Live Blogging Nationwide Series From Talladega (ESPN2 - 2PM ET)

This week it's Rusty Wallace on vacation. Allen Bestwick will host the infield pit studio with Dale Jarrett and Brad Daugherty alongside. Jarrett will then move to the TV booth and work the race with Marty Reid and Andy Petree. Pit reporters are Dr. Jerry Punch, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch.

ESPN has added Hendrick crew chief Chad Knaus as an in-studio analyst for this telecast. The network is searching for something that can add an element of interest for viewers since the series once again this season is dominated by Cup drivers.

Talladega is still recovering from some severe weather yesterday that shook up a lot of folks. The Friday ARCA race was run at 9AM and Sprint Cup Series qualifying is just finishing up.

Racing in the Nationwide Series should not feature the kind of total two-by-two drafting we have seen in the Sprint Cup Series. The bumpers on the Nationwide Series cars do not line up for bump drafting.

ESPN continues to use the Sprint Cup Series cross-over drivers almost exclusively for interviews and information. Despite NASCAR's attempt to develop the credibility of some Nationwide Series regulars, ESPN simply wants the big names on TV.

Talladega is a huge track and TV has plenty of options in covering the actual racing. In big packs, in-car cameras are effective but only for a short time as the overall perspective is lost. Low angle speed shots work to establish the intensity, while aerial shots are great at the runs down the backstretch with cars jockeying for positions.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Nationwide Series race from Talladega on ESPN2. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by.

Do they not have a replay of the front cars just after the yellow came out so we could see how close the finish was.

Congratulations to another Cup superteam winning yet another Nationwide race.

Well, that was just totally weird. Still don't know how to feel about it.

Im all for racing back to the finish. No more freezing the field.

Guess Joew and Extenz kissed and made up, eh?

Charlie said...

I agree - weird.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, have fun my friends. Should be even weirder tomorrow!

See you then.

I always knew that Extenz as a sponsor was a bad idea. Joe would have been better off with Viagra as his sponsor.

Nemechek & Johnny Davis showed the heart of this series. Really wish we heard from Mike Wallace.

Welp another KBshow. Just glad Mike is OK! Still remember how scared I was when Elliott flipped there in 2K3.

ESPN didn't even interview Mike Wallace!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't bother to watch tomorrow. I will DVR the race just in case there is anything controversal to review, but if it is the same kind of "racing" I can fast forward past everything.

kudos to ESPN ...interviews w/Mike Wallace's crew chief, long-time racer Johnny Davis and Joe Nemachek ...obviously needing to kill time (lol), they let 'em talk and not cut 'em off ...remember this post-race, better than most this season ...sounded like fans were ready to see Nemachek making a run for the win ...oh well, the 'old guys' acquitted themselves well

Great action...very impressed that Rusty wasn't on camera this week. I miss Dale Jarret when he's gone. Really impressed with Joe N...Nascar needs to redirect some sponsorship to the cars so that people like Joe N, can run like this week in and week out and aren't force to start and park. Really couldn't complain about the cameras or the angles....was very exciting. The finish-even with K.Busch winning-was very interesting.

Didn't plan to watch another NNS race until a non-cupper had a chance, but accidentally saw enough to remain disgusted with NNS and remain disgusted with all that love-buggering.

(I'd trademark that term, but I'd rather grant the right to use it to all the Planeteers)

"Walter, just one poor guy. Can't contribute, so he must disrupt.
I got his IP address, but what do I really care?"

So, JD, is it the same IP each time? Perhaps publishing it could remind the kiddie that there can be consequences...

I was happy for Nemecek and Mike Wallace. Could be an indication of tomorrow's activity. I was ready to strangle Marty Reed for telling for the hundreth time how many leaders we had, how many lead changes there were, etc. Idiot.

Really enjoyable race and a great job by Allen Bestwick and the crew.

I was not able to watch yesterday, but I DVR'd it. It amazes me that BSPN gets away with this coverage by NASCAR. like last years talladega sprint cup finish BSPN had no clue what was going on. Last year they didn't know the rules and it was very evident. This year MR kept saying NASCAR has to tell us who won, but my scoring says Trevor Bayne won... NO S^$% MR...he crossed the line at the white flag as the leader...of course your scoring is going to say that!
someone else said I think that's trevor bayne's radio ... it was clearly kyle busch's crew chief ... WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH BSPN?

seriously can someone answer this for me? at least they showed the winner interview and talked to most of the players. oh by the way ... I love women's softball now!

I had to work Saturday so I could only watch the ARCA race and NNS race on DVR when I got home last night. Watched both back to back (with some Fast Forward in there) starting with ARCA first. Being able to compare a SPEED telecast with ESPN back to back was interesting. For the SPEED coverage I thought the overall camera shots of the field worked for SPEED. Maybe they have less camera angles on the SPEED coverage but they don't do the video game shots and all that. Just good coverage of the field. The pit reporters did a good job too. Speed coverage is simple but effective! I enjoy the SPEED coverage almost every time I tune in to a race. ESPN tries to do to much with the cameras and Marty is lost. Andy did a good job. If ESPN would just bring it back a notch with the camera work and give a full filed shots it would be an improvement. Replacing Marty would help too!
