algaier has the worst luck, but there's too much of the Carl & Kyle show. On the replay I guess it was mostly Justin's fault.

    ReplyDelete
  189. "So you mean I can call the guys at the shop, Rusty, Ron, Kyle AND the 80 million customers on Verizon Wireless?"

  190. Dang..it!...Poor..Mr..Alligator!..:(

    ReplyDelete
  191. @David
McDowell is the last car on the lead lap according to Nascar.com

Listening to MRN and watching golf. MRN said the race is being run at a snail's pace--average of 53mph.

Allgaier said he wheel-hopped and lost his brakes.
