Live Blogging The Truck Series In Daytona (SPEED - 6:30PM)
The familiar team returns for SPEED to cover the only national caliber NASCAR series carried by the network from start to finish. The formula is now familiar.
SPEED has perfected the "less is more" philosophy of producing NASCAR races. Two pit reporters, Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander, cover pit road. One host, Krista Voda, handles the entire thirty minute pre-race show.
Once the race starts, Rick Allen lends his brand of excitement by calling the play by play action. Allen may be a homer, but it is very clear he feels personally attached to the teams and drivers in the Camping World Truck Series. SPEED likes the emphasis on what is going on at the front of the pack and the volume level on high.
Speaking of volume, Michael Waltrip will be stepping back into the CWTS booth to offer color commentary again this season. Waltrip keeps himself updated on the series, but sometimes has an internal battle about how to fit into a three man TV booth.
Alongside of Waltrip is Phil Parsons, also a former driver. Rather than go with the typical driver and crew chief combination, SPEED has kept these two personalities together. Most of the time, the two split the commentary and replay explanations.
The trucks have been the biggest victims of the financial squeeze. Top drivers like Johnny Benson and Rick Crawford have been forced to the sidelines. Crawford has a ride for tonight, but his future on the track this season is unknown.
It will be very cold tonight in Daytona, but the weather is clear and the trucks always look good under the lights. The SPEED producer and director team up to keep the focus on the best racing on the track and leave the hype and special effects behind.
This post will host your comments about the TV coverage on SPEED of the Camping World Truck Series from Daytona. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by!
TDP is also available on Twitter at twitter.com/TheDalyPlanet and Facebook.
Benson is racing tonight
ReplyDeleteRyan,
ReplyDeleteI did not say JB was not, just that he was sidelined last season.
JB has a potentially good thing going this season and not so for Rick Crawford.
Trying to point out that someone who is a mainstay of the series is in trouble after this week.
Thanks for pointing that out.
JD
Krista is very good on-air, but MAN she need wardrobe help....BAD! What the hell is she wearing?
ReplyDeleteyou have to love Krista Voda on the pre race show. what a professional that some should watch
ReplyDeleteMr Editor -
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of sounding too nostalgic for many of your followers, all is well in NASCAR land ...Dr Punch is back in his element and sounded at-home ...on NASCAR Live, NASCAR exec Jim Hunter put it best when asked how the sport can recoup its popularity, saying "By doing just this, sharing the new faces and telling the stories of our history ...Max Papis was inspiring and the King said, "We are not down, just leveled off like the economy" ..."it will be back" ...seems to me these simple things bode well for a good 2010
Walter
Walter, I am hoping that SPEED can top off a great TV day for the sport and really set-up the race tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'll give my first S&P report for the season. With some of last year's S&P teams "selling" their owner points, it appears the only S&P team tonight will be the #21 SS Green Light Racing Dodge.
ReplyDeleteI assume the Rick Ware Racing and Daisy Ramirez Motorsports trucks will go the distance and Norm Benning was known last year to make a legitimate effort to race all day.
Wow, MV! That would be great! I know they have a long break before the next race as well.
ReplyDeleteHave NO idea who Krista was talking about in regards to Snooky. I'm old, I don't watch that crap.
ReplyDeleteDear God Benning will run all day but he will be a rolling bus stop along the way much like Thursday.
ReplyDelete21 is a start and park.
I really am pulling for Jason White though
Love the new flagstand!
ReplyDeleteTemp 47, feels like 44°, WNW winds at 6 mph at Daytona right now.
ReplyDeleteWelp, that's 2 for 2 sucking at the anthem so far.
ReplyDeleteMan, that is going to be cold for the fans up in the stands with the wind blowing!
ReplyDeleteMV, you wouldn't happen to know exactly what former Roush truck Jason White is driving. They said the #95 is the #6 that ran Talladega in the fall but is the #23 the truck from Daytona last Feb or a different truck?
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be freezing for those fans. Hope they got their longjohns on today.
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting to see if this works out tonight or looks like the ARCA race.
ReplyDeleteJD I really feel this race will be spectacular. It will have wrecks but it will also have a better likelihood of having a last lap pass. I really just despise that NW aero package and think it is the worst race of Speedweeks aside from the ARCA race.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow will be nothing short of amazing the final 40 laps.
Thank you Phil Parsons for answering that question I had!
As long as David Starr doesn't wreck, his fans in Houston will be really happy. He's got his teammate right next to him on the start.
ReplyDeleteSpoke too soon.
ReplyDeleteNot the start the series was looking for. Let's see the replay.
ReplyDeleteAustin Dillon panicked and wadded em up I feel...
ReplyDeleteMakes for an interesting race now.
Crafton barely made it
ReplyDeletedang it!
ReplyDeleteThat really took the wind out of the sails for the trucks.
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to find a Leaderboard for this race. Nascar.com is running radio broadcast only.
ReplyDelete@David - I couldn't tell you what Roush trucks went to what teams, I'm just guessing White's truck was one of the good Roush trucks since he opted to leave it intact instead of reskinning it into a Dodge.
ReplyDeleteI did hear Kyle Busch say his truck was a Roush truck and he cut the nose off to make it into a Toyota.
@NorCalFan - You won't find a Leaderboard, there has never been one for the Truck races. There's not even a Live Qualifying available anymore for this series.
ReplyDeleteMV, Parsons said White's truck was Braun's backup truck from last year
ReplyDeleteUhhh, glitchy much SPEED?
ReplyDeleteWhat's going on with the video feed? It just disappeared twice in less than 5 minutes and the audio was muffled the second time.
ReplyDelete@David - Would you happen to know how long Donny Lia is expected to race the #21? He's running 16th at this time and the #08 truck always dropped to the back and quit early last year.
ReplyDelete#49 McCumbee is listed as "off". Is he a S&P?
ReplyDeleteLooked like an uplink glitch for SPEED. Maybe the wind?
ReplyDeleteMV I was just about to ask you that. Im guessing since it is Daytona they will try to run all day. Probably an old Jason White truck they are running and the purse money might be enough to justify trying to get a top 10?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletewell, that's disappointing for me. I was looking forward to watching Landon Cassill race tonight. What a shame to have a wreck on the first lap.
ReplyDeleteCold is right, JD. Windy and night time racing makes for a cold night. I hope the people there have their long undies on!
Are they under caution again?
ReplyDelete@David - If Donny Lia was going to park the truck, he likely would have stayed home in New York to be with his girlfriend and newborn baby. Bobby Dotter or Johnny Chapman could have run the 3 laps and parked it in his place. He's probably going to go the distance.
ReplyDeleteRicky got into him. Ever so little but he got there
ReplyDeleteDarn, is this going to be a race of attrition?
ReplyDeleteI wish they would reset the field.
ReplyDeleteThe adrenaline needs to be taken down a notch. This has become a costly race for team owners.
ReplyDeleteLooked like Carmichael barely touched Hornaday but it could have felt totally different.
I really wish we had online scoring. It would be real nice now with this many trucks wrecked.
ReplyDeleteLooked like Ricky got there as Ron was moving up. Bad deal.
ReplyDeleteGo Max. He and Piquet survive.
ReplyDeleteFYI, saw a big billboard off the 91 freeway today advertising Danica's Nascar race at Fontana. There is to be no relief.
I give Ricky alot of credit to stand up there and take the blame. Good job by SPEED covering that wreck
ReplyDeleteAnd classy of Hornaday not to point fingers.
ReplyDeleteNot many trucks left in this race-good grief! And Mikey is not being over the top for some reason. Pretty gd coverage so far.
ReplyDeleteMikey pointed out the big crowd, but let's not forget the ticket holders for the Nationwide race could stay to watch the Truck race. Don't know if the attendance would have been that big had the race been held last night.
ReplyDeleteI agree MW really hasn't bothered me too much tonight but I was screaming at the duals coverage so my expectations for tomorrow are not high.
ReplyDeletePhil's overly talking about Piquet Jr is getting annoying...
ReplyDeleteBump drafting on the back straightaway today has cost owners some big $$ during today's double-header.
ReplyDeleteWould like to see a track graphic of where "bumps gone wrong" happened today.
Maybe, Nationwide could turn it into a "safety report."
Maybe KB will get his laps back yet. A live leaderboard sure would be nice right now with about 20 trucks left in the race and some of them are laps down.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, really good broadcast and excellent overhead replays on the accidents.
Oooooh. Skinner isn't happy that Kyle B was pushing a ford, is he?
ReplyDeleteMax Papis in the top ten.....
ReplyDeleteWhy don't they have soft walls there? That's right its an ISC track
ReplyDeleteTurned on the broadcast to see what was going and dangit, 2 minutes and MW has me ready to turn it off. He can't shut his mouth even when he knows what he is saying is wrong......
ReplyDeleteOhh, how do the Toyota prancing idiots in the booth have the balls to not even comment when Skinner calls out Busch for messing with the race when he is 20 laps down. Not that Skinner is right but man, that is a comment from a driver that should be discussed.
TV guys should put into the contracts that announers can't accept money from spnosors.
I still can figure out why the ratings are down though....arrgg...
Kyle Busch is asking to be dumped, he is what 18 laps down get out of the way already.
ReplyDeletewhy didn't they just break away from that break?
ReplyDeleteMr editor, are the Truck races blogs usually this slow?
ReplyDeletethis is about normal
ReplyDeleteMW just said something about KB and he's right, he should get out the way or somebody should wreck him!
ReplyDeleteThe truck blogs are always the slowest because the SPEED coverage has been better than the Cup or Nationwide series TV.
ReplyDeleteThis same TV package has been working for fans for many years now.
Only one that gets comments is MW and he has been pretty good tonight.
I think KB is going to push the 95 to the win
ReplyDeleteI'm not usually here for the truck races, I just watch them. I live here for the cup races except when they are on TNT
ReplyDelete18 bowed out of lead pack
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow. that was quite a finish.
ReplyDeletebodine tried to block, should have stayed where he was, mw blew that
ReplyDeleteThis should be an interesting Todd Bodine interview.
ReplyDeletewow, another great truck finish.
ReplyDeleteGood interview with Todd our guy finished 19th after being in 2 wrecks!
ReplyDeleteClassy interview....nice.
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled for Timothy. I was pulling for Jason White big time but no one could really get that outside going
ReplyDeleteGreat race. Congrats to Peters. I stayed off of here so I could see the whole race. After all, who wants to miss one of the best races of the year?
ReplyDeleteit was a great race last 13 laps, all I got home in time for. But I must say, Mikey was not annoying and I thought he actually brought up some good points, at least in the short segment I saw. was impressed with Todd's interview, the last couple years, I think he finally gets it.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a great week or racing so far.
ReplyDeleteMost refreshing? GRACIOUS losers as oppposed to spoiled brats stomping off to their cribs or throwing people under the bus. Great job.
We got a DVR box for the new 52 inch tv! SPEED in HD is fab. My room mate treated himself to a DVR and after the flying chunk of ice from a mofo semi trashed his windshield today--GRATEFUL to be alive and in center lane of Interstate when it happened!!--- he had fun setting up DVR tonight and playing with it.
So, I guess we've reached the new technology Era. My eyes hurt too bad to figure out how to program the new deal so I will still tape DAYTONA on 2 VCR's tomorrow while I hear Mardi Gras tunes. The pub should have tvs of the race on.
Roomie will try DVRing 500 for me.
I thought MW was great tonight and my housemate enjoyed him. A little too much constant chatter in the booth...could've had more quiet moments to let the GREAT CAMERA work speak for itself. Like seeing somebody different win.
THANK YOU SPEED for not interrupting the flow or the race with in car cams/bumper cams.
WIDES SHOTS ARE THE WAY TO GO!
Daytona looked beautiful.
:)
I have to admit, other than having Waltrip in the booth th broadcase was GREAT!!!!! I hope tommorows Cup race will be as good!
ReplyDeleteGreat show as usual. The amount of non bus action was amazing. Crazy wrecks and people not instantly flying off the handle. Even the vets when a younger driver helped them out of the race weren't mad. For some reason the trucks seem to understand new people need to learn. New people mess up.
ReplyDeleteGet the cup cars to run like the trucks and look out. Some of the best racing around from little to big tracks.
Coverage great as usual. My wal-meter must be zoning out because mikey wasn't as annoying as usual.
Great racing great coverage. Too bad the trucks don't get more love from nascar.
Just got finished watching the race on my Tivo. Very good job by SPEED other than the video glitches at the start of the race. Rick Allen stands out in his role as usual, be great if SPEED and TNT could arrange it for him to call the mid-season Cup races this year.
