CLOSED: Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Dover (12PM - FOX)

Update: I closed this live blog at halfway because I could not take another two hours of watching the TV coverage from NASCAR on FOX. Thanks to the fans who stopped by, although most of them had left long before I closed the chat. This was the worst TV coverage of a NASCAR race in the four years of the current TV contract.

Here we go with a fast-paced race from the Monster Mile in Dover, DE. There are only two Sprint Cup Series points races remaining for the NASCAR on FOX gang this season.

Chris Myers hosts the pre-race show from the Hollywood Hotel. Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond are alongside of Myers. This is a full one-hour show, so it may have some extended interviews and features. The rumor is that David Hill, the top FOX Sports executive, is moving to change the format of the pre-race show.

Mike Joy has seemed tired this season. There might be some great reasons why. Larry McReynolds and Waltrip have dominated Joy during the exciting portions of the racing. In the past, Joy made memorable calls that lived on in highlights for years. Now, it's they hysterical screams of Waltrip and McReynolds that mark excitement on the track, including the final laps.

In response, Joy has seemed at times more like ESPN's Jerry Punch during his ill-fated time in the booth. The excitement level is definitely down and the domination of Waltrip shows no sign of slacking anytime soon.

On pit road are the best reporters in the sport. Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Dick Berggren and Krista Voda represent a lot of NASCAR experience. The emphasis of the telecasts, particularly in the later stages of the race, has not included these four talented individuals.

This is a big week for FOX because of Director Artie Kempner. His annual charity golf tournament supporting Autism research was this week and featured TV personalities, drivers and supporters of the cause. Hopefully, there will be a recap of this event on the program.

Dover is a grind for television networks. The laps are relatively fast, the camera angles are very different and there are two obstructions over the track. The low-angle cameras that pick up the cars coming off the turns are frequently in use. Keeping the corner in the camera shot is important, as most of the action takes place through the corners.

FOX has already announced that they will be doing an extended post-race show over on the SPEED network. Not really sure how that is going over with the SPEED gang, who will be taping the Victory Lane post-race show in the background while FOX is live.

This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from Dover. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

  1. Hey folks! Here we go from Dover. No rain and a nice day.

  2. Good Morning all
I hope I can watch the entire race today without getting fed up & watching just with the radio & leaderboard.
    Heres hoping.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Say whatever you want but if there is an event on Fox it just feels bigger, and better!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Good start to the day by Fox.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Be interesting to see if Pizi actually has a driver on or if it's just a "Best of" piece. The last several Sunday races, there hasn't been a driver on during Pizi. Talladega it was about fans in the infield.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Is it a promise Pizi will never be on tv anywhere ever again?

    ReplyDelete
  7. They must've recorded all of these Pizzi segments while they were in Daytona in February during media day.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fox has earned an extremely short leash from me. I'll turn it on at Green Flag. Got Sirius ready so I can bail.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Pizzi is actually funnier than that. He needs new writers or that show needs to go.
It was stupid to say the least and not funny.
His efforts are better used behind the camera.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good job on the golf tourney , & mention of the winners from the crew. Wish all the pre race gave us more good stuff like this.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh, Lord help me, I turned on FOX just in time for Pizzi.

    My eyes, my eyes!

    Please, he won't be back?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank heaven Pizi is no longer going to be on. Another Hill failure. That man needs to learn that we race fans have an IQ higher than 50.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good riddance production truck amateur "comedian". The only good thing to say about it is that I'm glad Fox quickly realized their mistake and gave up on the thing, just like they did when the Digger cartoon quickly halted prudction and moved to reruns last year. God help us when the TPTB at Fox get together to come up with next year's short lived and quickly scrapped follow-up to Digger & Friends and Slice of Pizzi.

  14. @Anon 12:17 - I thought that someone had confirmed that, but I can't find it anywhere.

Just finished watching the NW race from yesterday. Excellent broadcast. AP and DJ have a great back-and-forth dialogue; it's like they know exactly where the other is headed on any given topic. And they let Marty Reid do his job as PxP, which he does well (especially calling out the S&Ps). And instead of following Kyle Busch's domination, ESPN found the racing back in the pack.

Here's hoping that FOX picks up on at least the last one of these. That's something they can fix quickly. I'm not sure they can fix either of the other two without kicking DW out of the booth, but miracles do happen.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Andrew, ESPN is loaded for bear. That whole group is pumped for the Cup coverage to start in July. I really hope they plug Ricky Craven into the booth for the Nationwide Series races.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Really like the northeast sports thing, and the Pizzi thing made me laugh, I admit it!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is there anything that you have learned in the Fox pre-race that you didn't know already.
Sprint has a new phone is one. That will help during the race for some drivers, I guess. This show could be viewed during the week.
How is the track. What about tires. Are pit stops going to be something to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm liking this stuff on the Hall of Fame. If they're not going to talk about the race, at least they're talking about something huge in NASCAR right now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. They most certainly reduced Hammond's role as they finally realized he is or was just a pretty boy wanna be for Junior Johnson with no modern race knowledge. The sport has also outgrown the redneck character that it once had as made evident by the classy broadcast by ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tony is sporting a touch of grey now a days. Might come with ownership.

    ReplyDelete
  21. TVTrucker,

Not sure if you have seen Race Hub on SPEED, but Hammond is a regular. I also have heard he is under consideration for an additional show on SPEED.

Yesterday, when DW was attending a graduation ceremony, Hammond filled in up in the booth.

Should be interesting to see what FOX changes for next season.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bob Pockrass is reporting that Bobby Labonte may be a start and park car this week. That is a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @JD - Agreed, but hopefully they're saving money to compete in the All-Star Race.

    ReplyDelete
  24. JD, they might let him host "Fast Track to Fame" or some create show to keep him happy. LOL
The Talent contracts are up soon for renewal. My calculation is next year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Looks like FTTF is going to end the first week in June. Waiting to see what SPEED unveils...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I also liked your comments on Speed and their role in the future of Broadcasting yesterday.
I know they are being groomed for the lead in the NASCAR Media Group "big picture" plans.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If we're lucky they'll give Hammond his own show ala Spencer :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I still cannot believe that Chris Myers interviewed Hendrick. With all the good NASCAR TV veterans on that TV team, what a weird choice.

    ReplyDelete
  29. David Hill and Jay Abraham from NMG are buds. There are major changes coming.

SPEED2, the online channel, was started to get non-NASCAR races off the main network.

Just a matter of time before the other shoe drops IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Steve Bryrns would have been a better first choice as an interviewer maybe, but--- Chris is a good interviewer also. Why do you not think so?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Krista, Steve, Matt.....anyone but Myers.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can someone PLEASE shut Waldrip from commenting on medical procedures? I would take his "opinions" less seriously than those of my family dog, Della. Am elated that Pissi won't be on my tv screen any longer. Can that Hill person of Fox finally getting the message from fans? Oh my...

    ReplyDelete
  33. JC, he repeated almost exactly what the ESPN medical expert said on "NASCAR Now" this morning.

Only thing DW did not do was say where he got that info.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Want some ratings? Throw in some Jr radio chatter, then let DW opine on it. ick..

    ReplyDelete
  35. @TVtrucker- maybe because Myers comes across as 100% cheese?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey everyone, Im awake finally lol

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fans were chanting "Let's go Flyers" earlier said reporter Jeff Gluck. Too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  38. One of the better renditions of the National Anthem in a while!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I want that singer every week.

    Nice Job.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Don't think there will be many fans in the stands if we have three GWC attempts today

    ReplyDelete
  41. The knee deal is old news. What happened to talking about racing set ups, garage news, feuds, and more pre-race driver interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Start and parks I project:

    #09
    #36
    #87
    #55
    #66
    #46

And yes, as JD heard, with that blue blank 71, they could be as well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Another outstanding pre-race show from FOX.

Of course if I was getting paid by the four letter I would start a blog and rag the f&*k out of them each week.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love the 43 car. That is a true racing hero! The King!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Camera person showed alot of the S&Ps during the anthem & prayer. Thought that was an interesting choice.

    ReplyDelete
  46. FOX just skims the surface. Myers giggling and his awful hosting makes my skin crawl as a hardcore fan. So much of what was really going on today was missed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jerry, thanks for being our first troll today. How are things on the West Coast?

    ReplyDelete
  48. My goodness JD. I did not realize that you had such an opinion on Chris Myers. He does a great job on football and baseball. He is a authentic/career announce man for life. I do agree that they should use Krista more. She shines way above the others and they do not like it. Especially Ego Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love that low level jib cam. Hope they use it every time on the restarts!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anyone else having MRN cutting out on them ?? Or is it just the unfaithful KRKO-AM ??

    ReplyDelete
  51. SO nice to see the #43 back in STP red and Petty blue, even if it's only for one race.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Agree on what you said regarding Myers---thats not personality-just him being obnoxious...it's been getting worse-I listened to him on radio in LA over the past two years (same thing)-now that he is gone because of the tv gigs (time problems) he is not missed..

    ReplyDelete
  53. MRN is cutting out on Sirius as well....they must be having some sort of uplink problem.

    ReplyDelete
  54. No live coverage of the race on a Canadian network today due to hockey coverage. TSN will have the NHL playoff game at 3pm and TSN2 has Canada vs Sweden in the World Championships. Anyone with cable or is within range of a Fox affiliate can still see the race.

    ReplyDelete
  55. TV trucker,

He was on ESPN for years hosting a weekday talk show. He is on the Tennis network hosting great shows. He hosts "Inside NASCAR" for Showtime.

On Sundays, he makes a goofy idiot out of himself for money on FOX. This dual personality debate has been going on for years. It's an act that the TV crew jokes about.

Last year it got soo bad that Hammond kept calling him out on it.

When FOX revamps in the off-season it will be interesting to see if he returns.

    ReplyDelete
  56. They playing hockey today. I thought it might be too warm to keep the ice cold.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Looks like a decent crowd in the stands.

    ReplyDelete
  58. NO! Lap 2 is no place for in-car cameras!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh my...the wasted space in the infield, which is no longer available to spectators...The memories I have of being in there from 1973 to 1986 and cooking out during those L O N G 500 lap races..Oh for the good ol' days....and standing up on the outhouse roof to see the cars on the backstretch...

    ReplyDelete
  60. I hope they are paying Meyers lots of money to make himself look like such an idiot on national TV.

    ReplyDelete
  61. A bumper cam to 'show' a pass?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Remember yesterday how ESPN showed the corners and then widened out to keep the leaders in view but show the corners?

Not happening today with the NFL crew in the house.

    ReplyDelete
  63. At least they stayed with the Allmendinger/McMurray battle for awhile. Unusual.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Again, shots with only 1 or 2 cars.

    ReplyDelete
  65. My god, FOX, show the track! Zooming so far that we can only see the car is as useless as the in-car cameras!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Single car shots, jumping around, this is just horrible. I might be leaving today if things do not change. I have better things to do.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yes JD it is an act. I agree and truly respect where you are coming from. I was on that crew for a while. He runs the Hollywood Hotel. The dumb, "I don't know racing" act is to make Hammond look good as he gets intimidated easily. Which is not hard to do as Hammond's ego oversteps his abilities.
Myers is put in that position from the people in the chair.

    ReplyDelete
  68. you have to follow groups of cars on this track and watch them race for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  69. What was the point of following Shrub for 30 secs? It was like a qualifying lap-didn't show ONE other car. sad..

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm alreday losing interest in trying to watch a race where I have NO idea what is happening on the track! Showing one car at a time is no way to keep fans informed.

    ReplyDelete
  71. They showed good wide shots yesterday but they exposed the empty stands. Maybe today's close car shots is to hide the empty stands. Empty stands are expected with the JV race but a no no with the Varsity.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I thought last week you guys said that it was the same camera operators for ESPN and Fox. Why would they change what they do from one day to the other?

    ReplyDelete
  73. So I guess we only get 13 laps of racing in between commercials

    ReplyDelete
  74. I really liked racing broadcasts better when they had less cameras and shot wide from the roof most of the time. Less IS more.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's who calls the 'shots' in the truck that makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I have really grown to hate broadcasts from Dover. This place really creates some kind of wind noise or echo that drives me CRAZY lol

Mostly enjoying the conversation on here right now, welcome TVTrucker

Monitoring the usual 42 and 18

Pattie and 42 team coms are busy, 18 is pretty quiet

    ReplyDelete
  77. FOX is doing exactly what ESPN wasn't yesterday - playing follow the leader.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Oooooo, praise be to the Comapny Car (48)....he is in the lead...let us pay homage to the genius of the crew chief, and the prowess of its driver....(and to nascar for overlooking the TRACTION CONTROL that has to be on that car)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Rob, the BIG change is Barry Landis. A TV legend in his own mind. He took over from being an assistant when Neal left for ESPN. Neal made his deal with ESPN while with Fox mid-season in 2006 and was asked to leave at that point. That is why some of you prefer ESPN. It has the old look and approach you enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  80. OK - sorry I can't stay - MRN is on I refuse to be upset with 1 car, bumper,in car cams at Dover. Right now the camera shot selection is so bad I can't tell what track it is or isn't. Fox is off. Have a great day - may your hockey & or Basketball or race team win.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Sauter off, Nemecheck and Blaney pulling off

    ReplyDelete
  82. Looks like a lot of empty seats at one end of the track. Missed the pre-race show but so far, it looks like closeups instead of better views.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You know it's bad when we are all thinking that the radio and doing something we like is a better choice than NASCAR on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Johnny Sauter must have parked

    ReplyDelete
  85. So the booth is excited and talkative when Jimmie Johnson is the only thing on the screen. But when we get to actual side-by-side racing? They become dispassionate and disinterested, and cut to a pit reporter halfway through a pass. And then to commercial.

If it were either the booth OR the camera work being bad, I could deal. But the combination of both is nigh unwatchable.

    Is MRN working yet?

    ReplyDelete
  86. @David- We had a sound guy on here a couple of years ago that said all of their ideas about sound at a track had to be basically thrown out with the transformation to HD. He said it would take years to get it right.

    ReplyDelete
  87. This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.

    ReplyDelete
  88. MRN also has that whistling sound....must be because they're basically racing in a bowl but at a higher speed than a track like Bristol, which is also in a bowl. The sound of the engines seems to be bouncing off the grandstands back and forth.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I actually don't mind the occasional camera in the front of the car. It gives me an idea of the speed that the cars are traveling. I don't really get that from the higher camera shots unless they put those popups in. (remember VH-1 Pop-Up video when they had the facts about the music video?)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Remember how for the trucks and NW that the directors kept the corner in view and then followed the cars down the stretch by widening out?

Look at this coverage. Tailpipes and tight shots.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yeah bevo I remember, it just STILL annoys the snot out of me!

    ReplyDelete
  92. One TDP'er on Twitter just said it's like watching the race through a telescope.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Montoya complaining tight, losing right front, Kyle complaining no rear grip. Would be a good time to start getting some pit reports

    ReplyDelete
  94. Watching thru a telescope...perfect description of this 'coverage'.
    !!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Kylie, find another blog. You are done here. Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  96. For the first time in 9 yrs, I've turned off the race. My guy is sucking, I have something on tape I want to watch, even turned off the radio. Done until near the end of the race.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Sam gets the call as Krista finishes her Gordon report. =(

    Yeley on pit road.

Kyle asking to get grille cleaned very well, says there are alot of marbles on the apron

    ReplyDelete
  98. Pammmmm, I might be right behind you. Awesome day in South Florida and I am thinking about going to the beach. If the next restart does not lead to better coverage, I am calling it a day.

Have had it with this insult to the sport.

    ReplyDelete
  99. 88 and 42 hit on pit road. Juan says fender is caved

    ReplyDelete
  100. and as NO surprise....Hornish tests the wall....just in time for scheduled pit stops for the leaders...

    ReplyDelete
  101. A camera view that I think would work at Dover is to have one down in the Nationwide garage area which is turns 3 and 4.....and have it point upwards towards the track to give an idea how the track is banked and how fast the cars are going.....they could basically pan a group of cars going around those turns from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Thanks to Twitter & Daly Planet-can skip the 1st part of the race. LOTS of empty seats-Jeff Gluck's twitter pictures rule!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Pattie leaving JPM out, going to see what happens. Left front is killed, right front slightly damaged. Claimed 88 ran right into them, lets see if FOX catches it.

Target crew trying to sound optimistic by saying it'll help

    ReplyDelete
  104. 88 got hit on pit road, they'll show that for sure

    ReplyDelete
  105. This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Kylie, find another blog. You have worn out your welcome with your temper tantrums and profanity. Good luck to you and grow up.

    ReplyDelete
  107. cdh, so far nothing. Report is 88 ran into 42

    ReplyDelete
  108. Jeff Gluck is reporting that Conway's car simply quit on him; he's on pit roard. Wonder if FOX will take note?

    ReplyDelete
  109. David,

How many are out at the back of the pack? Is Labonte out?

    ReplyDelete
  110. 46, 66, 55, 87, and 09 are all off. Bobby Labonte just got back on the lead lap

    ReplyDelete
  111. I have been printing out an outdoor picture and sort of watching the race.

To think that last year the camera work wasn't to bad on Fox.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yeley is actually back out now, Sorry. conway and Hornish are the others off the track

    ReplyDelete
  113. Nevermind, 87 on track again, 71 off track so it does appear TRG is S&p-ing today

    ReplyDelete
  114. Talking about the shifter still, never reset pit road nor the accident that occured

    ReplyDelete
  115. To hear Mike Joy just going through the motions is painful.

    ReplyDelete
  116. According to @thedalyplanet, they're not showing much of the race on TV, so leaders are Kyle, JJ (-1.5 sec), Bowyer (-1.9), Dinger (-2.3).

    ReplyDelete
  117. Explaining the shifter? Do they really think fans are so ignorant we have no idea each car has a shifter, and what it does? OY!

    ReplyDelete
  118. The horrible camera work would not be as obvious if we had not just watched much better work this weekend at the same track by others.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Four separate in-car views of shifters during green-flag racing. What?

    Not much left to say.

    ReplyDelete
  120. If you guys saw the comments I am getting on the Twitter private channel (DM's) from folks at the track...oh Lordy. It is ugly in the TV truck.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Barry Landis produces TNT's coverage too.

    ReplyDelete
  122. JD and PammH,
I think that you are not being very supportive to this Blog or much less our sport by threatening to leave for reasons of a shoddy broadcast. It is still better than the days when all we had was radio.
But- What beach are you going to anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  123. LOL I love how crew chiefs lie to their drivers. Pattie told Juan before they went green the fender being damaged would help, now Juan is unhappy with the car and Pattie says the fender just might be out enough to hurt them. Gotta love how they motivate drivers!

    ReplyDelete
  124. JD, you mean the folks at the track are seeing a better race than we are seeing on tv?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Man I hope A.J. wins this!

    ReplyDelete
  126. They have 3 cars under a blanket for the lead and they are showing an in car and tight shot?!

    Why?

Landis may produce TNT's stuff but TNT hits it out of the park right now IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Think I'll take off and catch the rest of the race on Sirius. Yall have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  128. @Trucker...since many of us leave the TV coverage (or mute it) to listen to the radio rather than try to watch the unwatchable, TV coverage is only better if it shows more than radio can tell you about. TV is covering about 10 cars.

    ReplyDelete
  129. A.J. has gotten the call from NASCAR.
It is all in the BIG plan to build fans back.

    ReplyDelete
  130. 87 off again.

Yeley the last guy running in suspected start and park land.

Repeat, Bobby Labonte is OFF track

    ReplyDelete
  131. And barely a word from TV about cars in the garage.

    ReplyDelete
  132. TVtrucker,

I disagree. This is the fourth season of FOX in this new TV contract and the tenth season of this sport on FOX.

Any fan would turn this off and listen to the radio. There is nothing to see on TV except shots of cars. It's like practice.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Kyle Busch reporting he can NOT hear the team and has not been able to hear them. Wanted crew to stand on wall. I see FOX just caught it too.

    ReplyDelete
  134. T.V. contract calls for a full field to race. That is why you have start and parks. It's all one big cluster blunk!

    ReplyDelete
  135. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Anon 1:53PM,

It's all about the director, the coor prod and the exec prod.

Turner has a competely diffent way of doing this sport and Mike Wells directing.

    This. Is. Horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  137. @TVTrucker - Are you saying it's fixed? If this sport were really rigged, Junior would have three or four championships by now and be winning every month.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Kyle Busch stating that if the crew wants him to stop, have NASCAR black flag him

    ReplyDelete
  139. Like watching practice. No racing going on with the way they are showing this race. You see a car go in the pits in one of the quick shots and they say nothing about it.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I think he was a little sarcastic in the A.J. got the call remark.

I really wish I could see this mythical TV contract....so many people reporting so many different things what it says

    ReplyDelete
  141. Thank god for Twitter adding some life to this race: @JoeGibbsRacing:
Kyle's spotter Jeff said jokingly - well I'm gonna go get some ice cream then.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Andrew, they have done everything possible for Jr but he seems to make a blunder every week that prevents him from winning.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Kyle Busch has his spotter but no one else

    ReplyDelete
  144. JD, OK, but what are we supposed to watch but racecars? LOL
Yep it sucks, I cannot take it either.
I was just trying to be positive. It keeps getting worst every week.

Let's both go to the beach. I live in North Myrtle Beach now. Nice day in Cherry grove. How about your beach?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Team communications for the 18 are fixed.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I wonder why they don't use reports from the pit reporters during the race break.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Is the race over yet. Do your GWC and be done with this. It is nice outside.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Hutchinson Island, East Coast of South Florida. Go to the top of Lake O on the map, then straight over to the Atlantic.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Well Dr, Lynne likes the camera work.
drlynnechiro Loving the in-car camera and the bumper camera. Would love to see those also in the road courses with AJ.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Guys, I don't know if I can do three more hours of this. Know what I am saying?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Hornish back out 58 laps down

    Looks like the 87, 71, 09, 66, 55 and 36 are all out

  152. JD, I wonder how Brian Vickers is enjoying this coverage lol

    ReplyDelete
  153. Dinger says he is getting too tight.

  154. Here are the "getting the calls" in my memory.
Gordon winning the Million in Darlington.
Dale Sr. winning the Daytona 500 during the 50th anniversary with Bill Jr. on his radio.
Dale Jr. winning the July Daytona race after the tragedy.
    JJ wining 4 championships.
They can make you or break you in the garage.
    It happens all the time.

  155. David, his PR folks have been updating his Twitter account. Hope he gets better but that is going to take a long time.

Rare to have DVT and clots at his young age. Hope he finds out what the heck is going on.

  156. Oh no...Junyers car is junk....can another tirade be in the offing???

    ReplyDelete
  157. Apparently we need to be told that it's the cars causing the cameras to move. Ay-yi-yi.

    ReplyDelete
  158. have some old cucumber seeds i've been meaning to plant for years now. thank you. Fox, for giving me a reason to finally get them in the ground

    ReplyDelete
  159. sent an email to fox complaining about camera angles, in car and only showing one or two cars at a time, this was the response i recieved;
We appreciate your comments about our camera angels. While we are unable to change anything this season, we will make note and try to make adjustments to our coverage next season.

  160. TV, Petty winning his 200th?

I buy plate fixes, other tracks though I find it harder though a friend tells me someone at NASCAR sends exactly what they are and aren't going to check right to the 48 and 24 crew chiefs every week....

But I take that source with a grain of salt.

This is just an ugly day and it really sounds like once in awhile Mike Joy tries to get it under control, but can't then gives up

  161. Energy drinks are known to cause blood clots, makes your blood like syrup. Perhaps that is old news but...bad situation. Hope he recovers.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Sounds like a poor PR guy who has no answers.

    ReplyDelete
  163. JD, that's a nice place and a real beach compared to where I am stuck now. I am a former Floridian and will be back again. My fave place is Singer Island, Sailfish Marina.
Now I am wanting to leave too. They convinced me.

    ReplyDelete
  164. When did they change the push limit from 3 to 5 stalls?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Dinger's pit crew screwed up and he lost 5 seconds. Will we hear about this on FOX? Bet not.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Maybe Espn could lend them some "camera angels".

    ReplyDelete
  167. @TV - How about Atlanta '93, both the end of the race and then Rusty & Dale's tribute to Allison and Kulwicki?

    ReplyDelete
  168. FOX could use the Vickers situation for an episode of House (which is a show I love by the way)

But thanks for the update JD, I know Johnson and some others are pretty concerned since there are so many questions surrounding his condition. Glad Brian is in good spirits though

    ReplyDelete
  169. If you all have noticed, it has never been the same since they booted Artie to the backseat.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Guys, don't look now but JoLo is 4th

    ReplyDelete
  171. Do the "singing" NAPA commercials make anyone else want to avoid NAPA?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Never thought I'd hear Larry Mac say the wrong thing for a rule. He must be having a bad day also. Got his 3's and 5's mixed up huh?

    ReplyDelete
  173. Some big names have gone a lap down....I'm surprised we haven't seen a mystery debris.

    ReplyDelete
  174. @Glenn:
    "1...2...5!"
    "3, sir!"
    "3!"

    ReplyDelete
  175. Sign of bad NASCAR t.v. coverage: they show the top five going to commercial and three of the drivers you haven't heard mentioned in the prior 15 minutes

    ReplyDelete
  176. Conway hit the fence, may get a debris yellow soon

    ReplyDelete
  177. @Mike - The pileup in yesterday's NW race might be giving NASCAR some worry about calling a debris caution unless it's truly necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  178. You know there is a problem when radio gives you a better "picture" of the race than live TV.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Mike C if it was one of the Hendrick cars going a lap down, then Nascar would probably find debris to call a yellow. Those sound effects are really stupid too.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Nascar has never worried about causing a big pileup before. In fact, that's how they promo most of their races.

    ReplyDelete
  181. So much for AJ getting the call...

    ReplyDelete
  182. MAN, Dinger has absolutely no luck.

    ReplyDelete
  183. an old tire changer used to tell me, you only need 3 lugs tight on these wheels....if he ever wanted to hurry his stops, he would only hit 3 of them. Of course there were fewer officials back then

    ReplyDelete
  184. Here are my opinions of the top race announcer currently in the business. (in no particular order)
    Brad Daugherty
    Mike Joy
    Steve Byrnes
    Krista Vota
    Bob Dillner
    Adam Alexander
    Rick Allen
    Ralph Sheheen
    John Roberts
Chad Knaus (OK, but he is race smart)

    ReplyDelete
  185. David@2:30....that is true about 3 lugs holding the wheel sufficiently in the OLD days of bias ply tires but now with radial tires and the added bite, that won't suffice...believe me, I know...used to be a tire changer until 2000...3 lugs won't do now...

"Debris or not debris?" "That is the question."

    ReplyDelete
  187. Hooray, a graphic that takes up half the screen, specifically, the half with the racing!

    Just what I always wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  188. ok, so i came to the broadcast exactly 60 minutes ago and watched without twitter or TDP thru an entire hour. haven't read comments/tweets yet and here's my take:

    i'm outta here.

what a major disaster. i love this track, it's my home track, this is the first race i've missed there in several years. and watching this broadcast is making me heartsick. i hate that folks will come away form this thinking that the problem is this track and not the tv crew.

so, i'm turning it all off in a bit and finding another way to pass the time i'd normally be spending at dover.

just so discouraged and, again, heartsick.

  189. The number of people in this chat has dwindled to almost nothing.

What a shame. Fans have voted on this coverage by leaving.

    ReplyDelete
  190. JD, but please don't turn the lights out!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  191. red,

I already closed Twitter and am about to close this chat. Nothing could describe what FOX is doing to this sport today. Nothing.
