Live Blogging Camping World Trucks At ORP (SPEED - 7:30PM ET)
This is always a highlight of the CWTS season. The tiny confines of O'Reilly Raceway Park reminds us all of the truck series roots.
Krista Voda starts the coverage with The Setup at 7:30PM. Rick Allen, Michael Waltrip and Phil Parsons will call the action at 8PM. Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander are on pit road.
The racing is always good with a flat track that makes it tough to pass. The trucks have been delivering the best racing of all three of NASCAR's national touring series this season and ORP should continue that tonight.
This post will serve to host your comments on the SPEED coverage of the CWTS. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by!
Hey folks, sorry for the problems earlier in the day. Takes all kinds to make a world.
ReplyDeleteTruck series time!
What a wild blog that was earlier!
ReplyDeleteWatching Nascar Now (from 6:30) on DVR. All 4 on the panel seem very amped up as the show started.
Switching over to the truck race now.
Just a troubled guy who has been harrassing me for a very long time. Must have a tough life.
ReplyDeleteImagine taking the time to pretend to be me in a NASCAR TV blog.
Get a life!
On Trackside DW was acting crazy again like he did when DP was on. And the wind was so much it distracted me from listening so I had to finally change the channel. Glad the trolls are gone!
ReplyDeletehey jd? don't shoot the messenger but there's still one hanging from 3:03 in the previous blog.
ReplyDeletecan't join you folks for truck race tonight but will be following via TDP and twitter so post away!
Thanks Vicky, sorry for the problems.
ReplyDeleteThanks red! Just could not get to my phone for a couple of hours! Oh well....
ReplyDeleteahhh, the life of a citizen blogger: all work and no pay!
ReplyDeletewe can't ever say it enough, jd: thanks for this place of sanity and humor on race weekends! such a refreshing change from other race sites and the vitriol that infects them! i know you put in a ton of hard work so we can have fun. so, thanks again!
Got the new Sprint EVO, so I am usually on top of it all the time.
ReplyDeleteJust got wrapped up in real life!
Another one o' them Nascar anthems. That's not a compliment.
ReplyDeleteOn a Friday night watching the truck race and I don't believe there is a leader board on-line for the trucks.
ReplyDeleteIs the cost to much to put up a leader board?
That was painful,... and I only listened to the first 5 words.
ReplyDeleteanthem sucked! oy vey-Eli Gold or MW on Speed-not a good choice for me either way...:(
ReplyDeleteMaybe it takes an occasional bad apple so we all really appreciate and are reminded of what you do every day for us who want to comment. We can disagree, but be civil.
ReplyDeleteThe singers chosen for the anthem should be able to sing!
S&P Predictions:
ReplyDelete#24 Mike Harmon
#39 Mike Garvey
#85 Brent Raymer
#87 Chris Joness
Yay Trucks and short track racin!
ReplyDeleteNow folks realize all you have to do and put up with during your blogs! Thanks for taking care of that. Bad anthem had to mute, I couldn't help it!!! Go David!! Hey the new movie "the Expendables" opens on my birthday.
ReplyDelete..forgot to add #21 Butch Miller to S&P list
ReplyDeleteWith such a small track there is no reason, none, to do tight camera shots.
ReplyDelete@Buschseries61 - I agree completely with your list. I would just add a maybe with #89 Chris Lafferty.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just me, but I feel bad for folks who have to do that.
ReplyDeleteMust be a miserable life!
Hope there are no more tire issues here tonight.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for people like that to.
ReplyDeleteJust think their big thing to show for what they did today was their deleted comments.
@JD - Except for the Richmond Nationwide race driving for Brian Keselowski, Johnny Chapman has driven nothing but S&P rides for the last 4 years. Even promising young drivers like Coleman Pressley and Landon Cassill are forced to do it just to stay on the minds of potential car owners.
ReplyDelete@JD - Oops! Thought you were talking about the S&P drivers.
ReplyDeleteThe camera can zoom out, right?
ReplyDeleteMikey,... had to say something about TireMonkey,... one of his team's sponsors.
ReplyDeleteThere goes Harmon to the garage to join Mike Garvey & a damaged Chris Jones.
ReplyDeleteMV - I was suprised how many laps Lafferty ran in practice, over 75. He is Laff-ably off the pace as usually tonight.
ReplyDeleteWhen you have tight shots at a short track you loose the flow of the race.
ReplyDeleteTailpipes, tight shots, this is NOT working for me tonight.
ReplyDelete+ At least Rick mentioned some S&P's tonight.
ReplyDelete- It seems like we have missed so much action in commercial and/or due to tight shots.
@Buschseries61 - Butch Miller is still running in the #21, that's a surprise. Must be ASI Limited's backyard, all three of his trucks have it as their primary sponsor.
ReplyDeleteMan, this is awful directing. When is the last time we said that about a truck race on SPEED?
ReplyDeleteMaybe never?
MV, must be. I'm as shocked as you are about the #21.
ReplyDeleteAnd there is another pass we missed under commercial.
JD check your bolgs from last year I think we might have had problems with this race last year too. If I am remembering right. Or maybe I'm just confusing it with the old ESPN NW racing debacles
ReplyDeleteAnybody else lead through the caution? I had a laptop crash, so I wasn't paying attention. I know Hornaday passed Peters prior to the caution (previous to this one with TireMonkey).
ReplyDeleteNot 1 good replay of the wreck at a track this small, really sad.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember that as well. This is not AT ALL the truck series presentation we remember.
ReplyDeleteTotally different, almost looks like FOX. All zoomed in, no overall perspective, random camera shots...horrible!
Choppy directing, shot here, then there, then over there.
ReplyDeleteIs it too much to ask for at least a Live Leaderboard for the trucks on NASCAR.com? It shouldn't require any babysitting, just a data stream. If they can do it for NW & Cup, why not?
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, family birthday party --sounds like I haven't missed much excitement (except maybe for the bad anthem AND trolls).
ReplyDeleteJD, thanks so much for running a tight ship.
Wow, are there a lot of commercials or what?
@Patrick, ahem brother.
ReplyDeleteOMG! SPEED has become FOX!
ReplyDeleteSo, we go away under green. Come back from commercials, under yellow, tell us what happened, but don't show us any pits, and go away again. Commercials. WTH?
ReplyDeleteThis is a bad FOX race with TNT commercial levels.
ReplyDelete"While we were away.." Just mailing it in tonight.
10 laps and 5.5 minutes of green flag racing lost while Speed shows one set of commercials, a Camping World plug and then back to commercials. Now, we're under caution, but didn't get to see any pit stops...
ReplyDeleteAll in all, we just missed from lap 112 to lap 125 and most of the last 8 minutes was commercials.

ReplyDeleteOMG! SPEED has become FOX!
cripes! this stinks.
JD, what do u expect, w/David Hill @ the helm?? :(
ReplyDelete@Martin Vincent
ReplyDeletethanks for summarizing what just happened.
to quote Charles Barkley, "this is turrbel"
My bad, this is a bad FOX race with TNT commercial levels and ESPN timed replays. Combine the flaws of each network and this is the result.
ReplyDeleteWe just got 15 green flag laps. at about 24 secs per lap, that's 6 minutes (30 sec/lap would be 7 1/2 min.) How long will the commercial break be? at least 4? despicable ratio.
ReplyDeleteI'm switching back & forth to ESPN classic watching the brickyard marathon. At least I will be until the 10 p.m. hr when it becomes the Johnson race and I won't bother to watch that one.
ReplyDeleteThink I have a little bit of sour grapes? LOL
Oh look! Missed the caution & pit stops. Replaying pit stops - 2009 ESPN memories.
ReplyDeleteSomeone at Speed has to be saying that tight shots are a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI am rarely speechless. I am now.
ReplyDelete-The #12 & #60 are still running?!?
ReplyDelete-Brad Sweet is almost in the top 5?!?
-Justin Lofton is back on the track?!?
-Brett Butler, JC Stout, Joe Aramendia are in the race?!?
you could go watch the 1995 brickyard 400 in the commecial breaks - that's more exciting and I KNOW who won!
ReplyDeleteThis is awful, its a Friday night and they are wondering why ratings continue to go down?
There'll be about 30 laps left when this set of commercials ends, and I'll bet there'll be another set of commercials with about 18 to 20 laps to go.
ReplyDeletewelp, Summer thinks the coverage is FINE, per Twitter. :(
ReplyDeleteThat text alerts plug was completely covering the aerial view of the track.
ReplyDeletegroan, not "if the race ended now". Its EVERYWHERE!
ReplyDeleteand we are back to commercial
Even worse than I thought, they showed 4 green flag laps and went back to commercials... So there'll be another set before we reach 15 laps to go.
ReplyDeleteBig Shocker, more commercials!!
ReplyDeleteSomeone (don't remember who) said at the beginning of the broadcast that they "would be painting a picture of the race".
ReplyDeleteThat was foretelling. Why can't they take the cameras they have and just shoot the race? That is all we want.
The boss at FOX Sports is running SPEED now, maybe they got the memo
ReplyDeleteAnon - they got the memo already -- make the racing as unwatchable as possible and flood with commercials.
ReplyDeleteYuck
Quite possibly the worst race coverage of the season. I'm aggravated and annoyed. Was just pathetic.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed with Rick's PXP he seemed to have stepped back and MW & PP were talking over each other tonight. This won't win any best broadcast of the year, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteThey can't get to another friggin' commercial fast enough. Not even one full run-through of the ticker. I don't know hardly anyone who didn't finish on the lead lap. Nice frosting to this crap cake.
ReplyDeleteWhat is there to say? That was awful from green to checkers.
ReplyDeleteSpeedTV gets the Bag O'Hammers Award for tonight's The Motorsports Variety Show.
ReplyDeleteThis coverage was off from the beginning. The "spotlight the driver" segment was clearly being read, sounded like the first time they had seen it. They acted all race like they had some stranger yelling in their ears.
ReplyDeleteCamera work was terrible and double the commercials. Really sad that the SPEED coverage was so bad tonight.
Did David Hill change the behind-the-scene crew at SPEED??? That man could mess up a bowl of vanilla ice cream!
Well, FOX has come to the SPEED truck coverage: Rick Allen has been pushed aside like Mike Joy, there is a Waltrip who never shuts up, many tight camera shots, frequently missed action.......
ReplyDeleteDavid Hill seems determined to ruin the Truck series, too.
Makiki
Honolulu
Seriously, I'm still stunned. I have no idea what happened in that race. None.
ReplyDeleteI think Lois's webcam here in Houston was better than any of the broadcase of this race! I'm hoping it'll be better next week.
ReplyDeleteAnother lesson learned from TNT. We finish early. Let's put on something we've already produced and get out of Dodge. Could've done more interviews, but why bother? We've already disappointed our core audience, so why give them any more.
ReplyDeletei sent this to both speed and nascar via email
ReplyDeleteway too many zoomed in camera shots, could have showed the camping world rv thing during a caution not during green flag racing, and scheduled to go till 1030, you could have interviewed more people, this is why the ratings are down, we the fans are getting tired of this and turning off the tv and finding other ways of getting our info
and this part just to nascar
as the sanctioning body you should have some say in how the broadcasts are shown.
does anyone from NASCAR ever watch any of the broadcasts to see how they are?
JD...I was at the race-it is on DVR, so I have not watched....but I was suprised of the LACK of cameras. Sitting in turns 3-4..only 1 camera inside of the entry of turn 3....suprised no one was with the MRN on the outside of 3. Lack of $$$$$?
ReplyDeleteSo if I tell you the 13 may have been one of the best trucks of the night -bad pit stop killed them...would you have known?
(I'm reposting because something weird happened the first time when I hit "Publish". Sorry if it's a dupe.)
ReplyDeleteI am on the west coast and got home late, so I watched the late replay on SPEED after having read some of the complaints on Twitter.
I have watched dozens of races from IRP/ORP mostly back when ESPN ran Thursday & Saturday Night Thunder - midget racing. (Also watched some of the old BUSCH series races here too. )They had me on the edge of my seat watching Mel Kenyon, Sammy Swindell, Bobby East, Dave Blaney, Rich Vogler (RIP) and so many others lap by lap with mostly ONE CAMERA on the top of the grandstand. It was like being there and having the best seat in the house.
I watched a bunch of laps tonite and saw so many jump-cuts that it made me dizzy. On a sequence of several laps no shot lasted 5 full seconds. It's like watching a music video without the entertain-ment. It's so disorienting to be watching a shot from 3/4 rear for 3seconds until they enter a turn, then switch to a 3/4 front shot from middle of the turn until halfway down the straight (maybe 3-4 seconds) then switch to a head-on shot until they enter the next turn. On top of it, the back straight camera is on the INSIDE of the track, while the front stretch cam is on the outside, so you have the in/out camera perspective switching back & forth 2-3 times a lap and the front/rear perspective changing 3-4 times! This has always bugged me even on longer tracks, but at least there you have one shot on screen for longer than 5 seconds. On top of it all, once the leaders reach lapped cars, it muddles the viewer's appreciation of who is actually leading.
It's the Hollywood obsession with tight shots, as though the simple fact of a single race car on the screen should be enough to excite us. What the bozos with no clown makeup (in the video truck) can't get thru their heads is that race cars don't mean anything without context, and the only way we get context is to have a wide view of the track for long enough to grasp the entirety of the situation. Then, the chatter of the booth team could actually flesh out the back story. As it stands now, they are frequently describing for us things we HAVEN'T SEEN because of the atrocious direction.
I'm fed up with this garbage, and if it continues, the only NASCAR events that excited me every week without fail will be history as far as I'm concerned.
Man I miss the Carquest Cage Cam;-)
On a POSITIVE note:
ReplyDelete1) Good idea to have split screen with leaders on left and battles for position on right.
2) Great job by Narain to salvage his earlier wreck for 20th.
3) Nice showing by the ladies, especially Johanna Long with a top 20!
4)AWESOME slide job by Ron Hornaday brought me back to IRP in the 90s! that used to be an every-lap occurrence here.
I watched the replay of the race this morning and the commercials weren't nearly as irritating as last night and didn't seem to be as many. And Anon at 12:38 AM - was the anthem singer as bad in person as she sounded on tv?
