Special "RaceDay" From Richmond On SPEED

Several times a year, SPEED expands RaceDay and brings in a second panel of experts for conversation and discussion. Richmond is one of those times.

As usual, the main panel will consist of host John Roberts with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. On this day, Steve Byrnes will host a second panel. His analysts will be Darrell Waltrip, Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond.

This program has lots to talk about and Wendy Venturini and Hermie Sadler should get a good workout as the reporters. The Real Deal this week is Brian Vickers, who will also be the Sunday night guest on Wind Tunnel at 9PM on SPEED.

Roberts and Byrnes are both very good at directing TV traffic. They certainly will have their hands full with all of the opinions flying from these five analysts.

Rutledge Wood is also on this program and it should be interesting to see how much of the pre-race concert by the All American Rejects the network chooses to televise.

Since this is such a big race and a key program for RaceDay, we will offer this post to get your reactions during and after the show. We are looking for your opinion on how the TV program worked for you. What did you expect and what did you get?

To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for helping is with this effort and for taking the time to stop by.

  1. Wow. Crafton is making no friends out there today.

I guess RaceDay has been delayed for another few minutes...

  2. what in the world are those guys doing.omg they are just too goofy

    ReplyDelete
  3. Heyy I love the opening of raceday.

    ReplyDelete
  4. wth is this goofy music?? And why are they wasting time on this, when their show is shortened??? DUMB.

    ReplyDelete
  5. any idea what spencer was doing in the opening?

    ReplyDelete
  6. How come espn dosen't do this with the fans in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The ESPN pre-race is indoors because of rain. This is just a TV show, not the pre-race.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That opening did not do any favors for Mr. Spencer.

  9. I would've chosen a more familiar operatic type song...not familiar with that they used...would've chosen maybe Barbar of Seville or something. :) Figaro's Aria..often used in great cartoons...Bugs or Tex Avery's stuff.

Least we have shortened RDAY..two hours is TOO MUCH...

hey did they remove the crowds with annoying moving signs from behind the guys? Looks like JR, Jimmy and Kenny are against trucks. YAY

  10. I was wondering the same thing, Haus. What the heck was that back and forth 180° rotation thingie?

If it wasn't for the excellent information from the reporters talking to the drivers, I would give this show a miss.

Four drivers have clinched, another 10 are clenched. This should be an interesting race!

  11. broke out the second tv for tonight...michigan game on the hd and raceday on the second monitor...

there is NO reason to have Logano or Dale Jr. on hot pass they are irrelevant players in tonight's race. Johnson really doesn't matter tonight either. I would have loved to have seen Biffle, Kenseth, Vickers & Busch.

  12. IMHO Unfortunately, Ron came down into him. Matt was there first. He didn't do anything wrong other than try to pass Hornaday on the inside during a short track race. This isn't anything we haven't seen before.

  13. I rarely watch pre-race or other 'live from the track' shows, but if I never have to look at those goobers and their signs again I'll not miss them. Spin the talent around to face the crowd. Silly me; when I'm there I'm more interested in seeing them than being on the tube. I'll never understand the obsession with getting your face on the box.

  14. Kenny's hair plugs are looking good! oh boy, DW...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think DW really misses being on TV. Wonder what changes he might make next season to work more with SPEED?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Any bets on whether the N.D.@ Mich. game will end in time to see the Countdown show on ABC????

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is raceday but whenever I think about the race beingon ESPN/ABC, it annoys the hack out of me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Excuse me? They have an abbreviated show, before one of the most important races of the season, and they're going to talk about Kenny Wallace's 800th race? He's not even a Cup driver!

WTF? Wait, that's gonna need another. WTF?

SPEED really has their heads up their arses today.

  19. I cannot believe I'm watching this Kenny Wallace crap.

WTF? (OK, I had to go there a third time.)

  20. Sitting here at the beach in NC just got back from dinner, had one of those umbrella drinks so TV is a little fuzzy. Missed the opening but am but DW is too funny Kyle should be playing head games with Matt Kenseth like that is going to happen.
    Nice tribute to Kenny

  21. Karen B, just imagine what features they had to cut because the Truck race ran 20 minutes long. Those must have been real winners.

I love Kenny, but no sports show should spend time covering it's own broadcasters. He's not John Madden or Jim McKay.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Spencer is a dork...Kenny Wallce acts like an idiot on this show. I notice he doesn't do this schtick when interviewing after his races. I think I'd rather see Lindsay Lohan than these bozo's.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I should have paid better attention to the intro :(

@Karen--as much as I love Herman I agree! That was not urgent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Palmetto, I would have had the same problem if they had run a feature on RaceDay of Jason Leffler's 800th race, or something similar. That sort of thing is for Trackside, not RaceDay.

To run such a special on an abbreviated broadcast right before what is arguably the most interesting race of the season highlighting one of your own broadcasters is asshattery of the first magnitude.

    The mind boggles.

  25. Hey, can somebody surf over to NASCAR.com and see if they are live simulcasting Raceday right now?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 7:47 left in the 3rd q on ABC...might not make it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ JD

I don't see anything, but that means nothing. I hate that website. If it's there, I'm not finding it easily.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mike, going to be a nail biter for Countdown, race looks good...right now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. KB,

I have been pushing them to revamp it again. Looks like they bought a WordPress template for $40.

Needs big changes, especially when you look at the other pro sports websites.

    ReplyDelete
  30. There was a glimpse of All-American Rejects before the commercial break. I can hear them in the background everywhere, but I can't see them.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ JD

I've taken a more in-depth look, and I still see no simulcasting. The next live event in their video section is the post-race conference.

If they're going to be doing a big NASCAR/SPEED offering, they have to get that nascar.com website more organized. I never visit there, except through links posted on Twitter or RSS. Same with the SPEED, ESPN and FOX websites. Every one of them is impossible to navigate.

  32. Jeff Hammond, probably Just For Men's #1 customer...

    ReplyDelete
  33. NASCAR/SPEED is a joke. Just highlight video clips of all the shows most of us have already seen. What I think you want and what I want is another place to actually watch these shows LIVE. If any of you have ever watched Wind Tunnel EXTRA, the quality is extraordinary! So, we know they can broadband broadcast these shows. Times they are a changin'. Just not fast enough.

    ReplyDelete
  34. How do you win four out of three races? Did I hear that right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. ok signs worked way behind JR

did not see them behind Jeff H..that is a good thing.

GET RID OF FANS with Signs on these shows, SPEED. It's more enjoyable w/o signs or screaming fans.

also, i hate to say it but NOT a fan of Jeff's goat tee thingie. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Patrick
Or watch the IRL on indycar.com. REALLY kool. Yes, it can be done well nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think NASCAR.com has improved significantly over last year and I find it now one of the better, timely news sources, especially since That's Racin' has withered in the past few months. Also, N.com is one of the very few sites I have seen that allow writers to explore or discuss a subject in more than the magic 700 words.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Just a 'pop up' shower. NWS local and regional radar shows a larger cell well to the south, and nothing else in the state.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This should answer the questions about why ESPN is in the Infield Pit Studio.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Patrick. aside from the circular constantly moving cam on WT Extra, I agree that is the BEST THING ONLINE. no commmercials so lots of band for your buck there. Love it. :)

SPEEDTV.com is even more of a trainwreck than nascar.com, tho like KarenB I go to neither without a link.

Even guys that work at SPEED hate it. I miss Robin Miller's columns/mailbog due to the trainwreck that's SPEEDtv.com. and NO DIRECT link to Robin's stuff....I've asked & he said they all hate the site & everybody complains about it..but not enough to fix it.

    OMG, umbrella...rain...ugh. :(

    ReplyDelete
  41. @ David, you're right, he does. Funny.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Might be time to program the DVR. It's not going to rain long, but if the start is delayed too long some of us old people start falling asleep halfway through.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Raining at an abc race and no ESPN Classic for me. This is gonna be bad.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sophia,

I agree with the constant motion of the cameras, but I was referring to the image quality. It is truly amazing that a live show can be in that good of a resolution inside that window size.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Patrick
Did you see any of the 24hrs of lemans from the french website? It was in HD!!!! And it looked fantastic! Of course, ya gotta have broadband.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mike,

Missed lemans. Was out of town at the time and would have been impolite to connect. Will look out for next year. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  47. I thought JR said Bootie would be back at RIchmond. Guess no more NAPA Good Stuff for Bootie. Hey Larry bring him back to Nascar Performance I miss him on that show, Doug just isn't as much fun

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bootie WAS on Speed in Richmond. He was on NASCAR Performance.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sylvia, I have three letters for you: RSS.

That's an acronym for Really Simple Syndication, and many many websites offer news feeds, one headline at a time, for your viewing pleasure. Go find yourself a newsreader program (I'm not familiar enough with the PC to recommend one), then point your browser here: http://www.speedtv.com/feature/speedwire/ . You will be presented with a number of news feeds you can subscriber to. I read Robin Miller's column every week by accessing it through RSS. Then go to nascar.com, fox.com, scenedaily.com, yahoo, etc. and do the same thing. Voila! Easy peasy. You need never visit a website again. The newsreader I use on my Mac has a built-in browser. It's been at least a year since I actually visited the SPEED website. Maybe someone here could recommend a newsreader for your PC.

  50. This will stay on ABC, the ones starting to sweat are the local stations who want to do news at 11PM.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks ANON good thing I have the DVR set I'll have to wait until I get home from the Beach next weekend to get my Bootie fix.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hey guys, the new post is up for the race tonight. Once Raceday is done, slip over to the live race blog and we will watch this one unfold.

I have a feeling it is going to memorable...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wonder how many times we're going to hear "If the race ended now?" tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @KarenB et al
    IE8 has RSS built in.

    ReplyDelete
  55. 9 mins left in the game MI ahead0hurrah!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I wonder if they still have that noise ordinance on the books...it's been ignored many times, but I always wonder....I think the people get that the races are essential to the economy...I haven't heard anyone mention it in years.

I was at a Busch race that went until 1am (we left at 12:15, I think.)

    ReplyDelete
  57. @Mike - You think we'll hear "if the race ended now" more often than "if you just joined our broadcast"?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't even know what RSS means...I've seen it everywhere and it's even on a blog I have but dont' utilized it...I've heard others say they hate the way it looks...& if you have to sign up for it..not sure how that works.

Have too many questions as to what RSS means to hook it up to my browser (FFox)

    Thanks anyway kb :)

  59. Did Wendy just call Kenny a suck-up? She rocks!

    ReplyDelete
  60. ok had I known it was gonna rain, would run to Krogers darn it...but had a glass of wine and can feel it so don't want to drive...need milk though...to go with my chocolate cake...or I can get that cool whip out of the freezer.

I am tired of hearing ZERO chance of rain and it raining...no such thing as zero chance rain.

Wonder if MRN will be on if rain delay. Lots of time the FM station here goes back to country music if MRN goes on break. . .

    ReplyDelete
  61. Whatever that song is and whoever is singing it, I'd rather hear my own screams as give myself a root canal with an air wrench.

    ReplyDelete
  62. if nd makes the two could have ot

    ReplyDelete
  63. Just got off the phone with a friend at the track. She says the light are on and she can't see anymore rain. Also, people are beginning to move out and back into the stands.

Looking at radar, it was just a lonely little shower that popped up and moved south across the track.

    ReplyDelete
  64. OK, now what? Game is running over.

    ReplyDelete
  65. They can just shorten the pre race show. Green flag isn't until 7:45...or so.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think I'm probably grateful the pre race will be short. I can only listen so many times to the multiple formulas as to who's in or out of the chase, who has to finish where, etc. I've been bludgeoned with it so much the past month I could scream. And I have, actually!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Do they have OT in college ball? Go for the win, Michigan!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I don't care about the pre race. But I will be upset if we miss opening ceremonies.
