Live Blogging Friday At Watkins Glen (SPEED And ESPN2)

SPEED kicks off the day with Sprint Cup Series practice coverage from Watkins Glen at noon ET. Steve Byrnes, Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds are in the TV booth. Bob Dillner and Wendy Venturini are the reporters.

ESPN2 picks-up the action with Nationwide Series practice at 2PM ET. Marty Reid, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree are in the booth. This trio sticks around for the 4PM Sprint Cup Series final practice as well. Nicole Briscoe then hosts NASCAR Now at 5:30PM from ESPN's Bristol, CT headquarters.

The TV coverage wraps-up with Trackside on SPEED at 7PM. Elliott Sadler is back on the show with host Steve Byrnes, Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond. It should be interesting to see what Sadler has to say about his rough ride last week in Pocono.

This is always a good opportunity to see the differences in coverage approach between SPEED and ESPN. SPEED is much more focused on chasing the stories of the moment while ESPN has a lot of pre-produced features and interviews all set before the coverage starts.

  1. Happy Friday, everyone!

Got home in time to watch some of the Friday activity. Wouldn't you know that one of the first things I see on my TV is Boris Said's feet!

Since Mr. Said is locked into this race, I wonder which series regular he will take out this time. :)

Guess I'll just watch Tag-her Woods
    show his whiney self.

  4. Just a thought after all the recent discussions about phantom cautions --- how often do you see cautions of this sort during practice or qualifying? I honestly do not know. Never thought of it before. Guess I'll watch today and the next time at an oval.

Just a random thought on a Friday afternoon...

  6. Not a very exciting NASCAR TV day, but at least the weather was good at the Glen.

  7. JD, do you think Nascar tells the young NW drivers to say it's great to race against the cup drivers? It seems like they all are saying the same thing when they are on one of the race shows, I really don't buy it! Hope I don't get fined by Nascar for writing that!!! Just saw young Trevor Bayne and he just said it on Trackside. Boy, he sure can talk!

  8. Just my opinion:
I believe that most of the younger NW drivers want to move up to the Cup series. The best way to catch the eye of a Cup owner is to race door-to-door with Cup drivers.

If the NW drivers cannot race with the Cup drivers in their own series, I don’t think they have much chance to move up to the higher series.

So, if a NW driver wants to prove themselves, they shouldn’t mind the Cup drivers giving them that chance. :)
