Live Blogging Nationwide Series in Charlotte (2PM ET - ABC)
This Memorial Day weekend is busy for motorsports. ABC will televise both the Indy 500 and today's race.
Nicole Briscoe will host the pre-race and anchor from the Infield Pit Center for the NASCAR on ESPN gang in Charlotte. She will be joined by Dale Jarrett and Brad Daugherty. I am told that there may be a special guest as well. The telecast starts at 2PM ET.
Dale Jarrett will be moving up to the broadcast booth where he will be joining Allen Bestwick and Andy Petree. Marty Smith is in Indy working that race on Sunday.
Also in Indy are Jerry Punch, Jamie Little and Vince Welch. That puts Mike Massaro, Shannon Spake and Dave Burns on pit road for the Charlotte Nationwide Series race. Yes, Tim Brewer will also be on-site in the Tech Garage.
ESPN has come along way and this weekend has the potential to be electric. Stories are unfolding in this series as the Sprint Cup drivers are going to be racing in front of the hometown crowd in cars that are intended only to win. No point battles, just racing for the top spot in front of family and friends.
The weather is good, the camera placement is outstanding and SPEED has already shown the Nationwide cars are flying on the track this weekend. This should be fun.
This post will host your comments about the ABC/ESPN coverage of the Nationwide Series from Charlotte. To add your comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.
2pm-fox???
ReplyDeleteNationwide races are on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, though JD you said ABC had the Indy 500 and Coke 600, that was a little typo there... =)
ReplyDeleteYou forgot that "NASCAR Countdown" is once again pre-empted in Seattle on Fisher Broadcasting/Communication's-owned KOMO-tv ... with a 4-year old rerun of "Hannah Montana" ... LOL
ReplyDeletecoke 600 on ABC?
ReplyDeleteSo much for cut and paste!
ReplyDeleteLots of stuff on the cup and Indy side not too much so far on the NW race that'll be in a bit. Surely ABC will show some NW regulars in the race.
ReplyDelete600 is on fox
ReplyDeleteInteresting seeing Helio...of course that's all about cross promoting
Hey, I am getting weather emails. Is there rain in the area in Charlotte??
ReplyDeleteInteresting they did not pick Danica....just saying....
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a Nascar pre-race show.... could have done without the open wheel racer interview from Indy.
ReplyDelete"and the today's race"
ReplyDeleteDid you mention you hate your laptop JD?
LOL
Danica....well, even I am starting to sour on her with her attitude right now...
David, I am currently redefining holiday weekend multi-tasking!
ReplyDeleteAs an over-the-air viewer far outside the market I have yet to see ESPN's efforts, NASCAR-wise. After the FOX-ups during the beginning of the season, its a wonder anyone is left to watch live - I know DVR is about the only thing that makes races watchable today, which makes lousy PxP a shame because the radio relies on the live (although the few times I could be bothered to sync the digital video and the MRN audio were sublime) and I suppose this is all a roundabout way of saying DO THIS RIGHT, TWWL OR I WON'T COME BACK
ReplyDeleteWhich is, of course, a lie.
That's what we like to see and hear, an enthusiastic preacher with a tattoo on his forearm, and a bluegrass singer who can actually sing The National Anthem.
ReplyDeleteAB in the booth!
ReplyDelete...can we just glue him to the PBP chair & leave him there for the rest of ESPN's races this season? haha
The graphics are interesting today....this may be the first time I'm noticing them unless they are new?
ReplyDeleteRhonda was better than some ... But, not the best ... Mispronunciations and a couple slightly off-key notes ...
ReplyDeleteBut, then again, I'm a harsh critic ... LOL ;-)
Missed the pre-race show, but ABC is playing up "Unhappy Danica" for ratings ... People have missed the "Unhappy Kanaan" stories (esp from last season) ...
I think they should nix the booth to crew chief question of the day. Cute pit crew member of the race though.
ReplyDeleteIs there a link out there for ESPN Racecast? Don't see one anywhere on ESPN's NASCAR site.
ReplyDelete"After this message and a word from our ABC stations" . . . that's still the cue for a local break?
ReplyDeleteAnon at 2:48. If you go onto nascar.com and click on Live Nationwide Series Race and it'll bring up the live leaderboard.
ReplyDeleteIckler about killed Steinhouse...good job catching it before he did.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both Jr. #1.
ReplyDeleteThe Will Power - Justin Allgaier commercial was good though.
What a start...and restart!
ReplyDeleteTraffic jam on pit road.
ReplyDeleteGreat use of the in-car there.
ReplyDeleteThat was interesting....
So we get the picture, though it wasn't being called and had an awkward cut --incident-- and when you go to replay the first time you miss what you initially had live and have to go back a second time to get the correct shot? That sequence was likely aces on the AM audio, poor show...
ReplyDeleteOh, I see, it was ruined by an in-car shot. Great, haven't seen that before. It was still mostly silence during... try to keep up.
Anon 2:48
ReplyDeleteESPN RaceCast:
http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/rpm/racecast?raceId=201005290314
Now we have Foxes doing commercials, what animal will we see next on the Nascar broadcasts?
ReplyDeleteThanks longtime I must be blind today because I still don't see a link on ESPN's Nascar site LOL
ReplyDeleteI hope the tv guys don't just show the cup guys doing the "good" racing, and the Nationwide guys causing the wrecks.
ReplyDeleteAnon, the link isn't on the front page. It's under the Nationwide "Schedule" tab.
ReplyDeleteKOMO-tv put opaque graphics up telling us that "Suite Life of Zack & Cody" would be on at 3pm ... OVER the ABC graphics telling us "who" the woman was that was attempting to sing the National Anthem ...
ReplyDeleteCouldn't really read either set of graphics ... D'oh!
We love Seattle!
ReplyDeleteWho gets the short night hosting Nascar Now tomorrow? Mike Massaro? I assume our pit studio host will be in Indianapolis.
ReplyDeleteOh no not TB in the tech center!
ReplyDeleteIf you are new to NASCAR and have never seen a wedge wrench before . . .
ReplyDeleteAnon, it will be Ryan Burr hosting NN with Shannon and Marty Smith at CMS.
ReplyDeleteJD, the other night we recorded NN but it wasn't the show it was some other nonsense on ESPN.
ReplyDeleteI think a live French Open match pushed it back one night this week.
ReplyDeleteThe guide showed NN but it wasn't. Bad week to record shows on ESPN, I guess. Maybe next week will be better. I can't believe there are only 13 cars on the lead lap.
ReplyDeleteIt looked like Trever Bayne hit the wall and never mentioned from booth.

ReplyDeletePretty solid telecast after that first blip. What do you guys think?
ReplyDeleteJD, here we go again with too many cup guys in the race, and there's too much emphasis on them. I will give BK a pass since this is his first year in cup.
ReplyDeleteIt is decent, I think they have missed out on some opportunities to use a little depth during that green run to talk about lesser discussed drivers. Willie Allen is having a pretty good run today as is Ickler
ReplyDeleteNo problems so far. Good visuals. Strong booth chemistry between Allen, Dale and Andy. Pit reporting is timely and interesting. Nicole and the guys are cool, and it's good that Vickers is adding his comments. Not too many commercials or promos.
ReplyDeleteThe only down side: 9 of 13 cars on the lead lap are Cuppers. Boo.
AB sounded lackadaisical when he announced Joey taking over the lead from Brad ... Like "oh big ho hum Sliced Bread's leading in the Nationwide race" ...
ReplyDeleteThe "chemistry" is boorriiinnngg. Sorry, for all their warts, DW & the FOX gang are more interesting to listen to.
ReplyDeleteGood broadcast? On the replay of the 99 hitting the wall just now, they switch to a REAR bumper cam! Why? Because there's smoke & debris, not because they want to let us see what actually happened :-(
From jim_utter Overheard in the Press Box: "Steven Wallace is the Steven Wallace of the Nationwide Series"
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised ESPN doesn't mention that the 43 is a Baker Curb car as well...
ReplyDeleteCan't believe they zoomed in on the last lap and missed everything that happened. Can't believe it.
ReplyDeleteYeah I got peeved about that call on the last lap. I knew BK would get the run in 3-4 and instead they went to Biffle after he was already in the fence and darn near missed the run to the checker. That was a horrible camera selection/zoom/cuts on the last lap. Even an overzoomed camera for the burndown. I really wish we could just tape over the zoom in button on these damn cameras.
ReplyDeleteWe are live blogging the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 tomorrow, please join us!
ReplyDeleteGood finishes by Ickler & Clements. I wonder if we'll get a shoutout from the booth!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by everyone, see you tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteThe local ESPN Broadcast Network affiliate (WOLO) started running ads telling people to get off Dish (they are leaving Dish Monday) and it made it impossible to watch the race as a good 3/8 of the screen was showing information on it.
