Live Blogging The Camping World Trucks From Talladega (3:30PM - SPEED)

Update: Since live programming ran long, we are leaving the comments section open for your reaction to the special Trackside program now on SPEED.

It is a rainy and dark day in Talladega. Saturday activity has been rained out early and fans are waiting to see if the Camping World Truck Series race will get in.

Krista Voda is ready to present The Setup at 3:30PM. SPEED will go on the air as scheduled and see what happens. This is the Halloween version of the show, so costumes will be the order of the day.

The telecast team includes Rick Allen on play-by-play with Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip as the analysts. Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander will handle pit road.

The good fun of the pre-race show will hopefully extend to the racing. The CWTS field is very divers. NASCAR veterans are mixed with some less experienced drivers and a smattering of start and park trucks.

SPEED is outstanding at presenting the truck races with a singular focus on the racing. In this series the battles are almost always at the front of the pack and the lead is something that changes hands a lot. No Chase, few egos and lots of real racers make this series a blast to watch.

Keep an eye out for the long camera shot on the backstretch. This really shows the positioning as the trucks get ready for the passing zone into Turn 3. Low-angle speed shots are effective at this speedway when the field is rolling as a pack.

SPEED uses far fewer in-car camera shots then ESPN and that really allows the viewer to keep a perspective on the field as the race is in progress. A wideshot at the finish is mandatory as the trucks always fight to the stripe.

This post will host your comments about the Camping World Truck Series race on SPEED from Talladega. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

How about an interview with Tayler after he comes out of the Infield Care Center ??

Sally said...

Thanks JD. I thought I remembered someone being as disgusted as the 'average fan'.

Dot said...

Poor Steve.

I'm predicting a GWC.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice to see ARCA vet Norm Benning running the whole race.

Anonymous said...

Dot - I'm predicting a wreck leading up to your GWC (or in some cases - green / white / upchuck) ... LOL

boyd said...

@Dot, be sure to watch the outlaw sprints next weekend, that's real racing!

Dot said...

@ tia, great minds.....

Dot said...

@ boyd, I'll tune in. Thanks.

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Norm Benning has been running full races most of the year. Except for a few DNFs that look legitimate, I don't think he's start-and-parked since Texas in June.

Anonymous said...

Dot - It's called ... The Script ... LOL ;-)

Richard in N.C. said...

Sally, I believe "covering" the race by watching it on TV happens more than is readily apparent due to restriction on travel budgets - but EESPN seems to almost never be criticized by the rest of the media.

I am biased, since I am a fan of Morgan Shepherd, and I can only put up with a limited amount of Phil Parsons in light of his grossly unsportsmanlike conduct in the N-wide series. When I can get it on the radio, I listen to none of the SPEED race call.

Daly Planet Editor said...

MV, he was going to today. Any idea where he gets his funding? Empty panels.

The Loose Wheel said...

I actually think Benning gets parked for being too slow rather than parking for $$.

Remember how many times he has factored into lead changes this year?

boyd said...

@Richard in NC
with his S and P's?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I hope this ends with a great final lap. It would be a super payoff to the viewers.

Vicky D said...

Finally Phil talked to David. Hope it's a great finish.

The Loose Wheel said...

Richard, remember something here, Morgan did it before too. If it wasn't for Tony Stewart supplementing his tire bills and Kevin Harvick hanging bodies, Morgan would be right there next to MSRP start and parking it too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

What a great comment:

CPAYNE24fan: fan bashing is the difference between someone who pays to be there and someone who is paid to be there....

Richard in N.C. said...

boyd, Yes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, this is good TV directing. Got the trucks coming at us all the time, wideshots and almost no in-truck cams. Awesome.

Martin Vincent said...

Norm Benning has had a sponsor on his truck for 9 of his 21 starts.

He has never been parked by NASCAR for being too slow.

I don't know where he gets the money, but he's been a refreshing change in a time when S&P teams are prevalent in all three top NASCAR series.

If you want to see his stats, just click on my name. You'll see he's been a good honest competitor in the Truck Series this year.

Sally said...

Perfect description!!!!

Sally said...

Crissy Wallace has done a good job today! Better than Mad Max.

kbaskins said...

Oh crap.

Dot said...

@ tia, followed the script to a T.

Daly Planet Editor said...

No room at the inn on that lap...shold have known that.

Sally said...

We knew it would happen, didn't we? Can't wait to see what started all that.

boyd said...

Looked like the onion out thought himself and put his pusher in trouble.

Daly Planet Editor said...

replays please.....

Vicky D said...

Not many trucks will be running at the end of this race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

What was up with Max on that one?

Haus14 said...

not more than 3 laps before the crash i told my wife that Sauder would wreck someone.

boyd said...

TDP Skinner got into his front end

Bill_R said...

That was goofy. Max spun out at the beginning of that wreck, got it straightened out and going again, then piled into Skinner. Weird.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bill, only thing I could think of is that Max lost his brakes and never knew it until it was too late.

Vicky D said...

Rick looked awful.

Kenn Fong said...

@TDP getting dark, it's about sundown isn't it?

Weather.com reports local sunset at 5:53 PM.

Dot said...

Weren't there 3 laps left? Ticker showing 5.

Sally said...

I think Max thought he had the wreck cleared and could driver thru it. Then Skinner spun in front of him. Maybe he couldn't see from the smoke?

Anonymous said...

I'm glad Max Papis is ok, but he clearly had no contol of that truck all day today. He should have just slowed down or stopped after he spun. Instead he slammed on the gas and plowed into Skinner. He better be careful tomorrow, 1 mistake and he can create many enemies.

Tripp said...

Max has some brakes. I saw skid marks on the track but they were only two or three truck lengths long.

Kenn Fong said...

Geez, the blimp shot made it look like a firework display!

Haus14 said...

ok....so it wasn't Johnny's fault. i was wrong

glenc1 said...

Haus14...had the same thought here. Seems like it happens more often than not...

this is why I hate racing at 'dega & Daytona. Same old same old, just a different cast. Glad to see Max get out, it looked like he was in there awhile...

we'll probably seem the same thing tomorrow. With any luck, Jimmie blows an engine and finishes 43rd...ya think?

The Loose Wheel said...

Skinner, your NOT Dale Earnhardt. That is all.

Anonymous said...

That sure looked like Sauter got an assist from Crafton

Vicky D said...

The lap counter keeps on changing from 4 to 5 to 4 again.

Dot said...

@ VickyD, I'm noticing that too.

PammH said...

I don't know if they can get this race restarted. It's gotta be almost dark, it is here.

Sally said...

Amazing what a difference good pit reporters make, isn't it? Intelligent questions, interviewing drivers after the wrecks, wow.

The Loose Wheel said...

Skinner moved up, Sauter filled the hole. Skinner wanted back in. They wrecked. IMO, end story. I blame Mike

boyd said...

@Dot,
You are a genius and have ESP.

Speed TV did an awesome job covering the truck race. I hope those guys at ESPN were taking notes...

Martin Vincent said...

The lap counter going back and forth is Speed's best guess as to how many laps of yellow and then green-white-checker are left in the race. NASCAR's decision as to when to give one lap to green is the reason it sometimes switches back and forth.

Dot said...

@ boyd, thank you.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, Im not drinking lol.

Crissy Wallace finished 13th. Not too shabby.

Tripp said...

Great finish to a very good plate race with great coverage so we could see it all.

Totally agree on the quality of the pit reporting. Compared to broadcasts like this, ESPN's coverage is simply pathetic. As far as I'm concerned the Cup and Nationwide seasons are over. The only one left are the trucks.

Vicky D said...

Michael, do you really think those ESPN guys were watching the broadcast? I doubt it.

Steve L. said...

Man, if only ESPN did 50% as good as this race was, we'd all be happy.

rich said...

What a great race, both racing and broadcast coverage. SPEED really knows how to let the race make the show

kbaskins said...

Excellent job, SPEED! That's how to broadcast a race.

--KarenB

Sally said...

Isn't it something that, with no 'chase', the truck series is really compelling to watch? Good production with announcers and pit reporters that really know their stuff. On a network that isn't even the 'worldwide leader'. All that just by covering the actual race as it actually happens on the track. Phenomenol.

Dot said...

As much as I don't like Weed, it sure is nice of him to drive for free.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Why don't we keep this open for Trackside comments?

Steve L. said...

Truck Series is the very best racing and Speed is the very best broadcasters of race coverage.Period.

Anonymous said...

Solid job by Speed today. They prove less is best. There are no pre-planned storylines, there are no distracting features and gimmicks. Speed did not have to resort to replay every 5 minutes like ESPN. In-car cams were used when necessary. Wide shots and shots from the Good Year blimp were fantastic. Rick Allen had excitement and was in control. He quickly recaped the field many times today. Michael Waltrip was kept in check. The pit reporters did a great job offering useful information and intelligent questions. This was an enjoyable race & broadcast to watch.

Dot said...

In case someone from SPEED is reading, BRAVO.

Vicky D said...

Dot, I second that!

Tripp said...

I agree. Top marks across the board. Full stop.

Sally said...

A standing ovation for SPEED!

Bill_R said...

This broadcast proves that sometimes less is more. Fewer announcers talking, judicious use of in car cameras, not cutting away from the action to show some silly toy that no one cares about. More long views showing all the racing, more mentions of more of the teams and their sponsors. Other than missing the Tayler Malsam interview after his wreck I can't find much fault in this broadcast. Great job by Speed of showing us what we came to see.

Richard in N.C. said...

David, yes I am biased, I'm a fan, but I think when Morgan did S&P it was so he could afford to race another day - and he would be in much better shape now if he had S&P'd some this year, but he didn't. My impression is that MSRP is in N-wide just for the money and has no interest in trying to compete - just gaming the system.

Daly Planet Editor said...

How about offering a final comment on the coverage from SPEED if you have not?

Then we can let Mr. Pistone and all the other "mainstream media" know that we are fans with opinions.

Good race, best broadcast I have seen in years. I couldn't find anything to complain about so I didn't.

If Chrissy Wallace becomes as good a driver as Chrissy Oliver was she'll be the best driver in the Wallace family:-)

The Loose Wheel said...

SPEED nailed it tonight! Nuff said!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yes, right here. I want the media guys who are climbing all over me to read what fans think.

I have no idea what NASCAR is doing or why they are squeezing these guys right now.

Wish I could be a fly on the wall for those town hall meetings this week.

Sally said...

I was interested in the meetings that Nascar had about the COT. With all the driveability issues, the big decision is to make the fron fascia look more like the actual street cars? Yeah, that's a big help. Better decals?

Anonymous said...

JD- I haven't watched Trackside in years, now I understand why. The past 15 minutes have had 0 to do with racing. Just a lot of WOOOOO!!!!, ShamWow, and WOOOOO!!!! If I wanted to watch 5 guys in costume scream and laugh I would have gone to a Halloween party.

Newracefan said...

Speed did an amazing job, I found the only time I multi-tasked was during commercials. The pit reporters, the booth, the cameras it just all worked and worked well. The only drawback we will be even more disappointed with the coverage tomorrow.

This was a fantastic broadcast from start to finish. Luv Set-up & the FUN the gang had w/the Batman theme! Then they called an exciting race w/out tons of bells & whistles, just good old fashion enthusiasm & GREAT camera work! Lots of over-heard shots, lots of from the front shots, very few in-camera shots. Best race of the year broadcasting-wise from ALL the networks....and I HATE the plate races!

WickedJ said...

Elliott isnt the only one crying tears of laughter..

Steve L. said...

This isn't the only good race I've seen on Speed this year, they've all been pretty good. But this is the best one on Speed this year by far.
Camera work was excellent, direction was great, the booth was informative and exciting, pit reporting was timely, accurate, and to the point.
This race was up there with one of the best I've seen on TV. Great job Speed.
It will make tomorrows Cup race look terrible. I'm already dreading Dr. Punch and company and what they will pass off to us fans as coverage of a potentially good race.

Me too, wickedj! This whole SPEED day has been fun!

Newracefan said...

ESad needs to be careful or we will be seeing way more then we're suppose too.

Unknown said...

at least speed can have some fun, with the prerace and now this. the only "fun" you will see from espn tomorrow is a monotone "happy halloween" and the countdown logo carved into a pumpkin.

Anonymous said...

NASCAR didn't exactly police the bump drafting today as that was something that SPEED kept pointing out ... which is a PLUS for SPEED ...

Only complaints are: Mikey still having the grudge toward Grampa ... and ... No post-Infield Care Center interview with Tayler Malsam ... Some of us "back home" really would like to know that he IS okay (& not have to wait til he posts on Facebook or whatever) ...

J_Fellenbaum said...

Well I hit submit, but got an error, so I'll try to touch on all the points of my first, now lost, novel!

Great job by everyone involved today! The broadcast was absouletly fantastic and the race on the track was great as well.

I have absolutely no complaints. I was kept informed during the race, the shots were wide, the in car camera was limited and correctly used to recreate and review issues on the track via replay.

Everyone at Speed should pat themselves on the back. They did a fantastic job. The trio in the booth kept the energy high and they were informative...Michael Waltrip kept himself in check, and provided some great analysis, and wasn't afraid to assign blame during a wreck, calling twitter favorite max papis a "dart without feathers" Not an endearing name to be called, but very applicable to the situation.

Rick and Phil did a fantastic job like always. This a team with much time together and they know how to call a race.

The pit reporters where fantastic today. They kept up on the information and they were used often and provided great information.

Actually the big wreck was called by the pit reporter. Alexandar was giving an update when the wreck started on the backstretch. He immediatly left his update and called the big wreck until the pxp team was ready to take over again. That was a small but fantastic little part of the broadcast. One can only wonder what that situation would be like if another outfit had that same situation arise.

And KV....holly cow. She is fantastic. I hope she is by far and away the highest paid pit reporter in Nascar. She is fantastic!

Over a great great day of racing...and I hate plate racing :) lol

WickedJ said...

God bless the mute button

SPEED rocks! Awesome job! <3

The Loose Wheel said...

SPEED was on it. Maybe Rick sounded a bit too excited early when the race was single file up front but it beats the monotone ramblings of JP that ESPN seems to have mandated. The dropdown at the line is a VERY useful tool because you see 15 plus drivers at the same time, and not just 3 seconds of flying heads followed by more flying heads.

The pit reporters were on it today, though a Tayler Malsam interview would have been nice considering that hit he took. But when you only have that small bump in an other wise smooth road, thats a darn good thing to be proud of!

Cut back on the gimmicks, cover the race and be genuine. There's nothing complicated, difficult, expensive, or boring about it. If you have to "enhance" the broadcast with gimmicks and fluff then you probably shouldn't be covering the races to start with IMO.

Regarding the COT and all that fun stuff...I'll save it for another topic.

kbaskins said...

I'm dyin' here.

Well it was GREAT to enjoy Talladega today but I could've used more headlights than blimpshots..I was using the 20 inch tv in LR and answering door for Halloween....not many kids but just in case. And the cars looked like ants at times. Sorry we don't have the 40, 50 or 60 inch tvs!

Other than that it was FABULOUS not having to have the race PERSPECTIVE interrupted by in car/roof cam/bumper cam virus.

So get your MRN bookmarks ready for the CUP race or local radio.

Otherwise, BSPN's P U camera work will just annoy and irritate.

On another note, am working on a project on computer. Who is Steve Byrnes supposed to be in the blond wig?? and the other guys...I get Jeff is a pirate?

But Steve... lol :)

Luv the headstones & JH in eyeliner-a show-stopper for sure! Just a great TV day overall on Speed! Have to say, don't get the Henry costume by ESad tho, but still funny.

kbaskins said...

Thank you Anon and others. Ric Flair...I think he's some WWE person...the guys seemed to be having a blast and wished I would've known this was coming on...

got an email and then was buried in sorting pics for project. Fun to see the guys having so much fun.

What's really scary about Jeff's eye linter is some women STILL wear that heavy kind of eyeliner!!

In the 60's and early 70's that was popular but had a better look to it.
:)

Not that I am old enough to remember. . .

PammH said...

okay Sophia, wink, wink about the eyeliner..me too! it was a great day on Speed.

Sophia said...

PammH

and others,

YES, SPEED was fun even though I was very tired and did not multi task and just *GASP* had the tv on..but I had GREAT CAMERA SHOTS and you know what, I did not yell at the tv once except ask for a few less of the blimp shots..but heck, I will take those over my previous gripes.

Just a shame we LOVE SPEED, the guys on SPEED, they GET LESS is MORE..then we turn on ESPN and it's like a contest to see how much they can ruin the race.

Mind boggling actually but I'm repeating myself.

It's like SPEED is the cool guy/girl you want to date and ESPN was the one with potential who loved being a drama queen and played games.

No thanks.

The guys in the booth for the Truck race took the cake though. :-)

Newracefan said...

Some of Trackside was a little lame but other parts well I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. The best part was the guys were obviously having a great time and to be able to do that for a living is something very special.

TexasRaceLady said...

Now that I have finished laughing and wiping up the tears, maybe I can comment about SPEED's "total package" Saturday.

I LOVED the costumes in the pre-race. The booth guys took the prize, though. Michael was perfectly cast as the Joker. Great job guys. Krista made a great Batgirl

The truck race coverage was the best I've seen in a long time. I never had to wonder what was going on because the booth and pit reporters kept me in the loop.

The camera work was on top of everything that happened. In-car cams, roof cams were not overused. When used, the pictures were relevant to the action on the track. The use of blimp shots was spectacular.

I wasn't constantly bombarded with useless information -- as in, the points "if the race ended now". It was only presented when it became relevant --- when Ron was in the wreck.

The drop-down finishing order told me everything at a glance.

Now, as for the special Trackside. Oh. My. Gosh. The guys just had me howling. My ribs hurt, I couldn't catch my breath, I was crying I was laughing so hard.

The premise of the program was to entertain and have fun doing it. The team succeeded most definitely.

2 thumbs up, SPEED. I've had a great Saturday.

PS -- to any media who feels that we fans are only negative in our comments --- sorry I had to bust your bubble.

Dot said...

@ TRL, ditto.

Prerace was a hoot! Who ever knew Batman had a mustache?! Ray and Adam were great again, and I'm really, really glad they didn't wear dresses again this year!

Speed did a good job with the race. I still don't care for in car or bumper cams at this track or any track. But they are good to replay the wrecks. Good job by Rick and Phil in the booth and by the pit reporters. I tune Mikey out, so I don't know how he was.

Trackside after the race was funny for about the first 5 minutes and then it was just stupid. Twenty minutes of my life I'll never get back (I turned it off after about 20 min).

A OT question about Pete Pistone JD, is he related to Tiger Tom Pistone? I met him years ago at Charlotte.

The bad part to the day ending is realizing that next year Halloween is on Sunday. Maybe SPEED will do a pre-Halloween broadcast since we know we won't get fun from ESPN.

the race coverage was GREAT!!! the guys in the booth were having a blast.(thats a big thing missing from ABC's booth) there wasn't alot of in-car camera shots, but the ones they showed were good. and i wasn't confused by the camera shots constantly switching. the pit reporters are always good on speed.

i laughed quite a bit during the prerace show and trackside was crazy. some great fun between co-workers who really enjoy their jobs and each other (if not they put on a good act) and rutlidge talkin like michael waltrip was hillarious!!!great job speed channel!!!!

p.s. Race Hub is a great show! speed should promote it more. it would be great to see it continue past the homestead race.

.......after such a great race and broadcast i'm thinking, ok, its talladega.....ABC couldn't screw up a race from talladega could they?...then i remember watching a replay of last years race earlier this week....hope something changes
