This is always a highlight of the CWTS season. The tiny confines of O'Reilly Raceway Park reminds us all of the truck series roots.
Krista Voda starts the coverage with The Setup at 7:30PM. Rick Allen, Michael Waltrip and Phil Parsons will call the action at 8PM. Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander are on pit road.
The racing is always good with a flat track that makes it tough to pass. The trucks have been delivering the best racing of all three of NASCAR's national touring series this season and ORP should continue that tonight.

On Trackside DW was acting crazy again like he did when DP was on. And the wind was so much it distracted me from listening so I had to finally change the channel. Glad the trolls are gone!

@JD - Except for the Richmond Nationwide race driving for Brian Keselowski, Johnny Chapman has driven nothing but S&P rides for the last 4 years. Even promising young drivers like Coleman Pressley and Landon Cassill are forced to do it just to stay on the minds of potential car owners.

10 laps and 5.5 minutes of green flag racing lost while Speed shows one set of commercials, a Camping World plug and then back to commercials. Now, we're under caution, but didn't get to see any pit stops...

My bad, this is a bad FOX race with TNT commercial levels and ESPN timed replays. Combine the flaws of each network and this is the result.
ReplyDeleteWe just got 15 green flag laps. at about 24 secs per lap, that's 6 minutes (30 sec/lap would be 7 1/2 min.) How long will the commercial break be? at least 4? despicable ratio.

There'll be about 30 laps left when this set of commercials ends, and I'll bet there'll be another set of commercials with about 18 to 20 laps to go.

ReplyDeleteThis coverage was off from the beginning. The "spotlight the driver" segment was clearly being read, sounded like the first time they had seen it. They acted all race like they had some stranger yelling in their ears.

Did David Hill change the behind-the-scene crew at SPEED??? That man could mess up a bowl of vanilla ice cream!
Well, FOX has come to the SPEED truck coverage: Rick Allen has been pushed aside like Mike Joy, there is a Waltrip who never shuts up, many tight camera shots, frequently missed action.......

ReplyDeleteAnother lesson learned from TNT. We finish early. Let's put on something we've already produced and get out of Dodge. Could've done more interviews, but why bother? We've already disappointed our core audience, so why give them any more.

as the sanctioning body you should have some say in how the broadcasts are shown.

JD...I was at the race-it is on DVR, so I have not watched....but I was suprised of the LACK of cameras. Sitting in turns 3-4..only 1 camera inside of the entry of turn 3....suprised no one was with the MRN on the outside of 3. Lack of $$$$$?

ReplyDeleteI am on the west coast and got home late, so I watched the late replay on SPEED after having read some of the complaints on Twitter.
I have watched dozens of races from IRP/ORP mostly back when ESPN ran Thursday & Saturday Night Thunder - midget racing. (Also watched some of the old BUSCH series races here too. )They had me on the edge of my seat watching Mel Kenyon, Sammy Swindell, Bobby East, Dave Blaney, Rich Vogler (RIP) and so many others lap by lap with mostly ONE CAMERA on the top of the grandstand. It was like being there and having the best seat in the house.
I watched a bunch of laps tonite and saw so many jump-cuts that it made me dizzy. On a sequence of several laps no shot lasted 5 full seconds. It's like watching a music video without the entertain-ment. It's so disorienting to be watching a shot from 3/4 rear for 3seconds until they enter a turn, then switch to a 3/4 front shot from middle of the turn until halfway down the straight (maybe 3-4 seconds) then switch to a head-on shot until they enter the next turn. On top of it, the back straight camera is on the INSIDE of the track, while the front stretch cam is on the outside, so you have the in/out camera perspective switching back & forth 2-3 times a lap and the front/rear perspective changing 3-4 times! This has always bugged me even on longer tracks, but at least there you have one shot on screen for longer than 5 seconds. On top of it all, once the leaders reach lapped cars, it muddles the viewer's appreciation of who is actually leading.
It's the Hollywood obsession with tight shots, as though the simple fact of a single race car on the screen should be enough to excite us. What the bozos with no clown makeup (in the video truck) can't get thru their heads is that race cars don't mean anything without context, and the only way we get context is to have a wide view of the track for long enough to grasp the entirety of the situation. Then, the chatter of the booth team could actually flesh out the back story. As it stands now, they are frequently describing for us things we HAVEN'T SEEN because of the atrocious direction.
I'm fed up with this garbage, and if it continues, the only NASCAR events that excited me every week without fail will be history as far as I'm concerned.
Man I miss the Carquest Cage Cam;-)

4)AWESOME slide job by Ron Hornaday brought me back to IRP in the 90s! that used to be an every-lap occurrence here.
I watched the replay of the race this morning and the commercials weren't nearly as irritating as last night and didn't seem to be as many. And Anon at 12:38 AM - was the anthem singer as bad in person as she sounded on tv?
