This is going to be a very interesting night in many different ways. The night race from Bristol is on ABC across the nation, but some key ABC local stations have opted to carry preseason NFL football.
Here is the list and the available options for viewers in those markets via ESPN:
The following markets will have alternate viewing options for ABC’s telecast of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol tonight (DT2 = Digital Tier 2):
Detroit (WXYZ) – will show 7:30 – 9 p.m. on its DT2 channel then switch to primary channel at 9 p.m. due to coverage of annual Woodward Dream Cruise
Houston (KTRK) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Houston Texans preseason game.
Richmond, VA (WRIC) – will show entire race on WUPV-TV (CW station in market) due to coverage of Washington Redskins preseason game.
Weslaco, TX (KRGV) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Dallas Cowboys preseason game.
Madison, WI (WKOW) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Green bay Packers preseason game.
LaCrosse, WI (WXOW) – will show entire game on its DT2 channel and in-market on CW station due to coverage of Green Bay Packers preseason game.
Wausau, WI (WAOW) -- will show entire game on its DT2 channel and in-market on CW station due to coverage of Green Bay Packers preseason game.
NOTE: Joplin, MO (KODE) and St. Joseph, MO (KQTV) are both showing Kansas City Chiefs preseason games. Neither station has DT2 channel and due to limited alternate clearance options in the markets, race will not air in either market.
The NASCAR Countdown show will be hosted by Nicole Briscoe for thirty minutes at 7PM ET. Briscoe is filling-in for Allen Bestwick, who is attending to some family issues. Our best to Allen and his family.
Ray Evernham, Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace will join Briscoe in the Infield Studio. Actually, both the pit studio and Tim Brewer's Tech Garage are located outside of the track this weekend due to the small size of the BMS infield.
Briscoe has filled this role before with no problems, but Bristol offers an entirely new challenge of directing high-speed traffic and offering recaps and highlights during the race. She is in for a long night.
Marty Reid gets his first turn as the play-by-play announcer for this race. He is joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the broadcast booth. These three called the Nationwide Series race on Saturday and learned some valuable lessons about sticking to the action on the track. There is no time for other discussions.
The director faces the biggest challenge of continually cutting cameras all night long as the 15 second laps tick off. BMS bit ESPN Saturday night several times when the director tried to use the in-car cameras live. Other action happened in a split second and it was over before the cameras even found it.
Tonight will hopefully feature the aerial shot, the high cameras on top of the race control tower and the low angle "speed shots" that let the cars zoom right by the camera within inches. Bristol can make great TV if you let it.

I have been to the night race twice and the march race once. Its like nothing I have ever experienced at a racetrack. Bring your earplugs!

I went to the night race without earplugs and couldn't hear for three days.
On my end ...Raceday just cut off...almost in mid sentence. Weird.
Have to use sign language on pit road for the TV crew. Lots of pointing going on...
A few quick comments on the various pre-emptions tonight, from the perspective of a manager at a local television station.
As was said in the other thread, the preseason games are a gold mine for not only the teams, but the local stations that air them. While a local station receives an average of only a few local spots (commercials) per hour during a network broadcast (the race) they can sell the entirety of a local NFL team's game during the preseason.
That's a lot of money.
While television stations still do very well in the revenue department, expenditures have never been higher. Remember, every broadcast station in the United States was REQUIRED in the past decade by the federal government to upgrade their broadcast equipment from analog to digital. This transition cost our station tens of millions of dollars. In fact, we ended up LOSING money the year of our changeover.
So lets talk about money and ratings:
In our market - a top 50 market in the southeast - a primetime NASCAR race will typically receive a 3 rating or less, and finish in last place across its time slots. From a financial perspective, it makes sense to pre-empt a NASCAR race, in whole or part, to air a football game. Even if the game rates lower than the race, it will make my station more money.
(As an aside, if the race is on a sub-channel in your market, but you can't receive it because the signal is weak...blame the government. The entire digital transition is a disaster. In some markets, the station with the most powerful signal by wattage is also the hardest to pick up over rabbit ears. True story.)
Ultimately, the NFL is here to stay. NASCAR as well, but it is more of a niche sport. There's a reason why it is on cable and not broadcast. That reason is ratings and money.
I love NASCAR, and wish it nothing but the best. But the economics of the situation is that these station can afford to pre-empt the race, and in some cases, may not be able to afford not to.
It's dangerous without earplugs.
so if you are on of the unlucky who can't get Bristol because of the preseason football--go over to Justin TV...we plugged our computer into our tv with the hdmi(i think that's what it's called) and now we can watch...

I never needed earplugs at Bristol...sounded too cool without them. Could have used them at Martinsville though. Sitting under the upper deck stands the sound really echoed.

My parents live in LaCrosse. Some night to have our local affiliate upstage NASCAR over football. Their CW isn't in HD either. I don't know why ABC would let their local affiliates get away with changing the station of one of the biggest races of the year.
What does everyone think of how Dale Jr ran last night w Eury SR POPS on the box? I know he was lap down at one point but man did he come back for a great finish.... I think Eury SR is the answer to Dale Jr's BIG time slump!!! I still always wonder why they messed that team up in 2005

ABC really doesn't have a say in the matter.
Stations can preempt network programming when the licensee thinks there is some other programming which is of greater national or local importance.
The station would argue the local or nearby football team's game is of more importance than 1 of 36 NASCAR races.
As long as they don't do it often, the network can't win that argument with the affiliate. And, there aren't many stations floating around without affiliation, so it's not like ABC is going to go elsewhere.
The noise wasn't so bad at Bristol until they put the stands completely around the track and raised them. I went to a couple of truck and Busch (at the time) races before they added the seats and the noise wasn't so bad. Maybe it was where I was seated at the night race.
OK guys, told the NASCAR.com stuff should be working. You may have to restart!
only network stations that cannot pre-empt programming are network owned stations and they can do it for local news and weather and such.
O&O are NY, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toledo, Flint, Fresno, Houston and Raleigh Durham - last one interesting to NASCAR.

ESPN/ABC just spent the first 20 minutes talking about drivers wrecking/fighting other drivers. The excitement in the booth was building. It ended with near nirvana at the thought of more wrecks and fistfights tonight. I suppose that's the theme for tonight.
Why did ABC silence BK saying a$$ during driver intros, but didn't silence him saying a$$ in a soundbite from last night earlier in the broadcast?

Every time I read about a track adding 'enhancements' like fan zones and other stuff to attract fans, I look at Bristol. No big citiy near it, no casino, just a little bull ring in the mountains that has (had) great races. Seems to me the best way to get fans to come is to have great racing. All the casinos and fans zones in the world won't change that.

They didn't sell out but it looks like they came close. On the news last night, they were talking to some people reselling tickets outside. They were selling them at below face value rather than at a premium like it was done in the past. The seller said he bought them "right" and might make money on them but somebody had lost money.
This is my first race actually AT Bristol. Thru a combination of wheedling and honest graft with friends who have access to skyboxes I got to be here. And I have been to that really neat outdoor bar. I am there now. The view is simply awesome and they have just started engines. So, I suggest ESPN add a "Bristol outdoor bar-view cam". I have not seen the race from here yet, but if there is a better view in NASCAR so far I cannot imagine where it must be.

Jeff, your friend was probably right, but I don't think it will ever happen. And til it does, I only stand for the one. At Richmond people were standing for God Bless America, and I do think it lessens the real anthem.
BTW, the flag code (so far as I know) still says only men have to take off their hats. I'm guessing that harkens to the days when women were using hatpins and that would have been quite a task. But I don't really know.

i have some sympathy for not being able to keep the ticker current. with 17 second laps, it just changes so freaking fast that we'd be complaining that the thing is jumping so much it's useless.
i keep a leaderboard loaded for lap times and lap down, etc. other than that, it's just a crap shoot.

ESPN's digital image signal quality of tonights broadcast is excellent. Seems especially clear, unusually so even. Good work. Good pictures.

hey, ummm no I'm not enjoying the prn coverage on Hotpass!! It's terrible, doesn't follow what they are showing on the broadcast and goes completely silent for long periods of time. My husband is about to have a coronary!!!

What I don't get is this. Every other televised sport is pretty consistent week to week as far as direction/technical aspects go. Complaints of viewers centers around announcers or maybe the occasional missed replay. You don't all of a sudden use a camera down the third base line for the main play by play camera or a camera on the bench in ice hockey for primary coverage as an example.
Why is this basic concept lost when it comes to NASCAR?
Junior is coming forward for a change! Hope I didn't just jinx him.
I was loving the wide shot, then the camera zoomed in and Marty Reid brought up points.
Is Brewer ever neccessart?
Tonight's coverage reminds me of the last time I was there. I think I missed every wreck in the race. It is so fast with action all around the track, you don't know where to look and I was looking at the wrong place every time.
Watching this crappy coverage is more painful than what my dental surgery will be on Monday, and that won't be fun at all.
I don't know how much more of this I'm going to watch.

All they have to do is zoom out. That's all they have to do.

This is way to painful to watch all night. NFL game I want to see is gonna be on in a few - I'll be switching back & forth. Any idiot ( self included) could do a much better job with this "race coverage" wide shots guys. Forget points, just follow the dang race on the track as it happens.

@JoJaye--I absolutely don't get it. Many of the button pushers have worked for other networks doing NASCAR I'm sure a few of them worked back when BSPN had it in the 80s/90s. But they keep acting like they've never done this before and have no idea how to do it. Then the next week they figure it out and then back to them being clueless :(. I watch to relax not get frustrated :(

I swear if I wasn't on twitter, I wouldn't know half of what was going on in the races. That's a sad commentary, imo.
